His lectures are very easy to understand, breaks down bigger concept into smaller details and explains very well. Sometimes I feel he even explains the things that are simple and easy to understand, which don't really need explaining. His midterms are VERY easy if you just go over power point. Overall, would recommend taking!
He is one of the best professor , always so helpful , i wish he will teach bio 112
Explains everything very well, not intimidating at all. Tries to get students involved by answering questions, easy to approach, always there to help, pretty easy quiz's and tests. Excellent prof. Take notes, review the slides and you're golden.
such a great instructor, very respectful and respected by students in return. he makes sure you understand the big picture first before getting into detail. weekly quizzes keep students up to date. fair marker. asks students questions in class which motivated me to always be prepared to answer haha. I hope he teaches bio 112. superb
I had carlos for both the lecture and the lab. his lectures were long and very boring, it was hard to stay focused, but his weekly quizzes made sure you knew what you were supposed to know. For his lab, in general all the labs were easy. The lab midterm was much harder than the lab final however.
Carlos is extremely helpful, he responds to his emails and has good office hours, he gives extra practice questions and sometimes tells you what he might ask on the exam. He does have an accent which for some may be a little hard to understand, but overall he's a great prof! also he marks exams super quick and posts results online.
He is the best professor in the whole entire universe.
i heard hes good for lab, but not lecture... i say avoid him
Hard to understand at times but still a good prof. Mid terms were easy if you follow his notes (which are posted online). His final exam criteria was difficult and the exam was critical thinking situations. Told us certain things that would be on there and weren't. I would still take him again as I would've done better if i tried harder!
I had a lot of difficulties understanding the material for the first half of the semester but it got better in the second half. He is very good at explaining the genetics part of the course.
You have to read the lab procedure before the lab because he often does not take time to explain it. He usually stands on one side of the class and if you happen to be on the other side it takes about ten minutes of putting your hand up to get help. The lab reports only have to be six pages (for three labs). Other labs often ask for twelve pages.
He is an excellent professor. If you are giving your best in quizzes then you will definitely get a good grade.
vey good instructor...
Very confusing, disorganised, and not really helpful in office hours. But would get an A for being a life coach teacher, does share words of wisdom.
Not a great prof, his lectures do not stay on topic and he does not provide clear guidelines as to what will be on his tests/quizzes. He is not the best communicator. Read the textbook since not all the material is covered in lecture. You can still get a good mark with him but it takes some extra work.
Only takes attendance for the first two weeks of class. Basically reads off slides entire class. Very random and inconsistent marking as well as content on exams. Not very helpful outside of class. If you want to teach yourself and not have to go to class go for it but be ready for random exams.
Worst 100 level class I have ever had to take. I am in my third year and have never had to put so much effort into a course before. Carlos is terrible at explaining his lectures, it easier to read the textbook. His quizzes and tests are nothing like he explains them to be. They are very random and off topic from his slides. DONT TAKE HIM.
Worst prof I have ever had. He is not clear on what he wants you to know for midterms/final. He skipped translation and transcription chapters, but still expected us to know them in detail for the final. None of his test questions directly relate to anything you learn in lecture, I studied ALOT, and didn't know how to answer over 1/2 his questions
Carlos is a very nice person he cares very much for his students, he is a very prof but he does quizzes every lab. Just study your quiz and you will do fine on your quizzes however his midterm and finals are very detailed and different from the quizzes. The exams were very tough.
Carlos is a great person and cares about his students trying to explain major components of the course but reading off of powerpoints was not helpful. His tests are difficult with only 30 multiple choice and 4-5 pages of short answers and fill in the blank with questions that aren't from any lectures, all around gives extremely hard tests!
TBH, I don't care if my prof is nice or not. All I care about is my grade in the class. His quizes were straight forward but his midterms were very tough. You have to study everything he goes over in class ESPECIALLY his videos!!!! The final exam was just plain hard! If you want to challenge your self, take this prof. If not, choose another prof!
Had to take a lab science as part of my degree and am so glad I took Carlos's lab and lecture. He was a very caring professor and although he isn't always the best at explaining the subject matter, if you read the textbook in addition to attending the lectures, you should have no problem passing and getting a good grade. He is very knowledgeable.
Carlos is an amazing lab prof for both bio 111 and 112 labs. However, his lectures tend to be extremely scattered and invalid when it comes to studying for midterms and exams. To study for his tests make sure you read the textbook as his lectures are very vague. Would recommend for lab only!!!!!
Carlos is a nice guy but has terrible lectures. Uses slide shows that are over 100 slides and aren't made by him and doesn't seem like he even reads it before class. Skips over many slides and sometimes just says he wont test on some things but test on others. If you take this class you may as well not show up and just read the textbook/slides.
His exams and quizzes are not based on his lectures. Took this in summer and found out I didn't have a passing grade and it was too late to register for fall. He took my love for biology and shredded it, now I'm switching majors because I'm too behind in biology. Administration should fire Carlos, he is not ready to teach uni level courses
Carlos is a nice guy who is willing to help if you need it. That being said, his lectures could stand to improve. However, he provides a very complete set of slides from which his tests are exclusively based on. He also provides midterm/final study guides/practice questions. It was his first time teaching BIO202 so I would expect improvement
Carlos is a nice guy, but his teaching style needs improvement. Lectures are long and dense, as others have said 100+ slides. His tests contain some confusing questions that often refer to unnecessarily specific examples. Lots of study questions are provided, which help a bit but are rather vague. Labs felt like they had been planned last minute.
He takes forever to mark things and give them back. Will deduct points for pointless things even if you got the questions right. Can be difficult to understand sometimes and not the best at explaining what he expects from you to get the best mark. Good luck getting an A
Teaching style is hectic on his best days, he is often hard to understand and tends to be easily distracted by non class related topics. His marking style is inoconsistent and his expectation tend to varry. He is knowledgable in his field but he needs help to prepare his lecteur and learn how to go over topics in a more effective manner.
very nice prof. clear expectations
Carlos is a nice guy, but his teaching style could use some work. He often strays off topic and does not clearly explain the labs. He also does not explain how the labs apply to the material we are learning in lecture, so attending labs feels like a waste of time. He gives quizzes every week, so make sure you read the lab manual before class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS periodt
Carlos is not a prof I would take a lab with again! I took his Bio 111 lab course and was so annoyed by the way he treated his students. He loves yelling, thinking that somehow that will get our attention more and thinks that he is always right. He also likes to call on people randomly and does not respond to emails.
This is was an extremely difficult class to focus in. His powerpoints had 90-100+ slides and he expected you to know everything on them for the exams, even though the questions were completely different. The slides he uses are not his own so his lectures are all over the place. Due to his heavy accent, it was difficult to understand him as well.
He is the most useless prof @ufv and he will mess up any plans you had majoring into Bio. This dude does not know how to teach and if there is anything that I can tell you it is that you should stay away from this prof and don't take his class as it will hurt you and your future.
There are so many things that I would like to say to tell you to stay the f away from this incompetent quack but to summarize everything, STAY AWAY FROM HIM IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT A CAREER IN BIO. This dude will screw you up and worse he will act as if he did nothing wrong. UFV NEEDS TO FIRE THIS LOSER ASAP
I use to like bio. Not anymore. I could have cured cancer, but because of this idiot, we will never know. Gonna solidified my major in Chemistry now.
If you are reading this, please stop teaching. You're not helping anyone. I thought the comments were kinda mean in the beginning but after attending your class, I completely understand what they were trying to warn me of. Don't take his class even if you have too. Wait for another prof and you'll be fine. SO just as a summary, DO NOT TAKE HIM !!!
I guess they let anyone become a prof these days. I would highly suggest that you just stop what your doing and drop his class ASAP.
I find it ironic how he talks about trans fats and unhealthy food and at the same time, will also go to triple O's and eat a burger with a large chocolate shake. Pretty bad teaching style.
He clearly doesn't know how to teach and he should really just stick to research. Generally, I'm a pretty chill person but all the reviews people have made about him are 100% ACCURATE. He should admit that he doesn't know how to teach and move on with a new career. He needs to understand that this class is a prereq for future careers.
Maybe one of the worst profs I have ever had. I already have my degree in Physics and this man's teaching style is the worst of them yet. I would not take his class. I've looked through the rest of the ratings and I can say that they are all correct. I would avoid this person as he doesn't know how to mark and can possibly ruin your GPA.
should not be a prof, came to every lecture and still did not know anything along with the rest of the class which has a 50% avg. Had to do majority of work myself
I had a Bio 111 Lab with Carlos, and it was an absolute nightmare! Carlos always rushed us to finish our experiments as quickly as possible, and he was still irritated when students would ask questions when need if clarification. I felt incredibly discouraged after completing this course. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
I really didn't like Carlos as a professor. As a guy, he is really nice and kind but as a professor he kinda sucks. He does not give clear outlines of what he wants you to know, long answer questions come out of left field, when he marks something wrong good luck getting partial marks even if you deserve them. Confusing lectures.
I had already done a degree and needed a few additional science courses. Carlos is a good professor, but that's only if you put the work in and go to class. A lot of these comments don't make sense to me b/c he was a pretty standard professor. Honestly, uni isn't about freebies and you certainly won't get one from Carlos. Do the assignments&study!
Idk how he achieved being a prof, this guy is so lazy with his teaching and unorganized. Loved bio prior and now hate it. Horrible experience. Final exam in less than 2 weeks and hasn't even posted the 4 last chapter lectures for the remainder of the semester. Hasn't marked quizzes from a month ago and idk if we'll get 2nd midterm mark b4 final.
I didn't get the impression that Carlos doesn't care about his students but out of language differences, may come off rude. However, I think this online semester left him overwhelmed becuase he seemed to be falling asleep while "teaching". I have learned nothing this semester and am terrified for the final. Tests are completely different than class
I think Carlos makes BIO 111 a terrible experience, and it seems I am not alone with that. All of my classmates have told me the same thing: very dry and uninteresting, very hard to understand, and gives us very little resources or explanations for anything. I cannot imagine how much worse his BIO 111 lecture class would be.
Dont take him unless there is no other option. Lectures are 130+ slides w/ no pics and he just reads them off. Calls on students & when u answer his question he will pick ur answer apart, whether or not it was correct. Test Qs are all analytical & looks for specific details. He is not organized in lab & barely gives feedback. Not a good experience.
If you like application based questions this is the prof for you. His exams cover a lot of his case studies and wants you to create experiments in about 6 minutes online. Not very lenient with marks, and when you ask him for help he talks over you about a different topic, regretted taking him this semester. He will ruin your GPA!
At first he can seem tough, but he is a genuinely caring professor for each and every student. He is always available by e-mail/ Zoom and really makes students work hard for their grades. Perfect preparation for upper level bio classes. He heavily emphasizes long answer questions so skip memorization and truly understand the concepts.
I wouldnt take his class again. One of my friends had a makeup exam and he didnt even show. What a joke. The only things that count for marks are quizzes and exams. No curve and marks hard.
Lectures are long and boring. A lot of exam questions were not even taught. He just reads off the powerpoints and doesn't explain any concepts. Only things that are for marks is quizzes, mid terms and final. Would never take this guy again, didn't learn nothing.
I wish I listened to these reviews and not taken Carlos. He seems to not care about teaching, since he misses classes to become a minister and go on field trips. His tests have unexpected stuff and his lectures are boring. He is hard to understand. He left an hour early during the final exam to go to a christmas party. His syllabus is also outdated
I did AP Bio in high school but if I had not I probably would have done much worse in this class. Lectures were long and uninteresting, and while Carlos clearly understands what he is talking about, he is not very engaging at all. Test questions are often poorly written. Gave zero homework the whole course which was nice.
Doubted the reviews but they're spot on. Can't teach doesn't care & unprofessional. Half awake during class (literally sleeping). Told us he has to leave early for the final because of his retreat at Harrison. Came an hour late to the final. Fought with student services VP bc he came in right when she said we can leave. How is he still a professor.
Carlos has a strong thick accent. He frequently does not use slides, and will teach simply by speaking and drawing 5-6 words on the bored during the whole lecture. I have had to re teach myself everything. When he does (rarely) use notes, he flips through them extremely fast. Midterms and quizzes will have some surprises. he frequently cancle class
for a quiz i got a mark of 5/10, but my quiz only had 6 questions on it. i emailed him about this, he said it was a mistake and i could have a requiz. when i went to re quiz he said it would be 10 questions exactly like the orignal, and he told me to get a blank paper and write down what i learnt about the case study as my requiz.
Terrible prof, the class has been so unorganized. Cancels classes and schedules time outside of the assigned class times, which are hard to go to due to a busy schedule.
Very inconsistent and not on top of things for organizing classes, lectures, and tests. Lectures are pretty long, boring, and note heavy, he will fly by important slides but go into detail about the useless stuff. The quizzes and tests are very different from what we went over in class. I would not recommend this professor, although he seems nice.
His lectures are good and he does a great job of explaining the material. He provides slides that have the most important parts of each chapter, so you don't need to buy the textbook. After each midterm he hands back your test so you can see what answers you got wrong. He had 3 review sessions before the final which were helpful.
Just awful. For the final there was over 1000 slides of pure text. I learned everything on those slides inside and out. The final had nothing to do with 95% of the slides, let alone the course in general. 75%+ of the questions on the final were "Design an experiment to do/find out this...". Glad I had a good understanding of mol bio techniques.
I am typically an A+ student and very rarely struggle in any courses. Carlos' class has been the hardest course I've ever taken out of my entire degree, and it will likely cost me the ability to graduate next semester. No chance to improve marks with weekly assignments, only midterms and quizzes. He's a nice guy but zero connection with students.
After reading some reviews, I was nervous to take Carlos. However, the reviews were far from the truth. Carlos is a very caring prof, and gives us the option of doing extra assignments in case you do bad on the quizzes. 202 is definitely lecture heavy, however, if you study hard and attend lectures, you will do good!
Many of the reviews for Carlos are somewhat misleading. The course is very difficult, which sometimes gives the impression that Carlos is a bad prof, which is not true. No matter who your prof is for BIO 111, you will have to study quite a bit for the biochemistry part of the class. Show up to class because sometimes you can get bonus credit.
This professor is the worst I've encountered. Classes are chaotic and incoherent, assignments lack clarity, and grading feels random. Questions are ignored or met with sarcasm. Feedback is rare or hostile. They barely respond to emails, and office hours are useless as they rush students out. A complete waste of time and tuition. Avoid if possible
This professor's conduct was highly inappropriate, with multiple instances of unwanted physical contact during class that made me and others very uncomfortable. His dismissive attitude toward questions and lack of clear guidance only added to the tension. Communication was poor, and overall, this experience was distressing and unprofessional.
Not sure about the bad reviews but carlos is a good prof. His lecture slides are detailed and great for learning and memorizing info. I think people who complain about him may just not be studying? If you show up to most lectures and READ the slides you will be ok.
A lot of people didn't like him but i actually liked him as a professor. He was pretty chill! I enjoyed his class and learnt a lot. I do think it was challenging for him because we switched profs during the semester but he still did good regardless! His rates are way too harsh, he's your average prof, just study the slides and u will do good.
The negative reviews are unwarranted. Carlos may be disorganized, but he is a very caring and very intelligent professor who is willing to help. His teaching methods promote self discovery and self learning - which is how it actually happens. He is not a prof who will hold you hand throughout the semester.
He definitely wrote the last two posts. He needs to retire.
I had a great time in Carlos' class! The only issue I could see anyone having with him is not understanding his accent, as he is from Peru, but I've always considered myself bad with accents and I could understand him just fine. He has no homework or assignments, just quizzes and tests. I feel like any issues he had have gone away with time.

I feel like any issues he'd had have gone away with time. He doesn't give out any homework or assignments, only grades on quizzes and tests.
The last two people who rated these are the two white girls that went to "office hours" to raise there grade and something else. Im telling you, don't take this man if you want a good gpa and a career in Biology. man will take this away from you.
CARLOS A GOAT.
Lectures in 111 are pretty dry, but content is easy to understand and learn if you read the textbook chapters. Carlos calls on random students in class often for answers so can be a little daunting if you don't know the answer. If you've taken high school Biology you'll be fine, if not the textbook is your friend I just showed up for participation.
Worst teacher on campus, when hes not late hes bragging about how its two days until the final exam and he HASNT WRITTEN IT YET SOO HE CANT HELP YOU STUDY LOL.
He does have an accent which can make some of the lecture difficult to understand, but it is clear he is trying his best with it. He marks very harshly and all of the quizes/tests have questions worded unlike anything you've seen in lecture before so be ready for that. The lectures consist of him reading off of a powerpoint so can be boring.
Always late, rushing in out of breath with zero respect for students' time. Unprofessional, with weird touching and random religious talk that has nothing to do with class. Tests aren't made until the day before, so studying is impossible. Disorganized, careless, and clearly doesn't care about students' success. Avoid at all costs.
Always late and out of breath, showing no respect for students. Constantly brings up religion, turning lectures into awkward, irrelevant rants instead of teaching. Makes students uncomfortable with unnecessary touching. Tests are made the day before, so no study help. Completely unprofessional, disorganized, and not worth taking.
