The map quizzes were easy. The essay were marked very hard. Nice man but intimadating at times.
Seemed like a nice enough guy. Map quizzes are super easy. Exam wasn't too bad. His english is a little off at times (he's Brasilian so its expected), but he does seem to have a sense of humor.
The guy is all over the place, there isnt alot of work in the class and if you write what he want to read you will do. But be ready for some shaddy things from this guy
He is a nice guy and the class is interesting. Yeah, he's pretty hot too and that doesn't hurt.

Great professor. I really enjoyed his class. Very fair prof!!
This was the WORST professor I have ever had. He spent no time preparing for class. PowerPoint presentations were verbatim from the reading, and rife with errors. Rude to students who question what is being taught. Poor teaching style. Half of every class was spent with student presentations directly read from text. BORING and a waste of my time.
Great teacher. Coming from Latin america, he gives a personal perspective on topics. He knows his stuff..annnnd he is hot!
Great Professor. He offered great help to overcome fear of presentation. Easy-going style is a good break from others professor. This is the second course I took with him, and I hoping to take more classes with him.
Really cool prof, he's a right on guy. I took Political Analysis and every class was straight out of the textbook so it was pretty boring. He was pretty helpful with papers giving information to those who requested it. I would not recommend Political Analysis but I would recommend the prof.

Great Prof. There were a very few who did not like him, but mainly because they got low mark or just because he was not from here. He has more going on in his head than you'll ever be able to appreciate. Work hard, think before you speak, and you'll be rewarded. The most important thing I learned in his class was ‘take a stand’.
Great prof. The accent can be a problem to some(as they told)...but i like it.
Great prof. The accent is killing the students, but his hotness is enough to go to each class...I took his International Relations class and also Political Analysis class.
good prof...and one of the few to be easy on the eyes :)
Carlos Pessoa is a very prof! He's very easy to talk to and encourages students to ask for help. He is approachable, flexible and asks for feedback. The lectures are usually interesting and the notes are pretty straight forward. I would take another course with him for the simple fact that I like the guy! Cute too!
I loved Dr. Pessoa's class. his accent is difficult to understand for maybe the first 5 min. of the 1st class, after that it is extremely easy to understand him. His lessons provide valuable insight into the topic. He also uses one class each week as a public discussion of the topic allowing members of the class to argue their own opinions.
His class can be a bit confusing at times. He uses a lot of the same material for all his classes. His accent isn't so bad. There are presentations. Other than that everything is good! He's flexible with tests when the class prefers multiple choice or short answer. You don't necessarily need to buy the book if you attend every class.
Don't be swayed by the green face beside his name. Prof Pessoa is my favorite prof at SMU. I wish he could teach all my classes. His notes are a little unclear but if you ask him to explain he does. He encourages you to ask for help and is the most approachable Prof I have had so far. He assigns a class rep. to provide notes if you missed class.
Great knowledge of International Politics.
Prof. Pessoa is ignorant and does not care at all about the students. He should have someone read over his exams before administering them as he clearly has difficulty with english.
Interesting class - makes use of current events worldwide. Great at encouraging discussion and starting class debates - very entertaining. Marks essays very easy. However, his multiple test exams are designed for failure - all "none of the above", "all of the above", and trick questions.
Great prof! out of 70 students or so, only 2 or 3 didn?t like him. Dont try to be a smart ass and you will be just fine. Easy on the eyes! :)
Professor Pessoa is friendly, attentive, and best of all understanding. I enjoyed his class and felt more challenged. He tends to differ from the traditional "memorization" and instead challenges students as individuals. Plus, a really easy going guy to chat chat with.
This professor is unable to clearly define what he wants, his accent is difficult, he's a nice enough guy but that's not enough to be a good professor. Based on his lack of clarity, his marking is way harder than is deserved. I warn you, don't go past a 2000 level with this professor.
He doesn't know what he wants. He's a nice guy, but continually changed his mind about things. He's hard to understand. The worst thing was he told us what would be on the final for essays, and none of them were at all. I knew a bit the stuff that wasn't suppose to be on it, but he marked half of it wrong. Half the class went from an A+ to A-.
Great prof. His easy-going approach, makes it easy to talk to and ask for help.
The guy has some serious ego issues
He knows the subject matter quite well, and he is very nice, casual and easy to talk to, but his ability to speak English isn't the best. It's not horrible, but it often causes problems. His class was often hard to sit through, and what he said on the exam was completely different than what was actually on it. His marking seems inconsistent, too.
He was a fantastic professor. Very passionate about his topics and if you showed interest in the classes, he showed interest in you. I had him for several courses. HIs classes influenced my thesis topic as well. One of the best profs I've had out of 2 different Universities. Two thumbs up!
Smart prof, understanding of individual students. All exams are multiple choice, but beware of "none of the above".
easy going prof, but you need to work for your grade...your eyes will thank you :)
Great prof, cares about students and creates great in class debates... great for anyone with an in poli sci
Really didn't enjoy the class due to trouble understanding him because of his English. Also, the heavy reliance on power points really make the class hard to pay attention in. A nice guy, but ahrd to follow a lot of the time.
Best prof you will ever have. warning he has an accent but if you don't space out you'll understand fine! He is so interesting.. knows his stuff. he talks about stuff that happening right now in the world and relates it to what we're doing! not to mention lots of interesting discussions and debates! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are not lazy.
easy going prof...accent is hot!
This is not a bird class! If you come to class prepared and you still need extra help Pessoa is happy to give it to you. If you show up without having done the reading he will question you up on it. He does have an accent but its not hard to understand him. If you put effort into the class he will put even more effort into helping you do well.
I had Carlos for a summer course this year . I really thought he was a great professor. If you come to class, do the readings, and participate, you'll most likely end up with a good mark. I ended up receiving an A+, so I can't complain.
Pretty fun class, this guy is hilarious. He's got an accent, but trust me, you won't be dissapointed with your mark, he's pretty fair. :)
Good prof! You can adjust to his accent. If you don't understand something, ask him and he won't bite your head off. He actually has a brief, hilarious Powerpoint on what to do if you see him at a bar. Easygoing, willing to help, and it isn't hard to get an A with the bonus marks he offers. I learned a lot and became a humble privileged westerner.
the best pro i ever had in smu, easy going and ready to help his students , he knows what he is doing, very smart pro, i wish every prof was like him!! trust me he is the best prof i can think of. he does not give grades that u did not work for, you have to follow his teaching and readings for you to get the best grade he is very helpful
Nice guy but he really gives no indication of what his expectations are. For a presentation worth 30% we basically had no guidelines or reference for what was expected. I've also heard his marking referred to as "schizophrenic" which I wouldn't disagree with. Nice prof and easy to talk to but I did not learn a lot from this course.
hard to understand (not just accent, but mumbles) and his slides are often hard to comprehend due to no proof reading. Very sporadic with marking, hard to know what he wants. takes random attendance checks, and gets marks mixed up often. avoid the stress, do not take him.
Don't get the criticism on his accent, to me he spoke fluent English. What confused me more than anything were his guidelines (or lack thereof). Very friendly, approachable, and has a sense of humor however speaking with him still didn't do much to clarify things. Powerpoints and presentations also made for some pretty stale classes.
nice friendly prof, who helps whenever you need it. Unless you are some kind of neurotic, you should be fine.
easy-going prof...i was happy with my grade....will take another course for sure
Hes a good professor, he has a hispanic accent and without a doubt would beat any other prof I had in a fight.
Nice and easy going prof....I wish all prof were that warm and approachable. If you have any problem, you can easyly talk to him.
Really easy prof just memorize the slides and it's an easy A for POLI 1220. Easy prof and interesting class. Also do the documentary report as soon as possible. Didn't even buy any of the books for this course.
I don't often dislike profs, but I really didn't like Pessoa. He can be rude, dictatorial, and over bearing. Yes he does have a very strong accent, but regardless of that he does repeat things if necessary. There is no eating in class, no leaving class cept during a break, and he decides when and when we can't use our laptops.
While this class was really easy, He's an extremely hard Prof to follow. In my 2nd course with him, and its getting far worse. rescheduling due dates so they conflict with other assignments in the class, not giving an outline for anything, videos for essays are watched last minute, no time given to properly prepare work. A real let down.
He is a really nice guy and really care of his students especially an international students!
The class was relatively easy…now that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want in class. He is restrict on the use of cell phone…fair enough, what are you doing there anyways?...lol…warm and friendly, I was happy with the prof. Over the summer was the easiest class ever…he allows you to write papers to replace exam….that was great for me.
Carlos is a great prof. He took our class to different places for social events. It was fun and even though his accent sometimes can be a bit confused, I still recommend him! He is funny:)
Tough to follow with the lectures, but he is passionate about his classes, he has high expectations but it is overall easy to pass if you actually show up and do the work, small papers and simple tests, group projects too.
Listens to students; gives extra credit; his power points are not long at all, very easy to follow and are essential to passing tests. I like that he gives an option of doing an essay or a test. What I did not like however was one assignment in particular which was a video response paper. Great course overall though!
Carlos is the best prof at Smu. I have learnt so much from him. He really makes you feel like your learning from a friend not a higher up authority. A great guy and I really reccommend taking his class. When Carlos asks for something follow the rubic strictly and you will be fine. He's there to help if you put forth the effort and want to learn.
Man is a great prof. I took a first year political science course on globalization with him and you never needed to go to class. The marks grading consisted of two essays worth 30% each and two writing assignments about videos watched in class both worth 20%. Great prof with a great sense of humor.
The only reason this class is okay is because the weight is so spread out. It's 10% attendance, 20% midterm 30% paper and like 40% final or something like that. Otherwise Pessoa kinda sucks. He tests only on his slides... but if you miss one thing he takes of a disproportionate amount of your grade. Don't even bother appealing, he is so hard headed
Carlos is a good guy, his English is a bit rough but great prof would use again!
I would most definitely take Carlos again, he's funny and the content is understandable. There was no exams/tests or assignments for this course, but instead 4 essays (2 short and 2 long), which was actually not bad since he marks more than fairly (which is rare for professors).
Lot's of papers to hand in but he makes it very clear what he wants. Very strict marking scheme but tells you from the get-go and doesn't change it. If you email him he will answer very fast. Very helpful and knows what he's talking about. He used films in class, which we had to write papers on, uploaded a link for those who missed it.
Took a spring class with him as my prof. Missed a class for a funeral, so read the outline of an assignment on Brightspace. The instructions on Brightspace weren't what he told in class so I failed it. If your answers aren't word-for-word from the lecture, you will not pass a test. By far the toughest prof I've had in terms of grading.
Carlos will give you a good mark if you study according to his requirement
You will get more than A just remember the knowledge from the power point but the presentation is group form
Marking is very fair, all material on tests were given in the powerpoint presentation. Lectures were short and concise. Paper rubrics were handed out and updated accordingly. Responds to emails with good timing, usually on the day. Cares about your progress, is understanding, helpful and gives good guidelines for assignments.
Literally the worst prof I've ever had. He is probably the reason why I switched from SMU to MSVU. Make sure you attend class. If your test answers aren't in his *exact* words, forget passing it. Did I mention ATTEND CLASS? He's the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrst.
He is the WORST teacher ever!!!! I took an online course with him during COVD-19 and he's very disrespectful. I had a family emergency and I submitted my assignment 3 hours late and he was the rudest person, didn't even give me the chance to explain myself. The course is not hard but he needs to learn how to talk to people!
Professor Pessoa is one of the worst profs ive had at SMU. He is very disrespectful to his students, and if your text answers are not word for word what his notes say, than you will not pass. He basically wants you to copy and paste his answers. He acts like he doesnt care about his students and its obvious he doesnt care about their marks.
Pessoa never explains his marking scheme. By semester's end, I'd figured out that he wants notes regurgitated on exams; follow everything to the letter and you'll do well. His English is offensively poor, to the point where I was unsure if he could understand words outside of his notes. The lectures and textbook were unnecessaryjust use his notes.
Prof made the course interesting and focused on really learning the topics in detail. He is very clear in his instructions. 2 video review papers (read instructions carefully) plus exam on a few short answer questions to show what you understand about topics. No weekly assignments so it is up to you to study the info provided for each week.
Super easy class. If you want a easy A+ take one of his classes.
Dr. Pessoa was a nice guy and is clearly well informed on the subject he is teaching, and is passionate about it. He cracked jokes sometimes to lighten the mood. That being said, his lectures were incredibly dry. The course was easy though, two papers based on class notes (which he posted) a midterm and a final.
I loved this guy. Super nice dude, full of jokes and nice to talk to. He marked fairly and is an easy A if you do the work. Don't worry about paying for a textbook for this class, I didn't buy it and I got an A+
Really nice guy, and a good prof. He's very understanding. His lectures can be a bit dry sometimes, but he's very straightforward in what he expects. 2 papers, 2 exams. Papers are a breeze, exams are pretty easy too.
Very chill, interesting lectures. Workloads were easy in this and IDST 2301 (online asynchronous).
He is a very relaxed professor, is willing to answer any questions, although lectures were dull and didn't keep my attention but he was funny which made up for it. 2 tests both online and very easy, 1 paper worth 40% but have all semester to work on it.
A clear grading criteria. Easy course. The exams are all from the notes provided by the professor, so if you read the notes you will ace the 2 exams.
Lectures are actually interesting. You can get through this course without studying at all. He gives 2 m/c tests both online. The tests are based on his powerpoints which btw are easy to read and understand. He creates the m/c himself so the answers are direct quotes from the powerpoints. The final is a research paper you send in. Easy grader.
Dr. Pessoa was probably the kindest prof I've had. So welcoming and extremely accesible outside of class at any time. Exams very straightforward, papers even more so. Lecture notes 100% crucial. I took it as a spring course so only 2 exams and 1 paper, nothing else graded. Great choice for elective, good even though I do not like political science.
Professor Carlos was so understanding and straightforward when I took his class in the spring semester. It was online so that you could do things at your own pace. Quizzes and exams are easy if you read the material. He is very strict about only using what he teaches you to answer questions. Reach out to him if you're unsatisfied with a grade.
He is the most horrible grader I have ever met.
This is a good course if your looking for a low-maintenance elective. There are 2 papers that are based on videos, and 2 exams. Just listen to his lectures, read the power points and make sure NOT to use outside sources when writing the papers/exams and you'll do fine.
