Great Proffesor!! I advice everyone who has yet to take Operating Systems take him!!
Great Professor! He is a very nice and caring professor for Operating system course. His lectures are very helpful and he is always ready to help students. His quizzes are fair enough, you just need to know the powerpoints slides and will get easy A in quizzes. TAKE HIM FOR OPERATING SYSTEM.
The professor is passionate and has a lot of knowledge about the world of computer science. He is upbeat in his lectures and expands on his lectures. His doors are always open on office hours and he has a good habit of checking his email. I plan on taking him again next semester.
I was very fortunate to have professor Rincon my first semester of college. He is very compassionate when it comes to making sure his students are learning the material properly. Being a non CS major, the class was pretty difficult but his doors are literally always open. So don't be scared to ask for help!
I love this professor. He's absolutely amazing and makes comp sci so interesting for his students!!!
He's very passionate and always eager to answer any question. Super friendly professor; his office doors are always open. COSC 1306 is a ridiculously easy class if you have any CS experience whatsoever. I recommend skipping this class if you have the AP credit and want to feel like you're actually getting value out of your time and money.
Excellent professor. Accessible to students outside of class, has generally interesting lectures and expects participation during lectures. I highly recommend taking him for any course he teaches, but especially OS. Assignments are sometimes challenging, but never unreasonable or overwhelming, and he gives plenty of time to do them.
Professor Carlos a good teacher but his Assginment's are extremely hard, no curve even if you are a point to A.
His tests are tough, as well as the assignments. However; he genuinely cares about you and if you reach out to him he will help you. Prepare for the exams very well and make the best cheat sheet you can, they will save you during the tests. You can have 1-sided cheat sheet per test and 2-sided on final. Assignments are interesting but start early.
In my view this class is the most hardest 3000 level class after 3340. He has 3 tests online on blackboard in class and 3 hard projects that took around 10-15 hours each. Half of the class dropped after looking at his 2nd projects with a W. His exams have both multiple choice and free response online. Projects are the hardest. The professor is okay
Great professor. Homework is semi-difficult, tests were more difficult but he allows a cheat sheet. Very clear grading criteria and content for tests/HW. He is also very helpful if you ask him questions.
Outstanding professor all around. Start your assignments as they are assigned and practice what he emphasizes for exams. Lectures were entertaining and easy to follow.
Good prof. Start early on assignments, grading criteria is clear and explained. Course wasnt bad for me but quite a few people struggled.
He's very easy going and understanding. Don't be afraid to ask questions. He'll try his best to guide you.
He is a good teacher just make sure you come in with some basic knowledge of coding. This is an intro class, but he does expect you to know some things. He gives plenty of time to do assignments. I took AP Computer Science in HS and this class was basically a refresher for it. You don't have to go to class as long as you know what you're doing.
CAR made my freshman year so much better! He's very understanding of situations, and he is very accessible outside of class. You do not need prior knowledge of coding because his lectures are at a good pace. If you have questions, make sure to answer because he will explain until you get it. Rincon is a GODSEND!
This class was difficult. It has been by far the hardest class I've taken at UH. However, professor Rincon makes up for it by being extremely helpful. If you don't understand something in class, I would definitely suggest going to his office hours. He will help you and explain it to you. Assignments are time consuming. Exams are okay.
Professor Rincon is amazing. His lectures were clear and very straightforward. He really wants his students to know how to use the program but also understand what he is teaching. I had no prior coding experience and he made this class work with us. He is very approachable during his office hours and is always ready to help you with your code
Rincon is a great professor. He would go above and beyond to help during class and office hours. As for the class, some students might struggle if they do not enjoy the process of solving programming problems.
Great professor, take him for any CS class in UH. His lectures are good and he's always willing to help anyone with questions. Class is an easy A but there's quite a bit of homework.
I think this class is just hard in general coming out of 1306. People will rave about his teaching style but honestly it's nothing special, and it's hard to understand him sometimes because he speaks fast and has an accent. Homeworks take a long time, we used Zybooks when I took it and the grading was very scuffed. No extra credit and no curves
Professor Rincon is a very good teacher and knows what he is doing. However, his lectures can be boring sometimes. The assignments are manageable but his tests are complete curveballs. He is also a very hard grader. To do well in his course you have to continuously study and hope the tests are not too bad.
His class in person might've been much better. However, this class as an online course was a generally unpleasant experience. Rincon teaches well, but his tests can make or break a grade. There is no curve or extra credit. If you want to earn a good grade, do study well for the Exams and submit the homework assignments on time.
Rincon is a professor that is really good if you have a decent amount of experience before hand, however even the ones who have been doing c++ for a while had a hard time. The classes pace is extremely fast. We finished 9 chapters of a 13 chapter book before test 1. Rincons teaching style is fine, however I feel like he would be better in person.
Took Rincon for OS in Fall 2020. He is one of the best professors I've had at UH! He loves his students and he wants you to succeed! He gives a great curve as long as you put some effort and show that you try.
Took him in fall 2020 and his class was by far the worst I have ever taken. There were so many students who struggled, and barely passed this course. It was so bad, that they eased up the curriculum for the next semester. There were only about 2 or 3 students who passed his class with A's.
By far a very easy class. I literally ended with a 99 average because I got a 95 on the final instead of a 100. The first half of this class was the professor holding your hand while teaching you then it got "difficult" according to the other students but it felt the same. Just take notes and pass. I literally had no CS experience but easily passed
Prof is nice and will help you if you have questions. There are in-class activities, programming assignments, and 3 exams. I struggled on these assignments but gets better toward the end of the semester. I had no prior coding experience but still manage to pass the 3 exams. Lectures are not helpful for beginners. I had to study on my own.
Great professor. Probably one of the hardest CS courses at UH, however the professor really cares about the students, even offered a deadline extension and extra credit after strictly saying none will be provided in the course.
I didn't like Rincon's 1430 but taking him for 3360 is definitely the move. He knows what he is talking about and HWs are hard but 100% doable and all the assignments/tests help you understand the course material. He is very understanding and is always willing to help students during office hours and repeat things in lectures.
I took his month long course in the summer and would not recommend it unless you are already a pro in C++. He goes through materials very fast and expects you to already be knowledgeable on the subject.
This was a computer science introductory class, and despite that, it seemed that students who had experience regarding coding and programming prior to this class were able to pass. This class is a total fail for those of us who have little to no experience in coding.
I just finished his summer 2021 course for COSC 1430 with an A. Due to the nature of summer course this was completely harder than 1306. By the end of two weeks we covered 9 chapters and had an exam (to be fair 4 Ch were review from 1306 but in C++). However the rest of the 2 weeks of class was just 4 Ch. Paid online Textbook was mandatory for labs
My favorite professor at UH so far. What he lacks in social niceties he makes up for in the clarity of his lectures and expectations. Very well organized and it reflects in his courses. Highly recommend this guy, he's one of the good ones!
Professor Rincon is a very passionate, and caring teacher. He listens to students' questions and answer everyone. However, his lecture is not very intuitive as I am very new to C++ and object-oriented programming so this course was hard for me. He teaches as if students already have some knowledge about the subject. He is okay overall.
One of the only professors at this university with good lectures. He cares about conveying the necessary information to you and doesn't waste your time. Uses efficient, direct language. Plenty of example code and practice tests to help you. Accommodating of broke students without laptops. But you should learn a bit of C++ before taking the course.
While I didn't do too well in this class it's because I had no prior experience with C++ or object oriented programming. However I definitely learned a lot in this course. It's difficult if you're new to it but if you attend office hours and seek help when needed it's definitely helpful. He wants you to pass and is ready to give you the opportunity
I worked a lot harder than I thought I would need to for this class but I love that Dr. Rincon seemed to care about helping his students pass and was fair with grading. Definitely study a lot through zybooks and programming assignments were increasingly difficult. There were chances for extra credit for exams.
The assignments and criteria were clear from the beginning. Provided partial credit on exams and homeworks, and gave two extra credit opportunities. Was easy to get lost in some of the lectures and some of the homework assignments were pretty difficult, but overall this class is pretty manageable, especially if you have prior coding experience.
I'm working on my second degree, and this guy was one of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures are great and to the point. He's always accessible if you have questions, the concepts he teaches in lecture, and the assignments he gives, are just like what you need to know for the tests. Great Professor all around, you won't regret taking him.
Awesome professor. If you have the chance to take this guy, do. He knows the material and does a greater job of teaching it. One of my favorites. Wish UH had more like him.
This course was impossible to fail. The programming questions on the exams were difficult though and I was never prepared enough. Lots of extra credit. Didn't understand lectures very well but that is because it was new to me. He is very kind and is focused on improving his teaching methods and loves feedback from students which is so humble.
My genuine advice: This class is difficult if you have no experience in coding.1st exam was easy, but 2nd and final exam was really hard. I was suppose to pass with a B, but I collaborated with several students on one of the coding assignments and received a 0. Apparently this isnt allowed? We had similar codes, so he gave us a 0. A shame honestly.
This is my second time taking the class with this professor. I don't find him or his TAs helpful answering my homework questions. The professor also can come off passive aggressive (i.e. you should've known this by now). I'm already putting in the time like everyone else. I don't appreciate being put down this way.
Rincon is a knowledgeable and talented professor who makes his expectations for his students clear from the beginning. His homework assignments, although not trivial, build on each other in a way that I've not seen any other professor do. He makes himself available to students and his exams, while difficult, are exceedingly fair. Background helpful
His lectures are okay but honestly, they are useless, they tend to get boring and repetitive he talks as if you already knew the material, the only reason students go to class is to take his quizzes which are not that difficult but they are all or nothing questions and that's also a drawback, there is NO curve in this course.
The course started off with VERY basic C++ and he always asks if anybody has any questions and he's ready to answer any and all questions before moving on. So if you consider him being helpful as "boring and repetitive" then that's on you. Quizzes are not difficult, if your code doesn't work in a job environment you're not gonna get pity points.
Professor Rincon is honestly just great. This is the 2nd time I've had him (1336) and I can definitely say he's consistent. From the start, he explained all his grading criteria & expectations. He doesn't curve, but for this class, you really don't need it. Rincon is a very thorough lecturer & likes questions in class. Always accessible & timely.
Dr. Rincon really cares about his students. People dropped because 1)want ez A or 2)not even try. I'm not a good coder but I actively reach out to him and his TAs to ask for help. This class itself is challenging already, and if you seriously study, you'll gain A LOT. He is dedicated and will help you. Don't wait til last minute.
Plenty of extra credits and you can bring a cheat sheet to the test!
You can tell he genuinely cares about teaching compared to the other professors in the department who just see it as a chore and focus on research instead. The class was really hard and the subject is boring but he made it worth it. He makes you work hard for the A but he's probably one of the best professors in the department.
Glad I took OS with him!! he had office hours available 4 days every week. Homework assignments werent overly difficult and I still learned from them. He gives easy extra credit opportunities. I bombed very badly on exam 1 but with his help, I was able to recover and end with a B+. He also records his lectures and lets you join class from online.
Very understanding of the workload that cs students have. He allows one page of cheat sheet on the exams, provides plenty of individual help, and is always available to answer questions. Would highly recommend; one of the best professors for UH CS.
No curves, no extra credit assignments other than a chance to get 10 extra points on the exam for getting a question right. Programming assignments get easier. Very strict grading criteria. Exams 1 and 2 were brutal due to a heavily weighted programming question. Final saved me! One of the most challenging computer science professors... goodluck!
The best profesor ever. He is caring and very nice. The lectures are interesting and the homework you learn a lot. He is the best.
Prof Rincon changed my life forever I've dealt with depression and anxiety most of my life. I've tried to beat my anger and frustrations with false happiness but nothing worked :c but prof Rincon class taught me how to love and accept myself and strive to become a better version of myself everyday Thank you for your service prof Rincon, I salute u
Professor Rincon lectures very well if a bit fast. The assignments do involve some study but have generous deadlines. The exams are fairly difficult, and there is no curve and deadline extensions are rare. You need to know C/C++ well. While this class is not easy, I'd say Prof. Rincon is one of UH's best CS professors, and strongly recommend him.
Professor Rincon is effective in delivering this class. His mode of instruction is enthusiastic and speedy, so don't fall behind, and remember to ask questions about anything you don't understand. Start your homework early, and go to his office hours to get it checked. His tests are easy if you go over the slides & look at the practice exam PQs.
Gigachad Extra credit for the exams! Homeworks are tough so don't procrastinate. Caring and gives a form of a curve through the extra credit Brush up on your C++ and pointers!
Why, WHY would you make your homeworks based off of one another? Basically, if you do terrible on the first homework, you might as well drop because it only gets harder from here. The homeworks are though and it weighs at least 1/3 of the overall grade. I tried to get help from TAs, but no one would answer.
Dr. Rincon is my favorite CS professor. The material can be difficult, but he is always willing to answer questions. He never made me feel stupid about my questions. Stay engaged during lectures and ask questions and you'll do well on the exams. He also answers questions about the HWs and basically tells you what will be on the exam.
I do not see why there are so many bad ratings for this professor as he is one of the best I have had at UH so far. He is so helpful and helped me easily learn the material. He is very quick to respond and is very caring about his students.
He's a very nice person overall. If you have any questions and you go to office hours he will gladly assist you. The exams are very straightforward it's easy to get an A since you will know ahead of time what the programming questions will be like. Homeworks are easy since you have unlimited submissions and can check if you got a 100 on them or not
Professor Rincon is one of a kind. You would not find another person as caring as this man. I was dealing with depression and anxiety and was going through mental trauma at the time of the class. Professor Rincon held my hand and guided me throughout the class and made me feel safe and belonging. He is truly inspirational. I salute you.
Extra credit for every test. Plenty of time for each homework (1 month). Helpful office hours. Only tip is don't procrastinate on homework and stress yourself out on small errors.
I had a rough start at the beginning of the semester failing tests horribly. As the course went on however, I was able to pick myself and my grade back up to passing. He encourages asking for help every step of the way. Even on Exams!. The prof is very reachable and understanding; he usually takes 1 hour max to respond based on my own experience.
Rincon is an amazing professor and is a must take for OS. His class is graded on 3 hws and 3 exams. The hws are tedious but are great for learning the material it covers, make sure to start these early as c++ and what he has you do can make it a pain to debug. His exams are average to difficult but he allows a cheat sheet so its not too bad.
Dr Rincon goes above and beyond to ensure that his students succeed. His vast knowledge of C++, combined with his caring & approachable demeanor, creates an optimal learning environment. If you're willing to put in the effort & actively engage with the material, you can expect to gain a solid foundation in C++ under his guidance.
Took class in summer. Super understanding about all the material being crammed into a summer session and wanted students to succeed. In lectures, he focused heavily on showing live coding, either writing fresh code or editing prepared examples, which was fantastic. Also was always ready to go the extra mile for students. Highly recommend
He goes by things quick during his lectures and your better off learning on your own; Knows what he is talking about but jumps from topic to topic a lot;
An extremely knowledgeable professor that would go out of his way for each and every student in the classroom! He definitely does move a little quick, but studying some outside of the classroom will more than make up for it. Rincon prioritizes teaching algorithmic thinking in his classes, a powerful skill for any developer to have. Would recommend!
There will be weekly labs and a monthly exam. Taking this class as a beginner was difficult because of the large learning curve of programming. He is very knowledgeable about C++ and his lectures are fast, but his accent makes it hard to follow at times. He is a very caring and understanding person and will help you during tests.
He is a great teacher and you can pass his class without ever going to lectures. He is understanding and always helpful and will help you get an A. If you get anything below an A in this class then you are the problem and you messed up. One of the easiest As I've ever made while learning a bunch. Highly recommend.
Lectures are very long but cover everything you need to know. The professor is very respectful to his students and always answers questions in class. He also records all lectures and posts the powerpoints online. There is very little homework and exams aren't hard as you're allowed to use 1 sheet of notes (front and back).
Basically a free grade if you know C++, don't procrastinate, and ask for help when needed (via the professor's office hours or via the Discord server run by students). Due dates are strict, but you are given a month to complete each assignment. Each assignment builds upon the previous, so procrastination will easily snowball you to an F.
Great professor, this class is only as hard as you make it to be. Utilize Professor Rincon, he opens himself to students to be used as a resource for your success. I came in this class with barely any C++ knowledge [transfer], but with lots of time and effort did very well on the programming assignments with the resource provided in the course.
Professor Rincon is super knowledgeable and supportive. He's always available during office hours and his TAs are there to help too. The course was tough, but he's committed to making sure you get it. The programming assignments are hard, but they're meant to help you understand. I totally recommend taking his course with him!
Patient, lenient, organized, inspirational, the list goes on. Not a lot of professors in UH CS department are as this good anymore, take him if you can! He made OS much easier and far less daunting than it sounds, and don't be scared to ask him a couple of questions during the test as he might just give you the answer ;)
Love Dr. Rincon. If he could teach all the CS courses at UH I would take him every single time.
Not the easiest class but also not so difficult if you study. He is knowledgable, caring, and answers emails immediately.
Professor Rincon is the best in the department. He is reasonable, caring, and gives amazing lectures. Everything is so well organized, you can clearly tell he actually puts effort into teaching. I think the CS department could learn a lot from him, he should be the benchmark for CS profs.
good professor. if you fail exam 1 25% of your exam 2 grade will be added to exam 1 same thing with the final and exam 2. Theory part of tests aren't bad but to really prepare for the coding questions make sure to do the practice exams and go to the TA's every chance you get their the main reason im ending with an A. Homework is pretty quick.
Professor Rincon is very clear and helpful in lectures and in office hours. Prepare good cheatsheets for the exams. Work on the PAs ASAP and get help just as quick so you don't fall behind.
Professor Rincon is a great professor. His lectures are informative, and he really goes out of his way to help students as long as they make an effort (any effort at all really) in his class. You don't have to show up for lectures but it helps, and the class is graded of 3 HWs and 3 tests. All of which he gives ample time and resources for.
Despite my grade, I still loved this class and Prof. Rincon! He was truly caring and he wanted everyone to succeed in class. Only 4 tests (no midterm/final), lab activities, and reading assignments. There were retake opportunities for the tests. Attend his lectures as they are very helpful.
I took Dr. Rincon for both 1437 and 3360 and he is very knowledgeable about everything in these courses and beyond. All the expectations for the course are laid out very clearly in his syllabus, and he grades reasonably quickly. He is available outside of class for any questions on assignments or test prep and wants all of his students to succeed.
Super awesome guy. He cares a ton about his students. I went to his office hours plenty to the point we became friends. The class is very difficult, though. You really have to work for your grade and the assignments are killer. There's not a lot due, but they're very challenging. Absolutely join the class discord.
He is a caring professor that is willing to help if you ask. My grade was not what I wanted but it had nothing to do with Professor Rincon. I think his passion for the subject shows during his lectures and despite the course being difficult he is very fair. He is arguably the best pick for operating systems. Class is challenging, but not impossible
He's not caring at all. The class had to BEG him for extra credit because everyone was failing so he gave extra credit as an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT EXAM QUESTION we HAD to get right, otherwise we would NOT get extra credit. His MC exams are based on 1,000 slides, it's impossible to pass it. The people who are saying he cares are LYING to you.
Pretty difficult subject but professor made it easy. Very knowledgable and perfectly explained every thing. Allows cheat sheets which guarantee a 100 on MC part of test. Coding parts of tests are extremely difficult as expected with this subject but paying attention to his lectures and powerpoints will let you get an A. Amazing prof. Hard subject.
really good professor, lectures help a lot throughout the semester so attending them will only help you. offers retakes for all four quizzes (fourth replaces the final exam) and gives very good examples in class. the class is difficult, but if you're willing to learn, rincon will help you and offer good feedback.
My last CS professor was terrible, so Rincon blew him out the water he was so good. He does go quick, and UNLESS YOU READ, you will be lost. The quizzes were difficult ngl, and yes, we were all failing, BUT he does explain the concepts better than most. As long as you attend the lectures, read, do the assignments, and ask for help, YOU WILL PASS.
Dr. Rincon is a great professor. He's respects students, gives great lectures and clear instructions about what to expect on the exam, so you will do well with enough practice. My final grade is a 100/100. No curve but there are extra credit activities before each exam. Cheat sheets allowed on exams which really helped. Best UH CS professor.
Probably one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. Rincon and his TAs make the class so well-structured and easy to navigate that it is impossible not to do well in this class. So, if you need to take COSC 3360, go with Rincon. He is the greatest professor for this class.
Pretty difficult class if you don't have a background in coding. Participation does not matter and he's pretty chill.
Its a very hard class. this class will make you cry and make you feel like useless. very hard grader. exams are also very hard. also the extra credit questions are hard. The best thing about this class would be the TAs only. they are very helpful. dont take his class.
OS is a notoriously difficult class, but thought it can't be THAT bad. Many rules changed from the prev sem. (cheatsheet isn't online, no excel). Exam grades dropped so bad now (~55 avg) but still NO CURVE! Extremely hard all-or-nothing programming on exam & 35 point reduction for using help on hw. Rincon is nice, but there should be some leniency.
Not sure what the other students were expecting, this is a very easy class. 3 programming assignments, each given a month in advance, and only takes a few hours. Theory on exams are verbatim from slides in lecture. Cheatsheet front/back is allowed with no limits on font size. TA's are involved and resourceful. Rincon himself is caring and helpful.
If your taking this class, def get rincon if you can. the class is really easy and relaxed, he posts the lectures before each quiz (there are four in total) and the readings outside of class are super easy to do and he gives us two months to finish each section of readings. there are two programming assignments outside of class that are easy
For each exam, there is a 10 point bonus asked the lecture before the exam, and you can use a cheat sheet on the exams. He is very passionate in the lectures and explain's each concept well. There is no partial credit on bonuses, and there is almost no partial on exam questions, with slight mistakes making you ineligible for partial credit.
