Take Vega, especially if you're bad at Math. Exams are just as he presents problems in class & he reviews everything extensively. He's willing to spend countless hours helping you outside of class in office hours. I have never seen a professor who is so interested in making sure students understand the material.
Carlos Vega is a great teacher, just go to class, try to learn the subject and don't forget to go to his office. He teaches well and wants you to do good on the tests. I'd definetely take him.
Difficult course, but a really nice guy. Tries to help students as much as possible, and hot for a math professor too. He's a young guy with a good attitude. Fair grader, but doesn't provide much of a review before exams. If you are interested in the subject, it should be an easy class. For me, it was grueling. Also do the Homework!
Amazing professor. Great personality, a bit quirky but in a cool way. Attractive (hot), which encourages me to go to class.. Overall lectures get better. He is very helpful during office hours. Smart, calm, collected, and actually cares about student's success. Quirky sense of humor, but very intelligent.
Super approachable. Makes it easy to get help if needed(you wont need extra help w him tho) The 2 class's before tests are review and test questions are the same questions done in the review but slightly different. Class tests based off book so lecture not necessary but if you go, you are guaranteed an A. HW optional, tests use HW questions tho
Carlos is a cool dude. Definitely take his class. Smart fella, and responds to emails quickly. Best teacher in the department.
Very helpful during office hours. Makes an effort for students, always available if you need him. Laid back personality.
Makes exams harder than they need to be and is hard to reach outside of class. Doesnt post notes at all. Take any other teacher. His rating is not accurate at all. No curves also.
I have no idea why his reviews are so good on here. If you want to fail Calc 2, enroll in Professor Vega's class. His exam questions are extremely difficult, and he barely gives partial credit on his exams. No curve either. More than half of our class is on track to fail at the moment.
Professor Vega just copies his notes on the board and doesn't know anything about the class. You ask him when the test is, he has no answer. You ask him what the test is about, he says he will email about it later. You ask him if we can have a study guide, he says he will think about it. Communication sucks and tests are too hard. He is hot though.
Expect this class to tank your GPA. Gives reviews and hw that has nothing to do with the exams. Hard grader and impossible exams. Don't listen to the rating at all. He might be the worst teacher I have ever had in my life.
kind of quiet but extremely passionate about mathematics and seems to be pretty smart too. This guy will HUNT for credit for you in your exams once he sees you are trying and is very approachable, willing to negotiate and help. Will also be very available for assistance in work when asked, just need to initiate that on your own so keep up
don't take this class . unless you want your spirit crushed. easily the worst teacher I have ever had. four four categories. lecture, home work, test review, and tests/exams. and none of the material matches doesn't matter if you can do the homework and reviews forwards, backwards and in another language. THE PRACTICE MATERIAL DOESNT MATCH TESTS
Overall, he is a nice guy and wants you to do well. It's his first semester here so he has been trying to figure things out. The first test he gave was insanely hard, but the second was more similar to the homework and doable. He should get better with time, but for now I would recommend going with another professor if possible.
Hard professor, he means well and is very knowledgeable but if you're not amazing at calculus, or math in general, don't take him. I put in a lot of work to this class and it is still super hard. You also don't get a cheat sheet on any exams when other 162 sections do. Take him if you're good at math though. He's very responsive as well.
Horrible professor. I am saying this even though I received good grades on the exams (I taught everything to myself by watching videos). He never answered questions asked and if he did it was in a condescending manner. 3/4 of the class failed- bc of his teaching , not bc of lack of effort. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
If you want to take Calc II again next semester please go ahead and take your class with Professor Vega. I have never gotten below an A- in a math class but now im on track to fail along with the majority of my class. He refuses to answer any questions about the tests and when he does his answers are vague. His exams are hard and he grades harshly.
Might be the worse professor I have ever had. Just reads notes that don't help all class. Take anyone else.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. He doesn't teach at all. DO NOT TAKE FOR CALC 2
Prof. Vega is a nice person, but not a very good teacher for calc 2, compared to other classes from students I have spoken to, they get much more help on exams. The lectures never made any sense, and we never had an exam schedule throughout the entire semester. Again, really nice person and responds quickly, but not the best teacher in my opinion.
Literally engraved every homework/review problem we were ever given into my head and still nearly failed the class. A nightmare come true is what the teacher really is
He is a very smart guy, but cannot teach to save his life. He constantly makes mistakes in class and when someone calls him out he gets mad and says everyone makes mistakes, but when we do we get 50% credit taken away. He takes forever to grade, and I can't apply to internships because I don't have a complete GPA because he takes so long to grade
I have loved every math teacher I've had, this professor is an outlier. Not good at responding to emails but he is nice and can be lenient at times. Overall, would not reccomend.
Came back for another review b/c after just simply asking about my final exam and the curve, he rudely made assumptions about me and my work ethic. He told me I could have put more effort AFTER he told me to focus on other classes and basically told me to put in less effort into his class. Didn't help me either when I wanted to go over my exam.
Well, if showing up late on the first day of school without a syllabus to give the class doesn't describe Vega, I honestly don't know what will (yes, that happened). He is perhaps the worst professor I have ever encountered. Will give no credit for pages of work. Does not teach or finish material. Will fail the entire class w/ no explanation. AWFUL
I am doing decently not because of Mr. Vega, but because I took this class in high school, so I passed with a decent grade because of previous knowledge. However, when using his often incorrect notes and lectures, the material seemed much more complicated, and more frequently, way harder than it needed to be. He is a smart guy but awful teacher.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Avoid at all costs, any other professor for math 108 will be better. He makes tons of mistakes and barely knows how to do the problems himself. He takes months and months to grade each test. He does not teach you whatsoever. He grades tests extremely harshly and makes them harder than any other 108 professor.
Vega NEVER finished the last unit before the final exam. He NEVER finished the material before any unit test either. Office hours were WACK and caused more stress than what it was worth. Maybe he is a shy, nice guy, but at the end of the day we are paying thousands for this and most kids end up with a C due to his terrible teaching. AVOID HIM!!
AVOID. I took AP calculus last year and all of this material was foreign to me. Yes, math is different in college than hs, but he explained each and every concept in a way that made no sense. Never handed tests back in a timely fashion. Did not finish the material. I went into every test feeling unprepared. Even if you study expect a C. DON'T TAKE.
DO NOT TAKE! If u need to take a math class, Carlos is not an option. This man does not teach one bit, he writes down the notes and lets u figure it out on your own. Not to forget the multiple times the notes he writes have mistakes, also u will not finish the exams in the time given. Only plus, it makes no difference if you go to class or don't.
Even though I did fine I would have rather taken the W and withdrawn than finished the semester in the class. Literally terrible. He made so many people cry so many times.
His teaching is lackluster, if even existent. Attendance is not mandatory, but I went to every class, and got almost nothing from class. If you take this course be prepared to teach yourself literally everything.
Avoid at all costs!!! You will fail if you have this man as your professor. Every lecture is filled with mistakes and so poorly explained that you gain nothing from attending class.
He's not very engaging in the classroom and his work is done traditionally- on the whiteboard. I found it very hard to follow his notes or even really contact him outside of class. He lacks grace and understanding and is very adamant on no-phone use in the classroom. I could not learn a single concept in Pre-Calculus off of his teaching alone.
A nice guy who really tries his best to get students to learn. Sometimes the lectures can be boring but you can tell he tries his best to make them somewhat entertaining and keep people engaged. I thought he was a solid professor.
Never take a Carlos Vega class. This man deserves the chair. Hes rude to his students with constant snap backs and cant teach for his life. For a class full of students who have taken calculus 1 in high school, he some how makes the content even harder to understand and only allows anything to be done in his dumb specific way.
so bad...
Never have I once been driven to the point to actually write a review until this guy. If you don't have a firm understanding of calculus beforehand, expect to do terrible. His teaching is worse than trying to learn calc yourself. When you are confused by a problem, he would rather watch you continue to struggle than walk you through it. Don't take
First half of semester I failed every test and quiz. Doesn't take attendance and honestly you barely learn anything in class. The reason that I passed was solely because I taught myself EVERYTHING and studied 30 hours for every test. However there are worse teachers and he is surprisingly helpful during his office hours and outside of class
DO NOT TAKE. Hes not good at teaching the material. Hes a tough grader on tests and quizzes.
If you want to fail, take his class. Not necessary stress. The guy is rude. You might be smart but you cannot teach. Waste of your money.
Just awful!
The professor was fine. You show up for a lecture, learn, then given homework if you finish a section. The homework is extremely difficult, taking hours, and is worth very little, but you need to do it to do well on the quizzes and exams, which make up essentially all your grade. He grades nicely so long as you show all your work.
A lot of these reviews don't take into account that calc is hard to begin with. Sometimes the homework has harder problems than his lectures but he is willing to help and teach you how to do them if you ask after class or in office hours. He also posts extra review problems before tests which are helpful. I've definitely had worse math professors.
Just a very difficult class. Teaching style makes things more difficult than it needs to be. Will meet with you outside of class and can be helpful, but just not a good teacher. He understands material but cannot relay information well.
NEVER take him if you have another chance. On top of being late to almost every single class his lectures move at a very fast pace. They are not mandatory but miss one you will be left behind. He gives a date for quizzes/exams but will not review material or help you prepare for it.
Professor Vega is an awful teacher. He understands math very well but does not know how to teach it to the students. His lectures are impossible to follow along to and on top of that he insists on having a terrible attitude toward the students in every class.
Be ready to teach yourself because he sure won't! Not only are his classes unhelpful, he insists on teaching unnecessary things (he admits that a lot of Unit 1 is not taught by other professors, nor will it be helpful for the rest of the class) and his homework is 10x harder than any problem you do in class. He's also grumpy and catty.
Professor Vega is genuinely the worst math professor I've ever had. He's made me contemplate switching my major or dropping out entirely before I realized that his class is just at the upmost extreme and it doesn't make any sense. He doesn't care about you or your grade so good luck if you got stuck with him. If you have a choice, switch.
I don't know what he expected by being vague about what's on exams to the point where he eventually stopped giving the few guide tips that he provided at the beginning which by the way did not help. His exams have questions that you haven't seen before. He's difficult to reach outside of class and doesn't like to meet and discuss his own course.
Dr. Vega was an amazing professor. He had no problem clarifying any questions I had and was always available to discuss my grades during his office hours.
Professor Vega gets a lot of hate, but in reality, he is simply a nerd. He really understands the math, and is good at explaining the concepts. However, his class is really hard to pay attention cause the subject matter is boring. Stay engaged. He is socially awkward in an endearing way, and he can be funny at times. His office hours are dope too!
He barely teaches the content and then assigns homework significantly harder then what he went over.
Classes are a waste of time because he doesn't even teach in any useful ways. Gives quizzes every week, exams pile up (if you are an engineering student dont take this teacher because along with everything else you have to do you will have to deal with teaching yourself the classes while managing quizzes and exams in every other class.)
I don't understand why everyone is making him out to be so bad. He teaches the content very well in my opinion, I always learn a lot in class. The homework is really long and much harder than exams, but that is because the whole calculus department assigns it. His tests are extremely fair and if you go to office hours he is nice.
Dont understand why everybody is hating. All of the quizzes are on the 3 hardest problems on each homework which arent very difficult. The exams can sometimes be tricky but if you study you will be fine. Only advice I'd give is don't skip because its hard to catch up if you fall behind.
He knows math. Vega has his moments where he's pretty cool. I don't understand the hate. If you go to one or two office hours before a test you will be good and do the Webassign homework even if it is difficult. Tests are reasonably hard but what else do you expect from a math course. Overall HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you want to learn Calc well.
Highly recommend taking Vega! These reviews are bad because calc is hard in general. Sure he calls kids out who distract the class or don't pay attention, but it's because he wants us to succeed. Study early for tests and you'll be fine. Go to office hours.
Such an amazing guy. Always very nice and willing to help out students. Would have office hours almost every day and extensive office hours whenever there were exams. I thought his lectures were very structed and I learned a lot from them. Calc II is a very hard class, but I think he teaches it well.
Professor Vega isn't the evil villain he's made out to be on this site... but he's also not great. He clearly cares about the subject matter and wants you to learn it, but when you don't understand it, he responds to you in a condescending manner. His class isn't the hardest thing in the world, but he's a pain.
My only quams with the class was really that he had like two weeks of instruction time at the end and instead of reviewing decided to teach a whole brand new topic that had physics concepts for some reason. The entire class was confused and I think it detrimentally hurt us. He is available if you need him after class (except near calc 1 test)
People are hating on my boy but he's really not that bad. His class is boring and it can be hard to pay attention. The homework got insanely hard sometimes but the tests/quizzes are much easier, just review the examples from class. Office hours are helpful and he clearly knows the math extremely well so just ask questions.
Ignore the bad reviews and take him. He is the best calc, and possibly math, professor in the school. He takes his time to explain concepts, and his explanations are very clear and concise. Just do assignments and use them to prepare for quizzes and exams. Easy A or A+.
Very hard class. Disproportionately harder than other 162 sections. Lectures are significantly easier than the homework and exams. You're expected to tested on very particular examples that you most likely would only see on one question of the homework. Is open frequently for office hours but is also very passive aggressive during class and hours.
He's an okay professor to be honest. He taught the subject matter relatively well, but the lectures were extremely boring, but maybe that's just because it is a Calc class. It was as hard as you would imagine a Calc 1 class in college being. Overall, I would take him again because I have heard way worse about other professors here.
One of the better math professors at UM. Just do the homework and practice after every class and you will be fine. He's a reasonable guy who is always willing to help and does a good job explaining if you ask him to slow it down for you.
Dr. Vega is an excellent professor. His lectures are clear and easy to understand if you pay attention and take notes. He is clear about what he looks for in exams and gives partial credit if you show work. The low ratings are because calc is hard and needs practice. Dr. Vega is kind and helps a lot in office hours and knows all students by name.
This guy is so chill. I don't understand the hate train. The guy is super chill and knows his math really well. His explanations are very clear and he wants you to understand math from its roots. Homework indeed is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than class examples, but that is a good thing since there is where you really get to understand the math.
Worst Professor to exist. The classes are depressing. He has this unreasonable system of "justice" with his grading. If he thinks you took less time to solve problems on exams compared to other people he will take points off for "not showing work" since "other people put in the effort to show it" even if its as simple as computing a basic limit.
He does not care about his students! Teaches the lectures as if you are already supposed to know what everything is, which makes it very difficult if you have not already taken Calculus. Not very caring in or outside the classroom. Tests are very hard. Take another professor!
Worst professor I have ever had. Shame on UM for allowing such a poor professor to teach and negatively impact the educations of so many students. Avoid at all costs.
Don't take this guy. His tests are nothing like what is taught in-class, and there is an excessive amount of homework. Very picky grader too. I took Calculus in high school with the same material, and got a B+. Did significantly worse here. My grandma can do a better job teaching. If you want to keep your mental health sane, take another professor.
I had professor Vega last semester and he was amaizing. At first I was a bit scared becoause of the reviews, but after some classes I realized he is a great professor who wants you to improve and pass the class. Trust me, he is a great professor and you should take him for MATH161
Do the homework early. I got an A because all of the quiz and test problems were on the homework that was due the same day. He makes the lectures clear and easy to follow and I would take him again. It is very possible to do well with him especially because he makes a lot of time for students and you will learn Calculus. He chill.
Bad, crazy amount of homework, but he's nice and if you're polite he'll help you pass
Unless your a math genuis and you already know calc 2, do not take him, he is extremely awkward and pratically talks to himself during lectures, the quizzes messed me up, only two questions and worth so much. i went to office hours everyday and was super nice and he did not help me pass dont listen to anyone. Most people fail exams not normal!
I once showed him my way of visualizing a trig sub, just drawing a triangle Sergio Hernandez agreed with me in office hours but Vega was bothered. The next day, quiz wasdesigned to block my method He told the class only to listen to him not other resources Awful I was fooled by reviews saying he's "sweet and awkward" cute won't get me a good grade.
Don't take him unless you already know calculus. he doesn't explain things thoroughly and just assumes you know everything. he also doesn't post the grades on blackboard and takes really long to grade quizzes and tests.
Absolutely impossible! On top of UM's already atrocious calculus department, he takes the cake. Barely anything decides your grade with tests being worth over half of your grade, and the tests are department made, while his teaching doesn't necessarily prepare you for them. I took AP calc in high school and got an A, then had to drop this class.
Homework and tests are significantly harder than what he went over in class. Took ages to grade anything. Stressful class. It is passable, but your mental health will definitely suffer a bit.
Dr.Vega should have a much higher rating. He is one of the best professors in the department. He actually explains concepts and wants you to do well. He helped me so much when I took this class, I should have taken him for Calc 2. Take Dr.Vega, he rewards proactiveness and effort, so if you try you will do well. top 5 professor in the math dept.
He is an amazing professor. He explains everything clearly and does not waste time on material that is not on the exams. He prepares you well for every single exam and quiz. If you go to his classes and do the homework you can easily get an A in the class, I got a 100% on exam 1. He is amazing, all you have to do is go to class and do the homework!
Very kind professor. He knows what he is teaching but the homework is a lot harder than the lecture. If you want to do well in his class, don't study the lecture, study the homework. He takes very long to grade.
He teaches alright in class if you show up and pay attention. He will always choose the hardest homework problem to put on the exams so if you study those you should be fine. He is definitely a tough grader and will knock of a lot of points for small errors, but his grading scale ensures there is a built in curve of sorts.
He just is simply the worst math teacher you can take, all of his assessments are significantly harder than any other teacher and he does not do a good job of explaining how to do anything. you have to learn his quizzes are solely based on in class problems and tests are based off the homework to have any chance of passing. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Vega was a nice professor. His lectures are okay and if you show up to office hours he provides you with the help you need. However, he grades pretty tough.
The best professor for Calculus 1/2. Calculus requires a lot of practice regardless of the professor, but Dr. Vega was always there to help and made learning the material much more straightforward and easy. Multiple office hours each week and easily accessible. Go to class, do the hw, and ask for help. Dr. Vega wants students to do well.
He was not great
amazing teacher. attendance isn't mandatory but you should go to class as he teaches very well and answers questions well. i got 95+ on all three exams and they are not hard as long as you show your work and do what is taught in class. he's very caring too as I was having medical issues around an exam and he allowed me to take it at a later date
Genuinely don't know what all the bad reviews are about, he's the best math professor I've had at UM. He's very clear and easy to understand, super accommodating and easy to reach outside of class. If you go to class and do the homework you'll be fine.
the greatest math professor at umiami
Really good at explaining things and helping
Class can be a little slow and repetitive at times but I still think it's worth showing up for. This is my first math class here so idk how much better or worse it can get; I imagine hes not THE best but nowhere near the worst. I don't think the quizzes or exams are too difficult and he is a pretty fair grader. Overall, really kind and easy going.
He is a very chill guy who gives LOTS of partial credit. Many times I got half the steps on a question wrong and he would give me 80% for that. You can skip as much as you want too. Teaches a bit slowly, but I love his calm voice and demeanor. Honestly people are just complaining about Calculus here, not the professor. Would give him a 6
Don't take him horrible teacher doesn't prepare you well for exams and gives basically no extra credit. Much better other professors to take.
I would give him my kidney. Take his class if you get the chance.
He is much better than his RateMyProfessor rating. Goes in depth on lectures, gives easy quizzes and extra credit on homeworks, as well as a big extra credit assignment at the end of the year. His teaching methods can be a bit boring, but he prepares you well for exams and the final. Would take again.
Horrible professor. Claims to know the material but he does not know how to lecture or teach it. When students ask him questions he either does not answer it or tries to answer it, gets confused, and then moves on without answering the question because "we are very behind and I don't have time for this right now." Also, he is always late to class.
vega isn't THAT bad. he does spend like 2 months on limits which is so unnecessary and rushed the hard topics. if you can take another professor DO THAT, but if he's ur only choice, he isn't that bad seriously. he does want. to make sure that his students understand the content and he does have office hours. he's okay!
Lots of lecturing on calculus, and not allowed to use calculators; but, funny how his lecture problems & answers were always in his notes like he used a calculator to create his notes. It's unfair & unethical for the Math Dept to prohibit the use of calculators by students, yet the Professors don't demonstrate raw proficiency w/out calculator
The exams are very similar to the homework and the quizzes are practically the lecture notes. To be successful in this class, it is crucial to do lots of practice problems. Definitely manageable. There's lots of office hours, so take advantage of them if needed. Overall, he's a good teacher and goes thru content thoroughly. Also a fair grader.
I thought Dr. Vega was ok, not the best but also not the worst. Honestly, his teaching style really just didn't resonate with me. Calc 2 is also a really difficult class, and having a monotone prof didn't help. But, as long as you pay attention and practice and utilize his office hours, you'll do fine.
Professor Vega is a very knowledgeable professor. He never takes attendance, and sometimes his lectures can be repetitive, but I recommend attendance to get the best grade. He has lots of office hours and is very caring and wants you to succeed.
