Drawing II with Hatton is like a studio class at a modern art school: the crit is king, with less focus on technique. You can draw as representational or abstract as you wish, but the work must be conceptual. Geared more toward modernist fine arts than illustration. Personally, Hatton is highly intelligent, polished, diplomatic. Very nice person.
Carlson has integrates art history with drawing lessons effectively. He manages to balance the varying needs of students of widely different abilities. Carlson plays some great music during drawing time and I have the suspicion he spends lots of time creating playlists in iTunes.
Professor Hatton is extremely knowledgeable and quite unassuming. He has a rich knowledge of the art world and introduced me to many new artists and concepts. He is always helpful and approachable. He's class is quite demanding but he also manages to make it interesting and we covered a lot of ground during the semester.
Carlson is my favorite teacher of all time, extremely helpful, kind and intelligent teacher
Awesome teacher who spends much time on helping students improve their art abilities.
Draw and listen to some really nice music in class. Love it! c:asdf
Call Me bossy but he needs someone to give him organization tips. Otherwise smart and ready to give advice over coffee.
He is an excellent teacher, I think most art teachers are touchy and a little full of themselves, but Hatton is very unbiased. I think he honestly just wants to help you improve. He was pretty laid back and was generally pretty understanding, considering most art teachers are kind of strict.
Love him! He is very helpful and nice. He really wants to help you if you need help and you can see his passion and knowledge of art. Wish he could be my prefessor for all my art classes hehe
By far he is the best art professor I've had a smc, his lectures are interesting, his good looking!,goes around the room to check on everyone's art, gives you feedback, we do lots of still life in class, gives art hw every weekend and we do critiques the day it's due. I recommend taking his class you won't regret it!
Interesting Art instructor.Learned alot worked very hard for my A grade.
amazing class. Wish I could have more classes with this professor.
One of the better drawing instructors @SMC!
Real nice guy; the unassuming hipster type. He'll never grade you too hard and is a decent teacher. Work load isn't bad but I can see some people who don't often draw putting in 10 hours a week or so. Worth taking!
Very good instructor!
Excellent!I am not an Art major learned so much from him.Do expect to put time and thought in all your projects. You will do well!! Thank you Mr.Hatton
I was a bit disappointed in the class. I expected to draw a lot more and focus on technique. The teacher is very nice and actually quite funny but I could not stand the 1-2 hour critiques each class! And the demos if we were lucky to get one every few weeks were only 10-15 minutes. I felt like he was "phoning it in."
Too much time spent on critique (at least 2 hrs/class); very little drawing in class and most of works become homework, which leads to too much homework; a new project for each week-very busy; the professor shows preference towards a certain art style (contemporary art)
What an excellent instructor! Compared to most art teachers, Carlson is laid-back and wants to help you get good at art. He is very easy to talk to and makes class interesting. I always look forward to his classes every week. Take him!
This guy is really cool. His class is interesting and challenging. He really wants the best for the students and helps with anything you need to know. I highly recommend this class while at SMC!!
I was amazed at Carlson's commitment to his students and class! He is highly intelligent, kind, generous and helpful. Will guide you in thinking on your own and not his or someone elses. You will definitely benefit whether or not you are an art major. Wished he offered more classes.
Instructor is OK, though not too bad. The class consists of lectures, long critiques, extra credits, and time to work on projects in class. He does provide help whenever you need it. It's up to you to get the most of it and enjoy!
very ambitious instructor(large number of projects), who believes that we all only take his class and no other classes at all; watching a lot of DVDs and not much work during class hours; a half of class time devoted to talking and waiting for your turn; agree that he likes a certain art style
He's funny, patient and willing to help. He remembers things about students. If you are an Art major, TAKE him! He helps a lot and does give you info about everything that is relevant to art and may help you with your major.
Long critique? Well, if you get to upper division classes, this is nothing compared to that, so he kinda helps you to prepare. He's pretty open to new trials/ideas. Amount of techniques covered was appropriate for the length of the semester. He writes in bad grammar if that usually bugs you, it is going to bugs you. Anyhow, art major? Take him!
He told us that he will teach us how to draw using pastel and then he never taught us. WTH. He often likes mysterious drawings that normal people cannot understand. Therefore, draw as if you are Picasso. The most importantly, his class is freaking boring, period. Take his class if you want to waste your money and time, good luck.
He was such a great teacher and truly tried to make time and help each individual student. (especially in art 1) he does give some demanding homework but if you're an art major then you wont think its too bad. You will definitely learn and I highly recommend him! make sure not to fall behind in your sketchbook homework, all the little points add up
He's awesome, helpful and flexible. you learn a lot of material but you have a lot time to get it done.. you do a lot of examples in class which prepares you for the homework assignments. make sure to turn in all hw b/c it will affect your grade more then you think. there are critiques every first day of the week which takes up half the class time
The class was a great introduction to art from pencil drawing to other multiple media. The most amazing thing about this class is the teacher. His mind is very open which allows you to create your own art. He was also patient and nice to answer all your questions and show the techniques that you need. A great teacher and a great class to attend.
This is one of those classes at SMC that could be at a much "better" school. Many mediums and techniques are demonstrated and there is a lot of flexibility in terms of what mediums you can use. The critiques give really useful feedback. He goes far to share his knowledge of the art world. By the last assignment the entire class's work was amazing
I'm an art major and very serious about what I'm doing! Professor Hatton is absolutely great !he gives very interesting assignments, teaches so many different techniques and talks about very cool artists. I grew enormously as an artist because of his class! Thank you Professor Hatton!
Great art class that covers a lot, and with covering a lot comes A LOT of work. However I think that was a good thing because of how much you develop, but I do not think that it is a class for those that are just looking for an easy grade. Yes critic is long, but they are a lot of fun if you participate. Has a lot of great ideas that he shares.
You don't need to be good at drawing to succeed in this class. As long as you put in the effort, your work will be recognized.
Hatton is a fair teacher, in the end it is up to the student to make the most out of the tools he gives us. Homework assignments take a long time, and if you are taking more than 2 concurrent art classes, I would recommend dropping one if you are serious about this class. Wish there was more instruction, showing instead of telling.
Class was very inspiring, interesting and fun. Take his class and you will learn a lot! Two thumbs up
He is extremely kind. He often give students chances if they miss something. It's important that you finish every HW. You don't have to be professional at drawing to get an A, if he sees you SPEND TIME & FINISH IT. He would give you a good grade. this class requires a lot of time to draw. Do not take it if you have multiple art classes
Carlson is DA BEST IN THE ART DEPT he is always there for you Guides you if you are transferring You will use graphite, charcoal, ink Materials total was around $80
Hatton is one of the best art teachers I've had! You don't have to know how to draw to pass this class, he gives good feedback and is very open minded when it comes to different art styles. Expect homework over the weekends but as long as you put some effort he will give you a good grade, just truly a great art teacher!!
EXCELLENT Simply the best!!! Since the class meets once a week there is HW to keep up with to get your " A" grade. He's one of the best art instructors ever!!! Don't slack off and get behind on your projects and you will do well in his class!
I must say i have learned a lot from Professor Hatton, more than I realized. I'm more of a free artist but have really learned how to draw with more technical skills. He is super talented in his own right. NIce, funny intelligent professor
Hatton is the real deal, you will learn so much from him! I really enjoyed being in his class, he does give a lot of homework but as long as you do not fall behind you should be fine. Also, don't take his 8am class if you are not a morning person! He deducts points for multiple absences. He is very helpful and gives good feedback. Simply, the best.
He is an awesome professor I have ever had
A great class to take but if you are absent a lot, you should reconsider. I had to drop because I got too far behind in his class and I wasn't able to catch up. I would take this class with him again under different circumstances.
If you are advanced in your skills then the class may seem a little slow at first, but do not overlook his class. Great project prompts bc they rly challenge both technical and creative skills! Also, he truly cares about his students and will take time to even help you with portfolio stuff. My only complaint is that he needs to teach more classes.
I took him this Fall and loved his class. He is so nice and such an inspirational guy. He truly cares for his students and takes the time to help them individually. He is very honest and will tell you how it is but I'm the nicest way! He is so funny and makes the class as much fun as possible! Highly recommend
Can be an easy class if you're an art major or interested in art; I noticed non-art majors struggling more when keeping up with work. Kind of a downer when some students show little interest/effort, but Mr. Hatton is forgiving and nice to everyone. Don't wait until last minute to do the sketchbook hw. Overall great teacher for beginning art!
Wonderful and supportive, gives constructive comments and tries to help without telling you step by step. Very understanding, huge pet peeve is late work/unfinished work, assigns projects that are doable in time frame but still push your skills. If your work reflects time and effort, he will grade you fairly and you'll get an A! Taking his 20B next
Good teacher, easy class you'll get an A
One of the best art teachers ive ever had! He u derstands everyone is on a different level and grades you based off your own inprovement which is so helpful if youre new to artistry or have been doing it your whole life! You learn so much about art history as well as new media almost every week! only downside is he stabs work w/ pins. best class
If given the opportunity to take his class take it! I learned a lot and received a lot of good advice (:
The best professors at Santa Monica College i've ever taken since the Fall of 2014. His grading criteria is pretty straight forward with sketchbooks, homework, the critiques, class projects plus a final art project that you must build on your own that doesn't exists. I really enjoyed his class and definitely recommend it for all art majors.
Mr. Hatton's an awesome teacher! He's gives really helpful feedback on projects and obviously wants to see his students succeed and improve their art. Do the work, show up to class, and you'll do well. I learned so much about drawing thanks to him :D
Was very bad at drawing but he was very helpful and understanding and graded based on effort and a clear understanding of the subject of study and the techniques used for the project. He is also extremely talented.
One of the best art teachers I've ever had. There's tons of assignments, but you end up gaining a bunch of new skills. Hatton's pretty cool, like if Patrick Jane was teaching you drawing basics? 10/10 would take again
Mr. Hatton is a great art professor! He offers a lot of information, assistance, and tools to help. He is patient and very kind. If I am to take another art class, it will most definitely be with him.
You do have to buy material but you will have materials left over to continue to draw after. He is such an amazing teacher in how he gives you time to do work and give a motivational moment so you can continue your artwork it is such a beautiful way to express yourself. It is such a work since theres no book just pay attention when he lectures.
Excellent teacher and very inspirational! He is an amazing artist and gives great feedback.
I HIGHLY recommend taking Professor Hatton for an art class! Professor Hatton offers genuine feedback on your work and explicitly states what he is looking for in the assignments, and how he will grade them. Professor Hatton also creates a very comfortable class environment. Overall, a wonderful experience!!
Professor Hatton was by far the best art professor I have had since my art 1 high school teacher. He is very understanding and wants to help you become a better artist. He made taking an online art class so fun and easy!
Prof. Hatton is perceptive, kind, has a great sense of humor and an impressive knowledge of current and past artists. I thought he could have been a bit more critical at times but he was very encouraging and looked for the good in whatever was submitted.
TAKE ART 20B. I think that I've already given this professor a review for art20A but I'm writing one again because I loved this class so much. Even though it was online I still learned a lot and Hatton is very kind and helpful! Take this class !
Very helpful and friendly. Gives god feedback, has good example videos for classes
Prof. Hatton is an amazing artist and professor, I HIGHLY recommend this class. Throughout the course he was very kind, understanding, and offered helpful feedback. The class assignments never felt like a chore because he made assignments very enjoyable.
His a great professor even on my first time taking a drawing class. Will give good feedback and if any questions he well respond as quick as it can be. Great options on homework and its like not easy but not too hard either
I took professor Hatton for Drawing 1 online. Amazing professor, he's very patient and finds the good in everyone's work regardless if you already know how to draw or not. Constructive and positive feedback always, never makes you feel bad. I do feel like I came out of his class a better artist and it was a lot of fun trying out new drawing media.
He is a really good teacher who genuinely cares about your growth as an artist.
I took 3D Design with Carlson, and he was a fantastic professor. He was a "choose of your challenge" kind of guy, where he introduced the general topic and techniques and then would help us hone our projects, and I feel that anyone who gave the class effort and consideration received a good grade.
Very easy to fall behind in this class if you don't do your assignments weekly. Incredibly lenient with grading and deadlines. Gives good feedback. Lectures are unlisted on youtube. Easy to reach through email. I spent
Professor Hatton is an effective teacher and communicator of ideas with a very chill vibe. Direct and encouraging, he appreciates participation and class interaction. His feedback to the assignments are sincere, kind and thoughtful regardless the level of expertise. He is very aware of individual strengths and promotes reaching even further.
You will learn so much in this class as well as having fun. Experiencing different tools and material for drawing. He let you explore and experience drawing. He is not dictating what to do and what not to do. If you submit your assignments you will get good grades. he always help you. I really enjoyed my time in this class
If I didn't slack off , it would've been an easy A. I love Professor Hatton, such an amazing person and caring. He is so nice and enjoyed his lectures. Gives you lots of time to finish your work and offers extra credit. Take him you won't regret it.
Supportive, insightful teaching by a talented artist.
A really nice guy and a good teacher. I took a 6-week class with him which was really fast compared to 16 weeks. It was challenging to keep up with assignments. I definitely learned a lot though, and the experience pushed me to be a better artist. He's very understanding about late work as well, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Hatton is a great professor. He tries to open you up to as many different ways of creating as he can. I really enjoyed every assignment and I would take his class over and over. He's also very understanding and will give you a good grade as long as he sees that you're trying and putting effort in. Highly recommend!
Hatton is simply the best! he's very talented in his own right and gives great feedback take him you won't regret it.
I took Professor Hatton during the winter semester and it was very manageable. I took another class alongside, have a job, and had many setbacks in my personal life that would have affected my grades if it weren't for this class being so forgiving. I learned a lot and everything we did was super useful. You just have to put in the effort:)
Carlson Hatton was very kind and deals with students without condescension. He is a great artist and organized his class well. He seems to love drawing and is a relaxed person. He gives personal attention and roots for you to succeed.
Professor Hatton was a fun class to take. I took his hybrid class in fall and work part time so I'd miss class sometimes or would pass a few things late. He was understanding and gave quite a bit of homework but if you enjoy drawing then it should be easy for you. It is quite a time consuming class but overall fun.
I think he is trying to be fair and is lenient with due dates but proper due dates are rushed with lots of extras critics on the side and takes a long time to grade
No idea where the harsh ratings are from, Professor is pretty chill and open-minded about the direction you want to take your work. There are a lot of weekly assignments that you can fall behind on, but he takes late work which is awesome, I think he just wants you to understand the medium. I really enjoyed the class, just communicate with him.
He provides constructive feedback that helps improve your skills. I have taken other online art classes, he was the only Professor who demonstrated how to access assignments with mediums, rather than simply sharing YouTube videos. He is also very understanding and accepting late work without affecting score. I have learned a lot through his class.
I don't speak or understand English very well, but Professor Hatton was understanding. He was also patient with students. I liked that he gave good feedback so I can learn to draw better.
He is good teacher. He is organize and clear. I didn't know to draw before this class, and now I'm not afraid to try, he give me confidence, by telling me to continue trying even I didn't like the result, that is the way I learn a lot. I learn different techniques like ink, charcoal, pencil,.Take any of his classes you will not regretted.
I wasn't so bad at drawing till taking the class. By the end of the semester, I am very amazed by how very interesting and fascinating the activity is. He gave students very good and helpful feedback to let assignments be improved. If you're not confident in drawing and familiar with it, you should take the class.
Professor Hatton, is an amazing professor. What I like about him was that he was honest, when seeing out art work and process he wouldn't sugarcoat it but rather tell us what can be better. I would recommend his class very amazing.
Mr. Hatton was amazing! He is very kind and understanding and gives amazing feedback for your art, with the help of your classmates. He created a calm, safe learning environment that was supportive and relaxed for the entire class. His introduction to soft pastels, stencils, airbrush, and spray paint was innovative and fun. Recommend 100%
Excellent professor. Professor Hatton is very clear with instruction and has amazing drawing skills to support his teaching abilities.
Excellent Professor with knowledge and skills above and beyond
Carlson Hatton is a tremendous artist and teacher. He is also reasonable and caring. Excellent classes!
A lovely human and a great experience overall! Very kind with critique, and overall a caring, creative environment. His class has helped me be more confident with my art :) he holds weekly optional zooms for feedback that are available as recordings to watch later and understand the weekly tasks. Thanks Professor Hatton! Spring 2024
Prof. Hatton is AMAZING!! In taking my first ever art class, I improved and learned so much. He treats his students with immense respect, patience, and kindness, while also giving very helpful and detailed feedback. I probably was the least technically-skilled in my class but he always makes everyone feel worth it :)
Oh my...I have never met a professor like Professor Hatton; He's so encouraging and accommodating with painting classes, especially because I started painting this year outside of my last school. He's so patient and honestly I couldn't ask anything more. He's so good, I ONLY want to take him for intermediate class! Highly Recommended!
Perfect for first time drawing students as well as more advanced artists. The course was balanced with providing technical and mechanical information needed for learning and improving, while also providing open and creative projects to explore.
I love Prof. He has made me want to take more art classes. He is so swee
Professor Hatton is a caring instructor who provides great feedback to help you improve your art skills. The class can be challenging, but with Unstuck AI and other resources, you'll do well.
Love this Prof. He has made me want to take more art classes. He is so caring and supportive. We learn really amazing technical skills in this class and everyone definitely becomes a better artist. One of the best teachers ever.
This professor is super sweet and caring, but I wouldn't recommend taking his class if you're not an art major. He's very picky and expects a lot from you.
Not an art major, but mainly took this class for fun. He gives good feedback and isn't too picky with the assignments as long as it shows that you tried and put effort into the assignment. Even if you are falling behind a little bit he gives extra credit to make up those points.
I remember Carlson to be a caring and kind teacher who was helpful. I did find his class difficult and time consuming but that is what it takes to grow as an artist. I would recommend his classes.
Mr. Hatton is a great art teacher, that help you think out off the box when come to the assignments. he gives feedback to better you work and shows what you can improve on. its a fun class and i would take it again.
Love Professor Hatton, He is caring, inspirational, and he is always available to help when needed. Answers emails quickly. Wish he taught all of the art classes. You will be painting a lot in his class.
