He is so interesting cuz he shares stuff about himself and his work as a psychologist. He is sometimes to strict about details
We learned nothing the entire semester that I had him. We just listened to him talk about his life and NEWSTART and JPC. I was extremely disappointed on the content of the class. But he was approachable outside of the classroom.Had us do evals couple of weeks into smstr and than changed style completely. Avoid if possible!
He's the best professor at Gav, no doubt. His classes are not easy, but that's why he's so great. They will challenge and actually prepare you for university classes, unlike all the other classes I've taken at Gav. You will learn a lot and laugh in the process, as he shares funny anecdotes with the class.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Does not lecture about Psych but on trying to press his religion onto you. It is still possible to pass the class if you study on your own because the "NEWSTART" he spends the ENTIRE class time talking about is not on the tests! If Psych is your passion, take it with someone else or transfer to another college, you'll learn more!
He was very interesting to listen to, but could elaborate more on text material. His tests were challenging, a combination of essay, true and false, and multiple choice. If you memorize everything, you'll do fine. He prepares you well for university tests.
ok so this guy was like pearly whites. he talked and talked.. he was kinda funny at times but then again when it came to turning in assignments hes a stiffler.. he will deduct and deduct points as much as he can. aldo the his research paper sucks you get all stressed out for nothing. more than half the class failed that thing.. omg.. so run as fast
Prof Oler is a good instructor but is very petty when it comes to grading, make sure if you have two CTQ's due on one day that you staple them together or he will give you zero's on all of them just because you did not staple them! 20 page research paper has to exact if you do not collect all 7 empirical articles be prepared to be fail his class!!
Tough professor, but wants you to learn and be structured and organized. Tough grader, never bends the rules or gives the benefit of the doubt. Interesting subject matter, but would have learned more had I not been so preoccupied with following the unimportant details like stapling papers together or how to head my paper just right.
a very nice guy and crystal clear with directions. brags a lot about himself though. don't take his class if you are bad with attendance or lazy. every single one of his assignments count and he deducts points for ANY small thing you did wrong. he teaches very well and wants to help us improve our procrastination.
Oler is a fantastic lecturer and you will learn a lot. That being said, his grading is absolutely ridiculous. He refuses to give any credit to the content of your writing unless you follow very specific formatting rules. It is very difficult to really understand what those rules are. Don't plan on acing this class.
Be EARLY to class and NEVER late! Turn in all assignments in early if you can. Follow his precise rules! The research paper is tough, but he is training you for college level. His tests are NOT hard exept if you are not great with essay questions. He will tell you what is on he test during lecture time. Funny and intellegent!
He needs to us the same etiquette, and language in class that he uses in the STUDIO.
He is really interesting and funny, but his grading methods suck! He does not grade fairly at all How is it that out of all his classes together 85% of the kids fail Is that really our fault or is it his? He grade unreasonable and takes away points for stupid things i would not recommend taking this class with him. take it with a different teacher.
You'll get A or B if you do exactly what he says, memorize notes & lectures & re-read syllabus daily. bad grade if u struggle w/tardiness/attendance & attention to detail. Spends too much lecture time on personal beliefs. Gives good stories of actual psychology patients. Gets a little gross & liberal w/details that leave u going "TMI man".
At first this class seemed to be like it would be really interesting and you would learn a lot...the first day...from then on out its this and that about ex girl friends,he preaches his religion and veganism non stop and makes you feel belittled if your not.very cocky and self absorbed!and forget the term ppr theres nothing good enough for that guy
Dr.Oler is one in a million! His class is very interesting and insightful. I looked forward to going to class. ATTENDANCE is a must! Your attendance could make the difference in your grade. Never be late and don't miss class. He makes everything clear about what he wants. When he tell you to do something, DO IT! The syllabus is your best friend.
I felt that he talked mostly about his own life that had nothing to do with the subject matter. It seemed like he was trying too hard to impress the women in the room and sometimes would go overboard with comments like " girl toys". I wouldn't recommend his class if you really want to learn about psychology.
He is very particular. If it is not done his way it is not done right. His tests are not too difficult but you have to know exact definitions. He gives a 12 page research paper and you have to do it his way. Empirical research. APA format. Pretty much, do it his way and youll be ok.
Good teacher with an interesting class. I usually was never bored. Some homework is required. The research paper is the most difficult of everything in the class. Etra points rewarded for attending class, not being late and turning in assignments early.
Amazing teacher. Most people who 'hate' his class are just those who procrastinate too much.
He spends most of the class time talking about himself and his beliefs. He talks about how students can't afford his $250 fee to see him or his many ex girlfriends. Though most of his stories relate to the topic being lectured. He is also very precise with rules and will knock off points for every little thing. Know the notes and syllabus.
everday i learned something new so it wasnt boring. Follow his instructions on the Research Paper i warn you if u dont he'll dock off points. Show up to every class lecture & on time!!! bcuz end of the semster he'll give you a boost grade for that. His exams are easy if u just remember the notes word to word you'll be fine.
Just ?Know The Notes!? He's challenging and lectures can be uncomfortable at times, but you will go away thinking about what was said. It has an impact on your life.Sit in the front row, DON'T Procrastinate the research paper,do CTQ's & it's an easy pass.Several of us are actually sad that class is ending,(that says something). Thank you, Dr. Oler!
The man professes opinions as fact, perpetuates stereotypes & archaic statements that I find demeaning to women and minorities. He uses the class as a pulpit for his vision of the world-christian values, veganism, and himself. As an adult,I am insulted and fear for the young minds entrusted to him.But then,I've only had 3 classes.
Dr. Oler is a very intelligent man. He says what he means and he means what he says. KNOW THE NOTES!!! DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!!! If you don't do those, than you will pass the class with flying colors. He lectures a lot about his personal experiences and beliefs. Class is way better than any other classes I've taken. DO THE ASSIGNMENTS!
A lot of work required. Critical thinking questions once a week and a 12 page research paper for both Psych 1A and 1B. Great teacher. Knows what he is talking about from personal experience. Classes are very interesting. Definitely recommend him. (Talks a lot about meat being bad for you and health such as obesity.)
Great guy and taught many lessons i will use in my life and gave advice to tell friends and mimed throughout the semester. Overall a great guy.
He is an amazing teacher. He challenges the class, and he is not always popular for it. He makes the class a challenge, because if it were easy anyone would do it. He motivated me to choose Psychology as my area of study.
He knows his stuff. And really cares about his students succeeding. If you wan to learn a lot about yourself and life, take this man.
I feel sorry for any student who takes Psych and doesn't get Dr. Oler. I absolutely loved his class and always looked forward to going. I learned so much about myself and how I want to grow and become as a person. His lectures are engaging and unforgettable. Unlike all my other courses,I was sad when this class ended. You won't regret this class
He spends the majority of class time talking about his beliefs and why they are right. It is a shame I was always interested in Psychology but one class with him quickly ruined it. He also, has this irrepressible need to brag, whether about how much he makes, his past conquests, or his looks.
He's super interesting, always intertaining, but you must do word for word what he says on exams. Don't miss any days or be late cause he'll give you half a grade boost at the end of the semester. Overall he's good. Just don't take it if you're not serious. He has a ten page essay he assigns. That will make or break you.
Follow Instructions
Don't expect to recieve an A in this class. He mostly talks about his life in class, and preeches about living to eat vegetarian food.He tells everyone you'll never be as good as him.You have to KNOW THE NOTES to pass any exam.Don't expect to pass the research paper, nothings good enough or he always finds something wrong.AVOID THIS CLASS IF POSSIBLE!
Dr O in the studio!Dr Oler is the best instructor I have ever had Hands down! He isn't hard but expects you to do the work AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.He does give a lot of personal experience & talks about his lifestyle but he's just trying to get us to think about how we are living.#1 key to success: DON'T PROCRASTINATE!
The only reason this class is not graded a 5 on easiness, is because it is very difficult to attain a satisfactory grade on the term paper, otherwise the class is very easy. He could not make it clearer what needs to be done to suceed in his class, it is as simple as following instructions. He tells you, word for word, what the exam will cover.

First 2 weeks was mostly giving his students life lessons about relationships & having healthy habits. He talks a lot about himself and being black back in the day. As a person he's interesting & entertaining but he is horrible as a teacher. He reads off notes & is harsh on grading. Follow instructions to a T or he wont even grade your work. Anal.
Avoid if possible. Spends majority of his time preaching about how hard it was to be black when he was in school. Do not expect to get an A, instructions must be followed precisely. I had thought I did, but there was a slight clarity issue on the syllabus which caused me to forfeit my right to do the term paper and therefore pass the class.
Do not expect or even hope to get an A in this class because you will be very disappointed. Here's what you need to know about him: he is very self centered and egotistical. For a psychology teacher he has a lot of personality issues. The class might as well be called "'True' Stories About Dr. Oler's Life 101" because that is all you will learn.
Dr.Oler is a good professor. His lectures were interesting. His class is not easy but if you follow the instructions you should be fine. His tests are really easy if you're good at memorizing. He does talk a lot about himself. You will get a good grade on the paper if you just follow the instructions.
Dr Oler is a great instructor. He is straightforward with what will be on the test and everything he tells you to write down. DO IT! Only hard thing for me was the 10pg paper but, I started early on it and even turned it in early resulting in extra credit and getting an A on it! He makes class fun.
He is extremely helpful. Sincerely cares about his students. Tells you what to study so do it! Does amazing lectures and is an excellent instructor. Not a by the book intructor, more like he makes you understand relating it to life. Hard 10-12 page paper but if you start early and follow model you will do great. Totally recommend him!!!!
AMAZING CLASS!! one of the few classes in which I was sad when it ended. Lectures are very interesting. keeps the class engaged. He can be a strict teacher and tough grader but he is very specific about what he wants and what he expects. Students who do not listen or cant follow directions, don't take his class ! Great inspiring teacher.
GREAT. GREAT TEACHER. class is interesting every day. yes he does lecture a lot on relationships and cares for his students and some may not like this but I think if anyone wants to be a future psychologist, they should have there personal life in line first !!! follow syllabus carefully. listen. do your work.
I don't know how anyone could ever call this man a "monster". He is the most loving, helpful and informative professor I have ever met. As long as you KNOW THE NOTES and do the CTQ'S you'l get a good great :) I seriously love this professor, I am going to be sad when I am no longer taking his class next semester.
Best instructor ever! Just do what you are told and it will be an easy A. His lectures are very clear and only gives you the notes that are going to be on exams! Cool right?! Just know the notes .
has a great teaching style, but not easy by any means. he means what he says, you cannot turn in late assignments! he doesn't accept excuses. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT. if you do exactly what he says (write the key vocab on 3x5 & study them religiously!) you'll do perfectly well in this class. He's a great teacher for gav and makes you work!
Know the notes, know the notes, know the notes! He will tell you what's in the test, literally. Professor Oler changed my entire way of seeing, and approaching life. He is by far the only teacher that has shown that he deeply cares about his students. We need more Dr. Oler's in this world. Syllabua is your map to success in this course.
I really enjoyed his lectures. Some say he talks about himself too much. He has so much knowledge to share and really turns both of his Psych classes into lessons you can apply in real life. He basically gives you all the answers to his tests in lecture, so DON'T miss lecture and tests are easy. Research paper is brutal but he says what he wants.
Awesome instructor!! Changed my life. Just know the notes and do exactly what the syllabus says and you will pass his class.
Dr Oler is awesome. I took him for PSYC 10 and 11 (or 1A and 1B)& he is one of the best teachers ever. The research paper is hard, but he lays out everything he wants in the rubric and if you follow it you'll do great. You need to know your notes & the vocabulary definitions WORD FOR WORD. Go to class every day, you won't regret this opportunity.
Great teacher. Everyone says this class is hard, but if you show up for class, and do all the CTQ's, you'll be fine. Perfect attendance gets a half grade boost at the end of the semester. Know the notes. (THE TESTS ARE EASY IF YOU KNOW THE NOTES.) He tells you exactly what to write down. Don't procrastinate on the research paper!
Oler was a good teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. However, the fact that he calls out his students on their "mental illness" issues is ethically questionable. He points out that he will not be your therapist, but takes pleasure in knowing all "disorders" you may or may not have. You can trick him on this by wincing or avoiding eye contact
He is a great teacher. Don't regret taking his class. Teaches you how to see life in a positive way and how to be a student.
His class is not easy, it's simple. Read, learn, and breathe the syllabus and you will get a great grade and ALS (Actually Learn Something). I have to admit, the first couple weeks I was contemplating dropping but I stuck with it and got a great grade. Show up to every class, do all the extra credit, do the research paper and you will be fine!
Dr. Oler's class is one of the toughest classes at Gavilan, and he pushes his students to do much more than what they want to do. HOWEVER, Dr. Oler does this out of the kindness of his heart because he believes in each and everyone of his students. He sees vast potential in them and he makes it so they can start to see their true potential.
I have to say Oler is one of the most inspirational professors at Gavilan. Although, this class is tough, make sure you do EVERY assignment and DO EXTRA CREDIT if given. You'll learn the hard way if you procrastinate. Even though it was a challenge and didin't pass, He left an impact. He's very intellectual and inspiring.
the best teacher I've ever had. fair warning he does assign a 10-12 page research paper- but prepares you for it, gives you plenty of time to complete it, and expects it to be turned in on time or early. He loves his students and wants nothing but to see them succeed. absolutely amazing. i've never had a teacher that cares as much as him.
The only reason Dr. Oler's class would be hard is if you are lazy. He is very clear about his expectations. Lectures are hilarious and helpful, HW makes you apply psych concepts, tests aren't too bad, research paper is the hardest part, but if you do EVERYTHING to his specification and put some effort into it, you'll do great. The best class.
The class itself was not easy, but if you follow his instructions, you will pass with a high grade! Must know word for word definitions for tests, and don't procrastinate with the research paper! This class was life changing for me. Work hard and you will be rewarded for it!
I enjoyed his class and I learned a lot. As long as you follow his guidelines to a T, you'll pass. The only hard part was the paper, but he makes it so clear!
Great Teacher
Fantastic teacher, gives you all the information you need to pass both exams during his lectures, just up to you to know the information word-for-word. I look forward to taking more advanced courses under him.
Psych 10, Great class
He is a great instructor i would definitely take another class with him. he is very informative, his lectures are never boring. He is hilarious and cares for his students.
Carlton Oler is the best professor at Gav, hands down. Although his class is not an easy A, passing is totally do-able. He gives clear cut examples of essays, homework and even test questions. Fairly easy workload, all you have to do is show up. Participate in class and sit in the front. Perfect attendance gets you a half grade boost!
Really great professor. He can be tough but as long as you try you'll be good. He does the best to make you pass and makes the material easy to understand and relate to.
Dr. Oler was an tough but he is clear with what he expects from his students. He is a great professor, and what you learn in his class will help you academically and in your personal life.
Hands down best professor I've ever had! His lectures are always hilarious, inspiring, and meaningful. You can tell he shares experiences to reach students and guide them into a better way of living. The work is not hard but he is very specific about what he wants. As long as you listen, study, and do what is asked you will do just fine!
Dr. Oler isn't your average professor. Being in his lectures reads like a church sermon and he is very unconventional and specific. Take his research paper seriously and DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. This man will change you for the better if you let him. He is unorthodox but effective, so just follow his detailed instructions and you will be fine.
Dr. Oler is one of a kind. His lectures are eye opening, however very raw and unfiltered. If you are sensitive, don't take his class. If you're not ready to work hard, don't take his class. This is a very easy class if you memorize the notes and put in at least 90% effort. I wish I could take the class again! It was great.
He was an amazing professor. Don't skip class and don't procrastinate. Go in with an open mind and learn all you can :) I would def. take him again
Life changing instructor, like all other Psychology classes it seem very personal. Dr. Oler is very straight forward and is not afraid to state what's on his mind. don't be offended. Not an easy A class. He is very clear and specific on what he want but also gives you all the tools to do well.
Great Prof! Makes the subject easier to understand by connecting his lessons to real life experiences. He's quite a character too, very honest and uncensored in his lectures but cares a lot about his students and their success. You'll learn a lot in his class and will do well as long as you pay attention and do the work.
Extremely concise. Very few assignments (Take home questions, tests and specific HEAVY research paper). The research paper was so hard that he took it out of psych 10. If you don't turn it in YOU WILL FAIL. He makes the instructions so clear it's hard to fail. FOLLOW THE SYLLABUS! It will be your bible for the next 16 weeks.
i enjoyed his class over all... if you keep up with the assignments you will do good in class.... the exams are exactly what he lectures. word by word he tells you which will be on exam and it is. so memorizing that wont be has hard.... he is very funny and inspired me to change my life style around. i would totally take his class all over again.
Realest dude ever
Dr. Oler is truly amazing! He is very caring and kind and straight up hilarious. I looked forward to his class everyday. Tip: for his tests just memorize all your notes word by word and you will be okay
Dr. Oler, will change your life for sure! I highly recommend his class, he will speak life into you and will make you a better student if you are willing to take his advice! From my personal experience I recommend taking his class. Dr. Oler gives you the blue print in how to pass his class and how to succeed in life! Blessing Dr. Oler!
Oler is a "once in a lifetime" professor everyone should take. He definitely keeps everything real and stands by his opinions. The only thing is the tests are basically the lecture slide notes in class. One must memorize their notes word for word to do well on the exams. He advises to read the text, but it honestly won't help one do much better.
Dr. Oler is one of those "once in a lifetime" professors. The minute you walk in and sit, he'll tell you to walk out if you procrastinate, a tip, DON'T DO IT! Overall, he is an excellent educator, very well organized, and has some great stories. If you follow all his guidelines, take his advice, and show up to class, you'll succeed. I guarantee it.
Great teacher, would definitely take him again. Tests are relatively easy if you read the book and study the notes, especially the notes. Very inspirational speaker, good sense of humor too.
Very inspirational teacher. I can even say that he has changed my life and inspired me to become a psychologist myself. I am very grateful to have had him as an instructor.
You wont go wrong by taking Dr. Olers class. Not only is he the funniest teacher at Gav, but he cares so much about you and your individual lives when he really doesnt have to. You should aim to get perfect attendance because he gives a half grade boost at the end of the semester. Dont miss assignments. He will make you work for a passing grade
He is a great instructor and he will change your life if you permit it. You will learn plenty and the class is well organized. You will easily pass with an A if you just study what he tells you too.
Unorthodox, but effective! Read the book, but better yet... KNOW THE NOTES!!!!! This is the key to being successful in this class. Participate regularly. ASL!
Get ready for a check up from the neck up! Dr. Oler is one of those teachers youll remember for the rest of your life. He cares about his students like his own kids. Hes a great speaker and has interesting stories for days. Gav is lucky to have him. Pay attention when he says to write something down!
KNOW THE NOTES. Exams are super easy and short as long as you have all the notes memorized. Not very many notes either, he tells you exactly what to right down for the notes. mostly definitions. Great great teacher. very motivating and funny. you won't regret taking this class
Dr. Oler was a great teacher, he kept the class engaged and is very funny. Tests are easy if you memorize the notes word for word. I really enjoyed taking his class however he does inject too much of his personal beliefs. Every class he talked about god ,religion and veganism and he seems to think his opinions on varying subjects are facts.
Dr. Older is an amazing professor! His lectures are interesting and his stories are hilarious. Hes a professor that genuinely cares about his students. The notes are specific and short. As long as you study what he tells you the tests are easy. He gives a half a grade boost for perfect attendance so dont miss class. I wish I could take him again
Avoid this Professor at all costs. Self absorbed, cocky, and speaks in such a condescending tone it will make you cringe and loathe the fact that you're there. He also never used the book in the 4 weeks I was with him before I dropped the class. If you really want to learn psychology, seek another professor. Completely avoid this professor!
Ive been in Dr. Olers class for only 5 weeks so far, but he has already made such an impact on my life. He gives you the inspiration to make a change in your life because he genuinely cares about you. He gives great lectures by including great stories and great jokes. The best professor Ive ever had.
Dr. Oler is crystal clear about what is expected and offers great life advice. However, do not take this class if you are a non-traditional student. Will constantly remind you community college is not "real college", does not grant extensions under any circumstances, and will drop you if your absences + missed work totals an amount of three times.
His lectures are always so interesting and motivational and he is an excellent professor. The best professor Ive ever had even if he dropped me from his class for not showing up to the exam :v
Carlton Oler is a professor that I will never forget. He was such an inspiration and his lectures were so intriguing. There are a few tests and an essay but other than that light homework
DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I very much enjoyed professors Oler's class. He is funny and engaging. He teaches from personal experience rather than just regurgetating information from a text book. He says what he means and means what he says. Studying is vital for success in his class. But I recommend for anyone interested in a fun introdruction and perspective on phsycology.
He rambles a lot but gives notes. wants all students to succeed. his voice is hard to understand and isn't always clear. can definitely zone out in the class, other than when he puts slides up. he is pretty easy, as long as you know the notes
He is a great Professor, he rambles often but is easy to understand while lecturing. He also tells a lot of personal stories so it's hard to keep up at some points. Best advice is to KNOW THE NOTES for the tests he gives, pay attention in class ect...
He doesn't fail students but has only had 3 lesson plans prepared the whole sem. Doesn't teach the material, doesn't respect your time. Nice person & has lots of experience to share. Would be great as a mentor but not a professor. I feel bad, but if you have the option for a diff prof take them. Most of his class is like a sermon not academic.
Great with good stories, but ok teacher. Had health and technology trouble that set back lectures, which were unorganized and didn't have much content. Was clear about what to study from the lectures for tests, which are insanely forgiving. It was frustrating not being able to learn much from course content.Big shame that the class was mean to him.
