Good guy, can tell he's smart. That being said, marketing should be easy... Not with him. Final was rediculous. Grades way to hard. Quizzes every week instead of tests but beware they are difficult. Has his perks but overall very hard to get an A or B. I would definitely not take him again. Grading is not fair on some assignments.
Avoid this guy! He's new to teaching and is still trying to figure out how to do it. You end up teaching yourself and still do not do well on quizes. Very rude, but that would be an aside if I felt like I learned anything in his class. I was very disappointed because I actually wanted to learn about marketing, but I don't think I learned much.
Nothing is clear in this class with this professor. You are stuck trying to guess what it is he wants and if you ask him to clarify, he doesn't have an answer. I had an A throughout the entire course, then ended with a B- because the final was ridiculously hard where only 10% of the material we learned in class was on it. AVOID!!!
this professor gets it. he is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. he applies the material to real world situations and gives great examples of how he has used it in his past jobs/businesses. awesome professor, awesome class. i highly recommend him
Just because he has real life experience in the field of marketing does not mean that he can teach. Do not take this teacher. Grading is ridiculous, impossible to get an A or B.
If you're looking to actually learn something about marketing, take his class. O'neal is energetic, hilarious, and an industry professional who knows the content like the back of his hand. Quizzes once a week on the reading can be real annoying but everything else is pretty easy and doable. TAKE IT!
I absolutely loved this class! It was so interesting and Professor O'Neal made it awesome!! There are quizzes over one (and sometimes 2) chapters every week but NO TESTS until the final! Its so worth it! He is one of my favorite teachers in college... definitely take him!
Professor remindes me of a used car salesman. His "genuine" attitude comes off fake and sleazy. I had an A in the class, failed the final, and puleld out with a B. He refrences his wealth often and its really annoying.
Marketing 300 is a terrible class with a terrible book. O'Neal doesn't make it much better. His lectures are unstructured. Weekly quizzes that are randomly generated and generally pointless. Attendance is mandatory. Otherwise, he is a nice guy with a sense of humor and a lot of experience. Take his class if you have to, but don't expect much.
Quizzes are once a week and they are really hard. There are no midterms, just the final. You have to present a tweet and a case (he grades those pretty easily). The final is ok. Depends if you want to take midterms or not - that might help your grade and or make it worse.
Professor O'Neal is a very nice guy and was very accommodating of scheduling, late assignments, etc. Quizzes were straightforward, if you did the reading. Projects make up most of the grade and are pretty simple. Only real drawback to the class was the 'Real World Selling' project which was poorly setup and caused me to miss out on a lot of points
He's nice and all that, but he's very unorganized. Most of the time students did not have a clear idea of what we were supposed to do for presentations or negotiations. Likes people who are outgoing and participate. Upside, class is EASY, a couple presentations and quiz's, thats it. Even with the bad aspects of class I would take him again.
Prof. O'Neal is quite possibly the worst professor I have had at USD so far. He is very unclear about what he expects, is an unfair grader, and even though the subject material is painfully easy, he makes it hard to pass. I once waited outside his office for an hour when he said he would be there, and he was not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He was the worst professor I had, he wasn't clear in what he wanted students to do, offered very little assistance and guidance, his simulation was a huge waste of time and although the material is easy he does a terrible job teaching it. Talks too much about himself, his wealth, his accomplishments which is very distracting and unprofessional.
O'Neal has good experience but he thinks too highly of himself. doesn't teach for us to do well on weekly quizzes (10 q's from a pool of q's about chapter(s)). Loves to make his students look dumb to feel smart. To do well, read every chapter assigned and TALK. Participation points can get you into the A range. Makes me second guess my own major.
Worst professor I have had in a while. He is arrogant and so full of himself. He spends a ton of time wasting class with his personal stories and goes off on tangents all the time. Tons of hw, no direction or feedback. He doesn't even answer direct questions. Get ready to teach yourself. He also grades based on his OPINION of how you did. HORRIBLE!
Carlton is a great professor if you like real world experience. If you want to read out of a book and regurgitate facts you won't like him. He cares about his students and is very helpful in office hours. If you show up to class and participate you will get a good grade. Really funny guy that is also very knowledgeable on the industry. Fav teacher.
O'Neal is very experienced in marketing and the business world. He gives students real life and first-hand examples from the material he teaches and really cares about motivating his students to think outside the box. He gives great lectures, quizzes are challenging but if you study beforehand you will be fine. Easy B if you study.
The course is pretty interesting but it is hard to get an A. Weekly quizzes on the readings with a study sheet. Rarely lectures; goes on long tangents. Most of the class time is utilized doing case study presentations which require 1 participation. Marketing simulation and presentation are another big portion of the class and can hurt your grade.
1 quiz every week, marketing simulation, two individual presentations, 2 marketing plans, and final exam. The exam is a toss up. It's generated out of a test bank and has nothing to do with his lectures. He has interesting stories but they are irrelevant to any graded assignment. You learn nothing in class. His work is hard and grading is unclear.
O'Neal is very experienced in his field. He uses a lot of examples from his past career that motivated me to live up to his success. I felt that creating a relationship with him and asking him questions on a daily basis was very helpful. He expects a lot out of his students but I do think that he cares about them despite what other students say.
Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. If you can avoid taking his marketing class I would. The methods he is teaching are old and outdated. His syllabus is very incomplete and vague. Literally choose any other professor but him.
I really enjoyed his class. Participation truly matters in that class in order for him to care about you. The quizzes are a bit hard but as long as your read you should do fine. There are no tests besides the final, weekly quizzes, a group project that is slightly luck and a presentation. Not easy to get an A but i did learn alot
knowledgeable guy but his his teaching style is poor. lectures only one day out of the week and doesn´t even go over whats on the weekly quizzes (which are all randomized and pulled out a question bank. will not take again.
So you might be freaking out at the beginning of semester with the weekly quizzes everyone fails but don't worry cuz he doesn't grade anything till the end and the average grade was an 87 in our class UNCURVED. You just got take note of what he says in class regarding your presentations. Easy A-. busy work though
This class is quite literally one of the most frustrating courses I have ever taken. You can't miss a single class the entire semester or he docks points, he grades everything as nit-pickily as possible, and MAYBE 6 kids will get an A-/A in his class at the end of the semester. 80% of what makes up your grade you do alone outside class.
ONeal is an interesting guy. The class itself isnt too hard, you just have to make sure to keep on top of all of the little assignments and follow up stuff. Quizzes are taught, he says theyre from the book but you can use a study sheet but it hardly helps. Presentation heavy but if you prepare and follow the rubric you should do well.
I strongly disliked Professor O'Neal. He is unhelpful when seeking help, doesn't answer questions thoroughly, and is inappropriate toward girls. He expects students to know exactly what he's talking about even though he offers minimal guidance especially in the Marketing Plan. The quizzes are a ridiculous waste of time and he admits it. Don't take
I love the professor O'neal as a person. He's an interesting lecturer, he's funny, and he's very knowledgable in what he teaches. With all that said... don't take his class. You will find yourself frustrated halfway through the semester with the structure of the class, the lack of awareness of due dates, and the difficulty of assignments.
O'Neal is a GREAT teacher. He is funny and really good at what he does. He is straight up and there are no second chances. If you slack, he shows no mercy. Aside from that, he is a great professor and I learned so much from being in his class. Definitely be prepared to talk in class for credit. He forces you to step out of your comfort zone!!
Overall this class and this professor were truly disappointing. Carlton Would not recommend taking this professor unless its a last resort to get the course done.
He is a good guy and he is very knowledgeable but he is a little arrogant. He loves to hear himself talk and assigns a lot of homework. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere for marketing because he assigns so much work and his weekly quizzes are very difficult and a major part of the grade. Again good guy but don't take his class!
Outdated teaching style. Quizzes are imposible. I spend the same amount of time studying for quizzes as I would for another midterm and I still don't score well. He repeats a lot of what he says. Harsh grader.
Professor O'Neal is very smart, but I don't think he is a good professor. He never answers questions directly, especially in regards to big projects and how they are graded. He always expects you to just figure it out and will go around a question and move on without ever answering the question.
Professor O'Neal is very experienced and has lots of stories to share which makes the class entertaining. However, content from class isn't relevant to weekly quizzes or final exam. The class requires a ton of work outside of class and expectations aren't clear. Not as bad as some of the reviews say, but tough to get a good grade.
Students must spend hours studying for quizzes each week that are randomly generated from textbook and excessively difficult. Professor lectures on info that is irrelevant to quizzes and does not use class time wisely. There is also a group project that is highly time consuming with unclear expectations. O'Neal is a funny guy but do not take him!
quizzes are randomly generated questions and you really have no way of preparing for them besides reading the book in extensive detail. So much work towards the end of the semester, multiple projects going on at the same time, unclear instructions, harsh grader. unless you absolutely love marketing I would not take him.
Does not go into detail for group projects and assignments and is an extremely tough grader. Expects you to know material as well as grades you as if you already have your degree in marketing. Quiz every week and are randomly selected based on book but are so difficult that cheat sheet does not even help.
Carlton is a great choice for marketing 300, I came into the class worried it would be really hard to get a good grade, but if you put in effort into the marketing simulation and participate every other ish class then its not too bad. I would definitely take him again!
To be honest, the class material wasn't that bad but O'neal was really vague with all his assignments. I don't know about the others but his quizzes were fairly easy because you could bring 1 cheat sheet with you.
Great guy, but not the best professor. Relies mostly on the textbook and you have quizzes every week. You get a page of notes for the quizzes, but the questions are very hard. My class average was around a C- for the quizzes. However, he gives a lot of opportunities for you to succeed in his class in other ways. Grade average in total was a B to B+
O'Neal is a knowledgeable professor in his area and is clearly passionate about marketing. However, his grading structure is complete BS. If you miss more than 2 classes, he gives you a 0% (Out of 20!) for your participation grade. I received a 100 on the final marketing plan and got an A on the final and ended up with a C in the class. Insanity.
TAKE O'NEAL! Yes, you will have to do a lot of reading (weekly textbook reading for quiz - you get front/back cheat sheet) and yes, you will have to put in effort BUT it is worth it. He genuinely cares about you and wants you to do well. Every time I reached out he was more than willing to meet with me to figure everything out. drops 2 lowest quiz
Awful marketing prof. Very obsessed with himself and lectures heavily on material that isn't on the weekly quizzes. Provided no study guides for the quizzes and final while other profs did. Harsh grader. Also was stuck with one semester long group project and was only given two weeks to bust out a 12 page paper. Take ANYONE else if you can
Quite lazy over zoom, Hard weekly book quizzes, group project that takes 2 hours a week to complete on top of reading homework. I hated how he facilitated class discussion. He won't let you move on until you answer very specific questions. Don't recommend especially if its once a week. 12 pg single spaced project at the end which he did not warn us
This class shouldn't be hard, but O'Neal makes it miserable. Weekly quizzes are super unfair (randomly generated from the book and everyones quiz is different), and theres 2 group projects (10 pages of writing single spaced for each one). if you dont participate your grade will suffer immensely. save yourself and take anyone else.
O'Neal thinks he knows everything and comes across as very arrogant. The weekly quizzes can be pretty difficult and have nothing to do with his lectures. There is a semester-long group project with a paper and presentation, as well as a different group paper (10 pages!) He also doesn't keep grades up to date at all, so it is hard to know your grade
Good guy at heart, terrible teacher. Even though hes passionate about marketing, he doesnt necessarily teach. He just plays a recording from the previous class with his camera off, yet still required students to show up during our class time or else half our grade is dropped. Literally. Quizzes suck and the marketing simulation is challenging
Overall not entirely difficult, just be ready to read two textbook chapters a week, word for word and you'll pass the homework and quizzes easy. Lectures are step by step through the chapters so.. lectures aren't very useful, plus he goes on tangents when bringing up examples and loses focus often. Group projects aren't hard, just be sure to meet.
Taking Carlton as been my worst experience at USD so far. Meaningless weekly quizzes that require you to memorize the textbook. 12 page paper with 2 weeks and 0 instruction that is arbitrarily graded. Also played a recorded lecture everyday and turned his camera off, while requiring us to keep ours on and stayed "available" through text chat.
This class has been my least favorite class at USD. If you do not show up to 2 classes, you lose full participation. You are given weekly quizzes based on random knowledge from the textbook and slides that do not help you learn the material. At the end of the semester you are required to write a 12 page paper with a very brief description.
Do not take him. Weekly quizzes that are on random things we did not talk about in lecture, and he talks about whatever he wants in lecture that is not in the textbook.
Previous reviews mention the weekly quizzes. They seem random, but given that they're directly from the book, it just means you NEED to read the chapters for that week, obviously as college students we hardly have time to read 50-60 pages a week for a 10 question quiz Directions for major projects and lectures overall are very vague and not helpful
I started out the semester thinking that O'Neal was kinda narcassistic and I ended it thinking the same way. Most end up doing fine in the class but its because we are scared of him. Probs you will have to take him. Pair it with easy classes for your GPA and sanity.
I can confidently say that Professor O'Neal is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He just showed up to class and pressed play on the video from his previous class. He only cares about himself and really loves to hear himself talk even though he's not funny and it's just nonsense. Quizzes are difficult! Take any other professor.
Be weary of group projects. Even if you are the only person in your group who shows up for class, AT ALL, he will mark you off when they lie on the peer review saying that you didn't do your part. Excuse me, I was the only one here, I did 100% of the work? Best he could say was "I'm sorry". Terrible teacher. He also just records lectures.
I love him as a person, but im ngl his class is WAYY HARD. He is a little confusing with his coursework. 1 pretty hard Quiz a week with 1 page of notes, Marketplace simulation, two 10-15 pg. MKTG plans, final simulation presentation. The last 2 weeks of class are very hard and time consuming. Go to office hours if you are confused.
If you want to get an easy A or are introverted, this is not a good class for you. You need to participate heavily to do well. Weekly quizzes, weekly online assignments, weekly presentations. Quizzes are super hard, grading criteria is confusing. You likely won't know what grade you have or why you got it. Avoid taking this class if you can.
Weekly quizzes that aren't hard if you do the reading (1-2 chapters a week) and prepare adequate notes. The final is tough but he curves the class so it doesn't really matter that much. Very good lectures with some good stories.
He is super egotistical, all he wants to talk about besides the lecture is his life experiences. A lot of the time he will go on a tangent from the lecture and talk about random things that have nothing to do with the material or the course for a matter of fact. Easy class besides the mountain of reading and the 10-12 page paper that he assigns.
Very funny, great energy. Very successful also. Was a VP of marketing, entrepreneur, CEO, and many other professional roles. Class uses a marketing simulation which is kinda confusing and hard to figure out. Gives you multiple opportunities to earn extra credit points and can drop 2 of your lowest quiz grades if you earn enough extra credit points
Not as bad as I expected. He's very enthusiastic. Heavy workload for an intro class, but many different assignments so if you messed up one, you could make it up by doing well on another. Speaking as a more introverted student, participation/engagement is key to getting a good grade. Not my all time favorite class, but certainly not the worst.
Genuinely a very easy class, the workload was better than other courses I have taken, he was very responsive and an overall great teacher!
O''Neal was ok. There is a lot of work for an intro class and he doesn't explain any assignments, projects, deadlines. He only mentions when something is due if a student brings it up in class so be prepared to stalk the syllabus every week. The quiz questions he gives every week are random and the specifics don't relate to his lecture or book.
Its very hard to get a good grade in the weekly quizzes. You'll have to participate a lot in order to get a good grade. Overall a good class, I learned a lot from him and he's truly inspiring. Participate a lot, contribute in your group projects and give importance to the simulation and you'll be good.
Take another professor!! Overload of work, random partners, crams everything in towards the last couple weeks, and goes on tangents awry from the material which will cause you to go over time almost every class!
I took two classes with the professor, Marketing 300 and Marketing 330. Both classes were very informative, and I think I thoroughly enjoyed the classes. Professor O'Neal is friendly and humorous which helps make the lectures pretty great.
About 75% of class is O'Neal rambling about his career, and the other 25% is him focusing on course content that is not in any of the quizzes. He is incredibly condescending to students when approached about issues with grading, and has very poor time management skills. Either take the class with a different professor, or not at all.
He really likes to weave in his personal experience into the course which adds a lot. There is required reading for the quizzes but usually just listening to his lectures and reading the slides is enough to get an A on quizzes. Lots of group projects with random members.
Be prepared to read a lot for this class. Lecture heavy and goes off on tangents EVERY class. Went to his office hours to review my marketing plan segment and he laughed at my writing in my face but still gave me a B... My class was once a week and he ended class early every time which was nice. His class is easy to pass if you put in the work.
Grades papers differently/doesn't give useful feedback. Quizzes are impossible and have nothing to do with lectures. Weekly discussion posts. Harsh criticism on presentations.
He's honestly not that bad... quizzes are easy if you do the reading. The simulation is the worst part since groups are random and your grade is dependent on how you place. He's not very clear about his expectations on papers or presentations and grades pretty hard. As long as you don't get stuck with bad people the class isn't horrible.
If you take this professor be ready for a heavy workload. Never had a professor given so many assignments and presentations. With also weekly quizzes. Mainly uses class time to talk about his work experience rather than material. When he does talk about material, he's all over the place and really hard to follow.
He is a super knowledgeable professor, always intertwining his real experience into lectures. The simulation isn't great if you get paired with people are lazy, so I don't enjoy that part. Other than that, super energetic guy. you get out what you put in, so participate and be interested. It made me take an actual interest in marketing.
Makes the class interesting. Clear direction the course is going. Super passionate, lectures would always go by fast, super experienced in his field and loves teaching. 1 group presentation. 1 solo presentation. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE FINAL ROLE PLAY. FOLLOW THE RUBRIK FOR ASSIGNMENTS
Probably the worst professor I have ever had at USD. Highly recommend avoiding this teacher if you can. Even though we were able to use one page of notes for the quizzes, they were absolutely impossible. Nothing on the quizzes were from the textbook and it was basically a guessing game because he doesn't teach in class either.
I really like Oneal, but don't discount the negative things you've heard. he is poor at time management and the quizzes sucked. I personally averaged a 25/50 on the quizzes, but did really well on everything else and still got an A. He is incredibly knowledgeable and that is what i look for an a professor. You will take something away from him!
Subtly racist and sexist with an inappropriate attitude towards female students. Quizzes are impossible and provides no clear instruction for projects. Incredibly condescending and outright rude. Grade relies on a group project based on pure luck. I got an A but many of my peers did not. Be warned.
The quizzes are pretty tough. Participation and attendance make up a big part of your grade. I missed 4 out of 25 classes and got a 0/100 for professionalism and 100/200 for participation. He also never disclosed that not showing up affects your professionalism score. Just know you're expected to show up every time, no matter what.
Horrible professor. Says out of pocket things and automatically gives you a 75 for participation for missing one class. take-home homework is easy but the exams are tough and not prepared for.
O'Neal was a little intimidating at first, but honestly I grew to really like the class. He has real law experience unlike some of the other professors and has real life examples and stories to tell. He explains things clearly and homework is easy and always due on Sunday. He is an entertaining professor and often lets us go early.
One of my favorite classes at USD. Everyone in the sales class loved him. I think in some of his other classes the reviews seemed mixed but if you're considering him for professional selling its so worth it. Very intelligent and experienced, practically impossible to not get an A because you're graded on a lot of small things.
