Goes out of his way to treat latinos better than everyone else. I passed his class but did not appreciate the bias atmosphere.
Wonderful teacher, fun, knowledgable, and understanding. My favorite ever!
Awesome!
I've taken several of his courses, and I've never felt that he favors students based on their ethnicity. He's helpful and caring, and he's passionate about his subject. I recommend taking any English course with him.
He is cool, and his class is not that hard!
Very hard but very interesting!
He is a good professor. I really enjoyed his creative writing class.
He is teh rox
TEH ROX...0RZ.
In his creative writing he is an easy greader and fun!
really interesting points of view, very intelligent and learned man...pretty easy class
Professor Smith is the best professor I've had at Palomar. Definitely take anything you can with him. If you do the work, make an effort, contribute to discussions, and talk to Mr. Smith, you will succeed. He is more than willing to help with essays and other information about anything. He is extremely intelligent, so just talk to him for fun!
Enjoyed this class very much! Carlton was very helpful and treated everyone with interest and respect. One of the best teachers at Palomar!!!

Prof. Smith is very interested in his students. He will challenge you, but he lets you challenge him just as much, so he's very fair. He is a bit too enamored of pop culture, especially Raymond Carver and Nirvana, but that might be more helpful to newer students.
Awesome teacher, goes over a lot of abstract concepts though, work hard and you will do well
Gives *great* advice and worked hard to help my friend with his story last semester.
Took an Intro to Lit class, especially to study poetry. He read a poem to the class, and that was it for poetry! He's very disorganized, didn't stick with the syllabus, changed deadlines, and used the text for 3 stories and one play. He used an older edition of the Riverside text, so our expensive book was not very useful. Try someone else!
great person, teaches very interesting lessons not only in literature but in life. I enjoyed his class very much.
he is a good teacher but he is very unclear in his topic and**** does he spit out random things. He will be talking about what the assignment is then jumps to star wars. your choice if you are up to the challenge.
Carlton Smith is a very cool teacher. He is very helpful and always lets the class out early. His class didnt even seem like class- he had so many interesting things to talk about. If you need to take English 100, take this class!
Dr. Smith is one of the best teachers at Palomar. He is passionate about writing and his lectures and class discussion are relevant and inspiring, though he does stray off-topic. He is a bit intimidating at first and a little strange(but most brilliant people are). If you take an active interest in the course, he'll be equally willing to help you.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER, so far, mostly because I feel the same as he does about a lot of things. VERY TANGENT, but great conversations. Hard to know what to take notes on, making it difficult to use them to study, so LISTEN, it reeeeeeally helps. He is so passionate and unbias. Laidback, easy going, but don't try to take advatage of him or his class.
probably my favorite teacher at palomar. nice, cool, smart. and to be honest his classes tend to be on the easy side. does go off on tangets, but you can reel him back in. if you want to get on his good side, tell him how much you love the film version of "the hulk". hes a sucker for ang lee.
I don't know how this teacher got his hot status, but that's a lie. His class seems fun at first, but after a couple of class hours of hearing him go off on random tangents, you quickly realize you're not going to get anything out of him. He's very unclear about topics and topic choices make him seem like a space cadet.
Carlton Smith is a great teacher because he is passionate about his subject and he loves his students. He is unorganized, but we were always willing to forgive that because we got a lot of value from the class in spite of it. Plus, it was fun. Plus, everyone in the class was cool, even the couple of old folks in the corner.
I actually dropped his class because he spent so much time talking about things that had nothing to do with writing - I mean most of the time! I just couldn't handle that, that's all. For some reason I wanted to learn. So instead I took ENG 100 (and 205) from Dr. O'Doherty, and never regretted that decision. Man, I love O'Doherty! Woo-hoo!
Hard but interesting; challenging.
I took away a lot of knowledge about writing
he is...interesting... strong advocate of 1960s culture- drugs, sex, rebellion, ken kesey, etc. do not take him if u disagree w/this lifestyle. only 3 essays total, but he is a hard grader. class discussions are fun and all over the map, but he always makes his point. not very organized, but makes it work. show interest, participate, u'll do well.
Amazing teacher. Assigns very interesting books and really engages students. Fun group discussions and not too many essays. I definately reccomend this guy
Talks a lot, but just tryng to get his point across. he is interesting.
in the beginning the class was kind of hard.. but after i asked him what he wanted it got easy. i learned a lot from him, and i know it will carry on in my education. Great teacher, you should take his class. lets you out early sometimes.
He drives a prius, and I despise those things. Yet, there is something about Dr. Smith that is hard to ignore. His teaching style is so abstract, yet so intriguing. I took him for 100 and 202- I found his classes so interesting and memorable! He is a professor I will never forget! TAKE HIS CLASS! He will make you a more analytical person..
He's my favorite teacher at Palomar and you should take Creative Writing with him if you can.
he is a wonderful teacher. he is ver enthusiastic about YOUR learning. he grades tough though. but you can do it if you just go to class
One of the best teachers at Palomar College! I really enjoyed his class. The assignments were simple but they prepared you for the final paper which you had the entire semester to work on. He is so laid back, and he is always willing to help with anything you need help on. I would love to take another class with him!
he's a friendly guy, but wishes he lived in another era - the "beat" generation. i'd say he goes off on tangents, but that would imply that he ever started on a particular topic and stayed there for more than 5 minutes. if you are or want to be a "writer", he'll love you. i learned some new things and was entertained so I guess it's all good.
Carlton Smith is possibly one of the best teachers i've ever had. His style is unique and he is a trove of literary knowledge. Very fun and informative, cares about what he teaches--a big deal for ENG 205
If you are afraid of English, I would strongly recomend Dr. Smith. He is very nice, expects a lot, but gives SO much in return. In addition, he also provides a nearly stress-free way of approaching English, which works SO well for those who may not enjoy this subject. He encourages creativity and is generally just a fantastic person.
Mr. Smith was super cool & made English 100 fun! I'd recommend taking his class!
One of the most enriching and enlightening classes! Professor Smith provided a deep and mind provoking atmosphere. He has a great approach to literature, whether you are a fan or not, his class is extremely insightful.
Carlton Smith is an interesting dude. I really liked the way he structured his class around the 60's. It kept things interesting. He made it a pleasent experience for me to take this class. Nothing really negative to say.
Dr. Smith is an interesting English instructor. If you're not open-minded or into 60's culture you may find yourself bored. Personally I enjoyed the class. He helped make me a stronger writer, with a huge difference in my writing from my first paper to my final. You can get A's from him even if English isn't your subject, but it takes revision!
I loved this class! He is very helpful and expects a lot because you have a writing assignment due every week but it's all very helpful. They are interesting assignments and Mr. Smith is nice enough to help you out if you need it. If you are afraid of English, take this class because he puts you in a stress free environment.
The writing assignments given every week do help. He has accepted late work for partial credit but usually wont give you last weeks assignments if you miss a class. DON'T SKIP CLASS. This is a very intense class but not impossible to pass.
Was a great teacher to have, went off in his own little world sometimes, but he made the class worth going to. Fair grader, you barely use the book in this class. He really tries to get to know the students in his class and relates to them very well.
very good english teacher, smart man, funny and interesting yet very expecting. If you do not like to write or have no desire to become a good writer, take someone else. Class style/subject of the '60s and counter culture was cool, he is a very open Liberal so if you are not, then be prepared...I ignored it and did fine. overall I liked the class
Carlton is a great teacher. Made me laugh. This class was very enjoyable. I am going to take this class with him again, just because I like him as a teacher!!!
Such a nice guy! Very down to earth and treats everyone equally. Love the books that he choose for discussions. They are easy to relate to. It's important to go to class even if you don't have your work done he'll appreciate your honesty and commitment to show up. The only teacher I've ever wrote a review for
best teacher i have ever had really understands students and is very helpful. he loves to talk about sports and all kinds of subjects and he relates everything to real life so you really get it best teacher ever.
He is very intresting. You will be given great advise and will tell you how to improve. Very easy class. only had to write 4 essays
He is a good teacher but he often jumps from one topic to another without finishing. He was helpful and informative. This is just a refresh of basic essay writting so for me it was nothing new. Overall i enjoyed class and recommend him !!!
I had him for Popular English and at first the books were kind of out there but he made them sound really interesting and he sort of guides the conversation he's more interested in the students talking. I would recommend any class he's teaching.
I love this teacher!! He is very interesting to talk to and is pretty laid back. Just make sure to do all the homework and the tests are super easy. We watched a lot of movies and had an hour to do our homework in the computer lab so I hardly had any homework to do outside of class. The longest paper I wrote in his class was only 3 pages.
TAKE DR. SMITH!!! Without a doubt the best and most influential english teach I've ever had. I've always hated writing, but Dr. Smith was able to give me a new perspective. The class is easy, only 3 essays written the whole semester. On top of that he is a VERY FAIR grader. Simple cannon go wrong with this class.
Prof. Smith is awesome! Very easy to talk to, very laid back. Best English teacher I've ever had! He explains things so well, there is no way not to get what he says! You just gotta listen!Make sure you don't miss a class. He won't fail you but you will miss a great lesson that no notes from a classmate can replace.
Professor Smith is one of my absolute favorite teachers of all time. I learned lifetimes from him. What an extraordinary and influential human being. Very rewarding class. There are 3 papers and a few in-class assignments. But you can tell he grades you by your effort. Loved every minute of this class and the people in it.
if you are planning on taking an English class,Prof.Smith is the best English teacher EVER. His lectures are entertaining and he is very straight to the point. he is super laid back and lets you leave class early on most days. i loved his class, i highly recommend.
Absolute favorite professor. He has become my mentor of sorts. I took him for creative writing and everything he said just made me more creative! I still am bummed I never got to take him for Eng 100. Everytime I try he isn't teaching it that semester or he has a full class :(. Need to take him soon. CARLTON ROCKS!!!
Faced with the horrendous task of critiquing and encouraging would be writers of all ages and abilities, he manages to make the class fun and inspiring. You MUST write for the class, many short stories, poetry, and lots of exercises. You will learn and practice and help each other grow in skill. Book needed for portfolio. Great class and teacher!
Such a gem of a professor. This class heavily focuses on the 60's but it's an interesting take on a normal english class and he's really helpful if you're lost. By the end of the semester he was more like a mentor to me than a teacher, and he has some great insight if you need help with transferring.
Flexible with the syllabus, so there's always time to get through the reading. Fun class with a guest lecturer twice. Only 2 short essays. And an inspiring professor that is fun and easy to listen to. Only a couple homework assignments. The tests are not tricky at all. Do the reading, have thoughtful things to say, and the rest will come together.
Kinda nervous coming into class on the first day because I HATE ENGLISH. But Smith really does make english very engaging. Unlike many english teachers, he looks at books AS A STORY and see what makes it so interesting. He draws many comparisons to different stories from movies which is very helpful. If english isn't fun to you then take him.
Carlton hands down the best English teacher I have had! I hated writing and by the end of the semester I know I became a great writer, he's so easy but expects you to follow his tips and feedback. Only wrote 3 essays, final was a 10pg research paper but you have 1 month to work on it and plenty of computer lab time to do it and ask for help.
Very helpful. Laid-back and you will learn how to write. there are three essays. take his class you wont regret it
Three papers, but he is unhelpful when you ask for advice. He will grade lower on papers written on subjects he doesn't like, so write about the assigned books if you want to get an A. He is unclear with his instructions and he mumbles a lot during class. His lectures are irrelevant and unhelpful in class. Hard class/grader, not recommended.
I had him for 3 classes- 135, 136, & 137. As long as you do the work and participate a bit, you'll get a good grade. He gives a lot of leeway because he considers writer to be "artists." Inspiring and knows his craft. One of the coolest teachers I had at Palomar.
The class is normally a community class yet this year it wasn't. Didn't give any test but your grade is made up of the writing you turn in. Not the hardest grader on essays. It was a very easy class. He does not follow the syllabus and we did not use the book. Over all the class is very essay just a lot of writing to do.
I really enjoyed this class! Carlton Smith is a fantastic professor. He is always willing to help with papers and is more than fair with his expectations on papers. He's pretty funny too. I would take his class again any time!
Smith breaks down 5 paragraph essays in a unique way. First you write one paragraph summaries of an article of your choice. Summaries are then applied to your introduction paragraph. Then he teaches you body paragraph "structure." Which is built with a topic sentence, explanation of the topic sentence, personal example, and going back to you idea.
Professor Smith is such a special breed of person: creative and compassionate, and always full of insight. He is so good at getting his students engaged with concepts and ideas that could otherwise scare others away, and never shows anything but respect and appreciation for any questions or requests you may have. Highly recommended.
One of my favorite professors by far here! He is so energetic, young and caring. He relates to everyone in the classroom and brings humanity into learning. He gives minimal work, and what he does give is so easy to finish. Not a tough grader but makes you think, which I loved. Take him if you get the chance you will not regret it!
Smith drones. He doesn't make sense very often, because he mumbles and interrupts his own sentences a lot. He is enthusiastic about the classes he teaches, but having a different opinion will get you interrupted and disrespected. Over-all he is fine to be in a classroom with as long as you don't put too much stock in your teacher's opinion of you.
I've taken Carlton for 3 semesters now, I just sit in on his class at this point cause it's awesome. The class basically becomes a little writing community who will discuss their work in a constructive and non judgemental environment, with a few fun writing exercises thrown in each class. Carlton's funny and he enjoys his students and their work.
Fantastic professor! I would take a class with him again any time. Thoughtful feedback and interesting class discussions.
Carlton is an AWESOME professor! 135/136 is taught differently than his other classes, more laid back but still gives you lots to do. He encourages you to submit your work again and again and is very thorough with feedback on your piece. I don't think I took a single test, just wrote all semester long, and it was things I actually wanted to write!
Prof. Smith loves the study of Native Americans. The book he requires you to purchase is about Native Americans, and you will watch a couple movies on this subject. However, don't misunderstand this to mean that he is flaky! He is not! Everything you do in his class is a building block for writing in preparation of the final exam. Great teacher!
Loved Creative Writing with Carlton. Chillest professor on campus. Talks a lot about his book, not that I minded. (It's a great book.) Brings up super interesting and relevant topics and has you read really good short stories. We watched a few movies too. The portfolios are not as scary as they sound if you keep up with the work. Awesome professor.
Mr. Smith was very caring and understanding. The course was made up of 1 persuasive essay, 1 research, and 1 final paper that was 9 pages. No quizzes or tests. Always let us out early and had short classes.
I found that Professor Smith was very disorganized. It felt like he didn't have a solid plan for the semester. He's not the best at lecturing, but if you go to him and talk one on one, the feedback and help you'll get is very good. Definitely not a professor I would take again, but he's a very nice guy.
I took him for creative writing and he's pretty chill I love him so much . He's so funny and so carefree but answers all questions thoroughly. His work is so easy to complete and gives solid feedback
He went off onto so many tangents that seemed irrelevant to the pieces we had to read. None of the class got to have an input because he was the one always talking. He also was so disorganized and didnt seem like he knew what he was doing. We had a midterm and final.
went on too many tangents on race and diversity and its relevance on culture today.. even though the class was on pre-civil war american literature. he assigned readings but never really went over them in class. he only gave like 4 or 5 actual assignments, two papers, and a midterm/final. i missed two weeks of class and didnt miss anything really
Very scattered, gave us a syllabus and then pretty much didn't follow it. Never posted grades, and we didn't know exactly what we were being graded on (did participation/attendance matter? I still don't know). But he's super cool and gave a lot of good feedback on my writing.
Awesome professor! Very nice and caring and wants to help you succeed! Highly recommend! 4 novels but nothing too long. He likes to talk but encourages you to as well. I would take his class for all English's if I could.
Mr. Smith was my English 100 Professor. The book material needed isn't expensive nor giant. I would 100% recommend taking his class. He's really nice, and very much so approachable. Just do your work the best you can. He understands that you're learning and wont judge you if you have a hard time with English Instead he strives to help everyone. :)
I took the class online and all the assignments were posted with time in advance. I was also not able to purchase the book or textbook because I was out of state but I found the book free online and personally, I did not need the textbook. There are three essays throughout the semester and you get a lot of options for creativity. Highly recommend!
I took this class last semester online, and it was so easy. Some teachers make you do so many extra things, but he was straight to the point. I found the textbook online, and most of the stories' audio can be found online. The lecture is not heavy at all. easy to contact and gives good feedback. I never found the class boring at all, to be honest
ENG 100: Professor Smith is amazing! As long as you do the assigned readings and follow his instructions you should be fine. I love reading and writing, so this class went fairly easy for me. I took this online class in place of my high school English class, and he was willing to help me with assignments and responded to my emails quickly. Awesome!
