Very unclear on assignments and directions. very unorganizied and confusing started off as a great fun class and now has 180ed and turned it into a class everyone dreads going to.
If you can avoid taking his class please do for your own sake. He seemed like a nice guy until mid semester. He is unlear about assignments and gets angry when you ask him to clarify. He also gives very little warning as to when things are due.
This class was a total waste of time and money because of his teaching style. No one respected him. We learned nothing all semester due to irrelevant class discussions, him not controlling the class, and continous shifting of assignments. We actually talked for 30 minutes about mucus. I heard very few speeches for a class called Great Speeches.
He tried to make a worthless class into something, assigned too much homework, too many assignments, etc for the most worthless class I've ever taken. We rarely talked about what we were supposed to. Not THAT hard but he was very unhelpful, condenscending, and unclear.
condescending at times, yes, but you can tell that he's really intelligent. he does make ksu more involved than it should be, but not to the point that A's aren't easy. you can't blame him...the class itself was designed to be worthless.
He's a really good guy and would do very well teaching a class other than KSU, not much to work with there.
Dr. Usher is a funny little man and smart. But its common knowledge that the class is useless and he requires a little too much effort while trying to make it interesting. Every now and then you learn something interesting but there is no pattern. If you can't escape the class though he is a fun guy.
Dr. Usher is a good teacher. He can have a temper sometimes but usually he is very helpful and intersting. He made a very boring class not bad at all. I would deff recomend him as a teacher to have.
He is a really interesting guy and my class was really interesting. I really enjoyed having him as my teacher. He's a fair grader on all that he does. Sometimes he comes off as a little pompous, but I think it's funny. He's really and truly a nice guy and is willing to help anyone however he can.
I didn't really like "Dr. Usher". I understand that people should try to get along and embrace the fact that America is a country of mixed culture, but I do not believe in shoving your beliefs down someone's throat! I don't recommend him!
easy teacher if you dont get on his bad side. he is really passionate about "getting involved" and becoming "smarter" HE is a very educated man with many goals in life. recommended teacher. oh and tests are easy.
Dr. Usher is a wonderful and very educated man. He is very passionate about teaching, and getting his students involved (to call to action). This class is not for slcaker! FIVE STARS!
I like Dr. Usher, and I actually still talk to him occasionally. I certainly didn't see eye to eye with him on a lot of things, but he is very educated and intelligent, and if you conduct yourself like you aren't an idiot, he will reciprocate your respect. The class itself was pretty superfluous, but he did a good job of making it interesting.
Dr. Usher is by far one of my favorite teachers ever. He knows what he's doing but he doesn't know how to portray that through his teaching. Lots of quizzes, hardly any tests. He's a great guy with lots of knowledge. Take his class!
Easy breakdown on if you should take this class or not: if you were an honors student in high school, DON'T! If you are average and easily entertained, you will like him.He is an idiot that invents his own words and forces his views. If he doesn't like you, you will know.. he will tell you he is trying to ignore you in front of the entire class...
A worthless and waste of time class. Too much effort. Mr. Usher is knowledgeable but he can be unclear, scattered and a bit condescending. No class structure. Assignments and deadlines unclear and if you ask for clarification you'll be made to feel inferior. KSU should consider dropping this class as they become a more respected college.
As an honors student and valedictorian for my high school, I found Carlton Usher to be highly open-minded, humorous, and enjoyable. He is probably the nicest professor that I?ve met. It is impossible to not receive an A or B at the end of semester, just as long as you show up for class and complete the assignments. He is also very lenient on test g
Umm... he is very knowledgable about the material yet the course is so scattered that nothing really coincides...he is entertaining and you can use your laptop in class. If you are rude, he will be rude back. He doesn't really answer questions you have because his mind always seems to be somewhere else...
One of the best professors Ive ever had. He makes a very interesting class so you want to come. He will also make sure you have a good grade in the class and will help you out
Great professor. Very intelligent. The class is a joke though. Just do the readings and show that you put some effort into your report.
Underrated.
I have learned a lot from him. The majority of the lessons I have learned from him two years ago I am still following to this day. If you give input during his class, he will make sure you (and your class) is enjoying themselves. I'm still talking to the friends I made in that class because of the interactive projects.
So condescending. I learned nothing in this class. Try to avoid taking this first year class if possible.
Dr. Usher is a bit out there...He is very hard to follow because he never fully finishes a thought, or if he does it's strange. Not very straight forward, not very clear. I am doing well in his class because I make and effort and show up everyday. Also, he likes students who will talk and engage during class discussion. He's not hard just out there
Dr. Usher is an awesome guy, very easy on grading, and willing to help you out whenever it is needed. Attendance isnt mandatory but if you show up youre more likely to get a good grade. Four quizzes, and 2 writing assignments that are easy. I would love to have this guy for every class. top of the line guy!!!! TAKE HIM!
Dr.Usher is extremely helpful in class. He tells you things that don't occur to you and challenges you to look at what you are doing and who sees it. He is funny and treats you like an adult.
SO condescending. doesnt help when you need it. Wont post grades online. very unclear with what needs to be done in class. avoid this professor!!!
Really nice teacher and tries to make class more interesting then just book work and notes. He is very laid back on how you want to take the class, whether you want to have essays, quizzes, multiple choice or short answer. However, he does not very specific on assignments with what he exactly wants you to do. But it was great having him!
Dr.Usher has been my favorite professor at KSU. He did not make us buy the text book but we did have to buy the Justice book. Justice is a big part of the grade in the class. He is an easy grader on papers because he grades on the information presented. I love Dr.Usher. This is the only 8am class that I have actually looked forward to going to.
DO NOT choose him. He is rude, does not give help when asked, and his lectures are completely pointless. He will belittle you IN FRONT of the class with no hesitation. He brags on all of his accomplishments and DOES NOT care for athletes. SO IF YOU ARE AN ATHLETE ESPECIALLY DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR.
Carrolton is a good teacher. But He's very self absorbed, ceaseless bragging about all him and his friends accomplishments. He's very sassy and sometimes condescending. Attendance is a part of your grade but he does not keep proper track of it. He rarely stays on subject, and there's always HW. Too much work for a freshman course.

Easy A! Gives you test questions and quiz before u take them with the answers. Easy! His study guides are the test! But he is very unclear and unprepared for class! But its an easy A!
Fun, creative, clever professor. The syllabus is very clear about how you will be graded in class. He likes to talk about things that matter, he's relevant, but he gets aggravated when a class isn't interactive, and likes for people to participate in class discussions, reasonably so. He's a bit hard of hearing and funny in a quirky way.
Dr. Usher is extremely rude! He is very condescending and self-absorbed. He is constantly bragging on his life accomplishments and does not care about anything you have you say. He is ALWAYS right in his eyes and he always has an attitude.
He says he wants participation and for people to talk, but he will cut you off in a heartbeat and belittle you in front of other students and disagree with your opinion (even though he asks for it). He constantly brags on himself and talks about his constant vacations and how much money he makes. He also does not use d2l.
Constantly asks for participations, he recently said in class "atheists are lazy" and sparked a "debate" so he calls it. Loves to argue with students, speaks constantly about himself, his childhood and his books he's written and his "connections". Easy class though, just follow directions. Doesn't use D2L - uses FaceBook.. weekly posts required
Usher is definitely passionate about the class. If he has nothing left to teach, he will spend the entire class debating about what's going on in the world. Expect homework almost every night. He doesn't use D2L so actively using a Facebook page is mandatory. It seems like a lot of work for a seminar class.
Dr. Usher is amazing! He truly cares about his students and as long as you are willing to put the work in, you will get a good grade! There are only 3 major assignments (one is completion) THE STUDENTS MAKE UP THE SYLLABUS ON THE FIRST DAY! He is very fair when it comes to grading and is flexible on attendance as long as you talk to him first.
Dr. Usher's class was my favorite of the semester. We always discussed interesting stuff and he gives great lectures. There was no assigned textbook, he wanted to save us $. If you do the assigned work then you'll do fine in the class. He's a cool dude, he makes class interesting and will help you out if you need it. I definitely recommend him.
Dr. Usher likes to be the smartest person in the room and he isn't afraid to show it. If you participate in class and don't cross him the class is a breeze. The quizzes are wacky but that doesn't make them hard. The more you are willing to talk to him the more willing he is to give you a good grade. Easy Class!
Wasn't a huge fan of this professor. He is very arrogant and loves to talk himself up, but it's an easy course. If you're on his good side, you'll do fine in the class. Just don't get hurt if he tries to say anything rude towards you. The quizzes are confusing, but honestly, he's not that bad.
Usher has difficulty getting along. He is very pretentious and does not like to listen to opinions of others, even though he claims to and even ASKS for other opinions. If you say something he doesn't like he loves to say "stop playing" and devalues your opinion. Very unclear instructions. Contradicts himself constantly. Too much work for a seminar
Professor Usher is one of the worst professors I've ever come across. He is one of the most rude and arrogant people you'll ever meet. His lectures are never ending, never on topic, and mostly about himself. His assignments are never thoroughly explained, and when asked questions, you're the one belittled and blamed for not knowing, never his fault
He loves to talk about world problems and the main thing he uses the text book for is vocabulary. Nice person to talk to about his class and he loves purple.
He's constantly boasting of how he makes $80k+ a year, how he makes $5k+ per lecture he does, how he "Knows Jay-Z" and all these other famous people. He is not afraid of putting you on blast. If you have a question, he'll quickly refer you to another student. You'll be posting your assignments on Facebook (Word Docs. and PDF's)
I have never disliked or had any problems with professors except for this man. He is genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had. He never stays on topic or follows along with the syllabus. He is VERY opinionated and becomes irritated when you don't share the same opinion as him. He makes the class up as he goes along and rambles.
I hoped to learn a lot from this course, but this professor made it impossible. We never stayed on topic with the syllabus and quiz topics seemed completely random. Used the final to "get back at us" by putting questions he expected us not to know. Not to mention he basically preaches the entire class and is disrespectful towards other opinions.
Worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't stick to syllabus, grading criteria is confusing, homework instructions are not straight forward, and extremely disrespectful to students. Isn't afraid to belittle you in front of everyone for not sharing the same views as him. Rarely stays on topic and spends class talking about himself.
Go to class, do what is asked, & you will get an A. Effort is what is needed. If he isn't clear enough, ask him and ask him again. He will talk to you. A lot of people on here have said he was disrespectful but I never witnessed that once. He does not stick to syllabus or use D2L but if you do the work you'll be fine. Learned a lot and he is great.
He is an awesome guy very approachable
The class followed no agenda, any given day could be him just expressing his opinions, or others an unexpected pop quiz. Did not respond well when others did not simply agree with his opinion or questioned it. The quizzes and tests aren't too bad, considering he actually lets you know what to study.
Dr. Usher isn't the best professor, but I did enjoy his class. It was pretty easy as long as you do the work. DOESNT REQUIRE TEXTBOOK. Most of your work is going to be writing a small paragraph on current events/what we talked about in class & posting it in the Facebook group. He did get mad sometimes if students were disrespectful...
He can be really passionate about his opinion and tends to talk a lot about himself, but overall the class is easy if you do the (easy) work. He tells you 'DON'T buy the textbook' because he knows it's a waste of $. Most of the work is summarizing an article once a week. He does have quizzes but they're in the syllabus & he posts the review on FB.
He goes onto rants in class about his opinion, if you try to share your opinion he shuts you down. He has a schedule but he rarely goes by it. He gets frustrated when you don't do your weekly readings that are pointless. NO TEXTBOOK! NO D2L! Everything is through facebook, which is annoying. Easy class though.
By far the most influential teacher I have ever had. He offers insight to things that I never would have thought about. He is truly caring and compassionate, and he will respect you if you respect him. His class is very easy, and I learned a lot about myself as well. Please take his class if you have the opportunity.
I really enjoyed this class. It was easy but you really got a lot out of the class. He really cares for his students and wants everyone to be successful. Content wasn't hard, quizzes were easy. Provides a review if enough people access the article the day before. His discussions were interesting and helpful. Overall a good class
Dr. Usher is a professor that is certainly passionate about what he does. The man is driven, and he could definitely have a higher-paying job than the one he does. However, he loves to teach and engage with students and that's evident in his classroom. Some complain about how he talks about a wide variety of subjects, but they all tie in well.
Dr. Usher will be your best friend if you put effort into your work. Show up to class and do all the assignments to earn an A in the class.
Dr. Usher is one of the best professors I had this semester. He is more than a professor. He taught us life lessons. The things we learned this semester will help us be successful throughout life. He loves to hear our opinions on issues. He class is filled with good lectures. I would definitely recommend his class.
Professor Usher was engaging and interesting. Although most 1101 classes require the textbook, his class DOES NOT unless he tells you otherwise. A class Facebook page is created on the first day and all work, discussion posts, etc... are posted through it. It is important to refer to the syllabus because you are not notified about quizzes.
Usher is a nice guy and I truly learned a lot from his class. The whole class is done through a Facebook group, which some hate and some love. It was good by me. As long as you put in the work, he is willing to work with you. Only bewares, he can come off very strong sometimes and does not take it well when someone disagrees with him.
Great teacher, but you have to put in effort for an A, though. There are a lot of posts you have to do for his class, all through facebook.
Dont take him!!!! Per my friends with different professors, they learn about the campus and useful things. With Usher, its mostly politics, economics, sustainability, technology (as in data bases)....... It was ridiculous. Lectures are killer, assignments are never explained, zero feedback on why you got a certain grade... Save yourself from him.
This was my bets professor freshman year. If you have to take freshman seminar, he's the man to do it with. Understanding on missing work. He goes on tangents all the time. He's great to talk to. He treats you like and adult , but can be rude if you push him the wrong way.
Unlike other seminar classes. He does not teach about the school at all. He teaches about life, history, economy, nature and just random things. He does not want you to buy the book. Very easy to get an A. He is super fun to talk to and I enjoyed his class
Definitely DO NOT recommend. Didnt use D2L so you couldnt see what grades you were receiving. He made you use a group Facebook page to post assignments. Very hard to find your schedule & when quizzes & assignments are due. He was more caught up in politics & sustainability, etc. than the actual point of the class.
Very intelligent man
Professor Ushers AADS class was one of the best classes ive taken so far. He is very knowledgeable of the subject and gives a lot of details. We were given pop quizzes about assigned readings, and had one paper due for our midterm. He is a slow grader however is very flexible. 10/10 recommend
Professor Usher was very easy to communicate with both inside and outside of the classroom. He did hold students accountable for all required materials but was flexible. He allows the syllabus to be discussed and changed at the beginning of the semester and again if need be. Overall, I loved him as a professor and would retake his courses.
This professor is the worse at his best. He was just there for a paycheck. He was non-supportive about my need to succeed. It felt like I spent more time in a scavenger hunt trying to find what I needed to perform an assignment, instead of making reading assignments simple to access. He needs to learn how to construct an email, professionally.
He was fine
During the pandemic he showed sympathy and understood how hard everything was, so he didn't make his class hard at all. If you do all the dicussion posts then he will pass you with an A. He gives a lot of chances to re do missing work. It is hard to reach him sometimes but, you really don't need to. I didn't know my grade until the last day of clas
Professor Usher is a really nice guy. His class is really easy and he gave us plenty of time to turn in assignments even if they were late. However, I did email him a couple of times and he never responded which is okay I guess because I clinched an A!!!!
he goes off on tangents during lectures. his class was done through a FB group which I didn't understand bc we have a platform through the school. it was weird having to make a FB acc and using it for a class... rly good life advice through. easy going and laid back. just get ur work done. howevr, no grades in grade book and we alr took fnl tst.
He is a pretty good professor . Only problem I had with him is that his quizzes are not well organized . There was a lot of typos and incorrect information used on it.
AWFUL!! One of the worst educators Ive ever had. Rude and condescending. Clearly only teaches for the check. Accuses people of plagiarism without proof. And wont respond to any emails or questions. He threatens students or either drop the class or get reported.I DROPPED THE class. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS. Save yourself not worth the stress.
Absolutely do not take. Just dont take class with another professor or just save your self and dont take at all.
This professor is a bit harsh. The work load wasn't too bad, it's just small quizzes and essays. The essays don't have to be too long, but for someone who doesn't even give much instruction on what you're even writing about, he grades kinda harshly. The quizzes are based off of articles you have to read, but no lockdown.
I looked up this professor after taking him this semester, and was completely surprised to see all the negative reviews!! I thought he was a fantastic teacher for perspectives, and I barely did any work. There is one assignment a week, and occasionally a paper, totaling 3 papers. You can google the quiz answers and he's a super easy grader!!
Love this professor! Work is easy to understand and the grades you get will mirror the effort you put in. He does not assign much work, but he does have 4 "big" assignments. With the 4 assignments, just try your best, email him your questions and you will get an A. Very laid back professor and would take him again.
He pushed me to do more, at first i hated it but it made me a better writer.
You have a bunch of quizzes in this class, and 80% of the material on the quizzes is from content he never posted. And when asked about it, he promises to reward credit to students but never does. It is supposed to be an easy class and would be if he actually posted the materials. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Great teacher, explained everything well.
Although I took the class online, Dr. Usher made it clear what we would be working on week by week. He gives you the exact information you need in order to excel on the quizzes, no tests just mini projects that take an hour max to complete! there is also no final exam at the end of the semester! take this class if you need an African studies class!
Super easy course and the professor was easy to reach. A couple quizzes and papers and one final. I had one issue arise with something I saw on a quiz and while he didn't change anything, I appreciated that he at least heard me out about why I thought something he was doing was inequitable.
Easy class easy A. He takes too long to respond to emails.
Very easy but very informative. Quizzes are easy if you read the material.
Easy A took him for Intro to Hip Hop studies, higher level class. Highly recommend! Also, most of the course consists of common knowledge. Very easy class!
He was easy to talk to and understanding. There are multiple writing assignments so be prepared to do them.
Professor Usher was pretty chill we had one module per week with a quiz based on some readings and 2 discussion posts. Pretty easy elective!
He's super easy if you actually keep up with the course. If you have a question actually reach out and hell usually be very fair with it. I swear this man in AI generated sometimes tho.
