The class is easy and has few assignments. Some days took all 3 hours and some days we finished early and could leave. All the pertinent information is online, but attendance is required. Dr. Nowikci came across as being condescending and disrespectful and impatient towards students.
She is very accommidating and gives good lectures!
Her class was far too much work for a 2 credit intro biology lab. I spent more time on this than on my orgo lab. Also, she said that HIV was created in a lab?? The class is pretty easy its just too much work for two credits
There are 2 quizzes that are based on lecture (and some lab) content. Carly lectured fairly well to prepare us for the quizzes, but I highly recommend taking BIO 172 and 173 at the same time. The quiz questions are short answer, so write down EVERYTHING relevant because it can be graded a bit critically sometimes. Grades are mostly GSI-dependent.
mediocre lecturer, boring, but is ok. bio 173 has way too much work for only 2 credits
Bio173 is mainly a lab class, but Dr. Nowicki lectures to prepare you for lab and for the quizzes. She is a concise lecturer and is available twice a week for office hours if you need help. Overall, the class grade is mostly GSI, but I would recommend always attending lecture even though it's not mandatory to prepare you for the quizzes.
Dr. Nowicki is clearly passionate about the subject matter and teaching in general. She goes out of her way to make the class engaging. However, she did seem to gloss over students' questions instead of actually clarifying. Also, her grading scale seemed a little off (one 10-minute casual presentation was somehow worth more than our final exam).
Dr. Nowicki was very knowledgeable about the subject matter. She could come off as a little cold and non-understanding during the online lecture, but once we got to meet her in person it was clear how kind and helpful she was.
Dr. Nowicki was fine for BIO 173. She explained concepts clearly, but her class felt like more work than necessary given that it was only 2 credits.
The class is mandatory for most undergrads doing something in bio, 800 people in it, so dear God why is a large project calory counting? This should be called eating disorder 173. More than that, grading is arbitrary as there is not a clear standard for the GSIs, and for 2 credit hours it is too much work. Nowicki is brilliant though, I mean it.
Dr.Nowicki is great! This lab class isn't too demanding, literally no prelabs no postlabs, one lab report, one easy presentation, a group project, and two exams but as long as you fill the study guide and do the practice questions you should be fine. GSI team was pretty chill this spring. Nowicki loves to help and is very open to questions.
Prof. Nowicki is amazing! I loved the way she gave lectures. She made sure everything was super clear but also engaging. She is so kind and an amazing professor overall.
Dr. Nowicki is amazing! I really look up to her, as she is obviously very passionate about biology and wants to share that passion with her students. Her lectures weren't bad; she's a bit of a "no funny business" person, but she's quite kind and caring. The class was super easy imo, and not a lot of work at all.
Professor Nowicki is super funny and the lectures are all recorded so you don't have to go to lecture, but I'd recommend it. Exams are pretty chill too, BIO 173 is a pretty easy A class if you put in a little effort.
Carly was a great professor. She did lecture very quickly (I would personally say too quickly to take notes in class), but since all lectures were recorded this really wasn't an issue. Lab grading was fair but very GSI-dependent. Only 2 exams (free response style) but they followed the lecture and lab procedures very closely.
Dr. Nowicki was a pretty good professor. Lectures were a bit too fast but they're recorded. Your grade will depend on your lab and GSI. There are few assignments so make sure they're the best they can be. The material for tests build throughout the questions so understand the connections between topics. Not hard if you put in general effort.
173 is a lot of work disproportionate to the credits (long lab hours, tests, occasional group projects) Lab experience and grading varied a lot depending on the GSI. However, the lecture part of this course was always great. Carly was a fantastic, enthusiastic lecturer. She clearly wanted to support us all in our science journeys--not weed us out.
I loved taking Bio 173 (as a Bio major so I'm a little biased)! It's very lab heavy and there's a lot of work involved but if you keep caught up with everything then it's a class that's hard to do poorly in.
Professor Nowicki was great and definitely cares about her students and their learning, however lecture was often very tedious and students felt talked down to. It often felt more like a middle school class than a college course. However labs were really fun and the class wasn't too bad overall. Except for the tone in lectures, it was a good time!
Dr. Nowicki was a really good lecturer and made sure to drill down what we needed to know for the exams. She comes off as a bit intimidating but she's genuinely really sweet and cares for all her students. She gave us the chance to do multiple wellness checks and was always very understanding. This class was pretty work-heavy for 2 credits, though.
Dr. Nowicki was probably the best intro course professor I could have. She was kind and understanding, and had ways for us to contact her though we were an 800 student course. Most of your grading comes from GSI's, but during lecture she's very eager to teach and always has interesting things to talk about. A third of your grade is participation!
bruh this was a stressful course. Like the first exam, it was based on things that she only mentioned for one or two seconds during the lecture. Also, she yelled at us numerous times for packing up early. Like, we have back-to-back classes, are u kidding me!!!!!
Fairly straightforward class, exams are mostly similar to past practice exams and together worth 20% of grade. Have a good group to complete a lot of the group projects, and you will be fine. One thing that is really annoying is that lecture attendance is required and tracked through lecture quizzes but you only need 85% accuracy on all of them.
Carly Nowicki was an exceptional lecturer. She was stern and straight to the point when talking about what would need to be known for exams and lab reports. She also had many guest speakers and gave many opportunities for undergraduates that we're looking for labs/information about biology. Would love to have her as a lecturer again in the future!
Dr. Nowicki was a great professor that explained material clearly and confidently. Exams were worth only 20% percent of your grade, and the study guide and practice questions were very helpful. The guidelines for every lab and assignment were clear and easy to follow. However, the class had more work than what is expected of a 2-credit class.
Seasoned in lecturing and made sure respect was given to guest speakers (rightfully so). The class itself was insanely easy and all thanks to her and the GSIs; the study guides were clear, the QnA recordings were helpful, and the course content simply wasn't that complex. Good way to ease into UMich science courses in my first semester here.
I liked Professor Nowicki. Although I often felt that our lectures were rushed, it was often due to technical issues and difficulties rather than a lack of preparedness. The course could have been formatted better, but Professor Nowicki is definitely passionate and knowledgeable about her field!
Very energetic and thorough lectures!
Professor Nowicki treats her students like high schoolers and is constantly disrespectful in how she talks to them. The Canvas and Assignments are also disorganized and points given are usually unclear, they often post the wrong rubric and change it last minute. If I didn't HAVE to take this class I would have dropped it.
Dr. Nowicki is a great prof. Super understanding and was very informational. She didn't make students feel bad when they asked questions too!
Dr Nowicki was very nice in my experience and always seemed willing to help students. The "flipped classroom" style of the course scared me at first but really wasn't bad. The in-person learning sections each week are helpful but not necessary if you are already comfortable with the material.
This class used a flipped classroom model, so lectures were online. Dr. Nowicki hosted ALSs three days a week, and they were pretty informational. You could get points for going, but there was no penalty for not attending, so that was nice. Overall, she was a good teacher and explained the material reasonably clearly.
This was the first semester that Dr. Nowicki taught this class, and it showed. It often felt she didn't know what she was talking about or got confused and had to be interrupted by the other instructor. Aside from this, she seemed very kind and interested in what she was teaching. The flipped classroom had her not teach the bulk of the material.
She was nicer than Dr. Kurdziel, but due to the reverse classroom style, it doesn't really matter how she teaches. To be honest, I found "class" incredibly useless and did iClicker from home.
Professor Nowicki treats her students with respect and hosts very interesting and engaging lectures. I had a lot of fun in her class!
Overall, this was a good course -- very straightforward, material was covered well in lecture, I knew what was expected of me. Prof Nowicki was good & I'd take her again, but nothing made the lectures exceptional. Loved my GSI and had a good time in lab.
Lectures are mid, ppl do iclicker from home.. The actual coursework/labs were really fun. 2 exams, both are barely worth anything, no final. She does have a bit of an attitude
Very disappointed with how she withheld the grades for all of the major assignments besides exam 1 scores till after taking exam 2. She is unprepared for the class as she is dealing with issues outside of the school. If you could take it with any other teacher, I would highly suggest doing so.
No point in going to lecture as the first half is always filled with whining. Treats her students like middle schoolers by yelling at them during lecture for being on their phones and micromanaging the required fieldtrip. Has an attitude and is unpleasant to be around. Would highly recommend taking this course with another professor if possible.
Lectures are engaging and I walk away from them knowing what's expected in exams/labs. 2 exams taken that were VERY similar to the practice test/study guide. The lab report was pretty difficult but manageable. Concepts felt easy with previous intro bio knowledge. Only annoying thing was a delay in grade releases, but went ok for me.
Dr. Nowicki is a very good lecturer and you can tell that she really wants you to understand the content. Lectures are graded based on iClicker participation. Her office hours are very helpful and I would recommend attending them if you have any questions or need clarification on anything from lecture/lab.
Overall this class was not bad, def easier than any chem lab here. Actually study for exams (they are similar to the practice ones). Grading takes a while depending on your GSI, but you should be familiar with what you're getting. Pretty easy/ fun lab.
As long as you stay on top of deadlines and make sure to communicate with your lab group on projects an A should not be hard to get. For exams, Dr. Nowicki makes sure to provide lots of review material and I found that the exams were very similar to the practice ones she'd provide. Overall very chill class.
Overall, this was a very straightforward lecture and Prof Nowicki clearly communicates content. I wouldn't say that lecture itself was enjoyable, but I had a great GSI which made lab fun. Make sure to keep up with deadlines and communicate well with group work partners. Most grades weren't published until end of semester which was annoying.
Absolutely fantastic prof. Honestly my favorite here. She really truly cares more than most. She expects engagement and effort, and will make you a better student by the end of the semester.
The other, not good, reviews are just because they were when she was a new prof. The difficulty is because this is a weeder course, not her. She really truly cares not just about our success but really understanding everything. If you don't understand something, she's ready to explain it 100 different ways until you do. 1000% recommend.
Carly explained the material very clearly and in a way that was easy to understand. The lecture was entertaining, especially for an intro bio lab class. Exams weren't that bad, and followed the practice exam on canvas as well as the study guide. If you have the option to take this class with Carly I would recommend you do.
Personally I found every time a person had a question it was met with hostility, I also found that the professor does not explain the material further in ALS as it was supposed to be. I also found that her comments about the preparation of blue books to be very harsh and created a negative environment.
Im not sure why people say that this professor is hostile or rude, she is incredibly nice. The class is structured very well so although there is a lot of material, it is still clear what the path to success is. It is vital that you watch all of the material, and the exams can be pretty tricky. Overall, she definitely cares for student success.
I love Prof Nowicki. She is very straightforward, focusing on the big picture stuff which is good for the broad material in 171. She's good at simply explaining tough material and she's very approachable and I find the review sessions before the exams SO helpful. TAKE HERRRR
Flipped classroom setting made it difficult to really learn the content. The mandatory ALS was 3x a week and would often only go through a couple questions. She was regularly talking down to students for asking questions or not seeming to understand the content. She would mention the high fail rate of the test and then not curve.
Flipped style wasnt bad, and the ALSs were nice to go to if you still needed extra coverage on a topic. I would often not attend and just answer clickers from home. She occasionally made discouraging comments towards our exam scores or our understanding when we *just* learned a new concept, but besides that she genuinely was a overall good prof!
Dr. Nowicki gave pretty good lectures and was usually pretty easy to understand. Sometimes she wasn't the most clear and would kind of talk in circles, but if you focus on the central idea of what she's saying and don't get fogged up by the extra words, you'll understand. She does flipped classroom which takes a lot of time up outside of class.
Flipped classroom model with heavy homework, and has difficult questions on the exam that revolve around subjects she mentioned in one sentence in the lecture. Not to mention, prepping for the exam is basically nonexistent besides 2 practice exams, everything else is 10 times easier than actual questions. Wish I didn't have to take her class again
I liked the ALS sessions for the most part. I found them to be informative and I felt like I retained information from them. I will say sometimes Dr. Nowicki could be pretty passive aggressive but other than that she seemed very caring for her students.
Dr. Nowicki was great! She is the best 171 instructor. In lecture, she does exam practice problems and spells out to students what they need to know for the exam. Expectations are very clear. She is great at explaining course content and always respectful to students. She gave lots of opportunities for students to ask questions during lecture.
Dr. Nowicki cares deeply about her students' learning and is always willing to help! My advice is to take advantage of office hours, make sure to take THOROUGH notes on the lecture videos, and utilize practice exams and practice question sets as much as possible.
This class may seem easy, but the tests are confusing and full of trick questions. I read every recommended textbook section and still struggled. The content isn't hard, but the way it's assessed is unfair. Nowicki often didn't know answers to her own questions and made frequent mistakes in lectures and office hours.
Legit questions are written like riddles. You can understand everything and still get marked down.
I took her Bio 171 class Winter 2025, she was super clear about course expectations and was always willing to answer questions during office hours. Be sure to stay on top of readings and discussions!
gave me the worst bubble guts of all time after eating that fiber one bar for an experiment.
Lectures tend to be slightly annoying.
She's a okay professor but the exams were full of trick questions, and it felt like I was being assessed on my reading comprehension and not the content itself. Most of the time you're just trying to decipher what the question is asking you. Also the flipped classroom is a waste of time.
i ain't even out of her class yet and im already so sick of these papers. labs aren't hard at all, its the follow-up assignments that'll kill you. plus its wild that your grade is determined basically by your exams, since lab attendance doesn't count for much. shes also incredibly passive aggressive and her lectures feel like shes yelling at you.
If you've ever wanted to relive high school, this is the class. She talks to everyone like we're 15, polite yet condescending, and exams are so vague, it's just about decoding her wording. There are exams instead of lab practicals and way too many random assignments for a LAB course. Good luck, being a required class, sadly, there's no escaping her.
She is an alright teacher and 173 is a pretty easy class. Expectations are very clear but unfortunately she has a habit of going back on her word. Class would be less stressful if she was an honest person.
Class was not difficult to get an A. The lab is pretty okay, but she is such a passive aggressive and condescending person, would be so much more interesting without her lectures!
Confusing exams, boring lectures, iclickers graded for accuracy where only 10% of class gets right.
She was a very engaging lecturer and good at explaining concepts. She was straight to the point (which may have come off as condescending to others), but this was refreshing to me as it was clear what I had to know or not. I appreciate the emphasis she put on science communication. The class was also easy to do well in.
Good class. Easy. Carly gives bot
Even for question like what is your favorite part of the class has a correct answer...
Her lectures really are not terrible, but I do not agree with the way that the class is structured at all. Nowicki requires us to stay in lab all 3 hours, regardless of productivity, and to be entirely honest--is not the friendliest. Honestly probably would take again if was the only choice, but def not on my own accord.
She likes to make her essays reading comprehension tests instead of biology ones. She is insufferable to listen to in lecture and she makes the worst analogies to try and "relate" to the class. If you can take a class NOT with her it is a personal victory.
Avoid her. Awful class structure and has two exams for a lab course. The exam wording is extremely vague and she gives out "Practice exams" with free responses when the actual exam is multiple choice and has nothing to do with practice ones.
These reviews seem pretty exaggerated. Bio173 is an easy A if you show up and do the work. You need 375 points out of 460 total offered for an A which is pretty generous. Exams are a little weird but all multiple choice so it's not too bad. She's not a great lecturer but you don't need to fully understand everything she goes over in lecture for lab
Comments about her attitude are not exaggerated, but you only need a 375/460 to get a 4.0 in the class, which is an 81%. She likes to brag about her kids being smart and it passive aggressive sometimes, but if you can look past that, her exams are honestly fun but she has questions that will trick you. However, they were not exceedingly difficult.
Lectures are not insufferable but she does seem very passive aggressive and annoying at times. The review for tests are nothing like the actual test but you only need 375/460 total points to pass and that is an 81% so thats very generous. The three-hour abs however are painful to sit through. I would take again.
nowicki is a great instructor. she genuinely loves her job and cares abt students' wellbeing. the class is never boring; we always have something different going on like a group project or field trip. its cringe when she tries to appeal to a younger audience but lowk funny too. lecture is mandatory with iclicker; u can skip some and be fine
While Dr. Nowicki could be condescending at times, she always outlined exactly what was expected. The grading system was very forgiving, tests were fair, and there were lots of opportunities to get extra points. The field trips were super fun and engaging. Labs were a little tedious and were very dependent on your GSI (shoutout to my goat Kai).
I didn't really interact with Professor Nowicki, but my GSI was great and he made the class enjoyable overall. The grading system is points based so it's really easy to succeed and get an A. I would recommend!
This is the second time I have taken a class with Dr. Nowicki and she is undoubtably my favorite professor I have had here. She is incredibly caring and goes out of her way to ensure students are mentally and physically taken care of.
Professor Carly is the most professional professor I've ever seen! She cares about her students a lot and she biology very enjoyable and not boring at all. She made everything easy to follow. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Labs were too long and I believe that this is what they should adjust (3hrs!) but Dr. Nowicki is professional and she'll let you love science.
This class was super fun and it worked to me as a relief. Professor Carly is super knowledgeable and I learned many things from her.
....Overall, my favourite professor.
Professor Carly is the best professor and her her lectures are very interactive.
