Tests aren't too bad, but absolutely unfair because the questions are vague.Always define terminology tho not asked.Marks deducted eventho it's not part of test/exam questions.Boring lect. Will never tell what will be test.
Crap, please if you can do not go to his class. Drop it at all costs.Take another prof. If you have to go to his class, you can't miss any becuase he gives pop quizes.
DROP HIS COURSE! Worst prof I've ever had. Unfair, biased opinions. Course material was scattered, very unorganized.
Stay away, please for your own good.
He has very high expectations and therefore he marks extremely hard. U need to blow him away with new impressive knowledge in order to get a decent mark!
Comes to class dressed like he's a big deal. Material is boring, his teaching makes it much more painful. Basically does laps around the room as he gives his lectures. A pain in the neck for students. Testing methods are stupid.
He is awful. Very unfair, very unclear, VERY VERY unhelpful. He does not explain how he will mark things, and also threatens to give us all bad marks because he is disorganized. He is also extremely arrogant and doesn't give any breaks in 2 hour lectures.
Awful. Avoid him at all costs. He is petty, childish, unreasonable, very arrogant, boring, disorganized. Threatens to give low marks because students won't plan their lives around his class. Terrible prof.
Omg people as much of what all u said is true. He is still a amazing teacher, and VERY reasonable. GIVE BEYOND EASY TESTS/QUIZZES/MIDTERMS/EXAMS. SO stop complaining. He teaches the course VERY well, and pleasant to be in his class.
Learnt nothing more in MKT200 than what MKT100 taught. The prof is not compassionate at all. quizes are either too easy, or too hard. Very unfair marking scheme in the mkt game that we played. Keeps threatening about deducting mark all the time.
Extremely arrogant. Basically regurgitates the textbook - only reason to go to class are quizzes. Unfair marker, no clear outline of what is expected. Gives no useful information. Mean, petty, obnoxious, boring. Thinks very highly of himself. Turned an otherwise enjoyable class into a nightmare.
Ya sure he does make petty threats and does treat you a bit childish, but he gets the material across which makes the course pretty easy. People need to relax and stop worrying about his threats which he will never go through with anyways.
i dont know what ppl are complaining about, i thought he was great. read the slides dont even bother with the text book b.c the slides are pretty much all you'll need. the simulation game was fun and interesting .. but i guess a bit unfair to those groups who didnt do to well.
he can turn an easy course into a **** of a course
I thought that he taught the material very well, and did not rush through it like most profs do. The simulation game was fun, and the quizzes were fair. Overall, I enjoyed the class.
He's terrible! Just e-mail him an you'll know what I mean. Avoid at all costs
Extremelly helpful, organized, and passionate. His slides are awesome!
he's not as bad as everyone is saying. a fair prof, and his accent makes the class interesting. TIS AND INTRISTING KLASS... lol 'do tis tree times'... what a guy
Much better course than MKT100. You use the same text and only have to pay $30 some odd dollars for a license to play a market simulation game. Midterm average for the class was 81% and it was all M/C. Prof is good, but lectures are really boring. Overall worthwhile course.
Farrell carries himself like a dictator. If this "instructor" can be avoided, then avoid him at all costs!
Very unhelpful, very boring prof/course
He is a funny guy, but he tends to go on and on about his work experience! The idea of pop quizzes seems ancient, but yet he still employs it. The idea of paying in US Dollars for the Simulation also sucks. In all, he's cool, but thinks he is the 2nd coming of God!
He is A HUGE POMPOUS ASS! singling people out in a gigantic lecture hall is not cool. I think he loves himself a little too much. His grading scheme on the simulation is completely unfair. You cant talk, eat, breathe or fart in his lecture.
I took this course with Farrell last semester. And I would like to warn you that he will likely screw you on your final. I know of several students that went into the exam with A's and saw their finally grade dramatically drop. Injustice and abuse of entrusted power took place.
Umm...very hard marker, not very nice. Hes pretty mean actually, and wow i thought i was gonna do a lot better in this course!!:O
He knows the material is boring. Good prof though, good sense of humour. Marketplace simulation I believe isn't fair in terms of marks as it is a competition against groups (where only one group can get the highest marks). Test & exam were easy.
His exams are so easy! He kept us on our toes with his surprise quizzes!
The course was easy.. he just ruined it.. doesn't really mind embaressing students.. simulation was very unfair.. ppt was good.. but didn't understand y he posted them after the lecture.. quizzes and the midterm were easy but the exam was a little tough.
We got the point... U have a PhD from University of Manitoba!!!! - His classes are pretty interesting, compared to MKT100, and he keeps people glued to the lecture with his stories.. He just has a tendency of trashing other countries from 1 bad experience, which is very unfair... thinks he's God, and messes u up with the hardest exam...
This guy is too cocky for no reason. Constantly tries to scare everyone with his pop quizzes, and feeds off of the fact that everyone is begging him not to give them. I hated his little sarcastic jokes about how hard the final exam is gonna be, i mean just relax and teach the class..! We're all there to learn anyway
his pop quizes are hard! and his midterm was easy.. but i've heard he screws u over for the final. (which i dont know about cuz i have the exam today lol. he has a lot of stories which can be a good thing..but gets a little repetitive.
Overall mkt200 is an easy class if you read before class. the midterm, simulation game and quizzes are easy. the final exam is a bit tricky.
HOnestly, its not hard at all. Just read the book before the class to prepare for the pop quizzes. the f-ing midterm was TOO easy and the simulation is very easy. The exam was a bit tricky but what u expect, its a 2nd year mkt course. All the bad ratings on this prof is odd, this guy is funny too and he will email you back pretty fast. ei.
it's an easy course, but this prof just tries to make your life miserable in the course
He plays mind games with lots of the students. His 5 quizzes are pop quizzes so you need to be at every class from beginning to end. His mid term and finals are pretty easy.
This prof was fair. The tests and quizzes were fairly straight forward, but you must read the text (ALL the answers are in his lecture notes and text). Some of the questions are tricky, but THIS IS UNIVERSITY!!! If you don't put in the effort, (which is expected of you), then you will have problems like the ppl in the previous posts.
Nothing much to complain about. Nothing much to brag about either. This guy is just OK. He is the perfect definition of a neutral professor. His character is up-beat but his teaching is like meh who cares what you have to say. Quizzes are easy. Tests are hard. Group projects are just stupid. I hated my group. They were g a y
This prof is arrogant as hell. Im not complining about the material or the tests (I do my work and receive approproate grades), but Farrel overall just annoyed me the whole semester! He tries TOO hard to make the class harder, just so students will take it seriously. I swear he has insecurity issues... Drop him...
When n MKT200 I achieved a A grade n all courses but this 1.Why?Farel doesn’t follow the rules of the simulation & the exam had a ques that was worded incorrectly & subsequently every answer was wrong.Shafted every student, Farel doesn’t meet in a timely manner. Can’t appeal.Absolutely appalling course mngt, procedural errors and negligent behaviour
He was a pretty bad prof in my opinion. He used the idea of pop quizzes to make us come to class and then for the VERY last class he made it into a game and made us think we got to choose what would be on the exam even though it was already set. Wasted a full 2 hrs right there. That's what his classes are, a waste of time. Overall, course was easy.

Memorize the book and his slides and you'll get a A minimum. I went into the final with a A+. He's annoying but stick it out that course is easy and the text book is so short you can read all the course chapters in a few hours.

This guy is funy, his lectures are alright. He's a hard marker and a tight ass. If you can get a different prof. I would recommend you do that. He no shows you for meetings, is not reliable, and doesn't give you a straight answer on anything. Avoid him if you can .
If u feel like being talked at he's the prof for u. The least accommodating professor I have ever come into contact with. If your grandma dies and you miss a test be prepared to provide a death certificate.
you need to attend his class because of the pop quiz's. tricky quiz's so be prepared he love to trick student. he doesn't answer questions properly most of the time. he doesn't like to help students( so dont miss any of his pop quiz (there is no make-up quiz). take this course with any other prof or online.
Just make sure you go to all classes and do all the pop quizzes, sometimes he does two quizzes in one day - so watch out!! He never tries to help out the situation that you're in. You're all on your own in this course, just memorize the book.
Not the greatest prof. try to get a different one if u can. Like everyone else has said .. he doesnt help you out, read the text book and go to class or your screwed. Quizes are tricky.. at least he is a little comical
This is a huge class, so its difficult to pay attention to prof. Online simulation waste of $$/time, doesn't teach you anything, and it's worth 30% of your final mark. Textbook was b.s, just read his slides for the quizzes/tests, which are really easy. He isn't a bad prof, you can get an easy B+ if you try.
Not the best or the worst. Lectures unmemorable at best. TAs mark assignments and in my experiences lacked knowledge of simulation, which directly made the difference between us getting a C or an A, which was disappointing. I think he'd better served teaching smaller classes, but who wouldnt be?
I'll admit, he is a very personable person and cracks jokes regularly. But his class is way to hard. His pop quizzes have case questions, with only 10 minutes to complete. The simulation is worth way too much (30%). His exam is cumulative (17 chapters) 120 MC cases and you only have 2 hours to complete it. Avoid it if you have the choice.
read the textbook not once...but two - three times than u will Ace it...TA mark the simulation report alittle bit hard in my opinion...since the class average for that is 7.5/10
course is easy if you read the textbook 4-5 times....some questions in pop quiz are tricky......questions in midterm will appear in the final again...simulation waste time + money cuz you dont get to learn anything from it its just gay...and the TA mark hard on it too since everyone is getting 7-7.5/10 on it
I just honestly dont think he can teach or keep the class interested. I belive he is **** towards certain racials. Worst of all attendance is mandaotry of pop quizes. I knew he was not the best prof but I no other option, this man is killing my gpa.
BAAAAAAAD PROF.... terrible will kill ur gpa unless u consider urself really lucky... i am getting A's in pretty much all my classes expect his i am getting like a C.... terrible prof avoid him at all cost and tell ur friends to avoid him untill he is gone or something
WOW... who gave him permission to teach or to say a word.... who even gave him his phd... someone should asses his teaching skills...
Blah!!! Terrible teacher not even professor... gets paid to travel and you get sub profs and he didnt cover the last 2 chapters and he will test us on them... AND he posts stuff really late ...
Farrell can be funny, yet he is so concerned about educating others about his educational background rather than the actual material of the course. Get off you high horse buddy. Secondly, his pop quizzes are pretty easy..but defeat his purpose of ppl reading the text b/c everyone read it during his lectures. Simulation=useless!FINAL WAS KILLER
Easily the worst class offered at Ryerson. A total waste of money with his error filled textbook to his useless simulation on toothpaste. I have a question for you Carlyle, Are you the worst prof at Ryerson? Oh I know! YA MONNNNN! By the way, he calls Asians "dem chineses". Man is always going on trips too! GPA crusher! Avoid!!!!
Horrible. Pop quizzes are unnecessary & doesn't assess how good of a student you are, only how much you can cram last second. He'll give you a failing grade (out of 15%)if your contribution is negative. Midterm is ok if u study a lot.
This guy is an ass. He's fun to listen to in lectures but completely irrelevant. You're better of reading the book. His pop quizzes and method of administration are terrible and unorganized as well.
Good material but wrong choice of prof. The quizzes cover material in that class which means u study before class or when he's lecturing. And if u think class is gonna finish 1/2 earlier, WRONG! this man can drag it on till the end! And all u hear from him is "IS IT CLEAR?"..drives u nuts..5 pop quizzes either M/C or short answer.
This guy is an idiot and you should avoid him at all costs!!! Easily the worst prof at Ryerson. Who gave this guy a job let alone a Ph.D.? Oh take his class he'll tell you all about himself. Go away Carlyle do everyone a favour!!
His lectures are quite boring, but extremely important as facts brought up in class will probably be on a mid-term or test. He gives out pop mini-cases and quizzes during the course, so study before you go to class. Very passionate professor, but tends to stray away from the material. I didn't buy the textbook, but skim over the vocab for the exam.
Carlyle... I took his class last year just came to say to avoid this idiot with all your might. Your grade will not reflect your effort. This man should be kicked out of ryerson because he doesnt know how to teach and worst of all he is arrogant. You need to read the book like thrice to get an A.. ( thats 3 *30 pages)he is nuts
probably the worst prof in the entire universe. after taking the course, i think a snail could have taught it better. hey, at least a snail can think better than he can!
HARD! His midterm, POP QUIZZES, and final exams are the hardest marketing exams at Ryerson. His lectures are interesting. Try to do good on the stimulation. Avoid him!
Absolutely the worst prof at Ryerson. Makes derogatory comments about other races. Singled out a student and called him a "Fake Jamaican" because he was white. Horrible teacher, horrible person. If you have any issues, don't bother, he will act as if he cares and then stab you in the back!
Oh look Carlyle rated himself!!! this guy is the worst Prof I have ever had. Made me move to another program - hello marketing good by management
Don't bother with the powerpoints they are useless. For mid-terms and exam make the book your best friend. Simulation is random and pointless, I learned nothing from it. Quizzes are a good way to boost your marks.
HOW DID THIS GUY GET HIS PHD. EASILY ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSOR. ONLY CARES ABOUT HIMESELF DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A GOOD OR EVEN PASS THE GRADE. IMPOSSIBLE TO DEAL WITH.
He has the global experience and gives plenty of personal examples in class. He is the head of the GMS department and has other things to worry about which is why he isn't as lenient as other professors but for a class like International Marketing the sternness makes it that more interesting as it is essentially memorization of the slides and text.
My personal account with this professor is that he does have a lot of work experience but does not teach the class in an engaging way. Most of the class is just discussion, most the time irrelevant material, he also gave 5 pop quizes on material which sometimes was hardly ever mentioned in class. To do well you should rather just read the book.
30%Of ur final grade is out of Inclass-QuiZ(5)/case studies(5).HE marks da cases extremely hard.I guess the casestudies &Assignment is 1 way for him 2bring ur mark down in the class. As per exams and Popquizes if u read the chapter its a piece of cake. However he is not helpful,I sent him 4 e-mails concerning the project and he failed 2 respond2 any!
Took this course over the summer, easiest course of life. Very organized and prepared. Just take notes during class, prof always drops hints about pop quiz questions. Make sure to study previous lecture because case studies are always on the main concepts. Make sure to summarize case arguments. Hated marketing before I took this course. Great prof.
Not too bad of a teacher, but he's got something up his ass about people leaving early. He has pop quizzes at the end of lectures. Finished the final in one hour, and he told me to sit back down even if I have an early flight the next morning (the exam lasted till 9.30)..he is quite unclear about what to expect in his exams
Baaaaaaaaaad
The lectures were not engaging and were just full of unrelated anecdotes. Despite having an interest in marketing, I learned nothing in this course as the lectures were very random. The quizzes were marked by you having specific "keywords" in your answer. As for the tests, the MC questions were full of ambiguous answers. Take it with someone else!
Dr. Farrell brings up real life examples and stories that relate to the course material being covered. Some people don't like that but I would rather listen to that then him just reading off slides from the text. One thing I didn't like were the pop quizzes but he was helpful in dealing with a missed quiz. This is your typical read the book course
GREAT PROF! HE is very engaging and entertains you with real life stories. If you show up to class and participate, you should do fine. He laughs at jokes and is a very approachable person. Others are wrong about him having issues about leaving class, hes fine. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.
He's an okay prof. Avoid if you do not like being randomly selected to answer a question in front of the entire class. Horrible course content, so take that into consideration. Go to class because there will be pop quizzes. He doesn't post slides until after class. He also makes the exam literally the day before the exam, so don't expect help
This prof is the worst prof ever conceived. His experience is irrelevant as he uses the most stupid and off topic examples. He is not willing to help any students, he just throws you around and makes you feel like ****. He tries to sell you his textbook like some cheap flea market salesman. Dont take this course at all. dont do it.
Heard bad things about him but I enjoyed him as a Professor. Funny down to earth guy. If you go to class, take notes during his lectures and read the text book you will do fine. Went to speak to him during office hours and was very approachable.
Dr Farrell is a Boss. He has a load of experience and know how to tie in the theory with real word experiences. Not the easiest course, but you will learn allot. Also note, you must attend ALL classes due to the pop quiz which can seriously drop you final grade. After its all said and done, I would recommend Farrell's class any day.
The fact that he is the department head made me reconsider my choice of attending Ryerson. During lectures, CF will ask class common sense questions that students think are redundant. When no one answers he will call on people. You feel patronized answering questions like "the market looks very attractive, would you enter?" Very unhelpful.
His lectures are really dreadful, but necessary due to pop quizzes. The competitive component didn't made sense and was irrelevant to the course. The textbook is a must to pass the course.
Aside from what other people say, I enjoyed him as Prof. If you go to class and make notes on his lectures you'll get an A. I didn't think the book was necessary.
Bad prof.
Despite what everyone says, he's a really good prof if you aren't lazy like everyone else rating him. He gives pop quizzes every other week, so you can skip classes if you really wanted to. Other than that, if you study off his powerpoints youll do well on everything. If you put in minimum effort you should be fine. Didn't need the textbook at all.
Nice guy, the classes isn't too difficult if you pay attention. I recommend studying more from the textbook and his actual lecture rather than the slides as they're pretty vague. The simulation is hit or miss.
Was a little hesitant on taking a class with Farrell because of all the bad reviews on here, but decided to anyways. He's awesome! I don't get what people are saying. His lectures are pretty interesting, and he talks to the class and engages with them in a way that will make your really understand the material. Exams were fair, overall great prof!
Avoid him at all costs!
I took this course online and found him to be a bit disorganised. Instructions on key matters were often only provided after a student would ask about it. Course content is extremely dense - too much was fit into the 13 weeks. Did not find him very helpful when you ask questions, you will have to figure it out on your own.
This prof is ridiculous. His pop quizzes are written extremely hard, shows no remorse for students, I don't understand why he is a prof. He wrote a crappy textbook, that you have to read which is complete trash. Marks extremely hard, why? I don't know. Do yourself a favour and take it the following semester with another prof.
His lectures are interesting. His tests are tough. The course brought down my GPA. 120 MC on the final 2 hour exam. Thats less than a min per question! The questions were long too. 60 MC on the midterm for 1 hour. The grade distribution isnt very fair with the group project. Avoid taking a class with him. He treats his tests like an LSAT!
I have had terrible profs but he is by far the worst one I've had at Ryerson. He genuinely wants everyone to fail with classes averages in 40s and 50s for everything. The content is easy but he makes the quizzes, midterm, exam and the simulation INSANELY hard for no reason. PLEASE don't take him if you can. You will hate your life.
He basically wants you to fail
WORST PROF EVER!20 MC on the final 2-hour exam. The questions were long too. 60 MC on the midterm for 1 hour. The grade distribution isn't very fair with the group project.
Midterm is 60 minutes 60 questions and final is 120 minutes 120 questions. 5 pop quizzes throughout the semester but he decided to give us the 4th and 5th quiz on the same day because he is just a great guy. When I submitted my peer evaluation 2 hours late he gave me a 0/5 because it would be unfair to the rest of the class to give me full marks.
Pop quizzes. Not enough time to finish tests or quizzes. Unreasonable expectations. GPA crusher....
Extremely cocky and ego bigger than the lecture hall. Not a prof for the students, he's a prof for the money. Acts like his class is the only class you are taking and won't help you at all with any question. Quizzes were ridiculous, no time to do them and completely random dates. Made this class 10 times harder than it should have been.
If it wasn't for those 5 pop quizzes worth 4% each, no one would go to his class. He's here for the money, and he is ruthless,he just doesn't care. Legitimately the stereotypical prof, that your high school teacher warned you about. That textbook of his is more confusing than trying to understand women.
Worst prof ever!!!!! He wants everyone to fail. Pop quizzes are ridiculously hard.
Dr. Farrell is a knowledgable and hilarious prof. Clear grading criteria, simulation is kind of confusing though.
Being in my last semester, this class was by far the worst experience I've ever had at Ryerson. He has absolutely no consideration for students. He made online weekly quizzes on Friday evening, and even though I had a lecture he did not care at all. His textbook is poorly written , redundant and hard to follow. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Hes tenured, so he doesnt care because hes untouchable. Class averages for midterms and quizzes were consistently low, but because a few people got good grades, his reasoning is there was nothing wrong with the test. You didnt study enough. His tests and exams are long and unfair. His book isnt very good. Avoid him if you care about your GPA
Content could be interesting, but he makes everything unnecessarily hard. Would not take him again.
Extremely poor course facilitation. Inconsiderate of people's time and schedules. Makes simulation due at Friday at midnight, quizzes only available on Saturday at 6PM. Only gives a week to complete both final assignments (video and report). Online courses should provide flexibility for students. Would not recommend to anyone. Avoid if possible
Save your GPA and AVOID! quizzes and exams are so unfair. A minute per question and questions are long and scenario based. Took this online in the summer, Prof is passive aggressive and is so inconsiderate. Forget about your fridays and Saturdays if you're taking this online. 5, 20 MC quizzes, 70 MC midterm, 120 MC final and 30% group work
a real gpa killer. this was the worst class I've ever taken. whats sad is that hes the only prof for this class. midterm and exams are ridiculously hard when half of the questions are in extra af paragraphs. 120 mins for 120 qs you better be usain bolt at reading. the material is actually not bad but he made it unnecessarily harder. feelsbadman.
I actually really enjoyed this prof's lectures. He is very experienced and knowledgeable in the field and tries to engage the class. If you want an A, it's best to read the textbook. You'll also need a good group for the simulation. Overall, a pretty enjoyable class if you're interested in International Marketing in general.
Class wasnt hard. As long as you show up to class and listen to what hes teaching and youll be fine. Most of what he teaches in on the midterm or final exam. Must show up to class because there are pop quizzes. (Graded by his TAs so its an easy A). MUST find a good group for the simulation and it does matter. He is a good prof.
Bad prof. Pop quizzes worth a total of 20% of your grade. Consider 20% of your grade down the drain. They are not M/C, but short answer questions and long case studies that you are only given 15 minutes to complete. Has nothing to do with what you learned in class. His lectures mean nothing because he wants you to purchase the book he wrote. Bad.
I took his CGMS 522 online class and he is the worst prof I ever had in my 3 years at ryerson. He does not care about his students. He unlocks the final group assignment a week before it is due so it is harder to finish the project on time. His times for quizzes are not changeable so you have to be free every Friday to do it. Please avoid him.
He is a professor. Does not care about his students at ALL and doesn't care if you pass or fail either. His pop quizzes are either short answer, case studies or multiple choice (rarely) and you have 15 min to do them. Midterm is 60 MC q's- 60 min to finish, final is 120 MC q's -120 min to complete. Simulation is useless too. Avoid him.
WORST PROF AT RYERSON!! Avoid his class at all costs, he really DOES NOT care about his students. 120 MC questions and 120mins for the final exam is not an accurate representation of a students ability/ knowledge. Some students need longer then a min per question, have test anxiety. He doesn't even give them the chance to mentally process Qs.
Carlyle is a knowledgeable prof who makes the course unnecessarily difficult. The Midterm and final were quite challenging. If you don't have a decent group for the project you're going to have a tough time passing. The pop quizzes were absolutely brutal. Class averages were between 20-60%. Study hard for this course and be prepared to work!!!
Honestly one of the best profs I've had in a while. Really enjoyed his class as he applies lectures a lot to real life cases. He does pick on people but it really helps trust me. If you want an A, it's BEST to read the textbook for cases, quizzes and exams. Overall, just try and participate in class (probably won't pick on you if you do)
Good guy and has entertaining lectures. Content is nothing special and can easily be learned by yourself at home, but 20% of your final grade is pop-quizes so you need to attend every other lecture... His simulation compitition is stupid. In a class of 150, 75 will get above 66% and the 75 will get below 33%-66%. TA's are completely useless.
He isn't that bad, 30% for simulation and report is easy marks, midterm was straight forward. Only thing is the pop quiz's will drop your grade
This guy is a total joke, 10-page essay and 10+ slides powerpoint only available for one week and have to be submitted within a week. 60MC in 1 hr. He does not care about students, even this is a Chang school class, Tests are on FRIDAY NOON, makes totally non-sense for part-time students who work full time. NEVER reply to student's email, AVOID
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I REPEAT DONT. He does not care about you at all. He just cares about u getting his textbook and he doesnt help you if u email Him. He says everything is on D2L. Quizzes and tests are so bad. Gives you 1 minute per question yet most of the questions requires u to read a whole block of text. Not a good prof at all.
He has so many required readings to go over it's crazy to think that we're only at half the semester. He only gives 60 minutes for 60 multiple choice questions where they are almost all scenario-based application questions. Extremely unreasonable and a lack of resources that are relevant to the test. 0 lecture slides and no outline of assessments.
Awful and Disgusting class; never take him if you are not in GMS major. Doesnt even helps you out for everything related to simulation projects. Finals and Midterms are awful and gives an hour to do 60 questions which were mostly long paragraphs .Exams, Projects and Quizzes are due on the weekends and fridays which is unfair for part time students.
Very hard marker, exams were very difficult with hardly enough time to complete. There is a group project towards the end of the term worth 40% and you are only given less than a week to complete it. GOODLUCK, and brace yourself.
Took his course online and he did not hold a single lecture. Paid over $700+ to teach myself the course. Quizzes are a time-crunch, there's about a minute per question. Doable if you study the material really well. Replied to emails sometimes weeks later and overall unhelpful.
worst prof ever DO NOT TAKE
He is the worst professor i've had. Only cares about selling this textbook. Good luck passing the tests/quizzes if you dont buy the textbook no matter how hard you try to learn the slides/materials. Final Report is released a week before due date, the whole class begged him to extend the deadline, he was unmoved. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS/ OR HIM!!!!!!!
The man loves to read from the text book. The course itself is 25% based on how you do in a computer simulation. You do this course for the credit and nothing else. It is too bad because he has a wealth of experience but seems unable or unwilling to impart it.
if you are not in gms, do not take this class!!! he is the only prof who teaches it and you will suffer tremendously. students said mental health was terrible since he assigned a 10-page report and PowerPoint due in one week and he did not care. simulation rank is worth 25% of your grade and it's marked unfairly.
If you cant find any different prof then go with them for this course. This mans a hard marker.
He doesn't care about his students, unfair marker, and 25% of your mark is uncontrollable due to the final placement in the simulation. Midterms were unfair with a lot of reading and not enough time to answer questions and same with the final. He only gave one week to do 2 major assignments at the same time and at one point he fought with students
Carlyle doesnt care about his students one bit. Always finding news ways to make us suffer and his marking scheme is a joke, very tough on grades. Avoid at all cost!
GMS522 is a very hard & intense course, but if you do the readings, an A+ is definitely attainable. Carlyle makes the course hard even though it doesn't need to be. The simulation is 40% of your mark, get a good group! Quizzes/Exams weren't too bad unless you studied & read the book; questions are based on how you understand the concepts & logic.
Mr Farrell is unfortunately one of those profs whos just there for his paycheque and to sell his book. Gives very little time for exams with VERY long case study questions, simulation is marked solely on a narrow criteria which most end up doing poorly on. Very lazy, dry, lacks understanding for students. Try to avoid.
Will make you think hes very professional because of his long resume and experience but in reality he probably got fired from every single job he had due to his annoying and narcissistic personality. No clue how he is still a professor at Ryerson. Just reads off the slides, doesnt care about his students, and his exams are extremely tough.
Ryerson please get rid of him!! Had to take this course with him and hated it. Very bad prof and laugh and makes fun of you when you ask a question. Makes the lives of his students unbearable.
I have quite ambivalent about him. His lectures are good, interesting, and informative. However, the exams were a serious time crunch. You MUST know the textbook in and out (slides are a summary) Also 20% of your mark is based on a simulation, I was lucky to get third, if you were last you got a 25% in that section. Read the textbook, good luck.
In this course, I can admit that the grading scheme for the simulation is unfair, my group was lucky enough to do well but I know many people who tried really hard and still ended up with a 35% for 25% of their grade. READ HIS TEXTBOOK! He literally wrote the textbook idk why ppl would think they don't have to read it? If you read it tests are fine
YOU REMEMBER ONE THING - do not TAKE his class, In class we do not have much substantial and explanation, he will cut your score, and he has bad temper, my friends and me emailed to him and he does not even respect us, even will blame us, though we sent email to his questions is not complicated. not to be alarmist.
By far, the WORST professor I have had through my four years of university. He makes you buy HIS textbook and a simulation ($130+ total), did not provide sufficient information for tests & his grading scheme makes no sense. 60% of your grade is based on a competition!!!! Not on course concepts or how well you know them. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!
He doesn't teach you anything, you read the lousy textbook HE wrote and do his quizzes and tests which are insanely specific and don't actually test your knowledge, only if you memorized his textbook examples. Overall, I don't think I've had such an uninvolved professor who doesn't care about his students success or not. Avoid if you can.
He is just not fair and does not consider the student's opinions especially for the group project which you have to pay for and most probably end up falling due to his unclearness and the weight of it. Wanna save your CGPA? don't take this class!
This prof is up there with the bad ones, very unorganized, forgets to upload slides, so we have to email to remind him, unfair evaluation for simulation and does not care for students opinions, quizzes were not planned and hed forget that we had to do them, final was caught off guard no time and pretty hard, this class will bring down your GPA
The worst prof I have ever taken, but he is the only prof for gms522.
The simulation was incomprehensible, and the scoring was incomprehensible. The content of the exam has nothing to do with the lecture and requires a lot of reading. Test banks are useless. Don't try them. Even multiple-choice questions like to use long cases. The final exam has case, it's long, it's formatted but it doesn't have the right answer
Not the worst, but doesn't really care about his students. Midterm/exam were fairly difficult and a bit hard to prepare for, at least in my opinion. Make sure to find a good group for the simulation and try your best to do well in it as it's worth a lot. This class dropped my GPA like crazy so don't take this unless it's a requirement!
Worst professor in term of caring for and understanding student problem. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS MANDATORY. Wort person to be a professor
If someone told me to take this course with this professor, I would run away. FAST. This course is so confusing that I don't know anything, and I just completed this course LAST WEEK. He would explain something and have a "pop quiz" on stuff I had never heard before. AND YOU NEED TO FIND A GREAT GROUP (ITS 50%). OTHERWISE, YOU WILL FAIL.
Top 2 worst profs ever and he's not 2. Easily the worst professor I've ever had. Unless you hate your life do everything you can to avoid taking this guy's class. Absolute clown show
PUTA! Absolute worst professor at Ryerson. He does not understand. He does not give enough time for his online quizzes, so you have to rush, which can cost you your grade. His textbook is the worst. The text is a whirlwind, and nothing is straightforward in the book. He abandons his students in Chang.
If you must take the course, take GMS522 in person. His lectures are amazing. Professor is a good storyteller. He'll ask engagement questions to drive your interest. Yes, his tests may kill your GPA but his lectures are worth it. The key to success is to READ the book and LISTEN well in class. Also, make sure to get a good group.
If GMS522 is mandatory for your program, take this course in person. Professor is a good storyteller. His lectures are amazing. He'll ask engagement questions to drive your interest. Yes, his tests may kill your GPA but what you'll learn from this class is worth it. The key to success is to READ the book and LISTEN well in class.
Professor Farrell is an amazing prof; I did not have to study much for this class as most of it is common sense and overlaps from previous years. People that are quick to criticize are not paying attention to the simulation at all.
Abandons students in Chang. He's unfair. He needs to be fired.
Dr. Farrell gets a bad reputation from most, but in my opinion, if you show up to class, place top 15 in the simulation and pay attention you will do well. People do not like Dr. Farrell because he is a realist and uses his class to teach you how the real world operates.
Honestly, pass the course. He is exceptionally unreasonable and spiteful. His textbook is so bad Grammarly corrects it.
Unreasonable professor, tests, midterms and exams all give you 1 minute per question; more often than not, the questions will be a whole case giving you about 20 seconds to think and come up with an answer. With the simulation, which you must pay for, half the class WILL get a bad grade due to the professor's marking scheme. Non GMS Majors AVOID!
Doesn't make sense how he's still the only professor teaching this course. Slides aren't that helpful he bases his tests on his textbook, unannounced pop quizzes have nothing to do with what we learned. With the simulation the ta's don't really help you out you just have to figure it out on your own, they just give you a few videos to watch.
Most terrible teacher ever. DO NOT TAKE HIM, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Is not understanding and does not care if his students fail. Gives pop quizzes every week and should be fired!!!! Caused mental health problems and is not considerate AT ALL!
worst experience ever. i dont not normally submit a rating for a teacher but he deserves one. completely inconsiderate and stubborn. beware of pop quizes basically every week.
i've had a ton of bad profs but this one just tops them all. DO NOT!!! take this class if you don't need to. i can't stress that enough. dont know how he still has this job, he is so rude and inconsiderate. my mental health tanked this semester, not even because of the class itself, but because of HIM.
Hes o-k, just read the textbook and dont rely too much on the slides. Get a good group for the simulation because thats worth quite a bit. Just self study and you should be fine.
mid ngl
Racist and incredibly condescending professor, I am surprised he is still allowed to teach considering how infamous he is. Random pop quizzes, and he makes us buy his own textbook.
He's alright. The course isn't difficult, but he makes it a lot harder to get a good grade. Pop quizzes worth 20% total means you have to come to class. He makes you buy the textbook he wrote. I used it to study for the midterm but not the final and got relatively the same mark. Get a good group for the simulation, it requires a good amount of work
Prof. Farrell is a no BS professor. His lectures are simple & entertaining. You need to use the textbook as 40-50% of exam & midterm content will be there. You also need to attend class & keep up with content as there are 5 pop quizzes throughout the term. The group project is fine & your ranking affects the grade you get. Don't be lazy!
Course breakdown: pop quizzes, group assignment, midterm and final. Lectures are dry and you need to attend class to do the pop quizzes, really easy but can happen at the beginning or end of class. Make sure you have a good group for the assignment as its a good chunk of your grade. Multiple choice midterm and exam.
Absolutely terrible.
Honestly, NOT as bad as reviews make him seem online; easy tests and simulation is easy.
ratings say it all
The prof isn't the best choice if you are looking for a good GPA in the subject. He is kinda self centred and you will have pop quizzes half the semester and this course has a simulation that is just a total waste cause its not getting you better marks In the subject it only weighs 10-15% of weight in your grade.
Total disaster
You can't avoid this prof because he's the only one who teaches gms522 and he's head of the dept. He gives pop quizzes and their hard asf. The simulation will save your grade. He doesn't even teach; he just reads his 100 year old slides. You get 1 hour to answer 60 mc on midterm. 2 hours for 200 mc on final. no crib sheet for either. everyone fails
This course is A LOT so don't fall behind with the modules/readings. The simulation isn't bad, but the report and presentation are graded harshly (class average in the 60s) and only one week is provided to complete them. The quizzes and exams are easy, but you have to thoroughly study the modules and textbook as it's about one minute per question.
The professor is a bit unorthodox, but his simulation assignments are really helpful. Staying on top of the pop quizzes and using unstuck ai for study prep can make this class manageable.
Lost a friend of mine's quiz and gaslit her into thinking she had lost it, I was present when she submitted it, had to go to the chair so she could retake it. He's very full of himself, argues over email and intimidates students. Midterm was 60 question in 60 minutes and pop quizzes are 15 for 15 mins, also takes forever to hand quiz grades back.
This prof is only in it for the money, he couldn't care less about being a good prof, does not care about students, and everything is his way or no way. Admits to getting a cut from the simulation, which is why he makes everyone buy it instead of one per group. He's tenured, so the school won't get rid of him, and ofc he wrote the textbook too!
DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM. There are pop quizzes throughout the semester so you have to attend class. I missed one because I was working and he said he can't shift the weight to the final because its not a valid reason to miss a lecture????? He gives absolutely no instructions for the simulation and it is a free for all. Course is just a money grab
He basically forces us to buy his 15-year-old textbook if we want good grades, and it costs $80 plus the $60 simulation. Not to mention how he is a tough grader.
Save your time and money, choose another prof
Prof does not respond to emails. Textbook is written by himself and classes do not accurately reflect content that is tested. Lots of self learning in his classes and there are pop quizzes. In what way does making quizzes a surprise help with a students learning rather than just telling them it will be weekly/bi-weekly?
He's the only professor for gms522, he gives out surprise quizzes and its structured in a way which im not sure how it helps with learning. overall, tough professor.
The professor gets a kickback from this awful simulation he will make you do, where the results are randomized, and you could potentially get a failing grade due to circumstances out of your hands. Pop Quizzes are scattered throughout the course and are graded harshly. The midterm and Final have long, meaningless questions with little time to do.
As much as you should avoid this prof, you can't—he's the only one for this course. He forces you to buy his own textbook, and it's useless. Pop quizzes in the last 15–20 min. Midterm/final don't match slides or lectures; questions are half-page paragraphs. Final: 120 MC in 120 min—you spend more time reading the questions than answering.
This course is a mess. Lectures and textbook useless and add no value. Pop quizzes are random and stressful. Exams are unnecessarily hard, with long paragraphs, not enough time, and don't reflect what's taught. Avoid this class if possible—but if you have no choice, be prepared for constant stress and disappointment.
Pop quizzes randomly during lectures who does one after a mid term and midterm and finals are crazy long 1 hour for mid term and 2 hours for final questions aren't straightforward all situational based long paragraphs of context insane
Don't even bother reading the textbook.
