She is a great Prof. If you ever need help with anything just go talk to her. She will help you out. Sometimes in class she gets kind of confusing but go see her and she will help you understand the things, like most profs she does not want you to fail.
She is a great prof. Your all probably too lazy to appreciate the level of teaching she puts into her lectures. Listen to me. This is a good prof.
One of the best profs I had at SMU. If you do the reading and aren't scared of participating in class, it's a really interesting class. She sometimes had trouble getting people to talk but, she's really helpful and wants people to do well.
shes unclear. tests are hard.
I agree, she seems to like students to do well, but doesnt always help them out with that, sometimes makes things more complicated then necessary and gets really defensive if you question her about something. Prettty typical of the ''english types'' i've had so far through high school and university. go to class and ask questions.
Absolutely terrible.i am a b+ average student and i barely pulled off a D in her class. There are no slides, no overheads, nothing. You have to sit there and listen to her talk for an hour and fifteen minutes straight...impossible to hear everything she says and note it all at the same time.tests are also BRUTAL!Serioulsy, stay away from this prof!!!
What should be easy material to learn is made unnecessarily difficult to grasp by this prof. No pdrive notes, no handouts, no overheads, no powerpoints. Syllabus lacked imp. info, like exam dates! Tests: 4 or 5 questions, mess up one and your looking at a B-, but thats a guess, didnt recieve a marking key either. Think twice before taking this prof
This class isn't really easy but the prof will help you out if you go see her or ask questions in class. It takes the use of your brain to get a good grade and it is a fun course. Super nice prof.
Her courses are logic oriented. If your not a logic person you will hate this course and her. she can get confusing but is one of the nicest profs i've ever had. If you want an EASY mark take her class and just participate say something here and there and she'll love you. She loves to help and answer questions and its a good way to waste class time
I know she doesn't want her students to fail, but to make this possible she should use powerpoints, hand outs, and maybe even a projector...I need notes to understand! I would stay away from this class if you don't want to have to teach yourself.
When I signed up for this class, it was full. Now people are scrambling to drop it before the time limit purely because of her teaching style, or lack therefore of. Nice woman, very friendly, but she is as easy to understand as the philosophers she attempts to teach.
when she is asked a question she doesn't really clarify it with a good answer. She interrupts students when making a question/comment. She is really fair marker
first off, her accent and things like this shouldnt even be concerns, shame on you students for even being so petty!!! if you are not ready to truly learn philosophy and do not enjoy discussing with groups no you will not do well, but as for carmel i found her to be an excellent ambassador to introductory philosophy. man i cant believesome people!
I absolutely adore this woman. It was an 8:30 class so it was brutal in the first place but she manages to keep it interesting. She truly cares about her students and I got a good grade with little effort. I would recommend going to class though.
Carmel is one of the nicest professors I've had in this university; but, she can be rather vague on what she expects for her seminar presentations, and can take quite a while to get back to people via e-mail. Regardless of that, at least as far as her seminar classes go, you can do well in her class as long as you put effort into your analysis.
Shes very sweet and a nice woman, so you will like her for that reason but the class is not very interesting, and she is not a teacher to explain herself or answer your questions clear.
This Prof is such a nice lady, however she is hard to understand. She will provide help in her office hours, but even with her help what she wants in an essay is unclear. Overall intresting class, a lot of studying, and researching things on your own because she leaves them unexplained.
The only reason I pass my assignments/tests is because of common sense, not her teaching. Whenever she asks questions they are really vague and hard to answer. Overall a really boring, pointless class.
This was my first phil class. Forde is an amazing prof to have if you like a fast paced environment, if you need to have things explained to you step by step, perhaps forde is not the best for you. She keeps classes interesting by doing in class discussions. I will say her smaller classes are better than her larger ones. Also a very fair marker.
Very nice, friendly prof. Marks fair enough. BUT, talk the whole time you write tests/quizzes, which is horribly distracting. half our class did terrible. She is the only one right, very critical of anyone else's opinions or statements. I enjoy the material in general, good lectures, tad dry, but it's hard, and her style makes it harder I find
Horrible prof. She hates to be wrong (she usually is) can't take a debate (the point of the class) she does not give you the right information for the quizzes and exams. I do not know how she obtained her degree.
She is one, if not the worst teacher I have ever had! She does not put any necessary information on her powerpoints and the textbook is less than useless. Her tests are ridiculous and basically require a photographic memory of the most insignificant topics covered in class. I honestly do not believe she knows anything about CRITICAL THINKING. Awful
Worst prof I've ever had. Boring, dry, rude ( very ) and ignorant. Do not take her classes. I get so frustrated by her I walk out of almost all classes.
Go to class and pay attention and you won't have to read the book. study the slides and notes you take in class and you should be fine. She can be a bit rude/cranky when proven wrong or if you don't agree with her.
She is probably the worst prof i've ever had. She interupts her students when called upon to answer one of her pointless questions. Very rude and doesn't make it clear on what she's trying to teach. Avoid her if possible
I was one of the few who regularly attended class, participated and did the readings. A lot of the other students were just plain rude to Dr. Forde in my opinion. Go to class, do the readings and participate. If you disagree with her position be prepared to back it up with facts and evidence. Not simply "what you heard".
Her powerpoint slides are virtually useless. Her lectures are extremely sporadic and vague. The readings are alright but if you are at all confused by them, don't expect her to help in clearing them up. On top of this, the tests do not accurately reflect what has been covered in the course anyway so basically you have to BS and luck your way throug
Welcome to Common Sense 101! This class is the furthest thing from a philosophy class you could take. Forde is unhelpful and self-righteous, interrupts students, and shuts down free flowing thought. Lectures are repetitive and useless, powerpoint slides are virtually pointless. Quizzes are never announced and poor AVOID THIS PROF IF AT ALL POSSIBLE
This professor is the most useless person I have met at SMU. Can not speak clearly. Does not know what she is doing most of the time and is mean when she doesnt get her way. Boring class, makes me want to shoot myself every time. Please make her retire.
Absolutely awful. This class was very boring. The professor is very unhelpful and does not know how to teach.
Worst prof I've ever had. Useless power-points and class work. Unclear explanations. If you have a different opinion than hers you might as well keep it to yourself. She interrupts and does not answer your questions well at all. I don't know how she is still aloud to teach. Do NOT take a course with her if you don't have to.
Dr. Forde is by far in my four years at Saint Mary's and one year at STFX the worst prof I have ever had. Her explanations are unclear and her demeanor is argumentative if your opinion differs from her own. Her marking is inconsistent and testing does not reflect the outcomes of the course. DO NOT take her classes!
She was really nice to me but syllabus unclear, random new readings videos always posted on blackboard examples didn't always connect with concepts in class marking erratic
Ms. Forde is a good teacher just a hard nut to crack. I like it when she dismisses students who ask silly, irrelevant questions that are not related to the topic at hand. She seems to like to give me B+. 4 courses and I could only muster one A-. overall she is not bad. classes can be fun at times.
Great Prof
I absolutely love Carmel. I hated this 2.5hrs night class up until she took over in the second semester. She somehow managed to keep my interest the whole length of those class and I am now taking more ethics courses within philosophy because of her. Lots of class discussions, so do your readings so you know what you're talking about.
Dr. Forde was engaging, accepted differing (well reasoned) perspectives, and was lively while teaching this course. By preferring electronically submitted assignments, she earns an extra point each from me for efficiency and resource management.
I have taken Dr. Forde for more than one course and she is a great Professor who is always willing to help her students. I recommend her!
Very bland lectures. Found it difficult to stay engaged in class. I also found her to be kind of rude to some of her students.
Extremely condescending, rude, and angry. Terrible terrible personality, awkward, weird, and creepy. Uses her marks for taking out her anger at the world I read the text and wrote 500 words (assignment 1), since MY opinion was invalid I was graded 30%, and corrected on irrelevant spelling etc (RUDELY)She also told me I don't know how to write.
easy concepts explained in the most confusing way imaginable
Very interesting lectures which makes it easy to pay attention and her lectures directly coincide with the assigned readings. She gives surprise assessments so attendance is important. She is the hardest marker I have yet to come across at SMU so be careful as this course could be detrimental to your GPA.
Taught only from text, toughest marker I have had. Poor explanations.
Worst Prof ever. Was really hard with marking and couldn't seem to explain the work.
She is very unorganized, she marks hard. She isn't precise in what she want. Her lecture slides are veg and have minimum of info in it. Sometimes for the quiz she says it on one thing but decides to base it off of the material taught in the lecture that day. IF YOU LIKE YOUR GPA, DON'T TAKE CLASS WITH HER. Worst prof in smu! AVOID
Rude towards students, doesnt have a clear way of teaching. She does not clear up any concepts you dont understand. Your thoughts should not differ from her own, they would automatically be wrong. She is boring and unorganized. Test does not relate to course material. Her class is nothing i thought it would be like. AVOID and SAVE YOUR GRADE!!
first things first just save yourself the suffering and bad grade by not taking a class with this proff ever. biggest mistake in my 2 years of uni. extremely rude, doesn't reply to emails and won't even answer a question at the end of class. calls individuals out. tests are awful along with quizzes. she goes way fast. most boring class ever.
DO NOT ENGAGE. She marks based on her opinion (i.e; if you're not vegan, expect a 10-25% deduction on all assignments). Her PowerPoints make little to no sense, she's beyond rude in emails and written feedback and marks very inconsistently (If two people chose the same answer on a MP question, one would be marked wrong). AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I only went to three of this professor's classes for a reason. She spoke in the most ambiguous way possible and never clarified things. Further, she did not know how to handle students that were disruptive and contributed to the tension in a class I took on continental philosophy. I dropped her course very quickly for this reason. Don't take her.
Doesnt explain what we are learning well, she assumes that we know what shes talking about and gets mad when you ask questions, why didnt you read the textbook! She refuses to answer question. Outside of the class she is a very sweet lady when your talking to her one on one and gives better explainations for questions we ask.
Just a horrible professor. Very disrespectful
Dr. Forde is the most unorganized professor I have ever met in my 5 years at SMU. She has TONS of grammatical issues in all her handouts, powerpoints, and tests. She is horrible at wording things, which makes it extremely confusing on the tests. She talks so much that she barely covers any course content yet puts so much on the exam.
This prof does not help students when they ask questions. Example: a students recently asked a question on a particular unit, the prof then answered "Don't ask that question, we go over this every day, you need to understand this". She makes the students feel as though our questions are pointless/redundant. Do NOT take this course unless needed.
Worse Prof I've had at SMU. Rude and disrespectful with her marking, only does powerpoints, and never emails students back when they ask questions. She expects you to already have a Doctorate level of understanding coming into this second-year course. Expect to only pay attention to her course because that's how much she expects from you.
Is slow and harsh with grading, doesn't post class info or exam times until last second, rarely responds to emails, if she does, doesnt answer questions properly
Caramel did not pass the vibe check. She makes literally no sense and is not helpful one bit. She'll ghost your emails if she doesn't want to respond anymore. Really really bad at explaining in her lectures. I've had people just beef with her because of how confusing she is. My friend and I dropped her course and we've never felt more free and joy
Dr. Forde is disrespectful, unprofessional and unhelpful. Her lectures and PowerPoints do not make sense, she does mot provide adequate feedback on tests and quizzes so you have no idea what you did wrong or how to fix it. If you dont understand a concept she is rude in explanation. She marks way too hard for the course. AVOID HER.
she's a rude teacher who doesn't care about her students. She is disrespectful and unprofessional and does not deserve to teach
Dr. Forde is not a good professor by any means. She is vague and gives derogatory answers to questions. Not a fan of answering emails either. She has awful grammar, lower case letters at the start of sentences, questions in the wrong order and typos on every other word. If she does not read over anything before posting, I wouldn't be surprised.
She's very rude and if you ask a question prepare to be degraded and make sure to have a tough skin she doesn't not care about the students just her position. She will not help at all and if you ask her to clarify herself she blames your misunderstanding on the student instead not listening , when her teaching contradicts itself.
Carmel Forde is the worst professor I have ever had. She speaks her mind and will definitely call you stupid with no hesitation. She has ghosted my emails all semester, she simply cannot teach and does not want to help at all. She has said to my class MULTIPLE times to not email her to ask questions. Avoid Carmel at all costs, no credit is worth it
Toughest professor I've ever had, super hard grader, almost impossible to get a good mark.
Encourages questions yet shuts down students when they ask. Very rude & unprofessional. Not sure how she is in person, but she's unorganized online.
CONSTANTLY contradicts herself, says one thing in class and when we are tested on it, it is magically is no longer true. Quizzes us on things she has never taught. I think the sole reason why she was put on this earth was to take away my scholarship. I can't believe I paid two terms worth of money to take her class. Avoid if you value your sanity.
Incredibly rude and disrespectful. Because of COVID-19 this class is online; I've walked out of several of her classes because I was so blown away by how rude she is to students. Additionally, I don't feel she teaches this subject well/she doesn't explain topics well. Cannot recommend this prof less, she's awful.
Dr. Forde's ratings on here are very emotionally fuelled. She is a fine professor who can at times be a little vague, but overall explains everything adequately. She asked her class nice questions like and what their holiday plans were, overall polite. Maybe I'm a little empathetic but I don't think her rating on here reflects her as a professor.
Just dont do it, you will thank me later.
she was very rude when it came to not understanding the work and concepts she would degrade students in the class. she did not communicate with the tutors on what we were going over. her tests are long and difficult and she made many spelling errors on the test and would be angry if you asked about them as well as posting tests 4 hours late
horrible professor. she doesn't explain things well at all and degrades all students that don't understand or ask for help. don't take this class
I would disagree with a lot of the comments on here. I haven't experienced a rude or degrading side of prof Forde. I would say she explains the material overall pretty well but the course is very lecture-heavy and overall not interesting. I would avoid this course if I could choose again.
This prof is so vague in her lectures, that I am not sure if she even knows what she is teaching. My class sure doesn't! Not a single one of us understands what is going on, or what we are supposed to be learning. STEER CLEAR OF THIS PROF! Don't do this to yourself, honestly.
This class was extremely difficult and the prof was not good at giving feedback, her lectures were very confusing and she never offered to reexplain or help her students. would not recommend if you are just trying to get an extra credit/not mandatory.
Dr. Forde, while she knew what she was talking about, gave the appearance of someone who felt they were too good for us. The course material was very poorly organized and she did not proofread her tests, which caused confusion on occasion. She also made snide remarks to people for asking questions, and was just not a pleasant person to be around.
Her tests are difficult and she puts no thought or preparation in for her classes, there is no way to prepare for tests because her powerpoints don't make any sense. She is always making grammar mistakes or asking us how to spell words, when she talks she loses her train of thought and when you ask a question she won't answer it. Do not recommend!!
I've never experienced any rude behaviour from Prof Forde. She is a nice person but just does not explain the material very well. Her slides are very confusing and she doesn't make the outcomes clear. She is a tough grader and doesn't give very helpful feedback. She has tried to help me when I've gone to her but I tend to end up even more confused.
If you value good grades, do not take this class. If you appreciate professors that get to the point, are kind to students and grade things clearly, do not take this class. You will be degraded and confused more than anything else. Stay far away if you value your sanity. Do not take anything from this professor.
If ur trying to decide if you want to take this class don't. The material doesn't make any sense coming from her mouth, her powerpoints are a mess and half the time she has no idea what she is saying. She grades way too harsh and expects it to be perfect. She thinks she is the best and will call you stupid if you make a joke or ask a question.
Professor Forde is a terrible teacher. Her slides make no sense and she expects all students to understand everything right away. Make sure you never ask her a question or she'll call you stupid in front of the whole class. She made me feel so worthless. Her powerpoints are a complete mess and she simply doesn't care about any student. Stear clear.
There are not many materials to study outside of class which made things in the beginning tough. I needed to use Dr. Forde's office hours and tutors to help me grasp the ideas but once I did the rest came pretty easy. This is a tough course for many. I did well but avoid if possible. Many students dropped. Not worth the stress. Attend class!
Prof Forde was one of the worst profs I've had. She was a nice person, I didn't have any rude experiences with her and never witnessed her being rude to other students but she just wasn't a good prof. Her material was SO confusing and asking for clarification just made me more confused. Never knew what to expect on tests! Do not recommend!!!
This class was a complete and utter mess. Her slides are a train wreck, and she clearly puts no effort into her 'lectures' or tests. The feedback you receive is useless, as she would often just cross out stuff I wrote and write "No!" or "Wrong!" with no explanation as to why. Do yourself a favour and DO NOT take her class.
Very passive aggressive prof who makes you feel dumb if you answer a question wrong. She is not very helpful and the lectures and slideshows are confusing and not that helpful. If you have the ability to take another prof I highly reccomend that, if not then honestly take 2 science or math courses.
tbh after the marks for the first test I was totally going to drop it but going to her office and discussing test marks with her is the best thing you could do in class really plus going to lectures they're mostly just discussing the topics and the test comes directly from it participation points are just talking and sharing your opinion in lecture
This course was full-year yet I don't feel like I learned a single thing. Lectures were confusing and vague, and powerpoints didn't make sense. Dr Forde was quite passive-aggressive as well. If I could go back in time I'd have dropped this on the first day, or taken the course with a different prof which is what I'd advise you to do.
This was the worst class ever. I am interested in philosophy outside of the classroom but this was the most brain-rotting content to learn about. Forde is extremely passive-aggressive with her students and when asked a question you're met with disrespect. Her feedback is also not readable. If you wish to keep your sanity you wont take this course.
Her lectures are redundant and it seems as if no matter how much you study, you will still manage to barely get a passing grade. BEWARE
Misunderstood. I didn't witness any rudeness from prof Forde. I believe she is just a bit stern and has a dry sense of humor. I didn't do well on the first test but after taking the time to understand what she was looking for I did well. Attending class matters and she is a very tough grader. If you don't want to put in effort don't take her class.
Like many mentioned, not a good prof. While I don't believe she is intentionally rude, she does have a certain way of delivering answers that make you feel dumber than before, in a manner that suggests she doesn't care about you. She tends to go in circles - her answers being quite vague. Overall the topics are confusing, AVOID THIS CLASS.
Absolutely amazing would take a class with her every sem until grad.
every time you speak she says you are wrong. She graded the midterms as if we had been writing philosophy our entire lives. (we had never done a written assignment before). if she could get a negative score I would give it. wasn't the course I marked it as The course I'm in just wasn't on the list.
