amazing professor!
She is confusing. Really fun class but unfair graiding.Passed all tests and had all homeworks, have no idea why she took off points. Pay attention, don't miss any classes and submit all works - she counts them.
shes an unfair grader. she picks and chooses who she wants 2 tourment each semester. u can write 2 long paragraphs in a paper ab sumtin n she'll tell u ELABORATE but u have 2 move on wit the paper. the class is kinda fun but who makes u rewrite a rewrite&
confusing grading policy...one minute she will want you to elaborate on something and not be too general and then she will want you to get to the point of the essay. however, the class discussions were interesting-well, for the most part.
Her grading sucks! Very unclear...writes a whole new essay on top of yours, never satisfied with any works submitted unless you share her point of view ! Found the class completely useless, thanks for DEcreasing my interest in the subject!
Had her a year ago. Her class was easy. It was annoying due to all the "tree hugging" kind of talk due mostly to the types of students in the class but it was still an easy A
The class was pretty interesting. She likes a lot of participation. The only problem I had with her was her grading policy. I rewrote my play paper 3 times and when I finally go to talk to her I find out she made the mistae all a long becuase I had the right information... she just misread.
holy****, this woman is one of the people that pushed me over the edge with hunter. ****ing horrible. worst professor ever. unfair grading policies, unclear at that. her class was filled with so much **** discussing of who even knows what! women's studies my ass, thank god i dropped that class.
If you enjoy acting you will love this class. If you want to learn about womst you will loathe this class. Lot's of touchy-feely tree hugging stuff with mandatory improv acting by students n every class. This is my worst class at Hunter. I haven't learned a thing. Grading is ambiguous at best.
Unclear about what she wants in papers. Think you have written a good essay? Think again. Unclear grading system. Weird theater exercises before each class. Mandatory "women's" play to be seen outside of class. Should be a theater appreciation class, not women's studies. Very disappointing. :(
The Intro to Women's Studies covers the politics of being not only a woman but "another" in our Eurocentric/white/male dominated society. One of the greatest classes I've taken at Hunter!
I had Prof. Cartei for Popular Theatre in Latin American and for Italian 201. She is not at all a bad teacher, just different. She has a different style of teaching, which go with her views on education. I think they are quite interesting and prove well to those who are open to a different learning environment. She is also the nicest woman ever
she is dufferent, she doest listen to people with other opinion and discriminate students she doesnt like. women studies suppose to be a class of excepting one another differences, well she doesnt follow it
I love prof Cartei!! Im a freshman and her class is by far my favorite. She likes loud and opinionated people, but i did notice her dislike for people who disagree with her. A bit of advice: don't ever say that a woman's place is in a home. A kid almost got his head bitten off for that. Great prof overall!!
I loved this class but Cartei does demand ALOT of class particip. so speak up so u wont drown in a sea of faces. She is not clear in what she wants in papers and will make even the best writers rewrite thier 2 page responses!Response paper are based on performances by women to be seen ouside of class and final is based on the readings.Overall ok :(
Feminist classic thought. Brought in theatre pieces into class, very spontanious and great reading
She is somewhat clear. She makes her class very interesting though. I would recommend her, she kept my attention for the semester.
Class based on student discussion, write everything people said on board, not really teaching anything. Grading not clear. She takes attendance. Feel like talking crap in the class. But if you are opinionated and likes to speak out in class, go ahead. Crappy Class!
Exceptional teacher, makes you think, not just write, but think and develop your own opionions through class discussions and papers. Its a good place to learn to speak up in classes and develop an interesting mature enviornment
most annoying professor ive ever come in contact with. Her material didnt even represent what the hell the class was about. she needs a new job because her teaching career isnt working for her...
Crappy teacher. Unclear on assignments. Doesn't teach anything useful or relevant to the class topics. Turned a women's studies class into a poly/sci class. Easy because of no tests but you'll have to do a lot of papers. Avoid at all costs, find someone more interesting.

You just have to repeate exactly what she says, theres really not much thinking that has to go into the class. Only papers and im pretty sure she doesnt really read them either.
A nice woman and very interesting essays for reading. Short writing assignment due every class- easily graded. Very enthusiastic about teaching. Material focused on race, ethnicity, and class in its relation to women rather than strictly women's studies (nearly all readings about minority women).

She is a great professor. She is very organized. she goes by everything she says in the syllabus and will let you know way in adavance if there is a change. She is also very sweet and understanding. I look forward to taking her again.

She is very nice...but also very demanding... you need to submit a journal for every class and there is quite a lot of reading...she explains great though, and uses great examples...
She was the worst professor Ive ever had. I totally felt that I needed to get my tuition back for her class. "I was as ignorant as I was before I took her class." I felt like I was in a big discussion club without a leader (which is free). If I were you, I would not take her class. (I was a GPA 4.0 student until I had her.)
One of the worst professors that I had. Do not take this class, I repeat again, do not take this class because for this supposed to be easy class we had to do 4 essays(4-5 pages), read chapters for each class and go to some feminist boring events.I consider myself an A student but this class was horrible.
Good professor. The topic was defintely interesting. HARD GRADER! I got B's until the last two papers... don't expect to go in there and breeze through it. She isn't from America so sometimes shes a little looney, but overall really good professor and pretty nice. GO TO CLASS BECAUSE IT HELPS WITH THE PAPERS ALOT!
I am curious as to the students who are leaving these reviews. All you have to do is read the assigned readings, attend class, complete the assigned 5 essays (which really isn't a lot for 4 months) and participate in class discussions. I found her humor incredibly refreshing in an age where teachers are so serious. I give her an A.
her grading policy is very bazzar as well as the way she teaches. you may think you answered the quiz questions correct or wrote a good paper, but its not good enough for her. her grading is inconsistant and frustrating.
she is impossible to comprehend. lot of reading. in the 1st class she was making fun of papers her student wrote during the previous semester. that means she will laugh at us with her next students. she encourages critical thinking, yet preaches her own views. i dropped the class because i wasn't going to risk my 4.0 GPA. try to avoid her.
Really great class. She is such a pleasant person. Always smiling and excited over the material. Very generous with time and grading. Very enjoyable plays. Engages the class. Never a boring day with her. Please take her class. You won't regret it. She is openminded and adorable.
The class material is a bit dry at times and uninteresting, but she is a good teacher. She seems tough at first but she is actually really nice and makes an effort to help. Large reading load though, in class group projects were a lot of fun. Very big on participation and analytical thinking.
she seems very tough at first but when u get to know her she's really nice, attendance is mandatory and u will get ALOT of reading and hw, participate in class and u should do fine. at times the material may seem difficult so its important to really try and understand the material.
I really enjoy her class. We all talk and share our opinion. She is not the typical "feminist." She is very open minded and does not hate man :). There is a lot of reading but if you keep up its not that bad. Does not give finals..yey. Really sweet woman.
She's just great, very help, alwasy excited about the material. She makes the class interesting. Only problem is that this class isn't writing intesive course, but she treats it as one.
First off, if u hate talking in class, participating, or antisocial- DONT TAKE HER! Major group work-students run the class not her. A major chunk of your grade deals with that. There are no finals, but a journal due every day with excessive reading. She's a hard grader when it comes to papers.
This class is big on participation, and C. Cartei likes to hear from everyone. Generally there's some reading & a 1 page journal assigned for every class. It is enjoyable material for the most part, and class discussions are almost always interesting. Very engaging professor who is both energetic and knowledgable. Do your part, & you'll love it!
Maybe I expect more than most, but I didn't feel the reading was too much with the exception of the last 2 wks when we read an entire 120pg book. I never had difficulty writing for her, and her "tough grading" means if you copy paste/regurgitate the reading, you won't get a +. BIG suprise, this is college NOT high school. Good Prof, great class.
impossible grader. she asks for one page responses to readings then rips them apart. if you dont say exactly what she wants, you wont do well. do NOT take her class.
Impossible grader. Never gives any positive feedback to anyone!Always has to be what SHE thinks is the right answer.Email her to ask her questions and she completely ignores it and tells you to ask her when u see her...not too approachable either.
I enjoyed this class -- the discussions were always interesting. However, the workload (in my opinion) is a bit much for a 100-level course. The professor is nice and always energetic, but very demanding with the papers/journals she assigns. I would recommend the class, nonetheless.
she requires a lot from students. there are totally about 18 journals for each class about each reading. 3-4 quizzes with questions and need to be good answers, exams are almost about the quizzes in short essay form. need to good in critical thinking skills. I felt too much work and concern, not recommended.
Sweet lady, fun and energetic. Her accent is a bit heavy and the main problem with the class is that there is a writing assignment due practically every day. She doesn't seem to understand that this is not a writing intensive course. Nonetheless, she is not a bad professor. This class will be great for you if you love participating.
This class was not difficult: one or more short readigs assigned for most classes, and then one double-spaced page "journal" written response to reading comprehension questions. I mainly wish that she would provide most structure for the class discussions, which are student-driven and often got very ramble-y, and that she wasn't so down on CUNY.
Shes terrible both as an italian prof and wmns studies prof. I speak italian fluently and her vocab is terrible for native and more imp for a college prof.she gives in class work that you would do in kindergarten (oak tag and markers to draw almot every class) and that dont do anything to contribute to the class. Lowest grade a 96 she gave me a B
She was AWFUL. If you think coloring with crayons every class is a good way to spend your tuition, go with her. If you value your education, do not. I'm not against creativity, but I am against wasting my time and money when I should be learning something. She perfect for loud-mouthed suck ups, though.
hard hard hard grader, writes more comments paper than the actually paper, although sometimes energetic, sometimes fun with those activities, the grading of journals is ridicules
She's intense! Only cause she's an activist and truly believes in the stuff she teaches. Yes, there are journals due for every class..but she asks us very clear questions, not too hard. I loved her, she really opened my eyes to the world of womens studies, extremely helpful and if you participate you'll do good.
There's really too much work that goes into this class. Too many journals, more even than my W classes and this isn't even a W class. The term paper is easy and short though and instead of a final or midterm we just had three quizzes which were really easy so it evens out.
Great wgs prof. But I can y some ppl may find her hard.... She may be too theoretical n analytical for a100 level class.... But if u understand basic issues of wgs tAke her....very passionate n understanding woman
hard grader! readings take up your time. she doesnt care about personal views. she expects the weekly paper to be written according to her rules and not being creative. she tries to make the lectures interesting. but hummm they arent!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! She grades unfairly and picks and chooses favorites! One of the worst professors ever in Hunter. I dont know why she still continues to teach. Stay away from her class if possible
Intense teacher. She opened my mind to a lot of new things, although she was strict on making sure you've done the readings. There was a journal entry for every class and leaves great feedback.
Consecutive extensive readings (4.5h), followed by a journal (she corrects every single word that you write), extremely high expectations for a 100 level class. Most times she is superficial on explaining certain terms/concepts and then she wants you to write critically...The textbook isn't very helpful either, mostly stories...:(
For 200.72, or feminist theatre, she had us write journals every week. She corrects your journal in kind of an unfair way, since she makes everything phrased the way she wants it to be. kind of a disorganized class, she expected group discussion w/out raising hands and calling on ppl for half the semester which made it tough to participate.
PLEASE avoid this class if possible. I never got less than 95 in her lass but still got a B. there is ALOT of reading and daily 1 page journals. She is a closes minded feminist who does not care about your opinion, its her way or no way. Would never reccomend!
Journals due every class. She will rephrase all of your journals and claim you didn't understand. It is her way or you're wrong.
In order to do well in the class, do all the readings, do journals due every class and she likes class participation. Very theoretical for a 100 level class. If you can do all this. I recommend taking the class
This woman is the most close minded and narrow person I have ever met. I received a terrible grade in this course simply because I gave a few of my black feminist thoughts in class. Avoid her class. She is unhelpful and will simply shut you down, even if you are saying exactly what the text is. She has made me hate the WGS department as a whole!
TOO many writing assignments for a non-writing intensive class. And she grades everything you write based on her own opinion literally all my journals were rewritten in red pen AND she grades pretty harshly on tests (and journals) based on, of course, her own opinion. It's her way or no way. Class was a little interesting though I guess.
The worst professor I've had at Hunter. This is an intro class (a req for nearly everyone at Hunter not just WGS majors) and yet she slaughters you if you don't understand the material, or say something 'wrong'. Long readings for every single class and she expects 1 written page for each which she covers in red. Tests are equally ridiculous.
Prf. Cartei is a tough professor but you will learn with her! She makes you work but this class and the way she conducts the lecture opens your eyes to so many different social issues that we may be blind to
Fun class. Learned a lot. Not sure why this isn't a writing intensive class; there is so much reading and writing. She's a great Prof!
took her for feminist theater. makes you read all kinds of obscure nonsense, write 2-3p papers every week, and criticizes you for not analyzing it in the way she wants you to despite little to no instruction. she didn't give us a single grade all semester, just checks, so you had no way of knowing where you stood either. avoid at all costs.
This is definitely not a class that you can hide out in the back and expect to get an A. Participation is the most important thing but the discussions are interesting and I learned a lot. However, the readings are extremely long and she is really nit picky with how she grades the journals
GET READY TO READ FOREVER! GET READY TO HAVE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS BASICALLY REWRITTEN FOR YOU! The concepts for the class are interesting and discussions went by smoothly, but this professor could've honestly made the learning experience way better.
Get ready to have a written essay on your essay!!!!!
started the class as an advocate of feminism, now I really don't think I am. this class has so much potential but this class was the worst class I have taken. IMMENSE amounts of reading, and the grading is irrational...
Prof. Cartei is misunderstood, she gives a lot of feedback because she is passionate about the material and wants you to learn. She wasn't a tough grader, just very detail-oriented. If you make some effort, talk in class and speak to her about any of your problems, she is actually a very understanding and caring person.
alot of dense reading
the worst teacher I've ever taken. not even trying to drag it but she's terrible and has favorites. if you're not constantly participating, you'll never receive an A no matter the test scores. she's a very harsh grader. plus too many assignments and around like 100 readings. Gives very low grades on tests. Class ave was about 50.
She's immensely passionate and engaging. If you don't understand something, she breaks it down for you, whether during office hours or in class. If you're not interested in gender and sexuality studies, or you don't want to read, this isn't the class for you. it isn't an easy pass or fail. If you put in the effort, you'll be fine.
Lots of reading and writing; the feedback is long but helpful. She expects a high level of writing and can help you grow. Prof is specific with what she wants, if you listen and participate you'll be fine, she makes many interesting points. But she can also be very opinionated, has to have the last word. Really cool lady overall, I learned a lot!
She is the worst professor Ive ever had and a hard grader.
For a 100 level class, it's pretty tough and she often gives page long writing assignments that are toughly graded. There is a lot of reading and writing, but it was definitely a lot more light after the sudden transition to remote.
Lots of readings and responses. Very knowledgable and kind. Has a tendency to ramble off-topic and not computer savvy, but a great teacher for any WGS course. Introduced very interesting readings from a variety of sources providing a well-rounded and international view of human rights and gender relations.
A lot of reading and writing. Had to have a camera on for zoom meetings. The way she grades is kind of confusing. Some of the material that we used felt a bit outdated. The discussions can be interesting. She curves up your grade at the end. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to read and write alot.
You will actually learn something from all of the readings.
A really REALLY tough grader. You ought to know and write EXACTLY what she wants to hear. Other than that, she really does care about the health and wellbeing of her students. A great person, but I don't know that I'd take the class a second time.
Tend to go off topic a lot and rambles. Hard on students. Not clear on grading criteria tend to switch a lot and end up harming students grades. Essay instructions arent clear at all.
for a 100 course there was so much! there was a group project/ facilitation that required you to lead a class discussion! There are pop quizzes on the readings so look out for that! A lot of discussion boards! Final was a 20 point exam that was selected authors from the entire semester and one section was an essay RUN
This teacher is racists, she doesn't know what it is coming out her own mouth. She tends to go off topic a lot and rambles every day. Her instruction isn't clear and has no guidelines. She isn't educated on current topics and doesn't know how to grade and follow her own instructions. She lies daily to students faces about gradings and assignments.
She is a very kind and understanding teacher. beware there are a lot of reading and she will give a pop quiz if she feels like the class is not reading the material. Very tough on grading. if you dont write how she wants she wll take points off. But she did let us redo part of midterm.
She's nice but it's too many reading/writing assignments for a non writing-intensive 100 level class. She's inconsiderate about the workload and a tough grader. Also, there's a group facilitation in which you will have to lead a class discussion and there's also several quizzes throughout the semester. Attendance and participation are mandatory.
I took her "Feminist Theatre" classes, and she's one of the most engaging professors I've had in Hunter college. I agree that her class is heavy on the reading and homework part, but once you do it, you really get an actual deeper understanding of the topic.
Worst teacher ever. Forces you to think one way about things and freedom on thought is limited. Wants you to fail. And treats adults like children
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! DO NOT TAKE. Grades wayy to strictly, too many readings
She has no clear grading or assessment criteria. Her grading is unfair, she expects you to write things exactly as she has would. It's like she expects you to ready her mind.
unclear grading system, you don't know if she'll give you participation points even if u think u did. there are a lot of long readings, which are insightful but unrealistic to do if u have a packed schedule. she always has something to nitpick with exam answers even though u get ur point across. there are certainly better profs out there
dawg don't even bother with her, i think the tags are self explanatory, the class was fire, she just wasn't.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!! The worst teacher I have had. There is no clear grading criteria, you will essentially not have any freedom of thought. She expects you to do assignments exactly how SHE thinks, I mean she will grade your ANNOTATIONS on readings.
Horrible teacher, very Anti-Semitic, Expects you to know her opinion at all times
Got an A- but because my final saved me. She expects you to remember every author and everything from her readings. If you don't annotate like her expect 50 comments about how you didn't get the right takeaway. How are u gonna tell me my annotations r wrong qirl like?? Just don't take it unless uou're very dedicated. Not much work to do tho
Ridiculous amount of work for a 100 class. She expects you to memorize every little thing about the authors. Quizzes are like almost every class, and her grading is not great. She corrects your annotations when it's literally annotations. Syllabus changes throughout the semester and is disorganized. I don't recommend.
