Too strict, too much of a work load and not helpful feedback. Would not take again.
Tests are based on 3 things: lecture notes, textbook, and add. readings. They do not overlap. She creates a study guide for each test, which is helpful but very long. Work in a group on google doc. Lectures are 2 hours & dull, but sometimes end early. No tech. Has random in-class graded reaction papers and attendance in discussion is recorded.
Worst professor I have ever had. Not understanding/ very critical. Lectures are long and boring. Doesn't allow any tech, & will call you out on it. Have to handwrite notes (copy word for word from ppt). Makes everything extremely difficult for students/ expects too much. Takes forever to hand back grades. Talks about herself too much. DO NOT TAKE
3 tests, no final. reaction papers randomly assigned at the VERY end of lectures- Overall: class could have been very good but Didn't like this professor. At the end when she did grades it was almost like she wanted people to do poorly in her class. If you're looking for an A, don't recommend this. A- is definitely doable though.
HARSH, Harsh grader and exams are made to trick you and make u fail. Oh! She thought she could remember everyone's faces and names (100+ students) and give them individual participation grades, which failed miserably. And jesus, she is so so stubborn and will give you the ugliest reasons to why she won't listen to you. Sorry, but worst class ever.
The students who have rated Dr. Lee so far are simply being whiny and immature. Complaining about the no laptop/phone policy, having to take notes by hand, having to take not of what is on slides etc. Come on! I know this class is a lower level, i.e. many freshmen and sophomore, but this is embarrassing. Dr. Lee is a fantastic professor.
Dr. Lee was very unhelpful. I tried getting help from her by emailing her and she would never reply. She does not work with students at all and is rigid. The study guides are extremely long. I would not take this teacher if you can help it.
Professor Lee does not hand out A's. This is USC. There is supposed to be rigor involved. How you do depends on how much you put into it. Lee has rules and if you do not follow them, you get penalized. However if you show up, pay attention and put forth some effort, this class is not hard. I enjoyed in mostly and Lee herself is easy to talk to.
COMM301 with Carmen is a research class. Not writing a bs "research" paper, but actual original research. You'll learn a lot. But if this is not your thing, don't take it. Keep your project SIMPLE. You only have so many weeks to do it. Don't overdo it and be in trouble the last weeks. If you ask for help, Carmen will help you (office hours!)
Professor Lee has really cooled down my passion in communication. I took notes and reviewed for each of her lectures, but the grade I have received really scared me. Her lectures were boring, and the review materials she gave us was unhelpful and pointless. Plus, her TAs were harsh graders.
She is not helpful, pretty rude actually. Seems like she wants her students to do poorlywhich is a total change from the other great professors at Annenberg. This class really killed my interest in comm. The discussion classes are 100% pointless & the study guide sucks (which typically comes out to 20-30 pgs when you are done and theres 3 of them.
Lecture is dense, but material is laid out very clearly. Study guides are VERY helpful and straight forward. If I would have simply paid attention during class, I would have gotten an A+. She knows her material and explains it in simple terms. It's difficult, but pay attention in class and you'll learn the theories easily.
Study guide provided is very disorganized/out of order and misses a lot of things and also includes extra things that were never discussed. Many test questions are straight out of the textbook and were never mentioned in class so do the readings before the 3 tests. 10 random "reaction papers"-attend class as they are compositely worth a test grade.
Choose your project partner wisely. I had a terrible partner who did nothing so the project was hell for me. Got an A tho because she graded surprisingly nicely on all the final projects. For grading homework and project benchmarks, she is extremely nitpicky. Never used textbook, only online readings. Understand lectures and HW and you'll do well.
She's beyond sweet and the TAs are very helpful. Her tests consist of A LOT of material and some of the questions are ambiguous so the tests are hard but the lecture is semi boring but useful and occasionally interesting
Favorite professor at USC. She is so passionate about what she talks about that she makes you interested. Her tests are a little challenging but her study guides go over everything so there are no surprises. She has online review sessions before exams which are really helpful and you can always meet with her or TA in person. Highly recommended.
Professor Lee is tough but inarguably my favorite professor. I still have lunch with her often even though I took her class a year ago. Her lectures are interesting and engaging, and she gives you everything you need to know on a study guide, and even does pre-test online office hours. If you're willing to put in effort, you can't miss out on her.
I was excited to take Comm 301, but as semester progressed, my cohorts and I just started hating it. The material is dense, hw seems easy but takes time, and the paper is everyone's worst nightmare. Make sure to pick a topic that is simple, don't do anything fancy because you'll regret it. Take this class if your other classes are lighter.
Comm 200. Really smart and kind professor. Very willing to help you. Great lecturer. She uses Tophat so you have to go to class but it is very manageable class. 3 exams, 1 paper and 1 group assignment. Must use book. She gives study guides!
Carmen cares a great deal about her students and gives them all the resources they need to do well . If you attend class regularly, (and actually listen in class), and study for the tests, you'll do well. She responded quicker to my e-mails than any other professor I have had. She is committed and passionate about her work, and it shows. Your turn.
She is such a great professor!
Carmen Lee is the definition of a mediocre professor. Her class is so boring and every lecture just shows numerical stats for media representation that you need to memorize verbatim. She doesn't do anything to make it exciting, and throws pop essays at you in class. That being said, she's a really sweet person and really cares about the subject.
Hands down one of the kindest and most caring professors I have had at USC, let alone at Annenberg. She will help her students in any way she can. Her study guides are dense, yes, but they are necessary if you want to get a good grade on the exam. She provides fun and interesting examples of the subject matter, and her lectures are easy to follow!
Carmen is a great professor! Her class is interesting but you definitely have to put in the work when it comes time to study. She assigns a lot of reading but it really does help make the class easier in the long run. That being said, she makes class interesting with great illustrative examples. For sure a professor that I would take from again!
Carmen seems to be a very sweet and caring professor at first, but things changed very quickly. She was very demeaning and rude when asked questions that I didn't understand. Doesn't post any of the powerpoint online which makes it hard to study for the tests. The tests have so much content that it is almost impossible to get an A. Do not take.
Engaging and sweet professor! Lots of material and dense study guides, but know whats on them and youre guaranteed an A.
I took her last year and she is an OK teacher but this class is definitely harder than her others. Make sure you choose your groups wisely as you have a semester-long group project. Lots of lecture and class is super long. She's nice though and accessible just not my favorite class overall as far as the work load.
Carmen Lee is possibility the meanest teacher I have had at USC. She is snarky and doesn't care about the greater good for her students. She thinks that her way is the only right way, with some of her statistics and information wrong on her slides, contradicting the textbook information. Going to her class feels like a waking nightmare. Do not take
Carmen Lee is the best professor I have ever had. She is funny, accessible and truly cares about her students. This class is packed with information but if you use her study guides and take the practice test, you will get an A. She gives you every opportunity to get an A in this class!
I had Carmen for COMM313 and I found her to be super easy and caring, however when I took COMM301, things definitely took a turn. She is unsympathetic, snarky, and condescending if you ask questions about the material. Don't ask her for one-on-one help because she will treat you like you're stupid. Never ever taking one of her classes again
I really wanted to like Carmen, but I just... can't. Maybe I did at first, but as the semester progressed, she began to reveal her snarky and condescending attitude. Have a question? Don't even bother asking unless you want to receive a backhanded/ condescending response. I just can't understand teachers who want to make their students feel dumb?
Carmen was an excellent lecturer whose passion was truly conveyed via dialog. Only 3 exams and 4 papers, the rest is heavy reading of comm theories from the textbook and online articles. Active participation grants more points but she will not call on you. I simply found comm to be boring as it was too analytical for my liking; but, she was great!
She seems sweet at first, but throughout the semester becomes very patronizing. She is very rude & at times it seems like she almost wants students to fail. I received an A in the class, but it is A LOT of work. Lectures exactly the same every class, all studies and % she wants you to memorize. Dreaded every single lecture. Do not recommend.
It's poorly thought out that this particular professor teaches a class that is a mandatory requirement. She thrives on belittling students that ask questions. Her lectures are disinteresting and she does not understand that students hold a workload that is heavier than just her class. Would not recommend anyone take her - too snarky and unhelpful.
I was nervous to take this class with carmen because of her poor rating but LOVED it. If you are at all interested in research you will learn so much. The tests are straightforward and there are lots of extra credit opportunities. Yes, sometimes she can seem condescending and a little mean but overall she really cares about her students.
Not really sure why the reviews are so bad because Carmen is a real gem! She makes sure everyone is following along during lecture and creates really thorough study guides to help out on exams. She also creates study sessions the night before the exams. Super helpful! I really recommend taking her class!
Professor Lee is no doubt a good person with the intention to help her students. However, I would say that she sticks to a very particular structure old fashioned teaching which is quite outdated. If you are looking for a forward thinking professor dont look here.
Carmen is extremely kind and takes the effort to interact with all of her students. She checked in on our mental health during online learning and was flexible with deadlines and lectures. She's passionate and experienced and her slides and lectures are a great intro to comm. Use the study guide and attend lectures, you'll do great.
She's an amazing professor and super caring but the class itself is so annoying. Unless you are passionate about this stuff it is such a headache. Be prepared to do a lot more work than you expected. I wouldn't have taken it if it wasn't mandatory
There is just so much work! You would think during COVID there would be a little leniency. We have difficult quizzes that we have to complete in a certain time limit and don't even have the time to review our questions. We also have weekly readings and book readings and lectures. Literally so much work. Not terribly difficult but just overwhelming
Professor Lee is actually really great. Yes, we have weekly quizzes but they are completely open book and take 10 minutes to complete; certainly not the headache that others have claimed that they are. Lee has been really kind surrounding providing extra resources for online class and COMM 301 is very easy as a whole.
Very disorganized. Our final project (worth almost 1/3 of our grade) is beyond confusing and requires us to use skills we were never taught. Other students I have spoken to are also beyond confused. She also doesn't update grades/participation until end of the year. I have 0 idea what my grade is. She is very kind though.
Had a solid A. Then learned at the END of the semester that she was expecting you to engage in multiple office hours and in class discussions (with 100 people). Had to switch to P/NP. Like asynchronous participation??? Twitter has it right - girl we in a panny.
I've taken Carmen twice and she's a super nice, organized professor. I took this for my major and my math GE and it is by far easier than any other real math class. There's two big projects that are kind of a pain, but the quizzes are super easy if you just attend lecture and take notes.
Just really vague assignments. A lot of what we learned in lecture isn't even graded on the papers - most of the data math (I guess it's called?) was ignored completely. Really wouldn't take if you don't have to.
Very understanding. You can tell she really cares about her students. Maybe it's different b/c of zoom but I really did not think she was hard. For a 300 level, I did not put in as much work/effort as I thought I would have to. You'd actually have to try to get lower than a B in my opinion, she gives a lot of chances and is lenient.
Very sweet professor, but this class is messy at best. It spends too much time looking way too close at subjects that don't need this much structure (& can honestly exist out of it). A class nobody would take if they didn't have to.
one of the worst COMM profs at USC. 2 midterms, a final, and a paper that is worth more than half your total grade. beware bc you won't have. a lot of work in the beginning so start the research proposal beforehand. she is almost never available for online office hours and is passive aggressive over email. do not recommend.
Do not take her class. She is a nice woman but there is literally 0 instruction behind her assignments which leaves you left wondering what the heck you are supposed to do. Also, she tests you on things that are not even in the notes so that's nice. Overall, if you need to take this class for a requirements, wait a semester for a different teacher.
Professor Carmen is really sweet and caring of students' needs. She addresses our concerns one on one even without TAs and it shows. For COMM313 exams, they are really easy as long as you put in the work to fill the study guide. I felt that I learnt a lot through the discussions in class facilitated by her. It felt like a safe environment to learn
COMM313 was my first Communication course at USC and I honestly couldn't have had a better experience. Professor Lee's lectures are incredibly straightforward and well structured, but you need to attend in order to get the notes. She gave lengthy feedback on papers despite not having a TA. I don't understand the low ratings, she's a gem.
The tests are easy A/A+s because she gives you detailed study guides, but the grading for case studies is hard (which is most of your grade). Professor is nice and understanding but the class is very outdated which makes papers hard to write. This class just doesnt keep up with other Annenberg classes in that sense. You have to attend class.
Professor Carmen Lee was good. If you're considering taking a COMM class, I would most definitely recommend this one. The readings and homework isn't heavy, but you must attend lecture. Everything in the class is told in lecture, if you don't attend you will fail. She marks participation and attendance everyday
I appreciate Professor Carmen's straightforwardness when it comes to midterm exams as she gives detailed study guides as to what to expect, and if you fill it out completely, you'll get an A. However, the majority of the grade is from the two case studies and she does not provide comparative examples so this makes it confusing. Attendance matters!
This was my 2nd class w/ prof. lee & she's absolutely my favorite professor at USC! If you have some interest in research, this is the class to take as you will learn how to execute a research project. 3 exams but she provides study guides & study sessions before tests. I always felt comfortable asking questions. Chance for extra credit in the end!
Professor Lee is a great teacher who cares about her students and makes sure everyone gets as much help as they need.
Carmen is really sweet and will eagerly help you if you ask, but the class itself was a struggle. If you want a GE that isn't a lot of math, this is it, but the final is a research paper that you write half of with a group throughout the semester. If you get a bad group, you're up to your neck in work. Utilize bb for clarification on assignments.
I was told by a lot of people not to take her, and I regret not listening to them. This class is horrible, and you don't have access to the lecture note or take pictures of the slides (she will freak out if you do). It's like pulling teeth going to class and trying to be engaged with her lectures.
For anyone interested in taking this course, I am begging you to not do it. Professor Lee is probably one of the worst professors at USC. Beware of emailing her, because she will not respond well. She does not like students who ask questions and will give you no wiggle room on your final grade. THERE ARE OTHER COMM COURSES TO TAKE, stay away!
Please find another class if possible. Honestly just very annoying and her mood genuinely seems to improve after humiliating or disrespecting students, like witch vibes idk.
Professor Lee is a tough professor. She can be very sweet but just not understanding at times. If things come up, she will not excuse you and is reluctant to be accommodating with assignments. If you are taking COMM 313 for your requirement, I recommend you take the alternative, COMM 200. As this class is almost always, taught by Professor Lee.
Stay away! Do not recommend.
It is evident she cares about the students, but can be rude sometimes which is very off putting. The class is a lot of work, but more manageable than expected. You can miss 6 classes without hurting your grade. I would recommend a different class if possible, but if you must take it you'll survive, it's not as bad as people make it to be.
STAY AWAY!
Avoid this professor at ALL COSTS. Lectures were so long and boring, that you don't retain anything. I asked other students and many also had no idea what was going on half the time. Hard to get help on the semester-long project and our TA didn't help with the project either. Don't do it, this class felt like the biggest waste of time.
Your grade is based on weekly open-note quizzes, papers and a project, and class participation. If you attend the lectures, you will do well on all of the quizzes because the answers are in the slides. The papers are long and are graded hard, so don't procrastinate. Professor Lee is fairly understanding and tries to make the course engaging.
The chunk of your grade comes from the research paper and in-class presentation with your group, just make sure you have a group that pays attention and willing to do the work you'll be fine. Weekly quizzes on info in the lectures on Blackboard that are due outside of class, and extra credit offered near the end of the semester. Amazing professor.
She's a very nice person but if you don't show up and take notes in class then you're pretty much screwed for her exams since she doesn't post her PowerPoints/lecture slides.
I don't write RMP posts but this lady has earned my first one. Do not take her class, trust me. Just take the extra GE class if needed. You better hope people in your group project are willing to actually help in this terrible research project. She is so condescending and made many of us feel ungrateful for being USC students. Disney adult.
Carmen Lee does not care about her students and sets unrealistic standards. Avoid at all costs unless you are a Comm major and absolutely need the overlapping math and theory requirement. Crazy hard group project and absurd deadlines. AVOID!
Save your mental. Save your peace. She's terrible, condescending, and tries to make you feel inconsiderate or ungrateful if you ask a question. Very rude. Tried to ask for help & guidance on the research project and she literally stopped me mid-sentence and told me to stop talking. DO-NOT-TAKE! oh and, Disney adult. lives, loves, breathes Disney..
Frustrating. Exams were highly specific (This % was found in this study from this year from this author). Lack of transparency when her own TA left the class for "personal reasons". Grading was heavily delayed and kept making broken promises stating grades would be published soon. Also graded students based on their opinions for her BrightSpace.
Semester long research project with no accountability for group members who helped less. Unclear instructions on assignments and often contradictory advice given by TA's when asked to clarify instructions. Not understanding over email. Would zoom through lectures without posting them online or allowing photos. Avoid taking
Dr. Lee is truly terrible. She is openly rude in class, yelling at students in front of lectures with 100+ students. Makes Brightspace impossible to navigate, and yells at students in front of the class if they take a photo of her slides—which she prohibits. Incredibly difficult to access any classroom material or work to assist my learning. Rude.
Awful. Prepare for essay-length responses critiquing every assignment you turn in because she is never satisfied. She tries her best to make the boring material interesting, but fails. Halfway through the semester, NO ONE knew what was going on. This class is perfect for lazy students who ride their group members' coat tails the whole semester.
I cried multiple times being in this class. Not only was it incredibly stressful with the most coursework I have ever had, but she was outright mean and did not want to help her students. Do not take. And honestly, the school should look into her teaching methods.
This is by far the worst class and worst professor I have ever had at SC, please do not take this class, SO HARD. she doesn't post slides. have to do the outrageous amounts of studying and reading for a comm class that just does not need to be that hard. says her study guides are super detailed but they're actually just really vague. DONT TAKEEEE
this woman is so upsetting dont take her if u can .. also if youre not a stem person the only way you will pass this class is getting with a smart group
Very accessible outside of class if you take the initiative to schedule meetings with her. Always makes time for students. Her feedback was very helpful and essays were fairly graded according to it. Allowed to bring notes for the midterm and final. Strict about deadlines though, gives late penalty for late work submitted even a few hours late
Not sure why she's getting such a low rating on RMP, best professor I've had this semester. She's super friendly, loves talking to her students, 3 exams+3 papers, exams were easy if you study with only MCQs and 1 sheet of note allowed, papers were only 2 pages each. Wants all her students to get good grades. MUST TAKE!
Not sure why people rate Dr. Lee so low. She is incredibly smart, very welcoming, and genuinely does everything she can to help you succeed. Course work can be difficult but you are given an entire double sided paper for notes each test. She is always available outside of class and ends early every time; I have taken every class she offers at USC.
Very engaging lectures; I didn't want to fall asleep once. Prof asks students for their perspectives and encourages us to discuss our thoughts with each other. HW is very manageable; mostly readings and a few essays. She is kind, organized, and communicative. Coming for lectures and taking notes on everything is important to do well on the tests.
I took this class in 2024 and I got reminded of it today and it just made me mad. If you are thinking about taking this class, look at the RMP score. Look at the reviews, there are so many reasons as to why they're so low. She is genuinely mean to students, responds with LONG condescending emails to simple requests, and painfully boring lectures.
Carmen really cares about her students and has engaging lectures! Class always ended 20 minutes early so you can talk to her. She was very organized and gave a lot of extra resources and practice material. Not the easiest A, but not hard. If you take notes and do all the assignments you'll do just fine. Grading wasn't harsh and TAs were awesome!
Carmen's 301 course has been restructured so the final research project is individual, rather than group, which has improved the course compared to past reviews. She provides lots of feedback and ends class early to provide time if students need extra help. The Brightspace however was difficult to navigate and the class has very few assignments.
