Great Spanish teacher! Very helpful and caring.
SHE IS PHENOMENAL!!!I TOOK SPANISH 3,4,5,AND 6 WITH HER.I'VE LEARNED SOOOO MUCH FROM HER.SHE IS INTELLIGENT, EASYGOING, UNDERSTANDING,CARING PERSON AND AN AWESOME INSTRUCTOR.I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HER.
I am taking her for Summer 04 in her combined Spanish 4/5/6 class. She is a really nice teacher who actually knows the language. Her methods of teaching allow her students to understand the material. And she cares about us doing well. Great teacher. :)
She is a nice teacher and cares about students. Learn a lot from her class!!
Great teacher! I've learnet so much from her that my previous teachers didn't teach. :)
She is the greatest Spanish teacher ever. With her, I was able to fill in all the gaps I had in Spanish. Definitely take her class.
Great teacher! I learned so much. I got an A because I was modivated to learn because of her exscellent teaching.
Well, I thought she was a great teacher! She knows what she is talking about and if you want to learn (seriously) take her! I did! and got me a fancy B.
she is a great teacher, but i didn't like her teaching style...it reminded me of an elementary class with all of the songs, group things, and skits
I can't imagine a better instructor than la Profesora Carmen. She brings in superb handouts of her own construction, gives clear assignments (and checks to see that they are done), breathes life into the culture sections, and is always available. Very vivacious. Never a dull moment.
um, shes really nice and will gladly help you.. i ALWAYS got As in spanish until she gave me a B. Her teaching style sucks. she expects you to figure out new material for homework, without explaining it as a cushion for when you go home. nice person, sucky teaching style, i deserved an A.
Carmen is very sweet and has a very likeable personality. It is, however, extremely difficult to get an "A" in her class. Expect to do at least an hour of homework on handouts every night, including over the weekend. A fairly new teacher and seems like she's still learning.
Her tests are hard. But overall is a very good teacher.
if you have been doing well in span1-3, she should be a very easy teacher for you. she has a lot more work than the earlier levels, but still grades easily.
Best Spanish instructor ever! Actually has zest for life and her job unlike my spanish teachers in high school. WARNING: APPROX. 15 MIN. OF HOMEWORK ALMOST EVERY NIGHT. However, she gives you a HW calendar the first day, and if you do all of it, there is no need to study. Carmen is very kind and helpful!
Very nice and understanding teacher. You must pay attention in classes. Quizzes are a bit complicated and long. YOU HAVE TO STUDY TO PASS!!! She is very clear on what she expects and is always available through email, phone, or office hours, she really cares.
Profesora Lizardi-Folley teaches the class where you actually learn Spanish...some of the other ones are a waist of time. If you do your homework and participate in class, it isn't that hard to get an A. It's also the class that you feel like you're doing worse in than you really are...in this regard, she is very accommodating.
Had the choice of taking either her, the more work teacher, or Cicerone, the easy A teacher. She is very nice and very helpful. I learned tons in her class, more than I would have from any other prof. She requires daily work, that will take at least 1/2 hour. Oral presentations are 10% of grade, homework is 15%, attendance is 20%. Not for slackers!
Carmen is a great teacher! SHe makes spanish so much easier. She does make you work hard though so be prepared to work. Her teaching is VERY comprehensive. you come out of the class knowing SOO SOO much more spanish than before. My spanish skills are three times better now. She's hard though just a warning.
She's the best prof I have ever had in my whole life. And I've had quite a lot. I got A+. And that's because i did not have any absences, i was active during the class, i worked with a partner, always had my homework. I strongly recommend tanking her class since she makes it very interesting, engaging and she's extremely helpful. Mrs. Lizardi: I lo
Homework everyday, but it's mostly worksheets so it varies on time it takes. Quizzes & tests are long and hard but shes tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on it. You learn lots and she's really helpful
she is THE teacher. She gives 100% and she expect 100% from you. She makes her class very interesting, engaging and she's extremely helpful. If you really want to learn Spanish, then this is the teacher for you.
Looks can be deceiving, at first I thought Carmen would be a very intimidating and uptight prof. But her professional personality makes Spanish really fun. I enjoy 100% of everything that she teaches and talks about. She's a very enthusiastic but sterm woman which makes everyone learn a lot. There are also many bonus questions when it comes to test
Awesome teacher! Her class sessions are very interesting. Tests are super easy if you do your homework everyday. A lot of bonuses on tests. She's very clear and helpful. The only thing bad about her is that she's not teaching Spanish 2.
This teacher is a (WITCH)if you are a native student she grades you like there's no tomorrow. Not a good teacher she can't handle 3 levels put together very unorganized. It seems like she doesn't like her own people.
Monday-Friday class, Carmen is straight forward on her expectations and assignment break down is very thorough and helpful. Homework is assigned everyday, but they are quick exercises that goes with the next days lesson. Best part is Carmen gives you 5 absences, that if not used goes towards your final grade. Fun class , great teacher, learned a lo
Strongly recommend you take this professor if you like the uninspired method of teaching directly out of the textbook. Avoid if you actually took the time to learn to speak the language; she will not be impressed easily and grade you harder than others. I've noticed she has her favorites as well. Unsympathetic. Made me want to change majors.
Spends a lot of time putting students into groups while she walks around the class checking homework assignments individually, instead of just having students self-check answers or turn them in to her to save time. Often you will go home without learning the lesson to the assigned homework because of poor time management. Have to learn from book.
Ms. Carmen is a really dedicated teacher. I never had any exposure to spanish before and I thought it would be hard for me, but instead it was an easy class for me ONLY BECAUSE OF PROFESORA CARMEN!!
Carmen was a real easy teacher. She really wants you to understand what you're learning and on top of that she gives out a TON of extra credit. For me she made learning spanish easy. She also gives you 4 free absences, and if you dont take it, it counts as extra credit. Can't wait to take her again.
agreed with the person below, i took her last year.tests and quizes are kinda hard and she makes you take 10 min oral infront of the class, if you dont know the answer to something shes fameous for rolling her eyes at you.i went to all the classes did all the hw got a (c)the only ppl who rave about her class are the kissups. if u wanna an A dont ta
worse worse worse teacher, she has an attitudelike no other and totally has favorites in the class. the only ppl who like her are the kissups. she is fameous for her snotty remarks and rolling of the eyesdont take her if want a good grade. she said im gonna give u a passing grade.i earned my grade she didnt give me anything except for a hard time!!
shes truely auful since shes been teaching for 20 years and thinks shes untouchable. theres hw everyday, she calls on students constantly and calls ppl out all the time. her test are pretty hard and makes to do a 10 min oral at the end of the quarter in spanish. dont take. donta take. dont tak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is good teacher. She helped a lot. I like her teaching style. She gave us so much homework and checked everyday. I learned a lot from her. I really recommend her :)
I had Carmen for two quarters. She is an amazing teacher. She is hard all right but she knows her staff and she wants you to learn it. I believe that the last negative comments are from some students that didn't want to do the work and get an A.
She is a very good teacher. I took her class for Spanish 3, 4, and 5. She speaks in Spanish to the class the whole time and sometimes in English to clarify some things. Her assignments can be challenging at some times. She has Spanish 4, 5, and 6 combined into one class due to budget cuts. As long as you try your best you will be fine.
Carmen is a wonderful teacher; very animated, cheerful, organized, helpful, and knowledgeable. I've had her for Spanish 1,3, and 4 and I've never had a complaint. She teaches in both Spanish and English, depending on the level of the class and is very intuitive when it comes to the needs of her students. I highly recommend this teacher!
She gives tons of homework which you are supposed to complete in writing and she checks your homework every day in class. She does not check if your answers are correct, she just makes sure you have something neatly written in your notebook. All tests are multiple choice and very easy, but she gives a lot of questions on Cultura. Very boring.
Really did not enjoy this class- very hard teacher, does not help at all. She is very unclear as to what she wants, and is a very difficult grader. Very nit-picky. Really dreading having to take this class again, as is pretty much the only Spanish teacher there is...
She is a great professor and very helpful when you need her, emails or phone calls. But the quiz and tests are not easy at all, they are hella tricky. SO STUDY AND PREPARE A LOT BEFORE THE TESTS!! You will do fine then, if you do so. She has high expectation toward her students. Prepare and Excel :)
Carmen is very funny and outgoing, but she is also all business. She will help you and slow things down if you request it. Homework is very easy, but tests are difficult; a matter of memorizing and retaining a lot of vocab and grammar. But do-able. I got a B and worked moderately...
As long as you go to class you will get an A. She ended up giving the students who missed less than 5 days of class A LOT of extra credit. Just do you homework (takes like 15 mins) and study the basic verb information. I considered myself bad at spanish and didn't enjoy the subject but I really enjoyed this class. Make sure you have the book early!
You have to pay attention and do the homework and follow along. You do have an oral evaluation but its one on one. I did horrible on the oral evaluation and okay on everything else. I got a B .
Outstanding teacher!! Attendance counts but flexible enough to allow me to take a two week vacation without dropping me. This could only work because she's so organized. I'm hard of hearing and appreciate her using a portable PA system. Impressive!
After finishing Span2 and Span3 with other teachers I am very grateful for the groundwork Carmen helped me lay. By far the best at explaining Grammar structure. Recommended to all who are serious about learning Spanish. If you're just trying to get an easy grade, go somewhere else.
Shes good
She is a really nice lady. Mother-like personality and cares for her students. Don't skip class and make sure to participate. Her class is easy if you do the homework and listen to her lectures. Best Spanish teacher.
Had 15 absences but got an A lol TBH I didn't like her, but she was the best teacher for spanish1. You can also show her your assignments late for credit. For me, it was easy cuz ive taken 5yrs of spanish already, but I feel that for beginners, the class might be tough. Those who didnt know spanish AT ALL had low grades and were confused often.
Gosh, she has no respect for student lives: she gives a lot of homework and expects you to know everything like after one lecture. She likes to call on students often and gets very rude when you don't know how to answer the question, like instead on helping you understand the right answer, she calls you out and embarresses you. Not nice and unclear!
I couldn't be happier with Professora Lizard-Folley. She is a wonderful teacher! She is clear, engaging, and very animated. She uses all types of teaching methods to help you understand. She is very helpful and caring about your success. I can't wait to take EspaƱol 2 with her. By far one of the best teaching experiences thus far. Gracias
If you show up to the class and do what you're supposed to do, you will never receive a C. She's the nicest professor in the Spanish department at de anza.
Sra. Folley is such a sweet heart! She's cares a lot about her students success. Have a question? Email her, she will answer to you asap. She really makes sure you are understanding the concept. It is not an easy A. As long as you put your effort you will be fine! I would definitely recommend her! Homework is a fair amount. I'd highly recommend her
I tool spanish 3 with her, and it was such a good time. even though my spanish skill was not good enough to do well but i managed to get A+ on this class! She gives us so much assignments but as long as you do and submit, she gives you full credit! many extra credits! fun lecture! Love her!!!!!
Maestra Carmen is such a nice instructor. She really cares about her student success. She sends very detailed information about everything and gives extra time to complete tasks. She wants to see her students succeed.
Best Spanish teacher I've ever had! Definitely not an easy A but as long as you do the homework, online activities, and study you should have no problem. She gives out plenty of EC opportunities that aren't hard at all and is beneficial to learning the language. Very accommodating when life gets in the way just be sure to communicate with her.
She is such an amazing professor, really cares about you and helping you do well in her class. There is a lot of homework, but she provides a lot of help with it and it isn't too difficult. Gives great study guides, know the vocab. Very patient with slow learners and willing to give personal time to help. Responds fast to emails. Amazing professor
I absolutely LOVED Sra. Lizardi-Folley! My class was one where most of the students were a bit rambunctious, so you could tell they tired her out, but just don't be rude by talking and stuff and you'll have a pleasant time. LOTS of homework like wow, but she drops lowest midterm and writing excersise. Highly recommend!
Sra. Lizardi-Folley is one of the best professors at De Anza because she not only cares about the material she is teaching, she cares that her students learn. She goes the extra mile to ensure her students are understanding the course materials. Also, her lectures and homework are designed to be effective, and they are!
If you are serious about learning Spanish, take Prof. Carmen's class! She is such a devoted teacher and uses every minute to teach. Yes, there's a lot of homework, but you learn a lot too. My listening comprehension has improved so much because she teaches in Spanish. It was hard for me in the beginning though. She is simply a great professor!
Carmen is a wonderful professor and teaches well. I've learned a lot about the Spanish language and culture from her class.
If you really want to LEARN spanish take Professora Carmen! She's great and really clear about her assignments ! Easy A if you actually TRY
She is one of the best professors I have classes with at DeAnza. She explains material very clearly, and available in the office hours. She is very nice, caring and very understanding person. I admire her way of teaching. If you really want to learn Spanish take her classes!
She is willing to help anyone who actually tries. She doesn't have patience for those who don't put in the work and then complain. Make sure to keep up with the MySpanishLab online assignments. Overall a pretty easy class. If you actually try there is no reason for you not to receive a passing grade. She is very strict on attendance as well.
I always recommend taking profesora Carmen's class to anyone who wants/needs to take Spanish because she has a lot of tips and tricks to remember how to read, write, and spell in Spanish. There are discussions every class and I recommend partaking (you're there to speak Spanish after all!)
Carmen is the best professor I've ever met in DeAnza. If you want to lean Spanish 1)She is very flexible in giving material. For example, we(a group of students) asked Carmen to add more conversational Spanish in classes and she adjusted her curriculum 2)She is always ready to help you with everything outside the class. 3) She cares about students
She works hard for students to understand material. She is always ready to help, answer questions. She cares about students and if you want to learn Spanish - this is the right teacher for you!
Carmen does everything she can to help students understand + memorize the language by having the class read out loud, bringing objects to class for a visual aspect, and occasional "reality checks" by writing down phrases/words for you to translate (not graded). Allows 6 absences. Sit next to someone so you could have a partner in class + for oral!
I was fluent in Spanish before taking this class for the easy A. It requires a lot of busy work that does not help those that don't already know Spanish. Everyday come in with homework done and go over yesterdays homework while she gives pass/no pass for homework completion. The textbook basically teaches the class while she rolls her eyes at you.
Profesor Folley is a compassionate, kind, intelligent women who loves what she does and wants every single person to succeed. I was very new to Spanish and the online activities and daily homework helped me become more confident and knowledgeable in Spanish. She is even apart of a world languages club! very engaged. Best professor at De Anza.
Carmen is really hardworking and really wants to help students succeed. This class is not easy A and you really need to work for it. For beginners like me, she is really there for us and is always available. Let's admit it, Spanish is not easy. This class requires work but that's what it takes to learn a language.
Class is quick paced & interactive. It was quite the challenge, but hard work pays off. There is daily HW (book & online), 2 chapter written tests bi-weekly. She's a tough grader on tests & doesn't give a lot of feedback on HW. You need to have time everyday. I was able to learn common knowledge words, fundamentals & some Spanish culture (newbie).
She seems intimidating but her teaching is so endearing. Such a professional, kind hearted professor. She made spanish enjoyable! Homework every night but literally so easy. Tip: do the work, show up, study for the 3 tests, and you will pass with an A. She also provides extra credit! TAKE HER FOR SPANISH TRUST ME. its easy and shes great.
Drops people with more than 10absenses, class from Monday to Thursday. Homework every day including Friday online. A lot of work, but you're learning a new language. Really did get a lot out of this 3months. I never had any experience with Spanish as I come from another country. Really clear study guide, follow it and you can definitely get an A.
She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She works way beyond her capacity. This class does have much work but it is a language class and you are supposed to learn from practicing. Do your work and get your fair grade. I am a brand new Spanish learner but I think I take a firm step into this language after taking her class.
I want to emphasize that if you're taking more than 2 classes, this professor is probably not the best option. Workload is heavy and I'm not sure if Carmen understands some people take several other classes except hers!! I do not totally regret it and she was pretty okay at her job, its not a hard class but very stressful and time consuming...
she is boring, she never gives you a lecture, during her class she will explain to you what is your homework for tomorrow
Great teacher, really makes you work for your grade though. If you really want to learn Spanish, take Carmen. Do be aware that you will need to study and there is a GROUP oral presentation that's like 20 min. long, so it's not an easy A. Def possible to get an A in her class, and she's very kind. If your goal is to learn, take her, if not, skip.
Maestra Folley is a great teacher if you are trying to learn Spanish. Be aware that more than half of your grade is from homework points so you can either do really well or really poorly depending on your level of commitment. Put in effort and you will be fine! Lots of extra credit and tests are very straightforward. Enjoy her class!
Currently taking her course online. While she's a kinda and understanding teacher, she's assigns way too much homework for an intro course (and I've taken two other Spanish 1 classes) and rarely goes over "rules," rather just throwing out words and trusting you to understand them. The first test didn't match what we studied in class at all.
While she is a kind and considerate profesora, like others said she assigns too much homework and tests.
Prof. Carmen is sweet, but she is so picky. As you can see previous comments in ratemyprofessor, she has LOTS of assignments. It is unmanageable amount. To be honest, nothing learn from her lecture. Her lecture is just reviewing previous homeworks.
Profé Carmen goes over the homework for the whole duration of the class. I found that to be not beneficial. We do the homework on our own and should not need to use all of the class time for that. I would love to learn from you!
Profe Carmen cares about her students and is very responsive and hard working. Come to class prepared and ready to participate (because she will call on you) otherwise you can take it asynchronously at Foothill where you will have much more HW, the same amount of tests plus an oral and written midterm & final.
She is kinds most of the time, but is rude to students if students dont participate. Ive tried to participate more when she says this but still calls on the same students. She seems to get annoyed when students arent prepared, which is unfair because she has said she takes up to 5 hours to give us our hw but she copy pastes it from the textbook
Has gotten more on her students to participate and be prepared, even tho she takes hours to send us the google docs that she has copy and pasted from the textbook. This class is busy work
If you actually want to learn Spanish, take this professor. She is not an easy A, and there is a lot of work assigned weekly. Come to class prepared and stay on top of the homework and you should be fine. VERY important to prepare before class because she does call on people all the time. Be prepared for a lot of assignments.
i have a hard time learning Spanish, especially on online. Pero, Maestra. Carmen has somehow got me on the path to learning. shes a fantastic teacher, and id take her classes again. diez/diez, ¡esta Fantástico!
She's definitely a strict but amazing teacher. She grades pretty tough but gives you enough feedback to improve. You do get a lot of quizzes in this course but its pretty easy. Although, she does have a passive aggressive attitude towards students sometimes in her lectures.
My favorite professor! She gives you many study materials and keeps you on task by making you participate.
If I wasn't a proficient Spanish speaker this class would've been even more of a nightmare. She expected everyone to be fluent by the first weeks having at least 3-5 assignments/wk, two quizzes, occasionally a 40 question test, and weekly my lab assignments which are expensive. Attendance is required and she has two long lectures a week
If you want an easy A with less homework, this class is not for you. But if you desire to learn Spanish, I would highly recommend her class. I had never imagined myself being able to read 3 paragraphs in Spanish in mere 3 months after I started learning A Be Ce. Professor Carmen is a very caring and encouraging person too.
Very good at teaching, but also one of the professors that like to punish students for doing a good job. If you are on par with the material (but not ahead of it), you may get accused of cheating just because you didn't make enough mistakes on the work. No matter what I said, she just did not believe me. It was so discouraging and it really hurt.
Profe Carmen is the best language teacher I've had, she's very understanding and cares about her kids. As long as you communicate with her she's ready to help you at any given moment! This class was so much more easier because I had her as a teacher.
The material itself is normal, on par with what I'd expect for a Spanish class. However, you have 5-12 homework assignments EACH DAY, as well as some on weekends. She is a very tough grader and will give you zero credit if you forget an accent, even during the first week. She even teaches words that she admits are not recognized by Spanish speakers
she accused me of cheating because i did well on her assignments
This professor was one of my favorite professors of all time! She is a great teacher, she gives you all the information you need, so it is really up to you if you do the work and retain the information. She is fun and very humorous. She makes the class really fun with her sense of humor. She's strong but also very understanding, patient and caring.
While she can sometimes be caring towards her students, she often gives passive aggressive comments when someone doesn't know the answer. Your grade is mainly made up of homework due at the end of the week, but there is so much assigned it gets overwhelming. She covers so much during each class that you get lost if you miss one. DO NOT TAKE!
Like a lot of other reviews there's so much homework due every week. Even though the material is on-level and the due date is lenient, it's entirely overkill. The class moves at a fast pace and if a student makes mistakes or doesn't 100% understand a topic, be prepared as she sometimes makes condescending comments. Better off taking it at Foothill.
Attendance mandatory, can miss up to 2 classes. Type in chat and speak during Zoom meetings for participation points. Have to purchase MH Connect to do hw. Several short Canvas assignments, 4 chapter quizzes and final. A lot of MH Connect hw also assigned, but she gives a reasonable amount of time to finish them. Also, 2 oral quizzes done on Zoom.
Regret nothing more in life than taking this class. I just needed it to transfer and she made it the worst experience ever. Accused multiple students of cheating, bad attitude, and so passive aggressive you can tell she hates her job and only stays in it to terrorize college students. De Anza needs to rethink her contract for next year.
Carmen is a strict yet engaging professor. Her classes are tough, with lots of homework, but she provides great resources. Attendance is a must. unstuckstudy and the free textbook were lifesavers for study prep.
