She's an entertaining teacher, goes off topic during every discussion, EASY grader and laid back class, not much to do
Had this class a couple of years ago. Dispite some, you guessed it, liberal bias, she is informative and engaging. Work isn't too difficult, and she's pretty flexable and forgiving.

Ms. Madden is such a great teacher!
teacher always went off topic, you never get to know grade, and she favors students
Nice instructor.
She has to be the worst teacher that I have ever had. Her favoritism is ridiculous. This is the first class where I ever felt favoritism can be so powerful. Overall, she cannot teach. Her grading style is terrible and really, I mean it.
she is a very nice teacher!
Great english teacher, works well with one on one issues, no favoritism noticed by me she justs wants students to be engaged with class discussion.
Worst teacher i ever had. never take her!
all of these other people are right, she is a very nice woman (with a bias) but she can not teach if her life depended on it. We always went off topic, always asked questions that she could not answer or didnt answer clear enough and had grades based on your POV. Pick another teacher if you can...
Wow,I don't know which Madden they were taking. She's such a great friendly teacher. Be an active participant and take class seriously and you WILL do well. Promise.
She favors those who participate in class discussions. Go to class and your grade will be better. She won't return papers or tell you your grade, so you must ask her for it asap so you won't be surprised. Discussion topics are interesting.
Very fun
I thought she was a great teacher who was layed back and helped you to get your creative juices flowing.
This class sucks a big one. I don't reccommend you take it.
She is pretty cool. shes hella open so basically she will speak on anything.
koo teacher, really open, and laid back.......koo too conversate with in class...but goes off topic a lot
I recommand it ONLY IF you like to share your ideas with the class and basic writing skills. You should have basic writing skills if you can are able to take this class anyway. She likes to go off topic, which is awesome. The class is basically discussion, home work mostly reading short essays of the book, and then discuss on those. Good stuff.
At first, I HATED the class, she made it feel like an African American Studies class. It's gotten a bit better but still not my favorite. She goes off-topic 90% of the time and she can't teach very well. She doesn't explain things clearly enough. If you don't like to speak out in class, do NOT take her class. That's all she does...
Madden's class is easy. She is down-to-earth, and has a good sense of humor. Participate in the class discussions, read the essays in the book. She only has about two out of class essays, and two or three in class essays. Its an easy A or B, if you do what she requires of you, which is not very much.
Madden's class is fun. If you do the work, you'll do good in her class. Her topics are interesting.
True, classes always go off topic for at least the first half hour of class... and many times throughout... but she is good at literary critisism. I do sense the liberal bias, but it doesn't bother me too much. She's extremely nice and makes you feel comfortable in class. All we did was turn in 2 short stories and a few in-class excercises.
she is AWESOME...good teacher...great help...easy... what else can you ask for...good sense of humor... would take her as an instructor for other classes...
she goes off topic alot and her class is a waste of time. we brain strom about essay topics and correct quizzes for the majority of her classes. easy but not educational
She constantly goes off topic during class, always talking her sons and whatnot. But overall the class is fun and kick-back. easy teacher if u do all the busy work. And even if u miss class often, u dont miss much.
really cool teacher, laid back, keeps the class interesting, class is pretty easy, doesnt give that much homework, just about 4 or 5 essays in the semester but she grades very nicely, lets class out about 20 minutes early almost every time, class is mostly discussions which are very fun, overall very fun class to attend, easy A or B,good times her in clas
She is the worst teacher at Ohlone. Not only does she go off topic, but also doesn't teach you anything. She has her degrees and what not when she cannot decipher between YOUR and YOU'RE. She's an incompetent teacher. She should reconsider her teaching career. I highly recommend not taking her class. You will learn NOTHING!
She literally doesnt teach anything..all she does is talks about her life and family..then when it comes to essay she grades it so bad...You will not learn anything in this class...I would recommend to take other proffesors for this class...
OMG.shes hard. only 4 essays..... thats it. hard hard
THIS WOMEN TEACHES YOU NOTHING AT ALL!!!SHE EASILY GETS OFF TOPIC AND STAYS OFF TOPIC!!!AND SHE GRADES RIDICULOUSLY!!!NEVER TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!WE ONLY HAD LIKE 3 OR 4 ESSAYS...I DID MORE ESSAYS AND LEARNED MORE WHEN I TOOK A CLASS IN THE SUMMER WHICH IS HALF THE TIME THAT WE HAD IN THIS CLASS!!!
Starts to rant about stuff other than English and when it does come to English-related criteria, it's about what words she prefers in her thesis statements. She gave one of my papers a D just because it was "inappropriate" Waste of my time and even though I barely passed w/C, I'd rather take it over again with a QUALIFIED English professor.
She has been the worst teacher I have ever taken. I worked so hard, went to tutoring to get my essays revised, and in the end I STILL received a D. Coming to class is not necessary at all, but she does pick favorites. I received an F on my final because I was told I didn't do MLA format in which I did. This situation is going to to the dean.
She is so much fun, I wasn't much of a writer before because I was afraid to, she made me feel really comfortable about my writing. Not much work, but always a good time in class.
Her class may not seem like a lot of work but the essays can be a bit difficult. Rarely on task and can be intimidating. Reading is some excerpts from the textbook (rarely used) and the book "Friday Night Lights". Didn't really learn anything.
Not only did I learn nothing, but I felt like I was regressing back to english at the Jr. high level. She rants about her own life/political views during class and attendance is utterly pointless except you have to go in case of a pop quiz. Given effort, an A is not hard to get, but the class overall is ridiculous and I don't advise taking it.
She doesn't teach in a helpful manner&her instructions are unclear.I doubt she reads the essays fully. If you're a republican/conservative, this class definitely isn't for you.She goes off topic, & often brings up one-sided problems she's had with students in the past.&How they were stupid/wrong and she was right. She has an "eye-roll" type of attitu
I LOOOOOOVE CARMEN MADDEN. SHE MIGHT SEEM HARD AT FIRST BUT IF YOU JUST SHOW HER YOU CARE ABOUT DOING WELL, THAT IS WHAT YOUR OUTCOME WILL BE.
She cancelled every other class and never told us beforehand, but our attendance was "very important." She made fun of us and didn't respect our opinions. She just grades whatever she feels like. We had to watch very inapproprate movie in class. We read things and watched things and never did anything. Not a good teacher.
Most of the creative writing classes were made up of her reading student writing and then us as a class discussing it. There was no real instruction involved. We had no text and few models of published writing. We received feedback after our work was read, sometimes 4-6 weeks after turning it in.
Ms. Madden doesn't spend time on teaching writing skills. Her entire focus is on reviewing material that requires critical thinking skills. Her approach may be difficult for some wanting a more traditional/laid out to follow path. I felt she was absolutely creative in her approach to developing critical thinking. Requires student initiative.
one of the most terrible instructors at ohlone college. She does not even prepare for class in advance. She prepares for class IN CLASS!she does not even explain the essays properly to the class to fully understand the thesis. She is very disorganized. The only great thing about her class is that she is nice and very liberal. I suggest another tch
She comes to class late and unprepared and lets you out 30min early. Her class is very laid back and all you do is watch movies then write an argumentative paper about it. BUT she grades papers HARSHLY and doesn't explain clearly what you need to do. This class is half/half. Half hard, half easy. It's up to you if you feel like choosing her.
As stated, she was often late, disorganized, cancelled class often, yet grades hard. She took the attitude that "we all just want to do the bare minimum". I was let down because I took the class to learn. It is hard to get a good grade when there are so few (uninteresting) assignments and strict grading. Class could've been much more interestin
I liked her, a bit opinionated, but if you're on her good side then she's nice. I would take her class again.
I took English 101A with professor Madden and it astonishes me that she gets such a bad wrap with students. I will admit she does miss quite a few classes, but when has that become a bad thing to students? If you need help with your papers or research please know that she will help you 100% if you show you care about your success in the class.
Must buy your textbooks. Reading the text is very important in this class, for she will quiz you on it. Couldn't say she's helpful or not, just average.
Anyone who understands the basic structure of a formal academic paper will do well in her 101C class. Everyone else should just retake English 101A, because it really doesn't get any easier. In class, we watched movies/read books, we and wrote essays about them. Not summary essays, but essays arguing a point about the topic. Essays with a thesis.
I liked her
She lectured more than anyone I've ever seen, I don't know what the guy behind me was thinking. She's also cute, in that "Halle Berry's Mom" kind of way. I never took the final, which is maybe why I got a D+, but it was at 7AM! Who's going to get up that early!?
AVOID HER!!! NEVER! YES! NEVER! know what she is looking for because she grades whatever she likes goes to ELC to ask help for essays and several teachers say good, but she says "no good" with not understandable explanations.
Not the easiest teacher, but she does in class essays which is not all that fun. However she is an interesting person and usually keeps class entertaining.
This woman is the most unorganized, scattered-brain person I have ever come in contact with. On her online class she gives a one liner for every assignment & leaves you guessing on what she wants you to do. She posts assignments when she feels like it; one week on Mon, next week on Fri or you’ll go a couple of weeks without hearing from her. Bad!!
Don't take her unless you don't have a choice! Her classes are full of guessing as you don't know what she really wants. 3 essays; she will take tons of points away if she doesn't like your essay OR she doesn't agree with you. She won't tell you what she really wants as she treats the essays as a "test". NOT helpful! Horrible class.
She is a fun person but not quite the best teacher. She doesn't grade extremely hard so it balances it out. I didnt like her in class essays though, but that might just be me
Although she likes to go off topic and sometimes forgets to tell you when she isn't going to show up to teach the class, her exams are extremely easy.
She's a very easy grader. Most of the time, you're either going to be watching a movie or discussing excerpts from the book. Sometimes, she doesn't show up to class.
Great person but the class was a bad experience. We watched a lot of movies which surprisingly became annoying and rather unhelpful. Most of the time we did nothing/go off topic in class and hardly any assignments were assigned which made it difficult if you didn't do well on them.
Took her online class. She sounded like an interesting person, but not a great instructor. Easy class but I didn't learn much, because I didn't get detailed/helpful feedbacks from her. Take her class if you want to just pass, but if you do want to learn something, and don't mind working hard, definitely avoid her class.
Ms. Madden is awesome, witty, has a good sense of humor, and very approachable when seeking help, the topics we discussed in class are perfect for the critical writing aspect of the course! I had fun.
I took the online English 101B class. DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS/PROFESSOR. She is a harsh grader and never explains why she gave me low grades. (I know I can write, I've received all A's in my other English classes) On top of that, when I email her with questions she gave me back rude one-word responses. NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. AVOID THIS TEACHER.
Lots of reading and group work, but nothing too bad. Regular writing assignments but, again, nothing too bad. Professor is cool and tells stories and keeps the class interesting.
I dropped this class because she showed us a blaxploitation movie the first week of class without explaining to us how it related to class. I think there was no explanation because there was no reason. I'd like to note this movie had unsimulated sex scenes and it was my very first class in my first semester in college. I was shocked.
Has cancelled class 4 times so far (1/2 through semester).Hard to follow. Not very clear on assignments
This is probably the lamest teacher that I have had in college. She seems to have a million other things going on besides teaching. The assignments are not clear at all. This is the only teacher to give me failing grades on my papers. I have had other teachers review prior to turning in and I still fail? What gives? Stay away, she is tough!
I would like to thank this teacher for one wasted semester. she cancelled class six times, when she was there she was late, and she failed to mention that we could rewrite our essays. I finally met a teacher who cared less than the students. The only thing she cared about was handing out enough Bs and Cs to give the impression that she was tough.
Her essays and the way she grades them make me want to jump off a bridge. We haven't turned ANYTHING else in because she doesn't care about them, so our grades ride almost exclusively on the in-class essays. She doesn't mark up your essays with comments- what little she does write is extremely vague. NOT helpful.
Worst teacher ever. I am a straight A student and received nothing but bad grades in her class. This teacher is not helpful at all and if she ever replies to your concerns, she does so very passive-agressively. Her attitude is not only unprofessional as a Professor but unhelpful as her student. Learned nothing. What a waste of a semester and money.
Seriously, this class is an easy A. Take what you have learned in 101a and it will be EASY. So what if most of our grade is based on the papers we write? It' an english class! Plus we get extra points for discussion boards. This is college people, if you want your hand held I suggest you go back to preschool.
Quite possibly the most unprofessional, biased, rude, and incompetent teacher at Ohlone. She does not grade fairly, takes more than half a semester to grade the first assignment, and is so aggressive in her online class emails, it's revolting. She has no business teaching.
I am a straight A student and she gave me a B- for the first 2 page essay assignment with no feedback. Giving a low score for the first of 3 essays is apparently her trend. Your grade is basically based on those essays. Discussions don't matter. I got an A in the end but didn't learned anything. Textbooks are not mandatory. She is also very lazy.
Hands down the most inconsistent professor I've ever had. She makes you post on the discussion board weekly, but in the end never grades them. Bases the whole class around 3 very short essays, which I'm not even sure she grades. She just slaps around C's and B-'s like it's nothing, without feedback. Does not have spellcheck apparently.
WORST ENGLISH TEACHER EVER. A DISGRACE TO THE ENGLISH LITERATURE. HER CLASS WAS COMPLETE BS. SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO GRADE NOR TEACH. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DO NOT.
ABSOLUTE TERRIBLE.
ATROCIOUS. NO SHE DID NOT TEACH ME THAT WORD. IN FACT IN HER CLASS I LEARNED NOTHING. NOTHING. NADA. NAH. NO.
the worst teacher ever.
She is generally a overall nice person, but she really just cannot teach. Her online class is not necessarily hard persay, but rather it's her teaching that is not good. I don't even know if she even bothers trying to improve her online course, it just sucks. However, the course is not hard though, if you try you will definitely pass the class.
(Hybrid Class) 100% Essay Grade. Essays based off of select movies/novels, about 4/5 essays per sem. Essay avg. length 3 pgs. Grading not too hard as long as question answered clearly & MLA format followed. Weekly discussions on Blackboard, not mandatory/graded but def. helps understanding. Lectures are interesting. Participate & discuss in class!
She's a really lazy teacher, but her class overall is really easy if you put the effort into the course. There is a lot of reading and writing, but you can do it. Put the effort into the course and you will succeed.
Professor Madden has you read different literature throughout the course, and she basically leaves you to yourself for the class. It's an online class, so assignments are posted, and it's up to you do to get them completed. The assignments are not tough, and you can always ask her for help whenever needed.
Professor Madden's online class was alright, I feel as if people don not like her because there isn't much class interaction. You just do your assignments by the due date and that's really it. You gotta keep up with the readings as well, there are a lot. It's more writing with a focus on much much more readings. The class is not hard though, try.
I have Professor Madden for 101B in class. and it's alright. She comes to class prepared, at least I think so. She's a friendly professor, who is helpful whenever needed. You can always ask her for help and she is willing. The workload isn't tough or too much, but you really just gotta stay on top of the readings to succeed. Take her class, try it.
Keep up by checking online every other day. I missed the 1st essay, but she was nice enough to let me turn it in late (-10% though). If you need help, go to her office hours, she'll explain what she looks for in essays. I was lucky to get a B, even though I got a lower than a C on my first 2 essays. 4 essays total + discussions. Not so bad :^)
She was a very nice lady, despite not originally having signed up to take her, the class wasn't all too bad. She was helpful whenever needed, and it seemed as if she cared enough to get through the semester. The readings and assignments weren't all too bad, it was decent enough.
She is a really friendly lady, I'm unsure as to why she has a low rating. She is very nice and helpful whenever asked, and she does try her best to relay the information provided. Her class is not too hard if you try, you can easily pass the class. Not to much of a hard grader, it's more of understanding the material and relaying it on the essays.
Really boring class, but if you do the work you'll pass. I took a hybrid class (one short lecture/week the rest online). Discussion boards aren't mandatory and class felt like filler that could have been skipped. Watching movies and reading the book was time consuming. She is very nice and occasionally funny though. I liked her, just not the class.
She's a nice lady, nut not too good at lecturing, but the class isn't as hard as you think. She gives a lot of writing assignments, but then again this is an English class. She doesn't grade too hard, but you still have to show some sort of understanding of the material through your writing. Go to her office hours in the lab to get help.
I have her for English 101C and it is a hybrid class and the workload is not to much nor is it really too much. She is a nice lady and I would recommend her if you are looking for an easy professor, she doesn't grade too difficult and she has office hours in the English Learning Center. We have discussions online on Canvas and it's not a bad class.
Madden is a very laid back professor, the class itself is not hard as her grading is fair and not hard. She is very nice, but just doesn't care to much if you learn much. The reading is simple if you put your mind to it and stay focused, you'll be fine throughout the course. The key is to stay dedicated and focused throughout the entire semester.
As a student who is in the 101C class, she is a very decent yet funny English instructor. In the middle of this semester, her standards are not too high. All she asks is consideration of the class, material, participation all while meeting once a week. If you are a decent essay composer, I insist on taking her. Just watch for common grammar errors.
She's not a hard grader if you understand what she is asking of you. If you put the effort into the class you will do just fine. If you are looking for a class that is not intensely hard, then this could be the class for you. Read the material carefully and you will be well on your way to getting a passing grade in her class. It's not hard.
I took her online class and it was very unorganized. Assignments that were supposed to be assigned a certain week were put up about a week later which made the workload even heavier. She also never replied to any emails which caused me to miss a 100 point exam!! I wouldnt suggest taking her online class.
Honestly one of the calmest classes I have ever taken. You read the book, and when you're done, there's a discussion. You comment on the discussion and you're done. The exams were just essays, for which the prompts were basically just the discussion board questions again. I had 5 classes this semester and English was the best . TAKE IT TRUSTME
Well she is a lazy teacherand inaccessible. It is difficult to reach her outside of class and especially through e-mail. She does not provide good feedback. Worst of all, she (accidentally?) gives zeroes for assignments that are submitted that are hard to fix because she is inaccessible, so be sure to double-check your grade if you take her.
Madden's class is very manageable. If you actually read the books/watch the movies, then making quality discussion posts is easy. It doesn't take a whole lot of time, either. All her exams are 2 hour online essays. Usually the prompts are somewhat related to discussions; just review the novel/movie and you'll be fine. Decent amount of effort A.
almost every week you'll have to read and participate in discussion which isn't too bad. there are 4 timed essays that are 2 hours, so there are no big research paper or anything. she also gets you to watch some movies too, like the matrix. if you consider your writing skills to be proficient you should have no problem getting an A.
I did not enjoy her class. She spent all of the lectures talking about current events and not the class material. Her whole class revolves around BLM and lesbian and gay rights. She requires too much reading and her grading is strict.
Super easy A. Discussions in class engaging and interesting but dont take if strong leftist ideology or politics turn you off. But it's worth it tbh. Minimal hw which usually are discussions. Will have to read. Essays graded under decent difficulty. Will always give feedback on ur assignments. As long as u dont slack, u get a certain A. Solid pick
Sometimes bad, but most times good!
I enjoyed Prof. Madden's class; it mostly involved discussions about leftist politics, which I don't mind. Two books are used in class - one of which is used in the final. Pretty easy A, as long as you do the work. Only thing is she is a little slow at grading and gives unclear directions so make sure to read the syllabus :)
For the Spring Term 2021, she's good but sometimes bad on essays until April!
I greatly enjoyed Professor Madden's class. It was asynch so it mostly consisted of weekly assignments, discussions and essays with some fun assignments like writing a rap, and current events presentation. She assigned some terrific books for us to read and provided some fun and interesting films for us to watch. Glad I took this class with Madden.
This professor posts very vague instructions for assignments, but doesn't grade the assignments too harshly. Class material is mostly based on leftists like Rachel Maddow and their talking points, and there are some movies and books you need to analyze which are not too complex, but it isn't too hard. On the easier end of college english courses.
Very lenient grading. Also quite nice, would take again
She doesn't give very good instructions to assignments. Takes forever to grade things.
Most assignments are discussion posts based off of reading or movies. She does take a while to grade. Overall an easy class to take, only 3 essays in the whole semester.
Professor Madden's class is a mixed bag - the assignments can be time-consuming, but engaging with the material makes it worthwhile. Unstuck Study AI was a lifesaver for prep!
She does take long to grade things, class was very politicial but such a nice and caring professor. Easy class if you just pay attention.
Not sure why her rating is so low, I took Professor Madden in the spring, and I felt like It was super easy to pass the class. She organizes her modules where its super easy to read through rather than a whole much of modules scattered, shes caring and had a sense of humor. She does take a while to grade but I feel like this class was an easy A.
