This woman, if you have her, you should feel very fortunate. It's not often that we are able to learn from individuals of her experience. Her classes are stimulating and she is an excellent teacher. She's also short, spanish and cute, which is a plus. :)
I learned very little in this class. I had relearn everything in conducting 2.
The list of orchestras she conducted is longer than an arm. She is very experienced and very good at what she does. But she is also very, very strict and precise, and at times she can be too tough. Getting an A with her is rarer than gold.
She is great, she is the best.
She is the absolute best. TAKE HER.
Carmen is a fantastic teacher. You'll learn all the fundamentals of conducting, for sure. Taking her for cond 1 made cond 2 so much easier. Highly recommended.
I could hardly understand why she was so mean to me.
I feel lucky to learn conducting with such a professional, clear and fair teacher as Carmen. She is simply fantastic

İ learned a lot with Carmen Moral. She is an excellent teacher, you can feel her experience in her way of explaining, her beautiful gesture. She is a real Maestra!
she is simply the best, take her!!!
what a woman... she's passionate, very precise, and she makes conducting into a real art form. Carmen really cares about the subject and makes sure u have the info u need. she's incredibly helpful if u're willing to learn and take in everything she has to say.
She's amazing!!! Take her if you want to learn!
great teacher, great conductor!
Fantastic!
With her The Rite of Spring becomes an easy piece!
The best teacher I ever had.
I enjoy her classes greatly.
Very helpful professor.
Wow! She is so good
Evering is so easy with her
If you really want to learn take her class. I highly recommend her. Besides she is so kind and very generous with her time.
Had conducting 1 and 2 with her. She's the best. You have to study, but take her if you want to learn.
Wonderful class!
I never have had such a fantastic teacher
Honestly, I can't understand why people say she is great.
Sorry that paragraph didnt make sense down there, what I'm saying is she's a fine conductor BUT she'll teach you nothing else than how to conduct those music that you do in class, that is, in her way. As opposed to giving you the ability to analyze scores and do it on your own.
She will teach you everything to continue by yourself. Wonderful teacher!
She was helpful for the man who didn't prepare for the class. On the other hand, she was really rude to me. She poked only me by her baton. Really rude as a human being.
Maestra Moral is a wonderful teacher.
Excellent !
Moral is a very capable professor.
This class is a very good one
Strict, but good teacher. She instills fear of public humiliation within you to get you to practice. It works and I was never nervous for tests. She's crazy, but good. I'd take from her again.
She is the best teacher ever! Great
She is like my mom. A great conductor, and it's really comfortable to be in her class. She loves her students.
Very detail teacher & highly demanding at the same time. You need to practice to do well in this course, if not then prepare to be scolded a lot. She teaches rather slowly but in a very clear manner. Listen carefully to what she taught and you will get a lot of this course. Not an easy grader as well, especially if you did not practice enough
If you really want to learn study with her.
An excellent inside into the materials. Very clear. She teaches you why thing have to be done in a certain way. A+++++
This is a fantastic class
HORRIBLE TEACHER. COULDN'T STAND HER CLASS.
Carmon must come on this website and give herself good ratings. Cause she was awful. and no one in my class liked her.
I've played under a lot of conductors and what can I say - She is a conductor! - ie rude, picky, condescending, makes favorites. If you practice she'll ignore you, if you don't she'll humiliate you.
I have class with her in 2 hours. It's a constant cycle or stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down. She talks as if we know nothing about reading music beyond notes and rhythms, and she doesn't give a ten minute break between hours. I'm going to take my chances with another conducting professor rather than take her again. No question
Professor Moral is a fantastic teacher. It is a pleasure to study with her. Thank you Carmen!
precis, helpful, generous;excellent experience!
Professor Moral is very patient with us.Fair grader. I love this class.
In the beginning she seems harmless and nice but when it comes time to grading, she shows her true colors. In my opinion, she does not grade fairly or accurately. ( ie. If you think you deserve a certain grade, expect to get two letter grades lower than that). At times, she can be disrespectful to students, including myself.
Prof Moral is strict and no-nonsense. She enforces discipline in the classroom. Her teaching is clear and concise. Don't expect her to praise you. You will learn a lot from this great woman. If you are interested in Conducting, take her.
She initially comes off as friendly, but it quickly becomes clear that she's simply insulting you with a smile. She definitely picks favorites and will literally have the class give them a round of applause before tearing the next poor volunteer to pieces. Plus all you learn is it imitate how she conducts specific pieces, not how to apply skills.
Great!
Carmen is great!
Good teacher. Please just remember to practice if you take her, or you will be greeted with plenty of critical remarks. The people who have trashed her probably never worked outside of class- if that's your plan, avoid her! No textbook requirement which is excellent.
The way she conducts is amazing. You won't need to buy any material (only a baton and two pencils). If you like conducting you will LOVE her classes. Even if you don't like conducting, her class is the best you can take compared to others.
I took Cond 1 with her last sem. I'm in Cond 2 with another teacher now and I realised I learned nothing in her class. This class is basically a military drill of obeying her instructions and orders. If you copy and mimic exactly what she does in class, you get an A. If you actually value your education and you want to be learn, look elsewhere.
Stay away if you don't want to see your hard work go down the drain with her.
good professor
She covers a lot of material but she's very talented and will help you learn the material if you put in the work. Not an easy A, but you'll learn a lot
Brilliant conductor who also has the patience to show amateurs conducting technique. She is demanding, but those demands can be easily met by practicing 30minutes a day and paying close attention in class. If you don't want to work hard or if you think conducting is lame, then yes, you will be miserable. Excellent teacher and highly recommended.
stay away if you don't want to be insulted.
this lady is the worst professor I've ever met in berklee. all she does is showing how she conducts a piece and forcing the students by insulting their dignity to imitate it. I am in 6th semester now, and never got under B(there's not even a B-) but what I got for this class was C, which only means that she didn't like my personality. THAT IS IT.
I learned nothing at all in her class.
Literally, the worst teacher I've ever met in my whole life. period.
Best Teacher I ever had.
Fact: her classes are much more intense compare to the others. Opinion: that being said, the classes are not helpful at all.
Great teacher
I just finished Conducting 2 with Eric Stern last semester. He was a fantastic teacher, but made you work hard. I got an A in the class. I took Conducting 1 two semesters earlier with Moral and got a C. Literally laughed and mocked a girl who was crying in class because she was struggling. I did EXACTLY what Moral said for the final and got a D.
you are gonna learn NOTHING, put more time and effort than your classes for your major, get B- for the best and SERIOUSLY HUMILIATED in her class
Very useful cours
Would surely recommend her as a teacher. Just spend 15 minutes a day practicing what she's taught. Plus, for Conducting 1, she provides the textbook.
Carmen made my last semester a total nightmare. please stop abusing students. they pay $30k a semester and expect better attitude from professors. Carmen, who do you think yourself are? you don't have authority to be so mean to students. maybe you watched movies and TV too much. it's real life, no one will eventually respect you as a human being.
this grandma is out of mind.
she is a terrible person.
I've never conducted in my life and Carmen is so understanding. Yes she's tough and she will call you out if you're unprepared. Quit whining, yall who gave her bad reviews probably didn't put the time in practicing. Also she gives you the scores so you don't need to print them. Practice and go to office hours if needed and you'll be fine.
Ver y clear and strict
She tries to make others feel bad when you're struggling, I strongly recommend that you don't take her
Gotta be the worst conducting professor at Berklee.
Wonderful teacher
Carmen teaches you how to conduct, unlike some other teachers who let you do what ever you want with your hands. If you love conducting, and wish to study it the right way, take Carmen.
She knows her stuff. But I do not think she is a good teacher. Way to strict for conducting one. If you want someone who is intense take her.
She is wonderful
Excellent
Reallyyyyy tried to like her but she roasts the whole class all class, is not afraid to fail people and is low key really rude. Dont recommend for conducting one, only plus is no text book
Let's be real honest here... Not all of us are here as conducting majors nor composition/cwp, for many of us conducting as a subject isn't the most important thing in the world at the moment! I respect someone who'd teach with passion but that doesn't mean making fun of students who couldn't put 20hrs a week for an unimportant side subject. wake up
No intention of racism or anything here.. as an international student it was really hard to get her saying in terms of pronunciation. she's heavy with Spanish accent and couldn't keep it up with her lectures.. To be fair, my friends from America/whose first language is English didn't have any problem with that.. just people like me had this problem
This teacher knows what she is doing. Excelent professor and person.
Carmen is amazing! She is extremely knowledgable about conducting. She breaks things down so that they're super understandable and easy to grasp. She is the reason I feel comfortable conducting the entire last movement of Rite of Spring, which is actual *heck* to conduct. Also very witty. Takes no crap. Highly recommend her!!!
I suppose she's not for everyone, wants you to conduct exactly how she does it. But I didn't know thing about conducting, so it was all the same to me; and as she puts it: after you've gained some proficiency, you'll adapt it anyway you like
She is a very good teacher. You only have to put in minimal effort by paying attention in class and practicing maybe once a week tops to get an A. She also doesn't make you buy the textbook which is really nice.
She is a wonderful teacher and person
Carmen is amazing she's a little scary up front but if you show up pay attention and respect her she respects you and youll get a decent grade. I am no where near a conductor and I dreaded this class but she made it enjoyable enough for me to want to do well
Carmen at first is intimidating, but you will quickly understand her sense of humor and be so intrigued. I didn't care about conducting I only took it because we have to and taking it with Carmen has been amazing. I have learned so much. I would take her for all courses she teaches if I could. The best teacher in the conducting department.
Please don't take this professor she can't teach and she always gives bad grades to everyone
Carmen is a professional!
i think she's very inspired by the movie Whiplash, without realizing you can't do that in real life...
Carmen is a good teacher, Very caring, and has great sense of humor. She's definitely not for everyone and I probably wouldn't take her again. She wants you to conduct an identical style to hers, and teaches at a pace that feels like your in conducting 2 as opposed to 1. However she did make conducting fun with her jokes, its all about preference.
She is very passionate about teaching, and if you show that you are trying, she will help you get to A level.
As long as you participate and come to class there is not much outside work that is necessary. She explains everything very clearly and makes sure everyone is ready for the exams. Plus! You don't have to buy the $150 text book!!! She provides all the scores online and you just have to print them.
Carmen, while seemingly tough to some students, was great for conducting 1. She did not let anything slide, but had a great sense of humor and constantly engaged the class. I think I would not have learned nearly as much under another professor, as she stressed the importance of accuracy. Peruvian grandma vibes, I loved her
Worst experience at Berklee yet. I cant believe it I paid thousands of dollars then I got this. Completely waste my time.
This was the very first conducting class I ever took, but Professor Moral expects everybody to be on her level. I found that I was doing less learning and more being talked down to for not knowing as much as she does. She's very knowledgeable, but a terrible teacher. Avoid her class if you can.
She teaches the material thoroughly and clearly, answers all questions with absolute clarity, and consistently ensures that all the material of the class has been gone over dozens of times so there is no room to be lost. The assignments were not stressful whatsoever, taking 10 minutes a day, and still very supportive of the curriculum.
She is Great
If you dont do things her way, you will not pass. Very old fashioned professor. Disappointing to experience at Berklee. I transferred to this school specifically to avoid professors like this.
Borderline abusive. "Erratic" would be an understatement. She has no business in a profession that requires her to interact with others.
Great. Fantastic teacher !
Requires you to conduct with the exact motions she wants and makes you mark your music in the exact way she wants. Hard to understand her class, definitely not recommended.
She is great!
She is actually the funniest person on the planet! I am convinced she's immortal omg I love her! She also is rlly passionate but just ask questions with confidence, she can be a bit tough and scary but she does definitely mean well if you show you care!
she cool
Professor Moral is very passionate about music and conducting. She can be difficult to people who are not putting in much effort into the course but as long as you show up and do the work, she is pleasant.
Wonderful teacher!
Someone is making fake reviews about this professor and negative reviews are getting deleted. I don't know how this has happened as several negative reviews from the past year (mine included) have been deleted. That being said, she's a bully. Plain and simple. knowledgable and experienced, but will berate students and pass it off as a joke.
She is very passive-aggressive with all the students, you cannot even look at your phone to see what time is it before she yells at you for looking your phone during class time. On the midterm, she just gave me my grade and when I asked her where exactly did I make a mistake she just told me that there was no time for that I wouldn't take her again
I don't like her way of teaching, she is too aggressive with their students. I luckily had some conducting experience before but she was very harsh towards students with less experience. I wouldn't recommend
Carmen Moral is talented but kind of a bully. It's a shame to see students who are struggling in class but clearly want to learn and then she just publicly humiliates them. Her teaching style is not effective and most students only learn the material by watching her videos on ol. A 42 page score for a final is just unfair compared to other classes.
She's aggressive and will not hesitate to make fun of students who are struggling in front of class. Teaches in a confusing way.
Outside of class, Carmen is a nice person, but she is not a great Professor. She is super old school. She once canceled our class 15 minutes in because some of us had our 30 page score on iPads. She also give students absolutely no freedom when it comes to conducting, you will only learn how to conduct exactly like HER. Not a fun class!
I've heard good things from people I trust about Carmen, so I was disappointed to experience what I did with her. Found many reasons to condescend to the class, even after being absent for two weeks. We were to copy her and watch videos of her conducting; insufficient material. May be better to meet with&understand directly, 1 on 1. Awk/unpleasant
The classroom environment is extremely awkward. She doesn't interact with her students during lectures and rarely offers individual feedback. The only feedback we receive is insults to her student's intelligence and doesn't help our learning or understanding. The class has very vague grading criteria. Don't take this class if you want to learn.
I took Carmen for cond1 and cond2 because she is kind to those she already knows. Do not ask her questions, she will get frustrated and you will leave feeling more confused. Perform, write, and do everything exactly how she does or she will get upset. She provides videos of herself conducting to practice along with. Not tech savvy at all.
Thought that conducting just wasn't for me until I retook this course with a different professor, and enjoyed it a lot more. Carmen gives no opportunity for individual feedback, if you miss any classes it will be very hard to catch up. Do not recommend.
This was the worst academic experience I've had at Berklee, and in recent memory. Carmen comes off as adversarial to her students, berating them for asking questions, and publicly belittling people who are not naturally good or experienced with conducting. The classroom feels hostile. Instruction is sluggish and monotonous, yet still confusing.
This class with Carmen can be hit or miss. While she's knowledgeable, the rigid teaching style and lack of flexibility frustrate many students. Using tools like unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of the challenging material and dense assignments.
She is the best
Please do yourselves a favor and avoid taking class with this professor. You have to conduct exactly like she does, and she does not explain the purpose of conducting, which made studying it feel like a chore. I've switched to a different instructor for COND2 and realized how fun it can be after only one class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, YOU CAN WAIT ANOTHER SEMESTER!!! I usually would not take the time to get on here and rate a teacher but I have to warn everyone about this lady. She is the rudest, most mean spirited teacher I have had at Berklee. She gets so passive aggressive when people ask questions and belittles them. Conduct her way or fail.
Carmen Moral is the worst professor I have ever had. She creates hostile class environment. If she's having a bad day, everyone is. Don't bother asking her any questions, she'll just get confused. You have to conduct exactly how she does as if its a choreography, and if she doesn't like how you take notes on your own score, your grade will suffer.
Carmen Moral is an ok conducting teacher. She knows what she's doing and will correct your conducting giving solid feedback. She is very nice and funny, but takes things slow. The first half of the semester was a drag, but then it got better. Her language barrier sometimes makes communication difficult, otherwise overall pretty good teacher.
I've never sat through such a boring lecture in my life—it was downright hypnotic.
I don't get the backlash — she seems really nice. She explains topics through stories and isn't as strict as she seems. If you try and pay attention, you'll do well. Sometimes she misunderstands questions, but overall, she's a good professor.
There is no homework only the midterm and the final and if either of those are failed she wont pass you. Her english is very broken and if you arent a fluent spanish speaker its hard to understand her. She is very passionate but rude to students and her classroom does not feel like a safe space for mistakes. She does not like slow paced learning
the worst professor at berklee and probably the worst teacher i've ever had. she is a bully, plain and simple. i have never seen a teacher act so condescending over people just asking for clarification. so sad that people like this teach at berklee or any college
Carmen is the best conducting teacher at Berklee.
I've never written one of these before but Carmen Moral is a terrible teacher and not a nice lady. She doesn't like students that ask questions or don't understand her the first time she says something, and she speaks in a heavy accent. She was just awful to me and did not care how much I cared about my grade, incredibly discouraging
Please don't take this professor. She straight up humiliates students and would speak Spanish in class. Only nice to those who speaks spanish. Heavy accent, not approachable, no freedom on how you conduct at all and I believe that she is too old to still be teaching.
Carmen Moral is by far the worst professor I've ever taken. She is a snooty person who expects perfection out of a Core Curriculum requirement, and will describe your performance as "disgusting" if you make even a simple mistake. This woman isn't worth an expired Arby's Coupon, let alone your hard earned tuition money. Trust me...pick someone else.
