Very very very disorganized. Needs to get her act together and be taught how to teach a course! Her thoughts are all over the place and no proper direction for students. Very hard marker on assignments.
VERY disorganized, rambles on, contradicts herself, spouts off ideas without backing them up. This woman turned me off social work for good (even after I had been woking in the field for 7 years). I guess I should be thanking her.
a wonderful course and an exceptional teacher.
I am starting to now understand how to approach social work.
Her thoughts are as unorganized as others have claimed, and worse yet, she pretends to have an open mind, a claim she disproves with every sarcastic an dcritical remark she makes.
She is an outstanding teacher who makes you think.
Carmen has opened my mind, and I really thank her for what she has taught me. SHe is a brilliant woman and a kind person
What a great course. She is an outstanding teacher. She allows you to develop how to think versus what to think. The best course I ever took
She has expanded my view of the world. I will never see things in the same way again. Thanks Carmen
A great course. I didn't realize how much I learned until it was finished.
carmen is one of the best professor that i have ever comes across at yourk university, a women if integrity. she is brillent and knews her material. it is throught the teaching of professor Carmen that i have a deeper understanding of social work. if a student don't understaning carmen it's because they themselves do not understand social work.
Carmen is very knowledgeable professor. I learmed a lot from her.
I am amazed as to how much I learned so quickly. It is one of the best courses I ever took.
an inspirational course.
I have never been in a class were everyweek we talk as a class as a whole. It is an unbelievable experience. I also like that she is not afraid to admit she struggles with the material.
Horrible experience, I will never take another class with her again. She is opinionated and very stuck in her perceptions and beliefs. Many times she let us go early because she was tired!? Unbelievable.
I found Carmen to be the best professor I have ever had. She was authentic and human. I liked how she go people to interact with each other. I keeping thinking abou the things we discussed in class. It stays with you.
I had you for 240 and loved you. Were are you.I really missy your ability to get me to think and see things in a different way.
A very useful course. It real makes you awake to what is really going on.
This was one of the most useful course I have ever taken. I learned so much.
I took Carmen's course three years ago and it is one of the courses that stays with you. I didn/t totally get it until I realized that Carmen wants you to be real about peoples lives.
A great great teacher and mentor. I recommend her courses highly. I took all the courses she has taught.
Very inspiring. Taught me how to think critically. She is a repository of knowledge
She is amazing. You experience a change in yourself because she opens you mind and heart. She is passionate and authentic.
What an amazing course and teacher. I learned alot and grew alot personally and professionally. She really cares about students.
I love this course. I am so happy I took it with Carmen. I sit and am in awe of her. She is not afraid to use her own experiences to demonstrate how she learned. She has mucho experience and it shows. Best of all she is human and kind.
I agree with people. I have loved this course. I feel sad it is over. She is very encouraging and helpful. She is also brilliant. I am amazed at how much she knows.
I also agree with people this was one of the best courses I every took. She was amazing.the process was also enlightening.I am truly grateful for the learning experience. I hope to take another course with her.
I just stared taking this course. I have learned more in 5 classes then I did in Two whole courses. I am really grateful to be in the class.
She is a great person but not so great a teacher. Every class all we did was watch youtube videos that had nothing to do with the course content. she was vague in what she wanted from the papers. I learned more about her daughter and her dog than i did about the course content.
I agree with the person who said I learned more in a few classes then I learned in three previous courses together. I love her style. She is so human.
I feel sad the course is finishing. I have learned alot and feel like I have a connection with the whole class. Wow A great teacher
what a great course. I learned alot of how to think about child welfare. We did assignments that actually taught me about practice. Carmen is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I am now taking a summer course and I must say I miss her class.
I learned so much in this course you need to take it with Carmen
I graduated and in my practice it is caremn;s course I think about the most. It really prepared me to face reality but believe that we can transform and really make changes if it is even one small thing at the time. She helped me be a better person
After my first class with Carmen I started to jump up and down I know it is going to be a great course. She is so natural, kind and clear.
Carmen is a thoughtful and caring person. In every lecture she integrates that perspective to be a good social worker. I learned so much in her and she's a great professor. There were times when the nature of assignments were not clear however, she is very accommodating and understanding.
Carmen is probably one of the best professor I ever had. The class had a safe and inclusive culture. I would take any course with her.
Carmen is a very kind woman and very understanding. However, there is only so many youtube videos one can watch and actually understand the concept. Also, assignment requirements are very unclear. Receiving an email response is unlikely, helpful only in person which is usually too late if you're stuck in the moment.
Carmen is intelligent, but she is a bit of a show off about what and who she knows. If you have specific questions about SW, she likely will have the answers to you! Carmen conducts her class in a casual way, it often trails off to irrelevant topics. Also, don't expect her to respond to emails or be organized about her assignments.
I was inspired in Carmen's class. She used the class itself as a resource. I found that I learned a lot in her class and hope to take another one.
Her assignments are tough due to unclarity. She is very understanding of student circumstances and I think she truly cares for her students. However, do not bother emailing her as she was not reply to you for weeks at a time, or will reply with a lousy response.
I found Carmen to be an excellent teacher. She really made me think about why I am in social work. I highly recommend her as a teacher. I found her very clear.
Wow what a great course
She is one of the best professor I ever had.
very emotional.. Talks about her daughter alot.
Carmen is a nice and great person, and probably an excellent social worker, but I found her instruction style very confusing. Assignments often unclear and required wasting time going over outlines over and over, grading criteria seems to shift, and lecture slides often didn't make sense. Course content repeats a lot of other core courses.
I have mixed feelings about Carmen as a lecturer. At heart, she is a good person, you can tell she cares about social issues. Her assignments are extremely confusing and bizarre, she tends to be very redundant. Too many YouTube videos. Sometimes felt like brainwashing. This class taught me "what" to think, rather than "how" to think.
Carmen is a great person and you can tell she iswas a great social worker too. Her lectures are often all over the place and her assignments can come off as unclear. She will always help you out if you approach her in class or via email.
she is very well organized, and always ready for the lectures. she is very approachable and helpful. she is very respectful. she is amazing.
Carmen allows students to be a part of their work, by giving assignment details that have room for interpretation. This format has allowed for substantial personal discovery and growth. Carmen is very caring and easily approachable. I would highly suggest taking her class!
Amazing professor! I would highly suggest taking SOWK 3060 with Carmen as she allows for students to be a part of their own work - instead of being dictated on what to write or do for assignment. She does give direction when needed, but she is very forgiving and flexible. Highly suggested Prof!
If you get this professor I suggest you switch sections, you will find her lectures difficult to follow and NEVER relate to the topics and her assignments are extremely difficult mainly because they are NEVER clear. Be prepared to always ask for clarification, she is always willing to explain if you ask which is good but she's a tough marker.
I would never want to be in one of her classes again. She is not only transphobic, but assumes that marginalized people need to call out harmful behaviours instead of herself stepping up and educating others. I have left the class many times shaken by things she has said. She also talks about large theories without ever defining them.
She is the most unorganized professor I've ever had to deal with.
Carmen is a very friendly professor; all you need is to read, be in class on time, participate and you will make it big time. Furthermore, she is never tired of explaining, you may ask her as many questions as you wish, or request as many feed back as you wish; be it in class or via her e-mail; she will respond to you. Carmen is passionate .
Carmen is a wonderful professor. She is a genuine social worker. She wants to engage in students life and relate that back to the course which is very important for sw students. She is very caring and you can ask for help anytime and she is always there to help you. She will never criticize you and open for various interpretations.
Carmen is amazing! she's a professor, however she's more as a friend. She is extremely supportive, friendly and caring. Her assignment are not only about theory, she focus on you and our own experiences as a way to express yourselves and connect your own experiences to social work. She's super supportive and shows her support with pride solidarity.
Carmen is a wonderful person and an excellent Social Worker. I found her lectures eye-opening, personal and intriguing. She is a very hard marker and her guidelines for assignments are vague and confusing. More specific expectations would've helped. At times she may take a while to get back to emails. Overall, I enjoyed her class!
Probably one of the worst profs I've ever had. She was really boring, repeated herself a lot and her slides were basically the readings. It was torture getting through her class and she often made offensive remarks but didn't even realize, which for a social work professor was unacceptable . Would never take her courses again.
Though she is a bit scattered at times, I did well in this class with her support. I would definitely take a class that she teaches again.
I had Carmen for a child welfare course and I will never recommend her to any student. She was the worst prof I had in my entire BSW program. The class was boring and her grading criteria were very focusing. Expect not to do well in her class if you write anything contrary to her personal opinions. She imposed her opinions about the CWS on students
Worst Professor Ever! Her "feedback" and "guidelines" for papers never make any sense, and she will fail you without a second thought. She often comments that the entire class needs to work on our spelling/grammar, but she sends emails that make absolutely no sense and have the spelling and grammar of a child. Will never admit when she is wrong.
Carmen is a real gem of a professor, perhaps being taken for granted! She is extremely supportive. Her analyses is outstanding. If you do minimum and expect the maximum, just don't bother. Be SERIOUS. Do the readings, incorporate them in the papers. Be CRITICAL. I treasure her A+ so much because she is a life changer and among the best of the best!
Carmen is a horrible professor. She does not care about her students at all. She does not teach much during lectures but expects students to write multiple 10 page papers. The assignment instructions and her feedback always contradict each other. Expect her to say micro, meso and macro the entire semester. She does not answer emails for a few days.
Carmen is a very friendly professor, but her lectures are long and dense from the content but also from the stories she tells. Horrible at responding to emails and does not provide much one-on-one assistance. Pay attention to how she likes things written and her ideas because you'll get a better grade if you write about ideas she agrees with.
Carmen is a true gem - she is not the typical lecturer, she shares stories that are relevant to social work practice. If you are unclear, or are struggling with your assignment, see Carmen before/after class, she is incredibly helpful. Thank you for enhancing my university experience Carmen!
Honestly just participate, let Carmen know your around and your listening to what shes saying. Shes the best Professor ever Im taking her class again soon because I love her way of teaching, approaching students and the way she cares that much! She always answers emails on a regular basis and she will literally call you if you have questions!!
Carmen is a tough marker and does not provide clear feedback. However, she is a kind professor and will call you if you require extra support. If you can't switch out of her class, do your best to participate and make sure she knows who you are.
Horrible. Boring lectures, everyone in class was dying. Talks about repeated subject, especially daughter. Good soul, bad professor. Does not explain things clearly, Worst powerpoints filled with bunch of youtube videos. Overall boring, bad feedback, unhelpful, and repeated examples and concepts throughout entire semester.
If you value your mental health do not have Carmen I hate social work because of her she is unorganized petty and rude when you don't follow her criteria due to her confusion in lectures she rambles about non important stuff she is the worst teacher I have had at York university expect her to talk about Marco and meso she will be unclear
Please do yourself a favour and switch out of her class if you get her. Her lectures are long and boring and she goes on about irrelevant topics. She is not supportive of students and refuses to give extensions and does not have any leniency for missing classes. She is petty and rude and will give you bad marks if you do not follow her opinions
STAY AWAY! Boring Lectures will talk @ u 4 the ENTIRE 3 hours. DOES not explain assignments, yet has HIGH expectations. The outlines she gives for extra help, are even more confusing. Do urself a fav & avoid, save yourself.
Carmen is a very difficult grader. She is caring but has said some questionable things during lecture. Sometimes she goes on tangents about family and personal experiences, but I think this is her way of relating the material to real life.
Carmen is a very bias instructor. She judges students based on her own feelings towards them. She might not like you for no reason and that will show in your marks. you don't have to do well in your papers or participate in class for her to like you and for that reason she will give you a good mark just because she likes you. I will not recommend.
Carmen is extremely rude. Students will email her a question in a professional and polite manner and she will reply a week later with an incredible attitude. She gives poor marks and says if students are not satisfied with their grade they can retake the course next semester. I do not think she realizes that her course costs $1600 is a year long.
all I can say is stay away
Carmen has a boring teaching style and just reads her slides. She rambles on about irrelevant topics that she wants to talk about and will cut off and not listen to students. I recommend not to take her class if you don't have to because trying to get through 3hrs of her talking is brutal.
AVOID CARMEN'S COURSES AT ALL COSTS! She's rude, has a bad attitude, and doesn't genuinely care about students. She'll cut you off when sharing your concerns. Plus, she takes attendance twice, teaches the entire 3-hour class, is a harsh grader, and makes lectures incredibly dull. Save yourself the hassle and choose a different course.
STAY AWAY. This professor is rude. She is impossible to reach outside of class and her assignments are incredibly confusing. She will hurt your GPA more than help it.
just avoid for your own good
Lectures are the full 3 hours and are completely meaningless. She will repeat the same topics every class and never fail to make some questionable remarks and comments. Does not explain assignments , extremely harsh grader. Feedback is hard to seek as she takes days-weeks to respond to emails, and said responses are hardly literate.
Save yourself the sanity and don't take a course with her. She oversteps personal boundaries with countless emails, will ask you to drop the course, hunt you down for missing even a single class. Lectures are boring, she rambles on for the full 3 hours. I am so incredibly frustrated with this professor.
Avoid. Belligerent and unprofessional, hard to contact outside of class. Any response or feedback received is both unrelated, unreadable and unhelpful- filled with typos and unrelated jargon. Class spans 3 hours of repetition and conspiracy theories not related to the field or social work practice. Made an account just to warn of her.
The grading criteria for this course are unclear. There are no rubrics provided, and the feedback often does not align with the assignment outlines or the grades received. This makes it challenging to identify areas for improvement. When I asked to review feedback on a 60-grade assignment, I was told it was a good assignment so no need to discuss.
Carmen is absolutely horrific as a professor. She rants about unrelated topics, floods your inbox with random emails, and says extremely problematic comments while "teaching". She once used a slur in class as if that is completely normal behavior. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take her class if you can help it. She made me want to tear my hair out.
I am not sure what to say about Ms Carmen except she is very nice and annoying, she's given me multiple extensions on assignments, however, she's a very, tough grader and a lot of her assignment instructions are not clear. If you ask for her individually and ask about her comments she will just tell you to look at the slides. FYI NOT HELPFUL!!!!!!!
She was always prepared and her lectures were really interesting. She spent time with me when I did not understand something. I feel like I really expanded how I see things.
Carmen was inspirational. I appreciated wealth of professional experience. It added much & real-world view. She made herself available to support me, which made a big difference. Her teaching sparked a new interest & I'm now considering a career in child welfare. I was happy she centered Indigenous knowledge. It was eye-opening & empowering.
I really appreciated how Carmen took the time to provide feedback and suggestions in her marking. Her comments constructive, which helped me see where I could improve and grow. I feel like I learned a great deal. She went above and beyond by helping me get an interview for my paper, which made a big difference and my overall learning experience
I feel that I learned a lot. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. Appreciate her feedback and availability.
Wow—this course changed the way I see the world. Learning about the concept of Slow Death shifted my perspective and helped me better understand some people's struggles. It gave me new language and insight to think more critically and compassionately. I'm so glad I took this course—it's been a transformative experience.
This course really helped me understand how to apply theory in practice. The professor is the most knowledgeable I've ever had, and I deeply appreciated her support getting an interview for my assignment. Her classes are always engaging and insightful.
A great course.
I was initially unsure about doing my placement at CAS, but after taking her course, I'm really hoping that's where I'm placed. It's become such an interesting and exciting possibility.
I just finished the course, and as I reviewed my papers, I realized how much I actually learned. The course really helped me put the pieces together.
I ended up learning more than I initially thought. When I finished my last paper, everything finally came together—it helped me realize how much I had actually absorbed throughout the course.
I am blown away as to how much feedback Carmen gives. Learned alot.
I found this course was the course that helped me be ready for placement. I learned so much.
So glad I took this course it helped me put together all the other courses I had taken. Feel prepared for placement
She is the most knowledgable professor I ever had. Great course.
I think this is a must take course. I learned so much.
She's highly experienced in social work and teaching. Her lectures offer valuable insights into social work practice. She's very supportive and cares strongly about student's success. If you want an A just incorporate her feedback from previous assignments, write clearly, participate in class, and use the concepts and theories.
Better choose somebody else if you are taking SOWK3060. Very good at lectures and helpful, but really tough grader - very hard to get a good grade in her class, unclear and complicated assignment instructions, strict on attendance, ton of required readings and complicated assignments.
I found Carmen Perillo really fair. Learned alot and am looking forward to taking another class. Super smart.
I agree excellent lectures and a lot of experience in the field. She gives excellent feedback that is really helpful and helps you to improve. Really recommend this course.
I learned more then I thought I did at the time. Didn't really understand the course until. half way through. Happy with the support I got compared to other sections. I now feel ready for placment.
I am really grateful to Carmen. She did not give up on me but made sure I did my best work.
I am not taking another course and have come to appreciate the constructive and supportive feedback.
This is the one professor that you must take course with at the York U BSW program. She is very knowledgeable, especially in social welfare systems. You will have a brand new perspective after taking the course. Also, there might be a comment before that says she's transphobic, but she is not transphobic at all. She is very LGBTQ+ friendly.
Best professor I ever had.
I was happy I took this course. Carmen was supportive in helping me find an great interview. She is fair and caring.
She's a very non companionate and rude professor. This professor does not care for you just for her grades and ensuring ur in class. U can't get up to leave and she makes racist comments. You can't be on ur phone or laptop and she marks so hard. She pretends to care about you after she kicks you out of the class.
Carmen was so supportive and helped me out with my academic achievements. I'm Really happy
I found Carmen to be excellent. She cares about students and them succeeding. Highly recommend this course.
I definitely recommend taking courses taught by Carmen. She's incredibly knowledgeable, and I learned a lot in her class. If you attend and make use of the feedback she gives, you'll do well. She brings a lot of real-world experience from both teaching and practicing social work, which makes her courses really relevant and engaging.
I really appreciated what I learned in this course. She is a great professor.
Professor Perillo is an excellent teacher. She always has good powerpoints and goes over all the assignments.
Dr. Perillo is really knowledgable. She is available and answers emails quickly. She puts lots of good feedback on assignments.
I finally understand the role theory has in practice. I now understand why this course is a pre-request for placement.
The course in the program that I learned the most. It brought everything together for me.
A good course.
Be ready to learn a lot. It is not until the end that it all comes together. This course changed my life.
Carmen is well prepared. I find it nice not to worry about lots of notes because she does good powerpoint. I am learning about what is social work. Recommend this course.
I think this is one of the most intelligent, fair professor I ever had.
I just finished course and found that I learned so much more than I thought I would. Course is better taken in the fall the summer goes by fast. I feel better prepared for my placement. Highly recommend Carmen.
Dr. Perillo was a great professor. I agree with other reviews - be ready to learn a lot. She is super intelligent.
I am grateful I took this course. Learned so much.
The rating I give Professor Perillo is very high. I learned a lot and didn't realize how much until this term. I now feel more confident when it comes to my field placement. The professor was very responsive to students and prepared great slides that supported my learning.
One of the worst profs ive had.I'm skeptical of the overly positive reviews—they all sound the same. She just reads directly from the slides without adding any value, lectures are unclear, disorganized, hard to follow. Assignments are graded harshly, yet the instructions are vague/confusing. If you want to actually learn and not feel lost, AVOID.
Excellent teacher -I learned a lot
I found this course very useful and appreciated the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills. I enjoyed the content, though I was taking too many courses at once and couldn't fully concentrate. Overall, I liked the course.
