very hard to understand
great presentation and thorough instruction
Make sure u bring a pocket translator because you can't understand a word this lady is saying. I found her test to be a little hard being that you can't understand her when she's teaching
not even cheating off the smartest asian kid will save u in this class
Hard to understand but will help you, better to study together.
I thought that the class was not too hard. It is true that she is a bit hard to understans, but if you ask for her she will help you. the tests are easy if you study. Know your vocabulary for each chapter and I suggest you write you own notes out of the book.
I thought the class was real easy. All you have to do is pay attention and take notes. I understood her fine and she explains clearly and slowly.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR NOTHING IN THE WORLD!!! SHE DOES NOT KNOW HER MATERIAL! I'M SERIOUS SHE WAS LEARNING THE MATERIAL WITH THE STUDENTS AT THE SAME TIME SHE WAS TEACHING! SHE IS VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND HAS A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING YOU, PICK ANY OTHER TEACHER THAN THIS ONE!
horrible teacher, cant understand a word she says and her tests are impossible to pass
This woman can't speak English to save her life, and the tests are nothing like the notes or lectures. You better hope Jesus Christ will come down and take the test for you cause your not going to pass.
These are some ridiculous reviews, I understand her all right, even though sometimes it's a little crazy.. I find going to the lectures a lot better than reading the book and the tests were worded a little trickily at first, but essentially very easy. If you pay close attention, you're ok.
I'm horrible in math and I am passing this class. It is super easy just follow your notes and you'll do fine. I dropped finite math last semester and I decided to take this class and it was so much easier. Just pay attention in class.
Pretty good teacher, but having to finds proofs is just hard anyway you slice it. Nice lady though.
She didn't explain the work clearly and many times, the students became frustrated. Study with some classmates and/or friends who are good at math (if you aren't). I stuck with this class even though I thought I would fail but I passed. Good luck to those who take her. Try to get some outside help as well.
This woman barely could speak english and was very unwilling to help students outside of class time, she had no office hours. She treated everyone like they were children. It was difficult to remain in class the entire time becuase she would confuse even herself with her lessons.
stay away
youve got to be incompetent not to pass this class much less get an a. these people who rated her are all bitter bc they couldnt add or subtract if their lives depended on it. you dont even need the book..just you have to go to class, take her notes, and the quizzes and exams are EXACTLY like her notes. you even get bonus points for showing up
this lady is absolutely wack! avoid her class at all costs! HOWEVER, if you get stuck in her class know that she might know her stuff but has absolutely no clue whatsoever on HOW to teach the material. she has you do all problems the LONG way, no short cuts, just loves making life difficult.
I failed my 1st MAC 1105 and I took it the second time with her and got a B+. She's great. She gives true and false on her test and she goes over everything slowly. I really like her teaching.
Horrible. Drop this class before it's too late.
Easy class if you pay attention. Its an education class so its full of girls that don't shut up and thats why most people dont pass. The teachers nice and very patient. I recommend =)
SOB...this class is hard and the exams are totally something different from the things she tells you to study. not helpfull at all. sucks!!
terrible teacher. An hour and 15 minutes of torture. I attended every class, did the homework (attempted to) and even went to tutoring and still failed.
Her lectures are a little bit confusing sometimes but she is willing to help you a lot. Her quizzes are straight out of the book. Test are a little bit hard but if you go to class and do the homeworks you will pass the class.
good teacher overall. she teaches very well and is easy to understand. she has a slight accent but speaks english very well. If you miss class you might be alittle lost. tests are fairly easy if you study. I would recommend her.
She has an accent so it may be difficult to understand her at times. She doesn't check homework, the test i found somewhat difficult. A lot of people dropped this class after the second test. Wouldn't highly recomend her.
SHe needs to take an english class to get rid of her awful accent and she really doesn't know what shes teaching. Many times students had to correct her and one time she taught a whole chapter wrong and had to reteach it. This affected all of our grades b/c it left us all confused but she didnt care. I failed by 3 point and she wouldnt curve me!
Well, her accent isn't hard to understand, because she sounds hispanic. Her English is fine. It's the way the grades are that bothers me. There's only four grades in the entire semester, and they're on the four tests. There are no backup points for homework or quizzes, so you're more likely to fail. I'm really starting to hate this class!
Next semester will be the 3rd semester she teacher college algebra. I've heard of a ton of easier teachers than her. However, she does know her stuff. There are only three test and then the final. She does not grade homework, she does not give quizes like other teachers. It's hard to get an A and really easy to Fail. I wouldn't recommend her.
She is not clear with her lessons and she dont even care about u as a student. Half of the class dropped and she still dont see that as a problem.
do not take math with her!!
if you have half a brain and know algebra, take her class. she has true and false questions, the rest are short answer and 4-5 to show all the work. i got a B+ by not trying. she's very sweet and explains well. if you are hispanic, shes not hard to understand; her english is very good actually. take her if you're SMART!
Very difficuly but I think it's mostly because of the material. She knows math like no other human I've known. Grade is based on 3 exams and the final so doing homework and asking questions is vital to passing this class. After the second exam, half the class dropped so be careful. I wouldn't recommend taking her unless you're a god at math.
She appears to be sweet, but she seems to enjoy see others fail. More than half our class received F's. She's very smart, but she doesn't take the time to see us through it. Take precalculus, have a tutor or take this class after having background or you'll be piled up with math theorems to show your practice and understanding of them on the tests.
I'm the type of student that passed calculus (I & II) and physics easily. But discrete math is a different story: the most boring type of math, plus she makes it hard. I repeat: She will ask you the hardest questions possible. She "curves" based on the highest grade on each quiz/test, but there is always a smart one. I dropped to avoid failing
She spends 1 hour explaining something that has nothing to do with what you need to know and then tries to teach you a chapter in 15 minutes, Total mess, never prepared. Avoid her!
She definitely knows her stuff. Considering that the class has around a 70 percent failing rate, her infamous reputation is probably created by students who probably failed the class. Her accent is not too thick, if you are hispanic, definitely easy to understand. She gives extra credit if you attend every class before each test!
She is the sweetest looking lady. she explain very well and makes it so easy to understand. her test are somewhat hard but if you do the homework you will pass. give x-tra credit for going to class but she is super boring so have coffe before going to her class.
If you choose this professor you will fail due to her incomprehensible English. Weak at expressing math concepts/ideas and handwriting is difficult to read. Not very helpful and shows minimum concern for her struggling students. After the first 2 tests, over 80% of the class dropped, and I was one of them.
If i was you do not take this teacher, you have to teach most of the material to your slef, her test are tricky she always puts special cases that are not in the homework, when you go to her office she is not very helpfull, she asks for definition on exams, her classes are really boring, she will not answer all of the question asked about the HW. I
Do not take this class with this lady!!! not many choices to pass the class due to her extremely hard scoring..all test material and quizzes are not related to what is assaigned in the homework. IF YOU FAIL THE FIRST TEST!! YOU CAN'T GO FURTHER in the class... 80 % in the class already dropped. Plus you have to learn on your own. YOU WERE WARNED!
Don't expect to pass if you miss more than 3 classes. If you do the homework assignments and study hard you won't pass. Her tests are hard but is everything that she teaches. Take good notes! She explains well.
This professor makes discrete math living hell
Go to class, pay attention and take notes. Do all the homework before the tests to prepare and you will pass.
if u want to pass this class... look for another teacher. attendance is mandatory and she is a very nice lady but for some reason the class is hard and her tests are horrible. she puts fill in the blank on her tests and not one, like 50 percent. u might think that will b easier, but its difficulttt. the average for her test fell in the 30's range
Teacher is real nice, but work is real hard! DO your homework and take good notes. Calculator is very helpful,
Recommended. She provides a clear daily schedule and sticks to it. She teaches quite well. That being said, discrete math is not the most intuitive topic. It requires a lot out of non-math students, so it takes some work. You will not get an A unless you invest time and effort. Much better than Gorman, which I dropped after only three classes.
AVOID THIS TEACHER!!!!!!! TEST ARE SUPPER HARD. she doesnt return the test to study for the final. Her test have true and false questions. She doesnt give partial credit. If you ask her a question she basically ends up talking to herself and not answering your question.
Her class is a TRICK u may know the material, but she tricks it out... as funny as that may sound... good luck!
She is a really sweet person & she is available to help you if you need it. The class had a 75% fail rate but if you do the homework which she doesnt check you will do well on the tests. Curves every test except final & no quizzes or extra assignments (: I would recommend her.
Her class is really boring, but she is actually a very nice person. The stuff are hard if you dont study enough. I have math major, so I never did any homework and end up with a solid "A". But 30 out of 50 students dropped her class, and only 10 of the remain are passing.
I took DM twice with Mrs. Shershin and did well the 2nd time. It is hard because there is a lot of NEW material and a quiz every Tuesday. The prof. is not horrible, but she certainly is NOT as helpful as she can be either. You need to study everything she covers to ensure you do well in quizes/tests because you never know what she'll ask.
Okay, atleast half of these ratings are right. Her teaching wasnt the greatest. Her final was HORRIBLE. I barely got threw it. She's helpful and tries to help yuu get it but she didnt seem to know how to explain it right. If you are totally lost in PreCal and Trig dont take her, but if yuu somewhat know the material, go ahead.
Wow horrible teacher. So anal about details. Quizzes are ok but tests are ten times as hard. This subject could be hard but she makes it super hard. Stay away . go to BBC and take this class instsead
Not a very good teacher. She gave 6 quizzes, 3-4 of which required you to memorize proofs. So when I studied for the exam, I focused on those proofs. Then she only included 1. That's ridiculous. She also rambles and mumbles during her lecture. Overall she was kind of nice but this is a really hard class and she gives no margin for error.
WOW she is the worst teacher for deicrete...dont do it!!!! i repeat dont do it
NOT AS BAS AS PEOPLE SAY SHE IS.she is nice and willing to help. As for tests i got an A on the first one and i suck at math (I barley passed college algebra)Im gonna take my second exam soon and I hope to do well. just study really hard and you should be fine (although this being a math class, you should always be doing this)
She's a nice lady but she makes Calculus ten times harder than it really is... If you're not a blessed math genius don't take her take prof. Nadel his tests are sane gives good review and he's organized.
Idk why ppl find her so difficult. Just attend class, do all the HW (which isnt mandatory, seeing as how she doesnt collect it)and study. Yes her exams are pretty tough but theyre managable. She doesnt allow calculator use. And attendance is mandatory but she give you an extra 5 points on the exam for attending class. And she knows what shes doing.
Discrete math is a tough subject to understand and she doesn't make it any easier. Make sure to read the textbook as quiz questions don't necessarily come from her lectures! She's not easy, but you'll definitely understand the subject after passing her class. Also, I recommend a shot of espresso per hour of class to counter her monotonous voice.
She was so easy, she made calculus seem like a coloring class! She is very clear and if you do and understand the homework problems you will pass the exams. Calculus is a hard subject in general but she is a good teacher by far. Nice, organized and always smiling.
Makes Calculus as difficult as possible. Its difficult to understand her teaching and she tends to lose her students, ramble on and frequently gets lost herself. Her spanish accent is heavy.Shes a very nice lady. I did well in AP Calc in HS but almost failed her class. she's obsessed with proving various aspects of Calc. Good luck.
I took both Calculus I and Discrete Mathematics with her. If you took calc in high school, her Calculus I class should be an easy A. I never did the homework! Just go to class everyday, and pay attention! Discrete Math was hard, but I don't blame her though. It's a tough class to teach. I got an A- because I did every problem she assigned for HW.
Only two profs. to choose from at FIU. Shershin was painfully hard but POSSIBLE. 8 Quizzes, drops 2, Midterm and Final are difficult! Not mandatory, BUT GO TO CLASS. Her lectures are unclear but will go over topics that will be present on exams. FORCE YOURSELF TO READ EVERY SINGLE PAGE ASSIGNED IN THE BOOK. The material more tedious than difficult.
Exams are hard and she curves heavily but doesn't always help you because she doesn't like to give partial credit for the first half of her exams so the curve just balances out everything instead of helping you. Will try to help you but doesn't give back exams to keep and tends to skip some steps so make sure you KNOW material from calc 1 very well
She is quite possibly the best math teacher I've ever had. Extra credit on tests for attendance, only two tests and a final, optional homework to help. She caters to your understanding. Try the homework, ask about what you don't understand, & she cares. You'll pass.
Took her for trig and ended up teaching myself reading the book. Horrible class, does not help you much. Only 3 tests and a final. No way to see progress. I do not recommend.
This course killed my interest in wanting to continue learning math. She makes me hate it. Her knowledge of the subject is fine, but she doesn't know how to teach. She just throws random notes up on the board and expects us to know it automatically. Her quizzes and tests are near impossible because she never goes over anything on them in detail.
She is a nice person but she does not know how to teach, she lacks the ability to express her ideas. Quizzes and exams are super hard and very different from what she teaches in class. 10 quizzes droops 2, 4 exams around 25 questions.
Granted, Math is a dull subject. The only reason why I got a B+ in the class was because I had already taken AP calc in High School, so it was still fresh in my mind. She could use a little tune-up to stir some interest in learning this subject.
Agh, what to say? Well first of all, she's not that bad.... tests are relatively do-able you just have to study and she does say what's going to be on the test, 3 tests, 14 hws and quizzes (hw and quizzes online) and one final. She drops the lowest quiz and hw grade at the end. Attend every class prior to test and you get 3 points. Some hws r long
Professor Shershin is HORRIBLE at teaching. She's not clear at all. Starts with one problem and moves on to another without finishing the previous one. Failed my first quiz, and even tutoring couldn't help pass. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Does not make the subject palatable. She expects her students to "discover" calculus themselves. Leads the class using proofs. Tests mostly on previous knowledge of trig/algebra and expects students to have a solid background in calculus before entering. Pins blame on student's algebra skills on why they can't understand her. Steer elsewhere.
Hard Class. Unclear and hard to understand. Quizzes and tests are literally minutes so you have to be VERY VERY QUICK if you want to finish them. You've been warned! She tells you what will be on the test. You need to read the book on its entirety because her lecture is confusing. Do all the homework.
She is a HORRIBLE.She does say what is going tobeon the quiz but it is not what she teaches in class. On the board she puts 2X2 onthe quiz its 2342342.2342Xsqrt2345.3she hates partial creditHer accent is notbad what kills me is that I have to concentrate just to listen to herShe looses herself while doing the examples on the board. rude to students
She will expect you to be a mathematician before entering class. Her passing rate isn't that high. When you ask her to explain a question, don't expect to understand the answer. Not even people who have taken AP Calc. have understood her class.
She is not a horrible teacher but you really have to pay attention and study for of her quizzes and exams. She tries to give extra credit for attendance which is helpful but her tests are extremely hard. DO NOT EXOECT TO GET AN A UNLESS YOU ARE A MATH GENIUS.
She knows a lot, but most of the times she does not know how to teach it.
Her class is difficult, but manageable. I got an A because I worked hard. Do not slack in this class. Study from the book, and attend class only to get the extra credit she gives for the test. I used chegg to check my hw answers, and only wrote down notes when she went over examples. It does get easier towards the end, if that is any consolation.
First off...this is math, so it's going to be challenging. She gives 5 pts extra credit on each of her exams if you attended all of her lectures. She's a sweet lady, and her accent isn't too bad. She tries to explain how to do the problems but sometimes gets caught up for a minute before remembering how to finish. Best math prof Ive had though.
I don't understand why everyone finds discrete math so difficult. I got A's on all of my quizzes and 100% on the midterm. You just need to apply yourself and you'll be fine. Attending class is curcial becasuse she gives extra credit towards the exmas and hints of what to expect. Attend class, do the HW, study your notes, & memorize proofs.
Dr. Shershin was a good professor unlike what most people say she goes over what will be in the exam and does many examples in class. She is however very boring, and can cause you to lose focus and even though attendance isn't mandatory she gives bonus points. Her homework is harder than her tests and ya no calculators.
Knowledgeable but does not know how to teach. Exams are not hard except for the final which was just set up for failure. She gives reviews for regular exams and tells us what specific q's are going to be on it. The final exam review had NOTHING to do with the final exam. Expects you to be a mathematician. Will not take her again.
Professor Shershin is a very difficult professor. During lectures, Shershin is not concise in her teaching. She rambles and that does not show professionalism. Her homework requires calculators but everything else does not need calculators?!? She's confusing and does not express remorse for failing students. You should avoid.
Shershin surpassed my expectations she was such a great professor. Definitely take her class if you need a professor that will go over material multiple times if the students are struggling with it. Attendance is not mandatory but she gives extra points to your exams for having perfect attendance, so go to class!
Gives so much extra credit and curves. I don't know how people can fail her class. Do homework as practice but focus on her notes, her Quizzes and Exams are similar to hw and notes. Beware of the Final, people here are right when they say its set for failure! Study the end chapters, Limits, and graphing those appear on the final. Goodluck
Talks very low. Sometimes rambles. Not very clear. this class was harder than calculus but it was easy to cheat in if you sat in the back.
She is an excellent teacher! I loved her lectures! Explains everything clearly and in full. If you don't understand something along the lecture, just ask, she will go over it an make sure you got it. Tests are easy, since she tells what kind of questions exactly to expect on them. Attend lectures, do homework, ask and you'll pass it easy with an A
She is a good math teacher, but she needs to work on explaining and teaching it to others. I did all of the homework and also added the even numbers to get extra practice. Her tests are tough, def. practice, practice, practice. I found another teacher on YouTube and learned more from him than from her.
This teacher is okay, but I felt she only taught to the 5 kids who understood and left the other 30 in the dust. If you don't have any experience with Calc and did well on the ALECS like me, I suggest taking pre-Calc or using another professor. She started on day 1 with things I was never taught, and I was unable to ever catch up. Don't recommend.
I personally did not like her teaching style. Whenever I would ask a question on how she did a problem, she would just do the problem again. So I was still in the same predicament because she didn't explain it thoroughly. If you've never taken precal/trig before don't take her. She expects you to have a general understanding. I dropped her class.
She doesn't give reviews for exams.. she tells you to do problems from the book. Doesn't give extra credit at all. Only 3 points on exams for perfect attendance. Exams are weird. Some questions are worth 3 points, others are 12 points, it all ranges in points. So if you get the 12 point question one wrong, there goes your A. Poor teacher.
Shershin is a nice lady but she is monotone! She's willing to help outside of the class but test are tough are graded in a strange manner. I passed the class but I wouldn't take her again
Probably one of the worst math professors at FIU. Best 5 out of 6 quizzes (50%), Midterm and Final (50%). Only 3 points for perfect attendance if you seat in your "assigned seat". HA HA HA. Waste of time to attend her class. You will get more out of reading the book and doing HW exercises.
Horrible teacher. I wouldn't recommend taking the class unless you like to fail. She only does test but they are hard and graded weird. Her "extra credit" is pathetic. Do not take her you will regret it.
If you don't study or if you're not good with algebra, I'm not quite sure how you would pass calculus or upper division math course. You need to practice from the homework, her test questions are literally taken from the book. The reason many people give her bad ratings is because: they have bad algebra and didn't study. She curves and gives E.C.
She's clear and good at explaining. 3 points added to each test if you go to every class, 5 tests including the final and each is 25% of your total grade. However, that' is it for possible points: there are no homework points or curves. It will be difficult to get an A with her. If you can not do 100+ problems/ week for HW, don't take her.
If you struggle with math, I suggest you don't take her. Even if you do dedicate yourself like I did and do every single practice problem and attend all her classes and office hours, you may still get Cs on the exams due to her getting questions absent in lectures and homework assignments. I did not like her. No HW points or curves.
Professor Shershin is extremely knowledgeable about Calculus. She is also always willing to help if you ask. Furthermore, Her lectures are great and well prepared. You just have to do your part and work hard. Most people struggle because they lack a good foundation in math. So go back to the basics if need be! She also helps with curves and extras!
If you have a good foundation in Math, I would recommend her. She explains everything in detail and will explain it again if you don't get it the first time. The only grades you get are from 5 exams, so you have to really work for the A.
She does not respond to any emails, there are no extensions/makeup for homework or tests, no exceptions, the tests are ridiculously hard due to her including many questions that do not come from lectures OR homework. If you need to take MAC1147 take it with Prof. Balius.
Your grade is exams (75%) and quizzes (25%). A lot of homework which isnt mandatory but its the only way youll do well on her exams. If its your first time taking calculus, you might wanna go in another direction. Shershin is a sweet old lady, her lectures lack organization. If you take her, youtube: proffesor leonard calculus. Youll pass.
Smartest professor I have ever had. Before I took this class I did not know calculators could walk or talk but Texas Instruments Carmen Shershin 3000 has taught me otherwise. As long as you are able to do the hw questions she assigns for practice you will get an A. Hope she teaches and spreads her knowledge for many more years!
Lectures are interactive and helpful. Tests based on hw and in class examples. Curves test and gives extra credit for attendance.
3 tests, 3 quizzes, final exam. Teaches everything you need to know in lectures, works out some problems on the board, and gives out the objectives necessary for the tests. Speaks very softly, so sit near the front. Optional attendance but you do get extra points on all your exams for attending. Pay attention and you'll be set.
Took her in Fall'16 and it was a very plain sailing class. As long as you do your HWs and study, you're good to go !
Not the best professor but if you know what you're doing and are prepared to put in some work you'll be fine. Definitely sit up close, she speaks super low. She uses everything out of the textbook so it's helpful if you have it, just etext is fine. Don't expect her to help out of class.
Material of class is not even hard. You will learn very little from her. You gotta teach everything yourself pretty much. Really hard to understand her when shes trying to teach. She's really bad with technology, and the use of technology is major by the department of math
She's a nice person and wants her students to get good grades, but she doesn't teach. I was lucky enough to know all the content back from high school, but some weren't. She once put a problem in the board that most of the class has never seen before and not do anything unless someone stands up to solve it. Doesn't know how to teach. Curves exams.
