Get good at listening because you will do a lot of that. Not room for open discussion, so it's pretty much a solid lecture.

If you wanna know all about Fiji, take this class. She rambles on and on about Fiji and other things not relating to education...boring as anything. She repeats herself a lot and the book and lectures hardly ever correlate.
She is the most boring lady ever...she repeats everything 5 times but the tests are easy
If you like to be confused and have no idea where you are going, this class is perfect. One day I kept a tab of how many times she said um in a half hour, I got up to 83 and quit.
Avoid this class...the teacher and lectures are completely unorganized. Everything she says is completely random and trivial. Ask me anything about the south pacific...I assure you, I don't know it.
She doesn't follow the syllabus and is very unclear.
This is an intro course, so don't expect to be overwhelmed with difficult information...or highly motivated classmates. Dr. White is very friendly and willing to go out of her way to work with you so long as you show her respect.
Carmen is so nice and willing to help with any questions. I missed a test with no phone call no excuse or anything and she let me take it when I came back in to talk to her about it. Very easy going lady.
The final was kind of hard in this class, but the other exams were very easy. Let me make up a test once for full credit. Very friendly and patient, and held her temper nicely with someone in the class who was being a real jerk.

She is very clear in presenting the information. She is very understanding and nice to talk to. She will answer all your questions. Very interesting to listen to. This class has opened my mind to other things in the world.

Easy A, especially if you use the study guides. Boring lectures, kind of haphazard. Does not stick to syllabus, so don't expect to know when a quiz or test will be ahead of time.
Class can be intresting sometimes, mainly just the movies though. If you want to do good on the exams just go over the study guide. Class is mainly pretty easy, not to much work involved.

ANT 200 is pretty easy, yet it is boring. ANT 324 is just plan boring. I don't think she is a horrible person. She seems reasonable so far, but she can be very redundant, which can be somewhat boring

You shouldn't have a problem with this class. She is hard to understand if you sit in the back b/c of her soft voice, yes she repeats a lot, but her quizes are take home and her first exam was incredibly easy and no papers. Review sheets given for exams
She belongs on the National Geographic channel, commenting on tribes of whatever, but she should not be teaching. Overly organized yet horribly disorganized, repeats the same things every day, ends class whenever students pack up and go. Tedious.
Awesome teacher! Her lectures can get repetative, but she's big on videos and take home quizes! Really knows cultures especially tahiti or where ever she went!? Very nice! Loved her class, easy A!

Carmen is very boring. The class is pretty easy, all of the quizzed are take-home. Attendance counts though so you have to attend the snooze-fest everytime the class meets.
Such an easy professor and is so willingly to help her students. Classes can get boring but the take home quizzes are a big help. Her tests aren't that bad and there are a lot of videos.
Quiet and dull (takes forever to convey simple ideas)...but very nice, smart lady...easy take-home quizzes and out-of-the-book tests, excellent in-class videos

Fascinating Class. Very smart, knows a lot about the topic from living in Fiji for three years. No cumulative final, 3 test all open notes. Her only problem is that she is always behind and having to rewrite the sylabus. Two short books are strictly supplementary. All info presented in class.
I agree with some of the comments, but everything she tells you is emphasized on the exams. And all the quizzes are easy. She is very interesting and even though she is repetitive and sometimes boring, you take a lot of information with you in realistic life.
i didnt find this class very interesting. i retook it at northwestern and the first day we were told stories about south american native tribes and got to talk to people from vietnam and see what their culture is like. carmen never did anything like that. if you dont mind lectures and jsut being told things then thats what youll get.
First ANT class I have taken, and i found it very interesting. we watch movies a lot..take home quizes, and attendence counts. Essay questions on tests, but you get to pick 1 out of like 5. Nice lady.
Very eager to help and extremely nice! She repeats a lot of things during class, which can get frustrating, but everything she presents in class will appear on the test. Books are optional, yet helped out during the tests. Exams are open book, open notes.
Go to class. Don't smoke crack. Aced.
This teacher sucks - Can anyone say BORING!!?? Good luck trying to stay awake in this class - all she does is talk in a very quiet, monotone voice.
She's a nice lady. i may not always pay attention but it's an early class. she loves what she teaches and she does very well at presenting the materials. she does tend to forget things though and then she has to clarify everything
Very nice lady. She put on the board the important material and it was on the tests. Take home quizzes were fairly easy and I learned a lot just from those. The study guides are very well written and thorough.
Fiji...Fiji this...Fiji that...Fiji, Fiji, Fiji. She is so monotone and OBSESSED with Fiji. Nice teacher. Very unclear, doesn't use powerpoint, or overhead, and write on the board. NO VISUALS. Must listen to every boring thing she says.
This woman is boring as all hell. She writes down a definition, talks about Fiji for 12 hours, and then right before the class ends she attempts to make a quick point while everyone is packing up their stuff. If you have a hard time staying awake as it is, I would not recommend taking this course.
This teacher was hard to listen to.. I have never met anyone who could say one thing in 500 different ways! It's easy but really hard to sit through.

Professor White is not particularly interesting, though she is a really nice person. Her tests are a bit wordy, but the quizzes are VERY easy. She gives you 3 weeks to do them, with a 3 hour timer and each question is straight forward and in order of the info in the book.
She is VERY boring and rambles on and on about things you had to read in the book. I think she also has some form of OCD because she taps on the chalk board 3 times with her chalk and pushes her sleeves up and down the entire class. If you can stand a very boring but easy teacher she is the one to take. She is also very nice and helpful.
Class is boring and she talk about fiji often. Is very nice. Quizzes are online and easy with plenty of time to complete. Does take attendence. Tests are multiple choice and essay. Many choices for the topic of the essay just go in detail. Overall easy class.

The class isn't so bad really. It's easy. As long as you do what is expected of you. do the online quizes that you get two chances to take and you don't even have to read, just skim and find the answers. study for the exams..not even like hardcore. take notes in class. you'll do fine.
While she is an incredibly nice lady, she's a very dull professor. She absolutely knows what she's talking about, but doesn't seem to know how to present it in an interesting way. Tests/quizzes pretty easy. Very quiet when she talks & never stops when other people are talking, which drove me nuts. Potentially interesting, but take at your own risk.
I sit in the back of her class drooling and doodling, and i have a 95% going into the first exam. i wouldn't show up if attendence wasn't mandatory. i'm sure she's a nice lady, but she needs to learn how to teach. she knows what she's talking about, she just can't make it interersting.
I was really excited to take this class, but now I can barely stay awake. She is very smart, but she reviews the same idea over and over and the course really has nothing to do with education and culture like its supposed to. We spent 2 weeks on formal education, and although I realize most edu happens in the home, that's just ridiculous.

A good teacher, she really knows what she's talking about. No, she doesn't talk about Fiji all time. Definitely need to go the class to get a good grade, tests are online and there is a big project.
Attendance is mandatory. Lectures are boring, but I just did other homework during class. Quizzes are online and super easy. You'll need the book for them. Tests are a little harder, you may need to study a bit. Multiple choice and do one essay from many options. Easy class. Recommend for UP.
This is a horrible class. She mumbles and writes with nearly-dead markers and her notes slant downward on the board and are hard to read. She didn't go one class period without talking about her life in Fiji all semester. If you don't mind your time being wasted, go ahead and take her.

Carmen White has quite an extensive memory of anthropology and the culture of Fiji. However, this class is so incredibly boring. I played my iPod and went on Facebook for most of the class. Be sure to bring your computer to 'take notes'.
I read the awful reviews of this professor and figured she couldn't be THAT bad, so I took the class. AWFUL MISTAKE. She is the most boring professor on earth. The material is actually interesting, but you'll learn far more from the book. She treats the class like middle schoolers and rambles, talking about 1 example for a half hour.
One of my favorite profs. I have taken all 3 of her classes and enjoyed all of them. At times she is a bit boring but she is always helpful if you have a question or concern, and she has even helped me with classwork from other classes!
Worst professor I have ever had. I dont undertand how people like her. She doesnt get involved with the class at all. Seems like she just wings every lecture. Says that the tests are only on what we cover in class but most of the material is never covered. Doesnt follow the sullabus what so ever. Worst mistake of my college career: taking her class
This professor was a very nice one and very helpful, but the class itself was quite boring. She does rant about the same topic for half the class, and I often found myself sitting in class daydreaming. Strong use of books, which I suggest reading closely in order to get a good grade. Be prepared for a long talk about Fiji the whole semester...
Very nice but super boring. Fun classes were rare. No interaction with the class. I do all I can not to fall asleep everyday. We may talk about one or two things for the entirety of the class and occasionally watch outdated movies. She talks too quiet, mumbles a ton, and way to fast to even grasp what she is saying. Pretty easy but not worth it.
I offer my respect for that fact that she loves the field she teaches. That's fantastic. I also understand that Anthropology isn't a ton of fun to learn, but she just lectures and lectures. No class discussion, no cooperative assignments. Lectures, Reading, Tests, and Homework. That's it.
Save yourself the time and money and do not take this class. It will be the worst mistake of your life. She is an AWFUL professor. Not only does she ramble about nothing but she mumbles. You will literally go insane in this class. Good luck to whoever takes it.
This is by far the worst college course that I have ever taken. The professor is incredibly boring, mumbles, and over-explains simple concepts. She talks about Fiji too much. There was absolutely no class interaction, and it was difficult to stay awake. Her writing is terrible. Even when I studied and felt confident in exams, my grades were low.
When I read all the reviews about how boring this class was, I thought I could handle it. No, it is absolutely awful. She mumbles, you don't talk or interact with anyone, she goes on and on about mostly nothing, and have I mentioned that she mumbles. She is a smart woman and knows her stuff, but it isn't worth it. Very, very boring. The most boring class I've ever taken, like worse than Astronomy. She takes attendance everyday, so you can't even skip even though it's boring. There are online quizzes that are really easy. There are a few assignments, but no papers. She gives you a really detailed study guide, and if you read it you will do okay-like get a B.

If you do not need this class for your major DO NOT TAKE IT. She really is an awful professor. She is extremely rude. Always mumbles and gives horrible notes. Online quizzes are easy but exams are hard. If you skip class your grade will go down. The whole semester I absolutely dreaded this class.
Prof. White has long lectures but all of the tests (4) were directly from the lectures. If you memorize the reviews she hands out, you will get an A. She is interesting, but her style of speaking and lecturing makes it easy to zone out. Easy A with some effort! Go to class to get point for watching movies!
This professor is a nice lady but didn't speak clearly and her notes slanted down the board. Every sentience she says, she restates in different words which makes it hard to take notes. I didn't learn much.

I found myself dreading this class everyday. Her lectures are endless with many tangents and information that is irrelevant. She writes notes on the board that are very disorganized and difficult to copy down in a clear outline. Her voice is very monotone and tends to mumble. I dread having to attend this class. Its easy, since the study guides are essays that you study, but the lectures are really long and don't make sense or have any sort of flow. I took this as UI requirement, I wish I would have chose a different class. I haven't learned one thing in this class. Waste of time and money, but easy GPA booster.

All exams are online and you have multiple attempts, so you can get an A without even looking at the book. This was still the most painful class in my entire life. Avoid her at all costs.
Honestly, the lectures in this class sucked. The videos were always interesting and allowed for easy points. The exam reviews are AMAZING!!! I always took notes during lectures (partially to help me stay awake), but the exam reviews really helped me study. Although she is hard to understand with her stutter, somehow information gets absorbed well.

Dr. White is an excellent professor, and knows the subject well. She is very educated, yet doesn't belittle her students. She and I would have conversations after many classes about anthropology, and life in general. Not many profs at Central have done that. I learned a lot from her, and will take again!

There was a lot of having to teach myself because she was AWFUL! She just stands there and blabs on for an hour and 15 minutes straight. There are absolutely no powerpoints or handouts. DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH HER. I learned absolutely nothing about cultural anthropology.

Not going to lie, boring class, watched a movie all last period.
She is very soft spoken and hard to hear at times, no matter how close you sit. She spends most of the class at the computer with no powerpoints or any other media just talking. Test aren't hard if you go to class, and overall pretty easy class. Be prepared to watch a lot of movies and online quizzes.

Professor White is really knowledgeable on what she is teaching, however she can get a little lost on tangents. I had to take this class for my degree as they did not offer the Soc course needed.... idk if its just Carmen white or the material but she makes it all the more unbearable!!! The longest hour and a half of my life! She just rambles and whispers, and stumbles over her words the entire time. Its pitiful and I have never given a prof a bad rating!

Believe me when I say, this was the most boring class Ive ever been apart of in my life. Her voice is extremely monotone and with put you to sleep quicker than ASMR. I have taken multiple writing intensive courses with no problem in grammar but she found 80+ errors in an essay. She actually wanted me to use lowkey in my paper. Unbelievable.

I really liked Mrs. White- I can really tell that she cares about what she's teaching. :) She's always telling us stories about her research from Fiji and showing us interesting documentaries and I feel like I learn something new every time I go to her class. Plus every time I talk to her she's so nice.
Well, Carmen was interesting to listen to for the first few classes. She got to be super monotone and difficult to understand. She uses a lot of ums and uhs and talks very quietly. Her class was easy to grasp from the materials she provided, but her lectures were not worth it to attend. However, it was mandatory to attend with a grade penalty.
Not a bad class overall, but I found it extremely slow and even boring during some lectures. She is also hard to follow at some points and the you are graded on few things.
Her lectures are incredibly dry and boring. Especially because she made her class completely online because of COVID. Still, definitely the most boring professor I've had at CMU.
Dr. White is really kind but her lectures are extremely slow, dry, and boring. Very monotonous. The class has just really dragged on all semester. I took the WI but most of the homework was just quizzes still. One big paper worth a large chunk of the grade. I wouldn't take it again, but it wasn't hard. Just boring.

Exams and quizzes were multiple choice, long timers, and two attempts. Given all semester to write the final paper. So forgiving and accommodating.
It was easy to do good in this class. Hybrid class was all online synchronous. Lectures were repetitive but she posts her slides which is helpful. There are video quizzes and new reports throughout the semester which were easy. The exams are long, but have two attempts and long timers. She was super kind and caring, but the class was boring.

The lectures are a bit dull, but engaging with the material, using resources like unstuck study for study prep, and attending class makes this a solid course overall. Grading is fair, if a bit strict.
The class was overall easy with few assignments that was a manageable work load. However, it took multiple weeks to get grades back and when they were given back they were graded harshly with no feedback as to what was wrong with the writings. The description for the assignment was already vague and no feedback didn't help with raising my grade.
