Fun class, he keeps you entertained
best class i have taken, hot and sexy in a different way
This guy is good. Interesting lectures and will get you thinking. Tests were surprisingly hard so study up! Reading material for the course was VERY good. Take him if you can.
he's awesome
he tends to stray way off topic. his lectures are hard to follow. it ended up being class debate about irrelevant topics. tests are hard, with many true false. he's very intelligent, but not good lecturer.
Great teacher but test material is hard and not relevant to what you study.
I absolutely LOVED this class. If you are in to questioning religion, this is the class for you...the tests are a little difficult, and he DOES stray in lecture, but it is all relevant and interesting. One of my fave classes here.
At first didn't enjoy the class, but in time came to enjoy the class and the lectures (and thier tangents). Yes, his tests were a bit difficult, but I found that they weren't unbearable at all. If you remotely knew the material you could do well.
Rambled on and on about nothing, but yet he tested you on specifics. If you have a hard time with true and false tests you will do bad in this class.
This guy knows his stuff. Picks up his lectures where he left off without using notes. Always cool, calm & collected.
Fills the lecture period without notes and never an "uh."
Anastasio is one of the best professors this university has and the reason i went into studying religion. his lectures are brillant, he can argue anything you through at him from whatever view you are studying. his test are not as hard as some say.
Outstanding Lecturer, LOVED the class, but the tests were a little weird... Like a T or F ? with the "row row row your boat..." nursery rhyme. Very hard to get an A with crazy stuff like that.
He knows his stuff, but his test are really hard. He doesn't test on what his lectures cover.
My favorite teacher and favorite class so far at WSU. He really knows what he is talking about, is interesting, and doesn't BS. Great teacher, wish he taught more classes.
i love his yoga class. he is so laid back and really knows what he is talking about. i love the yoga postures he teaches. that man is really flexible!!!!
absolutely loved him! had him for cst and tai chi. cst was difficult; tai chi was a cinch! he's one of the most interesting people i have ever known and i would recommend him to anyone , unless they're looking for an easy A.
This Prof. is awesome! If you are willing to learn about other worldviews and keep an open mind you can learn a great deal. He's really cool because he gives you valuable tools you can use in life as well as information-and you can seperate the two!
Not very patient. If you don't understand a technique, he basically just stands there and stares at you and makes you feel like a complete idiot.
I loved this Yoga class! He definitley knows his stuff and I plan to take again!! He focuses on meditation end posures equally which gives the class a great balance other instructors ignore.
Yes he's a sexy beast but the first 2 weeks of class I kept thinking I was in the WRONG class because all he talked about was how much the US sucked in terms of their world view.Lectures were interesting but too much negativity and not much comparing.
He is brilliant and I could listen to him talk for hours. THere's a joke about his grading, tho. lol. Word is he collects the papers, gives everyone a "B" and hands them back. Ask around. He's awesome, tho.
he is full of****.i think he makes stuff up off the top of his head.Ive taken 3 dif selfdefense course and they all taught that it is selfesteem as well as physical techniques,he only teaches techniques, most of which dont work.i was disapointed w/ course
Awesome Prof!! Very clear and willing to explain beyond lecture. His class is challening and you have to keep an open mind without letting it affect you, unless of course it makes more sense that what you've been taught and you decide to change a view or two. Tests are hard so study alot.Worth it.
Very funny class, lectures were interesting and easy to understand. Tests and paper a breeze. Take this class if you are interested in non western culture. If your a die hard America consumer producer, get ready to be bashed, but I liked that about him.
He is an awsome person and teacher. He really explained how to do the certain moves and showed the transition between them. He was very clear in his explanations. I really like him. He was funny too.
I hated him, he spent half the class talking about his hatred of the military and America. His tests were worded badly and confussing.
One of the best Professors I have ever had!!! His lectures are non demanding as far as note taking goes because he makes it fun and you can remember the material easily.
One of the best teachers I ever had! He really breaks down how to do each and every technique. He also is really funny.
I first thought that Carmine was a total jerk, but he turned out to be a nice guy after all. Come to class every time and you'll be fine!
Thought he was "higher" than everyone. Tests were worded horribly.
One of the easiest classes ever...nonwestern religion was great.
Good teacher very interresting as long as you go to class
Very, very hard. Expect to do poorly on the first exam. Since there is only one more, you'll have to work your ass off for it.
while the class was interesting, TEST WERE IMPOSSIBLE DUE TO WORDING!! Also was 1.75 mins late for a 2.00 hour class on exam day and with 10 mins left he made everyone take the final. Just dont waste your time and skip it
The tests are impossible to study for because very few questions actually come from the notes and the main points covered in lecture. Sure class time is easy but when it comes down to what comprises your grade it's a whole 'nother ball game. Also, the book to read for the WI paper was probably intended for psychology majors and jibberish to the com
The class was very hard when it came to tests, but still one of my most interesting classes. He takes a different approach to teaching, and I liked that. Sure his tests are hard, but not impossible (build your vocabulary!) All I have to say is if you are closed minded and don't want to study, DON'T take the class.
Could have been better
Amazing, knowledgable, and very intelligent. Teaches from the perspective of worldviews. Misunderstood by some, he's actually amazingly patient and tolerant. If you ask questions, you'll be fine. Highly recommended.
Out of all of the classes I've taken at WSU, this is the one I have enjoyed the most. There's a lot to learn from this class. Anastasio is a great professor- Not a bad looking guy either.
Anastasio's a good professor - he's got the comments to prove it. He's passionate about what he teaches, which adds to the classes. If you don't have any actual interest in the subject matter (ie different cultures & their world & spiritual views
very calm and a natural killer...i thought i was going to hate him but he is very interesting and bright.....better miss one or less though
Wow this man has changed my life. Every lecture and class I had of his was the type that made me a better person, Thank you Carmine
Very hard! Caustically cynical and apprently hateful of Christians! Made us wait over an hour to get our final exam because he hadn't planned ahead for a substitute due to a schedule conflict.
Was hoping for an unbiased comparisons of non-western religions but instead heard lectures on the "wrongness" of western religions, namely Christianity.
The information presented was very thought provoking. It made me question myself and my beliefs more strickly. I discovered what I wanted and where I wanted to go in certain aspects of my life. Thanks, Anastasio, you were a great prof.
Anastasio is an extremely good teacher, but unfortunately he interjects his own opinions too much. I took his class hope to become more educated about world religions; instead, it turned out I took a class where all he did was bash Jesus and Western culture. I think his teaching methods are very unprofessional. He's smart, but very narrow minded.
He was a wonderful prof. He presents the entire picture and did so in a respectful intellectual manner. Those who feel he bashes christianity are simply unsecure in their faith or fanatics who cant refuse to see the big picture
Agree with last post, you must understand that he is teaching from point of view of the different world views. Don't take this class if you cant tolerate other opinions (notice I didnt say accept). Good, thought provoking class for those who like to know more than what they have been spoonfed.
The only big problem I had is he made money of the students by charging each twenty five dollars for him to show us different techniques. If it would've been 10 that would've been fine, but not 25. He made this thing seem like it was going to be a real professional seminar, but not even close.
Anyone who thinks he is bashing western relgions needs to think again. He is only presenting non-western religions from the position of a western worldview. He's a brilliant man, if you are open-minded and enjoy learning and seeing things from a point of view across the world definitely take this class! It was a great experience.
Great teacher. Extremely intellegent and such a fun class! Gave me new perspectives on life and the world! By far my most favorite class
He seems at first very admirable, someone who knows his field and is basically a good person. In reality, he is a fraud in many respects, who leaves the care of his Karate Dojo to incapable hands and skims profits from students in the name of the "Karate Club." As noted, he has a decidedly unprofessional "interest" in his female students. Avoid!
this class is a joke. i went to one class and thought it was so stupid. the demonstrations he does on girls is absolutely rediculous. he's such a ****. absolutely discusting.
Comes across as thinking like he's hard. He def. has favorite (female) students. This class is not easy. He charges $25 for a workshop to fulfill the W.I. requirement, which is RIDICULOUS. The class was interesting sometimes, but there was not enough discussion. He basically shoots down ideas and makes you feel stupid.
This man has taught me so many things I can't put it into one paragraph. Like the eternal Tao, if I could explain it, it wouldn't mean as much. I will take things he has taught me with me for the rest of my life. He has treated me with nothing but respect and decency. He's a unique and special person.
What an amazing professor! I really enjoyed this class, professor Anastasio's lectures are very thought provoking. His lectures are all from memory which I think is very commendable. Tests are a little tricky, but as long as you go to class and take notes on his lecture you’ll do just fine. The $25 workshop is optional! You can do a paper instead!
I was tremendously interested in the class, but he ruined it. He's full of himself and makes up statistics out of thin air.
You either love him or hate him, as stated previously. He is really a great professor. He makes you think. He is blunt, which is what people really don't like (honestly, we all need someone like that sometimes). Really good for a gen ed. For an 8:30 AM class, he definitely keeps it interesting.
I am a senior and I had a 4.0 before I took this class. I never thought I would get a B in a 200 level CST class. I went to every class. His lectures are very interesting, but I agree with previous statements that he relies on suspect stats to give his lectures meaning. Test questions were strange at best. I'm still bitter about my 1st B!
Anastasio is one of the best teachers I have ever experienced. About his blunt approach to dialog: It is a small price to pay for the knowledge he brings to the podium. As for those who whine about the God question, I noticed students being close-minded. When learning Eastern phil. it is your job to learn the subject w/o inserting personal beliefs.
Definitely makes you think. There are many classes where you think...what the *bleep*? Definitely keep up with readings, and participate so you really understand. Tests are 3 essay tests. No attendance requirement. Somewhat hard grader. Can be humorous, or just downright frustrating when you try to argue your beliefs. Overall good class.
The teacher was very knowledgeable , and really cared about the subject he was teaching. The only problem was so many of his students weren't willing to open their minds to other possibilities which really made it hard when they just wanted to argue the same points! He told us what the questions were before the test. If you do bad it's your fault!
He is an amazing professor, but very difficult. You must attend class and pay attention to the lecture. He will help you if you have any questions. Awesome guy...had a lot of fun in the class.
This professor was so confusing, he made my head spin. Not only was it the lowest grade I've ever received (I currently have a 3.76 gpa), but he didn't even count my Writing Intensive portion of the class! Though he's smart, it was almost a complete waste of my time. Tests aren't questions on actual FACTS, but on what the "world-view" would be.
Terrible person, terrible professor. Makes you feel like an idiot. Seems to focus most of his attention on the you females.Humiliates the students that are having trouble with the techniqes. Is very aragant. He thinks he is God's gift to women. He and his classes are a big joke. Avoid this professor at all cost!!!!!!!
All I can say is, avoid avid, avoid!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a nice person.
SHOULD BE FIRED FROM WSU!!!!
A very knowledgeable man and opened my mind to more than I thought was out there. I wish he taught more classes. You must attend classes and take VERY good notes and to make sure to look over them for exams. What is with the duck in the bottle?
as a female student in his karate class i never witnessed or experienced any extra attention or any unfairness. he demonstrated everything multiple times and if anyone didn't understand he demonstrated again. great teacher! i'm taking his karate classes every quarter until i graduate. i don't know why anyone doesn't like him!
Phenomenal professor. As a philosophy student, Eastern philosophy has never been of interest to me. I now really enjoy it. He does not require you to pay $25 to take the workshop for your paper as previously stated. He gives an alternative option. I do not know if his stats are made up or not, I never verified. I doubt others did.
A large majority of his class failed the final exam. That shows that he is not a good teacher. He should not be teaching.
He is rude and arrogant. What more needs to be said?
He believes he knows all the answers to the meaning of our vary existence. Mr. Anastasio you may be educated, but are unprofessional. You should stop putting others down for their personal beliefs.
Not good
The man can't teach
Thought I Liked Him In The Beginning, But He's Really Kind Of Prickish. I Really Wouldn't Recommend Because Of This.
You love him or hate him... has a very distinct personality and teaching style.. many believe he is a prick and picks on people, but really he's only challenging you to consider yourself and your beliefs... many do not enjoy looking at themselves, when someone points out possible flaws :D
This man is the wrost teacher in the world.
It is not for him to point out peoples flaws. The man is a total jerk. He likes to make himself feel superior by making others feel inferior. He should not be a teacher.
Take my advice, find another teacher if you need this subject.
Extremely well informed teacher with a since of humor and a great teaching style. Sadly, most of the students in his class would not open their minds at all to any eastern philosophy.
I very much enjoyed this class. It opened my mind to all the different religions and cultures around the world. I enjoy knowing that, contrary to America's beief, there are other religions out there that do have better ideas.
This is one of favorite classes. He challenges those with strong beliefs, but not because he wants anyone to change what they believe in. He simply wants his students to understand people of different beliefs systems ?as they view themselves? to step into their shoes so to speak.
This man is an amazing teacher. He has aided my understanding not only of the eastern world, but of perspective as a whole. He challenges his students to step outside their own experiences and take a look from the viewpoint of others. I would suggest him to anyone so long as they had a tough skin. He is very sarcastic and can be construed as rude.
I read the posts before taking this class and thought.. "this guy must be a monster." He is quite the opposite! I loved this class. He teaches it well, and he made me want to know more about the subject matter. If you have the opportunity, take this class. You won't regret it at all.
Anastasio is by far my favorite professor at WSU. His knowledge of historic eastern religion is vast and has been extremely influential in shaping my own beliefs. It is clear he has no hatred towards western religions, he merely challenges students to think outside of their own belief system. I would highly, highly, highly, recommend Anastasio.
Nice, very approachable. He will absolutely take the time to answer any of your questions. Attendance is NOT mandatory, but it is if you want to pass. The tests are all t/f and multiple choice, all based on the material covered in class. I NEVER touched the books. Very interesting class, it makes you think. I really enjoyed it!
This is a very hard class to take if you are a Christian - Be warned, you WILL be challenged to back up what you say if you speak up for your beliefs. Anastasio is very intelligent and has several master degrees. He knows what he is talking about but has a very negative side to him.
He is incredibly knowledgeable and really knows what he is talking about. I advise taking the class.
his classes are very interesting
Interesting class. Instructor was knowledgeable and informative. No reliance on textbook - exams are from notes only. His exams really make you think. Be sure to take good notes during lecture and you will do fine.
At first he may seem arrogant and discouraging, but give it some time. If people talk in class it goes smoothly. He's VERY knowledgable on many things, especially the random facts and stats he knows. Do not buy the textbook. I recommend doing the "experiential opportunity" for the paper. It costs money, but is SO much easier to write.
After giving a long lecture on the moral issues our country has, he then proceeded to preach about the positives of using the drugs LSD and Marijuana. This Liberal country hater spends his time teaching a religions class by bashing the United States and promoting the use of illicit drugs. I will be making a formal complaint with the University.
wish i could type >350 words to refute the person who posted earlier. I was in that class with them and the prof did NOT advocate the use of drugs, he discussed Shamanic religions use of them. He did NOT bash the US. He taught the subject of other cultures + challenged students to think beyond their little world. GREAT PROFESSOR, GREAT LECTURES
don't understand earlier comments. Yes, there is a $25 fee for the 'experience opp' but its OPTIONAL. And I would argue that he did NOT profit from this...it was in a yoga studio which according to their website..cancelled classes for that day. Which would indicate that he had rented the studio so we had it to ourselves. That costs.
Carmine was an okay teacher. He's very sarcastic and had the class laughing most of the quarter. He's clear and give plenty of examples. The class is easy if you pay attention and study. A real lecture class. Just tests and a paper.
For the record, he does not preach to his own views. He gives us the point of view of each religion we studied. Great class. opens your mind to a new way of thinking. If you cant understand that, then you probably shouldnt take the class
According to other reviews, he only expressed the feelings of other religions and not his own.According to that mentality, every Non Western religion hates America and that is the focus of their religion.Somehow "non western religion" turned into "America and its culture are terrible" not sure how that applies. His own views, not religious examples.
Awesome prof. Good discussions. Writing intensive class. Midterm, final, and one paper. You can either read a book and write a paper, or go to a yoga thing. If you want to pass, go to the yoga thing!
SUPER entertaining. Took extra time to explain anything we needed him too, and made it all entertaining. I'd gladly take a class with him any day!
This rating is for his Self-Defense class. I have had him in CST class before. He is a fantastic teacher in defense and the martial arts. He is respectful and focuses on the point of being in class. BE QUIET when he says to be quiet, COME on time, and you will do fine. Put your all into it. He really likes that, and you will gain so much more .
Mid-term, final, and paper. The paper is based on the textbooks, unless you take the Experiential Opportunity, which I highly recommend. He may seem to be negatively biased toward Western culture at first, but in reality he simply helps people practice empathy with other cultures. Nice sense of humor, easily approachable. Loved his class.
I am in love with Anastacio. Also, his class is awesome. No text book, he just talks to you the whole time. Do the experiential experience. Hard grader. Very disciplined and very open-minded. Always plays the devils-advocate in discussion.
Decent prof. For a GE, his class is tough (I have a 4.0). We had 3 exams from lecture material and 1 paper. I went to every class & took diligent notes & could barely get a high B on the tests (after the curve). I wrote the paper from the book & it was tough, too. Spend the $25 & do the experience. This class is do-able but not a free ride to an A.
Horrible prof. If you want your GPA to drop, take this class!
It may seem as though he is anti-Western culture at first, but he is simply trying to put other religions in perspective. It is a COMPARATIVE class.DONT MISS CLASS. It is all lecture based, nothing is posted online, and the notes are very subjective. He knows what he is talking about and encourages discussion in class but be prepared to back it up.
At first you won't like him or the class, but as time passes it becomes more clear that he is teaching the subject not trying to influence you to believe anything. He said these aren't his personal beliefs. You do have to pay attention. Didn't do the experience, I used the book. I'm in his Yoga class next semester, bc I loved his class by the end.
Nice guy, if a bit self-righteous. Often goes off-topic to snark at Western culture or anything he dislikes. Lectures felt more like sermons half the time. Tests are confusing and seem designed to trick you. Religious people will definitely want to avoid, unless they enjoy debate.
He is amazing. I hate powerpoint lectures and he just sits and has a discussion with the class. Its very engaging. He tells you exactly what to write down and before each test reviews it in case you missed it but that means you need to be in class. I've been in 4 different colleges since 2007 and he is by far my favorite professor.
He was very interesting and engaging. Definitely pretentious and a bit misinformed in some matters, but worth taking. He is very understanding and easy to comprehend, though extremely argumentative. Don't buy the book right away! Wait until you are sure you want to do the book assignment, as you have an option to do that or a cultural experience.
A lot of people misunderstand Anastasio. He teaches using the Socratic method, and challenges your preconceptions; he's not challenging you, but trying to make you think critically. You don't have to be intellectual, but people who are not rational thinkers, can't back up claims, or are not terribly intelligent won't do well in this class. Amazing!
Anastasio is one of my favorite professors so far. His lectures are interesting, and gives you a lot of examples so you can really understand the material. As others have said, he uses the Socratic method - So don't get mad at him, he's just trying to make you think critically.
He is by far the best professor I've had in my three years at wright state. He never says that western culture or religion is wrong, he just explains the perspective on it from other world views and challenges you to look at your life in a way other than how you were raised. Definitely come with an open mind.
you will learn so much
Hardest class
He believes you need to be in class everyday and pay attention. Which is good but his notes can be confusing. He uses big words that you may have never heard in your life and go through a lot of information in a just one class period. Study the notes that night! If you want to meet with him you have to make an appointment
I LOVEd Anastasio. His lectures are clear and addicting. He teaches with insightful knowledge and I love to listen to him talk. The course was very interesting and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend taking it! He is awesome.
All he does is talk in a very monotone voice the entire 120 minutes which makes the class drag on. He is not clear about material.. write down what he repeats and writes on the board. His tests are nothing like his lectures and try to trick you. Very hard grader. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to.
Carmine is fascinating to listen to, and his classes are easy to succeed in if you go to class, pay attention, and take notes. The material is not exceedingly difficult, and he lectures to large class sizes. Many people take advantage of this and choose to not show up, which results in silly complaints about his competence. Don't listen, he's great
One of the smartest professors I've ever met. I found this course very difficult. No power points, no book, nothing. You take notes strictly off of his lectures. This class was interesting when I understood what was going on. Hard to understand material and frustrating when you can't refer to a book. Probably wouldn't take again.
Borderline genius, knows his material by heart and may come across as condescending. However, he always encourages us to speak up and challenging us to rethink everything we know about the world we live in. Answers any question. ONLY lectures, so take good notes.3 pretty straightforward tests,1 paper. Paper is harder if you don't take his workshop.
Carmine is fascinating and knows the material by heart. I would take him again if I could! The only cons would be you take notes strictly on the lecture and tests are kind of tricky but he's always willing to answer any question you have. He gives extra credit for participation as well which is a nice boost if you don't do well on the tests.
I found this class to be difficult. The tests were hard and he graded my paper pretty hard too. The class isnt on pilot so its hard to know where you stand in the class. Its not mandatory to attend class, but if you dont go, you probably wont do very well. I went to every class and took good notes, and I still got a C.
tests are impossible
Not even done with the course, but you can tell he is not willing to put any effort into creating material for the class (4 total grades). Does not let you review your tests unless you ask... then doesnt show up to the appointment you made. I will be requesting a grade change if I dont receive what I earn, so avoid his classes no matter what.
Very interesting subject and he teaches it well. However, he makes the subject unbearable because his exams are impossible and very subjective. Went to every class and studied hard, still struggled. The class average of the exams went from a D to a C. Non one gets A's, only two or three get B's, nothing you can do about it.
