Tough class, but the nicest lady in the world. Plus a sports fan!
She is extremely smart and knowledgeable, but she is very demanding
loved her as a teacher, would take her again if she didn't grade so hard
the nicest lady, but if you don't get it on your own, get yourself out!
Scary at first, but is really interesting, had her at 8 and was always awake
Extremely nice person and a great teacher. You read the Lord of the Rings.
Great teacher. Loves to teach and share her knowledge. Would deffinitly take
very difficult grader, but is the best teacher I've had at Loyola
She was the first teacher I had at Loyola. 8am, tuesday morning, 1st semester, freshman year. (fall 98) I almost transferred b/c she told me I wasn't good enough. Funny, b/c I graduated at the top of my class. Definitely the worst teacher I've ever had.
Demanding, but amazing

she flunked tom clancy if thats any indication...look where he is now. Hunt for Red October ruled!
She is def a very demanding teacher but a wonderful lady that really wants you to learn. It helps if you're Irish and really know your Lord of the Rings :)

fantastic professor with a lasting impression/the best!
She's great. She knows what she's talking about and definitely very interested in all of her subject matter. One of the best classes I've taken here.
Class is like floating around, having no clue what needs to be done. She gives examples in class and then says that the examples are wrong in handed in papers. No class discussion.
Don't believe the rumors...she's actually a really nice old lady. Only weird part is she calls everyone by their last names.
Class isn't too bad if you can get into it. She's not really as mean as people say, just a hard grader. If you actually read and study you should do ok, but be prepared for the tests. It's not hard to be prepared for class, just follow along in the book.
horrible class, avoid it at all costs. every class gets turned into a sermon about God, and tests are all on the most mundane details. She picks favorites on the first day, and if you're not one of them, get ready for a long and painful semester
This class was miserable. She actually calls on people to go up and write on the board. Her lectures are confusing and offer no real insight into the material. Definately PRETENTIOUS, thinks she's better than people because she has a large vocabulary.

Great teacher, gives you the answers to the tests - Just listen in class! Willing to go out of her way to help you. Most people who don't like her quit right away and don't try. Very insightful.
Will scare the hell out of you at first but really isn't that hard. Old school teaching style with lots of lecture. Oh, and there's a quiz almost every class on the little tiny details in each book. Read carefully. Or get Spark Notes.
If English is your major, you'll love her! She is very informative, challenging, and is really passionate about Literature. Be prepared to work hard, but you'll have a great reward esp. a greater knowledge in your field.
She is a great professor who loves comedy. She will challenge your brain to its extext. She can be very picky on papers, quizzes and tests. Beware! She grades tough!
She is a VERY tough grader, gives very nitpicky quizzes, expects a lot from her students. I would try to avoid her, unless you like being looked down upon.
This was my secondary english core requirement class. Dr. Abromaitas is awesome - I would highly recomend her. SHe's really funny, sarcastic and tells you everything you need to know. She only asks you obvious questions but expects that you know the answers. She's tough but fair.
Dr. Abromaitis was an amazing professor who challenged and cared for her students. Those who say otherwise obviously weren't taking their education seriously!
Tough teacher, but prepares you for other classes. May seem condescending at times, but she is a very intelligent woman. Hard grader, and expects you to memorize tons of vocab word for word. Study for quizzes like tests, and do papers early, and you will do fine.
STAY AWAY!!! Worst professor I have had at Loyola. She is pretentious and miserable, and one of the toughest graders ever. Preaches in class- she taught a Medieval to Renaissance history course without saying one bad thing about the Catholic Church.
She is a tough grader, but she'll also provide a lot of help because she wants everyone to do well. She's a conservataive Christian, so be prepared for that. Overall though, she's one of the best at Loyola.
Awesome teacher. You need to study and turn things in ON TIME in her class. Defnitely worth it. She watches South Park and Mad TV--how bad could that be for a 50+ old woman??
Despite Dr. A's seeming desire for annominity in class, she is more than willing to help you learn if you approach her on a personal basis, outside of class. I learned more during her office hours than I ever did in class. She is a world-class professor, and you would be a fool to think otherwise.

condescending **** who thinks all students are idiots. alot of reading and hard tests and quizzes on the smallest unimportant details.
Brilliant teacher, very committed to treligious ideals of school.
High demands, but you will learn much. Very intelleignet take obn literature.
lectures are boring and tests are soo hard but if you study hard you can defintaly pass.
Challenging teacher; relates literature to broader issues of religion and culture
Very nice lady and she truely knows her field and has a passion for it, read and know the terms verbatim, quizzes are hard at times. Very approachable outside of class and genuinely cares about the well being of her students. Not an easy class though, you have to work for you grade.
Very Tough but Fair teacher. Read the books to pass the quizzes
An excellent teacher! She is so interesting and knowledgable, you would have to be a vegetable to want to cut her class. She challenges her students and made me a better writer. As she was introduced to the late Pope, she is the "one who edits." Don't graduate without talking to her about J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis
Plays favorites. If she does not like you personally it will definitely be reflected in your grades. She prefers female students, so if you are a woman she is easily swayed by brown nosing. But in general I would say stay away. The poor quality of the teaching does not justify the amount of work that is called for.
As an English Major, don't graduate Loyola without taking a class w/ Dr. A. If you want an easy A, she isn't for you. The most learned professor I ever encountered. She can be very old school but that is part of her charm and adds to the difficulty of the class. Some say she plays favorites but even those she admires she is hard on.
rating stacker? there is no way those were written by students.
The smartest teacher I have ever had. Answers all questions and is never mean to honest students. Don't take her class if you don't like reading a lot.
Intelligent and opinionated
She is super hard but you learn a lot in the class. Do not take if you want an easy A because she will challenge you, but if you like being forced to work hard then here is the perfect teacher for you.
Very engaging teacher; clear expectations ane rules; loves her field and it shows.
She's sooo hard...all the other eng101 classes give out easy A's but her class you have to work your ass off for a c
SO HARD... you learn stuff, i'll admit but it doesnt show in your grade at all... don't take her if you want to keep enjoying life.
if you take her class, hope for a C, if you dont get a C you will either have a low D or an F, everybody drops this class
if your an EN major you'd better take her, makes the rest of your career easy! she makes you work and it may not be in your grade, but will definitely make other classes easier. don't procrastinate
Tough teacher but straight forward- Follows the sylabus to the tee!
if you dont love catholicism and reading lots of useless work just know she'll be awful. Oh yeah did I mention she's like 100?
She is strict and straight forward but she explains every peice just about line by line. If you pay attenetion and study, you'll do fine. I have an A in her class and it's not impossible. I LOVE HER
One word: amazing. Hardest class I've ever taken but also the most rewarding. She is an excellent teacher and i loved her class. Definitely worth it in the end. Don't be afraid of her. She has a great sense of humor.
She is really mean! She tells you to ask questions, but then makes you look like an idiot if you don't understand something. She does not help you with the rough drafts of the papers, but expects you to become better writers. How can we become better writers if you don't tell us what you want BEFORE we hand the paper in. Really tough.
She's nice and has good values, but she's a tough grader, and is not as clear as she could be about what she expects out of a paper.
a mean-spirited evil woman whose grading policy is based on witchcraft and the cycles of the moon. write a decent paper, get an f. write a brilliant paper, get a c. if you like memorizing literary terms that you will never use and quizzes that require a doctorate in **** and some kind of psychic abilities, then take her. all others BE WARNE
shes a witch!!!! DONT TAKE IF U LOVE ENGLISH!!
She'll meet with you but you really can't get a sense of what she want's, except perfect grammar. read the material talk about in class, work hard and you'll come out with a C+
I had her for two classes because I learned so much from her and LOVED HER. It is true that this woman is challenging but all classes after hers will be a breeze. Study the terms, read the stories for a basic understanding, and have someone look over your papers for grammar and this class should not be that difficult.
If you have registered for her, turn the other way and run. This is a core and she grades material and demands an effort that of a 300/400 level english class. Even if you try you can easily end up with a C-.
Can't believe what I'm reading here. I had her years ago, but Dr. A was one of the best profs I ever had. Hard? Yeah. Don't take if you need a EN core for a Bio major. But if you're EN, she is one of the best. As far as playing favories and women and suck ups, let me say that I was a huge smarta$$ and male and we got along great. AGL '90
A great teacher that demands a lot. Advice- If you READ the syllabus, and don't procrastinate you'll be fine. She sticks to the syllabus and is one of the best, most knowledgeable techers I've had so far.
Dr. A is the best english teach i've ever had. sure, she's tough, but she's extremely fair, and very entertaining. if you're not willing to do the work, then she's you might hate her. I learned so much from her, and I absolutely love her.
Great teacher. Only difficult, if you don't want to do any work. Here's a unique solution- read the sylabus, attend class and do the class readings! Do those things and you'll be fine.
Very unclear with assignments. Doesn't read rough drafts so you're on your own for papers. Does offer extra credit. Loves to look at books word by word (so boring). Takes a long time getting assignments back so you're almost never sure of your grade. Wouldn't recommend her but it is possible to survive. GOOD LUCK!
Brilliant woman who knows her field backwards and forwards and loves teaching it. I can see how students might be intimidated, as she holds you to a high standard and expects you to work hard (novel concept!), but honestly improved my writing. Extremely clear in syllabus and comments on papers. Really cares about her students. Love her!
I was in her Honors rotation and loved her so much I took my only other English class with her. Not easy classes, but well worth the effort. Encourages student participation in discussions, so it's a far cry from just passively taking in a lecture. She makes you responsible for defending your opinions, which is an education we could all use.
This professor is not open to progressive thinking. She's intolerant of alternative life styles and completely homophobic which leaves me to believe she should retire and allow room for a real jesuit to back into the system.
Nice lady, oldest tenured teacher at Loyola (50 years I think). Knows her stuff, likes participation. Pretty hard and demanding grader. No tests or quizzes just a few papers. Only need to read the book if you're doing a paper on it, otherwise do not bother. Nice lady, knows her stuff, pretty tough grader. Overall not bad.
Only take her if you're dedicated to writing, she's a tough teacher and unless you already know how to analyze and dissect poems (without the help from google) I wouldnt recommend her
Absolutely wonderful! Her tests were just like the quizzes, her quizzes were easy, she takes 50 points out of the denominator to give you a higher score, she is passionate, she has a great book selection so that using the textbooks don't matter, and she didn't fail Tom Clancy; I don't know where that came from, but no. Best teacher in English!
This person will make you think. If you stick to her system, you'll learn to love her just as I have after being convinced that she was my archenemy. If you aren't weak and if you're a risk-taker (for personal benefit), please do yourself a biggie and give her a shot. You won't regret it.
She is a nice woman once you get to know her, but she is a ridiculously hard grader. I would not recommend her as a teacher. There's a lot of heavy reading too.
The acclaimed hardest grader at Loyola, as told to me by my advisor. This class is VERY difficult and everything must be precisely correct or she will marl you down. She is a brilliant woman but I think her class may be too hard for an EN 101. She tells you what will be on quizzes. A very strongly opinionated woman, but nice. Been here for 50 years
Carol is hilarious. Full of random, great advice. People say she is tough grader and this is sort of true. She will always grade the midterm harder than the final. If you do the readings (sometimes a bit long, sometimes not) and take notes you will be fine. She tells you exactly what she expects you to know for the exams and gives out study guides
very hard class. She is so smart but, i would not recommend taking her. She is a tough grader and there are so many easier english teachers and classes offered here that I would skip her unless it was your only option.
If you're taking this course for 2nd level English core- either hold off on taking it or take another professor. Unless you love English and love reading literally do no take this course!! Seems nice, but her grading style is about as old as she is. Don't go into this class thinking taking 2nd english core you'll get an A because you won't.
