talks too fast, too much info covered on tests...don't take this unless ur a psych major or u kno somehting abt psych already....way to time consuming to get a C+
All I have for this lady is one word..."NO". Do not take a course with her. She frequently loses exams, and her lectures are so boring you want to slap some life into her. She is a little loony. My advice would be to find another professor!!!
I know she's all over the place and often loses things but if u listen closely she does know what shes talking about. She has a lot of good things/experiences to share. she's a good teacher!
Too much covered in too little time. She tends to jump too much and barely gives you enough time to write down notes. Goes through it too quickly. I'd go with someone else. Though, she's easy, it's a pain.
Was very friendly to me
I had her for Psychology of Death and Dying and she was really good. The class is easy and it's more talking and going places than reading/studying. I'd Definitely recommend this class with her.
A bit more disorganized than you would usually think a university professor should be, but was rather nice, and spoke clearly and loudly. Not the best prof, but I had no real problems with her.
I had her for Psych of Death and Dying and she was really good. Kind of scatterbrained, but the class was really fun and we did a lot of "field trip" classes. I'd definitely recommend her!
Don't take if you don't like a big lecture hall.
Absent minded professor. Keep on top of her if you hand something in. She has a tendency to lose things (tests, papers, etc.). Her lecture notes are all over the place. She has no rhyme or reason to what she talks about next which is frustrating if you like to keep your topics in order!
She was evrything needed to get fives for all her ratings from me. Her tests could be sort of confusing, but we got to psychoanalyze her.
Shes really smart but she goes really fast, her syllabus is always off, and she doesnt know how to make up clear test. Overall, Id say shes not very good at all.
She speaks quickly, but she knows her stuff. She also is helpful and has a great sense of humor during class. She covers much material but it is enjoyable and she also gives you a lot of handouts. If you want to learn a lot about abnormal behavior, she's the one that do it for you.
Was very good. Liked the class. Papers were corrected quickly, but I missed a class and had to wait a week to get it back. Would take her again.
Moderately difficult class, her "quizzes" are actaully mini tests that killed my grade. She is a bit scattered but if you keep on top of her about it, she seems to come through. Also has amusing stories and great experience; she's crazy, but she knows what she's talking about.
wonderful
Interesting and challenges preconceived notions. Taught about very controversial materials, but did it in a way that helped the class to think about the issues. Makes studnet feel very comfortable talking about topics that are hard to talks about. Defintiely take her,,dont miss out.
Excellent prof...she's great.
Fabulous
She has a tendency to lose your tests, and the tests are pretty confusing, not very clear description. TONS of notes. Keep on top!
Good Prof
LOVED the class. Discussion happenned all the time. However I did -no exagg- 20 hours of HW a week. But it helped at work and I play diagnose all the time with my friends!
Awesome professor. Took 5 of her undergrad/grad classes. She was also my advisor. Extremely helpful. Classes were great.
Shes great!!!! I loved her. I had her for a bunch of classes, she was my advisor, and she supervised my internship. She was always there for advice and questions
Its a good class, lots of ways to get ridiculous amounts of extra credit, the only things is that she goes way to fast, and wont stop to explain.
She was great. She changed my life! Told me about a large number of really interesting topic. decided to become a psych major because of this course. Take the course and really listen and think about the topics. you think about them after the class. I have written back to her about some of the things she talked about. I notice them more now. Had to
Good teacher.
Big class. Lecture. Basically if you missed a class you're screwed. If you're good at taking notes very fast and listening very well, you should be fine. I didn't do that well. She has a tendency to put things on her tests that are only in the book and nothing that was discussed. One of the "tricky" types. Nice enough, but not helpful by any means.
amazing class. fantastic teacher. lots of work
really great teacher and very understanding the course work and tests were easy. one of the best psy teachers ever
Awesome professor very enthusiastic and knowledgable, The best Psych teacher ever. Take her class you won't regret it.
I loved Dr. Austad and the way she taught the class. Very helpful and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. I came alive and I know what she taught will help me when I work!
Difficult class, but do-able if you go to class, pay attention and do the work. Very interesting lectures, and she brings a lot of personal experiences to the class. Understanding, and clear.
I liked her very much. She did an excellent job. I definitely would take her again and recommend her for any class. She gave personal examples. She did not let this other jerky student take over the class but did it with caring.
Great prof. Helped me a lot. Available for students.
Excellent prof. Lots of notes and power points. Very organized and on top of things. Good sense of humor and very helpful.
One of the most interesting professors and knowledgable that I have ever had. Extremely wonderful and a great person to have teaching Psychology. If you want the BEST, Dr. Austad ranks very high in my book.
Dr. Austad is the best professor at ccsu for psychology. shes helpful and will bend over backwords to help her students pass the class. go to class it will help your final grade, she knows her stuff and will notice you missing. will answer any question you want. shes very liberal but is open to everyones point of view unlike most liberal professors
Great prof. Helpful, smart, lots of laughs, and I'd take her anytime. If you have a problem, you can talk to her. I did and it really helped. She cares about her students and takes time with them. I had a big family crisis and she really helped me out.
Class was difficult, and there is a lot of work. However you learn alot and Dr. Austad is very knowledgable on the subject matter.
This class isn't like most psych classes. It lacks structure, and all we do is have a guest speaker every class or watch a movie. Tests on what guest speakers talk about. A couple papers and one big group project, as well as a 30 entry journal. Seems disorganized in this class-not what I expected
I do not recommend this professor for this course. Every class period there's either a guest speaker, a video, or the prof reads off her slides. I don't think she actually knows anything about the subject so I don't think it's fair that I paid all this tuition money and I'm not getting an adequate education.
The professor is sweet, well-meaning, and really tries to help students. However, she's also pretty careless about her quizzes, which always have typos, and she even called Dr. Tomoda "Dr. Tomato!" I was stunned. I recommend this film class because she doesn't say much, but probably wouldn't take another course with her.
Very nice professor who is passionate and very knowledgeable about her subject. She can be disorganized though. Class is challenging, but doable - a combination of papers and exams. You'll do fine if you go to class & hand in your work on time.
Very interesting and interesting teacher. Presents lots of materials -- readings, power points, and represents moral dilemmas and problems. This course should be a requirement, etc. for all incoming students, my whole family passed away last month and I was able to cope on my own!
Great class period. I really enjoyed the material.Guest speakers were terrific, so there was someone who really knew what they were talking about for many of the classes. Tests were easy. I recommend taking this class because it is so different from other psychology classes not to mention that peace is a good topic.
Very energetic and you can tell she loves the material.cares about the students and is careful to accept everyone's views and not put anyone down even though you know she is on the side of peace. Good sense of humor and very organized.I liked the journal and her comments on entries. Also, readings posted on line. Best class I had at CCSU
Great course. Professor is very knowledgeable and easy to understand.Brings examples from real life experience. She used her own text which I liked because it was easy to follow. Definitely take her if you like to learn about people.
Great teacher. Nice person and kind to students. She gives you a break and is understanding. She makes the class interesting because she brings up her own personal experiences working with patients. I went to her study groups before exams. Only a few showed up, but she was so helpful to us. Go to the study groups,
Dr. A is one of the prof is the psych department. Always willing to help students. Your able to walk by her office and most likely will drop everything shes doing to help you. Shes also one of the only peace studies prof that does not have political bias. which is refreshing at a school like ccsu
Very good professor. She describes what it is like to work in the field. She makes sense and does not sound like a book. Makes it worthwhile to go to class. Also, tests are fair and she is helpful when you ask questions.
One of the best teachers I have had thus far in college. She is intelligent and helpful. Take this class if you can. She gives extra credit options and always have office hours. Just do your work!
Dr. Austad is an intelligent woman, especially with War and Peace Through Film. The class is pretty hard to fail, I mean if you show up and watch the movies, you'll do great on the quizzes (which are online and you can just google the answers to). The final are just opinionated questions!
Dr. Austad is an awesome teacher. This is the third class I took with her. She delved into the the subject of abnormal psychology with a current lens for understanding the real world and how you work with patients.
This class really taught loads me about abnormal psychology, and the format was as good as I got in the military. Dr Austad’s relaxed and real life style really helped me learn. I wish more classes were taught like this.
This professor is one of the useful I have had, and is also one of the coolest. I would highly recommend her, and it doesn't matter what class you have her for.She is really helpful and cares.
Fun and very interesting class. Multiple assignments/projects but she is an easy grader. If you go to all the classes it's an easy A.
Awesome class. Although assignments were many and tough at times--lots of material--it was always fun and informative. The professor has an easy style that allows students to discuss just about any topic without feeling stupid or judged. I like the feel of freeness to the class. Can say what I think and feel.
Professor Austad is a nice down to Earth woman who makes you learn a lot. She will put you to work and make you learn, which is why i like her. My only problem with the course is that she allows too many students to discuss their boring person lives (such as who has a disorder in their family) and it really takes away from precious call time.
Fun professor and interesting class, heavy load of material but tests were reasonable. Four easy papers. Don't buy the book, she goes completely by powerpoints you go over in clas.
Dr. A. legitimately helped me through all 4 years of my undergrad. I got to know her very well and did everything she could to help me succeed. Her classes were a bit difficult at least for me but if you go the time flys by. She makes every student feel comfortable which in my experience with Central is rare for a professor. Take her classes!
Professor Austad is a great professor with lots of inspiration and tells a lot of stories about her careers to help us understand the material. You go through a lot of material and pretty fast so attending class is pretty essential in passing. All power points are on BB though, she wants you to pass the class and will help you
Great professor. She tells really interesting stories. Attendance is mandatory or have a friend sign you in. 3 exams that you NEED to study for along with some easy papers. Take advantage of the extra credits which is equal to a paper. Book is not necessary but it is really really helpful. Downside, she makes alot of grammatical errors.
online psychotherapy class. She wrote the mandatory textbook you need, mandatory because the only thing you're graded on are the 5 tests, which take questions from the book. For an online class, i spent little time online, but rather teaching myself about the topic. She has power points, only one of which is voice captioned. avoid this at all cost
This was a 21 day online class over winter break and it is not for the faint of heart. I enjoyed the class but it was a lot of work. The professor was more than willing to help and the tests she assigned are very application based. She also assigned papers that were interesting and thought provoking.
It was an easy class. We were a lecture of 200 people so she did not care much but if you go to her office hours she will explain everything that you do not understand and will help you to succeed and get a good grade
It was an AMAZING class. I never though that i would read a book for fun. I read the book for abnormal twice. Thats how amazing this class is, she helps students as much as she can, for example we wrote 5 short essays and if you ask her for help she will help you to edit and add things that you are missing and by trying she will give you an A
This class was really interesting because it covers many topics. Midterm is easy, final was online and opinion based. One group project with an essay and poster presentation, and there were a few response papers. Really easy class. Go to class because attendance counts the most for your grade.
Easiest class I've taken. Grade is mostly composed of attendence. The teacher is not very tech-savvy which is annoying in a class revolved around movies. She can also be very rude, especially in her emails. Overall though the class was an easy A and some of the movies were quite interesting.
Dr. Austad is the best professor I've ever had. She certainly knows how to use the technology for the movies, and makes the class come alive. Anytime you need her she is there to help.
Easy A. Grade is based off attendance and a quiz after every movie. Show up, pay attention to the movie and its an easy A
SHOW UP TO CLASS. The whole class is watching war movies, some boring, but she gives you a paper to fill out with name, signature, time in and tie out of the class so she knows if you even stayed the whole time. Quizzes are about the movie and are online.
The class itself was as easy as they come (show up, watch movies, take a brief quiz on said movie). The weekly quizzes were a problem (comedically easy, grammatically all over the map with many spelling errors) but the class was still interesting and worthwhile. I imagine Prof. Austed benefits from smaller class sizes.
I loved this class. It taught me pratical skills. Will be helpful in future for me. Amazing lectures. Always interesting. This is second course I took for her. I would take a third! Very knowledgeable about therapy and psych
Lot's of information about abnormal psychology. Real hands on experience. Talks about cases. Gives history and how to handle cases. Every class was very interesting and packed full. Many opportunities for grading. Fair tests. Frequents quizzes. Dr. Austad is the best. Very helpful and kine.
Great prof
Dr. Austad is wonderful and a kind professor, however, she sometimes doesn't follow the syllabus or isn't clear about what is expected of students. While I understand she has every right to change the syllabus, it would be nice to give us a heads up. Overall though, she's very kind and this class isn't difficult. Lots of meditation!
Every week she provides material and a quiz that reflects the material really well, one paper and final exam. It is not difficult at all and she always gives extra credit opportunities, so you can make an A. She actually cares, one of the best professor I ever had!
I had not had Professor Austad before Stress Management and Wellbeing but I would never take her again. I thought this class would be somewhat light and not graded too hard, but she makes it miserable. Being graded on how well you are able to relax is pretty counterintuitive. Save yourself the time and mental trouble and take a different class.
Dr. Austad is a good professor, attendance counts as extra credit. Powerpoints are terribly long but very understandable. She doesn't really answer emails, but you can do fairly well if you do all the work. A lot of extra credit opportunities. 4 short tests, a few papers, midterm, and final. Take her
Extremely interesting lectures! Asks for feedback on what students like/dislike and makes changes to cater more towards students needs. Front loads semester with homework that way you are done sooner. All exams online and straightforward. Hard not to do well
Lecture was very boring and wordy. The tests were all online and had no time limit but were quite long. There were 3 course papers that weren't too hard but kind of boring. Also, had to attend an AA meeting for one of the papers. Overall, boring but easy A/B class.
Professor showed little interest in being there to teach the class. All we did was watch films & have surface-level discussions (if you can even call them discussions) followed by online quizzes that don't require any real knowledge of the content. I learned nothing from this class. If you want an easy A I guess go for it but I say it's a waste.
Class is boring but not too bad, she is a good professor who tries to make class as engaging as possible. Tests are open-ended with no time limit but they tend to get repetitive and take a while.
I love Professor Austad. I think that she tries best to have it so then most people can achieve in class by posting all the slides in class as well as having tests on our computers. The lectures are very boring, but she grades for attendance.
