Since I came to this web site and saw the comments, I was a little afraid to take her class before. However, she is not that bad. Though grade maybe not that good, you can learn a lot in her class, and it's very helpful.

She is bad, hard and mean if you don't do the homework, you will be kicked out, but she grade fairly on writing. Besides that it is easy to get an A on essay, and she gives a little homework.Sedond person: I think that she is good, really helpful, speak very clear, but she give a lot of homework.

She checks word by word even though only a few revisions. She is so perfectionist. Even though your tutor thinks your essay is good, She would not think so. it is hard to get an A. boring class.
If you really want to learn English and take an interesing class,she is a great teacher that you can take. Otherwise, don't go to her class if you are busy to work or you are lazy because she will teach a lot of English in class, and give your a lot of homework.
i took her class in 2004. in her class, people need to word hard and a lot of homework. you have to go to the lab. It is the class with more effort. You will have hard time taking this class. I recommend you to take this class if you are ready to challenge it. Even though you get a C in this class, you will know at the end that this class is helpful for improving your essay skill. Prof. Curtis is little picky, but she is a good professor.

I took Ms.Curtis ESL33A last semester and I found it very helpful for my ESL 33B class. The professor is strict but she will ensure that you improve your writing skills from her class. I strongly recommand her if your goal is to have good writing skills. If you work hard, it's not so hard to get A or B in her class.

To be honest, she's not an easy grader. However, it's not very difficult to get an A, or at least a B at her class, as long as you show a positive attitude in the class. If you can activily participate in the class and revise your essays frequently, it's quite simple to get a good grade.
I have a friend who has a 3.9 GPA and transfered to UC Berkeley,and when he took this class,he got a D,which he failed,but he got A in both 33B and engl 1A,how r u gonna explain dat?Adds this prof doesnt have basic teaching moral, she spends much time talking about chinese r bad N how she does not get along with japanese when she lived in Japan.OMG

Taking her class is my biggest mistake. Don't ever think about an easy A in here.. She focus on writing, but she is extremely hard grader.About 5students drop her class before the end of the semester. Only 1-2 persons got an A and B, the rest of them end it up with C and D, which is mean DON'T PASS!!
What I can say is...Is she a teacher?I just took her class and no one got an A.Boring Lecture(She thinks she is interesting),stupid jokes(She thinks they are funny),she definitely needs a MAN.

Actually, she is not that bad. She is a strick professor, but if you got a good grade on your writting, that means your writting is really good.=) She gives a lot of homeworks and in-class writing. It is stressful, I couldn't even handle it. However, after I go through all the tiring things, I realized that my writing skill already improved=)

Actually, Prof. Curtis is not a bad teacher, she is very kind.However..... She told us to buy 2 books written by her but I think the content of books are not clear and confused, I understood all knowledege after I had read other grammar books, sometimes her lecture is unclear espiecially when check the answers in the text books.

She can not explain the subject clearly,you have to use other resources.She is very unfair in grading, she passed some students who still have gramatical errors in thir speach and writing,i guess she is playing favoritizm for students which is really unfair with rest of the students with the same level.

She is really great! I took her 33A class last semester, and she gave me A. Her class is kind of hard, but if you study hard, which is the one of responsibilities of a college student, you will be fine, and at least you can get B. she really cares about her students' writing, which is perfect cause we need writing in college.
By the way, those students that are not ready for college and lazy, don't take her cause obviously you won't pass. Take her if you want to improve your writing. No matter what grade you will get, you will find out you improve a lot!
if students want to pass her class, they just need to finish all the HW (usually spend 2 hours to do that for every meeting). however u will see the improvment during her class. she is a very great and helpful professor. eventhough she looks mean, in fact she is a super nice person. she will answer any question u asked. the best teacher at PCC

She is a hard grader, but she is always willing to help students. Go to her office hours, you will gain a lot from it. Very interesting textbook. It will help you to thrive in the next level like ESL 33B and Engl 1A.

she is not a nice professor. She is very selective in treating her students for unknown reasons, and 50% of your grades will be based on the impression that you give to her. I mean the relationship between students and her. She does not meet the requirement of being a good professor overall. its a challenge class, take it if you dot care your grade
Great professor!!! Her lecture is clear and easy to understand. She tried to help her students.Her class was interesting, so that's why I didn't feel bored in her class. After taking her class, my english has improved a lot. Professor Curtis is the best.

Really tough grader. You never know what is her expectation because it is always changing. She is only helpful when you email her and she will respond. Other than that, make your decision wisely

Never smiles. College1 is a 3-units-class, but the time I spent on it was much more than my 5-unit-class. Half of my classmates dropped her class after the first day. I tried my best and finally got B. I believed no one could get A from her.

She teaches really detailed in grammar and give you template for every essay. Btw, she asked you to write 4 drafts for each essay, 4 essays for a portfolio and a lot of stuffs. Also doing team work for poster. I would say its not boring, helpful somehow but time-consuming. I dont think its an easy A for who is not good in grammar & writing

Ok so this professor has been by far one of the worst professors I have encountered. She literally does not explain anything. She assigns homework and does not explain anything. When she grades the homework she wants it perfect and it's hard to meet her requirement because she does not explain anything in class. Her canvas layout is sloppy too.

I'll make this short and sweet: I can not believe she is a teacher, she seems miserable and makes her student miserable as well.
For an introductory college 1 class, Curtis is the one you should avoid like the plague. She makes her class unnecessarily harder than it has to be, and she usually is sarcastic, and unwilling to help students succeed in her class without putting them down.
This is an honors class so the workload isnt horrible, but she does take off points for the smallest errors. She uses a rubric to grade everything, so if one were to follow it exactly as they did the assignment, they would do fairly well in her class. class drags on. Shes sometimes very condescending, sarcastic and rude to her students.
Prof. Curtis is a nice person, but I suggest you take another professor. She does journals which can be helpful at times & even brings her students food. However, she treats College 01 like its a major class, and she is a VERY TOUGH grader. She makes College 01 way harder than it has to be. She also doesn't answer questions very well & can be vague
A teacher teaches English skills and knowledge to students, but how to use it is the student's job. Would you like to get a nice grade? Try to learn more for yourself.
This is the best English class I have ever taken. I not only learned a lot of excellent grammar in class, but also read a lot of interesting articles. In ESL033B I have more confidence to face the next ENG1A, this is a great course! I highly recommend!
Actually, this is the best professor I've ever had. As a non-native English speaker, the process of learning English makes me frustrated and even lose confidence. However, after taking professor Curtis's course, I am full of confidence in English. There is really a lot to learn from her classes. It's easy to get an A when you finish your homework !
She is a good professor. Gave a lot of assignments but was useful. Develop your writing and reading skills. Also, improve your critical thinking. She will forgive and give you a second chance if you tried to correct it.
She is one harsh grader and a perfectionist! will base anything on her rubrics.^ ^ She gave too many assignments on the weekends.. Just too much to take, especially if you have a hard time with your English vocabulary. Most of all she will ask you to write an essay-driven paper right on the spot in the class which is ridiculous.
One of the worst professors when it comes to grading. Test grading is just horrible. A 20-question test with 2 mistakes gets you 80% with her scoring when it should be 90%. Too many assignments to do which are only 10% of your grade. Her grading system is the worst.
Very dull class and the professor didn't even take this seriously, the grades were graded poorly, and the worst part is some of my grades were taken away for no reason, they had just been marked as 0. And the assignment wasn't even late or poor on effort. I spent a long time finishing the project.

Very controversial textbook choice, the textbook was written by high school graduating students writing a book expressing their views on race in America. 95% of the book is documenting what others think about race by the authors orally interviewing them. 2.Treating students as if doing the dog obedience training. Should treat students as human!

The class is not hard, but the prof. makes it hard. She doesn't hesitate to take off points. If you want to learn, take her class, but difficult A.

Professor Curtis runs a demanding ESL class with a heavy workload. While the grading is strict, unstuck ai can help with study prep. Take the class if you're up for the challenge.

ESL class? For nonnative speakers, first semester international students here without experience in the US before, especially the ESL 103 Course should be a very basic entry level English help those who is unconfident to speak. HOWEVER SHE SUPPOSES YOU CAN READ 50 PAGES BOOK A WEEK AND BE TOO STRICT TO YOUR ENGLISH ABILITY, YOU CAN FEEL UPSET.
I highly recommend Professor Curtis to anyone serious about improving their English skills. She's deeply committed to helping students truly understand the concepts, rather than simply making the class easy. If you recognize and match her commitment, you'll not only grow academically but are likely to earn an A.
