fascinating lectures.
awesome, just awesome
interesting lectures, very helpful & sympathetic w/ papers, friendly & funny
A great teacher. I will be taking more of her classes!
The BEST prof I've ever had! Expects your best work, as profs should.
So helpful. She still helps me out and says hi even when I'm not in her classes
No Comments
carol is the most amazing teacher i have ever encountered. she is passionate about what she teaches and goes out of her way to help students. i want to be like carol when i grow up. she's also a hella lot of fun.
Carol is sharp, precise, encouraging and challenging. I learned that experiments in writing can be very successful through taking her class. I love her challenging style and would recommend her to anyone. She's so much fun!
Amazing prof! She is absolutely brilliant and loves what she teaches! A lot of work and she expects a lot from you, but she makes you want to work hard! Completely awesome!
She is rude
I had her for first year and absolutely loved women in lit. She is highly intelligent and four years later, I still remember the things she taught in class.
Carol is, by far, the most coherent and passionately engaged teacher I've ever had. She is fair to a fault and makes the classroom into a place of dialogue, not monologue. She rocks!
Very difficult!
She is a very tough teacher, as a few are, but her problem is that she is not consistent. She expects you to just know what she wants and does not keep that expectation the same. You never know and that makes it too hard to get a good mark in her class. If you can kiss ass, MAYBE that will help.
I agree!
Carol is just awesome--more helpful than any other prof I've had and dripping with enthusiasm. The assignments were clearly laid out and she was always available to help above and beyond the call of duty. Take her classes; you won't regret it.
CAROL IS UNAPPROACHABLE, RUDE AND VERY BORING. IF MORE THEN HALF OF YOUR CLASS FAILED BOTH THE MIDTERM AND FINAL PAPER, THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD RE-EVALUATE YOUR TEACHING AND MARKING SKILLS, MS.DAVISON.
Professor Davison was more than fair in this course, offering us all the chance to rewrite our essays (which no one failed...so I don't know what the "sour grapes" person below--who can't spell--is talking about). A few people failed the midterm and Carol even rearranged our grade to help us out.
Easy on the eyes and utterly brilliant--what more is needed to keep your attention?
I can't believe how bad of a review this woman is getting. She knows her stuff!"monsters" was my one of my fav. classes last semester, dr. Davison really likes teaching and shes always open to ppl's views, books and films mixed, it was one of the best classes i've taken-- you wont be disapointed!
Extremely rude I must say. She failed to give students details on our first written assignment until the class before it was due and then gave half the class zero. On the midterm she misquoted some theorists and then penalized students who had a better understanding of the theorists that she did. Utterly unflexable to say the least:-(
Carol has given us so many chances to improve and always provides instructions well in advance. The person below lies, lies, lies! How sad when the most concerned and helpful profs get no respect. This class is great and the person below is rude! I'll take another class with her if I can. I am learning so much.
Tends to lecture at students, does not listen to opinions that differ from her own. Professor has obvious "favorites" in her class. Inconsistent marking.
Ms. Davison's brilliance cannot be ignored-in fact she can't quite get over it either. If you want to worship at Ms. Davison's altar instead of getting an education, then take one of her classes. Be prepared for a shining intellect that is marred by a gross lack of emotional maturity. Such pettiness, such arrogance!
Horrible when half the class drops ! ALso not a good sign when over half that stayed fail an outline. Good content... very bad method.
Loved her class and helpfulness. She is very approachable and understanding. I learned a lot.
She killed my interest in Victorian Lit. Not only did she assign an insane amount of reading, she was a diabolical marker. She was also impolite, insulting students both in private and in front of the class. She was extremely unhelpful during office hours, giving advice consisting entirely of "you're wrong." Hope she gets her act together!
She gave a midterm consisting of questions about a poem, THEN forced us to analyze it after she has already made us talk about it earlier for marks. She was a very hard marker and liked to branch off into different directions unrelated to the course.
A fantastic professor. She is very enthusiastic about the material. Amazing reading list for the class! She doesn't just give you a good grade for showing up, you have to work for it. That being said, she's very understanding when everyone does badly on something early on, and gives you an opportunity to make up for it. Fantastic woman & professor!
She is highly disorganized and unfocused. She is also rude to students and has a complex when provided with other information that may be correct. Her methods are terrible, and made me dislike her and the class. She explains more examples then text, and her midterms are bogus.
Don't know how she stay focused when everyone was talking all the time. She was interesting and serious. Good prof. Even funny at times.
Anyone who thinks she sucked clearly weren't paying attention or doing the work. Your not a baby anymore she doesn't have to hold your hand, the professor is there to deliver her material in a way that suggests you actually read the crap before going to class. This is UNIVERSITY time to grow up.
Seems approachable. But some days she seems to like you, other days she seems to dislike you very much. Extremely hard marker, and very inconsistent. She branches off to things that don't deal with the course and expects you to cover everything in your work, whether studied in class or not. She is an okay prof, but i wouldn't take her again.
Topic was Monsters. Reading list was awesome, and Prof. Davison really knows her material and conveys it well. She loaded too much material to be covered, however, for a 200 course (I'm an Eng major and even I thought it was a bit heavy). Also, "attendance" marks didn't turn out to be actual attendance marks as you had to participate to get them...
I had Dr. Davison for topics: death to victorian lit and it was by far the best class and I have taken and hands down the best proff in the English faculty. She is so understanding and is willing to go the extra mile in order to see you succeed. She have my class an extensions for a paper twice! I highly suggest this proff.
This woman changed my life. She is an amazing mind. I cannot say enough good things about her.
Dr. Davison's lectures are really clear and intriguing. Enthusiastic about what she teaches. Tests easy- terms, passage analysis, and short answers. Understanding of students' stress and needs-worked with class to make it less stressful (due dates, make-up assignments, less novels, final not cumulative ). Exceptional prof! Highly recommend!
Probably the best, most helpful professor I have ever had. I enjoyed going to her for extra help and she never made you feel like your thoughts were wrong and would help you reconstruct them so that they could be applied to a paper. She was beyond nice and approachable. She is passionate about what she teaches! She makes going to class fun.
She really, really loves Victorian lit. and the macabre which makes her kinda hot. She assigns a lot of extra reading that would help with essays and ideas. I kept them because they were really interesting. She's available for help and not condescending. However we read too much for the amount we analyzed. Take her, but go to class and read.
Carol is nice as hell but she's also scatterbrained and difficult to follow. I never knew if what I was writing down was actually necessary. Also, for her Victorian Underworlds class she assigned us six novels (four of which we had to read) which was stressful, considering we have other classes. Her grading was also all over the place.
Amazing prof. Absolutely amazing. Do the readings and go to class and you can excel
She can be all over as far as what she wants in class and on the exams. For all exams and essays for the Women in Lit. course, find out what and how to take them. There was alot of material and you better read it or it won't help your final grade. If you're not an English major, don't take this course. If you are, still don't take this course.
Passionate teacher, one can tell that she really cares about the topics. And that's good, it shows they're into it. She was very fair, she knew we as a class had difficulty doing the exams so she changed some things up to help us. She even haves us a list of stuff to work on for our essays after our first three which was appreciated. Very good prof
An extremely respected professor in the English department, and for good reason. Her course had interesting material, she was clearly passionate about the topic and I was actually excited to do the reading. Yes, her exams can be challenging (many wrote until the last second) - but if you study hard and take an interest, you will do well. Rewarding.
Dr. Davison was extremely compassionate and flexible. I could tell she genuinely cared about my performance in her class. She went out of her way more than once to ensure that we all had a fair shot at success (I've never experienced that before). Class material is genuinely fun to read/write about and her lectures are passionate and engaging.
This was a very interesting and well-presented class. Not only is the literature well-chosen, Dr. Davison is a great professor. She is enthusiastic and invested in the content she conveys and I genuinely felt that I learned a lot. I especially enjoy when she connects the course content to actual world issues, making it all the more relevant.
Davison is one of the most amazing professors Ive had in University. Her lectures are always interested and well thought you. Shes also very understanding of students personal lives and other matters. 10/10 recommend not only this class, but Davison as a professor in general.
The monsters class she teaches is amazing. It's a lot of reading, but luckily all the books and papers she chooses are super interesting. She has a very heavy lecture based class, but every one was interesting and I found myself very focused on what she had to say. Dr. Davison has so much amazing knowledge to share her classes are wonderful!
Outstanding lectures. Dr. Davison always discussed important topics from each of the novels that were studied. As a non-english major I thought that I would have struggled much more in this class! Everything covered was very interesting, and I enjoyed going to every class. Tip: try to keep up with good note taking, specifically definitions!
Carol is an extremely kind professor, Id say I took a lot from her our monsters and ourselves class. I highly recommend this course if your interested in learning a lot from a professor who shows a lot of interest in what shes teaching. She loves her work and I really respect that. Attend the lectures and pay attention and itll reflect in grades
Dr. Davison is so sweet and went above and beyond for her students to do well. Far from rubbish! As a non English major, I found grading difficult but still Dr. Davison was my favorite prof this semester. You have to go to class and take notes for definitions. It is clear Dr. Davison loves what she teaches and cares for her students.
Professor Davison's Our Monsters, Ourselves class was a truly engaging experience. You can tell that she is passionate about what she teaches. The class was difficult but in that way it was enriching and I have so much appreciation for Professor Davison and what she does.
She's a tough grader. I don't think anyone should take this class unless they need to. It's a lot of reading (expected) and takes up a large amount of time. It's really stressful and isn't worth it for a C average.
Very lecture heavy, more lecture than we would have time for if we were in a classroom setting.
Interesting concepts and requires holistic knowledge about the time period the literature is placed in. The topics are interesting so it's not hard to stay involved with the course material. Also, Dr. Davison is a total master in her field. You can tell she is enthusiastic which resonated with me, and I feel like I actually KNOW about Victorian lit
Dr. Davidson is extremely intelligent and proves that she knows her stuff throughout the course. This makes her lectures interesting, but also requires you to pay attention. If you put in your best effort, you will receive good mark. Overall, she is fair in her grading and assignments, and I really enjoyed her Victorian literature class.
Professor Davison lays out her expectations clearly and has been very accommodating during COVID-19 and all of the other stresses that have come with it. I have genuinely enjoyed her lectures and the formats of the tests. Overall, she is fair and you can tell she is passionate about both the material and her students.
Knows what shes talking about, but expects you to know just as much. Shes a hard marker who is difficult to negotiate with if she doesnt understand your views. She was accommodating in terms of workload during a pandemic, but almost doubled what regular lecture hours would require. Extremely detail and definition oriented. Focused on particulars
way too many lecture hours uploaded and then deleted weekly. very unreasonable. she an intelligent women and good lecturer but talks way too fast, hard to keep up and deadlines are strict. will give you a 0 if you hand something in 5 minutes late.
While she was very knowledgeable about the class content, she was scatterbrained and a very tough grader. She would delete lectures after 3 weeks of being up for no discernable reason. The grading criteria were not followed very well. The essay assignment stated that it would be an informal essay but you would then lose marks for informalities.
This prof is incredibly toxic. If she doesn't like you, your grades will suffer. The essay's outline was not done well so a lot of people got a bad grade. She marks based off of her own opinion, her lectures are horrible, she does not care if you have mental health issues. Also, she reads and talks about these ratings, so unprofessional. Do better.
I wouldnt take class with her again in you paid me. Lectures get taken down after a few weeks & before exams. I was an A+ student in HS english and essays, but this prof is a very hard grader. NO examples for how she wants stuff formatted for essays etc. Basically learning on the fly with things worth 40%. Only 3 assessments so u get 0 feedback.
Lectures were quite interesting, and she allowed students to exercise their own critical thinking skills and take alternative approaches as long as you could back it up. Lots of lecture hours, but they were interesting. Tough grader according to some others in the class, but perhaps that was on them for not keeping up with the readings.
Clearly very passionate about her subject her passion increased my enthusiasm for the course. The lectures were very very goodmake sure you take not of everything. I learned a lot. I couldve done better in the course, but I think thats more due to the online format than the prof.
Very passionate professor; however, for a course open to students from all faculties and at the 1000 level this coursea difficulty and her expectations were rough. If youre a student in need of an English course for professional schools and need to maintain your GPA this isnt the course to take. A bit disappointed with marking :/
Deletes lectures to "keep people from falling behind." Only 3 assignments (the midterm, an essay, and final exam) and she failed everyone on the essays in my class (which were worth 20% of your final grade). I couldn't find my mark anywhere for the midterm. I ended up dropping a little more than halfway through. Would NOT recommend it!!
I had a terrible experience with Davison. She made our synchronous class essentially asynchronous, rarely having class and instead posting lectures. She is a very difficult grader, and lets her TA run wild and grade ridiculously hard. She assigns a ton of reading with very little guidance, posts tons of lectures and expects you to take note of all.
I took Dr. Davison twice and I loved her each time. She picks timeless novels and explains them wonderfully. She helped the whole class improve our grades countless times and always offered to help during office hours. I can tell she is passionate about Gothic literature, and now, so am I! I hope to teach some Victorian literature, too.
Davison is a great prof and good at lecturing and I enjoyed the content! It can be tricky. You really need to pay attention cause the answers for test questions are pulled straight from her lectures and the readings. I find that she is very specific about what she is looking for in responses and on essays. You just need to figure out what that is.
Davison's expectations are high, but only because she's so close to the work, and THOROUGH in her lectures. Her tests may be tricky, but she was extremely generous in her efforts to raise the average and help those struggling to succeed. She followed ALL of the COVID protocol as per the U's instructions. If you got COVID, that's on you.
There was a misunderstanding about the policies. Dr. Davison is allowed to be mask-less at the front of the room as long as she stays there. While a friend did get Covid at the same time as the prof, no rules were technically broken. Unfortunately, reviews cannot be retracted by the writers once posted.
this professor reads all the comments on here btw because she mentioned it the beginning of the semester (HELLO!!) everything is true she doesn't grade anything her TA does all the work. its hard to talk with her over email
Davison spends more time reading the comments on this website then refining her educational methods. She concerns herself more with obtaining good reviews on a meaningless website than providing useful feedback, keeping students engaged, and writing tests that do not require the most specific answers. I hope to avoid taking a class with her again.
Davison is so passionate about the material she covers in class that it's hard to not be interested. She's a tough marker but gives you many opportunities to raise your mark or get feedback from her so u can genuinely understand the course material better. I've never had a professor care so much about their students and their academic journeys.
I just want other students to know to avoid this teacher at all costs!!!! I've been to every class and bought all the books. Don't take this class if you value your hard earned money and your time. She drones on forever about irrelevant topics you're expected to use after bleeding your wallet dry for textbooks and books. I recommend avoiding her!!!
This professor is the greatest professor you'll ever find. She grades fairly and treats all of her students with respect. She takes her job seriously and is well respected. The experience in her class is extremely enjoyable!
She is very passionate about her teaching , research and she cares about her students. She is very detailed about her lecture and she provided many different sources for students to study. She is also pretty easy to reach out too.
Loved both Victorian lit classes I took with her! Fair marking and not too many assignments. There is a lot of reading, but she selects great material. One of my favourite English profs
I took her class for Victorian lit and I am glad to say I dropped her class. She has TA's mark ridiculously hard. I remember getting all the answers correctly but the TA marking that I should have added this or wrote this! But I still answered the questions right. This prof needs to do better. Start caring about students when they email you!
Terrible! Avoid her class. There are better English Professors with higher reviews that actually care about students! If you are an English major and work hard for the grades you receive and love literature then avoid her class which inevitably destroys your passion for anything and leaves you Burnt out.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! quite literally the worst prof her tests are extremely difficult and tests you on the most specific things. i took this as a elective and regretted it every since. she is probably the worst professor i have encountered.
Do not take this class! She gives extremely tough exams and does not take criticism or help you in any way. Her exams are very very specific and unless you have a photographic memory, you will not come close to passing. Beware this class.
I dropped this class because it was so bad. you have to read so many texts and are tested on the most absurd things. practically everyone failed the 1st midterm because it was so unfair, even the students who participated extensively and took a lot of notes did poorly. She seems like a nice person, but I won't take another class with her.
Took this course as an elective and regretted my whole life. This course about women studies but she makes u read books and articles for English literature which could be heavy for many students. I have failed my first midterm and got a very low grade on my second. I ended up studying for this course more than my major courses and still did bad.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PROFESSOR DAVISON
Very heavily bases topics and lectures on the readings, so be ready for that. Does have interesting readings though, and she does care about students and wants to work with you.
Great professor, cares about her students and wants to see everyone succeed. Projects are fairly simple and straightforward, often consisting of applying and comparing topics of literature to eachother or other aspects of life. If you do enough of the readings you shouldn't struggle at all. She's incredibly passionate and friendly as well.
horrible prof. turned a womens studies class into a literature class, made us buy and read 3 long novels plus several online readings. everyone did so bad on the midterm she recommended us to drop the class. also no powerpoints or anything to follow along on during her lectures, just sits there and talks for an hour and a half.
I dropped this class because i thought this class was a women studies class, waste of my time taking this class because of how much she talks and did not really get to any points, WAY too many notes for a women studies class, and so many notes for an alternative class I did not need. She had no powerpoint as well unnecessary.
Dr. Davison is a fantastic professor. She is passionate about the material & her relationships with students. I will keep this short; the readings are enriching, & longer works (articles) are summarized on D2L. Assessments range (papers, tests, etc.) & marks are generous, at times adjusted. Her lectures have brought me to both laughter and tears!
dr davison is the kindest, most student-oriented prof i've had. she will give you multiple chances to do assignments with no penalty simply because she wants to see you do well. her courses are reading heavy at times, but no more than any other course would be, and you will need to go to lectures, but if you put the work in, you'll do well
Dr. Davison is an awesome lecturer, and very kind. However, her exams are a nightmare. You'd expect a literature class to test predominantly via writing, but she tests for the most pedantic, minut details in an MC format. I wvd out of the class for the sake of my GPA. However, if you like to be challenged in your class, she is an awesome lecturer.
Reading heavy (two books & abt 20 readings), no powerpoints just her talking at the front, testing on very small details you wouldn't think to study, & nothing posted (test dates, class info... wants you in class). Overall, a barely doable course; this class was EXTREMELY heavy and hard to balance with four others, including core classes.
