DC is my facebook friend and a hilarious lady, she doesn't teach you that thoroughly, but you learn enough to make it worthwhile. She's pretty easy if you can teach yourself out of the book.
absolute joke... never went to class and she gives a ton of extra credit
Easy A, attendance was not mandatory or necessary if you just teach yourself out of the book. Tests were pretty easy, multiple choice, you just have to know the basics.
Easy A! Probably the easiest teacher, only have to read the textbook. Her courses are not very helpful though.
EASY! But you have to teach yourself!
Attendance is a joke but kids think they can totally blow this class off and then wind up dropping.. You kind of do need to study for tests! Definitely not hard, but not a high school gym class either.
She is so nice and not afraid to answer any questions. Tons of extra credit! Easy A. Gives practice tests and some questions reappear on the actual test. Definitely a must take!
This was a very helpful class
Cheery professor. I did not attend class after the first exam. Easy A, but you must study. All notes were posted on BlackBoard and I learned more by reading the textbook than by going to class. 2 midterms and a final--bizarre test policy though where she drops the lowest midterm. Aplia is survivable b/c she posts very close practice questions.
This is an easy class. Unless you already know micro, you need to either go to class, or read your book to do well on tests. There are no trick questions, and she is very straight forward with her questions. Class is boring, but not mandatory.
Easy, just study your text and do aplia HW's.
She is an incredibly nice teacher, but you HAVE to study a lot outside of class if you don't attend lectures regularly. If you go to every lecture and do the hw, it should be an easy A.
Dickson-Carr is fairly easy, but most students study outside of class. It works for most people (including me). If you do need help though, she's there and she's helpful. Coming to class sometimes is beneficial. Aplia (online hw) assignments are kinda annoying. Overall easiest econ teacher- take her.
Super easy just study for tests from power points
Easiest professor I have ever taken. She is decently helpful and clear. She gives a lot of extra credit and attendance is not necessary for passing (but it certainly helps). I received a much lower grade than I should have because I really slacked off but she really is very easy.
This class is extremely easy as long as you study for the exams. She doesn't do a great job teaching the material so be prepared to learn some on your own. Attendance isn't mandatory. She helps you a lot with the material on the exam and gives you plenty of study guides. Class wasn't enjoyable but would take again because its so easy.
You have to do all of your studying outside of class. She flips through powerpoints the whole class and rambles to herself often which isn't helpful. Went into office hours for help, she wasn't helpful. If you read each chapter on your own you'll pass. She gives an outline of what to study before each exam.
Super easy Econ teacher! Halfway through the semester I realized that if I only went to class on the week leading up to a test I could still receive an A. She doesn't take role, and in class she just goes over a power point which she then posts online. Good luck getting into her. Her class fills up quick.
Easy class, but horrible professor. I did not learn one thing from her. Attendance is optional so maybe 15 or 20 showed to a 100 person class every time because her lectures were pointless. Our Econ department is just awful. Get the textbook to learn it yourself.
Easy class. Makes your best test worth 60-70% of your grade. Attendance is not mandatory and not really necessary. Just make sure you do all of the work on your own time and don't slack off.
She is funny and does a great job of being straightforward on how to do the homework and what will be on the tests, however if you do get confused (which you shouldn't) she isn't the best at further explaining. Otherwise, easy class. You have 2 test and a final, and she drops one of the two test and weighs the final depending on how it affects you.
2 tests..... that's what it comes down to. One wrong turn.... and your grade is done for.
She isn't the best teacher as far as getting her students to learn a concept in depth, but if you want an easy A in a class with optional attendance, she's a good option. I mostly learned the material from her powerpoints(which she sends us). She offers a lot of extra credit, and drops the lowest test grade, so its pretty hard not to do well.
Literally so easy. I made a 100 on both tests. Online homework was a completion grade. Gave a take home final (this was probably a one time thing though). Attendance is not mandatory and she puts the powerpoints that she lectures straight from online. Easy A. Not the best if you're looking to really learn and retain the material though.
I took DC for both micro and macroeconomics and she's absolutely awesome. If you're a business student and are looking for a good grade to get into Cox, she's your professor. She posts everything you need online so you don't have to go to lecture but they're definitely very helpful. Her tests aren't bad at all either if you study. Easy A!!
I took her for both microeconomics and macroeconomics. She doesn't seem particularly inspired and doesn't dive much beyond the material in the PowerPoints, which are accessible outside of class. I think that one would gain a deeper understanding of the subject with another professor, though I was able to get an A here with little time commitment.
Prof DC's lectures are very scattered brained and often goes on tangents while teaching, usually they are funny. Gives 2 exams and a final, she rewards improvement so your better exam counts for both exams and if your final is the highest grade it counts for about 70% of your grade. Didn't learn much, and had to teach myself but got the A easily.
She's really nice and doesn't care if you come to class. Your grade is essentially decided by one test and the final.
If effort is expended, an A is attainable. Attending class essentially counts toward extra credit on your homework grade, so go to class even if you don't want to. Take the old tests she posts three or four times in preparation for the actual tests. Reading the text book is also helpful. She drops the lowest non-final test score.
Pretty easy compared to the other econ teachers. She nice but not really a great lecturer. As long as you can learn from the book you'll be good
She is great. If you have a chance take her.
Professor D-C is one of the most understanding professors Ive had thus far. Drops lowest test grade at the end of the semester which helps tremendously. Attending her lectures isnt extremely vital, but it does more good than harm. Definitely an easy A as long as you complete all your work in a timely manor. A bit scatter brained but hilarious.
I signed up for one of her classes again, she is super nice and gets to the point. Its lecture heavy but she makes them interesting. Not mandatory to attend but its helpful. She is super sweet and tries to make sure everyone understands, and always available for help over email or office hours. If you listen and get help when needed you'll pass.
Provides extra credit opportunities throughout lectures. Only two tests & a final (& you can drop one test!). Homework questions throughout semester help grade. All notes / homework are online. Textbook is provided for extra study help. She's willing to help you if you reach out. Study hard, take notes, & reach out & you will do well. Great prof!
She's a super great prof. Take her if you can. The lectures can be boring and while attendance isn't mandatory, there is an attendance quiz that will count as extra credit. It won't seem like you need the book, but get it, it makes the tests so much easier. The tests aren't hard as long as you pay attention and read the book. Seriously, take her.
log into tophat with access code for attendance and easy participation questions, hw answers were all a for 7/10 HW's. tests were relatively easy, provides practice tests for both exams and the final. drops the lower of the 2 regular test scores so your grade is really just your highest test and final, final is EASY. 75% practice test questions.
so easy, if you show up to class she does assignments step by step for you. I made a 100 on everything. take this for an easy additional credit hour. also, she's just a cool professor and i like her as a person.
Easiest Micro and Macro Teacher by far. If you want an A with the smallest amount of work, take her. Posts all slides online. Extra credit for JUST COMING TO CLASS. Classes were deserted by November. She solely read off the slides and what she taught was very surface level. Would take again for the easiness, not for the learning.
I don't understand how anyone can fail this class unless they just don't care to try. She says day 1 she doesn't care if you come to class, and makes her lectures streamable from your bed. She gives great test reviews and LOTS of extra credit. DC is truly caring and passionate about what she does. Absolutely love her!
Depends what you want... had basically a 100, never showed up to class, and studied a day or two before each test. It was an easy A, but I learned practically nothing. Even when I went to class it seemed like a waste of time because she only read off of slides that she then posted online. Nice lady, but don't take if you're looking to learn a lot.
Do not take this class if you want to understand economics or be able to use what you learn in the future. Her tests are easy. Her lectures are hard to understand and follow that's why no one pays attention or shows up. It's not even worth coming to class, just take your class time to teach yourself.
I'm someone who just struggles with economics. Attendance not mandatory at all. I always went to class but still ended up teaching myself the material. She's very nice, everything posted on canvas. Drops your lowest test grad. Great teacher if you need the class for credit/fulfill a requirement. If you're really trying to learn, you won't.
Doesn't care about attendance, drops your lowest test score, weights things differently to help you do the best you can, every test and homework question is online... Absolute legend take her if you want an A, its impossible to fail this class
Very kind lady but very boring as well. Easy A if you're looking to take for credit, but you won't learn anything. Plenty of better options if you're actually looking to grasp key economic concepts.
Please ignore the negative reviews on here. It may change because I took her virtually, but her tests were open note and extra credit for simply GOING to class and much more. Sure, I really don't know anything about macroeconomics, but if you want a laidback class, she's the way to go!
I took this class already having experience with econ and the way Professor DC taught the class made me confused and unable to learn the material. She lectures for class so if you have a hard time understanding stuff on your own I would not recommend choosing this professor. I had to pay to be able to use a website for class in order to get a grade
Grades are mainly dictated by tests. She drops the lowest test grade and her curves are very generous. Lectures can be confusing but if you are able to take notes on the slides when studying for the exams you will have no problem in the class even if you don't attend in person class. She gives the option of watching the lectures on zoom as well.
She does not care if you come to class or not. She takes attendance on TopHat and the attendance code can be shared through a group chat you create. I never showed up once and got a B+. She is awesome because you get 3 credits and a free period if you want it, as long as you are ready for the tests you are fine. She also drops ur lowest test score.
DC is incredible, she is funny and a very easy grader. Pay attention to lectures and do top hat homework and you will pass. With tests, she allows you to have a full cheat sheet.
Professor Dickson-Carr is so sweet. This class has a lot of busy work and requires students to be organized. Definitely a great course to fulfill the Writing CC. Just turn in assignments on time and you will succeed.
She doesn't put effort into her lectures as they are PowerPoint notes that you spend $30 for TopHat that she reads off and posts. She gives HW, tests, and participation as grades that you could pass with just the 3 tests including the final. You have to learn everything by yourself and spend additional money on a textbook or be good at searching YT
It's a pure lecture class. If you go to class, you'll get rewarded in bonus points. Everything is done pretty rigidly, so your experience will probably be take notes-> do homework-> take notes-> test review -> test.
While I did well in her class, she is probably THE WORST professor/instructor I have ever taken in either a high school or college course. She pulls up the lectures every class and goes through them at a pace a kindergartner would understand. Her lectures add absolutely nothing to economics and you could do just as well without her speaking at you.
People who criticize her lecture style are unaware that microeconomics really is that boring. Dickson-Carr gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit and lets you have a cheat sheet for every test. She is a bit difficult to reach through email but you can always ask her questions before class. The textbook is literally the lecture material.
Professor Dickson-Carr was great! She was very easy going in our class and understood the grind of college, helping us out any way she could and posting lecture slides after class. Although the material wasn't easy, she tried her very best to help out as much as possible. 10/10 would recommend for any freshman taking microeconomics.
Professor DC cares about her students and provides many opportunities for you to do well in her class. Two exams and a final and she drops the lowest exam score. She mainly just reads off slides and doesn't provide many examples so you'll probably have to understand the content outside of class. But a good alternative to other SMU econ professors!
She mainly reads off of slides, but as long as you study through her sample tests, you will do fine. She drops the lowest test grade and offers so many extra credit opportunities. If you don't understand why you got a question wrong, she usually records a video and explains to you why an answer is correct to help you out. She's so caring!
Her exams are not that hard; several questions are worded meticulously, and others are straight from the slides. She provides a notecard for the two non-final tests and a back-and-forth one for the final. To do well on the final, I would put everything on it to play it safe. Homework is light. She does take attendance on tophat every class.
Super easy and a great way to learn the basics of Excel if you don't know them already. She records the lessons so you can do them at home and don't need to go to class. Literally walks us through them so you get 100 every time. Super sweet and funny lady!
I love Prof Dickson-Carr, took her both semesters. Lecture heavy but a pretty light class compared to the other Econ professors. Only 3 tests and she drops one of them and you get a notecard for each test. Homework for easy points and takes attendance with a code on TopHat. Cares a lot for her students. Literally best prof TAKE HER!!!
easier to get an A with her but omg, she cannot teach. reads from the slides, makes no sense, you have to teach yourself but that is true of all the econ profs, ugh
She's basically the last worst of the worst options at SMU in Econ. That's not a compliment or endorsement. Easier but boring and she reads to you like a kindergarten teacher.
Do not take her.
All she does is read slides to you. We are not exaggerating. Every. Slide. Read. To. You. Do not take this mess.
I only didn't give her a 1 because she does make it very hard for you to have a bad grade. I don't personally love her teaching style, because she literally just reads very basic slides to you. I don't think I actually learned anything, but somehow, I have a decent grade in the class, so I can't complain.
Take this class! Its easy if you do the work and she ends class early every time. I didn't stay for longer than 20 minutes. However, you have to power through her not making sense and doing a poor job of explaining and structuring the class.
I loved Professor Carol's class! She is super funny and a pretty chill professor. She likes to cancel class on Friday's. Grades: One 10-question homework assignment per chapter (easy, answers are online), and 3 exams (including the final). The exams are not too bad, and she offers extra credit too! Extra Credit: Complete attendance polls in class.
Took this mf last semester but wanted to spin back on this, yes I got an A+ bc I'm not a veggie and I skipped class. Everything in the bad reviews are true. I rather go back to the ranch with SAE pledge masters than sit through this class again. Easy A+ if you have a pulse but she could he replaced by AI easy.
i wouldve never thought id spent my parents money so badly as i did by taking her class. dont get me wrong, shes very sweet, but i didnt learn one single thing. i am a 4.0 student and could simply not grasp one thing from her lessons. if u want the easiest A without learning a single thing, take her, but if u care ab ur learning and sanity, dont.
This is such a waste of time it's not even funny. There is no teaching in her part, I don't even think she knows the subject matter in any way, and while everyone gets a's, we don't even know what we learned. This is an embarrassment to the university and SMU. Both she and her spouse need to retire form my experience. Useless and overpaid.
Cancels class constantly, ends early on days she doesn't cancel, does nothing but read from slides and even that never makes sense. How do these people get these jobs? I'm mean I'm not complaining but it looks bad when people already think Econ are business rejects.
Class is ok. Homework every couple of weeks, one mandatory exam, one group project, final is optional. Lectures are basic and the slides are all available for you online. Two papers for econ (dont know why) but other than that its not too bad.
Can't teach, reads off powerpoints, seems useless
Quite possibly the worst university professor I have had the displeasure of learning from. Incredibly lazy and doesnt' do anything do teach, can't be bothered to know the material she is holding us accountable to, easier than the other options, horrible to get through.
This class is the biggest waste of time yet easiest class offered at SMU. If you want a free A and the writing credit, take it. if you actually care about taking classes and learning stay away as it is the most boring and unproductive waste of time I have ever taken part of.
Prof DC is the absolute GOAT of SMU professors. Very unhinged (in a good way) and has an insane amount of lore you will get to hear. Class is cancelled when necessary. Some people say that you "don't learn anything" but I have learned a lot. Specifically for Macro, there is only so much that can be taught within the curriculum and she does great.
She lacks a lot of emotional intelligence, and seems to not be able to read into social awareness. The class is easy, but her instructions are contradicting and seem to never really align with the projects.
This is the most clueless teacher i have ever met, she has no idea what she is doing and neither will you and your grade will suffer
Everything bad that people say is true. All she does is read off slides with barley any inflection in her voice. You just can't be motivated to pay attention to her at all. It's an easy A but I never had any class be a bigger waste of my time. Attendance by 3/4ths of the semester was down to 10 people. AI could do a better job at teaching me.
Please listen to below. Clueless woman I have no idea how she got a job, READS word-for-word from slides that I'm not even sure she understands, never had my time more wasted. Would waterboard myself before listening to these lectures again.
Best college class ever. She is the nicest professor who would stick up for all of her students. I do not know how she does not have a better rating you will have a guaranteed A in this class which most people in other econ classes fail. I wish I took her for macro and micro.
Not even a real professor, doesn't have a PhD, is only here bc her husband is a professor, meanwhile they stuck her w ECON and she doesn't even have a degree in it. We shouldn't have to pay for this. She also doesn't seem to want to teach as she is never prepared and cancels/ends class early ALL THE TIME, waste of our money
Absolute waste of money. She showed up late almost every single day and swears she's the busiest person on Earth. It's an easy A but I took nothing away from the class. The lectures are awful. I am going to list things I would rather do than take her again: chop off both my pinkies, waterboard myself, stare at a solar eclipse. Never again.
