Talks a lot, but otherwise a great professor. :)
Take notes, study them. No need to buy text, even.
Class was a joke, everything was straight from the notes. Easy class, don't buy the book, i didn't
No need for the text, however, she lets you buy a cheap old edition instead of the expensive new one.
the best teacher period. She makes sure almost everone in the class receives an A regardless of your exams scores.
Great teacher!

Great teacher. Straight to the point. Gives study questions/answers and possible essay questions the class before exams. Couldn't ask for anyone better.
Cool teacher, just very hard tests. She is super straight to the point, tests are exact replica of notes. Just alot to learn and understand. No homework in class, there is just 4 tests which determine your final grade. Average of 4 tests = final grade
her tests were hard...but she was cool
HARD TEACHER 4 tests = grade
took this class to get the Easy A and found out it was HARD!
She's a great professor, I found her lectures to be quick paced, but still very comprehensive. The lectures are a lot less confusing than reading the book, the the point where I wouldn't recommend buying the book, seriously. The class is of medium difficulty. The only grade is 4 tests, you MUST study for them & show up, then you'll do fine.
i took took hogan Macro Econ in the summer '06 and the test are the notes, you don't need the book, and she curves grades to help the students. she actaually wants students to succeed so she is very helpful, she won't throw u a curve ball she is nice but her lectures are REALLY boring, get a good night's rest the night before or u will fall asleep
I took her class in summer 06. She was very clear and her format was to the point. The text was not needed as she gives all the information necessary for the tests during the class. As long as you take notes, you will have all of the information necessary for the exams.
took this class to get the Easy A and found out it was HARD!
This class is not exactly a difficult one and she helps make it easier. Study review questions (given to you class before test) and the notes and you'll do just fine. She is willing to stay after class to help out students even in the summer. For those complaining about the 4 tests=grade get over it you're in college now!
Great professor- lectures were interesting & well-organized, and grading was fair. If you're taking an econ class, I'd definitely recommend taking it w/Prof. Hogan if possible. Helpful study guide questions were provided for exam review, and final grades were based entirely on 4 exams.
don't need the book just the lecture notes
OMG! Most boring prof ever! I fell asleep so many times. She just talks and talks and talks about every little detail that has to do with ECON! Grade is based on only 4 tests, and you have no other chance of getting points. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best professor ever!!! Review questions=tests. An amazing professor, take her class if you can
She is a very good professor. Her notes are very straight forward, study those and u will do fine. Dont buy the book...
GREAT prof! Really cares about her students. Very helpful! Tests are fair. She gives you an amazing study guide and sample questions. Just study the review and you'll do fine. Book not necessary, but a little helpful. I'd LOVE to take Hogan again!
I got a 4.0 in this class. All you have to do is attend your classes, buy the book just in case your not good note taker and prepare for the review questions...thats is. it really doest get any better! 4 exams and no ****!
Down to earth, understanding, and very helpful;could be my third mom.She allows older textbook editions and provides additional practice problems if you need them.Realistic approach to econ, you'll later listen to the news (ex. Marketplace on NPR) and know what's going on.If you use her methods, she also primes you for basic accounting concepts.
Professor is nice, but lectures tend to be extremely boring. She says that you can buy later editions of the book, but I think it would have been easier to follow along in the current edition that she used.
I have nothing against her. She's nice and all. However, she's not a great professor. Not helpful in the least. I came to her with a failed test, told her i did everything she asked and noted her word for word in lectures and what could i do to pass the next one? she told me to do what i've been doing. ok.right. since that worked so well last time.
This professor should star in The Wizard of Oz 2010 as the wicked witch!
easiest class i ever took, my average was a 97%, only four exams, and before each exam theres a study day and a study guide she puts on ctools. show up in class, take notes, answer the study guide questionds and youll get an A for sure.
The best economics teacher i have had yet. I do not understand the bad reviews. If you go to class every day, pay attention, the material sinks in. She is very straightforward on whats on the test, she has a very down to earth, no-nonsense way of teaching. If you cannot do well with this teacher, hang it up.
She's awesome! DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. No really do not. She gives you EVERY question that's on the test to help you review. Down to earth & very straight forward. Doesn't try to trick students with stupid questions. Not ambiguous or convoluted in any way. Very approachable. Easy A.
Econ 201 with Hogan is by far the best class I've run into at UMD thus far. She is very clear and isn't there to show off her smarts like most other professors. She has an awesome dry sense of humor and is able to make that hour and 15 minutes enjoyable. She will teach you material you can actually go home and use. Highly recommended!!!
her exams are long and complicated- no extra credit
The class is hard!!! However, this prof is the nicest most down to earth in the whole school. Always willing to help.
Has a set of review questions. Answer those questions one by one and you will ace her test. no need for the textbook, even if you do buy she advises you purchase older additions. Very helpful & grade is based on 4 tests no final exam. Great teacher has a sense of humor also
Great teacher! Class was easy. Just take notes and do the review quesitons and you'll get an A.
Macro is a big brainwashing session and I didn't walk out of this class any smarter than when I walked in. Prof. Hogan is a cool lady though.
Very nice person..easy class...dont buy the textbook..she gives you all the questions that are on the test before the test..attend class do the review questions and it should be an easy A Dont buy the book it is a waste of money. She assigns 2 short papers(2pages) really easy
She is a very nice woman. Has a lot of corny but good natured economist jokes. Her tests are pretty easy, except for the fact that some multiple choice questions are weirdly worded. But other than that, no complaints. Very nice. Willing to give advice outside of class topics, if you are looking for job advice.
You must attend class. Her class is not easy but fair with the proper of amount of studying you can achieve an A. Straightforward, intelligent & pls do not think about cheating in her class - she cleared half the room out this semester. Hoping for an A!!
Overall, the class was average. You need to actually study before the test and take good notes even if she gives you review questions before the test. She is a very nice professor. The tests are 25 mc and two short answers. She is a little strict on the short answers but again, you should do fine if you know the material and go to class.
I love how her class is set up 4 exams that are not difficult. All you have to do is do the study questions and you will do good on the test. Had her for a 6-9 class and I only went on test days. I ended up with B, probably could of gotten a higher grade if I went to class and took notes.
Willing to help all of her students. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does pay attention. Compares things to the real world and makes class interesting. I was struggling, talked to her and she was willing to help me 110%. I'd recommend her to anybody. She is difficult, but if you study you'll be fine!
Great teacher, make sure you do the review questions the day before the exam and you will get a good grade.
Explains things VERY clearly. Do the review questions and you will get an A in this class. I also went to her office hours frequently for additional help and she answered all of my questions. You do not need the book if you already have a grasp on basic supply and demand principles. She is also super nice with a dry sense of humor that I enjoyed.
Do the review questions, and you will be fine. I suggest coming to class and completing them along with her lecture. She is very enthusiastic about her subject which makes it very easy to come to class everyday. AWESOME!!!
Great professor and very nice :) Gives a study guide for everything the first day of class, talks to us nicely, is funny, and makes class worthwhile without the headache. No homework. Just pay attention and you'll do good with the reviews too.
SHE IS SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR. She explains everything really well and uses real life examples. Her exams are difficult if you don't study BUT HER STUDY GUIDES LITERALLY HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION ON THEM. Multiple choice and then choose 2 out of 3 short answer questions. She's really funny and kept my attention even though econ is generally boring
GO TO CLASS. If you miss just 1 lecture, its hard to understand the material. TAKE DETAILED NOTES! Only 4 exams & no other assignments, which can be bad if you don't do well on 1 exam. So, make sure you do the REVIEW QUESTIONS, GO TO CLASS, & STUDY for the exams. Hogan is great, taking her again for the winter semester. Final NOT CUMULATIVE. Had A-
I love this lady! She is so sweet and down-to-earth! I took her for both ECON 201 & 202 and I wish she could teach all of my classes! She makes everything so clear and easy to understand. I literally cannot say enough nice things about her. If you have to take ECON, take it with her-you won't be sorry!
Overall great professor! Her lectures are understandable and clear. You do not have to show up to class but I would recommend you do because her lectures help with the review questions and the tests are based off the review questions. No extra credit, no homework. 4 exams simple if you study and pay attention in class!
If you actually go to class, take notes and pay attention to her you will do well. Make sure you understand everything she says because concepts build... A Lot! If you can fully understand all her review problems before exams you will do well. Shes nice / has funny stories. She talks nonstop the entire class though so theres no downtime whatsoever.
Amazing professor! I struggled, I mean struggled through Econ 201 with another professor and was extremely nervous about taking 202. But, she does a great job explaining what you need to know and what you don't. She also gives you review and sample questions before the exam which are VERY helpful! Hope this helps!
If you have to take econ, take it with Hogan! The class is basically made up of four tests and she does her best to make sure you understand the material. It also helps that she has a good sense of humor.
Very clear and organized. Her syllabus has a schedule and she sticks to it. She make sure that she teaches everything on her study guides. Definitely take notes. Lectures are straight forward, she stays focused and relays the information well. Projects are easy, test are easy if you have the notes. You'll only need the textbook for the study guides
She is extremely nice and an easy grader. Very generous with points. Wants students to succeed. If you pay attention in class, take notes, and don't skip, you will do fine. Her lectures are good but she tries to be funny which is kind of annoying, but she explains the material very well. Would take again
Great at explaining the main topics and what is going to be on the tests (only four throughout the semester). Have to do good on the tests for a good grade because your grade is based only on the tests, no extra assignments. A lot of list to memorize throughout the semester, but tests and final are not cumulative. Study and you will do fine .
If you care about your grade, don't take this professor. She's a fair grader but her tests are absolutely terrible. 4 tests, nothing else. Mess up on one and your grade is gone. If you're fine with having a BB- then go right ahead and take her. Definitely not a teacher that's easy to get an A with. Also, barely used the book. Don't buy.
DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS IF YOU STRUGGLED WITH ECON 201! I worked so hard in the class and did terrible...I am usually an A student and got a D- in her class!!!!
She's nice and will tell you all you need to know for tests. The tests pretty much require you to memorize multiple long lists of information. They don't seem to be on actually using the material, mostly memorizing.
Hogan is great. She has very clear expectations- 4 non-cumulative tests. Her review questions prepare you for the test. She is very helpful if you have questions. She doesn't have mandatory attendance. Overall, if you are decent at econ you should get an A.
This lady is the most sassiest woman I have ever met. She does not tolerate anyone's BS. She is clear on her tests and she breaks it down into lists. Be prepared to memorize a lot. Otherwise than that, she's a hot potato but cool as a sea cucumber. :)
Shes a nice professor but you really need to work for your grade. Her notes are essential in passing the 4 exams. No extra credit but curves at the ending depending on improvement. No assignments or quizzes just 4 exams. But it is possible to get an A in the course. Would take her again.
Amazing professor! Really cares about your grade and rounds your grade. I went from a B- to an A- at the end of the semester because I always asked her for help and went to office hours. She gives you a study guide at the beginning of the semester which is basically everything on the 4 exams. She literally spoon feeds you. Avoid Sobiechowski!!!!
Being a non-Econ major, I found her class to be really hard! I think she's a good professor, but there is A LOT of memorization! I didn't do well in the course and I felt intimidated by her.
Quuaaantity Demaaanded! Hogan is great, you will learn from her lectures though they can get boring and seem to drag on. Its Econ, get used to it. Study well for the exams and you should do good. No nonsense clear cut type of person, if you study the material and ask engaging questions she is easy to get along with.
Amazing professor! Can not recommend enough. I am an Engineer and not a person fan of Econ but I walked away learning a lot of (actually) interesting things. No hw, only 4 tests make up your grade. Do her 80ish practice problems per test with a friend and you'll ace it. She keeps the class light and interesting and is very willing to help.
Don't ever take her. Unless you live to cram for tests and LOVE to memorize long lists and facts then she is for you. If you're normal don't take her. She's boring to listen to in lecture and the class is solely based off of memorization, not how well do you understand this like it should be. Take someone else.
She was fair and reasonable. Only 4 tests... if you screw up one, there goes your A. She kinda tests your memorization skills than anything. DONT DO THE MISTAKE OF TAKING HER CLASS LIGHTLY IN THE START. The first test felt like a blow off, but the second test made me work... and I studied more for the second one. Just memorize and ud be good
Great professor, wants all students to succeed and pass. Uses the old version of the book to save you money. Makes worksheets to do in class and gives a study guide which if done will result in an easy A. Show up, take notes, and do the reviews you'll pass. Makes Econ an easy and painless class for all. Highly recommended.
Shes super nice and some what bubbly with corny jokes that you'll find yourself giggling at. Like one of the other reviews, theres 4 exams including the final and no homework, no quizzes. She gives lengthy study guides DO THESE AND YOU WILL DO GOOD or dont and drop the class cause you messed up on the exams. (me)Dont be me. Study and you will pass.
Really straight forward class and she is a good lecturer. Although she curves students grades upwards, you cannot do bad on one exam. The class is composed of 4 exams, fail one, and there goes your grade. No extra credit is offered either.
Horrible experience that I hope not to go through again. The class was extremely boring all she did was talk as if she had them memorized. So if you think your going to be understanding the material and be tested on what you understood this is not for you. It's all about memorizing
While she is nice and tells some jokes the class is pretty boring. 4 exams and nothing else. Be prepared to memorize a lot of small details about topics that were skimmed over in class. As a straight-A student who aced ECON201, this was by far my most difficult and unforgiving class. Avoid if possible, unless you can remember every little detail.
This professor is a good lecturer, but like others have mentioned, she's tough. Unless you have memory like an elephant and can remember every little detail in lecture. Her exams are literally from her review questions, each exam is comprised of roughly anywhere from 75-100 review questions and some review questions consists of 3-4 within each one
Just study all the notes she gives you in class and you'll be good. She doesn't want to trick anyone, she just wants to make sure you understand the material. Overall she is very nice, and will help you if you put in the effort.
No work assigned other than 4 exams. She gives review questions way before hand but there are A LOT of things to memorize. Attendance isnt graded but youll miss a lot of info if you miss just one class. Im usually a straight A student but this has been by far the most stressful class i have ever taken. avoid at all costs.
Professor Hogan is a straight forward teacher. Pay close attention during lecture and take notes about everything because your notes will help you answer all her review questions. Her review questions are what she uses to make her tests so attend lecture! Only flaw about this class is that if you mess up on one exam its hard to get to a solid A
You have to memorize, in fine detail, every single bit of the lectures. 100% of the lectures are on the test (About 15-20 Microsoft Word pages worth per test plus graphs and the book). If you miss a small part of a multipart question, you are heavily penalized. This includes memorizing/replicating full graphs and their keys. Rediculus.
Whenever she used examples, she went in to much detail and sometimes she used to literally yell at the students to express her feelings about how some of the decisions politicians have made and are still making. The course is based only on TESTS (4) which makes the students' life very hard when it comes to maintaining their grades.
Prof. Hogan wants students to succeed and makes her lectures as interesting as she possibly can (even though econ is a drag.) Class is graded on four tests so make sure you don't bomb one. She gives review questions that you can follow during class and she gives the answers to them but you have to pay attention to lecture. Study and you'll do fine.
Took her b/c of the high scores but almost instantly regretted it. Class was easy but time consuming. She uses her review questions to make her exams and she gives you the answers to all of the review questions. However, if you miss something, it's hard to find the answer elsewhere. Book is useless. Show up to class and take good notes.
PROS: *Tests are based off the study guide *Her lectures are very clear and concise *She is very accessible outside of class *No real need to buy the book CONS: *Class is based on 4 exams CONCLUSION: *The class is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. Make sure to visit during her office hours and ask plenty of questions in class.
Only gives 4 exams to determine your grade.
Prof Hogan is very straightforward and organized. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, if you miss class you'll miss information that you can't really find anywhere else. She goes fast, but she explains things well. She gives a study guide at the beginning of the semester and sticks to it. There are four exams and four quizzes (noncumulative).
Professor has amazing lectures, but make sure you write everything she says because that is the easiest source for answers to the review questions. Her exams are 100% based off the review questions. So, go to class, review the 60 review questions, and you will be good. Very helpful during office hours as well
My favorite professor. 201 includes online quizzes. If the class does well, she'll cut of subtopics from the in-class exam. Reviews are straightforward and tell you what you can and will see on the exam. Write what's on the board and pay attention in class. Do this then you'll be able to do well.
Professor Hogan's entire class is based off 4 exams, and they're hard exams. So if you do bad on one kiss your grade goodbye. She also basically forces you to buy the book adding in reading questions about a story in the book. The exams are just based off memorization.
She can be repetitive, but overall is very clear with her expectations. Class is graded on 4 in class exams and 4 online tests. Her wording is picky but you must understand it for the tests. Very nice professor!
If you suck at exams don't take this teacher. only 4 exams and 4 quizzes. you mess up on one you're screwed
Very nice and caring, but not too lenient. Is very clear when it comes to policies and making up quizzes/exams/et cetera. She does a decent job of conveying the material across and actually explains the reasoning. Would definitely recommend.
This class is the worst and hardest class ive ever taken. theres only 4 exams and 4 quizzes for grades which is very unfair. not to mention the exams are very hard and you will have to memorize literally every single word from the lesson which is kinda impossible. the quizzes are times with only 15 minutes. 15 mins for 10 questions like really?
The course consists of 4 exams and 4 online quizzes. The entire class is lecture based but she explains the information very well. If you follow along and take detailed notes you'll easily pass. You will need to put in some effort studying but she is really organized and gives review that is exactly like the test. Plus, she's super nice and caring!
Professor Hogans class was straight forward. Her expectations are clear-cut. If you take good notes during lecture and put some effort into studying for the exams, youll do well.
Her class is very straight forward & she teaches very very well. Only downside is she sometimes talks a little too much making her class pretty boring & grades are fully based on test/quizzes. Tests arent that bad cause she gives you questions to study from ahead of time. I study a day before and got an A on every exam. You won't regret taking her.
Super Easy. Take notes on the Review Questions while watching the lectures and you have all the answers. Never started studying before the day before, and got an A. The class is divided into 4 modules each worth 25% of the grade. Modules have 1 Quiz and 1 Exam. Quizzes and Exams are multiple choice and exams have an untimed written portion.
She's a great lecturer, and her tests/quizzes are based entirely on the lecture. Not sure how it would be in in-class classes, but for online students all you need to do is watch the lectures and take notes on the specific set of review questions she gives you. 4 exams and 4 quizzes
Carol is an amazing professor and is very knowledgeable in this field! She is very sweet and accessible outside of the classroom. It is crucial to show up for class! Her tests are strictly based on the review questions... (example: I was able to pass each test by just reviewing my detailed lecture notes and occasionally viewing the actual textbook)
As long as you attend the lectures, you're fine. Take notes using her review questions as that's all you'll need to do good in the class. ALWAYS do the independent reading because it always shows up on the exam, so if you know the material it's pretty much free points!!
she knows what she is doing. It's just that she is picky
Shes is very knowledgable. Other than that do review questions, sample multiple choice, and practice graphing the graphs before tests (cus she tough grader on free response prt on test). The typa class where canvas and keeping track of things will get you a good grade.
Awsome!
If you're not willing to attend EVERY single class and write down everything she says you will not pass. She doesn't use the textbook so there's no going backing unless you use ur notes. Her class is based on 400 points (4 exams and 4 online quizzes for a total of 4 units). She is a nice lady though and seems to know a lot.
A very good professor who explains the contents of the course so well. I really enjoyed learning macroeconomics despite coming from a different major. She provides review questions for each unit which is super super helpful for the exams, so just make sure the complete them and study them before the exams.
If you can take this course with another professor I highly recommend you do so. This course was test-heavy, and there were no other assignments to help your grade. The lectures were boring and confusing.
Professor Hogan teaches 201 really well and I found the class to be not super difficult as long as you attend almost all the lectures and write down everything she says and talks about because it's gonna help you answer all the questions on her assessments. My only complaint with her is she doesn't provide extra credit for anything.
I took this class with her because she had good reviews but that was a terrible mistake. This class is very test heavy your graded on 4 tests and 4 quizzes, mess up on anything and your grade is done for. Doesn't post anything on canvas. you have to show up to all the lectures and take notes or else you won't pass. can't miss a single lecture.
Lectures were useful in understanding the material, make sure to pay attention to them and attend as basically everything you need to know for quizzes and exams are from her lectures and review questions. Grade is based on four online quizzes and four online exams (final is NOT cumulative). She's very understanding, however make sure to show up!
She words her exams/quizzes in very strange ways and makes it extremely easy to get a question wrong although you know the answer, but it was worded weirdly.
barley teaches good, i failed my exams cuz she could not teach like bro i wish i dropped her class she is also very very snarky she said it her self
Terrible instructor when it comes to her making a class that only has 4 quizzes and 4 exams with no homework assignments, and her way of wording the quizzes and exams. She doesn't curve grades if low like others falsely said. If you're taking an introduction class to get in business careers or just for credit - I highly DO NOT recommend taking her.
The only way to fail is to not pay attention Almost all info is via lectures with provided questions. Same q's are on quizzes/exams She asks if all understand before continuing Open note quiz 1 wk before each exam 4 exams total, non-cumulative Textbook seldom used. Can find online, & she leaves a personal copy on table Avail via email & after class
I really did not appreciate her giving me an unsatisfactory on my transcript. She was a very poor professor and I had to drop the class after the deadline. Very poor. I have never cheated or done anything wrong except sign up for a class with this terrible prof! Thumbs down! I got an A with a different prof!
Prof Hogan's ECON201 is a tough but rewarding class. Attend every lecture, take detailed notes, and utilize resources like Unstuck ai to ace the exams. Her teaching style takes some getting used to, but the content is valuable.
she is very informative but it is confusing to follow along in her class with the provided review questions, and in person exams have written portions with many questions. if you have a bad memory i wouldn't recommend it. there are online quizzes and in person ones. she knows a lot about econ which is good, but i wouldve taken a different professor
I took Professor Hogan for both Econ 201 and 202, and she was amazing. It might sound intimidating that the class is graded only through four tests and four quizzes, but if you attend lectures and take good notes, you'll be fine. Her office hours are also very helpful—I recommend taking advantage of them. I highly recommend her!
It was my very first semester in college and first test in her class. I have dyslexia so sometimes I misread questions. I don't recall the question but I remember her note on my answer. "You either don't pay attention in class or you're never here." She never corrected my answer. I was there everyday. She is not a good prof nor a helpful tutor.
BEWARE. I went to this professor for help and was literally told to drop the class while I still could. Lectures were 10% course material and 90% pointless rants about her opinion on the economy. If you enjoy learning absolutely nothing while being discouraged, this is the professor for you.
She's a great professor, she's just lecture heavy and you need to attend class to know the material on the exam. I used Unstuck ai and it helped a lot. You just need to focus. She's very helpful I attended her office hours just to ask questions and she would give me great feedback
I was worried based on past reviews but rmbr its a college course, make sure you attend every single lecture!! Use unstuck ai, take notes, and STUDY outside class. Lots of memorization. 4 units, each graded by 100 pts. I got a D on my first exam bc I didnt study and didnt take good notes. Unit 2 and 3 I got As wallah. Taking her econ 202 in winter.
For the most part Professor Hogan was fine. The bottom line is that if you show up to class and take good notes, you will be prepared for the tests. She covers everything you need to know for the exams in her lectures. That being said, her lecturing style can be a bit confusing, so make sure to pay good attention. I did not use the textbook once.
