shes awesome, gives unique examples so easy to remember... very approchable
very excited about class, but gets mad if you do not know an answer or are late
she can get moody, fun interesting lectures, loves biology, i recommend
Awesume, puts her all into making class worth while, tests based on lecture
enthusiastic, lots of fun
Damn good teacher - puts heart into it. Relates everything to sex but funny.

she makes the class fun and exciting... i really recommend this class
Very enthusiastic teacher, nerver boring, hard class though
HARD!!!practicly an actriss more than a teacher sometime, pretty good class thou
exams are hard and she talks FAST, but you can do well if u write awesome notes
Flips out if you don't shout out answers, but a great teacher
Class is fun & material is presented well, but goes too fast, hard to take notes
Kind of hard, but not a bad class. Just make sure you take good notes!
GREAT CLASS

great teacher, really enthusiastic. hard tests but theyre curved
GREAT CLASS!!!! study a lil bit everyday and you'll be fine!
Loves teaching about this stuff; used Powerpoint to lecture, make sure you study
GREAT TEACER! Very helpful to all students, just take the time to go see her.

very hard class, and was not willing to help all the time!

very harsh and unapproachable unless you are one of her pets- was nice at first-
USE her during her office hours and study sessions! Awesome teacher!!
only nice to her pets , shows much favoritism, ignores who doesnt suck up to her
Ok teacher.. really excited... Harsh& takes peronally if class does bad on test
EXTREMELY HARD!!! if u don't take superman notes, you'll be soooo screwed!!!!!!
hard class, pretty boring if you don't love biology, take awesome notes
tries to teach to everyone but just doesnt get across.
Not bad if you take A LOT of notes!!!
aight yall. hold on to whatever you feel is holy.. this class sucks and is hard
GET OUT NOW! hard, mean, not understanding, doesn't relate to students at all!
Take notes, go to study sessions, VERY easy if you were in AP in high school

lots of notes, very helpful, gets very mad easily, hard tests
She gives too many notes and the information is kinda confusing
this is an easy coure...awesome teacher that gives awesome notes
shes very enthusiastic about what shes teaching. however, notes are sometimes confusing and unorganized. tests are almost impossible no matter how hard you study. unless you like lightening note taking, choose a different professor.
My lord is she terrible. Tests are impossible, lectures are torture. I hate her. I hate her.
AWESOME teacher-clear, enthusiastic, good storyteller
tests require alot of studying, but will all come straight out of lecture, so GO TO CLASS and TAKE GOOD NOTES! she is very helpful in office hours for things you are unclear about. overall, pretty good.
She always helped whenever I went to her office hours. Lots of material, but she is such a good professor. Bio isn't easy no matter who you take...you are going to have to study!
I really enjoyed this class but did change my major because the material is soo tough. She will do anything to help you...be aware that she takes bad grades personal
soooo enthusiastic about teaching bio!! no textbook, just course pack. tests are very fair-just study the warm-ups and in-class assignments. go to class!!!
she's very enthusiastic, somewhat difficult class
Very enthusiastic, makes bio as interesting as it can be. Only tests on what she covers in lecture. Very helpful if you are willing to seek help, and tests are easy if you study your notes.
Tests are easy if you take them seriously and study the book and the notes! She is very enthusiastic, but takes sleeping in class/poor grades personally..If you do poorly, she gets mad. Go to her office hours for help too..she gets upset when people dont.
Very good at lecturing, very clear. Tests require studying, but you can get an A in the class if you go and study. She is a wonderful teacher, but slightly unaproachable.

nice women.. very enthusiastic... i studied for exams, but it was still pretty difficult... GO to LEcture!! (but its a trade off cause you don't have too much reading)
Only tests on what she says in class, so just make sure you take good notes and you'll be fine. She's really funny too so its easy to pay attention.
Great lady! Class was hard but she tries to make it interesting, very energetic, great stories to help you too!
A dedicated hard worker. Do not graduate without taking her class, she is very energetic and willing to teach.
applies boring concepts in biology to real life... class assignments and attendence are to your advantage
Great professor, has difficult tests but the mini exams really help to break down material so there's not so much to study come test day. She loves it when you come to office hours and makes it a priority to know you on an individual basis
insanely hard class. but she is a very good, funny, enthusiastic teacher. wants you to understand. going to office hours and extra study sessions definatly helps. awesome teacher, highly recommend!
VERY HARD CLASS. The tests are all fill in the blank, but she has a lot of energy and willing to work with you. Tests are all from notes, and you always need to be in class for daily graded assignments
Make sure she knows you by going to office hours. Must go to class and take LOTS of notes. Tests are extremely hard but Dr. Hurney makes lectures interesting. Take her but be ready to work
Too much notes to take and jumps around alot. Very helpful during office hours and willing to look over the test and give sum points back if appropriate. Overall very unorganized and even if u study alot it will be hard. Take Pesce if possible!!!
she is very enthusiastic about teaching. knows exactly what she is talking about, and makes a really long period go by as fast as possible. Shes a great teacher, i definately reccomend her for bio!!
excellent course
This is the teacher to take for GSCI 103. I feel like I am going to a stand up routine every time I go to class. She is funny, CLEAR, and understands that you are not a BIO major. I HATE science, but hurney makes it very possible for you to do well.
I love Biology and Hurney is really nice but all her tests are fill in the blank.
awesome teacher, enthusiastic and helpful, knows the material, very helpful in office hours- use them, tests are not too bad if you study well. take her whenever possible- she makes class fun and really helps you learn.
Take Hurney if you can! She's hilarious and knows what she's talking about. Very clear! But tests are fill in the blank. Must be able to regurgitate your notes. Go to class!!
Hard class! She isn't very helpful if you don't think on her level. Her tests are extremely hard b/c they are fill in the blank and very comprehensive.
Her tests are rediculously hard, all filling in charts and answering in depth questions. Not just in depth like a normal hard course, but rediculously in depth that no one that isn't a Bio major should ever have to know. DO NOT TAKE AS A GEN ED! She is a great teacher but the hardest I've ever had!
WORST PROFESSOR AT JMU PERIOD! Her tests are impossible, doesn't matter how much you study unless you are a Bio or Premed major. Do not take her for Gened Bio. She is terrible and won't relate to you at all. She takes it out on you that you aren't preMed. Avoid her like the plague.
entertaining teacher, seems to care about students-- your grade turns out higher than you think (i got an A without killing myself)-- i would take her again
THE teacher to take for 103. She should teach other professors how to teach a GenEd class. Really cares about her students, was great for May session... not overwhelming amount of work outside of class. Tests are not EASY but they're not hard either. If you think they're hard, that's just b/c you freak out that it's not multiple choice.
One of the smartest most interesting people I've ever met. Her class is definitely like going to see a standup comedy show. Class is challenging but totally do-able. I knew nothing about bio and i hate science but i worked real hard in the class and got an A. Definitely take her!!
very entertaining. she relates the bio topics to current events, so it makes it easier for non science majors to understand. gives in class assignments every class. no text book, all power point slides. tests can be hard, usually only 25-30 questions, but i would definitely recommend hurney
easy class as long as you go to lectures. exams arent bad and projects are easy. no regular homework assignments, occasional assignment on blackboard. she's entertaining and probably the best professor to take gci 103 with. very helpful outside of class, holds review sessions before exams.
I love her! She is so interesting and sooooo funny. She cracks me up the entire class. I am never bored...she will get u into bio because she picks really great topics. You do have to study and go to class...big shock...but the class is mangageable and u will love her!
VERY helpful professor with lots of office hours and online chats, though probably because her tests and quizzes are really difficult. asks everything she talks about in lecture so PAY ATTENTION! difficult course because of all the information and specificity but really entergetic and helpful teacher!
I would not advise taking her class if you're not a bio major. This class will own your life if you don't have a good background in biology, or else study it every day. She is probably the most helpful professor I've found, but it's because the material is so hard to keep up with. Tests are killer. If you're a bio major you would love her to death.
Don't take this professor especially if not a bio major. It is impossible to get a good grade unless you are able to know exactly what she is thinking. Quizes are impossible and unfair grading
This lab was definitely a lot harder than it needed to be. Grading was totally out of the blue on what she thought should be right that day. You are definitely talked down to in this class and within the lab manual that SHE wrote she refers to the instructor as "The Supreme Being"...which is pretty much how the class is run...go figure.
Although this is a General Biology course Hurney expected way to much out of her students. I am a business major and prepared sufficiently for her tests and still got owned. DO NOT TAKE unless absolutely necessary!
She is one of the best teachers I've had so far! You have to do a lot of work for this class, but it's all worth it. She is funny, her class is interesting, and you will learn a lot. Don't expect to get out early from lab though
Good Instrucor, she really likes bio. Most of the things you do in class are the same for every 114 section. If your a bio person I would take her. Go see her for help with lapreports that helps alot.
Enthusiastic & easy to understand. Doesnt require tons of studying, but you do need to do the reading to get a good grade. It also helps to reread the questions you answered during the labs, as youll have to know that material for the practicals. Going to office hours is very helpful, but she might ignore you for 15 mins while she talks on the phone.
very cool lady. lets the students choose what is taught. uses clickers and no textbooks. class is somewhat difficult but its not what you expect(in a good way). She is very enthusiastic and wants students to learn. great teacher.
Grading is extremely anal. You can write a whole paragraph and leave out one word and she'll mark the whole thing wrong. Her class is ridiculously hard for a freshman class and it's not fair how strictly she grades. Don't take this class unless you can show her up by knowing every piece of Biology known to mankind, cause she thinks she does.
I DO NOT recommend this class. You will spend hours and hours on lab reports and she will still find something wrong with them. She is an extremely hard grader. I feel like she thinks you are only taking this one class. She is also not approachable and easily angered. She thinks everyone taking the class is bio majors.Find another lab teacher
DO NOT take this class. She is not a very approachable person, and will make you feel stupid when you ask questions. You will spend hours on lab reports, etc. and probably not get a good grade. She seems like she could be a nice person just not a good teacher. She really thinks everyone taking the class is a BIO major. I don't recommend this class.
Dr. Hurney sincerely desires for her students to do well and succeed. However, she expects effort in return. As an honors lab, the grading weighs differently compared to non-honors sections with more emphasis on writing lab reports. Additionally, Dr. Hurney verbally quizzes an individual in front of the whole class, so go to lab prepared!
She may seem unapproachable at first, but if you put in effort, she will help you. Her lab report standards are pretty high, but she helps you edit them. She has a lot to say making this was a very interesting lab. However, come to lab PREPARED! All in all, a helpful instructor.
She starts off the semester by saying she understands that everyone in her course is taking this class for a gen ed and that she knows everyone has different majors and no one is bio. Then she grades ridiculously and has expectations as if this were a high level bio course. Do not recommend at all.
I was somewhat interested in taking this class and was hoping it would be what every gened should be not overwhelming. WRONG it's really time consuming outside of class and she grades really hard. She's super nice and enjoys the subject but she needs to remember some of her students are juniors and seniors and have more important classes!!
She's a really nice and funny teacher, but be warned. DO NOT BE VAGUE on ANY work she gives you or you will regret it BIG TIME! If you go to class everyday and do the clicker questions and class assignments you'll be set! She has those 4 tests and 3 projects, TAKE PROJECTS WITH CAUTION! You get to pick your grading criteria and ect so fun class! :)
Honestly if you are looking for a less stressful science course take this! Hurney loves to make the class entertaining and there are MULTIPLE grades to help you out in the long run, like clicker questions, warmups, and ect. She does alot of participation grades so that helps alot!4 exams&3 projects. Watch out for the projects though they are tough!
Completely structured (with the exception of the last unit, which the class was allowed to select!) course, high energy professor, simplistic assignments, no textbook. What's not to love?
Extremely time consuming class. She treats the class like an english class because all you do is spend hours on lab reports that she rips when grading... very condescending and makes you feel stupid. Avoid
She was enthusiastic but overall, she makes you feel stupid and is pretty rude. I liked her at first but then she gets angry if everyone doesn't get it, even when she explains that she understands that not everyone is a bio major. She's extremely picky with the project, and tests are a lot harder than expected. Would not recommend
I loved Dr. Hurney, best prof I've had at JMU! She is funny & enthusiastic. She gives selected readings in place of a textbook & gives warm ups, clicker questions, in class assignments, projects & tests. You manage your own grading criteria (division of points) for each unit based on what you think you do best on.
she expected you to know exactly what she wanted. she would regularly have a substitute come to class. all group work and there is a lot of work outside of class. confusing what websites she wants you to use and when and reliability statements are the biggest waste of time.
Dr. Hurney was very enthusiastic and really really loves bio, although she may be too obsessed. This semester she decided to completely change the way she taught class, all group work no lectures or exams which sounds great but it's not. Her assignment prompts are unclear and she expects you to do way to much work out of class.
AVOID if you can. She is a nice lady but gives you SO MUCH WORK. All this work takes up a lot of your time. It's tedious and useless, so much busy work, not worth it. Work in a group all class. It's confusing what she wants and it's never clear. Beware, a lot of effort required.
Dr. Hurney definitely knows her stuff, but she's very demanding and condescending. And incredibly vague. DO NOT TAKE HER. I would dread going for her three hour lab class and all she does is assign lab reports which take WEEKS to write and she just rips them apart with her edits and then gives terrible grades at the end no matter how hard you try.
Very intimidating. She constantly grills you with questions and is unclear about what she is asking. Grades lab reports very harshly after making multiple rounds of edits on the report. She will tell you to remove something from your paper and then take off points when it is not in your final draft. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. Hurney is a brilliant, amazing woman, but a very confusing hard prof. There is a lot of teaching yourself , and you should always make sure you know how to do the experiments before class bc she will ask Q's. She's not very straightforward at answering Q's, and her lab reports will KILL your grade. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP ON REPORTS
This class is straight busy work. It says lecture, but she doesn't lecture a single thing about biology. She throws you into current science and talks about reliability way more than she should, this isn't critical thinking, its BIOLOGY. You better appreciate computer graphics because this is also basically a SMAD class. I hate it.
Easily the hardest gen ed I've ever taken. I'm literally still pissed right now.
There are no tests which seemed good at first but the assignments every week take much more time. I hate that she has the assignments up but refuses to open them until a certain time, which is frustrating. She is extremely nitty picky about details and takes points off for the smallest things. I wish she talked to the groups more for improvement.
I would not recommend taking the Honors section for this class. She grades her lab reports really harshly, and the criteria she used to grade was confusing. You really have to study for the lab practicals as well as work really hard to write a good lab report. Attendance is mandatory because it is a lab.
Hurney is a funny lady. The class set up is my style. No tests and constant group projects. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HATE PEOPLE. You have a group project due every week. If you need a science credit for geneds but hate it as much as I do, take this class.
She's the worst man. Avoid at all cost. She's super picky and this class was 103. She's also very condescending and needs to be taken down a peg honestly. Also, the course load was way to much for such a low level class and she's just the worst in general. I hated her and you will too.
No tests, all homeworkprojects. The class was okay, but expect a lot of thinking and busy work and weekly group projects. She expects a lot out of you that's not necessarily related to biology, if you like creative writing and projects then this would be a good class to take. If your more forward and informational, I would stay away.
This class is all group work. There's no textbook and you read articles and answer biology questions by yourself and with your group. At the end of each week you post a blog post which has to be somewhat creative. She is very enthusiastic and wants her students to learn and remember more than the basic "the mitochondria is the powerhouse of a cell"
This entire class is all group work, so if you're not into working with other people, definitely stay away. If you hate lectures and exams, this is a good class for you. The work can be time consuming, but once you get the hang of it, each week is the same. This class does require you to be a little creative and not just look at things biologically
This class is somewhat of a gamble. If you get a good team, you're golden. If you don't, it's going to hard to make up for everyone else's slack. The way the class is set up, you have no work outside of class during the week and basically have two assignment over the weekend (one due on friday, one on sunday). Overall, I'd say go for it.
