Carol taught me one very important thing - just because someone is smart doesn't mean they can teach. She is extremely intelligent with absolutely no idea what she's doing. She forgets what she's assigned and what she's doing each day and piles on work she promises she won't. Constructive criticism is not welcome by her. Do NOT take this class!
Carol Lorenz is probably the worst teacher that I have ever had. She is bright in her field but inexplicably dumb at everything else. She can not work a computer to save her life and still tries to do things online. She changes deadlines at the last minute. and refuses to answer emails during the week. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She assigns tons of papers that MUST be justified, 1.5 spacing, and size 11 font. The papers have to be 3 pages, but with the size requirement, its more like 6. Honestly, this will be your class with the most work without a doubt. Extremely difficult, time-consuming, and boring. And she treats attendance way too seriously.
Carol Lorenz is very educated when it comes to the fine arts. Her class definetly is not easy especially if your someone who isnt interested in this kinda stuff. However she is willing to work with you, and with a little effort it is an easy class to get an A in if you stay on top of your work.
Lorenz is very energetic. She knows her stuff but when it comes to technology she needs a lot of help and gets frustrated easily and yells. If she spent as much energy organizing her class/learning how to use a computer we wouldn't have gotten behind. A good prof, not difficult, she expects you to be a responsible student, which isn't a bad thing.
This class goes the full 3 hours without a break, which makes it hard to concentrate on the lectures and power points. She enjoys sharing personal stories during class time. She means well as a teacher, and the tests are fair, however, all other assignments are time consuming and unclear.
Carol has a lot of knowledge with fine arts. She's makes everything clear when it comes to her lectures But she gives out a lot of assignments. More than any of my other class. It seems that she doesnt have any knowledge with technology. Shes also strict with attendence
Dr. Lorenz seems very knowledgable. However she is overly critical about small mistakes and ignores crucial mistakes. She also spends a large amount of time complaining about her personal life.
Doctor Lorenz is a very experience, knowledgeable woman. She goes into detail on topics, although some are not of interest.She gives a lot of writing assignments and not specified dates which can be a hassle and criticizes too openly. Her requirements for attendance can be a bit much. But overall, she's a nice woman. :)
she is a nice lady most of the time however she does seem very scatter brained and occasionally will give the same lesson 2-3 times and not even realize it. she is gives the most assignments out of all the copa teachers.
Dr. Lorenz is a nice women that is well educated in the arts. She requires attendance, and effort, but nothing that a college student shouldn't be able to handle.

She's passionate about her subject but an sometimes be a little too critical. I did learn a lot in her class. There is a lot of work required out of class, you have to go to a lot of different productions. They are fun to see but are pretty time consuming. Get that work done early and you'll feel better at the end of the semester.

Dr. Lorenz is a wonderful and insightful professor who taught what I believed would be a boring class only to enlightenment me to the joys of art and theater. She also taught me to recognize the artistic elements around me in everyday life, to appreciate them and how to even recognize and relate art into my career field. An A++ professor.
Professor Lorenz is a very friendly and energetic teacher. She loves her job!
Dr. Lorenz is a bit out there and confusing on what she is exactly teaching but as long as you attend class you pass easily
She is very intimidating at first, but once you get to know her and really talk to her she is a wonderful and understanding teacher. Very knowledgeable about the class material.
I wish I had taken this class during the day. The class i'm in is three hours long, with no break. It becomes hard to concentrate after sitting there for so long. Dr. Lorenz is very educated in what she teaches. However, it's her teaching skills that lack. She has a tendency to get flustered and is unpredictable with her due dates.
Dr. Lorenz has a mind of her own, asking students their opinions and then telling them how their opinions are incorrect. She chooses her favorites and her least favorites. This is clear to the entire class who she generally does not like. I would not recommend her as a teacher because her attitude gets in the way of learning.
She is passionate & expressive during her lectures which keeps students' attention. Her knowledge about history & arts cannot be denied. Suggestions: Quality vs. quantity-no need have class the full 90 minutes w/o a break & giving several small quizzes & assigments that are mundane given the goal of the class. Meet deadlines as promised.
very knowledgeable and expressive which makes for interesting lectures. 90 minute class could be cut short if her personal experiences were not told as "random fun facts". Required courses should not be filled with mundane quizzes and assignments to prove it should be taken seriously. Quality over quantity.
She knows what she's talking about but her style was very confusing...her paper requirements weren't bad, though. I learned a lot, but I would not take her again. Too much work and you aren't really allowed to have an opinion that doesn't mesh with hers, then you're picked on. But she is knowledgeable. Just be prepared to work hard.
this class as a night class can be a drag but she KNOWS what she is talking about. even if you don't care AT ALL about the fine arts and just have to take it as a core class she will interest you in some way about something. whether it be the musicals, operas, or dance. she's funny and overall it's not that bad.
This class in itself could be very interesting. However, Dr. Lorenz makes the class drag on for a lot longer than necessary. The assignments are excessive and tedious. She doesn't give a lot of comp time for all of the outside events you have to attend. She is really understanding of circumstance though. She's really flexible, if you talk to her.
Wow, Dr. Lorenz was the best! Her expertise and versatility in the arts was to die for! She makes herself very easy to get ahold of by giving out her cell number to students. The Art unit was kind of dry but it picked up. However these past 4 months have formed a bond between Carol and I that I feel will last a lifetime! <3
Overall I enjoyed Dr. Loren's class. She is a bit crazy and pretty out there,but I thought she taught the class very well. She is very passionate and knowledgable about what she teaches. She also makes it very easy to get a good grade as long as you put in some effort.
Dr. Lorenz is a very knowledgeable and passionate professor. She really knows the material in which she teaches. If you make a mistake she goes out of her way to help you correct it before penalizing you. There are several papers and a sizable term paper in this class, but if you are not lazy and want to learn this shouldn't be a problem.
Dr. L is passionate about teaching & loves what she does. The class gives students exposure to many films and architectural design. If you are good at managing your time and attend class, then you will have no problems passing this course. I'd highly recommend her if you are an Arts, Theater, Acting, Film, or COPA major as this is her expertise.
Dr.Lorenz is a very enthusiastic teacher. She loves the arts and is very energetic with everything that she is presenting to the students. Everything that she teaches is very easy and interesting to learn. If you don't regularly attend classes she isn't the teacher for you. Attendance is very important in her class. All in all, I reccommend her.
Taking this course over the summer was a drag. She literally kept us til 9:40 every night. It started to get to the point that it was hard to follow especially because its all lecture and its extremely boring. Her requirements to write papers are ridiculous. I would recommend taking this class in the morn.
I originally signed up to take this class first summer session until I received the syllabus from the other professor teaching it. The amount of work is minimal in comparison to a Dr Lorenz taught class. She is passionate and very knowledgeable about the material and you will enjoy at least 75% of it.
Excellent professor! She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Had not real interest in the class prior to taking, but she made it very interesting. I think the dance would be more interesting if she somehow related it some more modern forms of dance. She gives a lot of work, but she is very fair.
Great professor. It is clear to see she is very passionate about teaching. I learned a ton from the class. I found it interesting how movies of a certain era reflected the current society. I'm glad I took this class with carol opened my knowledge to new interests.
Dr. Lorenz is very passionate about the material she teaches. It may not be a subject you are interested in before entering the class, but she's always enthusiastic about it. She will help you grow to like it. I recommend taking her class
Professor Lorenz is extremely knowledgable about all the subjects in her class. Her passion for teaching really helped me to remain focused in class. Which is hard to do for a night class.
She is a nice lady; however, she is very unclear on what she wants on projects. Ask questions and be specific when asking them. She likes to add loopholes.
Be prepared to answer random questions. Very knowledgeable about the art but comes a bit unorganized. Learned a lot in this class. One thing I liked about this class was that the tests were able to be studied prior to taken them.
She was very knowledgeable. Never received emails back from her. You have to call her, which I do not feel comfortable calling my teachers.

The class kept my attention. There were interesting things to learn about. Really the only negative thing I would have to say is that a lot of the lessons seemed very rushed and disorganized.
This class was alright. I don't feel as though I learned ALOT, just opened my eyes a little to the arts. Dr. Lorenz was a little scatterbrained, and she asked for your opinion but sometimes told you your opinion was wrong. But other than that, she knew what she was talking about. Just listen to her rules and go to class and you'll do fine. Its easy
If you want to have an easy COPA course, do not take. She is knowledgeable and knows the content but is so confusing and scatter brained it's hard to keep up with her. I had a hard time enjoying her class at all and even learning anything because her personality tended to block that.
Overwhelmed with assignments
She is one of the hardest and meanest professor. She will embarrass you while you are presenting. She will tell you your grade in front of the class, good or bad. She is just a mean person. I would get out of it if you can!
She's kind of like an unorganized person. She's weird about grading sometimes and some of her assignments (mostly all) are just long repetitive work. If your a sports person and not really artsy or into film, it's a frustrating class trying to relate to things in there and acting like you care. The documentary project at the end to is horrible too!
She was pretty nice but goes off on tangents for the entire class. This puts her behind so the last week of class she assigns 3 large presentations and papers because she ran out of time. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR THIS CLASS.
Carol Lorenz was the worst professor I've ever had. She is completely disorganized, often losing student's work. she can barely operate the computer which takes up most of the class time. A lot of the history she tries to teach you is wrong and religiously biased. She is extremely insensitive to the students feelings, usually yelling ridiculously.
Dr. Lorenz is a kind person and is clearly passionate and enthusiastic about the arts. However, she has a tendency to go off on tangents and students sometimes leave confused or with a lack of clarity on how to approach assignments. Assignments also get clustered together near the end of the semester with sections of the class overlapping together.
There is a huge list of assignments on Blackboard and it was difficult to understand which ones applied to us and which were there unnecessarily. I missed a pretty large assignment due to the confusing way it was listed. I guess that's my own fault, but I feel like it wouldn't take long to clean up the list and only show students what's relevant.
Easy A if you put even a tiny bit of effort into it. Yes, she has lots of feedback and sometimes it's tough to hear criticism, but if you read the assignment listed or take the time to ask her how something should be done, she will not hesitate to help you. She's a very knowledgeable professor.
A bit confusing sometimes, but she knows her stuff. You'd have to put actual effort into failing if you don't pass her class. So many opportunities for extra credit and she provides student with her cell phone number, allowing you to call her anytime if you ever need help with an assignment.

she talks way to much and takes the whole class to explain one thing. at times she can be very confusing on what she wants done and sometimes she will tell you something is due and she never assigned it. i do wish she used email to communicate rather then having to call her cell phone.
Dr Lorenz is a good teacher, just unorganized and confusing sometimes. Blackboard site has assignments and notes from different semestersyears so you really have to be in class to know what's going on. She knows her stuff but can go off on tangents, and the class gets behind. Assignments got bunched up towards the end, but overall she was easy

I'll admit she definitely knows a lot about what's discussed in class, but honestly the class was just really messy. She lost assignments that were handed in more than once, would say something was due when she never assigned it and sometimes put students down for not agreeing with her. Overall though, the class was pretty easy.
Oh, Carol. Such a zany, knowledgeable lady with a ton of professional performing experience but she's just a mess. She's a bit of a scatterbrain and is typically forgetting to tell us about assignments, getting confused on due dates, misplacing students' work, etc. Easy class overall, and quite interesting. Beware online exams - they take forever.

She is a very kind women, although she lacks ability to stay organized. Many of our assignments didn't have clear due dates, they were often changed based on when students would turn them in. She also makes her own format for writing assignments which was a huge pain.
Kind woman all around, but the class wasn't that useful. I learned a thing or two here and there but I feel like there needs to be more interactive experiences. For example, I really loved the walking tour. Hands-on experience is best-- for me, personally, though.

Oftentimes the work you are given in the class she is looking for something direct for you to get out of it. There were more assignments than I thought there would be for this class, but some of the assignments were helpful and fun.
This class was only an hour and a half but it felt agonizingly much longer. I've never experienced a larger waste of my time. I'm not sure if it's the classes fault or Dr. Lorenz's is, but it was awful. I didn't learn anything. She would repeat the same information every class for no purpose. Presentations took weeks at a time.
Dr. Lorenz is a very friendly lady. It's easy to see how much she cares for her students. She was very open to our feedback regarding assignments and in class activities. The only issue that I found was that she came up with her own format for writing papers. Overall, it's an easy class and there wasn't too much work.
I loved it! I learned so much about architecture-I notice it everywhere I go now! My favorite, though, was the film unit: horror and drama. I used to be scared of horror films, but Lorenz taught us about their sociological implications. For drama, I wish we would have started The Deer Hunter sooner. What we saw got me so interested! So fun!

The assignments were easy and so were the tests. You could take the test as many times as you wanted on blackboard. There were very little assignments. However, very disorganized. So much stuff (assignments) on blackboard that weren't even talked about. Overall, great teacher with tons of knowledge just a tad unorganized.
Carol is hysterical. She's your typical off the wall and very lively professor. Her lectures were interesting and there's a lot of movie watching. She's extremely kind, unless you text in class, just don't do that, it makes her crazy. Only complaint would be that she is never clear with assignment deadlines. Also, all of her tests are online.
Carol is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She will make you do projects and papers that are not part of the syllabus, she grades so harshly, she doesn't answer emails, and she is the worst person to reason with or talk to. If you have to take Oral Comm, choose a different professor.
She is a horrible teacher. She is very disorganized, and inconsistent. I took her for a public speaking class and she was unclear with directions, horrible to individuals suffering from anxiety, and even made a student cry. On several occasions, students walked out of her class out of sheer anger. She takes her opinions as fact without any basis.
Lorenz showed a lot of enthusiasm about humanities and the arts. However, she was often distracted and unable to explain the content in a way that was easy to understand. She got lost in her power points and videos. To say the least, my time would have been better spent if I had taken it online versus her class. And her final is ALL written facts.
Dr. Lorenz is a very logical and rational professor. The first couple of weeks in her class are when you'll experience how tough a professor can be., but down the stretch you will learn to respect her way, which is not the easy way. You can't just bulldoze your way in an assignment or an outline for a speech. Generally, a great Professor!
I had Dr. Lorenz for oral communication. Shes a tough grader and very specific on the way the outlines were supposed to be completed. A lot of people in my class struggled with adapting to her style. If you stay on track and do what youre suppose to do you shouldnt have a problem. Shes also very strict on phone use during class.
Do not take this proffesor. She is very narrow minded and at sometimes rude, very disorganized and confusing with what is expect of you throughout the course.
Shes insane and insanely tough because shes so picky and extra about the outlines. She wont approve your proposal to do your outline unless its perfect (in her eyes) makes you lay on the floor and yell random things, weird breathing exercises every class. She yells at you if youre not practically screaming at her during your speech & exercies
Well she is a pretty awful teacher. She is the only teacher I have ever had that makes 10 minutes feel like 2 hours. She is very disorganized and half the time it doesn't seem like she even knows what she is doing. Do not recommend taking her classes
From day one students have complained about Dr. Lorenz due to the LAZY assumption that she is too "hard". The truth: she assigns several speeches to OUTLINE and submit throughout the semester and then present in class with notes to read from. It is nothing difficult AT ALL. Other teachers expect much less making Lorenz look like the "bad guy".
Dr Lorenz has given me tools that I can carry with me unlike many other professors that I have. Yes, she is one of the more difficult professors that you'll have, but you are actually learning. The only way you won't do well in her class is if you slack. I feel for the students who only gripe about her because in my opinion, she was very helpful.
Dr. Lorenz requires outlines and speeches (at times a heavy workload); however, she prepares her students for life. At the beginning of the semester, I would never have given a speech. Recently, I delivered a speech to an entire auditorium to the complements of my peers.
There is no doubt this class was not an easy A, but thats not always a bad thing. At times I admit I was extremely frustrated but in the end I know that I will be able to use the material learned such as proposing a clear and organized outline, in life. Classes wont always be easy, same with the professor but in the end, its worth it
Wont just give it to you but she is very understanding and an amazing person if you seek her help ! Lovely experience.
She encourages you to be the best you. From her giving out her number and forcing students to call she wants no slack from you because she knows that you can do it. I loved her drive to get all the speeches done even if they were late. You need her to show you how to keep yourself organized with getting assignments done on time.
She seems to not understand that her class is a gen ed. Also she makes you do breathing exercises that are highly at teaching people how to breathe properly. Would not recommend her class.
A lot of work for a general education class, but some of it is beneficial but again is a lot, and if you aren't ready to work then this class will be difficult. She does help you get use to speaking in front of people but the lengths she goes can seem like way too much. But honestly if you want a good grade do the work how she wants it.
Her teaching makes me angry. It's not that she's a bad teacher. She is just so dedicated to her ideology that it comes off in somewhat of a negative attitude to anyone with differing opinions. Giving speeches in her class is like presenting a science fair project over and over again until your mind melts from the hammering words she instills in you
Carol Lorenz is by far the worst professor I had at Point Park. For outlines of our speeches/ opinions on our speeches, it has to either be her way or no way. Just some of the things she has said to me over the phone about the topics of my speeches was uncalled for. She makes you do breathing exercises that does not help with public speaking at all
I did not have this type of structured work in high school so it was great to learn how to write an outline and how to be so specific with what you are talking about and its air tight. I think she had an okay organization, but got frazzled when one thing did not go as planned. Needs more room in syllabus for times when the day needs more flexibilit
Her class was the most work I've had all throughout college, and especially alot for a general education class. She is very picky about how she wants proposal/outlines. However, she is always available by phone to help or when she is fed up with your work. She also sends out like 10 emails a week which is very annoying.
Carol is a snap. She crazy. She does expect a lot, it's not a class you can just easily get a good grade for, she actually makes you put effort into it. She will help you as much as possibly, but she will also annoy you. Just know if you're a slacker don't do it.
For Comm, a class that is required, and I got the one professor that cares deeply about this course. That's, not a bad thing, her lectures are long, she doesn't always explain what she wants well, and she can be meticulous. Dr. Lorenz tends to forget that we are incredibly busy, we hardly had enough time for the whole syllabus.
I desperately wish I could rewind time and take COMM 101 with any professor but Lorenz. I've always been decent at speeches,but her proposal and outline formats (not to mention required recorded rehearsals that are hard to schedule) are so strict and nitpicky that falling behind is more of the norm for everybody than being prepared is
The worst class I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing. If you are a freshman at PPU and get her for oral communications, beg if you have to to get a different professor. Miss one deadline and you can't pass the class, even if you had 100% the rest of the course. Would give 0/5 if I could.
Professor Lorenz made Arts and the human experience one of the most fun classes I took all semester and I highly enjoyed it. She was very caring, held many class discussions and gave out many bonus opportunities. I highly recommend taking this class because you will not only learn about different periods of art but also facts about Pittsburgh.
I truly enjoyed having Dr. L as my professor for the Arts and Human Experience. She made the class a ton of fun. She encourages the ideas of all her students. She also goes through each unit carefully to make sure that her students understand the material. I highly recommend taking class from her if given the chance!
I really enjoyed my Arts&Humanities class w/Dr. Lorenz. She's specific about what she expects from assignments, tests weren't hard to study for, and her power points are accessible through schoology to study if you're not great at note taking. Sometimes lectures were lengthy but she always tries to break it up w/videos and asking for thoughts.
She was the most helpful and understanding teacher I ever had. She communicates with her students and she is willing to push back due dates and check up on you to make sure that you are enjoying yourself. Her teaching methods is creative and it keeps you engaged. It made the transition to in person classes again really easy
Dr. Lorenz is very knowledgeable. I really liked her class even though it was not what I was expecting. I did learn a lot of things and I'm grateful for that! She does not know how to use Schoology very well so be careful with assignments because they will not show on the home page with due dates like in other classes.
VERY RUDE!!!! when you need help she says you need to get help now, she wont accept any of your work unless its perfect, when you need help she will make you feel completely stupid. if your no ready for your speech be prepared to lose a letter grade.
She is extremely strict but not always rude, often makes you nervous when grading your speeches.(If you cry easily, do not sign up for this class.)

Lorenz is an old fashioned professor who reveres her theatre days. Unfortunately, this means she treats everyone as if they are going into theater. For a required class with people from all majors who don't need the same level of public speaking skills as a theatre major, she is harsh, comes across as rude, and is often unclear with grading. :/
One of the worst things about her teaching is her organization of assignments online. If you have her for COMM 101, none of the assignments have a due date, so it can make it hard to remember to turn things in on time. Her supplemental online examples are near impossible to find because her organization of the materials online is sorely lacking.
Even though my ability to speak in-front of an audience was improved, it was the only benefit of this class. Dr. Lorenz is very harsh when giving her feedback, is not clear on due dates and assignments, and lets her personal beliefs seep through in her attitude and grading. This course was way harder than it needed to be, and it was very stressful.
Carol Lorenz is a very sweet lady, however she is difficult to reach outside of class. Her class structure is difficult to follow and is very heavy in the last few weeks of the course. Ultimately she cares about her students but the class is difficult to stay on top of and in full knowledge of what is going on
My public speaking did improve, but the feedback given by professor was harsh at times. There were no specific deadlines and the class was hard to follow. The class was stressful and we had to follow specific procedures and extra steps that other classes did not.
The things that improved for me in this class were my comfortability speaking in front of people and ability to do efficient research. Dr. Lorenz seemed nice during the first week but ended up being very harsh and blatantly rude. It's her way only, and she grades based off her own personal beliefs. Dr. Lorenz is a great professor and an even greater person. She's always willing to help, and really knows how to make you dig deeper into speeches than you ever possibly thought you could. Be ready to work, and DONT FALL BEHIND or you will find yourself in a hole!
Lorenz is nice and cares deeply about the material. My public speaking did improve dramatically, but it felt like an advanced level course rather than a required one. Her Schoology page is unorganized and there is a lack of due dates, making it easy to fall behind. Easily the most stressful and highest work load of any class I took this semester.
You will come out of Lorenz's class with a very clear understanding of public speaking but you will go through hell to do it. With no clear deadlines, you are very much responsible for getting your speeches turned in in advance. The amount of stress you will have in the class can not be understated. I'm pretty sure this class gave me anxiety.
She is a very nice and helpful person. Just be prepare to be overloaded with many speech assignments throughout the semester. It is very easy to fall behind in this class, as there are no strict deadlines so be sure to stay on top of it. The amount of unnecessary work given just makes this class terrible.
Ms Lorenz is very passionate about what she teaches, it is important to check Schoology every week for your assignments as they do not appear on your To Do List so it is easy to fall behind. The class will have you do some extracurricular activities for your grade as-well so just be aware of that.
Personally I didn't enjoy this course, there were a lot of extra out-of-class things we had to do that I couldn't find time in my schedule for, and she seemed to be a bit disoriented and unorganized during class. I'd say the best thing to do is be better at communicating with her than I was to ensure you don't fall behind.
The class is decent in content, but where I feel it suffers is the workload. The typical "watch this video and take notes" is fine, but the out of class assignments were where I had troubles. I couldn't fit going to an opera or dance performance in my schedule. If you're going to take this class I'd suggest communicating these issues with her.
Carol definitely is passionate about the arts and that shows through in her teaching. Her class is very lecture heavy and there are a lot of papers. She is pretty lenient about assignments being turned in on time but is a tough grader. We only had two tests and she allows corrections. I learned a lot in her class and am glad I took it.
Dr. Lorenz is a very good teacher. Very hands on and reachable. However, there were a lot of outside events that we had to attend, and it definetly made the class harder in essence. For anyone that plans to take this class, consider that for sure.
Dr Carol Lorenz knows what she is teaching very well and is overly qualified to teach, but she is old school. The work she assigns feels unnecessarily time consuming. Honestly, what I learned wasn't worth the effort I had to put forth. That is not to say I don't appreciate what I learned. I just feel that it could have been easier on the students.
