learned a lot, but tests were hard-had contradiciting info from book and notes.
Good guy, lectures mostly, funny. Enjoyable class
Good lecturer, but very unorganized, always right, and bad at making tests (she has the students maket he tests in social psych yuck!!)
The more I have class with her, the more I like her. She is easy and entertaining to listen to and obviously enjoys what she does. Tests can be difficult if you don't study. Overall one of the better psych professors here.
by far the absolute worst professor i've had in 4.5 years of college. lecture and book material contradicts, doesn't go over exams even when the class average is a 76%! isn't up to date on lots of material, very disorganized, very difficult meet with
Very thorough. Lectures are interesting and engaging. Tests are tough but not impossible. She is very good about making sure everyone understands. I have learned a lot and use the information to help me with other classes. Definately worth taking.
Good lectures, contradicts her reading assignments, looses things and doesn't really care about the students, more wrapped up in her own personal issues than teaching, just teaching to make a living, not because she cares.
Dont count on her to do anything for you quickly...it took over 4 months to change a grade that she screwed up on. Not very accessible to her students. She takes forever to get back to you.
very unhelpful to students. she takes FOREVER to grade papers and change problems with grades. she's full of herself and her social psych research. notes don't make sense, they contain mostly opinions instead of factual information. tests are difficult.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR! She doesn't take crap from students and that's a good thing. If you do your work you will do well.
one of the most interesting lectures i've ever had. kind of a ****, with really hard tests.
hard but good! learned A LOT from carol oyster. really insteresting to listen to and really enjoyed her lectures. definately have to study for tests and take time on papers, but worth it!
There are other people in this world besides Oyster, but she doesn't know it.She tells people she's a b*tch... and she's right. She lost a couple of my papers and didn't record my first test until the end of the semester.Very rude when going in to see her
She is not a good teacher at all, she is rude and self centered, and you will have no idea how you are doing in the class until you get your final grade.
I like her a lot. She's rough around the edges but a great teacher. Knows her stuff. Soc. Psych was just like sociology plus psychology so there is a lot of overlap.
She is very willing to help students out if they need to have help. The downfall is the fact that she is rather opinionated and its hard to get a good grade on a paper where you disagree with her. Her tests seem easy, but when you get them its not uncommon to have a lower grade than you expected.
VERY VERY OPINIONATED! Wow, I have never had a teacher that judgmental towards Christians in my life, I know that there are some bad cases with Christians but she was pretty much just saying that ALL christians are judgmental. Her information didnt go along with her tests at all
I've never had a teacher who is so rude. She is good at teaching and explains things well and knows her stuff but her personality is awful. She is VERY unapproachable and rude. She encourages you to approach her if you have a question, but then when you do, she makes you feel horrible.
Horrible teacher. Hard tests. Does not test you on what we learned. Tests random information or on very specific aspects that you would have to read the book 6 times to know the answer. Not approachable; turns you away during her office hours.
It is true that she is very opinionated but if you play the game you can easily get an A. All you have to do is write what she expects for the papers. Lectures make you think if nothing else even if you do not agree with her it will help to formulate your own opinions.
MEAN and INCONSIDERATE
knows what she's talking about, very helpful if you ask, but you need to know what she's looking for especially on papers, very willing to change things in the class that don't work
Well, despite what others may have said, I think she is a great teacher! She gives clear examples to help explain things better and makes class very interesting! Just wonderful.
I think she is an AWESOME professor. She is very clear, open to questions, and encourages discussion. She may have opinions, but that is what makes the class so much fun. If you are looking for 'a good time' take this class with Prof. Oyster for sure!
Completely unapproachable. Her tests are random questions, not indicitive of the notes/readings. Her grading on the two papers is solely subjective. She will not cancel class even though she will not be there. She does not like questions and becomes hostile if you disagree or question her.
five year olds could write better exams

She's definitely interesting.
I like this class very much. She's so funny but with a dry, sarcastic humor. She tries to give bonus points to the people who show up on fridays and shows videos. The test are kind of hard, but read the book and take notes along the way and they're not that bad.
Loved this class! I learned a lot of new and interesting things about sex!

She's a great professor. She can be very opinionated, but she has good reason to be. She's passionate about the issues and subject matter. I definitely recommend taking her class... but one piece of advice... DON'T BE LATE! (She hates that.)

Don't take her unless you're a serious student. She wants you to be honest and serious. If you want to slack off, cheat, or disengage, forget her.
I hear she is different in different courses (this being her best). I had her for Human Sexuality and she was a decent professor. Nothing special, but decent and passionated about the topic.
She wasn't as hard as many people believe.. her tests are fairly easy.. need to attend class in order to pass.. can't skip.. ever!

good teacher, pay attention to details and read the book and you'll be fine only 2 papers and 3 tests and a not cumulative final

Don't expect this teacher to help you out in any way. She told the class that she will make an attempt to be nice if you stop by her office, but she doesn't feel that she has to be nice or helpful to students. Shows a lot of movies when she doesn't feel like teaching. Take a different psych elective if you can!
You're better off taking this class in the SOC department, at least they are actual social researchers. She writes test questions that are completely subjective to whether or not you agree with her skewed view of the world, if you don't agree you're not going to do well on the tests. Likes to stick irrelevant vocab from the book in her tests.
interesting and engaging entertaining
Dr Oyster is amazing! Everyone who thinks she's difficult doesn't understand that YOU'RE IN COLLEGE! You're here to get an education, her tests can be difficult if you don't do the work. Why pay for a class that you learn nothing from? Her class is easily do-able.. take a risk and learn something!
Professor Oyster is an amazing lady. She is a good teacher who presents her ideas in a clear fashion. Her powerpoint slides are posted online to print off. She gives statistics and dates but doesn't require much memorization of those facts. She is very knowledgeable on the subject matter and could get into more detail than she does if needed.
This teacher is seriously messed up. She teaches social psychology but she herself is riddled with hateful biases that she brings unapologetically into the classroom. She is discriminatory to Christians and contemptuous to anyone who doesn't believe the way she does. Her bad attitude gets old. She tears down rather than builds up. Avoid her!
She is probably the worst professor I have ever had at uwl. It is interesting how she claims to base everything on research but tends to constantly "makeup stories" on everything she speaks about. It funny how large of a Hypocrite she is. Expect all tests questions to be opinion. Especially on the final in socialpsy (w/abnormal psy ?'s on it)
Easily the most interesting class I have had yet. Great lecturer, always had interesting stories to relate the material to real life. Four exams (multiple choice) and two papers. Not an easy class but definitely interesting and worth the challenge!!
Very opinionated and seems inapproachable but is helpful if you ask. Her tests are kinda hard, and she's a tough grader on the papers. But, her final exam is SO easy, she understands we have other finals to study for that may be more important. I was at a B in her class, got 100 on the final with minimal studying and ended with an A in the class :)
Difficult grader on papers, but the tests are pretty easy. Make sure you show up because some lecture material is on the exam. She seems unapproachable at first but she was very helpful when I asked for it. Don't turn in assignments late if you want to pass. Can be a bit repetitive and scatterbrained but generally interesting.
Far too tough on grading papers
Carol was a great teacher. If you feel she is a tough paper grader, then you write poor papers. I always received the grades I deserved. She isn't afraid to treat her class like the mature adults we all should at least be attempting to be. I respect her honest approach and would recommend her to anyone who can appreciate that.
I loved Oyster in Social Psych. Tests are easy and based off of powerpoints she posts online. Her paper grading isn't as bad as people say. Just proof read and use spell check and you'll be fine. I thought she was a great lecturer and always had great stories that related to our material.
Stay away!
Very good teacher. Her paper grading is a little hard as she rarely gives out A's. Her tests are so easy, just use your commonsense and your at least guaranteed a C on them without studying. Sadly she is only teaching social psy for the next couple years. If you can take her!
Interesting class, but awful prof. Does not seem to care about students or their success at all. Not very available for help and comes off as too harsh to even make students want to ask for help. No matter how hard studied, got the same grade on exams which seemed fairly subjective. Would NOT recommend!
She seems a little unorganized at times but the class is pretty easy and straight foreward. The exams are all multiple choice, she is just a tough grader on the papers
We had six grades the whole semester: 4 tests and 2 papers. The papers were graded like English papers; barely anyone got an A. Also, if you came to class 2 minutes late on a day a paper was due to turn it in, it was docked one letter grade. She is very strict. Do NOT take her.
Her lectures were interesting, but the material she expected us to know on the test was unpredictable. I read and went to class and studied and never got better than a B on a test. She wasn't helpful telling us what to study. Papers were interesting and she was very clear about what she expected, i did well on those. Okay teacher.
She is one of the worst psych professors at uwl. On the 1st day of lecture she seemed like such a nice lady and very helpful - she is the exact opposite. If you usually get good grades on papers this is not the class for you. I felt like I was in an EFN class all over again and not a psych class. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
She is the worst teacher I've ever had, she grades starting from a C. She can talk about the weather and relate it back to gay marriage. She doesn't cover the material that's actually on the test so when you do take it...you're like when did we ever learn this. I actually went to the class and did bad. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T NEED.
All she talks about is Gay Marriage and how to effectively kill yourself in the class. It has nothing to do with social psychology and in fact, I felt like I was taking The Psychology of Gay Marriage. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Worst class and teacher EVER!
Wouldn't recommend taking this class. The class was interesting but when it came to tests most of the stuff on it we never discussed or went over at all. And her grading of papers is horrible you never know whats wrong with them or how to make them better. Class would be good with a different teacher.
Very opinionated and the slides are hard to follow. Tests are hard and the questions will throw you for a loop, but if you show up and do the work and extra credit, you should do ok.
The tests aren't that bad. I studied her powerpoints and read but there was always some I didn't know where they came from. Her paper grading is pretty hard. She offers a lot of extra credit. Getting a B isn't hard but an A was impossible. Very nice lady though, really enjoyed her lectures.
Carol is a great teacher! Very determined to help you in any way. Lectures are relatable and interesting. Tests are fairly easy-- about 40 multiple choice. She has high standards for papers, but c'mon people, we're college students. Overall I really enjoyed having her!
She's very interested and knowledgable on the topic of class and makes her lectures interesting. She reads off powerpoints and there are a lot of notes, but it's not too bad. Tests are decent. Definitely study your notes and do all the readings! Class isn't a lot of work, but getting an A can be difficult.
Dr. Oyster is rude, and unapproachable to students. Her grading on papers is very hard. They are graded like English papers instead of Psych papers. A lot of her information is outdated. Avoid her if you can.
Do not take this class if you don't need to, Professor Oyster does not care about your grade and is just not a good teacher. It is unfortunate because this could be a great class with a different teacher. I think a lot of students could agree with me.
I found tests to be difficult, but most likely because I missed a lot of class. She isn't the most interesting professor but I've definitely had worse. Go to class if you want to do well.
Oyster makes little effort to meet students outside of class even during office hours. She tends to be unorganized and even lost a paper of mine. When she didn't lose my papers they were corrected harshly with little feedback. Watch your paragraphing- she wants only 5 sentences roughly per paragraph- rediculous. I would not recommend her.
Do not recommend taking her. She is unfriendly and rude. She was also fairly unorganized and always behind on posting grades which got to be annoying.
She's mean, she's unorganized. I don't understand how she's still teaching. Well she's giving up soc psy. I wonder why? She lost papers, wanted ID #s and still lost papers. Lost tests. Graded horribly. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Horrible. If you do end up with her SMILE, she's a fool for that. :D even then, toward the end, she will hate you.
she really knows her stuff. interesting topic, i actually enjoyed going to class. our final grades posted within 24 hours of taking the final. people complain about her taking a long time to return papers, she uses ID numbers instead of names and by now if you can't get your ID right, you deserve to wait a couple more days. very cool lady. take her
I loved her!!! This is by far the most interesting psychology class I've taken and it is because of Dr. Oyster. She's tough and she tells you how it's going to be from the first day of class. My class had problems following directions apparently, but all you have to do is pay attention and you will do fine.
Dr. Oyster is fantastic. She's exactly what I expect from a college professor. She is incredibly intelligent and has great experiences to share. She's tough but this is a college course. She expects effort and explains exactly what she wants while always being open to questions via email or in class as well as amending the syllabus. I loved her!
I wouldn't recommend this professor. She was a tough grader on papers, but that was expected. Tests weren't too bad. It took her a really long time to get papers graded and back. She wasn't professional, she used comic sans font for syllabus and rubrics and sent emails that had quite a bit of attitude. She also seemed to be unorganized at times.
she is very cold. she never returned an email about meeting with her during office hours. went to her office and she was very rude and had the attitude "well theres nothing i can do about it". she made me feel like i was wasting her time. she makes no effort to get to know her students and the D number thing is a joke! we are people, with names!
As a first semester freshman, Carol has been a great professor. She offers open-question review sessions before tests, is willing to take constructive criticism in efforts to increase quality of learning, and is extremely down to earth. Recommended taking Ethnic and Racial Studies.
I'm currently in my first semester here at UWL and she's at the top of my list for professors. She makes sure you know your stuff but the notes she provides in class are great. Down to earth person and has a good sense of humor in class.
She is an excellent professor! She is passionate about what she teaches, and is always looking out for her students. She has many interesting stories that give the class a deeper understanding of the material
unreliable.
Not sure what I think.. class is boring. Have both tests and papers. None are hard. She offers to proofread the papers but the suggestions are confusing. She is old and cranky. Proceed with Caution
Acts like she's to busy to help students at all, hard to reach, forgets to do things. Tests are very poorly written, it doesn't pay to study and you can't ever see it after to talk about problems. Essays are returned month after and rubric is given two weeks after turned in. Topics are common sense more than psych such as interviewing, funerals, ect
Do not take her. She lost half of our tests and acts like she is better than everyone else. She forgets to do many things and has very poorly written tests.
She asks confusing questions on exams and is constantly trying to clarify them on exams. She is very unorganized, doesn't respond to emails when she says you can contact her whenever. She also sends out emails with attitude when she does respond. Lost exams. I would avoid her at all costs
If you don't understand something or need help, good luck getting clarification or an e-mail back. For an ERS professor, she doesn't seem open to new ideas or change, and I noticed a lot of micro-aggressions. No tests, two large papers with presentations. I got an A, but did not feel comfortable voicing opinion in class for fear of rejection
Very unorganized. Inconsistent. Thinks she's super awesome. Unclear tests with things never talked about. Can be a GPA ruiner if you're not careful.
I really enjoyed taking this class. Dr. Oyster is entertaining, the material is interesting, and the time passes quickly. She is relatively unorganized, goes off on a lot of tangents, and her tests are slightly difficult, but overall its a good class and she's a good professor.
She was one of the worst professors I've had at UW-L. Her exams are confusing and poorly written. She doesn't respond to emails. She lost and gave us misprinted exams. She is obviously a seasoned researcher in psychology but shouldn't be teaching.
