This instructor is fair but difficult and not very understanding or lenient. You are forced to go by the book/syllabus or else. You cannot catch up, if you get behind and miss an assignment too bad, no excuses allowed. Things must be turned in on time. In addition professor is not very patient when explaining things. Homework is weighed too heavily
Awesome professor. Statistics can be overwhelming at times, but if you stop by her office for office hours she is more than willing to explain everything. Tells you exactly what you need to study and how to succeed in the course. She is very funny, makes lots of jokes and that makes the material easier to understand and more interesting to learn
One of the best profs I've ever had. Funny, clear and very helpful. She may be on the strict side but is fair and open about expectations. Wish I could take more than the two classes I already have. She's that good. I always sort of liked statistics but now I love them. Thanks so much.
She is awesome!!!!!!
This woman is a saint. Others might tell you that the work was hard or that they didn't understand, but they clearly never went to her and asked for help. She is the most accommodating and understanding professor I've ever had. She took the time to explain when we didn't understand. She clearly cares a great deal for her students.
Honestly, Saltsgaver is the absolute worst professor at UIS. She was a great professor... to those of her "favorite" students who she called out by name on both emails and announcements to the class. Her idea of being "overly helpful" consisted of her referring you back to the syllabus, which obviously didn't help. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Clear material and always willing to help. I wish I had her for my next math class!
I don't know if she is cut out for being an online instructor. No multimedia. She gives you her slides, a section of the book and hw/quiz deadlines. Hw is graded as right or wrong, with no explanation of errors. Its challenging content, for sure, but I think for what I'm paying, I could be getting a MUCH better value
I've always been good at math, but i found this class to be very difficult. The lecture slides don't explain much. You'll have to practically read the chapters in the text books multiple time, and teach yourself. Homework was also very time consuming (8-12 hrs to complete). I did get an A+, but it required A LOT, and i mean A LOT of studying.
Great teacher! Very helpful and is always available to help you. But you must do homework on time and study! Also while the book is mandatory she give alternatives.
She's very helpful. Stats is complicated for most. She goes pretty fast but she is willing to slow down if you speak up.
Do NOT TAKE HER!!!! She acts like a child and if the class does poorly on a test she will take it out on everyone. She doesn't have an actual grading scale. You get whatever she feels like giving you.
Professor Saltsgaver was very helpful in statistics class. It was a difficult class but she was very clear with what she expected from the students. I would definitely recommend students to take statistics with her.
I have never taken a math class that I actually enjoyed. Shes super nice and explains things thoroughly. Usually the people who don't like her are the ones who failed because they didn't do hw,didnt study, missed class often, or didnt ask her for help. I recommend her, and if i could i would definitely take her class again!
She is a nice woman outside of class but becomes a toddler when she doesn't get her way. Her test are not based on the homework given nor is the homework helpful on the test. She will place questions on the test that the class will not understand and will blame the class for not understanding.
Pretty tough class but she was always willing to help and was even willing to slow it down for the whOle class because so many students were struggling. It is a hard subjeCT and she is a pro at it. If she's going too fast you need to speak up, she's always happy to explain things again.
She is such a nice person. She helps you when you need it and grades things immediately so you aren't left wondering for long.
Overall, she is a really good professor if you ask for help she is there for you. Her tests can be pretty tough, make sure you study, do the homework, and exam reviews; they are essential to passing the tests. The class can be pretty confusing at times, but like I said shes there if you ask for help.
She's a fun math teacher. She's patient and will repeat herself if needed. Homework is required to pass this class and she's a fan of "Pop" quizzes. Overall a good teacher.
Not a bad professor, but I didn't really care for her class. She's got a pretty good attitude and is absolutely willing to help if you need it. Go to class every day and don't forget your calculator. She requires you show work for credit, which I think is ridiculous in college, but that was really my only complaint.
This professor is not good for online courses. It was required that we buy her textbook that has multiple errors in it (3-5 per chapter) and it was very difficult to read the material and apply it. I did not have many positive takeaways from this course as I mainly followed steps in the examples as best I could and did them on the quizzes/exams.
I took stats several semesters ago, so I don't remember everything, but I liked Prof Saltsgaver a lot. She's organized, encouraging, and very competent as a professor. It can be hard to keep up with her notes in-class, but she works hard to explain info and wants you to succeed. Do your homework, apply yourself, and don't be afraid to ask for help!
Text was written by her. It has multiple errors that the Professor has to correct often. Do Not take online! The most minimal error in uploading the work and she will try to give you a zero. No compassion and no understanding. Comes off as rude and with a disdain for her job.
Awful. You're required to purchase an eBook that she wrote. It contains so many errors that every single week she posts a list of 'corrections' for that week's chapter. It's $60 but she made a point of telling us it's a fair price. Homework assignments lack clarity and specificity, and she'll gladly give you a 0 for not reading her mind. AVOID.
The book was not clear and neither were the lecture notes. The directions for using the calculator were clear at first but after the 2nd chapter I relied on Google. She insists we use her book even though she posts 3-5 corrections per chapter. Had she not provided the answers for odd numbered questions I would have failed. Very little direction.
As previously said students had to purchase a textbook that SHE wrote. The tests are very difficult and unclear, to the point where a student who took her class and did well last year could not even understand what she was looking for. Also she discourages questions that she believes are "obvious", berating and making fun of students who ask them.
Saltsgaver is the name and salt she gave. This was honestly the worst class I've ever taken in my life. Required text is a book she published so there's that. Beyond that, book has errors in it and doesn't clearly define concepts. She is unclear about what she actually wants and seems to grade on a whim, plus the amount of homework is ridiculous.
Worst professor and worst class I had ever had. Amount of Homework is unnecessary and ridiculous. Professor is not sure on what she want. Very particular demands of how exactly sentence should be put in. Giving ridiculous grading. No explanation on what is wrong. I did well on class only because all online quizzes and exams, I got full marks.
Book was written by this teacher. It has many errors, therefore constant revisions and corrections. She is intimidating and unapproachable. She seems bothered if you breathe the wrong way. As far as the class, DO NOT take without a strong math background because assignments are excessive and confusing. Online tests are a time consuming nightmare.
This professor is undoubtedly one of the worst I've ever encountered. She has a horrible attitude and talks down to students. She gives too much homework. She doesn't teach the material well at all. I don't feel like I have a better understanding of stats because I took her class. She explains nothing and her book has a LOT of errors.
Very unorganized
Hope you have a ton of time for busywork ... she seems to revel in assigning an overly ridiculous amount of homework. I'm in favor of difficult homework if it is going to improve my knowledge, but each assignment spends more time doing busywork (figure out how to draw a graph that isn't used to solve the problem 30 times!) than I did learning!
Gives too much homework, doesn't really care for her students. Makes fun of them regularly.
Im surprised by these ratings for her. She was nothing but helpful with any questions and had great lectures. Would definitely take again. Hope this helps someone who may be taken back by the comments.
I loved having Carol as a professor. She was a great teacher, she knows her stuff and cares about her students. There is a lot of homework but its not due until test day and its worth doing for easy points. She gives reviews for tests, DO THEM they really help.
This class is not as bad as the reviews make it seem. I was terrified after reading them but she is a pretty good teacher. She gives good examples in class and if you do your homework you will do well on the exams. She may be a little strict but its not too bad. Sometimes shes really funny. I always had a good time in her class.
I went into this class very worried that I wasnt going to succeed. Professor Saltsgaver helped me and other students so much. Shes very competent as a professor. She will set you straight and let you know that stats isnt a walk in the park. Show up to class, be prepared for quizzes at any time, and dont be afraid to ask her questions.
Mrs. Saltsgaver is a wonderful professor. I wish I had the opportunity to take more than just STATS with her. If you do your homework, you will do wonders in the class. She is always willing to help her students in any way, you just have to put forth the effort. I do not understand the reasoning behind many of the negative reviews on her profile.
I enjoyed her class a lot and she is willing to help you when and where you need it!
I am not good at math by any means, but if you use the textbook, notes and video lectures, it's pretty easy. Sometimes I would be stuck for an hour on something, but if I emailed her she would explain it and then I would be on a roll again. Not hard to pass if you apply yourself. Pretty much you teach yourself off of the notes and stuff, & ask ?'s.
I've had Professor Saltsgaver for Applied Stats. To say the least, this was not a great experience. If you do decide to take her, make sure your homework is up to date (showing all work), ace exams, and if you need to get ahold of her, email constantly because sometimes she won't respond until the very end. Best of luck.
Take stats literally anywhere else. This class is an absolute joke and you will spend hours doing complete busywork. Homework must have work shown in just the right way to get credit. If you have nothing better to do with your life you'll love the mind-numbing content and being able to watch hours of your life go wasting away in front of you.
She is a JOKE. Being such a low level 100 level stats class, I spend more time each week making sure I show all my work on her homework than I do in 400 level engineering classes. I can't believe someone can waste so much of student's time instead of letting people go at their own pace. Also, you must buy her book which has bad revisions.
Get ready for lots of busywork with this one... Super easy class but come on, who has time to write down every single step of 20+ problems each week. Plus, if you miss anything she gives 0 credit. IDK how someone can be that miserable with their sad life to be stuck teaching 100 level stats and being this uncompromising and burn others time.
She makes your do homework which is not hard, but there is so much of if that you will spend hours and hours on each assignment. If you enjoy drawing graphs by hand and entering huge datasets into your TI83 calculator, this is the class for you! And if not, well too bad because UIS doesn't have another stats instructor.
This class had my anxiety levels so high. The amount of work was excessive too much and it took many hours. she is a very tough grader. If your missing a sentence or one wrong answer its a 0 automatically. Its suppose to be a 100 course level not even my 400 level courses are that overwhelming and more during these difficult times.
Carol is a terrible professor. She gives very little feedback with her endless homework, and marks the entire question wrong if you miss a single step HER WAY. Oh, and you also have the buy the textbook SHE wrote. She refuses to let you work ahead (get ready for weekly 5-6 hr HW) and offers no extra credit. My 400 level CS classes were easier.
I can only speak for her Online class but everything from June to this review is spot on. I would need more than the character limit would allow to list every issue, the main problem being excessive homework. Her grading can also be very unclear, as in wording in a sentence can get you marked wrong. Expect hours doing HW for sure. Good luck!
I took her class online and it was stats. I took it in the middle of a pandemic and in the summer, she was not very understanding because I did make a mistake once on the homework. I did tell her everything that was going on at home and if I could fix the assignment, she told me no still. Her books also had a lot of incorrect answers. Not worth it
Carol is a super kind, organized, caring teacher. She has super clear notes and always answers questions. When I took the class our quizzes were all open book. She gave us points for simply taking the notes and completing the homework. Shes also hilarious! She genuinely is a great teacher.
The professor is rude, unsupportive and doesn't provide clear communication about test requirements. Grading is a guessing game with points deducted for things that are not clearly explained in home work assignments nor tests. The professor isn't passionate about her students education and treats the course like it is something to be endured.
I took this course as an Online course and I have to say at first I was surprised by the workload. However, every math course has heavy workloads so this class was no exception. The Wonderful thing about this class is that Prof. Saltsgaver had her own book. I took this class in Spring 2017.
There are MANY problems in the homework assignments, but she is very clear on how to receive full credit for the problems. She is very responsive to email. Lecture videos were very informative with clear instruction. Overall, a good experience.
Carol is a great professor and is highly intelligent in her subject. She taught her class with passion and really showed that she wanted her students to learn. The class has a lot of homework and bookwork, so it is important to stay on top of it, but it is 100% feasible. I took the class in person, with a full 18 credit hour load, & was fine!
Professor Saltsgaver is an amazing professor! She gives great lectures and feedback. There is a lot of homework in this class but she gives you weeks to do it until it is due. She is also very personable and caring person that is always willing to help you. She is also available outside of class and is always willing to help you succeed.
I am not good at math but I still felt like I was given all the materials to help me succeed. I took it online due to the pandemic, but there was a range of options that helped fit each learning style; powerpoints, lectures, discussion boards, and tutoring sessions. Even though I struggled, Saltsgaver knew the course materials inside and out.
As someone that was terrible at AP statistics in high school, I was so scared to have to take it again in college. Professor Saltsgaver is one of the greatest math professor/teachers I have ever had! She responded quick to any emails or questions, and could answer in multiple ways if I did not understand. I HIGHLY recommend this course with her!
I loved Saltsgaver!! I took her Statistics course and struggled at the beginning, but she never gave up on me. She will make time for you outside of class and as long as you put the effort in she will make sure you succeed. I have since gotten my MBA and she has been there to write letters of recommendation whenever I needed her! Take her class!
Professor Saltsgaver was honestly one of the best math teachers I have ever had and made stats a breeze. Yes, there is a lot of homework, but you get until the test to complete and most answers are given in back of book. If you dont understand, ask! She is passionate and willing to help. Put in the effort, do the work, and ask for help.
I had to take statistics as a requirement. Professor was extremely nice and helpful. This is one of the only classes where I felt the professor actually cared on my progress. The lectures were straightforward and interactive. We actually used the book for assignments. The tests were straightforward as well and actually related to the homework.10/10
Professor Saltsgaver is not only an amazing professor but an amazing individual as well. Her stats class is a great math class to take and she does a great job at explaining concepts and if you need help, she is always there!
Saltsgaver is a great professor who makes sure you can succeed in the course! She wrote the textbook used in class in order to effectively teach the material without having to cover material that is pointless. The homework is not excessive and is graded fairly. Each chapter of homework has its own guidelines in order to get full credit.
She is always willing to help and great at making the course fun with in-class activities. She wrote the book used in the class, so she obviously understands the material very well.
Saltsgaver was literally one of my favorite professors and I will be honest I heard a lot of bad things about her but I gave her class a shot and was so glad I did. You work for the grade in her class but I left her class being able to tutor other people and that's how you know you really know the material.
Horrible attitude ! The the class is not bad but her attitude needs help. Class is based off weight average instead of points. So although your points may have you at one grade, you may actually be at another grade. As far as homework she gives you the answer you have to show work. Exams and quizzes are pretty easy if you understand the homework
After taking this class you'll be lucky to have such a hidden gem as a Teacher. Although home work is a must she hands us all the tools that is needed to succeed. after taking this class online for the 2nd time she explained it best using real life examples. make sure you understand the stem-leaf plot, and you'll be well.
Very nice teacher!! I would highly suggest but you must ask questions when needed. Her course is set up very nicely.
Carol is an amazing professor. I thought I was horrible at stats until taking her class. You definitely need to work hard on your homework (she gives homework but its nothing too crazy), take notes, and pay attention in class, but if you do all these things you should have no problem passing with an A. She is hilarious in class, so its fun to go
Very disappointed. Professor Saltsgaver was passive-aggressive towards students in front of the class, which I believe is inappropriate in a leadership setting. Her slideshows are copy-paste of the text. There were questions on the homework that she was unable to answer clearly, she was unable to answer clearly, so other students had to teach.
I have a masters degree and wanted to go back to school for something more marketable. This was a pre-req. The textbook written by her does not clearly explain concepts or how to do the homework, especially towards the end of the semester. Lectures are copy and pasted from textbook. Limited outside resources to explain tough concepts.
She is kind but also really thaugh. All work should be through textbook and her attitude was not that good.
The class is very fast-paced and has a lot of homework. She is a tough grader. There were times I felt the topics were not being explained very well. Most of the time she was nice, but sometimes she was rude.
Very passionate about what she teaches, though material is hard to understand at times. Definitely not the worst math teacher I have ever had, but stay on her good side for sure. She rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but if you stay on top of your work and do all of the extra credit then you will do fine.
refused to give points back on HW for unanswered odd-number problems when she said do only even-number problems If you get a question wrong on HW, quiz, or test, you'll never be told what the correct answer is Impossible to review/study old HW, quizzes or tests unclear textbook definitions and examples hides behind tutors
She is a great professor but a super hard grader. If it isn't how she would write it, it's probably wrong. She also takes off a lot of points for even missing 1/3 of a question. She gives EC from time to time & some opportunities for review. HW is completion grade, so if you don't do it ALL, you'll get a 0. Don't overlook quizzes and activities.
Terrible professor - poor communication, annoyed when asked to explain things you don't understand. Average class grades were given each week and were under 65% every week. Uses textbook written by self and it's awful as well. Do not take a class from Saltgaver, but if you have to, make sure to report her on the end of year survey appropriately.
If you go to class and take notes and pay attention you will do fine. Just do the homework and try you best. She is very understanding and offers tutoring and extra help if you are struggling. I think she was a good teaching and gives a lot of good examples and helps break down the problems.
one of the nicest professors i have ever seen she is so passionate about teaching and really loves her students definitely recommend taking her class but i have to say her hands are tight on grading so you have to put in effort and be PERSICE with your answer if you pay good attention to the lectures and do your homework on time u would get an A
Take this class online. Don't waste the time or money to go in person. She isn't a good professor and if you take it online you will pass with a 98%.
does not care
Do not take
Straight A student pretty much getting C for first time. Not understanding
not even good online. Posted lectures from last semester , rushed due dates at end
A and B student getting very low grade. Beware of the class
Please take this course on online. If you take this course on campus, she will give a lot of assignment from the textbook which is she made. You have to buy this textbook and write everything on your note book and hand it to her every test day. Annoying class.
Don't take
Not caring. Makes you buy the textbook she wrote .
Don't know why her rating is 3. I took her because I thought that was still ok for a professor. But normally professors who don't understand students and don't care have rating of 1
She is very strict and honestly got upset when you didn't understand it right away. She is a very test-heavy grader, and she uses the textbook that she wrote. It is a very difficult class. Especially if you are not good at math.
Throughout this course, Mrs. Saltsgaver has been stubborn and only accepts one way of work. Others and I in the class have struggled with her way and understand it better another way but she will not accept the alternative ways.
Carol is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She is rude, calls you names and will laugh at you. Don't even get me started on the book she wrote. She should be fired and banned from teaching. Switch classes if you have her. WORST.TEACHER.EVER
Usually, I'm not the type of person to just bash teachers cause I believe that they're humans too. But oh my GOSH, I have never met a teacher who is as backhanded, unhelpful and unforgiving as her. Gives Lots of unnecessary hw that looks different from the exams and she expects you to come to class even when having medical issues…
