She speaks jibberish, has extremely random lectures, and erases things seconds after she puts it on the board. She's so soft that I couldn't hear her in the first row. She essentially unavailabe outside of class time. At least her test are easier than Ensley's.
You cannot understand a word she says and she speaks so softly you can't hear her anyway. Her lectures go off in tangents that don't relate to what we're learning and her handwriting is horrible, but she erases notes to quick to copy them anyway. Easier tests than ensley, but nothing learned
God this lady sucks. She is painfully hard to pay attention to and she is hard to understand. Thank goodness her tests are easier than Ensley's.
Organic sucks no matter who you have. Out of all the professors teaching right now Zhang is not only the nicest, but the fairest grader as well. Go to class, keep up with the reading, do all the problems at the end of the chapter and if you're nice to her she will be nice to you.
Possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not teach...at all. The rumor about Zhang being easier than Ensley arose her first semester here when she made her class so easy that she was admonished by administration. She now has extremely difficult tests.Bottom line=if you can teach yourself chemistry, it doesn't matter who you have.

horrible just horrible
Okay, so she might not be the BEST teacher BUT she really wants her class to do well and really makes and effort give you as many extra points as possible! She curved me up about 10pts on each test and boosted me AN ENTIRE LETTER GRADE on my final. Orgo will always be hard. you dont have to go to class, but you will have to teach yourself. shes hot
shes not a very good lecturer. go to every class, write down everything she writes on the board, huge chance thats going to be on the test. do the practice problems, you should do well. after all it is orgo 2
this class is hard, don't believe the rumor that she is easy. her tests are from the book, lecture is completely irrelevant, as well as somewhat incoherent due to her difficulty with english. i went to every class, and i don't think that it was nearly as helpful as doing the practice problems from the book.
This professor is a tricky one. If you can teach yourself stuff from the book on your own, go for it. Her tests are easy and she curves well. But if you need any kind of direction from her, you should take someone else because she is difficult to understand and her notes are impossible to follow.
Contrary to popular belief, Orgo is a pretty easy class. I would also recommend Zhang as a professor.
She's nice enough, but that's not enough to get you through this course. Lectures are pretty incoherant, but I would still go because the test problems are pretty similar to the ones she does in class. She is nearly impossible to find outside of officer hours though, but tries hard for her class to do well. I got a higher grade than I should have
Quite simply: the best (orgo) chem prof. ever. Exams very easy and her final grading scale very fair/reasonable.
She doesn't teach that well. You can really actually teach yourself Orgo I, but you might want to go to class since what's on the board is usually on the exams. Exams are easy in the sense that they are straightforward. There arent any tricks. She curves well too.
BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF. if you can learn organic chemistry by reading the book to yourself, she is the prof to take, you dont have to go to class ever, but if you need any help at all, dont take her. she is a terribly nice woman, but cannot communicate anything let alone chemistry.
Awesome professor. She is a really good teacher, once you get used to her accent. She explains everything completely, and as long as you keep up with the material to SOME degree, you'll be fine. You can't not study and still do well, but its not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Quizzes are merciful. She's fair on the exams too.
Zhang is very knowledgeable in the subject and answer all chemistry questions clearly from heart if you ask. But don't be fooled by her soft voice and demeaner, be prepared to study your butt off for her class!
Great prof, willing to help. Know that you can't wait until the last minute to study! You need to study a little bit everyday so it sinks into your brain. Trust me, I got an A in the class. Some people say they can't understand her. BS! Her English is fine. I would suggest buying the sol. manual, it was very helpful when working problems.
Great professor! Her lectures are very helpful and often fun too! She has this typical asian accent but you will quickly get used to it and enjoy the class thoroughly. She knows everything so well it seems explaining the subjects like a child play to her. Her tests ain't easy but fair, you have to do the practice problems in order to do well.
I'm sure she's a brilliant person but she can barely speak a word of English. Waved away students who came to her office hours, arrives late to class (and holds you there for the difference). She will take points off for frivolous reasons unless you confront her directly. Sadly, she's the "easier" of the two organic chem teachers.
Not a bad teacher, but I prefer to learn from the book. Apparently she's nicer than other teachers w/ the curve. Her tests aren't that hard. The hardest part about orgo is competing with the rest of the class.
Found the course pretty easy. However, I dislike how zhang makes her subject seem like the most important thing ever, with the test reviews (which i never went to) and test nights, 4 hr labs, and mostly attitude. It's not the most important thing, and it's not hard, kthx. I mostly learned from the book in this course, use lectures to reinforce.
there's absolutely no need to go to class, just teach yourself from the book. her tests are for the most part very fair but she does throw some curve balls. if you don't go to her class she probably wont help you but get her old tests and study them before the exams, she tends to reuse a few questions. second semester is much harder than the first.
She's not so great at teaching, but she's really good about curving. I never went back to class after the first day except for quizzes - she's kinda hard to understand, but its to your advantage to attend class, b/c alot of stuff on her tests and quizzes may not be in the book but were probably covered in lecture. Overall an extremely easy A.
As far as orgo goes shes probably the best teacher you can get at tulane. the class is definitely not easy as its orgo but if you read then go to class and keep up with it then youll do fine. shes not that hard to understand if you read before you go to class and have a general idea what she is talking about. shes a very nice lady and tests fair
Oh Zhang. How shall I describe thee? You are somewhat tough to understand during lecture. Lectures are full of information and you move quite quickly. One can study from the book and not go to lecture, but one will miss out on random reactions/substances/ideas that you emphasize for test day. This is a tough class. Study a lot or get over it.
Professor Zhang is excellent at explaining reaction mechanisms and the chemistry stuff. She does it with chalk and blackboard which is much more helpful than watching Powerpoint presentations. Her class was intense and she pushed you to study hard. But I actually found Org very interesting and liked it after taking this course.
ohh carol...she's actually not as bad of a teacher as i expected and i do feel that she tests pretty fair. i'd suggest going to class as lots of her test questions come directly from the notes. also, try to get old tests from upperclassmen and be prepared to study hard. i got an A- first semester and an A second semester so it is totally doable
Very good at explaining resonance, orbitals, and reaction mechanisms. Terrible at explaining mass spectroscopy, IR . . etc.
Dr. Zhang is the best orgo teacher at Tulane hands down. She is incredibly fair and curves really nicely. She wants you to learn, and if you come to class, work the problems assigned, you can do really well. I would definitely take her again 100 times over.
Dr. Zhang is the best option for Orgo at Tulane. It's going to be hard even though she teaches pretty well. My advice: go to class and take good notes. Lots of people skip her class and try to teach themselves, but you cannot teach yourself Orgo. She'll use her examples in class as test questions. Anything higher than a C+ will take great effort.
She was a really good professor actually. She doesn't spend a lot of time on nomenclature except in Organic I, so if you don't like it, don't worry about it too much. The best way to do well is to study the mechanisms, which she works out on the board (not projector/powerpoint. Attending class is a must -- test questions are often example problems.
Had Zhang both semesters, definitely not a bad choice for Orgo, although it will be challenging for all. Not as generous as earlier in her career. A lot of people do very poorly in her class & the competition is great. Class not mandatory, but you will need to memorize the book to do well on tests. Don't take Orgo unless you are truly committed
Had Zhang for a month and it did not go well. Difficult to understand, goes very fast in class, and overall made organic chem even more difficult to learn. If you take the class, make sure to attend and take good notes and keep your full attention for the whole class or else you won't understand the thing. I switched out but others really liked her
Orgo is tough but she makes it tougher... tried going to see her for help and she was entirely useless and very rude about it. She also is very confusing to follow in class because she jumps all over the place. She also gives barely any partial credit on tests which is an issue. also she is very bad at ending class on time!
Doesn't give a lot of partial credit. Asked her to help me figure out what my grade was and she laughed at me and then accused me of not keeping track. Better pay attention and focus the entire class; she is neigh on unintelligible otherwise. She was rude to several other classmates when they went to her for help. I took it to graduate and regret.
HARD GRADER. Partial credit is a nono. Getting old tests DOES NOT help much anymore esp #3 (she got in trouble for making them too similar so now they aren't). Tips: 1. READ THE CHAPTER BEFORE CLASS, it's essential to your success. 2. GO TO CLASS, a lot of her test questions come straight from her lectures 3. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE TEST 3!
ORGO is a very difficult course no matter what but Zhang made this class 100x more hard. Her english is horrible and nobody understands a thing she says. She tests you on things you do not go over in class and that are not in the book. You must TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING, you learn nothing in class. She does not respond to emails. just no.
Overall not a bad class. Orgo is hard, definitely some adjustment issues to the new book, but overall Dr. Zhang cares about her students and offers a generous curve.
She is hard and not someone who expresses herself well. This is bad because she's teaching a hard subject. She is terrible
Carol has grown on me after a year. She's difficult to understand at first but you'll get her accent soon enough. It is almost essential to read the textbook before you go to class (the textbook is great!) so you understand the lecture better. Zhang has good intentions and wants her students to succeed. The tests are difficult but manageable.
Her accent is very understandable, and she's truly a funny/nice lady. Uses the blackboard and not powerpoint, so you actually get to see the mechanism drawn out step by step. Yes, Orgo was hard, but overall she made it manageable. The only time you might run into trouble is during office hours if she thinks you aren't studying/keeping up.
She is pretty nice most of the time and actually quite good at explaining and simplifying tough concepts. Tests can be tricky but usually just follow the notes. I would recommend trying to read the textbook before going to class as it makes what she is talking about much clearer and easier to understand. Definitely a good option for orgo.
test questions directly from notes..... GO TO CLASS. overall VERY manageable class and an easier option than Jay or Grayson. The work you put into it is vital
This class is pretty hard because it covers a lot of material, but, if you go to class regularly and do the assigned problems, you should be fine. Zhang has really clear expectations for the class, and she gives a lot of hints about what to study. She is also really nice if you go into office hours unless you are asking for points back.
Zhang is tough if you have a loaded course schedule/don't want to put the time in. Read the chapters AHEAD of class, do the practice problems, write down every example she gives in class, and make use of her office hours. She is super sweet if you are prepared and know where you need help. For me, needed 15 hours of studying for each test
Graded on 4 tests and a final; you can drop 1 test. She takes the final seriously into account; it can save you or really mess you up if you do badly. Her practice problems from class will be on the test. Do all the assigned problems. Try to get old tests if you can. If you put in the work, rework your notes, you'll do fine. Her accent isn't bad.
Lectures start off good at the beginning of the semester but get very hard to follow as the content gets harder. Goes at a very fast pace and does not make sure the class understands what's happening on the board. Make sure you read the chapters before class and master the practice problems. Tests are pretty okay, and the curve is decent.
Orgo is hard with any prof. Zhang isnt the BEST lecturer but she isnt awful either. Reading before class is very helpful and she teaches her own recitations which is SO great! Lots of work is required for this class, but if you do the work and pay attention lectures make sense. Tests are very fair, based on what we are learning! She is also funny!
I understand that ORGO itself is hard but Zhang makes it even harder by being a terrible teacher. She goes through the materials super fast in an unorganized manner.
Average teacher at best. It is difficult to understand what she is saying and she'll go right through certain subjects even though the majority of class doesn't understand it (maybe its just me). If you have old tests, the tests are easy to predict but her final is 1 of the hardest tests I've ever taken. Let's you drop a test. She pretty wack tho.
I believe zhang is a great teacher once you get used to her thick accent. People greatly dislike her, but if you attend all of her classes and keep up in the textbook, you have a good chance of succeeding. Your grade is solely based on we tests, which are almost always fairly straight forward with not many curveballs.
Probably the easiest option for orgo, but very difficult/labor intensive nonetheless. Everything can be learned from the textbook which is very solid, but she uses examples from class on the tests. Tends to be less shocking to students who had one of the confusing/difficult gen chem professors
Her lectures are terrible- she makes easy concepts confusing and her heavy accent makes it even harder to get anything out of her class. The textbook is your greatest resource if you want to learn; luckily, the it is one of the most well-written textbooks I've ever read. Old exams are also very valuable. Attendance not required if you have them.
Extremely insensitive to students, and believes that office hours aren't for personalized help (then what are they for?). Doesn't provide time for questions and will move quickly through concepts without checking to see if people understand. Tests are nothing like the book problems, and she copies many problems form her lecture notes.
Went to her office hours and felt shamed. She makes me feel stupid. She doesn't answer questions and ignores hands in class. ALWAYS read the textbook. Her test questions come almost directly from lecture, but she often leaves reactions incomplete. Don't take her class.
Goes very fast in lectures, so difficult to keep up. Sometimes hard to understand. If you are not good at self-teaching, do not take her. You will need to learn mostly everything on your own from the textbook. As long as you put in a lot of work, you should be fine. Show you care, study a lot, and ask for help. It's hard, but doable.
Going to class was a huge waste of time because she did a terrible job of explaining the material. The tests were a lot harder than anything covered in the textbook or in class, so the only way to do well was to look at tests from previous years. She makes it very clear that she thinks you're very stupid if you ask her anything. Awful.
Prof Zhang has a very strong accent and speaks quickly during her lectures, thus very hard to follow in class. When I went to see her during office hours she made me feel stupid for asking things and then proceeded to describe the topic as "common sense"... the class was basically entirely self taught and the only way to do well is not take her.
Hardest class I have ever taken, doesnt help when the professor is unclear in class and treats office hours as an opportunity to show how poorly you are doing in the course. The only way I was able to pass the course was to teach myself entirely from the text, sometimes even going to class was bad for understanding material, she assumes everything
Take this class if you know how to self-teach.
Zhang's lectures are really disorganized, but it's worth going to get the examples she puts on the board. They are often repeated verbatim on the exams. The class requires a huge amount of individual effort and without self teaching skills, it would be really difficult to succeed. Luckily the textbook is great.
Completely disengaging, it is puzzling that Tulane year in and year out has her teach such a difficult and demanding Chemistry course. Dr. Zhang has a brilliant mind, but her teaching style is simply not conducive to the rigor of the class. She presents examples in class used on tests, apart from that it is 100% on you to teach yourself
Just an FYI to anyone reading this who sees reviews saying her tests are straightforward! She made them much more difficult this year (and VERY different from the last few years' tests) - ask anyone who took her in 2019/2020. She is a horrible lecturer and now her tests are basically impossible to do well on, along with no partial credit at all.
Zhang is very sweet and wants her students to do well, but she is very inaccessible over email. Her tests are grounded in the textbook concepts (problems are not complex, but you need to know everything very well to do well in the class). She lets you drop 1/3 quizzes. I personally preferred my orgo I class bc it was smaller-- this class is huge.
No partial credit on exams. Exams barely have anything to do with her lecture. Doesnt answer emails ever. Awful lectures. No drop exam
The only way to pass this class is to read and truly know the entire book, but the textbook is actually really helpful. Go to class to make sure u know what she wants u to. This class is hard but if you put in a few hours each day and intensely study for the exams, you'll make it just fine. It's not impossible, but you have to be dedicated.
this class is hard obv but Zhang is a good choice. she uses examples straight from lecture on tests so go to class and take good notes. the textbook is really good at explaining things when Zhang isn't. read the textbook and do. the. practice. problems. Zhang is actually super sweet and it's not hard to find her tests from previous years
Zhang is a nice person, but she's not a good teacher. You really have to read the textbook to understand the concepts, and do the assigned practice problems. Going to lecture helps because she says what you need to focus on, and some of her in class examples are on tests. FYI there's no drop exam.
I found Dr. Zhang's lectures to be completely useless. However, the the textbook for her class is incredibly well-written and very helpful. Just be prepared to literally read the whole textbook and do every practice problem. VERY time consuming. Get old tests if you can, it's the best way to study, she reuses questions a lot.
Only point of lecture is to write practice problems she might use on the test, otherwise completely useless. The textbook is great and will be your teacher. Exams were much harder than ones from previous years, and very little partial credit was given because they were open note. No drop exam but you get one drop quiz. Curve was great at the end.
Professor Zhang is a solid professor overall. Attend class and recitations because she will literally give students questions she will be asking on the test. Also, use the book and old exams to study. This class takes work but Professor Zhang is very clear about what she wants her students to know and study.
Dr. Zhang's exams reflect literally nothing that was ever talked about in class and the only way to get a good grade is to be an expert in organic chemistry. There is no partial credit or drop exam. Stay far away from Dr. Zhang.
I've never had a worse experience. Has no sympathy, no remorse, and certainly does not know how to teach. Going to class is helpful but good luck actually understanding anything she scribbles on the board. Does not reply to emails and does not answer any questions you ask her during office hours. If you ask a ? in person, expect no answer.
Had her for Orgo II in the late summer semester. She's the best organic chemistry professor but that doesn't mean much. Lectures worked through tougher material and problems, but you're expected to read/make notes on the textbook prior to class. You get 1 drop quiz, but no other professors had quizzes, only exams. Hardest class I've had to take.
She is difficult to understand, which makes paying attention or learning anything in lecture very difficult. She is extremely overworked by the chem department and thus has little ability to give extra help or assistance. But tests can be predictable and she'll recycle questions. Still a hard class, you have to learn it all by reading the textbook
Worst professor ever. Goes slow but somehow goes really fast. Barely speaks English so you can't understand her. Literally, the worst professor I have ever had and that is saying something. Stay away from this woman at all costs I promise you. Pete on the other hand is a great professor.
Orgo sucks and all the profs aren't good, but she's better than Pete. Has a nice curve at the end. Has 2 tests and a final with no drop, 4 quizzes with 1 drop, and 1 assignment. Her test/quiz questions are commonly similar to examples she does in class. She can be funny at times but the lecture isn't fun, probs because it's chemistry.
Orgo is always hard, but Prof. Zhang's lectures were hard to follow and rarely made sense. The tests resemble some things from the lecture, so make sure to write everything down. Go to SI sessions. Try to get ahold of old exams; she recycles a lot of questions, especially for the final. You won't know your grade until the end of the semester.
most cruel professor and unaccomodating professor tulane. easier tests, but screwed if you are ever sick or need to make up ANY of the quizzes or exams. teaching is not even good, her only redeeming factor is the fact that her questions are predictable. base your learning on pete's videos.
Worst professor ever! Gave barely any partial credit. Once I got the mechanism completely right and drew the wrong bond in the very last step (careless error) and gave no credit. Very unapproachable and does not respond to emails. Can barely understand her. I went to every single class, spent hours outside of class, and still did not do well. AVOID
doesn't teach at all and then quizzes and exams have nothing to do with what we have done in class
No drop test, one drop quiz/assignment out of 4. Uses old questions or lecture questions. Lectures are a mess and useless except for problems. Super unclear curve, hope it works for me... Take Cortez or whoever else is teaching. If in Zhang get a tutor, go to SI, read the textbook, and memorize old exams. She used every recitation, test or not.
Orgo is hard. Don't know what to say. I thought she was pretty fair, a poor lecturer but who isn't in the chem department here. Go to the SI sessions, do your practice problems, and pray.
Find old tests of hers very little partial credit
God genuinely what can I say. 4 quizes/hw with a drop, 3 tests, and a final. SIs are spectacular and I would've failed without them. The grading was clear, willing to explain the point deductions, we can bring 6 pages of notes to the final. Curve should be amazing but you can't really guess your final grade, it's basically thoughts and prayers
Not a great teacher and hard to understand. Good curve but expect to teach everything to yourself. Take another professor if you want to do well. Never received a C in my life I am humbled by her class. She wants students to do well but that class was a struggle.
impossible to understand. no point in attending lectures, she doesn't say anything that you can't find in the book. It is imperative to attend SI sessions to learn anything. Meeting with her during office hours will get you more confused. STAY AWAY!!!!
Worst professor at Tulane. She writes examples on the board with little to no explanation and goes off on unrelated tangents. The exams are brutal. The low on one exam was a 1/100. The curve definitely helps (46 = D+) but almost everyone I know failed every exam. Take literally anyone else.
genuinely the worst professor at tulane. went from being a straight A student to getting 60s. can't lecture, does random problems on the board that she'll change halfway through, goes off on unrelated tangents, is impossible to listen to, and EXTREMELY harsh with partial credit. got one step wrong on a 24 pt question and got 9 pts. TAKE ANYONE ELSE
Zhang gets a bad rep around here, but I took her Organic Chemistry I and II and would choose her time and time again. Although she is kind of all over the place during her lectures, she genuinely cares about the success of her students. Her exams are very similar to years past, so it's easy to predict them and do well. Go to SI sessions and study!!
Dr. Zhang is the worst professor I've ever had. SI sessions and private tutors are crucial for success in Zhang. The curve does help a lot, but her lectures are unorganized and not digestible. I switched to Cortez for orgo 2 and she's an absolute dream, avoid Dr. Zhang!
I have mixed feelings about her bc the only reason I understood concepts was bc I got a tutor. You have to read the textbook to understand stuff. Class isn't mandatory but highly recommend going bc she puts stuff from class on exams. Do the suggested problems. She reuses questions/question types from past assessments. You get cheat sheet on final.
Genuinely one of the worst employees at this school. I don't understand how she acts the way she does in class and blames poor student outcomes on the students. If it is between taking her (because you couldn't get a competent prof) or being behind on your degree BE BEHIND. I stg if i could go back I would simply not have taken chem this sem.
Literally cannot understand what she talks about and it's super hard to pay attention. Difficult to read handwriting and often goes on tangents. No material to help on tests, bad at giving out partial credit. Overall, just a terrible teacher/lecturer. Take anyone but her. She is also known to be mean when asking her about anything.
Zhang gets a bad rep bc people don't realize Orgo is a weed out class for a reason. I got an A before the curve by going to lectures, building a relationship with her, reading the textbook and taking notes before class, and absolutely spamming practice problems the week before the test. I didn't bother w SIs, their answers are wrong half the time.
STAY AWAY! Tulane is notorious for bad profs: Zhang is the worst TEACHER I have ever had. I would say she is probably sweet, but she gets angry when you ask anything. Her English is very poor, and cannot pronounce half of the things she lectures about. You might as well wait to take Ochem w/ a better prof... do yourself a favor and take Cortez.
The class was awful and further degraded in quality because, in her 30 years of tenure teaching at Tulane University, she is still unable to speak clear English. She uses her recitation period to teach because she cannot finish her normal lectures on time. Stay away from Carol Zhang for your mental health. She is also passive-aggressive
Absolutely the most overhated professor at Tulane. When choosing professors that teach premed classes, do take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. Most negative reviews are because people did not apply themselves and chose to blame Dr. Zhang. Her English is also fine. She's funny, will help you out, and her lectures made Orgo very intuitive.
Carol herself is a great person. The class is extremely hard and covers a ton of material in a short amount of time, but it is ultimately up to you how hard you are willing to try. All the resources you need are accessible outside of class, and textbook and lecture slides help tremendously. Just cause the class is hard dont mean she is a bad prof.
Her lectures are a little confusing and she doesn't test on everything that she teaches, but the SI's will help you out and tell you what you need to know. Exams are not that bad, she repeats a lot of her exam content from year to year so if you can get your hands on a past exam you should be set. You get a huge cheat sheet for the final.
While I understand why people may have an issue with this class, I think Dr. Zhang did not do a terrible job of delivering the information we needed, especially for exams. Orgo is fundamentally a tough class for pre-meds, so most reviews will be bad for this class, and Dr. Zhang's is no different. Exams are easy if you study.
I think a lot of people don't like Dr. Zhang because it is difficult to understand her. I admit the lectures were confusing, but orgo is an inherently difficult subject. The SI's were godsends and very accurately predicted what would be on the exam and quizzes. If you do a lot of practice outside of class and go to SI sessions, you'll be fine.
Lectures aren't that good but tests and quizzes are super predictable and SI sessions are amazing. Spam practice questions and go to SI sessions and you'll be fine.
Prof. Zhang's lectures can be hard to follow, but attending SI sessions and using resources like Unstuckstudy for study prep makes a difference. The exams are tough, but the curve helps. If you're willing to put in the work, you can succeed in this class.
terrible, doesn't care about her students, her lectures are impossible to follow. she makes this class 10x harder than it needs to be. I took this class with another (better) teacher - Dr. Cortez, and the education quality was night and day.
Zhang was the best to ever do it. A class that truly assess a students ability to understand not just the topics taught but the nuances therein.
The people complaining did not put enough work into the class to create a valid review. Zhang's class curates critical thinking and pushes students to think outside the box.
Class is easy if you actually try. Mickey mouse chemistry.
Zhang is an acquired taste IMO. I took her for ochem 1 & 2. Its a matter of studying ALOT, using office hours (underrated hack for the class tbh), and staying ambitious for your goals. The class tests your ability to remain on a path for success. She is not the WORST, but you learn a lot about yourself through her (+ maybe some orgo).
