She is an intersting teacher but very dedicated and will always help you out if you need it.
I have really enjoyed her class. She explains everything answers all questions, and is always ready to help you on a paper or what ever you have to do. I think i will try to take her next semester :)
Dr. Mattord is really passionate for the classes she teaches. Everything is very clear and she is always happy to help with anything you might need. It's impossible to not get an A in her class if you show up and take her advise on writing. I would definatly reccomend her to anyone who wants a good english grade.
Dont take her class
Not an easy A. You will be lucky to get a C in the class. Quiz everyday on reading, must attended class, two 8 page research papers on the most stupid things ever. 3 more "side" papers. Grades hard. The class is also a lecture style. She only answers so many questions bc the class is so hard and she knows no one understands it. Do not take her!!!!
Good luck with this class. I am not one for English, but Dr. Mattord is definately a difficult professor. I dropped this class 3 weeks in. We had two 9+ page papers due about a very hard topic, along with quizzes and other essays. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easier english 1101.
Dr. Mattord is tough but you will learn SO much from her. 2 essays, 2 research papers, weekly quizzes. She is extremely knowledgeable on the writing process. A MUST take class!
As long as you come to class and pay attention to what she says then you shouldn't have a problem passing her class. I took the Hybrid version and it was so easy I forgot I was taking English at times! I recommend her if you want to really learn what college professors are looking for in essays
Good Teacher. She knows what shes talking about. Some assignments are unclear, but she is always available for help on assignments and essays.
I got an A in this class. It is tough but if you work hard you will learn a lot. I believe her class taught me to write far better than before which has made all essays in all other classes much easier. I always get As on essays now.
She is TOUGH! you have to work your butt off in this class. If you do not like writing I recommend you do not take her. She grades really hard on your papers which is majority of your grade. She gives out 10 question quiz weekly over reading and 5-6 papers to writing including research paper. Be prepared before you take her class.
Not a hybrid class but sure feels like it. She is very nice and loves to help. I didn't think she graded too hard. Gives you the grade to deserve. Going to class is a drag because she just lectures and its boring but its the english department's policy to have mandatory attendance. Not easy but not too hard. Effort will be reflected in your grade.
If you want an easy class or an easy A do NOT take her class. However, if you complete all of your work and work hard an A is possible. Rare but can happen. Directions, due dates, and expectation can often be confusing. Asking questions can often be nerve racking because she will look at you like you're stupid. Consider seriously before registering
Even though I ended up with an A in this class, I had to work my butt off to do so. If you do the work, the essay and proposal corrections that are offered, and maybe suck up a little you will end up with an A in this class. The text book is "required," but I managed an A without the book. There is a lot of work for this class, consider carefully!
Terribly strict grading. I'm not even sure what she wants out of essays because I got a 65% on my first essay, but I got a 5 on the AP Language and Composition exam and a perfect score on the ACT writing. Also this is a hybrid course and there are a lot of assignments to keep up with (approximately 3-4 per week.)I wish I dropped out when I could.
Very strict grading. Hybrid class- 3 page essay due every week. She can make you feel dumb easily. She doesn't grade as strictly on assignments other than essays. She gives extra credit opportunities.
I made a 4.0 my first semester AND writing is my strong suit. She tears your essays apart but doesn't write anything helpful or how to fix the things she marks through. She is picky about vocabulary in your papers and grades SO strict. She does a lot of talking about nothing. and she says "ya" after every sentence. I do not recommend her.
She tears your essays apart, and is unclear about what she wants in her essays. There's also book quizzes like every class. She's a nice person, but I would not recomend her.
This lady is CRAZY, she is unclear about everything, grades way too strictly, and will make you feel like less of a person. She is honestly the worst prof. I have ever encountered. She will fail you for knowing too much, but will also fail you for not knowing enough. DONT TAKE HER
She honestly tries her best to teach you the way she wants you to write. You just have to adapt to what she wants in your essays. I would have done better when if I tried harder and didn't take the 8am. She's kind person but if your not willing to try in the class, don't take her.
Dr. Mattord is knowledgeable about her class. Nice lady. She gives you exactly what you need to succeed. Must learn to write in the specific way she wants to do well. class was not very stressful as long as you adapt to her writing style. She is always willing to help, and she can tell who wants to succeed in her class and strives to help them most.
English has never been my best subject but Dr. Carola did a great job in teaching the course. If you follow the directions and simple outlines she gives for writing the essays, you will make an easy A.
This lady will tell you your paper is good in peer review, or during office hours, but will then grade unreasonably harsh and fail you for no apparent reason. She also has a way of making you feel stupid for asking questions, or not understanding concepts. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Good teacher. She explains exactly how she wants the paper in class and gives you time to write it during class. As long as you are on time with the quizzes and write the paper the way she wants it, you will get an A. Take her!
I received a poor grade on my first essay. Yes, she is strict on grading but she will make you a better writer. I usually made A's/B's in prior classes, but I now realize how terrible of a writer I was beforehand. She's amazing and really helpful if you go see her during office hours. Easy if you put in effort, you'll learn to be a better writer.
12 Online quizzes using the text book. Professor is nice and willing to help. Attendance is very important to her, and there are two 5 page papers due. She does give you a study guide for the midterm and final.
Dr. Mattord is an excellent professor. She WANTS you to succeed in becoming a better writer. She will teach you methods you will use in all of your classes (that require papers). Tips: Attend all classes, read ahead, participate in class dicussions (she is not judgemental), & follow rubric. I repeated 1102 glad I took her.
She grades super harshly. She told some students their rough drafts were good yet some of them would still receive a failing grade on the final draft? And she is crazy about cell phones. I really don't recommend her.
She is not a very good professor she is unclear about what she wants and wont give you any advice, she will tell you that your paper is good in your rough draft and when you turn in your final copy you receive a failing grade. she grades to harsh
I do not recommend this professor. When you ask her a question, she responds with "do you have your book?" She expect you to look up the answer even when she knows the answer. She also talks really quietly sometimes. Make sure you read the chapters in the text book because she gives online chapter quizzes. There are no tests, only essays.
This is one of those people who I have no idea what inspired them to be a teacher. Not helpful at all, and quite mean to be honest. Doesn't pick favorites, because she hates everyone. Crazy about cell phones, and cares way too much about a required freshman English course. Do not recommend her at all.
This teacher grades way too harsh for this class, she says your paper cannot be more than 4 pages but no less than three and you turn in 3 complete pages she takes off points. She does all the research and you have to use her sources because she does not want you to think on your own, she wants you to use the textbook which is horribly written.
I was nervous reading the other ratings for Professor Mattord prior to taking her class. Although she is not necessarily approachable, she is very structured and organized: lecture, rough draft, peer review, and turn it in and move on. She gives you time to work on everything in class and as long as you utilize her office hours you will succeed!
Good teacher. Grades a bit harsh, but won't fail you at all. My friend got high C's and he loosely put his essays together the day before. Lots of class time to work on rough draft, comp plans, and peer reviews. She reviews rough draft before you submit next time for grade. Need textbook for easy, online, take-home quizzes.
Dr. Mattord is dry and a bit boring, but very very helpful. She gives you plenty of time to write your papers, does a peer review and edits them herself for every one before you turn your final draft in. Grades a bit harsh, but still a good class.
Takes attendance. DO NOT TAKE. She is one of the worst professors i have ever encountered. She is very hard to understand and does not know how to properly lead students. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She never makes any sense. You will be so confused after every class period. You will never make an A on your paper it is impossible. She nit picks at everything. She will literally waste like 15 mins staring at the class if no one answers her questions. You will be completely lost at least 90% of the time.
Very boring teacher, i would rather drag my teeth against concrete then be in her class. Very nit picky with everything. Harsh grader.
I hate to give negative feedback, but I had to drop this class. All the reviews that I should have listened to were dead on accurate. Confusing, unclear, and far too nit picky. Treats you as if you are an English major. I dont have time for that. Class avg was a C
I couldn't get into any other English class except Professor Mattord's class and her ratings scared me a lot. However, after taking her this semester, I can say, yes she is extremely confusing, but she really does mean well. She is there for you if you ever need help. She grades fairly tough, but if you work pretty hard, you will be fine.
Very clear instuctions. She wants you to succeed and will meet outside of office hours. There are 3 3-4 pg reading responses, a few online homework quizzes, and a 6 pg research paper. I highly suggest the hybrid class. Class isn't that difficult, I wrote most of the papers the day before and got A's. Lectures are long but helpful.
she's a weird lady but she does mean well. if you get on her good side and go to her for help, SHE WILL HELP YOU. she's one of those professors that wants you to do well and succeed. reading quizzes, two research papers, 2 exams (midterm and final), attendance grade.
She takes her title very seriously. She only has 4 essays but they are all pretty unclear and the peer review is even graded harshly! Her lectures were very "in your face", she waits until students respond when having a class discussion, meaning she will literally wait all class for a correct answer. Avoid if you want an easy B, forget an A.
Professor Mattord cares about you and your grade and is always willing to help you. Two research papers (5 pages) but get combined into one grade. Online quizzes but open note and fairly easy. Readings but they're interesting and you talk about them in class. Mid-term and final exam but gives you study guide. Great professor would take again.
She kicks you out of class if you do not bring hard copies of your papers for peer review and gives you a zero so that's not fun and she also grades very harshly. She is obviously interested in the students and is willing to help and is definitely knowledgeable on the subject but the papers are so hard to get an A on.
Dr. Mattord is a very quirky woman. I think she tries to help but she tends to get side tracked and not finish a list of 'characteristics' that you are expected to know for the test. Loves group work. She will practically fail a paper for small mistakes. She grades for spelling too, so know your words going into a test! Don't know how I got an A.
She confused me because she said, "I know you're not English majors" at the beginning of the course, then proceeded to treat us and grade us like we were English majors. Her lectures are tough to follow because there's no powerpoint. Show up and pay attention because all of the midterm and final comes from the lecture.
VERY HARD GRADER. Great person. Very helpful, especially if she can see you're trying. Go to office hours and she will be more lenient. Notes on papers make NO sense and she doesn't explain well.
Even though Dr. Mattord is sometimes a tough grader, she gives detailed feedback and is very clear about what she expects. If you put forth an honest effort and turn in quality writing, you will get a good grade in the class. Also, she's really nice and approachable!
This is an easy A unless you're lazy. Requires 2 anthology books that arent that expensive. Read from those books and take open book online quizzes that are super easy. Only 1 day of lecturing, the other 2 days are live readings or presentations. Kind of boring but an easy class
I took this class as part of university requirements. I ended up learning a lot of useful information about writing and writing styles. The professor knows the topic extremely well. If you can, buy the writing references textbook. It includes vital information you will use for years when writing college papers. Don't procrastinate your papers
She is fair, doesn't sway on her policies. Dr. Mattord was always willing to help and provided good feedback on the papers, there were only 2. Tests are difficult, she gets her questions from all the resources she gives, but if you study then you should be fine. Show up to class, group work on Wednesdays matter.
She was alright but got pretty irritating after the first month or two. Not a hard class, a few papers and easy quizzes taken directly from the book.
Very friendly professor and an easy class, she makes the work as easy as possible while still making you think a little.
Gives you plenty of excused absences for the semester but attendance is still mandatory. Lectures aren't torture because she makes it fun and asks questions. Only four 3-page essays for the course and the last one is your final. A couple of quizzes on a chapter you read in a textbook but don't use the book besides that. Pretty easy A if participate
Dr. Mattord is a great professor. She doesn't put up wth any crap or nonsense - phones are strictly prohibited - but she gives great feedback on all assignments and it's apparent she wants her students to succeed. Class consists of four papers, a handful of quizzes based on the chapter readings (you can pass these w/out reading) and participation.
I think she is a fine teacher, sometimes. There are times where she is very clear on what she wants us to do, and then there are the times when you get lost. It wasn't just me that had this issue with her too, most of my classmates were in the same boat as me. She is lecture heavy, and it does get boring. She wouldn't be my first choice.
Don't. Can get an A with her, but it's miserable. Really bad feedback, only on half the paper before she gets tired of it. Quizzes weekly. One big research paper - she'll tear apart your audience/question everything. One personal narrative. 3 response papers (If you're lucky, she'll make them discussion posts). If you put up with her can get A or B
Professor Mattord is a very serious person. She takes her class very seriously. Lots of work but not too difficult. Cant slack off in this class. She may come across as rude but she is helpful outside of class. Not terrible but not amazing.
If you struggle in English class I highly recommend taking her classes as you will leave her class knowing more or having learned a new skill. She gives her expectations clearly and if you follow them you shall receive your proper credit.
She has a lot of passion for her subject and really makes things easy to understand. She also makes her students feel comfortable coming to her. Overall great class.
The most unorganized professor you will ever meet. No structure to her class. Lectures are all over the place and her train of thought is extremely hard to follow. Very unclear with expectations and honestly talks about nonsense in every class. Very hard to pass and I have always done well in English/Literature.
I'm surprised she has an average rating... She's definitely a top tier teacher! All the tests are straightforward and based off her lectures/readings. We have group discussions (participation pts) and easy quizzes every week. There is 1 research project in addition to the tests, but it's very doable. She's very knowledgeable and sweet! Ec availab.
She is disrespectful at times, but overall a decent teacher. She definitely knows her stuff, but she gets off on rambles throughout her very lengthy, boring lectures. Her quizzes are online and easy, but there are a lot of them, and the discussion posts are also easy. There is group work every week and the tests are a little tricky.
She's a really caring Professor, who is very easy to contact, and she does respond quickly. Attendance is mandatory, and she is pretty clear on that. Come to class and take good notes, she gives extra credit, but it requires going to museums.
Make sure you do your online quizzes and discussion threads! Don't respond to classmates with b.s., because she can smell b.s. from a mile away. Her class isn't hard if you do what she says, fall behind though and you'll get swamped.
Definitely keep up with weekly discussions boards and small 10 question lock down quizzes that you have two chances to take. It's really not that hard of a class there is some group work and extra credit opportunity, definitely get the textbooks. she is quick to respond to emails. study her study guides for the test and you'll do fine
I took this class online for the summer 2020 semester. As an incoming freshman, I was scared. Dr. Mattord is a real gem! She is very sweet, knows what she is talking about, and my entire class was based off of Disney. I would definitely recommend her! I took her online, so I don't know how she would be for actual lectures.
Prof Mattord was disrespectful at times, but she is a good teacher. 3 exams and a final and she can be gracious on grading the open ended questions. She uses a sign-in sheet before class. Lots of reading between 2 textbooks and lots of lecturing, in-class discussion, and D2L discussions.
Professor Mattord was decent. She answered emails pretty quick, and the course was centered around Disney. We had weekly quizzes from the textbook though and a few assignments due per week. 1 research paper. Pretty boring, but the assignments werent hard.
I really enjoyed this class. All Tests are open note including midterm and final. Class was mandatory. Records lectures. A lot of reading but the readings weren't that long. She responds fast to emails. 1 quiz a week which was very easy. We had an assigned group for the whole semester that we did assignments together which was very helpful .
Her assignments were pretty easy; she was 4 written exams, they were easy to pass if you looked at your book and powerpoints! While her assignments were easy, she, as a professor, was pretty stale. She also expected everyone to be so heavily invested in world literature while having more important classes to worry about!!!
worst professor I've taken. pretty rude. maintained an A throughout the entire semester (never once asked for an extension) but turned in the final 5 minutes late (yes, actually) and she gave me an F (0%, which is 1/3rd our grade) which made me fail the class until I disputed the grade. the assignments themselves are extensive but very manageable.
The tests were take home and had a week to do it. If you read the texts, you will do just fine. Quizzes once a week and group work once a week. Not a difficult grader at all. There was one research paper and 3 tests. Nothing in the class was difficult, just do all of the work on time and you should be able to get an A.
She is super sweet and understanding. The class is very straight forward and easy. She helps you with essays and the quizzes are simple if you do the reading every other week. This class is an essay class, but it's super easy because she lays it all out for you and does many participation grades to help.
Online quizzes over textbook chapters for hw plus a few other assignments. The quizzes are easy, and you get two tries. Attendance counts as 15% of your grade. In class she has you work in groups a lot. 6-page research paper & a project due at the end of the semester. No exceptions for late work. Final is 5 questions & open notes.
If you show up to class you will for sure pass with a high grade. Make sure not to miss a single class and you will do fine. She helps with essays in class.
Dr. Mattord's class is easy if you show up, listen, and participate. There are four essays and an open response final that is open note. She gives wonderful feedback on every essay and loves when you interact in her class. Easy quizzes each week and she gives you time to work on your essays in class.
Gave us four essays over the semester and some quizzes from each of the textbooks. Buy the textbooks from the bookstore so you have it and don't have the wrong one. Lectures are mostly focused on the structure of each type of essay and they can be boring but have a lot of good info. Will be more than happy to answer any other questions you have
This professor is not good. She gets angry for the smallest things, and I found her hard to approach. Let's just say if you take her class make sure to staple the peer reviews or else you'll get an angry earful about it.
Professor Mattord has high expectations for the class. She can be nice, but if you aren't a good student, she doesn't have time for it. She is a tough grader, but outlines what she expects for the final paper and project. During class, if you have questions about your paper, she is more than happy to look at it.
It takes true effort to fail this class!! She is extremely enthusiastic about Literature. She assigns group work every week and there is 1 discussion and quiz each week. Each quiz gets 2 attempts, but they are extremely easy. There is 1 term paper, which is easy as well. Definitely take her if you can!!
I LOVE PROFESSOR MATTORD!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is so kind and her class is very fun. Our essay topics are interesting and fun! She grades fairly and sets you up for success. Good feedback on essays. Weekly quizzes based on the textbook, but not difficult at all. You should definitely take the course, and I will be taking her next semester too! <<<
She gives quizzes and a group discussion every Wed. Attendance is mandatory its part of your grade. There is a discussion post due every Sunday as well. Must get both books you'll need them to pass! There is a midterm and final plus one paper. Anything a day late is a 3 letter grade deduction! Worst communicator ever and can't explain well enough!
Very easy class. It would've been much more enjoyable if the teacher wasn't insane. I MEAN IT when I say, do not take her class. You won't want to sit in a class with her, trust me. I honestly thought about reporting her because of the things she has done. Sadly I can't type stories on here cause there's a word count.
this professor is extremely passionate about literature. however, she does not see literature as a creative process which makes her an extremely subjective grader. do not participate in class too often because she will piss you off. she will cut you off during your sentence and say "no" or "wrong"
this poor old woman does not know how to teach English. if you cross her she will give you a bad grade. she also does not grant you accomodations, and for some reason she thinks that talking about ANY personal matters in class is illegal. she does not answer her email, and she is never at her office hours.
She is definitely not the brightest. Stated several very obviously false statements in lectures. In one of the reading materials that she wrote I recognized it to be paraphrased from a masterclass article. So the level of education is poor but as long as you do the reading and apply yourself it is an easy A.
I think that she is an amazing teacher because she is very passionate and professional towards her job, but also she can get mad if you ask silly questions. English is my third language, so I always found it difficult to study it, but I had improved a lot in her class because her explanation is quite simple. So, I took her again for ENGL 1102.
Over the entire semester she has messed up due dates multiple time, would say different dates in class. She was also extremely passive aggresive and when you would ask a question and she would never answer straight up and would prance around the question. She would also be very confusing when giving instructions and it would never be clear.
This is the second class that I took of her, and I plan on taking another class. She is quite professional and passionate about the things she teaches. As long as you pay attention and communicate properly, you will easily pass her class. I was failing her class due to my absences, but clear communication and hard work landed me an A.
This professor made me hate English. I have always been good at English throughout k-12 but she drove me crazy. These reviews are not insane. She is extremely passionate and insulting. She will NEVER give you a straight answer and change due dates all the time. She begs you to use AI which is so weird. I wouldn't take her!!
She knows a lot about the subjects she is teaching! sometimes she can seem a little harsh but with communication, the class can be pretty easy as she responds quickly. She does change things last minute sometimes and there was a lot of reading but the content was actually interesting. Also helped a lot with my research skills!
Made us purchase her textbook without it being finished. Said she would write as we learn but has yet to update. Waste of $100. Dances around questions. Changes due dates often without telling. EXTREMELY passive aggressive. Participation is mandatory but will cut you off. High expectations for students but clearly not herself. Could go on and on.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NEVER TAKE HER. If you hate yourself then go ahead and take this course. She is by far the worst prof I've ever had. She is never clear when you ask a question and she's extremely rude and very passive aggressive. She yells at you if she sees your phone, and her lectures are extremely boring and pointless.
She knows what she's talking about there is not doubt about it. She can tend to go off topic during her lectures and she can get passive aggressive with her students. I had no problem because she made me a better writer and understood composition better which I struggled with. Take her for the criticism so you can get the most from her class.
She's big on teaching content through lectures; she can be somewhat critical, which can be awkward, but it's very constructive and you'll learn a good bit regarding composition. Eccentric but very passionate about English. If my work schedule permitted I'd take her for 1102.
From what you might hear, this professor is very odd and a little crazy, but she is caring and her class is overall pretty easy. I wouldn't take this class in person if you don't have to because it is extremely boring and no point of being their because of her repetition explaining, but the class itself was not bad and she is flexible with grading.
Professor Mattord can be strict, but her clear explanations and essay feedback make the class manageable. Attending every lecture and using unstuck ai for study prep helped me succeed in this course.
Do not take her. I had a 102F fever and missed a test. She didn't care that I was sick; she said that since I missed it, I get a 0 for it. She also said "You have to learn that your actions have consequences." She is very rude and doesn't compromise at all.
Don't take her
condescending
Great would recommend, will help you in the long run.
Her class was pretty easy, there are a lot of papers you have to write but she doesn't grade harsh. The lectures were a tad random and didn't have much to do with our assignments. I would definitely take her again just because her class was easy to comprehend and the assignments were reasonable!
Solid class if you are on top of your work. Has lots of papers that are completion grade but is a tough grader on those that aren't for completion. Lectures are quite unique and be ready for some out-of-pocket comments. Every class is a rollercoaster and be prepared.
Her class was fairly easy, only 3 essays and easy assignments throughout the semester. Attendance is not required, but she does give credit for showing up. Her lectures were just her explaining what was already in the textbook, so it was sort of boring at times. She can also come off passive aggressive but she is a solid professor
