Does not like to answer questions, lots of group work
Will only answer questions regarding format, nothing on content
Lots of group work
Great structure. Lots of enthusiasm. Requires alot of hard work. Make sure you have a good group.
Not sure what everyone is talking about found her to be really nice and taught the class really well
Dr Mclarney is one of the most dynamic speakers you will ever hear; however, her course is crap. Basically you buy a $175 book and memorize it and write a pile of papers for which you will receive an A- regardless of content.
McLarney makes this class worth it. First term commerce, this was the only class worth going to. She is an interesting speaker, and we covered a large content. Regardless however, if one was to read all of the text books that they want us to buy, anything less than a B would be unexcusable.
If it wasnt for the tutorial assignments i wouldnt have passed, the exams were insane! She allowed me to understand a life long lession, "you will do some of the dumbest tasks in the workplace for some of the stupidest reasons but in the end you gotta do it."
It was a hard class. She has experience in her field and definatly(sp?) knows what she is talking about.
Rediculous exams, on material that had nothing to do with the overall purpose of the course. she makes you read at least 9 newspaper articles a day, and is a psycho if someone does something that does not conform to her exact rules. Her TAs are night and day, some mark too hard (mine) and some dont.
Her exams are brutal! They are actually insane. Her classes were very interesting and she is an amazing teacher/speaker. The tutorial leaders are awesome! THANK GOD FOR THEM, or else i would have failed the course.
Dr. McLarney is definetly the prof i respect the most. The course is hard but she makes a 250 person auditorium seem like a personal tutorial.
Sorry!!! The best way to teach grad students isn't to make them memorize a book. Instead, focus on analysis, skill building, etc. In short, Dr. McLarney’s class reminded me of a line out of Good Will Hunting “…could have got the same education for $1.50 in late fees a the public library”.
knows her stuff. very formal but very helpful. keeps conversations on topic.
Yes the exam and midterm are long and hard. But her lectures are awesome, I didn't think I was going to like her after the first lecture, but she turned out to be my favorite professor. Adds humor to the lectures but stays on topic. The tutorials are helpful and easy assignments and participation marks make up 50% of your grade.
She's a great prof. Scary at first, but she really knows her stuff. Exams are long, but not that hard if you really study.
Definatley spurred my interest in business and helped me realize that it was the field that I wanted to work in. A woman of great integrity who took pride in weeding out the slackers. I actually found myself interested and wanting to go to her class on a weekly basis!
Makes you work for your grade but keeps it interesting the entire time...wish all my profs had both challenged and motivated in the same manner...
Very smart, seems experienced in the field, energetic and interesting. I have a terrible TA (unlike, it seems, everyone else here), but that’s not her fault :) I think that she is brilliant.
She is the most brilliant Professor I've ever had. This woman is genius, and makes the material interesting. I looked forward to this class every week. The midterm and exam are really difficult though. MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD TA!!!
Dr. McClarney is one tough chick. But she knows what shes talking about and if you go to class you will learn so much from her just talking about her experiences. She makes Business interesting when other profs just droan on and on. Good luck, lots of hard work needed.
This class is very difficult. She seems to be brilliant, but the midterm and marking scheme are difficult.
The best professor in the Faculty of Management. She is an engaging speaker and has incredible confidence in her abilities. She and her TA's are helpful and very approachable. This is a though course, but the only first year course at Dal commerce worth going to.
inspiring! i loved listening to everything she had to say. exams are tough, i don't really know where she gets her questions from... however i think she knows their difficulty because the assignments make up a big portion of the grades too (which are easy). loved the TAs & i plan on taking another one of her classes in the future! GO MCLARNEY!
Comes across as intimidating at first, but is very funny and entertaining. Encourages participation and discussion in her classes. Expects a lot out of her students, but will hand out good grades if they are deserved. She is professional and expects students to be on time and to pay attention. Worth taking the class to hear what she has to say! (Y)
Amazing Proffessor...1rst year students lucky to have a proffessor of this callaber...She is inspiring...ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!
EXCELLENT PROF! Anyone is lucky to take this class and have such an unbelievable prof for a first year course. Can't say enough good things about her.
No idea on how to teach a graduate level course--showing videos and testing students on obscure details (dates, country GDP, abbreviations) is NOT learning. No feedback on assignment content--feedback on footnote form and margins!! Warnings about plagiarism, attendance, etc. conveyed a strong distrust of students.
Amazing speaker, I felt i was watching a very expensive movie every time i went to class, never missed one. Didn't learn anything though, exam was full of random nothings largely relevant to locals of a random area ill never visit. I felt i was playing written Jeopardy on the exam. I might sit in on her classes next year for fun.
all I can say is , Welcome to hell. She is one if the professors that will make your life a living hell when you see her exams and the material that you need to cover you will say OMG out lowed. my advice is pray to good, try to cover every thing she says, and pray to god again
I thought she was my best prof by far in my year. Extremely strict but if you try, you'll get the grade you want. She doesn't screw around and stays on topic but is incredibly engaging in her lectures. If you want a clinic on how to public speak, drop into her class. Her class is a lot of work, but worth it.
for lectures- this prof is great. very engaging. very knowledgeable. to do well in the actual course though you'll need a good TA because she isn't very available for help outside of class time. there's a TON of readings. tests are brutally hard.
McLarney's lectures are awesome, she is so knowledgeable and very engaging when she speaks. NOT a bird course though; you have readings from one textbook for the lectures, readings from another textbook for the tutorials, and reading the globe and mail every day is mandatory and is worth 20% of the marks on exams. If you do the readings, its doable
Got straight A's except for her class. She's a ruthlessly hard professor. She's clear on what we're going to be tested on but she makes the tests insanely, crazy, unbelievably hard. I feel like she intentionally wants to keep the average low. She's a great speaker, but one of the hardest professors ever.
Very engaging in classroom setting- easy to listen to, with many real-life examples. Brutally hard tests and minimal feedback on assignments. Provides little direction on how to actually do better in the class.
Very hard marker
McLarney is an incredible lecturer and probably one of the best professors you will ever have. Very clear and engaging. However, COMM 1010 is a course that you have to devote a ton of reading to and still not expect to get high marks. Course exam average was in the 50s this year. Also, she doesnt do anything online through Blackboard.
The worst professor that I've ever had.
She will try and scare you at first and you will probably hate her. I did! but she has a passion for what she teaches and you can really tell! Going to class is key but she is an amazing prof! only down side is the tutorials are a pain and hope you like reading because there are 2 textbooks and newspapers you have to read.
She is pretty great overall. She scares you at first, but she is awesome after some classes.
Exceptional
One of the best professors I've had at Dal! Dr. McLarney is brilliant. Her lectures are very interesting. The midterm and final were tough, but if you do the readings, go to the lectures, and read the Globe and Mail you're set.
Dr. McLarney is by far the best prof I've had to date. She is tough and intimidating at first to earn your respect, and she definitely will. She doesn't beat around the bush about anything, but is an extremely intelligent woman. Her lectures were genuinely interesting to listen to, as she tells stories. Would definitely take a class from her again!
She comes off as a scary lady but as time goes on you will love her. COMM1010 is a tough course, theres lots of reading and she is a tough grader. The exams were very specific but the tutorial assignments weren't that bad. She is a great lecturer and is very inspirational. Do the readings, go to class, study, and you'll be fine
My favourite Professor. Aslong as you are up to business news you will pass!
She was really interesting, but really scary
You can't afford to fall behind in her class, but it's so worth it to be extra focused. She truly knows what she's talking about and although she is a tough marker, she makes up for it with her fun lectures :)
Her lectures were very engaging and I like her as a person. However, she is a really hard grader and her evaluations ate very difficult.
Dr. McLarney was phenomenal. Fascinating lectures that cover all aspects of the business world, with engaging tutorials that build upon lecture material seamlessly. Required to read Globe daily, as well as textbook chapters and supplementary documents, but nonetheless very worth it. I got an A, but class average was C. Work hard and you'll succeed!
Fantastic lecturer, easily the best one in first year commerce. Very tough marker though and exams are hard. Be sure to read all required material or you will fall behind!!!
i look back thinking how intimidating this class was. just read the textbook and the required material. put your head down and power through it- its not that bad. prof is a fantastic lecturer very engaging
TRUE GEM!! INTIMIDATING BUT SO INTERESTING
this class is very difficult, but not because of Mclarney. She is an amazing and engaging lecturer and very respected/ high up in her field. Just accept that the midterm and exam are going to be crazy hard and enjoy the schools best prof/ lecturer.
Dr. Mclarney is an incredible lecturer and made a fairly dry curriculum extremely interesting. You'll definitely have to work hard for a good mark though.
Amazing lecturer, very knowledgeable.
She is such an intelligent professor! Read Globe and Mail news everyday since there will be lots of questions on the midterm and final. Read book before class and be attentive in class A lot of participation is required in class
Her lectures were really good but her assignments (specifically 100 questions of MONTHS of globe and mail readings for the midterm/final exam) were ridiculous and over the top. She literally said to us that she designs the course so 1/3 fail.
bruh momento if you skip lectures
She is a really great lecturer and I really enjoyed her lectures, but all of the assignments were ridiculous and not spaced out evenly at all. Haven't seen my grade for barely anything and it's the end of the course. Get ready to read because you have to read the textbook, do tutorial homework, and read the globe and mail everyday.
She comes across as pretty intense when you first attend her lectures, but she's pretty friendly when you speak with her one on one. Fair amount of reading (textbook/newspapers) but most of the information taught is straight forward. Not a class/tutorial you can skip, but in terms of effort one of the easier classes to take in first year commerce.
Probably a very smart woman, just inconsiderate and not caring at all. Students success and learning are low on her list of priorities, and it shows in the way she speaks to students. Would never take it again.
terrible
I would be lying if I said I watched most of the lectures, because there was no test or quiz on the material. The prof seems good, my biggest beef was with my TA. This is a first-year class and yet the papers were graded extremely harshly. The TA seemed to be frustrated and mad at us constantly.
Overall, a pretty good professor. Delivered lectures well. However, not very responsive to students over email. Biggest issue was with my TA, extremely unorganized and incompetent, seemed as if they had no prior experience running a class or grading. Gave little to no feedback. Tutorials were a waste of time but they were graded on participation .
Rather than fostering positive learning, used fear tactics.
The grading was difficult and final exam multiple choice was tough. However, in person during intensive, made the time engaging.
great professor. but the TA that I personally had was amazing!! if you get the chance def chose Steve Boyd. not only is he funny, he knows how to teach.
Smart and serious professor. Lectures are informative and engaging. Getting tested on 3.5 months worth of Globe and Mail articles is ridiculous though. A bit too serious and rude for my liking but nonetheless you will learn stuff in her class.
Lots of reading both textbook and news articles. News reading are a bit odd as its hard to remember things from a month or two prior when you have other things going on in your life. Bizcafe project was fun. Also, I'd recommend Steve Boyd as your TA. He is a unique person. Also, final exam is 200 MC questions which is really ridiculous.
200 multiple choice for final?!?!?!?!
Dr. McLarney is a good professor, she is well spoken and very organized. Even though all lectures, tutorials, and assignments are very easy, however, the course itself is very heavy, it requires a lot to memorize, and takes up a lot of your time. (almost too much even for a full time student)
Dr. McLarney really impresses me by her professionalism and organized system of teaching. You can tell she is prepared, knowledgeable, and straightforward about the business environment. And she also cares if you are learning. Her lectures and assignments are interesting and I admire the way she can discipline a whole class of First Year students.
Dr McLarney was easily the best lecturer I have ever had. She was very engaging and made me want to learn. Although, I didn't get the result I wanted the course was setup well. My only critic was many of out grades weren't displayed on bright-space before the final exam that helps us gauge our success in the course. Thanks McLarney, you were great.
This professor is terrifying. She will yell at you if you're on a device, even if you're taking notes on your iPad. I take notes on the chapter we will discuss in class beforehand, but she doesn't even cover the same topics when I get to class. Reading the newspaper daily and expecting to be tested on that in December is insane.
She does not like phones and her lectures are frankly quite boring. Exams are all multiple choice, and she does not allow people to use ipads or computers to take notes making it difficult if you have any learning difficulties.
On the midterm and exam, you are tested on info from your lectures, tutorials, globe and mail, biz cafe, and the textbook. If you can, choose the tutorial with Steve as the TA.
Dr Mclarney is a good teacher in terms of her lectures, they were probably the most interesting of all my classes, but her grading is bad. The midterm and final are stupidly hard in comparison to the class content, and she makes it seem like she doesnt care at all about her students whatsoever.
Dr. McLarney is a genius. She is an extremely interesting lecturer and I thoroughly enjoyed attending her classes. However, the exams are pretty ridiculous. It will probably be your lowest mark in first year commerce but aside from the ridiculous exams, McLarney is awesome.
Horrible prof with the most insanely unrealistic expecations. Avoid at all costs. Never scaled marks even when most the class failed.
Best Professor I have ever had! Amazing lectures that keep you focused and explains concepts brilliantly with examples that you can use in your day to day life. Also uses a lot of lecture participation (but only by volunteers!!) which keep the class lively and interesting! Would love to have this professor again! 10/10 recommend.
Her lectures were the most interesting however, it is strictly paper notes. You will be yelled at/kicked out if she sees you on a device. There are only about 2 actual assignments and then a weekly biz cafe decision but the amount of reading is crazy. The midterm and exams were tough in comparison to the lecture material.
Dr. McLarney was a great lecturer, however, this course was a nightmare. A group project where you are marked collectively (if someone does 0 work, it is shown in your own mark) is ridiculous. Testing students on the Globe and Mail is intended to drop everyone's GPA. This class made me drop my business minor so I could do something more meaningful.
Comm 1010 was more difficult then it needed to be. The midterm and final exam were both much harder then expected and in my opinion necessary. Despite that, Dr. Mclarney. is one of the best lecturers I've ever seen, she controls the room, keeps attention, and is almost inspiring. As a professor she's amazing, but this class was never that deep.
The professor announces at the beginning of the term this is a course with lots of content and that readings and lectures are necessary for decent marks on the final exam. McLarney was upfront about course expectations and answered emails promptly. The professor is a great in class lecturer. Make a name for yourself in her classes by engaging.
Avoid at all costs. Took her class last year and it still makes me feel mad when I think about how hard the class was. Expected to memorize daily newspapers for the entire semester. Tested material was not reflective of what was learned in class. Not accommodating at all and does not care about students success.
