Proficient in the area of film and gender studies as well.
unprepared. does not facilitate class discussions
she's a great professor. one of the most interesting film classes i've taken.
She's unprepared and will lecture on films that we've seen months ago. I think people are just too intimidated to say anything because she's the chair for the english dept.
unprepared - never covered half of the syllabus, and spent most of her time forcing her own readings and theories down students' throats
Dr. Tyler assigned the most difficult material I have ever encountered. However, if you're up for a challenge she is an amazing teacher and exceptionally helpful on an individual level. She is brilliant, and very open to varying opinions.
Disorganized! Oblivious to the fact that students were completely lost.
Unprepared
demanding, intelligent, and eccentric, but if you leave at the end of the quarter without learning something, then you just didn't try. if you attend class, read the material and actually listen, it'll be the most rewarding class you'll have taken.
Bad: She asks vague incomprehensible questions and wonders why no one responds. She doesn't show up for office hours. She will try to micromanage and appropriate your paper. Her social skills are abominable. Good: She really is very intelligent. If you rub her the right way, like a genie, she will help you find information. (Hey it's a crap shoot!)
She is eccentric but not a bad person at heart. She is shy and not the best at communicating but she will help you if you're a respectful human being. Teaching is difficult, so we should all cut people a little bit of slack.
This instructor is very unorganized and makes unreasonable demands on students that she herself does not live up to. She reviews weekly readings, weakly...and never engages the class. On review of terms and readings assigned, she adds material that has nothing to do with any assignments. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY IN ONE OF HER CLASSES!
She assigns more reading than she actually covers and then expects you to know it all for quizes. we only got through discussing maybe a third of the reading but were quizzed on all of them. her explinations of readings are scattered and difficult to follow. Readings had little to do with the two papers we had to do. Over all she was totally dull.
Professor Tyler is certainly not the easiest professor you will have. She expects her students to engage with the material and actually think (hard) about what is being presented. If you like your information spoonfed to you like don't take her classes. But if you are willing to put in the effort, you will be rewarded.
The professor has been teaching for a while, but evidently not long enough to know that perhaps she should change her lesson plan. She assigns way too many readings and fails to cover a lot of them;and when she is going over the readings, she does so in a fast and incomprehensible manner. If you have a brain, then do not take this class.
I think most of us were grateful to have our tests postponed but all of the tests? The syllabus went through ungodly morphs up until the 7th week (out of 10) and although it's clear she's very intelligent, her expectations for herself should be better. If you are patient, you're good. If you aren't forgiving, don't take her.
Avoid this class, lecture is extremely long and unorganized. Lecture seems to differentiate from readings. Speaks way too much for students to even keep up with notes.
This is by far one of THE WORST English professors here on campus. She is boring during lecture, she gets pissed of if you can not understand something and asks a question about it and she is not enthusiastic nor organized when it comes to teaching. I would AVOID her classes AT ALL COSTS now.
This film class was cross-listed with English, but most of the time I felt like I was in a foreign language class! She was at least 5 minutes late everyday so by the time she got all of her stuff set up we were already out 10-15 minutes of a 50 minute class. She got very far behind because she rambled on and on everyday. Would not recommend.
No syllabus. Gave an online take home midterm over a weekend worth 15% of final grade, then changed it to 25% because we "took too long taking it". Classes unstructured and boring. She is an associate dean which means you cannot argue with her on grading problems and expect to win. Not recommended for FILM students.
DON'T EVER PUNISH YOURSELF BY TAKING A CLASS WITH HER!! IT IS THAT BAD!!
She is by far the worse professor on campus!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER PLEASE! Safe your sanity, time, and life!!
She is the worst professor EVER!!! She is condescending and not helpful. She wastes most of the class telling you about what will be covered in class, but then she never leaves enough time to actually TEACH. Then she gives extrememly hard quizzes and tests on stuff she never actually covered! DONT TAKE HER!!!!
horrible.
Good luck staying awake in lecture. She loves the sound of her voice and will talk on and on about the most irrelevant parts of english and has lost the ability to communicate with her students. I would suggest not showing up at all for class, but she uses clickers, so you are just out of luck. The amount of reading/homework is not bad though.
By far, the worst teacher I have ever had. The work is hard (mainly because her instructions are ambiguous and contradictory at time) and on top of that, I haven't received grades from any of the assignments so far this quarter, and Week 9 ends tomorrow. I urge you to avoid this teacher, if you value your sanity.
Avoid her if you can! She knows the material very well but but she's a terrible teacher.
She can be hard, especially if you're not serious about class. Keep up with the readings, pay attention in class, go to office hours if necessary and you'll be fine. She definitely knows what she's talking about and can easily clear up anything that is confusing, so just talk to her. She is very detailed when helping out. You can't be lazy with her
Spends too much time talking, directions for a 2 page essay were 8 pages long and very difficult to understand. Do not take her if you can avoid it.
such a waste of time!! do not take this class!!! she is a terrible teacher and you won't get ANY grades back the entire quarter so you won't have a clue as to how you are doing in the class. huge regret taking this class and not dropping when I had the chance.
She is unorganized and uninteresting. She assigns SO MANY readings that she NEVER goes through in class. She does not post any grades whatsoever throughout the quarter. Even other professors said she is not a good professor. Honestly, sign up for this class with her, it's an automatic FAIL. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! DO NOT!!
Professor Tyler knows her material, but she is not a very good teacher. She is unorganized when it comes to updating her students' grades. Avoid taking any of her classes. I regret not dropping this class when I had the chance.
Unclear, long directions for every assignment (5-8 pages)
Avoid her at all costs. She is very unorganized and takes a VERY long time to update students' grades. She goes off on too many tangents in class and we started our final 40 minutes late. She's a real nice lady but her organization and choice of content for this course needs improvement.
I emjoyed her class&took it fall 2012. She is a good professor but is soft spoken. She gives alot of feedback on papers.Lectures=clear. You have 2 papers&a final with a 1 page draft for the papers. final is cumulative and hard and 20 MC questons plus 2 short essays.always a day or 2 behind. posted final syllabus week 5. posted final s.g day before.
Post final syllabus end of week 4. We all now have GD on our grades because she can't grade on time because she's "busy". Didn't get our 1st papers back (500 wrds) until then end of week 9. She had them for 6 weeks. AVOID if you value sanity.
This woman made my quarter a living hell! Nothing was EVER exceptional for her, and her lectures were more confusing than the readings! Didn't post a syllabus until the 4th week, and did not follow it - she fell behind and made it difficult to keep up with her. AVOID HER,
EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED. Required readings that you never use for class. Assignments are never graded in a timely manner. Essay prompts and syllabus are long winded and confusing. (Syllabus was 14 pgs). The entire class was very unclear. She's a very nice person though. If you're confused, I suggest office hours on a regular basis.
This is THE worst professor I have ever had. Super unorganized, very late on assignments and on grading(it's week 9 and we still haven't had our first papers graded). Spends the entire class time on one subject and fall weeks behind because she goes into tangent. I feel like I wasted my money. I don't know how she's still teaching.
Tyler seems a bit unorganized as we didn't get our grades back until about the 9th week of the quarter, and we were always behind on lectures; this was mostly because of her propensity to humor the students when they asked off topic questions. Overall, go to all the lectures and make sure to ask her questions if you don't understand, she will help!
worst professor I've had my entire educational career. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
I can't believe she is a teacher. I have never experienced a teacher so unorganized and rude. Her critiques on your papers will not make any sense, and will not follow what has been said in lecture at all. I was excited to take this class so badly, and now I hope I fail so I can take it again with a teacher who is ACTUALLY competent.
Professor Tyler is definitely not easy, and I would not recommend her if you are not good at English. She is a very tough and picky grader; she does not grade things quickly. She is ,however, very helpful in office hours. She will look at all drafts beforehand. You get what you put into it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She is the worst professor I have had at UCR. She assigns work that she cannot even grade on time, and if she does her grading is strange. So, don't expect to know how your grades are going until the class is over. Her instructions for assignments are way too long and unclear.
She is brilliant but tough. You must read/watch everything, attend lecture and hope you drew the correct conclusions. I didn't get any graded work back until week 9 (of 10) and we took quizzes on readings assigned as many as 4 weeks prior to the quiz. My advice: take good notes and try to keep up with the mountains of reading.
She is a tough professor. She has a tendency to go off on tangents and she is such a nice lady people feel awkward telling her. However, she is very knowledgeable in a lot of subjects - you will definitely learn a lot but it is up to you to fight against the negatives! You will be working mostly independently. She does, however, give good feedback.
I regret taking her class. She is the toughest professor I have ever had. She is very smart and knows a lot about many subjects, but her lectures are hard to follow as she's very disorganized. She takes forever to grade assignments and she's super tough on grading especially on papers. I didn't feel like I actually learned from her class.
Professor Tyler is easily one of the most challenging and yet stimulating professors in the English department at UCR. Take her course if you actually enjoy learning and are open to criticism. Her courses taught me how to write and think critically. She takes a long time to grade, but the copious feedback you receive is well worth the wait.
One of the biggest things that irked me about professor Tyler was that everything from her guidelines for papers to how to use iLearn was over-detailed and that made it really overwhelming for me. It made it difficult for me to focus on the assignments since I'm spending so much time reading through directions for a paper.
She's managed to turn a Literature class into one about Art History. 3 weeks into the quarter and we have yet to speak about or look at a single text. Everything is overly detailed, confusing, and boring. This is an upper division class of English majors, and she's turned it into an Art class for grad students. Truly disappointing.
She is by far the worst professor I have take at UCR. She grades her papers based on her opinion and does not take yours into consideration. Pretty much her way or the highway. The class itself is not difficult, but she is a hard grader. She lags on and on, making the class dreadful. I like english, but boy did she make me detest it.
Nice person, terrible professor. No consideration for students whatsoever. She overlaps on class time and we get out late every time! Oh, but when it comes to her time, she wants all consideration. You leave early, she takes you off the attendance for the day. If you miss lecture twice, your grade goes down. She does not understand life happens.
She talks down to the entire class at least once a week, fails to grade 500 word essays in < 6 weeks, has instructions that are 4x longer than the maximum length of your essays, reads paragraphs off of powerpoints she doesn't make, claims shes too busy to grade, and has a random 300 word assignment count more than the final. Got the syllabus week 4
Warning. Don't take her class. Constantly talked down to her students. Expected doctorate level work in a lower division English class. Tough grader and had a complicated grading system for no reason. Hardly followed the syllabus. Spent 2-3 class periods on author's bio/maybe a hot second on the actually story content. don't recommend
grades arbitrarily and has an illogical system for determining final grades. I asked her a few days before the quarter ended what my grade so far was and she had absolutely no idea. she also goes off on tangents and barely teaches, and when students ask her how they can improve papers she offers little and vague feedback while being visibly annoyed
She has a reputation for being hard, but she's not GPA breaking at all. Here's the thing: just go to her office hours, read through her essay guides, and read all the assigned material and answer the questions. Also, don't be mad if she doesn't grade right away. If you do the work, you should know what you'll be getting!
Very unorganized and late to almost every lecture. She found something to yell at us about every lecture and her grading is very vague and unclear. Her website is also really complicated and unnecessarily overwhelming. She gets mad when she gets asked questions bc we should know the answer. Expects too much for a undergraduate breadth course.
Professor Tyler is a pretty dry person in general. But all of her exams are take home, she is a hard grader on essays and exams because she wants specific things in her paper/tests. Tests consist of short answer and essay questions. She takes a long time to grade and we don't know our grade until the last few weeks of the quarter.
Awful professor! She was unprepared and unorganized and made up stupid excuses. I dont recommend you take her in any class. She assigns reading and talks about irrelevant stuff. She gave a pop quiz cuz people weren't coming and was laughing and smiling at the classes b/c of her pleasure in our struggle. Goes off tangents and is very condescending.
I would never willingly take this professor again. Disorganized. Tangent-laden. Verbose. These are the words I would use to describe my experience in this class. Class would start late, and it would always go over by 3 or 4 minutes. I did not receive my midterm grade until the last day of finals week! Do not recommend.
Please do not take this class. Even if it is the only class open by the time you register. You will regret it.
Worst experience I've ever had. I've never rated a professor, but I had to rate this one. We only had two assignments: the midterm and the final. The midterm was graded at the same time as the final, meaning I didn't know my grade until I couldn't do anything about it. Lecture heavy, attendance mattered, worked hard and failed. AVOID THIS TEACHER.
Takes forever to grade. I went into the final not knowing my grade (every day, she would show up to class making excuses as to why she hadn't graded it in weeks), and she made the final harder to "help" her grade it faster... Is extremely condescending in feedback, and is outright rude to students. Don't take this class if you don't need it.
Honestly worst professor I have taken. I went into my final barely knowing my grade for the class as she lagged with grading. Very unclear on her expectations and critiqued students work with by unnecessarily saying youre trying too hard to sound smart. Took her nearly 1 month to grade the midterms and again several weeks for the final.
Don't ever take her class! She gave us the syllabus in week 4. Very disorganized!
I took CAT's class 6 yrs ago. She's the most difficult professor I've had. At the time, I thought she was unreasonably cruel in her grading principles. I quote "This is not a college-level paper. The writing is very weak" but I realize it was me not putting in the effort. She's made a lasting impression on me as I enter mid-career well into 6 figs.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD IN MY WHOLE COLLEGE CAREER. The main issue is the grading and assignment aspects. She does not finish grading anything and when she does its half done. She just clocked out teaching this class and when she was emailed, she said "she had a lot going on". OKAY?! SO DO WE? if you can't grade assignments, don't assign them.
Would not take again or recommend to anyone. Professor Tyler was the most disorganized professor I have ever had. She would go off on tangents and never discuss the actual readings she was assigning. She always made excuses for not grading our assignments and didn't grade our midterm until week 10 when nobody could do anything about it.
She is the absolute worst professor I have ever taken. She did not grade one single assignment until the last week before finals week. When we finally did receive this ONE assignment back, it was PARTLY graded. She is not accessible at all and is painfully unorganized. I have no idea how she is a professor at a university. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
I would suggest staying away from any courses with this professor. She is very unorganized, patronizing, and very unprofessional in meeting deadlines. Each time I participated in this class, she has always nitpicked at my responses and made me feel horrible. Navigating this class and her off-topic stories during lectures are overall frustrating.
Professor Tyler should not be a professor. I have never struggled so much in one class nor have I hated a professor more. She grades so harshly and confusingly that by the end of it I don't even know my final grade nor how to amend my mistakes. She does not care about her students and it shows in how unaccessible she is. Do not take her!!!!
If I could rate 0 I would. Took her for Feminist Novels and didn't know my grade until Week 10-11 aka Finals Week. She played favorites with those who attended office hours and did not question her ever. She was really rude and nasty in her grading, humiliated us on the daily. Worst professor literally ever. Honestly hope UCR takes action.
shes my thirteenth reason <3
Do not take it if you love yourself. She needs to be more organized and grades everything at the last minute late. She Does not reply to her emails when you have a question. She would go off-topic about her life stories in-class lectures and make randomly inappropriate remarks. This classroom was so small that few people were only in this class.
No syllabus until Week 2, outlined that participation isn't mandatory (it was). Freaked over Chat GPT and assigned insane short answer response assessments to replace essays, which she graded harshly and unfairly. Never stuck to the syllabus or the reading schedule. Off-topic and crude at times. She scrapped the initial grade scale last minute.
I'm not even finished with the class yet and I have so much to say. It is week 7 and I don't know my grade... she has not made it clear what she is expecting. She grades very harshly yet does not give beneficial feedback. Her class. makes no sense at all. I have no idea what I am supposed to be learning... Seriously, do NOT take a course with her.
Behind on classwork/readings because she doesn't use +1hr class time effectively (personal stories). Does not update grades. No TA. Final has 4 parts (presentation, quiz, exam, and take home essay) all which is supposed to be done in 1 day??? Makes you pay for books on Perusal because you HAVE to annotate readings there for a grade. Do not take.
this woman was all over the place. as a classmate of mine described it, the class was based purely on "vibes". Lectures are just rambles and tangents, there's like a billion parts of the final that are unnecessary, and she is always behind on grading. If you want a class that you don't want to pay attention in, then her class is perfect.
Avoid at all costs, most confusing and rude professor I've taken at UCR. Consistently showed up late to lectures, and would get mad at/punish students who came in late. Did not prepare actual syllabus or grading scale until Week 8, and had to curve every assignment in the last week of the course because no one understood the content.
Not organized at all. Instructions for assignments were not clear. Hardly any lecture is worthwhile to prep you for the pop quizzes/ in-person exams. I don't think she's a bad instructor, but she's hard to follow when it comes to learning new concepts. She expects you to understand new ideas/concepts after reading 15 pages of reading material.
the absolute worst professor ever SAVE YOURSELF! we never talked about half of the readings and goes on extremely long tangents and then talks about the actual readings for the last 5 minutes of class.
Week 7, no assignments have been graded. Midterm questions are difficult to understand and she refuses to admit fault, saying it was our issue for not knowing what she meant. Refuses to tell us when the actual midterm is. Lectures are tangents that do not discuss assigned readings. Makes us read an entire novel, only to test us on random articles.
I strongly recommend staying away from this professor. Lectures are unhelpful, poorly managed, and boring. Professor ought to reorganize entire Canvas template because it is dated. If quizzes aren't canceled, the questions found within are ambiguous at best. Students are forced to buy online books which are never discussed in class.
Genuinely the most horrible professor I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and never take this course
Have you ever been shot by a machine gun? Because taking this class is the academic equivalent. I've survived some things, but nothing could've prepared me for Carole-Anne Tylers course. Walking into lecture felt like stepping into a battlefield where the professor just unloaded information at us like a malfunctioning machine gun BRARARARRARAR
The professor struggles with technology, delaying lessons and assignments. She ignores feedback and rarely engages with students. Grading is unclear, assignments come late, and the class falls behind because the schedule and syllabus are often ignored, creating stress and confusion.
