this teacher is still stuck in a different time period with that mullet shes got on her head. very important for students to keep up with the readings cuz she will fly through that chapter faster than the speed of light...seriously
gives insane tests, 80 questions in 50 minutes!!!
she will not even give you 1/2 of a point for a three point question if you forget a negative sign, she should at least give a point for attempting the problem...very very hard grader. i do not recommend this teacher
she is hard. hopefully her next test will not be as bad as her first. nice but crazyyyy hard.
The class is hard, but so are all other orgo classes. Dr Szpunar is one of the better Orgo teacher's here. She is definately helpful and willing to help you understand the material. I wouldnt take orgo in general if you want to get an easy A.
dr. szpunar is great. she gives you hints as to what will be on the exams. any trick that she has learned along the way to make organic less awful, she passes it on to her students. tests are very hard, but organic is hard. she makes it up to you by providing bonus points on the exam. highly recommended but beware: you have to study tons for an A.
Helpful but very very hard. Tests are insane.
She is a wonderful lady who cares about her students' success. She will do anything she can to help you understand and learn the material. She tells you exactly what to expect on the exam and the bonus questions are nice! Curve is huge. Orgo is hard no matter who you take, she just makes it more understandable to us non-visual people.
THIS CLASS SUX. she moves too fast. you can never do all the assigned hw for the upcommign class. she wants you do do 2 hrs of hw each night. take this class with only if you have a lot of free time. this last test so many ppl got like 40 pts out of 110 its insane!!! SUICIDE CLASS
If you are reading this to help you decide who to take for Organic. Take someone else... She is nice and all but her tests are simply not manageable. It doesn’t matter what you know, how long you study you will never get through one of her tests. I recognize that this course is supposed to be rigorous, buts it has turned out to be suicide.
she tries but its simply not her thing... you know how some ppl are briliant but they can't teach for****. take this class only if its the last one left while you're schedueling. but know it requires a minimum of 3 hrs b/w every lecture. oh and enjoy the pop quizes!!
people that are complaining are showing up to the exams unprepared. if you show up REALLY PREPARED, you can finish them. but you can't expect to be sort of familiar with the material, if that's you then YOU WONT FINISH THE TEST! dr. szpunar gives a time pressured-exam, but guess what - the MCAT is very time-pressured. She's very helpful to students
Difficult teacher but you'll learn a lot. if you can afford a GPA hit then take her but otherwise try the other orgo teachers. 3 tests 1 cumulative final + pop up quizes
Dr. S is without question a good teacher. For one she is always there to help and she presents the material in a way that everyone can understand. As one who has practiced using tests from 2 other O-chem professors, I can earnestly say that her tests are overly difficult. But you should know what makes them so difficult is the time restrain.
AVOID
She is a great lady and will help you anytime and wants you to do well. However, she does go quickly and does expect a lot of homework to be done, but what orgo teacher doesn't. She puts on her test what she goes over in class, it's just semi-difficult though.
People who leave Dr. Szpunar bad ratings clearly DO NOT give enough effort in her class. She is a really great professor!! Go to her office hours! She will help you as long as you need. She gives pop quizes in discussion section but I like them because they are really easy and force you to stay on top of things. its orgo! its hard!! face it!
I'm really sick of all the whiners and complainers...Dr. Szpunar is not hard. If you need to take orgo, she's the best teacher for it. All the complainers are just lazy, don't listen to them. To do well in this class, all you need to do is read the book and go to class.
how many ppl do u know that say orgo is as easy as reading a book and going to class? yea... hard class teacher is helpful but her tests are very long and most students won't finish... avg test score last test was 50ish out of 112 and avg quiz grade was 5 out of 10. you do the math...
Dr. S is a very knowledgeable, helpful, and approachable prof. I recommend her to anyone who is willing to work hard to learn orgo. She will help you every step of the way. If not, I think there is an easy orgo prof..yeah.. Dr.Urbeingweededout. Shoot, he doesn’t even care if you come to class!! Oh, but he's not teaching next semester. Cheers!
class avg on test 1 = 65/120 test 2 = lower than 60/110
I took chemistry for four years in highschool and I had a hard time in this class. If you want to save yourself a lot of trouble and sleep don't take chem with Szpunar!!!
keep looking
HoRRible!!!! Do NOT take! Does not explain things...when you ask for help she talks to you like shes on speed and you have no choice but to nod and pretend you understand because she exlains it too fast as if you already know what shes talking about! NeWs FLash!!! I don't know! That's why I'm in this class! --- I dropped it...DO NOT RECOMMEND
what he/she said (below my comment)... should be your last resort, especially the TuTh classes, her MWF are a lil better; easier b/c less time and she can't cram all that info in that time. LAST RESORT!!
Organic is hard to begin with, but she at least tries. Discussion is the only way you can do ok in this class. Tests are very hard, but she puts on a big curve
Orgo is a hard class to begin with but Szpunar is extremely helpful in helping you understand the concepts. She really is one of the better chem teachers here and you should definitely take her if you can.
Prof. Szpunar is very helpful and wants everyone to do well. Her tests are not easy but if you listen to her during class lecture, you will know exactly what she will cover on the exam. She doesnt try to trick you...Gives extra credit and generous curves....
she is a very good teacher and does everything to help you. wake up people the subject sucks not the teacher. if you really needed it she would help you. recommended
Dr. S is great...you must realize that Orgo is a hard classs, she does her best to make it simpler for each student. Do the reading, homework and come talk to her and you will do fine...don't be scared to take her, be scare to take Orgo.
orgo=hard szpunar=easy
She's a really nice person who tries to do a good job of teaching the material, but she tends to teach as if you're already supposed to know the material, she talks way too fast, and her exams are insanely long!!! personally, I'd take another teacher.
I was absolutely terrified of her for the first 2 weeks of class. However, she really is not that bad at all. Her tests are really long, but she is very nice and helpful; she knew practically everyone's name (in a class of 80)! She does care about her students... don't be scared to take her.
She is a great teacher that I really regret not taking for the first semester of Orgo. She makes sure that students understand what's going on. She hands out PPTs that are really helpful for taking notes and remembering things that are relevant. Many people say she's hard, but its because they are lazy or they don't realize its orgo. TAKE HER CLASS
Seems to not be approachable in class, but she is very helpful in office hours. She really knows her stuff, but makes a hard exam. She does give a nice curve and EC though.
Organic Chemistry is hard. Dr. Szpunar does her best to clarify everything by giving handouts on the important details. Her tests are REALLY LONG! and you can't take your time to finish them. She is more than willing to answer your questions during discussion.
Goes through lectures really fast! Tests are REALLY long and you can't take your time on them, you have to know what you're doing! Doesn't like to answer questions during lecture but more than willing to work out any problems during discussion.
great mullet hard class overall
Horrible!
this professor loves to give long and hard tests.very hard class. take this class only if your very good in organic chemistry
dont do this to urself unless u have to...just dont
Wow one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She doesn't let you make up any tests for any reason. Just reads off the slides. Tests are long and hard. Don't Take her.
This lady is such a great teacher!!! She doesn't take any crap from people trying to get something for nothing either.
Tests only determine not how much you know but how fast you can retrive information. Tests are WAY too LONG. Unfair with grading makes this class impossible.
Homework is not a reflection of test material. Tests are too long and not stright forward. DO NOT TAKE
Szpunar has read your comments and changed accordingly. Her tests are not too long anymore, and they are not unreasonably hard considering how hard the subject matter is. She is helpful and willing to answer questions in discussion class and takes steps to help students do better (like giving a take-home quiz). SHE IS VERY GOOD
I'm going to remain as objective as I can. Her tests are not as long as people say they are. The exam is based on the homework, which she's willing to go over during discussion. She grades fair and gives a lot of extra credit. Admits when she messes something up. Plus she curves the exam. If you study, like you are suppose to do then you'll be fine
good teacher, have to work hard to get a good grade like any orgo class should be. grades on a curve which helps because there are a lot of idiots at loyola
Her tests are long but doable. I took Becker first semester and her this semester and I'm glad I did. I only wished I took her both semesters then I think I would have had a better understanding the material. She makes orgo easier for such a hard subject.
I had Szpunar both semesters of ochem and she is awesome. She makes class fun and interesting, she's great at teaching, and she is very concerned about her students. She was always available when I needed help and always took the time to answer questions .She's an A+ professor.I'll miss her class next semester, especialy her sense of humor.
She doesn't know how to teach, useless pp note, it is as dense as the book! She always includes spectroscopy problems from the first semester to every other single test, that is unfair! other professors did NOT do this. Overall, unfair tests, only ~50% of lecture materials show up, the rest depend on your luck, since she takes them from other texts.
Dr. Szupunar, what can I say about this lady? For Starters, she uses lots of powerpoints, so dont worry about reading the book. Its orgo chem, so this class is going to be hell regardless of who you have, but if you enjoy a lady with John Stamos' Mullet hairdo from Full House (uncle Jesse), then she is the one for you!
This lady clearly thinks the students in her class are idiots. She invited our class to a lecture despite the fact that she thought it would be "way over our heads." She talks down to the class; her attitude doesn't really make me want to learn anything. But the tests are easy. No surprise questions, or anything to make you really think too hard.
HORRIBLE! one, she does make u feel stupid. when u ask a ques durin lecture, she'll say hold on to tht thought. she gives pop quizzes, VERY picky grader about everythin, tests are WAY too long & doesnt reflect the hw. if u dnt like chem dnt take her; your life will be hell. all i do is study orgo & im getting a C. gave a 2 pt curve on our last test
Dr Szpunar is a very intimidating person to begin with with a hardcore mullet, but is actually extremely nice and helpful if you go to office hours. This class is a b**** no matter what. The homework is harder than her exams which are LONG but manageable. Overall a great professor who knows her stuff. (and no, i am not getting an A)
I took orgo with Dr. Szpunar during the 2007-8 year. My advice: read the textbook, do ALL assigned homework problems, and *never* fall behind. Her tests are long but doable (if you're prepared), and are curved generously. At times it will feel like you're running an endless marathon, but your efforts will pay dividends come MCAT time.
Organic Chem is a tough class, but Dr. Szpunar is helpful and clear. Her tests are very long, but she always includes lots of E.C. I never read the chapters, just do homework, and am currently getting an A in the class. She is a very nice lady and a very god professor-- highly recommended!!
If you need to learn orgo because you?re pre-med, she is the teacher to take. She is a good teacher, that actually teaches. She may seem intimidating at the beginning but one you get to know her she is great. She makes time for her students. Need extra help, go to her during office hours. Totally recommend her.
Although she's intimidating at first and her personality can seem a bit abrasive, Dr. S is a great professor. She knows the name of almost everyone in our 100+ person class and is always willing to answer questions. Tests are hard, but that's to be expected. Attend lectures and keep up with homework problems and you should do fine.
szpunar is scary. avoid
she is very intimidating but once you go talk to her she's empathetic and understanding. good pace for the class, explains everything very clearly. tests are pretty standard & are easier than the book homework, just long. overall i really liked her!
She's scary when you first meet her but she only acts like that to show people that organic chemistry is not a blow off class and that they should take it seriously. Once you get to know her you'll see that she's really rooting for you. She knows every single student in class and sincerely wants them to succeed. Arguably the best prof at Loyola.
Szpunar is an amazing professor. Even in the summer when it's really a lot harder to get all the information in she manages to teach it very well. She is also really funny and nice. She wants you to succeed. She offers a lot of extra credit on each quiz and exam. Definitely not a blow off class. Do the work it will pay off.
AWFUL TEACHER FOR ORGO! Had Helquist and enjoyed her class a lot more. Took Szpunar over the summer for orgo. She just flies through the material, and doesn't explain things well. Extremely boring and has an abrasive personality. Not helpful through email. Also, I couldn't pry my eyes off of her mullet long enough to pay attention to her lectures.
I'm not surprised there are mixed reviews & here's why. Prof is clear in class & the *material* on the tests is reasonable/on-the-easier-side. What makes this class difficult: tests are timed & rushed. The 1st exam felt like my nose was 2" away from a bullet train whizzing by. Great for fast test takers, bad for smart students who need more time.
Good Prof. Wants to help students. You need to do the hw, and come to the discussion class ready to ask questions on what you don't understand. Rushed tests are hard, but you learn a pretty good amount
Good for outside of class help. Tests are made so that you are rushed and need to know the material. Do all the suggested hw problems, and come prepared in discussion
She is a very good professor. Will explain everything until all the students understand. Her exams are similar to homework problems. I got an A in both semesters.
One of my favorite teachers so far. I took her class as a Freshman. She's an amazing teacher, I had no background in orgo whatsoever. I learned so much from this lady, can explain things perfectly. I agree you have no time to breathe on her tests. I will honestly say I learned 90% from her slides, book wasn't my main source. I got a high A both sem
I had her for both semesters of organic chem. If you read the powerpoints and do the practice problems, then you are set for an A. Don't bother with the book, it'll just confuse you if more. She does a really good job in terms of keeping it simple.
I got an A both semesters of orgo, and the funny thing is I barely passed general chemistry. She is very nice and helpful. Her exams are basically the same questions from the studyguide except a little changed here and there.
Szpunar is awesome! It is completely possible to get an A in her class! I really recommend her to my fellow premeds.
Ok i took her for orgo 1. If you want to do good in her class like an A or B. You need to attend every class. Take notes as she talks. She uses power points so have them with you. Use office hours and discussion. To study: read the book/memorize the slides/ practice problems (KNOW THEM ITS SOO MUCH EASIER? her tests are basic orgo. not too bad
she. is. HILARIOUS. and also a great teacher - I went in to her 2nd semester class knowing nothing and still managed a good grade and even better understanding of the material. Go to class! Pay attention, and definitely go to discussion. She seems like a beast, but her bark is far bigger than her bite - a great teacher.
Dr Szpunar is a very good teacher. She lectures well and is helpful. However, her tests are too long and she demands perfection. She doesn't give partial credit. I took this class over summer, but ended up doing pretty well because I read the book, listened in lecture, and did all of the homework. Orgo is not easy, but Szpunar tries to help
Szpunar is a great teacher. Yes, the class is demanding, you put in hours of work doing homework problems but it is worth it. She is very available and willing to help you. The tests are difficult so if you care about your GPA you might want to take a different professor but if you want an interesting class where you will learn something take this!
No. She says the exams are similar to the homework but a lot of it isn't and tests are hard as a result. She's nice and all that but I wouldn't recommend her for orgo. There are better/easier profs.
Horrible. DO NOT TAKE HER. Unfair.
Szpunar is the only reason I made it through orgo. She is an excellent professor who has clear lectures and is always available for questions. You have to attend lecture and discussion and do the homework but it all pays off in the end.
Good quality teacher. However, she does not do + or -. Therefore, if from an A you drop down to a C+, like I did, she will NOT hesitate to give you a C in the end. Really, reconsider taking her, if you care about your grades.
Maybe fav. professor at Loyola. Orgo is a tough subject but she is a great teacher and very enthusiastic. She will help you in office hours and in discussion a lot. This is ORGO: you have to attend all classes, do the homework, read, and study to do well. E.C. on all tests/quizzes(pop). An A is most definitely possibly (90%). Only ABCDF (no +-).
Awful. Her lectures are very unclear, and she expects that all of her students know as much as she does about Orgo. Her tests are way too long, and IMPOSSIBLE to complete in the time given. Announces her "pop" quizzes that week but they are not that hard. Cuts students off when they ask questions in class and discussion. Avoid if you care about GPA
she is great! I would wake up 8 am just to attend this class worth it totally, TAKE HER! I did amazing on my mcats all thanks to her :)
This was my favorite class. I had her for Chem223 as well, and the tests were much easier in Chem224. Szpunar taught me everything I needed to know for my MCAT. She was very clear, gave awesome lectures, and is a very smart person. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone that finds organic chemistry difficult.
If you go into this class with the understanding that you'll have to do 5X the amount of work you would do for any other science class, you'll do fine. Tests are fast-paced but fair. There are semi-generous curves on each test (82% is an A-), but you can't drop any of them. Expect this class to take a hit out of your social life.
You need to work REALLY fast on exams. REALLLLLLY fast. My first semester orgo prof's exams were jokes compared to hers. But, that said, she really prepares you for the MCAT. She also learns all of her students names. Overall, this class is difficult. But shes a very respectable professor. i'm glad that i took her.
I had her first and second semester. She is by far the most difficult professor, but she cares about her students and tries her best to help you succeed. Tests are very long, and you definitely need to do the homework, even if she isn't collecting. She's a chemistry genius though. Bad for GPA, good for actually learning orgo
Nice lady, class is extremely difficult.
This class feels impossible.
When you try to teach everything you end up teaching nothing
Must go to lecture to learn anything, cant learn orgo alone! YOU MUST KEEP UP!!!! Discussion is reserved for quizzes, she'll surprise you with them when you least expect it. Homework is easy. Four exams. Doesn't drop anything. Need 55% to get C. If you're thinking you can do it yourself, you cant, take someone else.
Szpunar is a tough, yet FANTASTIC orgo professor. Her lectures are crystal clear and she is very straightforward about her expectations. I took her over the summer and got an A both semesters. If you go into this class willing to work hard, you can do very well. There is a time crunch on her tests, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected.
Honestly I liked her as a professor. Powerpoints online made studying a lot better and her lectures are clear. BUY THE SOLUTIONS MANUAL AND MODEL, makes studying so much easier. Tests are exactly like examples in lecture and homework, if you so the Homework and take good notes You're set for good grades.
she's an amazing teacher. teaches really well... idk what everyone else is talking about. she's awesome. tests are tricky but definitely doable. got an A !
I had a terrible time with Szpunar. Chem is not my forte in the first place, and she goes extremely fast talking a mile a minute in lectures, gives more info then needed, making it very confusing. She will not answer a question unless it is asked properly, which makes her less approachable.
She is definitely very passionate about the subject. She is very helpful but definitely not easy. Her tests are very tricky and you have to work very hard to get an A. It is possible but very difficult
I thought she was a really awesome teacher. She is really fun and nice if you get to know her. As she tells you on the first day, if you don't keep up, you will struggle. Do the homework after lecture and try to be her best friend. And don't skip lecture. It isnt impossible to get an A but it will be hard work but you will know orgo in and out.
She comes off as irritated and mean, and she knows it. But office hours are so amazingly helpful if you can get over being intimidated by her. She's very clear in lecture and repeats herself over and over. She is the hardest Orgo professor though, an A is not likely
One of the best professors i have ever had. Yes, it is the hardest orgo class, and her tests are very hard, but she gives you all the tools you need to pass. Just do the homework that is assigned, and study for the quizzes, and you can get an A no problem. She is also very nice outside of class and is hilarious. She just wants everyone to do well.
She made me hate my life all semester, but now that the A is in the books and I'm on break, I'm so happy I took her. I'm definitely better off for the MCAT and for next semester having taken her. She gives you everything you need for an A. If you don't get one, you didn't put enough time into it. Take mostly easy classes at the same time.
I didn't understand the hype over Szpunar. Firstly, she runs through her lectures. They're hard to follow, so regardless, you have to teach yourself from the book. The final is the biggest killer though. No matter how well you do, if you lose the final, you're done. I wouldn't recommend her if you want a clear and fair professor.
Dr. Szpunar is infamous for the difficulty of her class. However, her lectures are CRYSTAL CLEAR. She is by far the most clear and most organized lecturer I've ever had! She is brilliant!!! However, be prepared to work - I mean it! No exaggeration! She opens the door for you, but it is your responsibility to enter. You really have to keep up! WORK!
Dr Szpunar isn't as bad people make her ought to be. Her lectures are really clear and tells you what's going to be on the test. You do have to work, but this is organic chemistry. Tests are little rushed, but the class is manageable. From what I heard, she is just as hard as May, but maybe a little easier.
I thought Szpunar was an incredible lecturer. Her tests were fair, but long and difficult. You really must make sure that you do all of the homework and understand the material as second nature because there is little time to think on the exams. I had to put in 3-4x more work for this class than any other, but I felt like I got out what I put in.
Although Dr. Szpunar's class is brutally difficult, I am happy I took her class. She teaches everything very clearly and she makes sure you learn; she is very approachable outside of class as well. The class is not an easy A, but to be fair, you only need a 75 for a B and a 55 for a C. Extra credit is offered. I recommend her.
thinking about this class makes me want to cry
Ms. Szpunar is extremely difficult. Do not take this class if you're worried about GPA. However, I have no doubt in my mind that I know more chemistry than anyone taking another teacher even though I only received a B. She is a fantastic teacher and really pushes her students to be the best possible.
I love Dr. Szpunar. She is so nice and really wants you to succeed but you have to put the work in. Must do the homework that she assigns and def get the book and solutions manual those will save your life. A is possible but you gotta work.
Attendance wasn't mandatory but I would highly recommend going just to hear how she thinks and what she expects. She repeats things that will be on the exams. Uses short hand a lot, which was confusing. Otherwise, she expects a lot of work from the student. Gives partial credit for exams.
This class ruined my life so bad and is making me decide not to do pre med. It is the hardest class i have ever taken in my whole life. Szpunar thinks that this is the only class we are taking. She thinks that all we should do is orgo orgo orgo. I do have a life Dr. Szpunar. Tried to avoid this class with her and try to get a different professor.
Carole is actually a great professor, contrary to what you have heard from many. Organic chemistry is a hard class, no professor is going to hold your hand through it. She will teach you the material clearly and answer any of your questions.
PROS knows material well. go to her office hours, she is very helpful. CONS To do well, must know material so well you can race through accurately, and get to the ample EC Lectures are only helpful if you already know material. Otherwise worthless. Tests are nearly ALL fill in blanks and very little partial credit given. CUMULATIVE FINAL
Dr. Szpunar is one of those timeless folks who just knows how to teach. The class is extremely easy to do well in: do all the homework problems, and you get an A. Don't, and you can still do well, but it's tougher. Her lectures are engaging and thoroughly enjoyable, everyone who is capable of doing premed adores her.
It's a trap! Lecture are amazing, tests are pretty hard, quizzes are easy, but oh... here comes the final and bammmmm, does she really expect us to know this? Dropped from an A- to a C+ due to the final. GO TO CLASS.
Dr. Szpunar is an amazing person. She's a great lecturer and she wants her students to do well. However, she wants to make sure everyone EARNS the grade they receive. The trick is, DO EVERY SINGLE HOMEWORK PROBLEM. So far, I like her and am doing well, but have heard nothing but horror stories about her final, so we'll see how that goes.
Great teacher, made Organic Chemistry very understandable. You need to do the homework or you will have a very hard time passing. Tests aren't tough, just long which makes them hard to confidently finish. Expect weekly quizzes. Does give extra credit problems on quizzes and tests. accepts homework for 5% boost to your grade.
This is a hard class. A 55% is considered a C. That being said, Dr. Szpunar is the best orgo lecturer out there. Quizzes every week during discussion and 4 tests total with extra credit opportunities on every test. Very helpful during office hours. In order to pass, you MUST WORK HARD. There is no way to cheat your way through this. Take her
Dr. Szpunar is easily the most notoriously difficult orgoprof at loyola. However, the key to doing well in her class is doing every single one of her recommended practice problems. If you do that, and understand nomenclature, you will pass with flying colors and learn a lot. shes an amazing person, and wants students to do well and earn their grade
Comparable to a morsel of bitter chocolate--class had bitter undertones, but Carole still, was, in fact, chocolate. Incredible lectures on her part, but expect to work your tail off ten times over. Show confidence and never give up, as she has done, in order to win her respect, maybe. Prepare to embark on part I of the battle of a lifetime.
You learn a lot from her, but she is the hardest grader ever. Gives little to no partial credit, not a friendly person to talk to, but she's very knowledgeable. Pop quizzes in discussion. Do practice problems. Exams are hard and long, hw problems should help. Only take her if you're willing to put in 150% of you time into this class.
Szpunar is a really great woman, but her class is HARD. She is willing to help, and her lectures are okay, but her tests? Extremely difficult. Her final? Next to impossible. There are pop quizzes to help, and a small extra credit assignment, but the only way to get a good grade is to study your butt off.
Dr. Szpunar's class is challenging, but I learned a lot. Her lectures are quick and on a Powerpoint, but she provides a lot of resources and tips for how to do well in her class. You definitely have to do all the book problems, but Dr. Szpunar is approachable in office hours and genuinely wants students to learn and do well.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. HER QUESTIONS FOR TESTS ARE TOUGH AND EXAMS ARE LONG. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. DO NOT !!!
Dr. S is the BEST plain and simple. I came into this class scared out of my mind. But honestly, it wasn't that bad. Just do the hw problems, spend at least two hours everyday, and make a toolbox sheet at least a week before. Don't wait until the last minute! The tests are hard, but very doable if u put in the time. The final isn't bad.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is condescending and unapproachable. She thinks it's hilarious that her tests and final are impossible. I received an A in orgo 1, but got a C in her class after doing three times as much work. Seriously, DO NOT TAKE HER.
Spunzar is a great lecturer, and she's a funny person but she is very difficult when it comes to academics. Her quizzes and midterms are doable as long as you do the homework problems, go to class, and read. Her final though is a killer.
Szpunar is by far the hardest Orgo Prof at Loyola. She is very strict on grading tests, but also very clear on what she expects of you on her tests. 3 tests total and a final. Tests are very hard, but manageable as long as you keep up with material. Szpunar is helpful in office hours. Take her if you want to learn a lot and willing to work!
Szpunar is the hardest orgo professor at Loyola. Do all of the homework and don't fall behind. She has discussions where we take quizzes and ask questions. She is helpful during office hours. If you put in the work you will be fine! I wasn't great a chem 101/102 and I like orgo a lot more! Must be willing to put in the time!
Her lectures are interesting and she gives you some good pointers, but her tests are incredibly hard. She will test you on all of the material in the book regardless if it was covered in class or not. She's an incredibly tough grader and takes points off or marks questions completely wrong over small mistakes. There are better orgo professors.
Szpunar is by far the hardest and best Orgo professor at Loyola. She is very clear on what she expects on her tests and her tests are very hard. Regardless who you take, you have to keep up with the material. Do NOT fall behind, and do NOT try to cram. Her office hours are great although they may be full of dry humor, she is excellent at explaining
Avoid at all costs. Always gave me anxiety by how intimating she was and her tests give you even more anxiety.
Szpunar is a great teacher. The material is damn hard, but she does a good job off repeating important material until it goes through your head. Definitely need to read the book and do the homework practice.
Carol is amazing. She's engaging and really knows everything there is to know about organic chemistry. I have no idea why she has such a bad reputation because she's a great professor. Yes the tests are hard and she challenges you but is never unreasonable. You're not going to find an easy orgo class no matter what and you'll truly learn in szpunar
Szpunar is a great lecturer and truly knows orgo, however, this class is extremely difficult. She throws the hardest questions she can think of on exams and grades very very hard. Passable class but beware
BEST ORGO TEACHER EVER. GREAT CLASS. REALLY EASY AND FUN. TAKE FOR THE EASY A
Most difficult class I've ever taken. Constant stress for no reward. I came out of this class learning next to nothing because I was so desperate just to pass. Too much information for a single semester - every time you think you've finally caught up you're thrown a boat load of new information. Impossible tests, heavily time constrained.
Absurdly hard class but possible to pass. Dr. Szpunar is a very tough grader and fast lecturer but at the same time really does want you to learn orgo. The class is the hardest thing I've ever taken but Szpunar will prep you very well for the MCAT. Do every single problem she assigns.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Szpunar doesn't make it any easier. She essentially just reads off the powerpoints. Discussion is the only part of the course where she takes time to actually solve and practice problems.
Dr. Szpunar is one of the hardest professors for organic chemistry. She is a great lecturer and her discussions are helpful. Be sure to ask questions and go to office hours. DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS!!!! I never liked regular chemistry, but liked orgo more. Try to do a little bit everyday and you will be fine!!
Szpunar really wants you to learn this material. However, be ready to learn absolutely EVERYTHING outside of lecture. I stopped going halfway through the semester and ended with a B. Tough grader and gives little to know partial credit. Go to office hours so she knows your face/name, and shes way more likely to help you out. Go to discussion!!
Carole Szpunar is by far the worst professor I have ever came into contact with. Yes she is smart, she knows what she is teaching (she has a PHD). But she can't teach it. She yells at her students, which is fine and a bit entertaining but sure doesn't help you learn. Her tests are humanly impossible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
I've never worked so hard for a class and gotten so little out of it. Constant stress and anxiety. Tests are impossible unless you're a chemistry genius. She yells at her students as if she expects that will help you learn. If you want to pass, you have to make this class your life. AVOID!!
Orgo is a hard subject to begin with and isn't for everybody. As long as you read the textbook before class every day and do all the practice problems you will be able to pull of a B or even an A. Keep pace with the class because you do not want to fall behind.
This has to be your only hard class. Which if you are bio/premed then it prob won't be. The material is not hard but Szpunar does not allow realistic time to master the skills and she introduces new challenging problems on exams. She covers 6 addntl chpts than other profs and there is a large disconnect between testing & prep materials
Shes just kinda bad at her job. No examples done in class, but tests are all short answer problems. And since theres no structured homework, theres no way of knowing whats going to be on the tests.
Her exams are difficult but studying VERY hard every day helps. She offers around 18 points of extra credit on exams, quizzes, and the final. She isn't a great explainer b/c she yells more than helps (but she will get around to answering the question). Only way to pass is to do every problem in the book over and over & form study groups.
She is the most intimidating professor to approach when it comes to asking questions or going to office hours. She responds by yelling at her students, but even with this her intentions are good. She's vague with everything: HW, exams, quizzes, and lectures. Her exams are not impossible but her grading is tough.
The level of difficulty she set her exams do not correspond to the level of integrity of her lectures and class discussions .Carole Szpunar is unfit to be lecturing such a complex science subject, vital for the education of students pursuing a medical career, and is truly undeserving of title "professor".
Difficult professor with tough, LONG exams. Practice and get fast! I've never finished any of her exams on time, but luckily she does give plenty of bonus questions that help a little. Doesn't really assign homework, so you're kinda on your own to practice the material. Lectures are helpful but LOTS OF OUTSIDE WORK IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
Dr. Szpunar is a very intelligent professor but her intelligence gets in the way of teaching her course. Most of the concepts discussed are only briefly mentioned and exams are very challenging. Don't ask her questions, if so, be prepared for a lecture about why it is you don't understand something when she "clearly" just talked about.
Dr. Szpunar is a great lecturer. She really knows how to explain things all you have to do is pay attention. Her tests are very difficult but with lots of practice you can get an A on them. Visit her during office hours she really appreciates the effort. Her quizzes are a completely different story though, they are unnecessarily hard.
Worst professor I have ever had in my entire career at Loyola. I got an A in 224 with another professor and half the amount of stress. She killed my GPA. I have been so worried about my grades now in every class ever since her. Taking classes are no longer enjoyable because I am just so stressed trying to raise my GPA now.
Dr. Szpunar is an incredible lecturer. Her lectures are intended to expound on the reading, so you have to do the reading before class. Her exams are hard only if you have not put the time in to truly integrate the material. The questions are hard if you have only seen the material a few times before. You have to put in a lot of effort!!
People are crazy for thinking she isn't the best. Szpunar knows what she is doing and if you don't understand something, she is willing to help clarify the material. I went to May's and Osners lectures one time, and boy I was lost. Their exam are REALLY BAD. AVOID THEM! For Szpunar study your notes and do practice problem and you will be set!!
It won't be an easy class if you're not used to the level difficulty that the class possess. She wants her students to succeed but you will definitely need to spend time out of class learning everything to be able to do well. Would 100% take her again.
She basically teaches straight from the textbook so it depends on whether or not you can learn like that. Orgo is going to hard no matter who you take. She requires you to turn in homework every class but it's for your benefit so that you're practicing what you're learning. Just make sure you stay on top of what you're learning in class.
Szpunar is a solid choice for orgo. Her exams are very long and fast paced so be prepared to work quickly on exams. She is a fair grader and very accessible during office hours. I always found her quizzes to be unnecessarily hard but they did little damage to you grade. The textbook is your best friend, use it.
I was doing fairly well in this class up until the final. She was a very fair grader on the tests and was the best chemistry professor I've had in terms of how she explains things. However her grading on the final was much stricter than it had been on the tests. Every person I knew in my class's grade dropped an entire letter after the final.
Dr. Szpunar is THE BEST orgo professor you can take- she is just misunderstood. She has really dry humor but understand when it seems she's being mean she is just being funny. The best way to pass this class is to review the sections she went over immediately after, and be prepared on the latest material for a pop quiz. Lots of EC on tests.
She's a decent teacher but her class and her tests are pretty hard. She can seem intimidating but in reality she's very nice. There are only 3-4 tests each semester, and in Orgo 2 that's the only thing in the gradebook. If you take this class, you're going to have to work hard.
People who complain about her class are likely people who don't try. The course is inherently difficult and if you plan on going to grad school don't expect courses to be as easy as intro classes.
Orgo is hard regardless of who you take but Carole is amazing. Highly recommend reading the textbook and taking notes before lecture so that your lecture notes can just be the points emphasized from the reading. HW not collected in 224, but she still recommends doing problems throughout the semester. Overall super hard but Carole is fantastic!
Boy, does she make you work for it. True, if you score high in her class you really, really do know your subject but boy does she make you work for it. It's safe to say that you need to just memorize and learn as much as you can. If she says it or its in the textbook, memorize. Lots of E.C. on tests but she tests you on EVERYTHING!
Just avoid. Take with someone else. Avoid.
Just AVOID. There are other profs to choose from.
Her lectures are clear and concise, but there are many specific things she expects you to know. Tests are unnecessarily difficult especially the final bc they are nothing compared to midterms. Her grading is harsh especially bc she rarely gives partial credit. Too little time for too long exams.
Orgo is overall an extremely difficult subject, but Szpunar makes you work for it. Exams are fair and maintain the same format each time but the pop quizzes are difficult. If you take her prepare to do 1-2 hours of orgo each night. You really will know your stuff after taking her.
Worst chemistry professor at Loyola! Just avoid the stress about your GPA because her lectures are useless since she lectures the same style as the book is laid out. She is very unapproachable and doesn't know how to communicate well with students. Her final is also unreasonable since it dictates the entirety of your final grade.
Dr. Szpunar is a good teacher but her tests are too long and difficult, especially the final. Plus, she does not give a lot of partial credit. For the summer, her quizzes are planned unlike in the regular semester. She seems unapproachable but she is not, once you get used to her somewhat abrasive personality. I felt that she prepared me for orgo2
Szpunar makes you work for your grade but she prepares you for what will be on the exam. She offers a lot of extra credit on tests and quizzes so that helps your grade a lot. For summer, its 4 quizzes, midterm, and final. Orgo is hard and you need to study on your own but after her class, you will really know your stuff. I would take her again.
Carole is hilarious, she is a very high energy person and super funny. Her lectures are really straightforward, right out of the book. Honestly, this is refreshing and makes it pretty easy. Obviously orgo is hard but she makes it pretty accessible imo.
I was scared of taking Dr. Szpunar for orgo, however, what people say about her being hard is not true. I took this class in the summer and if I would put in the work, I would've probably gotten say the least a B+.Spzunar follows powerpoint presentations so be prepared to learn the material by yourself cause she just basically clicks through slides
Definitely avoid and do not take her! Her quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and often have material we did not even cover. She is one of the most unapproachable teachers, and is very unfriendly. She does not even give partial credit, and if your answers aren't exactly as she wants you loose all credit. AVOID!
Honestly, she's not as bad as people are saying she is on here. She does go pretty fast but if you're struggling just go to office hours. Her quizzes though, especially towards the end of the semester are extremely hard so be prepared for that. Get to know her and she's not that bad I promise.
Her tests are incredibly difficult and nothing like the examples on her slides or the problems in our book. Very unfair grading and tests are way too lengthy for the time frame we are given. Do not take her if you want to salvage your GPA. There are much better professors out there to take
DO NOT TAKE! She is one of the worst professors I have ever encountered and is very rude to her students. Do not even bother asking questions because she will respond yelling at you and make you feel worthless. Definitely do not take
HORRIBLE! Her tests are ridiculously difficult and too long for time frame. Not only that but her grading is harsh and unfair. Would not retake a class with her
WORST TEACHER AT LOYOLA! Completely disrespectful and doesn't give you a chance do even do good in the class. For your own sake avoid her
There are far better professors out there! Save yourself
I honestly gave this professor the benefit of the doubt, but she is just mean. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions and won't even answer them, she just tells you to look it up. She takes off points on things I should've gotten right. She will constantly tell people to drop. Good luck ever talking to her. Save yourself.
I never thought all the horrible things I have heard about her were true but they are. Never have I encountered such a mean and nasty teacher who makes you feel dumb and stupid for asking questions. No student deserves to feel like that
Orgo is hard. But Carole makes it harder. Instead of trying to make a hard topic accessible, she tries to show off how smart she is. She throws in information chapters ahead, tells us the book is wrong and to do it her way, or adds info that is completely irrelevant. Her exams are super long, so work fast. Good luck if you have her. Pass the class.
One of the hardest orgo teachers at Loyola. Very unapproachable, and throws curve balls for every exam. Exams are very heavily curved but it won't save your GPA. Quizzes are impossible the whole class gets 3/32's. She says they don't effect your grade but they do! I'm a 4.0 student and this ruined my GPA, my first terrible grade. Final is 20 pages
This class was the biggest nightmare of my entire life and destroyed my gpa, I've never had such a terrible teacher or experience in my entire life
There are a lot of things I really respect about Dr. Szpunar. She clearly wants her students to do well. An absurdly fast grader. Like after an exam, next class she hands them back graded: do check for grading mistakes! As a scientist, she is passionate about each contributor to the course content receiving their due respect. Wonderfully Feminist.
Not really sure how she has any good reviews to be honest, she is one of the most conceited professors who I have ever encountered and doesn't seem to enjoy helping her students. Good luck if you end up having her
Don't understand all of the negative reviews but she really isn't a bad teacher at all. Her powerpoints are straight from the book so the book is definitely needed. Tests are long and can be difficult but if you do a lot of practice problems and really understand the material you should be fine. Spent about 6 hours a week studying so put in work!
Dr. Szpunar is very well-educated and a good person. She just has a tough-love vibe but shes always willing to help during office hours. Expect a pop quiz every week, didn't read the book just went off lectures, studied about 5 hours a week. Quizzes are similar to exams. Exams are long so go fast. A is doable if you just commit the time!
I came into this class giving Dr. Szpunar the benefit of the doubt despite hearing the terrible rumors about her. But, I found that all those rumors were true. She belittles her students even though she encourages them to ask questions. Dr. Szpunar is the most unapproachable professor I have ever had the misfortune to meet at Loyola. AVOID!!!!!
will test you on topics before you learn them in class. no joke. will also put down the wrong information on powerpoints. I'm lucky I go beyond to learn the material but a lot of students dont have the time to read the entire textbook and guess what she "might" ask when its nowhere in the powerpoint. 2 stars bc she grades fairly
We have no lectures at all and we are left to teach ourselves. She rarely answers emails and when she does, it's short and is pretty abrasive. She sends out 70-120 slide PowerPoints a week and it's impossible to keep up with the schedule she wants us to adhere to. Super hard and lot of work, you definitely need a study group.
Please avoid. Carole is the worst professor I've had at Loyola and is very mean and unwilling to help students. She has an arrogant attitude and her tests are beyond difficult. She literally destroyed my GPA. Do yourself a favor and find another professor
I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt, because Organic Chemistry is a hard class in general. That was an absolute mistake. Professor Szpunar is the worst professor I've ever had and she is not helpful at all. For an online class she only provides us powerpoints and a word document with her commentary. She doesn't record discussion.
Not a good online class. Asynchronous. No lectures but 3 hour discussions every week... but her Wifi cuts out OFTEN. I honestly wish Loyola would help her out with that. Grading is fair but I taught myself everything I know this semester. And I mean everything. She seems to care about her students but it is poorly shown through lack of teaching.
he #1 worst teacher I have taken in my history of college. Since online bc of covid, this teacher refused to hold lectures since her "wifi wasn't good enough". She also would not post pre-recorded lectures, so we literally taught ourselves an entire course of organic chemistry. Rude over email and it was clear she didnt read the emails we sent.
The worst professor I've ever had. She literally doesn't teach as there are no lectures. You have to teach yourself the material using power points. She claims to care about her students but you might as well not have a professor since everything must be taught on your own. Orgo is difficult but she makes it ridiculous. Avoid at all costs.
She is horrible, with this class going online. She doesnt have us meet for class but expects us to show up for discussion for a block of 3 hrs. And Im only scheduled for like an hour. I hate her class, doesnt give partial credit, marks it wrong even if it is correct. I have no motivation for her class she puts in no effort to help us do well.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Carole is by far the worst professor this school offers, and herr attitude makes it even worse. She is extremely unhelpful especially during covid times, grades very unfair and has the worst and most arrogant attitude. Save yourself and do what you can to avoid having to take this class with her.
Dr. Szpunar is the worst professor I've had in my life. She refused to hold lectures because of her bad internet and so we had to teach ourselves everything from her PowerPoints. She's also rude when asking questions and even told me I wasn't prepared to take this class even though I got an A- in CHEM223. Avoid her at all costs.
She is terrible! Just the most ridiculous professor. Why is she still allowed to teach? She does nothing. No prez no notes nothing! and then her exams are impossible. She is disgusting! Seriously just look at all these reviews of her.
This is the most disgusting professor at Loyola and its well known. Theres university's that take care of its students and success and by keeping this prof Loyola is showing the opposite. Just blindly goes over things straight from the book and the exams are impossible to complete. Just terrible and disgusting. Terrible demeanor as well. Just shame
The hardest Professor you can ever take. This class ruined my GPA, I know Orgo is supposed to be hard but nothing should be this hard, exams are extremely long and there is not enough time to complete all the questions, her slides are straight from the book and she goes through all her slides extremely fast. Will make you rethink your major.
I find it absolutely ridiculous that this professor is still allowed to teach. I took the W for this class because I was putting in 4 hours a day studying for this class and still could pass a single test. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA.
This class literally was a nightmare, and I had to withdrawl it was so bad. Her test are impossible, and good luck even trying to finish. No matter how hard you study or the work you put in, it does not pay off with her at all! Good luck.
To people saying you can get an A if you study hard with her are WRONG! Spend at least 2-3 hours studying per day and her test were still soul crushing. Half of her content is so far off from the material in the book and it doesn't help that she has a nasty attitude. AVOID!
TOUGH but she's clear of her expectations. Prepares you for the rest of your career in STEM and you'll leave more knowledged in Ochem. Gives lots of opportunities for bonus pts on exams since they are difficult. Gave our class chances on redos on parts of tests for its back. Also quite the expert on chem, very smart prof. GPA might take a hit tho.
Take the time to get to know her. She comes off strong in lecture, esp in the first few weeks, but she cares about her students and especially those who are trying. Unfortunately, her tests are soul crushing and harder than the practice problems in the book. Ochem is hard, but those tests were punishment. She's very helpful in office hours.
I took her class and tried so hard to pass. Now here I am seeing my final grade and depressed beyond belief to see that I have to retake Orgo. If you are unsure if youll pass at any point before the drop deadline, I would recommend dropping because this feeling isnt worth it.
This class was an absolute joke. I have taken many difficult STEM classes and passed with an A. Many of those classes were harder than Orgo, material wise, but Szpunar makes Organic chemistry much harder than it actually is, I even managed to teach the material to friends that go to other schools but barely passed her class. Don't take this class.
The teacher does not care. The class is completely asynchronous and she does not teach. If you email her questions she will tell you you're wasting your time and her time. If you have to be naturally gifted at chemistry to do good in this class. She recommends 2 textbooks. Buy them both and use both practice problems at the end. She pulls fromthem.
The way she lectures is unnecessarily loud and has this rude and condescending "you should know this already" tone. She hates answering any questions. Orgo is obviously hard, so you are going to have to put in the work no matter who you take. Read the textbook, use youtube for help, and DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS! You will be ok, but don't rely on her.
Szpunar is by far the worst professor I have ever encountered at Loyola. People with that type of nasty attitude shouldn't be allowed to teach. This has nothing to do with the difficulty of the class material itself. She is just straight-up mean and unbelievably disrespectful. Protect your dignity and AVOID!
HORRIBLE HUMAN BEING! I had medical issues that prevented me from being able to take an exam and she wouldn’t let me make it up even though I had a doctor's note.
Super unapproachable. If you have any doubt you might pass, drop IMMEDIATELY and retake w a different professor for a better grade. Trust me -- it'll look better than a C- popping up on your transcript and destroying your GPA. If she is your only choice left due to a bad registration time, postpone orgo a semester. You really want to avoid her.
This class was a nightmare, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0/10
I have never worked harder to get a B+. Take someone else if you can. She breezes through her slides way too fast, then gets irritable when people ask questions. Tests are way too long.
I honestly think that Dr. Szpunar is a good teacher. If you put in effort, and understand that this course is going to be difficult, you will be fine. She does move fast, but she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I was ambivalent to take her course after reading the reviews, but I really enjoyed her class!
People tend to love her or hate her. She is very strict on grading. Exams were long but curved. There's extra credit at the end of exams, but they're credit or no credit. She's helpful in office hours, but she is very blunt with people and kinda mean sometimes. Her lectures are solid but fast. Lots of people don't pass her class the first time.
She's not that bad; she said that a lot of people got an A on the first exam. However, I found her exams long 5 pgs in 50 min-not counting the 3 pgs for extra credit. She just reads slides which are basically the book. The class is 100% tests or quizzes and she doesnt drop any. Grading scale for an A- is 92 while other professors have it at 83.
Dont let the reviews scare you. I got an A on a test despite getting a bunch wrong. Her tests are long though. She has a mean tone but she's not mean. She tells you she's proud of you and to keep pushing; she definitely pays attention to improvement and effort. Her saying shes proud was the strength I needed to push through the last exam and final.
She def. is the worst. Doesnt give you resources at all because "you can find them yourself online," then proceeds to place problems on the exam that you'd have to hack into the deep web to find. Exams are harder than any questions in the back of the book. She doesnt drop any exams or quizzes. Graded only on tests, quizzez, and final.
I'm pretty sure all the people who gave her a 5 were on hallucinogens or something. I came in with an open mind not letting the reviews scare me, but she provides ZERO resources and always says to look up problems yourself. She LITERALLY just reads the slides. The test and quiz questions are soul-crushing because you've never seen them before.
Spunzar is a very difficult grader. Lectures are very fast and a lot of information. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing practice problems for every lecture. She will add exam material to the exam the day before. You have to be ready for everything. I also RECOMMEND asking her for the Wade textbooks because that is were the problems come from 3 exams + final
Does not give participation points, got a lot of points taken off for minor mistakes. Overall, she knows what shes saying and is knowledgeable, but her exams are TERRIBLE and her grading is the WORST. I wish I wouldve dropped her class. Never taking her again.
Szpunar comes off mean to many people but she is a nice person, I just think she doesn't really care about teaching people who don't already know what they're doing. The first 2 exams are decent, the 3rd exam is TERRIBLE this is where so many people get messed up grade wise and it's too late to drop the course. Just be aware that it is DIFFICULT!!!
I took Szpunar for orgo 1 and had a very tough time, but she's a lot better for orgo 2. You can waive the final exam and in general she is a lot more approachable. Orgo is still a difficult class but most people I know who took her for 1 did better in 2 with her.
She is not the best help with questions and will cut you off in the middle of a sentence. The exams weren't too bad but she is an extremely tough grader. I didn't enjoy her teaching style but her slides helped me prepare for Orgo B.
You're probably going to do terribly, lol. I was a straight-A student until this class when I got a C-. You're graded on only tests and quizzes. Doesnt provide any resources. I studied and did practice problems and while I did get an A on one exam, it wasnt enough. The average for one of the quizzes was like 10% and she doesnt drop anything.
Great person once you get to know her and her know you. Only graded by exams and quizzes so definitely show up to class. Grading is TOUGH, she expects you to be absolutely perfect. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She may seem super harsh but just push through and ask for her help. She will give practice problems like the exam so 100% got to lecture.
She has a problem where she needs to feel special and does this by using demeaning tone accusing students and ruining their GPA. This professor ruins any chances of gettin into a MD program. This university will be known to only ruin futures if it doesn't do something about professors like these. As for the professor Karma is real
Professor Carole has a tough grading system, but engaging with her teaching style can pay off. Definitely use resources like unstuckstudy ai to prepare for exams - the practice questions are a lifesaver. Just be ready to work hard!
