She really is a great teacher I'mm going to take her for 1302 too!
Amazing teacher. She really loves literature and her excitement makes students excited. very discussion-oriented class
She is great! Really cool and down to earth, and gets her students interested. I thoroughly enjoyed her class and if my courses required 1302 I would have taken her for that too. My sister and i took her class together and both thought she rocked!
She is a great teacher! I loved her in 1302 and she is very down to earth and tells it like it is. She loves teaching and asking questions! take her!
shes an awesome teacher!! i have her for 1301 now and am taking her in 1302 in the spring. shes very intellegent and funny. she can laugh at herself and the class. i definately recommend taking her class!!! YOU WILL HAVE A BLAST!
I really don't recommend her at all. She's really anal and is all about the detail. "I'm a very strict professor." Straight from her mouth. She has a good personality and all but I hated her as a professor
Ms. Ruiz is a cool teacher but i agree with the other comments, she is really rude with her students sometimes. she is very straight forward.. if shes having a crappy day she blames it on you.. so dont piss her off.. lots of response papers and 3 major papers .. lots of reading..if you work hard u can get an easy B.
This professor is amazing! as long as you do your work, show up and show respect and interest, SHE WILL LOVE YOU. She is very easy to understand AND get along with. She is younger so she understands what it is like to be young. Best professor and most fun professor I have ever had. English and writing is my worst subject and she made it seem fun!
There is a lot of reading and reading responses BUT if you do the work and read you will get an A. Personally the comments are right, if she is in a good mood, then the class runs smoothly. If she is pissed, OMG, a total witch! The good outweighs the bad so, if you can't find another teacher, she not so bad.
I loved her class, Idk why she has bad reviews. She only got mad when students slacked to read, or if you didn't attend class regularly(then she'd cancel class, ha!) But she is younger, so that makes her fun. Cool activities, off topic and your always laughing WITH her. She was funny, and made class enjoyable. Take her, shes fun.
It?s all quite simple?read, do the work and you?re fine. I?m not sure where all the comments listed below me are coming from but my only conclusion is that those who disliked her simply never did their work and/or never followed instruction. She?s probably one of the only professors I know that is passionate about her job and the process of helpi
Very helpful and kind. She is willing to work with you if you make an effort to talk to her. If you read the selections and come to class you will not have a problem.
She one of those people that you either love or hate. There is nothing in between. Personally, I am enjoying her class. Reading HW is assigned, but pages are short. Also, 3 essays. As long as you meet the deadlines and participate in discussions the class will go smoothly.
Awesome teacher! I wish I could take her for all my english classes.... If you do your work and read her assignments you will not have an issue getting an A. She expects you to do what you are assigned and that is that... Definitely one of my favorite teachers
Great teacher, do your hw, participate in class and you'll do fine. If you don't than let's hope you have a backbone for her bad side.
she rocks ms ruiz is the best
Do your work and assigned task and you should not have any problems. However, her attitude is a bit unprofessional and sometimes lacks repect. Other than that she is diverse in her teaching methods and you can learn a lot by participating in class.
she was an awesome teacher, loved her only had 3 essays and always has extra credit events! she grades pretty easily i got A's on all my papers! u MUST read in order to pass her quiz's dont get on ur cell phone or she will kick ur ass out> she was always sending emails to make sure u were up to date with everything> n very passionate about her job
Not very helpful. Felt as if I would raise my hand to ask question to better understand, she would call you out in front of class for not already knowing answer. Hated every second.
Took her Latin Literature class and loved her....although she is emotional at times she keeps her class interesting and tries to get students involved! Make sure you read what she assigns she gives reading quizzes..her papers are fairly easy and no test!!
Took an on-line literature course with her. She was not very helpful and took forever to give feedback on assignments. She assigns a lot of readings and is not very helpful in answering questions. Give very vague instructions and no details. Can be disrespectful in responding to you, if you ever reach her. I regret I took her class!
Professor Ruiz is extremely intelligent and passionate about what she does. She will help you understand the meaning of critical analysis reading and writing. I had no idea my potential! She helped me realize my potential and she can help you realize yours. You will LEARN! If you want to be challenged you will LOVE LOVE LOVE her class!
I took her Latino Literature and i sincerely regret it. Unless you are an English major you will have a tough time in her class. Class discussions were difficult to participate in because Professor Ruiz had a tendency to be uninviting in her demeanor. She did not provide adequate instruction on the major essays nor was she very helpful when asked.
Professor Ruiz is a cool teacher. She gets you to appreciate literarure. She can have an attitude sometimes. She does make herself available to you for help even though she has a busy schedule.
Very cool prof who is passionate about what she teaches. She will help you to enjoy literature even if you hate it. Mostly essays and some quizzes and a final.
shes ok
By no means is she an "educator". An emotional woman. Makes rude remarks and provides little help in actual writing improvement. A major let down. But it's cc
She's very intimidating and out there! She'll tell you like it is and is very clear on what she expects and how she feels. She can be helpful but personally I was too scared of the woman to even ask for help. The class can be VERY demanding. I would take her if you want a challenge and an interesting professor, but this class is no easy A!
I took her class online and really liked it. She always answers your emails, but she's slow grading papers. If you take her online be prepared to participate in discussion posts, 3 major essays, final exam, and 2 response papers every week. It wasn't that hard :). I took it in a minimester. If you take it in a regular semester it might be harder.
It?s not fair to call professors emotional, we all are. It?s her job to answer questions, so just ask. She is a nice person and respects your opinion, if you speak up. I had her a few years ago and wish I?d handled something differently - Sorry CR? :/
Demanding teacher, at first I thought she disliked me, but things changed later on, I worked my butt off on those papers she assigned and got a sold B, and i'm happy with it.
She is definitely a very straightforward teacher. She gives a lot of work but It isn't too bad you just have to read and write like never before. It's college what do you expect. I can say that English is not my best subject but she made it enjoyable.
I took her Latin Lit class and it was very interesting! She's quite funny yet rude. Make sure you turn in your work on time. Participation is a must. There's a group presentation, response papers and a few essays. I would take her class!
Definitely a tough cookie and very demanding of her students BUT i wouldnt want it any other way. We are there to learn and she is a teacher who is beyond passionate about her role as an educator. As long as the student completes their assignments and truly puts forth efforts, their should not be any issues passing.
VERY DEMANDING AND ANNOYING. I used to love english up until i took her class. she grades papers extremely difficult and she'll only be satisfied if its her own work. she never accepts creativity and always needs an explanation for any twists written. not the brightest one
She gives a lot of homework. She is very rude and emotional. She will call you out in front of the whole class. If you're a shy person I would not take this class. If you do not read before the class she will make you leave, and will mark you absent and she counts those, if you miss more than three then she starts taking off points on your grade.
Very rude and emotional teacher. Gives lots of work, doesn't help you out as much, tough grader, and makes you feel stupid as if everything you're doing is not right. Wants everything her way. Don't slack off or fail. You have to work for your grade. Overall the class was entertaining but didn't like the teacher.
she is very sarcastic and could be rude times yea she is kinda emotional. She wasn't a tough grader. took her two times and got 100 on final she does try to help alot in any way possible. gives extra credit too. I was shy and took this class felt out of place she requires alot of participation in class or gets mad. Materials boring though
Mrs. Ruiz definitely is passionate about English, which comes across in her lectures. As long as you show her respect at the very beginning, you won't have any problems with her. Turn in everything on time and you can make an easy A. Also keep your mouth shut if she is in a bad mood (which can be frequently).
Very critical but an easy grade. Be prepared to rewrite your thesis statements multiple times.
So far I have not encounter any rudeness from this professor. I think she is straightforward. By this time as a student the professor should not be holding your hand. She gives every opportunity to help but wants the student to put forth the effort. Learn how to use your own abilities and be critical in your thinking about literature and not her.
I learned a lot in this class.Though the class was online, the instructor go an extra mile to schedule face to face tutorial just to make sure the students understand the assignment. If you are ready to learn, I recommend Professor Ruiz for you. She is always ready to teach.
She is hard. Her expectations are very high on essay papers. The weekly assignments were easy, but her essay papers were very tough. Take her at your own risk.
I loved Ms.Ruiz. She is the best english professor I had ever had. If you go to all the classes and do all the work she asks, she will hand you an A. She is not afraid to speak her mind. Her papers are not hard but they are also not easy. You will learn a lot from her and she prepares you very well for future classes.
She was great. i took a Mini. a lot of the reviews said that she was strict and a hard grader. i dont think so. I was able to do well in her class and the only reason why i got a B was because i forgot to put 3 assignments in BOTH drop boxes. do the work and you wont be sorry. 3 essays, 5 RP and 5 DP. a few quizes and the final. Book is a necessity
Great teacher. Professor Ruiz keep this class fun and lively. Strict, but necessary. Daily quizzes but if you read the short stories you will pass. She also has three essays. Gives you a great insight on how to look at literature.
She is rude, extremely distant and offers little to no assistance. I still made an A in the class because the writing lab taught me. If seems as though she does not meet the qualifications to teach at a four year institution and perhaps she feels compelled to make everyone feel as though they are taking a senior level course. DO NOT BOTHER!
I took her class 2011 Summer mini and she was amazing. Decided to come back and rate because of the impact she made. Very funny and very helpful. So long as you show up and pay attention, you will be fine. She is available for assistance if need be and even let me borrow a book of hers. Loved her and would take a class of hers again if I could.
Prof. Ruiz has to be the toughest professor I have had. She treats students like they should know what to do. I didn't feel that I was learning so much as being tested all the time. She does make you work and get serious (6-8 paper, 8-10 pg paper). She knows her stuff and is funny. Very critical and does not like smartalics so don't try. She's cool
Amazing class and teacher!! If you are looking for an easy A, go else where. You will learn so much from Mrs. Ruiz but she means business so if you are just there for the grade don't even try. You have to buy the book, you have to read, you have to show up, you have to participate, and you have to do the work. Slackers: do not take this class.
I really enjoyed her class. It was fun to interact and hear her feed back. She is great at her job! I am actually planning on taking her again for American Lit this coming semester!
Extremely late with grading. Unorganized. Makes a lot of mistakes in grading. Her syllabus has spelling errors in it, which is not professional especially for an English professor. Takes ages to reply to e-mails. Don't take her, there's 100 other English professors in Lonestar.
Careless about students, as she's late 100% of the time when it comes to grading. You can e-mail her 100 times about it, and she would casually ignore you. No help whatsoever, very unclear on everything, not even sure she knows that she was teaching an online class at the time. Wouldn't take again, no one should either.
Be aware!!! Taking her class was a huge mistake. She's a very tough grader and provides zero insight as to why she deducts points. Class participation is a must along with writing long papers. Professor Ruiz shows zero urgency when it comes to grading papers, I am still waiting for her to grade my last paper which was turned in last week.
I wouldn't necessarily say she was a tough grader, but she did take off points for grammar and spelling errors. No surprise there, this is an English class after all. The exams were easy enough. She was terrible at getting papers graded to the point that she had to extend a deadline. Instructions weren't clear & expect a lot of writing assignments.
Tough Grader
She is a good professor, but she is tough, no-nonsense, and you're basically on your own. Also, there are ALOT of rules. Rules for attendance, papers, essays, participation, failing to do homework, conduct, communication, and who knows what else.
Really late review (took her class last spring semester), but when I took her class, it was very informative. She knows a lot about the subject and she really does a good job of explaining exactly what you need to know for the assignments. She is very reasonable and if you have trouble with anything, she will help you but she won't hold your hand.
Professor Ruiz class was easy. All you have to do is do the work and show up. Also if you have pretty decent grammar then you will be fine. Which you should have if you are in rolled in that class anyways. Take her if you are willing to work and not be lazy. She grades fair but she is always late on grading.
Takes forever to respond to emails, syllabus says 24 hour turn around on emails Most cases it was 3 days & up to a week before I got a response. Syllabus states she doesn't work after 3 on Fridays until following Monday, I find that to be an issue for online students who don't attend class online. Work assigned on Monday & due Friday night
As a person she is nice but she is very moody. Gives you homework everyday. Three essays, response papers. Not a tough grader as long you follow the instruction paper you'll do fine.
Good prof, just bad at replying to emails. I would take a different prof if English is difficult for you
It was very hard to concentrate in this class, and you never knew what to expect going into the class. I think she could be a little more compassionate to introverts and also more organized/time managed. She was, however, very funny and very quick to respond to emails.
Honest review, Professor Ruiz was not a bad teacher at all. You will write at least 1 paper per week, and often 2, and the final paper was a 12 page research essay. The class is as heavy workload and I think for a basic english class it is a little over the top. If you're major is something specific or related to english though, this is the teacher
I took online class. The first 4 weeks theres a lot of work to do but it slows down as you progress further into the semester. She opens work up 1 week at a time. Monday it opens and Friday at 5pm it closes. If you do everything you will pass with a A easily. I got 0 on 1 essay for not citing which dropped me from A+ to C+. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!
I took her 1302 class during the spring. She does not explain projects or homework's very well. She just hands them out and expects you to figure it out on your own. She also cancelled class a lot which made us get really behind. Also, expect to write a paper every week!
Get ready to do a lot of work. Teacher is nice, tells funnies stories, and sometimes gets off topic but it was an interesting class overall and I did learn how to properly cite different sources. Participate in class, complete your work on time and do the assignment correctly and you should pass. Phone use not tolerated in class.
I had her for 1301 and 1302 she's the best english professor I've ever had! People complained about the 3 essays and response papers every week but they were fairly easy and its nothing you wouldn't do in another class. She's very funny and really cares about her students. This class really goes in depth with citing and multiple writing formats!
Every time I emailed the professor asking any type of question, she responded very rudely which made me feel very dumb. Not that hard of a class, but I know that there are plenty of better english teachers at Lone Star.
I ended up dropping the class 2 weeks in. I was taking 2 summer courses at a time and her course was like an anchor to my leg. It probably would not have been that bad if she gave more time to do the assignments. Instead of Monday- Sunday she only gave Monday- Thursday.
Professor Ruiz is an amazing teacher and you will learn A LOT. Just do what she asks for she loves it when she sees students try their best and turning in all of their work!! remember just do what she asks for. That is all I did and ended up with an A in her class. Shes not a really tough grader trust me! im not as good as anybody else
She is a great teacher. A bad review of her said she's moody, but it's only towards the students who don't do their very minimal work. For hw we read something and spend the class discussing it with an easy pop quiz just to check that you read it. 2 essays- one 5-7 pg and one 10-12 it's really not that bad. She'll make you leave if you didn't read.
Professor Ruiz is very knowledgeable about English and gives great feedback on essays. Showing up and reading is very important to her. She gets very angry when lots of students dont read which can get pretty old, and she can have an attitude. Shes a great teacher overall, she just wants you to try your best and succeed.
horrible. don't take. I am very kind when messaging her, however she's very rude and shows no mercy or no empathy to her students. don't take her class.
Good teacher but sometimes may be a bit to bitter for my taste. don't expect to pass her class if you don't follow her specific instructions. I took her in march 2018 and her class had tons of work.
I don't understand why Professor Ruiz has so many bad reviews because honestly she is really good. She is NOT a tough grader. There are 3 major papers and a few mini papers (only a paragraph), so just follow the instructions and you will get an A. As for the readings, they are really short/simple and will discuss them or have a quiz. Look no more!!
Trust the comments here and dont make the mistake to enroll in her class. You are never gonna learn anything. She will make you feel like an ant with her comments, dare to ask a question because you will be humiliated. Does not matter how hard you work, she grades her papers almost at the end of the semester and you will never find out how you did
Just try & follow the instructions!
taking her online and already a hard class. SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER DO NOT TAKE HER.
she was not to bad. I took her online class she just grades rather hard. I have always been good in English, this class I passed with a C+. I had one 10 page essay APA format which she did not explain very well. If you want a fast paced class take her!
She is kind of mean and does not explain anything too well! She changes everything last minute. She also say's one thing, but does another. She will also make you feel very stupid when you ask a question.
Honestly, the worst professor I've had at Lone Star. I literally feel like I haven't retained any information from the class. She talks down on her students, and uses her knowledge to make you feel teeny tiny, which I think she does to make herself feel good. She changes due dates on major assignments only days before they are due.
Terrible class , do not take her , she would make you feel like you are pointless, takes forever to grade papers & she would miss class a lot , tough grader
Professor Ruiz wasnt horrible, but she was definitely not the best. Unfortunately she is very disorganized with her grading. Also anything sets her off, one minute she is happy the next minute shes very angry which is was unprofessional to say the least. However she is hilarious, and seems to care for her students to an extent.
She has so many negative reviews, but honestly she was not bad. 3 papers, 1 group presentation and reading assignments for quizzes in class. as long as you put work into your paper you will be fine! i suck at english but i did well. Sometimes she is a little unclear on assignments and due dates, but overall it was not bad.
Honestly maybe the worst professor Ive ever had at my college very rude doesnt respond to emails doesnt grade correctly or on time I took a class at lone star and my other professor something happen with him and I got her Will actually be reporting her to the dean with how terrible she is
Professor Ruiz online course, is simply her being passive and grading through "Turn it in", she doesn't give feedback or reply to emails of students. The course was her putting due dates and not helping or informing us about anything. Her class is easy but she makes no effort to help you what so ever.
The professor gave me a zero on an entire essay for forgetting to add in-text citations, on the FIRST essay of the year. You'd think you would just get a few points off the essay, but no I received a complete zero, so I basically wrote that essay for nothing. The grades are always put in late, and changes to due dates are always made last minute.
Great course. Gave clear instruction and followed the syllabus. Willing to listen and is understanding. Do the work. Keep up to date. Read instructions carefully. Easy A for hard work.
Basically she just says to look in the syllabus at the start of the semester to see due dates then you can never get in contact with her after that. Any attempt to email her will not get a response until a week or more later. The assignments are relatively easy but don't expect any help from her. Almost your entire grade comes from 3 essays.
After reading reviews on here I almost dropped the class; I'm glad I stuck it out. This was 8 Weeks Online. I expected to do work that was at college level, and my expectation was correct (don't expect a blow off). This class required some self-teaching, and there were long grade turnarounds. I achieved an A but I worked hard for it.
I took an 8 week class. I was doing good in the class the entire time I had a borderline A/B, however on the last essay it was not my best essay, but it was something and fulfilled half the requirements. However, this professor gave me a 0! That is unfair! Unfair grading on her part! DO NOT TAKE! Other people are saying it too scroll down.
I took this teacher online and she was not helpful at all and she assigned way too many essays back to back . I received zeros on my essays for the smallest errors. Dont take her !
I took her class because it was the lesser evil of the two options provided. Quizzes barely align with the info she provides, good luck. If you miss any in-text citations its a 0. Her discussions and CIRs are easy. Shes hard to reach and I wouldnt pick her class if I had better options.
Professor Ruiz, was tough but she wasnt that bad. It is hard for students with young kids, because you do have to read chapters every week for quizzes that on top of that, your working on essays. So it is overwhelming at times, but if you can stay ahead you should be fine. She wasnt that bad for my case, I just wish the quizzes had more time.
She doesn't care about the students learning, so if you have questions about your paper, go to the writing center because she won't help. She cancels class often and texts the group 5-10 before the class starts.
Professor Ruiz is a sweet person. However, she is not a good grader at all. There are 3 essays the entire semester along with a few mini papers. Not a single essay/mini was graded until the last three weeks of the course. It is frustrating because with the consideration that not all people are strong writers, there is no time for recovery so..
It wasn't that she was a bad professor, she seems nice through email, if she responds to your email. Assignments are due at 11:30 pm instead of 11:59. No big deal, but when your wifi cuts off and you are unable to turn in your assignment, or try to turn it in through email 8 mins late because of it, she WILL NOT take it. Wished she understood.
I took her this year and it wasn't that hard at all. Just make sure you know how to cite your work. If you cite wrong, she will give you a zero. You can ask her any questions if you need any help! Make sure you turn in everything on time!!!! She won't take late work! Trust me, just know how to cite and you'll do fine.
Doesnt care about u at all, she can forget stuff but u cant. when she forgets stuff she just cancels class and make a whole excuse why she or she will extend class because she messes up. All year she kept bumping up the points higher and higher but didnt add more work.. If you forget a lot or want a good teacher that cares about u dont take her
She Does not care about you, only about the money. She grades last minute. She never responds and if she does it always a "well too bad or figure it out" basically. Shell cancel class if shes late but if your late on anything or a little error straight 0 in the grade book. Oh and she kept raising the grade point higher and higher when it got closer
Prof. Ruiz is very clear on her expectations and the homework in her syllabus. Expect weekly reading and discussion boards, but they are always interesting and thought provoking. There were a few essays, but she makes you turn in a thesis first and gives good feedback on that - it's very helpful. Read and put effort into the work and you'll be ok
Do not get this professor. She is very unreliable! She expects you to complete all tasks on time. However, she doesn't grade ANYTHING until the last day of class. Once you turn in the assignment you are waiting for feedback to improve on your writing skills, but how can you when she does not grade on time. Very strict on students but not herself.
Shes really bad at replying to emails. The work load isnt awful, but you definitely need to do the readings, which are pretty interesting most of the time. Shes tough on citations and essay length. Shes also not flexible at all with due dates.
She's a cool person but is VERY sociable and doesn't really like when students aren't. Participation matters!! especially in class. 4 one pagers, 3 essays (essay 3 is 12 pages), 1 easy group project, final is meeting abt last essay. strict deadlines. Beginning of class quizzes over readings she does not let you do if late. Don't take if shy/quiet.
Do not pick this teacher!!!!! She is a very unreliable and doesn't grade until the end of the semester so you would not get any feedback. She is a very tough grader.
I took this class as an 8-week class, and I normally do really well. She grades really hard; I had a few missing assignments, and instead of helping me, she told me I should drop the class, and this was right before the last day to drop was. I asked her if I could have a few assignments reopened, and she ignored me.
Professor Ruiz is not a bad professor. I really enjoyed taking her class. However, if you are not a sociable person then I recommend not taking her class because participation is mandatory when it comes to group projects. It affects your grade heavily. Essays are pretty straightforward, make sure that you have a clear understanding on citations.
I took her as a 3 week mini mester one of the most easist classes i ever took she does assign a lot of papers 3-6 pages long however they were fairly easy as i got to choose my own topics overall great class
She can be flexible with due dates but it's rare. She also doesn't take constructive criticism very well, which resulted in some hostility sometimes. It wasn't a hard course overall, but it could've been better.
Do not expect any empathy from this professor. Only take if you have no other option. Proceed with caution and make sure you turn in assignments on time. There will be little to no leway to extensions on deadlines. Emails and text feedback is very poor and will only answer if the wind blows in the right direction. BEWARE!!!
The absolute worst, don't take her class.
Professor Ruiz's class is a mixed bag. While it can be challenging, using study aids like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can really help. Just be sure to stay on top of assignments and don't expect much feedback.
She is an excellent English teacher, but yes, does reply late to emails.
She really cared about our success. Great feedback, response time was pretty alright, provided us with good resources, and even extended a major deadline because some people were missing citations.. DO NOT FORGET IN TEXT CITATIONS! She was kind and encouraging.
Get ready to spend everyday to spend time to read and do your essays. 2 essays (3-5) pages 1 final essay (10-12) pages 2 response papers 5 quizes final exam Worst professor that I have took in Lone Star, she never sends email on time but if she does, she sends them before the deadline, she grades heavy on everything.
At the beginning of the course I didn't even know if I had a Professor. It takes her days to reply back and weeks to grade work. She doesn't compromise and WILL ignore your emails.
If there is another professor available, take them instead. She does not reply to emails as many have said, and takes forever to put grades in. Doesn't help that she has strict standards but you can't implement feedback for future assignments with no grade. No late work allowed, but shes fine with leaving you hanging for weeks on end.
I took the 8-week course over the summer and getting to review just now. If you have any passion for writing you'll be fine, but if you don't really like reading or writing like me it will take a lot to get into the flow of things. I always got points taken off for formatting, but she didn't really specify what exactly, feedback was fine otherwise.
She does care about student success however please be aware of the amount of work you have to put in for this class and time. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone who has a job or other not school related responsibilities. She has the tendency to not accept late work. You will fail if you cannot commit all your time to this class.
