Very demanding, but extremely motivating and caring.
She really is an amazing teacher. One of the great ones at our school.
Interesting, informative, demanding and likes soccer what more could you ask for&
The coolest teacher I ever had!
Love her enthusiasm
fabulous sense of humour, even made research methods interesting
One of the best teachers i've had! always making the class interesting
YOU GO GIRL!!
great teacher, and great to look at
passionate about psyc, great lectures, tests were brutal
Awesome teacher! always making class interesting and really trying to get us to learn! funny and very nice person
great

Ok teacher but never available for extra help. Always cancels office hours.
tough tests
awesome teacher!! I took this class as an elective but she makes me want to take more psychology classes just because she makes her lectures interesting and fun!
Well you really have to study, and you really have to take a lot of notes, she throws bones in terms of bonus marks... but their just crumbs, just 3 exams only no assignment :-/ for 111 and 112 psych
Amazing! Expect to work hard and learn lots. very innovative, friendly, and interesting. She will inspire you to do your absolute best, and will challenge you to your highest potential. A highly respected and admired faculty member.
Caroline is the worst psychology teacher I have come across at Mal. She offers no help and her examns are very difficult.
exams were brutal no assignments alot of notes very hard marker class was not very interesting i wouldnt take another class with this prof
Hard to get a hold of and a bit unfriendly out of class. In class, she is engaging, funny and encourages a relaxed and entertaining learning atmosphere. There's something really cute about her too.
She has a thing against criminology students
Good professor. Very professional, friendly, funny, although fairly difficult. One of the best Psyc professors at Mala. I would recommend Caroline!
Awesome teacher, very organized and well prepared, lets you know exactly what she wants from you and shows you how to do it. Never boring, always friendly.
Liked it that she was hard on us - made us work harder and think! Still using the skills she taught me years ago. Those who think she was unhelpful out of class were likely looking to be spoon fed...
She's my all-time favorite teacher. You always know what to expect and lessons are planned very well. You can get an A+ in this class - it is attainable!
Probably the best teacher i've ever had. She is one of those teachers that just inspires you above all else. Was the only class I looked forward to attending. A very good lecturer, always makes them interesting and exciting. Very interactive class - likes to give handouts and (optional) small assignments for each class. Tests are a little tricky.
Awesome teacher
very organized, however she covers very little of the text in class, yet expects you to know it all. coverage very poor compared to other psyc teachers making exams more tricky.
Great class, actually WANTED to go! Read the text, show up for class, spend some time on your paper, study and you will be fine. Reasonable tests, fair marker, extremely helpful with the project. Classes are interesting, text adds any clarity you might need.
Caroline is an excellent professor who goes out of her way to help her students succeed. She's organized and gives clear instructions. Her lectures are inspiring, and she provides interactive activities and videos to supplement the learning process.
I like her as a professor. Her exams are fair. However she's not always available for student questions in person during office hours.
She's nice, a good professor that held my interest level in lectures (props), can be a difficult marker at times but reasonable.
Caroline is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She knows how to keep her students attention, and uses a variety of different formats in her class (video, overhead, group work). I recommend taking this class too it is a bit challenging but in a good way.
One of the better profs I've had. Very clear in her lectures. I have her again next semester; looking forward to it.
She's great. Really clear and precise, really good at keeping her students' attention, very approachable. I've taken tons of courses with her and her class is literally never boring.
She is clear in class, but an insanely hard marker. She expects the mooon for exams, and gets disappointed if you don't do well. It gets frustrating. She also puts so much from the text book on exams, but never covers it in class. I really don't want to take a class by her again. I don't recommend her at all.
Caroline has a great personality, and knows how to keep a class's attention. Never boring, shows videos. HOWEVER. Her tests can be VERY difficult. Each test is mostly questions on the most obscure of details, expect a low grade even after the hardest of studying. Incredibly easy otherwise though.
Extremely helpful, hard tests but they make you learn (I will be forever grateful, as my major is in psych), and interesting classes. One of the best profs at VIU.
Her notes were very easy to take down and understand, and she always backed her notes with examples and explanations. She told you when to read what chapters and was super friendly, funny and nice. I hope to take courses with her as my prof again!
Professor uses varied engaging teaching methods. Unclear and inconsistent expectations. Petty marker, often taking marks off in contrast to her stated expectations. You will learn a lot, but you will waste time trying to decipher what it is she wants. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS about her expectations in class, to hold her accountable to her word.
She was awesome. I absolutely loved having her as my prof. I was inspired to declare my major in PSYC because of her passion. I would recommend her in a heart beat to any friend.
This class was tough. Prof allows you to give in drafts and when you correct everything from the draft she still gives you a bad mark. She expects way too much. Oh and she walked out of class.... very unprofessional. If you can take this class with another prof, i would highly recommend you do so.
This was a class that was filled with notes and more notes. The upscale to this is they were easy to follow. Her exams were brutal but passable. She was an excellent prof. and the content learned was vast just she is tough.
Great class, wasn't a free ride by any means but if you try you'll get a good mark. Caroline was really likeable and I enjoyed the class.
Dr. Burnley's lectures are incredibly well structured and if you are paying attention and go to all the classes, you will get a good mark. If you are serious about your academic success you will succeed in this class. She is fair and helpful, and expects a lot from assignments and presentations. Do not leave anything to the last minute.
She's a fine prof. I did find this course kind of boring. She uses a lot of multi media and tests on everything. Lecture, text book, movies, articles and in class exercises. Make sure to show up and take really good notes on everything.
Caroline is a good professor overall. She often does group assignments in the courses she teaches, which can be incredibly frustrating and stressful if partnered with a poor student. She lets you hand in drafts of major assignments, gives you clear outlines of what is expected, and does her best to make her classes interesting.
Awesome, favourite by far!
Caroline overall was a great professor. She has a lot of experience teaching, and it shows through her clear communication of information. HER TESTS ARE HARD but not impossible to get a good mark on, it just takes a lot of applied studying and attending class! Class was interesting, and I definitely would recommend her to others.
I specifically dropped another Psych prof just to b able to take her class for Pysch 112.
She was an extremely hard marker for a 200 level class. Very nice and approachable but the way the class was graded was ridiculous. A project that took the whole term was only worth 30%. The final exam worth 35% AND ACCUMULATIVE.
Research methods is a difficult class as is but I found Caroline's marking style rather harsh. For my project I handed her a copy to edit before it was due and still did poorly on the final copy. Good instructor if its you're only class and you don't have a job or any other obligations.
Very straightforward with project expectations and with what material to know. Very organized and prepared. Approachable and really nice. Make sure you study for tests. Midterm was harder than the final, but study lecture notes AND textbook for both. I found her to be a consistent and fair marker and an overall really good prof.
wont take a class with her unless i have no other choice
I really like Caroline's teaching style, the slides and class discussions are great. My only problem is that she marks HARD. Even when things were corrected because of her advice, it would still get marked wrong. Her exams are written for the lessons to be applied to real life scenarios so if you're better with terminology/theories, avoid her.
The lectures given in class are so well presented, understandable, open for questions and truly worth your time to go to. Caroline is a wonderful, inspiring, passionate professor. HOWEVER, if you are looking for an easy class, she does not teach easy classes. She teaches classes to teach, and she marks hard. Highly recommend, but challenging.
I really enjoyed taking this course with this professor. She really made class interesting and her test questions were a mix of lecture, textbook notes, and application of your knowledge. I found her teaching very consistent and that she does care about your learning. Very approachable and always replies to emails in a timely manner.
Caroline is a fairly good prof in terms of lectures. She does a good job of explaining things and having class activities that really help you understand the material. However, she is a really tough marker and you really have to work in order to do well in her class. Be really, really specific on your written portions of your exam.
Would not recommend
BORING LECTURES. Doesn't add much value to the course at all. Basically just read off power point slides from the textbook and asked shallow questions that nobody wanted to engage in.
Caroline was quite dry as a professor but her tests and weekly quizzes were fairly straightforward as long as you put your work in with studying! Probably wouldn't take another class of hers again though.
Caroline is very organized. Unfortunately, she is very passive aggressive especially when you missed a class. I felt that she let her mood and salty comments affect her teaching and marking at times, because of this I did not find her approachable. Had an extreme attitude on midterm days making students feel un settled before the test.
I have enjoyed Caroline as a teacher, that being said she has a few habits that are either antiquated or inappropriate in a university setting. During midterms and exams she patrols the room the entire exam with her hands behind her back which is incredibly distracting and upsetting. She also really loves the group project concept so beware.
she is a nice person but overall her class was drop dead boring. she reads straight off the lecture slides and does not add anything interesting to the course. all of her marks come from tests and i found that she would say not to go into details while studying but her exams were based strictly on the details.
Caroline is very organized and a fantastic lecturer. She offers a lot of practical advice in her classes. I did find my research methods class with her more challenging than behaviour mod, and beware that she has high expectations and DO NOT skip class if you want a good mark.
Caroline is absolutely amazing. Her lecture slides are straight to the point, she mixes up activities and lectures, she gives the option of handing in rough drafts of papers. She DOES make you work for your grade though. You cannot cram and do well. Definitely one of my favourite professors at VIU though!
Caroline is my favourite professor in the Psychology department at VIU. She uses just the right mix of whit and fun in her lectures and really cares about each and every student. She is a tough grader so make sure you write lots on the written questions on the exam and hand in drafts for papers (she will give you AMAZING feedback).
Caroline first and foremost is a professinal through and through, her lecture I found were engaging and she loves to have class input through out. She makes sure we have assignments through the week and really makes you work for the grade you recieve. As for tests, midterms and finals you will fail if you don't studying and attend. Awesome Prof
Caroline was an amazing prof. She is very test heavy so you need to study or you will not pass, but that's expected at a university level. Overall she is very approachable and super knowledgeable. Would 100% want to have her again.
Has high expectations that are unrealistic especially if one has multiple classes going on or any other type of homework in general. She assigns videos, articles, and will test them along with lectures and readings. if you like struggling and hating your life then take this class. If i could go back in time and drop this class i would have.
caroline is honestly a great prof. her class is pretty straight forward. doesn't post notes online so you need to show up to class. there are online quizzes that arent hard if you read the textbook. exams are pretty difficult which is normal and as long as you study you're good. this isn't an easy A class and need to put in the work.
Caroline is an amazing professor and such an approachable, kind person. Her classes are definitely tough but she never fails to make them as interesting as possible. I would suggest showing up to class as she does not use D2L to post her notes nor does she send them if you decided to skip out. Would 100% take another class!
Ive only had Caroline online and it was terrible. A lot of work; a research project, weekly quizzes, tests and lots of reading. She also expects a lot and knows pretty little. She seemed unprepared to teach a class on online research as she didnt know anything about online research platforms. Expects way too much and has painfully boring lectures
Though I enjoyed the lectures and learned a lot from her course, I also found it very difficult to keep up with weekly readings, extra videos/readings for each chapter (probably about 2-4), especially if you have a bigger course load or work outside of school. I'd only recommend her if you're someone who can take on the workload + other classes
worst
Caroline is good for feedback on drafts. But she marks hard. She obviously expects a deep understanding of the materials from her students. Exams are a mix of m/c, short answer paragraph, and an essay style paper. She can seem a bit "cold", but it is clear she avoids friendliness with students to avoid any bias for marking etc.
Her lectures are interesting, but keep in mind she bases your entire grade off of 3 tests in this course so you shouldn't miss any of them. She does not do re-tests(even if you have a valid reason why you missed the test) so keep that in mind.
I really enjoy Dr. Burnley as a lecturer. She has a very inspiring research lab, and is well-versed in every topic she teaches. That being said, you have to remember you are in university. So hand in high-quality work, because she is notoriously a hard marker. Go to every class, participate, she has favourites in class so make sure you're 1 of them
Caroline is a lovely prof who wants all of her students to do well. She seems tough but is genuinely sweet. Her classes consist of lectures which sometimes are boring.
Shes my favorite prof so far, so thankful!
You have to teach yourself the textbook, and the lectures are just her rambling about things vaguely related to psych but that are 100% on the test. Very out of left field test questions. Nice-ish person but generally a bit of a weirdly formatted class with some strange rules. Like no photos, but you can audio record. But then you have to delete it
Her classes are very test heavy and her tests are comprised of very niche topics. I would recommend trying to find another prof when doing this class because her marking is ridiculous.
Professor Burnley is a tough grader but also genuinely desires students to do well. That being said, lots of effort is required to do well in her class, and participation in class is very important.
She doesn't post lecture slides, which is one thing I don't understand. She expects students to participate every class. Her slides are vague anyways. Her tests are hard and super lecture-based. I don't enjoy her teaching style. But she is a kind and genuine person.
Do your reading, attend class and take notes and you will do well. If you don't think you need to go to class, there is no content posted about what was covered, so you'll have a hard time. If you show up and take notes you should be fine. She is also VERY warm and kind, just chat with her if you need help, she wants you to do well.
If you are bilingual, do not take her class. She never put her lectures in D2L. Your midterms worth 30% of your overall grade. Thus, there is NO room for improvement. You come to class 2 times a week but the amount of work left for you to do at home is outrageous. She doesn't understand her system is out dated. However, she is very passionate.
I once missed class and she told me "you wouldn't just not show up for work". I am paying this university to go here this is not a job. At a group presentation where we had to stand up in front of the class, she sat at the back of class and heckled us. She would yell, laugh, interrupt us. She made several people run out of the room crying.
Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy one, you must attend lectures to do well. Her tests are very lecture based, textbook helps to understand better and have reference. Group project was nightmare, you pick your groups early on so if you don't know people well you're gonna have a bad time. Very test heavy and challenging.
She is pretty old school but is catching on to what we say lol. Always makes us read the chapter before we start it in class and does bi-weekly quizzes online. She makes lectures very enjoyable and interactive. I found myself wanting to come to class more because she makes it fun in a way. Would definitely recommend!!!
get ready to read and study lots
Caroline's teaching style is the ideal learning environment, you actually learn in her class! She is consistent, passionate and considerate of the learning process! She gives you time for notes which will be your BIBLE! You get what you give, work hard and do your best to truly grasp the concepts and you will do great! 10/10
super sarcastic and passive-aggressive. do NOT recommend. exams are brutal and she will say stuff about what you do wrong but with a smile on her face to lighten the load but it makes things worse.
Caroline is an old school professor, but she makes the lectures engaging. Having her for behavioral psych is a complete 180 from having her for any intro classes. She cares deeply about wanting her students to succeed and is more than willing to help if you ask. She tests lots the textbook, but if you do your work and ask questions you'll do great.
lectures were organized, easy to understand and interesting, the textbook chapters were short so an acceptable and maintanable amount of readings were assigned, the exams were tough put were clear and matched what we learned in class, a bit intimidating to approach outside of class
Does not give students the slides in lecture, so you have to take notes of everything. Will mark any answer to a question wrong if it the answer does not come from her slides; even if it still a valid answer to the question. It has to be her answer. Very anxious and controlling during tests, will make you more anxious if you struggle with tests.
Harsh and Passive Aggressive.
she's a lovely woman but overly tough for an intro psych class. entire grade in the class was based on two midterms and a final, all of which were harder than they should've been for a first year course.
Tough for an intro class. We only had two midterms and a final, both of which were fairly difficult, and most of the class struggled with. Her lectures are very helpful, and cover most, if not all content from the textbook. Midterms consisted of short answer, multiple choice, and a matching terms and definitions section. Slides are not posted.
She does not post lecture slides. Her slides don't have much information on it. For one of the chapters there was at least 8 topics that we had to know and learn ourselves because she only went over 2 out of the 8 topics. The only way for you to get grades in the class are through 2 tests, which are both 30% and your final which is worth 40%.
made things unnecessarily difficult, rude to certain students
I took PSYC 111 with Dr. Burnley this past fall semester (fall 2025.) She's an excellent professor who is caring, kind and wants you to do well. Listen intently in class, participate in the class activities and you'll do well.
