She is not helpful one bit. If you mess up on one test your done for. No extra credit at all (although she assigned extra credit right after the drop date) Class is very borring and makes every uninteresting.
i thought she was good in the beginning but when i did bad on her test i spoke to her and she told me not to worry. As time past she winded up giving me a D. Do not take her she is boring and wouldn't answer back to my email!
She makes me laugh, her outfits are cute but her hair is always everywhere! You really dont need to read because she tells you what you need to know. She is very into her job. Her class wasn't hard at all.
awesome teacher. extremely helpful u just have to go to class take all the notes and that basically is the test. everything she writes down will be on the test
I got all C's on all my work but somehow managed getting a D in the class. Please save yourself the trouble and take another sociology teacher.
horrible teacher. boring, doesnt know how to talk to the cl****, and you can barely understand her. plus only about 10% of what she talks about in cl**** is in the exams
i never been in a class that so many kids have dropped it ended up being me and about 5 others.. she keeps u till teh very last minute and is so boring..i thought i like it at first and understood everything untill the test and u only get 3 test and she is teh hardest grader on the two papers she gives you..i would not reccomend taking her class
She uses examples that dont even relate to what is on the test.
I had this professor for this fall semester, which I would like to mention failed me for the class. She is a very rigid individual who will not bend for anybody. Some of her "standards" are very unreasonable. I highly reccomend NOT taking her class.
The adverse comments are unwarranted. There are a lot of papers and she expects you to write like a college student and not a fourth grader; she should. She challenges you. If she didn't, I think required diversity courses would be even worse.
Alot of kids dropped and thought she was hard and I'll conceded that the tests sometimes had unexpected twists, but she was very reasonable when approached outside of class and because of some of us talking to her she offered up extra credit. Her grading of papers was also more then fair. I'm taking her again next semester
iVE NVA SEEN SO MANY DROPPS okayfirst of all her grading system is out of this world she has a total posible amount of points that u can get for the semester if u dont get them u WILL FAIL, she gives a "pop quiz" EVERY CLASS!!! about 5 multiple choice and she grades your paper like a english teacher insted of finding the meanings she finds grammer
i took this class thinking it would be easy and boy was i wrong. her lectures were all over the place and the tests made no sense at all. you have to do a paper which is not bad at all. i made study guides for myself and really did study and the tests were crazy!! take her at your own risk!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!!
Terrible Teacher! She talked most of the time about her own family which got pretty repetative after a while, the term 'space cadet' comes to mind when describing her. Not flexibility at all - I know one student who had perfect attendence, great class participation and was 1 point off a B and she still received a C - no flexibility whatsoever!
just get out while you still can. in 3 hours, you will have about 2 and a half pages of incoherent notes that don't help when studying. she shows mindless clips from the internet to make a point (pay attention she asks ?'s on tests about them). Attendance is mandatory to pass but its a waste of time. she's boring and thinks shes the queen of soc.
She is absolute garbage. her tests are very wordy, so the questions are basically designed to trick you. her lectures drag on forever, she keeps you til the very end of class and she'll put things on the tests that she mentioned once in class. she doesnt make the class fun at all. DONT take her, you'll want to never go back to class after the exp.
Professor Calagero is very passionate about sociology. She's very smart and nice, but I'm not a sociology major so I found the class pretty hard!! You have to go to class, take notes and read the chapters to do well. She will help you if your borderline, she's very fair.
I loved her! Great teacher. She has a very sociable personality and it totally fits the course.
Did all of the work and worked hard yet still got a C+. She grades her 2 papers as if you are all English majors and doesn't give extra credit at all. Her tests are made to trick you and on videos that she says she shows for fun and not essential for the lesson. Yes she is passionate and knows what she is talking about but a terrible teacher.
Listen, I received an A in her introductory course. Any of these geniuses that put her down or said she was difficult, simply didn't put in the effort. Her tests were basic if you studied and her papers easy as long as EFFORT was applied. NOT HARD at all, and she is very approachable.
Wow the person below me could not be more WRONG! I did ALL of the work and read every week! Every term on her review sheets are NOT on the tests, instead 30 second youtube videos are! Impossible grader on papers! She's passionate and smart but UNFAIR
JUST DO THE WORK! got an A and Im far from a book worm. Just pay attention and youll do fine. Do the extra credit and get B's on test and youll get A for course. Adverse comments obvi are from stoners and idiots cause this class was not that hard
I just transferred here from UNC and I love all of my professors at Brookdale but Caroline Calogero is the worst teacher I have ever had including high school teachers! Poorly designed lesson plans. Her tests were a joke... she is a horrible teacher! Dont take her!!!
Wonderful professor. I had her in the Fall of '08. She squeezes the life into any topic she talks about. I got a B+ in her class and only missed an A due to a late assignment. I would recommend her to anyone interested in sociology. So come step out of the fishbowl and examine what's inside.
One word...RUN!!! This will be the toughest teacher you ever have. Get out before its too late. If you care about your GPA I advise to stay away from this teacher.
I had her for the spring 09' term and well..lets just say you never really had to go to class. I do believe she taught every soci 101 class differently.. some other students complained about tests as to where I never had a test. Paper was due basically every week..some had to have powerpoints..she graded the papers unfairly.. Although I did get a B
I honestly have NO idea what most of the previous posters are talking about. I had Calogero in the spring and she is very knowledgable. She clearly explains all concepts and she is super nice! Just take good notes, attend every class, study the key terms in the textbook and take advantage of the website and any ec and you shouldn't hav any problem.
I think Mrs. Colagero is a great teacher. She's extremely smart and knows her stuff. Her class is not easy, but if you go to class and study, you'll do fine. I really enjoy her lectures.
this is the worst class ive ever taken! her lectures r good but r useless bc out of 3 tests, 3 in class essays, maybe 4 quizzes that r pointless nothing will help u. u study her notes & the end of each chapter from the book and its completely useless, hard & different on the test then wat u study from her notes from class or the book.
.... and I totally would NOT recommend her, she never tells u if ur failing or not, & doesn't care if u r passing but acts like it and she talks to u like ur one of her patients not as a student. I don't know how anyone could pass her class bc she treats it as a 201 advanced class instead of a 101 normal class. good luck...
Gave me a grade I didn't deserve
Wouldn't recommend this teach to anyone! Ur grades r based on points from:essays, quizzes, & tests not by what grade u get which is impossible bc u need like 280 points just to get a C, spoke to some students as well, they failed & some gpa's were ruined. gives u useless notes, & tests r completely difer than what she gives u to study, sorry but NO
It's truly frightening how intelligent and knowledgeable she is,but it's a good thing.Yes, her class is hard. But if you aren't prepared to work, then why are you in college? Her expectations are more than fair and she respects her students. Her lectures are interesting and though she is tough, she's fun as well.Always laughter but always work...
Her love for sociology, and all social sciences, transfers to her classroom. She's a great lady, always willing to help.I would recommend her to anyone who is a serious student,if not don't waste HER time.Great class.Glad I took it.
Very helpful teacher. Her classes are fun and entertaining. She expects quite a bit from you, but she's always willing to help. I'd recommend her :].
This class is horrible. I'm a psych major and have taken sociology before and passed with an A. I made the deans list for 3 of my 4 semesters before I took her class. I studied everyday for at least two hours per night, and the highest grade I received on her tests was a 60%. I would absolutely never recommend her.
This class completely ruined my semester. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER TO ANYONE. Her notes are useless, and none of her tests reflect what was covered in book chapters or in notes. I've taken harder classes and passed with flying colors, sociology is common sense, shouldn't be that hard. Stay as far away as possible.
BEWARe! >:O nice lady, BUT Her tests are soooo HARD i swear...
Very nice teacher but talks way to much and tends to just go on and on about nothing. tests are hard and confusing even with studying. some of the things on the tests weren't covered in class or in the text. i recommend her ONLY if you want a challege and/or are serious about sociology!!
she's a nice person, but gives the most impossible assignments/exams and HAS POP QUIZZES ALL THE TIME. do not take her if you want to earn an easy A or B. i'm a straight A student and i got a D from this ridiculous woman.
She is a nice, but her tests are insanely hard. Sociology should be an Easy A, but she doesn't seem to think so. It's absurd how difficult she makes it. It's en easy subject, but she makes it difficult. Getting an A is possible, but it's a LOT of work.
I am a decent student and this class was horrible. She told me if I passed the last test I would be in good shape... didn't know good shape was a D. Her tests were impossible and half the class dropped out before the end... I think that shows something
I have been taking 4 classes this semester and Prof C's was one of them. My other 3 classes i have recieved A's and i had to drop her class because I was failing. That tells you something, doesn't it? I was trying my butt off and still nothing good came out of her teachings. She just reviews the textbook in her powerpoints .
um i dont know who your talking about but prof calogero does not give tests atleast in my class she doesnt. and no pop quizes either. she actually is very easy the only problem is u have to do alot of papers n attend some activities. im getting an A
Loved this class and learned a ton! Great professor.
Very nice and usually in a pleasant mood. Extremely easy class, no tests, essay due about every two weeks. A few activities must be done but nothing that you can't attend on campus. Also 20 hours of community service must be done in less you want to read an extremely long, boring book and write a longer essay on it. Strongly recommend her!
This woman is absolutely horrible, does not answer student emails, terrible at giving a lecture and goes on and on about the same thing for 2 hours and worst of all if you fail the FIRST exam a letter is sent home...forgot i was in high school
She assigns readings, then gives you a quiz on them. Then spend 2 hours and 45 minutes re-reading what you already read, almost exactly from the book. Most boring and uninteresting class ive ever attended. Easy class if you read before coming to class you wont even have to pay attention to this boring women
boring class and just uses mpowerpoints
I loved her class and having her as a professor. She tries to get her students to participate and learn actively in class, my class had some great discussions. The vocab on her tests is a little advanced for a intro course but she was willing to clarify any confussion her students.
You can't expect to just show up and get handed an A. She definitely makes you work for your grade but isn't unfair about it. The amount of papers can be annoying but not difficult. So long as you understand the concept of which you are writing as well as basic grammar and spelling you'll have no problem. Man up, do the work and you're golden.
This woman is literaly the bomb. I absolutely loved her class. She definitly makes you work for your grade, but this its college, buckle down and do the work and you will do great. She makes the class super interesting and does a great job teaching. She is a great person and I fully respect her as a teacher. you go Mrs. Calogero, you go.
Read all of the reviews if you want to truly know this "professor." She is by far the worst teacher at Brookdale. Even the hard and/or boring professors want you to succeed. This one wants you to fail. This site exists to prevent students from taking bad teachers, so don't take this one!
i think she was great. the only downfall is that your entire grade is 3 tests. but otherwise she lectures all the material in the book clearly. she makes it intresting
Notes could be more informative. Textbook is helpful. Readings were good and easy to access. Good use of videos. You do have to do the work. Slow grading & getting papers back. Post test reviews not helpful. Not sure I'd take her again but it wasn't horrible.
The beginning was a little rough.... There is only 3 tests so if you do bad on one your pretty much done for the rest of the semester. Prof. Calogero was very helpful though and was there if needed. She explained the course material well. Overall wasn't a bad class and would defintitely take her again.
"WORST PROFESSOR" Her class was disappointing and doesn't help students that we need from her. Most of times she goes off topic during lecture. I do NOT recommand her at all.
"WORST PROFESSOR" Her class was disappointing and doesn't help students that we need from her. Most of times she goes off topic during lecture. I do NOT recommand her at all. she moves on quickly so not enough time to write down all her power point notes...
Gosh- AWFUL...Class lectures, and powerpoints poor. Not helpful, tests way too hard for what they should be. Each question made just to trip you up not teach you. Stay away-save your dollars because you will end up dropping. How she continues to teach half full classrooms after all drop is byond me!
I really like Prof. C! It's obvious that she loves Soci & I think she does a great job teaching the material. She gives awesome Powerpoints & has open class discussions frequently. Prof. C gives students fair warning that her class isn't a "walk in the park" & to reconsider taking her course if u aren't willing to do the work. Tip: Study ur notes!
Little opportunity is given to strengthen your grade unless you ace your exams. Most of the material in our exam review sheets weren't even on the EXAM!. She was one cannon ball short of an explosion. Overall i am glad to retake this course with a much better professor. I don't miss the hour long power points.
for most the WOST PROFESSOR ever. she doesn't care about her students at all all. she doesn't give you a chance to improve your grade her reviews were not even all that useful half were not on the test she does not deserve to be a teacher
Great powerpoints...uses real life examples...wants to see each student do well...do NOT miss a class...exam review sheets were only semi helpful for actual exam; exams are difficult...study very hard for exams and youll do fine...overall: one of the best professors ive ever had
THE WORST TEACH I HAVE EVER TAKEN !!!!!!! NO MATTER HOW HARD U STUDY FOR A TEST U WILL NOT PASS !!!! SHES HORRIBLE !!! SHE SHOULD REALLY BE FIRED... SHE DOESNT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS AT ALL !!!
Professor Calogero breathes life into all of her lectures. I am always excited to go to her class and learn. Her lectures usually go until the end of the class, but she makes the content fun and interesting. It's important to read the book and study or else her test wills be impossible. I would recommend her to anyone!
Supposedly you get "simple questions" on the test but not one simple question showed up on any test even when she provides "sample problemsscenarios" she doesn't teach anything in the textbook yet a test only reflects on what's in the textbook she also shows no sympathy when grading prepare to work your butt off couldn't stand it so I drop course
Very easy class as long as you pay attention in class tests are an easy A. Very fun lectures, uses lots of current events would recommend to anyone. Almost impossible to fail her class.
Feel like she refuses to give you an A.
After reading all the comments I was very nervous to take her class. She has not been as bad as everyone has made her out to be. My top advice would be READ the BOOK for the tests not her notes. Anyone one here who says her tests are impossible clearly is not studying. Her lectures are very long but if you study hard you will do well.
Refuses to give A's, help or extra credit. Rambles on and on about nothing related to the topic being learned. Will never take this woman again
In the beginning, meaning the first two classes, I enjoyed her as a teacher. However, after test one, I hated the course. Her tests are so confusing and so you must read before and then reread after, and REALLY STUDY for test. While she had enthusiams for the subject, she will go on and on. She does enjoy students opnions, so speak up
She is a very good teacher. She is always willing to help and encourages you to participate. The people who say the test are impossible are clearly not studying. Her test are kind of difficult so DO NOT rely on her notes. You must read the book to understand the language of the course. On canvas she also provides source materials to help you study.
I just finished calogero's class and I'm expecting an A or A-. While her lectures are long and she does tend to put material on tests that she doesn't teach her class is not that bad. The book helped me succeed on her tests don't use her notes. It's very important to do your best on exams because it's the only thing that accounts for your grade.
I basically had to teach myself the material. Don't listen to everyone else on here that her tests are "impossible" they are not hard if you study and read the chapters. Her notes do not reflect the tests so you need to read the book. Her lectures are long and boring and she makes a very simple subject complicated. If you want a challenge take her
Her notes started out okay & ended up being all over the place as the weeks went on. Homework grading, I would spend a lot of time on it for just two paragraphs and it still seemed impossible to get a perfect grade. If your answer is not in wording the way she likes, she deducts points. Tests are rough. My words: Good luck! I passed with a C.
Professor Calogero is a great woman!!! Yes, her class is challenging, but it's not impossible if you put the work into it. The trick is to READ and STUDY ahead of time!!!! Do not wait until the last minute to study, and do not skip the reading or you will drown. I read and took notes on every chapter and got As on every test. Just manage your time!
This class was super interesting. Although sometimes her lectures can be boring, for the most part she tries to make them fun. This class is a writing based course. There are no tests besides midterm and final. There are 5 papers through out the semester but she is helpful and makes it easy. Would recommend this class to everyone! She is very nice
i had her last semester, she not great. Her class is mostly on those 3 tests and her notes don't help with the tests. I remember in the beginning there were 30 kids and at the end on November there was like 15 because everyone drop her class. My advice to you is to read the book and hopefully you'll do fine, otherwise drop her class.
I took a class with this professor and absolutely loved her. She shows such passion about the subject and really knows her stuff. She treats you like a college student so you have to actually do the work like you supposed to but that's the way it works. I learned a lot in this class. You go girl
The difficult thing about this class is your grade is only based on one quiz and 3 exams. If you do bad one them you are essentially forced to drop her class. She can be extremely blunt to people who are not doing well and she is confusing when teaching what is supposed to be an into and easy class. Her lectures are super long. Study the book.
I wasn't sure if I would like a Sociology class but Professor Calogero made the class very interesting. Her passion shows in her lectures & she's very funny. I LOVED the class & think that it was because of Professor Calogero. I looked forward to coming to class. Take notes in class & you will do very well! Would definitely take her again!
Shes a good teacher and makes everything clear with powerpoints. Be prepared to take at least 6 pages of notes per class. Her lectures go on forever and also if you dont study and arent good at memorizing the material you will fail. Would not take her again
Stay clear of this professor. This is not an easy class to begin with, and taking her just makes it worse. You only have 3 tests and no other grades for the class, so if you do poorly on your test, you are screwed. Tests are VERY difficult, she says its from the notes when really are from the textbook. DO NOT TAKE HER
Took this class for my last semester. WORST DECISION EVER! She is a nice woman, but not a good professor. She is very unorganized, and don't buy the book because it won't help. She teaches from her own point of view, and your opinion doesn't matter. She wants you to learn how she teaches it, and thats it. The 3 test are ridiculous. DONT TAKE HER!!!
A lot of people give her a bad rep but shes a great professor. I took SOCI 215 before SOCI 101, but i took her for both, lectures are understandable, tests are hard. She assigns homework occasionally. She looks for key words in home works and the essays on exams. I enjoyed her class. Oh, she is never in her office though, not true to the hours
Prof Calogero is an alright teacher. Although her lectures are awful, sociology is pretty interesting to me, if anything that's how I got through the class. Pay attention, take notes and read the book you'll pass the exams. She sends emails about the exams, pay attention to those as well for the open ended questions. And don't miss a homework!
I had professor Calogero for sociology and it was awful. She teaches based on her own opinions and not what we need to know. We only had 3 tests and they are the majority of your grade so if you fail them you will not pass. Her lectures are dragged out. Expect to write 8 pages of notes per class. She is not understanding at all. Do not take her!!
I'm not sure why this professor has such a bad rep. If you read the book and study for the exams you will pass this class. She gives concepts for every chapter on canvas. STUDY THOSE. Most of it she goes over in her notes. Also study the vocabulary in the book.
worst experience of my life - she takes points off for going 10/20 words over the limit.. lets get leave it at that..
Her style of teacher isn't for me but she is all around great at her job.
Prof Calogero is a very nice lady, but not a very good professor. She tells you up front she doesn't give 100s because no one is perfect. tests are extremely difficult & she makes up her own notes towards her beliefs. writing papers you will not do well unless you use the specific words she wants, but who knows what they are. Avoid taking her
Worst professor, bad experience. She offers 0 help, never responds to emails. My whole class emailed her for extra credit since we all had c's and she ignored all responses and said we should be lucky we passed. Do not recommend!!!!
IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN THE NURSING PROGRAM - TAKE HER!!! I would not have been prepared for the nursing program in the fact that she says "do not memorize the information, learn it. and then you will apply it to the questions". She fosters critical thinking which is essential to passing the nursing program.10/10 She is amazing.I owe her!TAKE HER
I took her for the spring semester and I did like her as a person, not so much as a professor. She knew I was trying and yet I still managed to not get the grade I wanted. The tests were difficult, and you do have to know more than the definition to pass. You have to also be aware that she doesnt allow laptops, only notebooks. Be aware of 15+ pgs
With my experience with this professor, I would say she is a kind woman who has a passion for what she teaches. Tests arent to difficult and i recommend taking good lecture notes and read your textbook. There is also very minimal homework to do.
Great teacher! makes you work for the grade you get but is very helpful if you show involvement in class. explains ideas very well and keeps lectures interesting.
Defintley a good teacher, lots of lectures so pay attention. Guided lecture notes which is a jice youch. Dont scrub the tests, theyre worth alot
Professor Calogero has no clue how to teach. She gives notes and powerpoints that are so disorganized and its hard to keep track of what she is saying. When it comes to 50 question tests, she times us and we have to finish within an hour.
She goes off powerpoint and highlights the important parts of the chapters. Also gives out note guidelines that are SO useful. Very fun professor, very funny, and ran an amazing class. One of my favorites! She rocked.
For some reason, for a 101 class, she wanted to grade super tough. I did all the homework and class assignments and studied for tests and still got a B+ in what should be an easy class. I took a few engineering courses this semester and received a higher grade in those classes than in this one; what a joke.
Horrible!!! Stay away. Such a nice lady tries really hard. long lectures, and minimal things to be graded by. Although she does give you the opportunity to receive extra credit. She is very undermining and acts as if you were stupid. Also she doesn't give "half points". If you want a C/D I highly recommend her.
I would not take this class again. Probably the worst professor i've had all semester. I was failing her class the first half of the semester and managed to just pass. She doesn't respond to emails and she is very boring to listen to on recorded lectures.
Nice lady but one of worst professors i've had. A class I did most work in and still got the worst grade in. Take this class if you want a prof that gives very brief unorganized class notes & rest is on you(tests based on her opinion not objectives of the book), an extremely tough grader to the point that is unnecessary, 0 help, & if u want C/D.
You could tell she enjoyed teaching this course, but I thought she didn't do a great job at it. The quizzes I took were 15 questions in 14 minutes, tests were 50 questions 50 minutes. They were both difficult even watching lectures and doing reading. Very tough grader and makes you get really specific to get a good grade. Very tough professor.
Doesn't do study guides or grades homework. Her class was 3 hours long and none of it would be on tests or quizzes. I wouldn't recommend her to anybody.
Lovely professor! You need to read the textbook to pass, there are no real shortcuts. She provided opportunities for extra credit which was very kind. Also very passionate about the subject! It was refreshing.
She was always in a good mood, well prepared for the class and tried to make it as fun as possible. I was honestly not interested in the subject at all but she made it a very fun time for me. I would definitely take her again. Yes, her tests are hard but um it's college, what did you expect? Some people here are just lazy and blame it on the prof.
She is very passionate about the scope of the class, but she just reads off of PowerPoints, gives 10 question study guides for 50+ question tests. Avoid her as your professor, as she will make you stress hard. She also leans heavy on the textbook so beware of that too.
Very tough grader for a 101 class. She gives you a tiny study guide that has none of the things that are on the test. The test questions are strategic and not straightforward. Do not recommend
Overall nice and funny woman, lectures were engaging but the way she distributed the information was hard to grasp. Material she teaches differs from actual test in an attempt to sabotage your grade. If you don't use specific verbiage that she wants to see on the writing assignments for the test you will fail.
DO NOT TAKE: long winded lectures, none of her questions make sense. She makes this class harder than it should be. Decided to withdrawal
She was very rigid about missed assignments and there weren't many assignments outside of the exams so there wasn't a lot of wiggle room to save your grade, but she was very passionate about her class which made the lectures interesting. Classes did run very long, literally to the last second they could and there were no computers allowed.
Truly was one of the worst classes I took here at Brookdale. The tests and quizzes never added up with the notes we took in class. There were no opportunities at all to get your grade up in the class, and unfortunately I had to withdraw the class due to the class being very test heavy. Tests and quizzes had the most random information. Do not take!
Professor Calogero is a very sweet woman. She is very lecture heavy and it was honestly overwhelming at times to keep up with so much information. Everything is in mapped out for you in the concept sheets. Honestly, if you do the concept sheets, take notes during the lecture, and glance over things outside of class you, will do just fine.
If you plan on becoming a sociologist, I would recommend taking her. If you're just trying to get your gen eds, DO NOT TAKE HER. She is a very kind woman but her lectures are hard to keep up with. The only assignments in the class are unit tests, four mini essays, & two other assignments. She takes this class way too seriously. Good luck.
Going into this class, I was terrified I would struggle based on the reviews alone, but I was wrong. Is the class lecture heavy? Yes. Can it be fun? Also yes. Prof. Calogero is a truly kind and caring individual, and I've had a very positive experience in this course. If you take your notes properly and show up, you'll be fine.
I took this as an online class, the classwork itself wasn't difficult at all, mostly just discussion posts what really got me were both the midterm and final tests, the questions on the tests aren't straightforward and sometimes trick you, not easy and if you don't do that great on them there isn't really anything that could help you….
