This is her 1st semester here, curve with better final grade, might change in later semester. only 10 students attended. 10 Online homework are easy, 2 Tax return project is difficult, 3 exams are so tricky. She changed Final exam to Mutiple Tax Schedule from mutiple choice by 2 weeks advanced notice push don't teach you anything related before.
A tax lawyer, what else do you want? Caroline's a really amazing professor: knowledgeable, approachable and charismatic. She used to work for IRS so every now and then you get to hear some interesting stories. Easy hw, but watch out for midterms and final. If you attend class regularly and take notes, you're gonna pass with decent grade.
Did anyone take Tax Schedule as final? She did not help us prepare for the final at all. Also, the final was told multiple-choice at the begging, then she changed to be Tax Schedule two weeks before the final week. Kids, be careful, she like changing anything whenever she wants.
do not recommend, textbook is your best friend, only easy for student has filing tax return experience
Comparing to another 123A Professor Thomas M, Chen is so difficult. No one go to Chen lectures because it doesn't help.
No doubt, Prof. Chen is tough. But, tax is no walk in the park. If you want to learn the material, then Prof. Chen guides you through the material. She's a superstar in her field. Don't pass up the opportunity to take her course.
Compared to Fowler and Busch, she provides real-life examples and understanding of tax law today. She is an inspiring person to learn from and keeps lectures interesting. READ & know the rules and exceptions. Don't be scared to participate & come to class. Don't trust low ratings! Tax is a hard subject, but it's easier w/her. 3 MC Exam & 1 Final .
Professor Chen is a very fun, vibrant, and caring professor. She keeps coming to class as exciting as possible with hilarious, real-life stories. Also, I have come to her office on several occasions regarding of class materials or problems at work, in either case, she has always managed to give honest and constructive feedbacks. Take her!
Professor Chen tries her best to keep the subject interesting with her lectures/ stories. Tax is already a hard subject, but she tries her best help out students and responds quickly if you have any questions outside of class. Dont let the bad comments fool you. I took Moschetti for 123A and I guess students expected an easy A for this class too
She is fair and a good professor that does want students to succeed. It is a tax class, so there will be reading. I'd suggest you read before class, go to each lecture and add to your notes, then do homework after class. She's really passionate about tax and it's contagious (in a good way of course!)
If you're interested in tax, she's your professor. She is down to earth and is very helpful, but you do have to earn your grade. She is hard but you will be thankful for her teaching style if you go into tax. Who would have thunk that a professor would actually teach something relevant and applicable in life? Very thankful for taking her class.
Professor Chen's class is the best class I even taken in college, even the content is very hard, but Professor Chen's teaching is really helpful. She also encourages students to do the volunteer in tax-aid which is really helpful for one to develop their social network and learning experience. She is really passion about teaching and the class is a
Professor Chen is very nice. Her lecture is great. She suggests come to her office hour if you need anything. We all need the book and online hw (easy). It is tax course, so be ready to read. It does requires a lot of time to read, try to understand, and apply the tax concepts. Home work is easy points, but the 3 exams are hard.
Ali Wong teaches tax?! Srsly she looks and lectures like Ali Wong. She also gives snacks! She's explains the topic very well, but tests are hard bc poor wording. Homework every week, with multiple attempts available. Midterms are MC but the Final is filling out a whole Tax return. Overall tough bc the nature of tax, but very do-able!
I read everyone feed back and I think they are all somehow true. However, it does not matter which prof you are taking, tax class requires a lot of reading before & after class. I took tax before, and I understand the nature of tax course, so I think prof is very approachable, her tests are a little hard but manageable if you read and make note.
Prof. Chen is an excellent tax prof! I recommend taking her class if you're looking for a prof who works really hard to make difficult material easier to process and apply. Her lectures are really helpful and engaging. She takes time to meet with students outside of class hours to answer questions and review material. She goes above and beyond!
Excellent lectures but worst examiner
One of the best Accounting classes I have ever taken! Professor Chen is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and explains things very clearly. She is approachable and will take the time to answer your questions. The class does require you to work, practice, and know the concepts. Trust me, you will feel very accomplished when you finish.
Professor Chen is one of the best teachers in the MST program. I've learned more from her class than most of my other classes. She's always willing to answer questions & is an easy grader. If you want to pass just be sure to read the textbook and slides before class. Lots of the test questions are directly from the book/slides. Gives EC in spring.
Professor Chen has a clear, concise teaching style with relevant real-life examples. A lot of attention needs to be paid to the powerpoint slides. The course is exam-heavy and fast paced. Overall, a good professor who knows her stuff.
She teaches very fast. She is giving so hard project 57pages(complicated) but don't teach how to do project. I have never take the tax classes so how I know the steps to do it. She have been thinking that all students are tax professional. I like professor Ken, he explained so clear about the project. I regret to take her class
Her project so heavy. A lot of paper to do tax form however she doesn't teach, only asking that who question about project. Don't recommend to take her class.
Extremely difficult project for which she provides almost no guidance on. This was the only project I've ever done in which I had almost no idea what was going on - luckily I had good group mates. Lectures are dense, information is hard to remember. Reading doesn't help much either.
If you read and show up to class and practice, you can easily get a B. For an A you you need to put in the extra time. Tax is much harder than accounting. Tax is usually the hardest subject for Accounting and Finance majors, but she makes is pretty straight forward. The project is a pain but it helps you understand the material in a practical way.
Tax is going to be a hard class no matter who you take it with. The material is going to be hard, but she tries her best to make it easier to understand. Don't be afraid to approach her!!! I feel Professor Chen is gem, she is willing to answer questions in and out of class! Professor Chen teaches a tough class, but she's worth it trust me!
Professor Chen is energetic. Her teaching style is fast-paced, so you have to pay close attention to the powerpoint and her gesture. Tax is hard to class, but her explanations on the material are very clear. If you don't understand the concept, her office hour is real help. Try to get a pattern on the test you will be fine.
I would prefer to take Professor Chen. Overall this is a tax class so its hard, but the way she explen that makes easy to understand. If you have any questions shes always ready to help you in her office hours. Make sure you read the big picture form the book before you go to the class. Best Tax class professor :)
Prof. Chen was a senior lawyer worked in IRS many years. Thus, she was a great professional for teaching corporation tax. Prof. Chen used her knowledge to explain tax law clearly. She cared about her student. Go to the lecture, read the textbook , and go to her office hours would help you to get a high grade. she was the BEST teacher I'v even had.
Failed her class the first time, retook it & passed. She genuinely cares about her students and wants to see them succeed. She is very interactive by involving students in practice problems during class. She definitely is no easy A, HOWEVER, tax in general is very difficult. Workload is reasonable, tests are hard but passable as long as you study.
I honestly thought this was definitely not an easy class however the professor is definitely an expert and very passionate in the material she is teaching(Tax). While the material is very hard, she explains everything very clearly with great examples. If you really want to dive into the tax field, I would definitely recommend taking her class!!
Professor Chen is a great lecturer. Her lectures are very detailed, so make sure to take notes in her class. The TA also has study sessions that helps on the exam.
Dr. Chen is a wonderful professor and person! She genuinely cares about her students by learning their names and having one-on-one office hours to review exams. Tax is an inherently difficult subject because of the scope, but she explains the concepts well through visualization and she re-explains it on exam review day to help you prepare.
It's a very hard class but I felt I have learnt a lot. Professor Chen is a good role model for us, hardworking, very responsible, and fair to every students.
Professor Chen is definitely one of the best professors I've had at SJSU so far. She really cares about her students and gives great feedback. She was supportive throughout and also prompt in responding to student's emails. The exams tested on the lectures so if you make a good effort to study, there is a chance to get an A. Take her, wont regret!
I had 123A and 123C with prof. Chen. She is an excellent tax professor and works hard to make difficult material easier to deliver and understand. Her lectures are clear and helpful. After her classes, she takes time to meet students for their questions and reviewing the exams. Taking her tax classes, you would learn beyond the materials.
Keep in mind this is a tax class and in the tax world there are a lot of rules and exceptions you need to learn. Also a lot of computations. However, she lets you use a cheat sheet in her exams and is willing to answer any questions you may have. Her exams are difficult so you really need to understand all of the concepts
Professor Chen does a great job with difficult material. She is obviously very sharp and she makes the material so much more accessible than the textbook. I wish my class lasted longer so I could have learned more.
Professor Chen did a great job on this hard class and she is an excellent professor, and really cares about her students. She always gives a quick response and tries her best to help student understand. Her lecture is clear and useful. The material I learned from this class provides me a lot of help during work. Take her class will not regret!
She's very knowledgeable about tax and teaches extremely well. Uses examples during lectures that are similar to test questions. Tax is a tough subject but she simplifies it making it easy to follow and understand. Always go to office hours, she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. 4 MC tests (1 gets dropped), cumulative final
Shes nice but her tests are extremely hard but shes the only one teach so no choice.
She is a nice professor. Her lecture is pretty clear. If you want to take her class and higher grade, you need to preview the textbook and deeply understand class PowerPoint. It is not a hard class if you completely understand.
Her teaching style is good, but exams are really hard. Not easy to get A. Wont take her again.
Avoid taking her if you can. Tax is hard and her exams are not able to finished by students! I spent lots of time for studying but not getting A.
She tries to elaborate concepts nicely with help of diagrams. International Taxation is a very difficult topic in itself but the professor managed to lay down the foundation in a great way. Loads of examples, in class assignments to get more clarity on tough topics.
My biggest impression in class is that Professor Chen is a good professor. She is patient with every problem. Be prepared to ask questions. Class is not so easy. When you acquire useful knowledge, you will feel that the knowledge is worth the effort. Good luck.
Her exams are nightmare. Her classes are good but she teaches very fast and projects are hard. Not recommend.
The way Professor Chen teaches makes you work for it. Taxes are easy when you know your way around. I made sure I was ready before class and it went well. The project was complicated because you feel overwhelmed with all these forms, but it was fun.
Professor Chen is the REAL DEAL. She is knowledgeable, and if she doesn't have the answer right away (because tax is ever-changing), she will follow up next class with an answer. If you WORK HARD, MEET with professor, ASK questions, STUDY STUDY STUDY you will be OK. Professor Chen is open & supportive in such difficult times! I Recommend Chen 100%!
This class is a nightmare. Im so stressful with her class.
She is the best professor I have taken at SJSU. She makes her lectures very clear and easier to understand tax concepts. Her exams are straight forward and cover all topics she mentions in class so it's not hard if you study well. Three exams, one tax project, and one cumulative final. Go to her office hour because she will help you a lot.
Lemme just say, tax is not an easy class! However, professor Chen really tries her best to simplify the subject and make it relatable. She is also super understandable and will always be there to help. I highly recommend attending her office hours and lectures! Exams were hard, but doable as long as you try and do all the hw.
Tax is hard, but I think professor Chen is a solid choice for this class. Shes super knowledgeable and approachable. To pass the class, you gotta attend lectures. If you really wanna do well then you gotta study and work for it. Exams arent too bad since she does prepare you. Overall, I highly recommend taking this prof!
Take this Professor if you wanna learn! Sure, the class will be tough but shes there to help. Exams arent going to be easy but she will prepare you. Take her!
Loved how flexible Chen is! Shes a great professor and cares about comprehension. She replies within a few hours, even on weekends. Attendance isnt mandatory except on class assignment days. Tests are off her slides so just rewatch her lectures for studying. Tax Return Project - pick a good group and start early. Final was a mini Tax Return.
Professor Chen is probably the best Professor I've taken at SJSU. Not only that she cares about her students, but she also teaches the material very well. Tax is a very hard class but her recorded lectures really allows me to understand the material. She makes the class very fun which helps me stay engaged. I'd definitely take her again!
Professor Chen's lectures are amazing because she explains everything using examples and records her lectures for review. She gives the final review section to help prepare the final, which is very helpful. I learned more than I thought, and her class changed my career choice. In addition, all the assignments and exams are the basic tax rules.
Professor Chen breaks down every complex concept into understandable pieces. In that, her lectures/slide deck are the BARE MINIMUM for passing the class. Specifically, the computational examples in her lectures mirror the types of questions you will encounter for the exams. Start the group project early since it's a life-saver for your final grade.
Do not buy the textbook, read her slides and take note CAREFULLY. The project is not too hard, but make sure you have a good group. Do not freak out when your midterm grades are not too good coz she'll drop the lowest one. Project & final exam can save u. Try to be on top of the class and you'll can get B+ to A.
Professor Chen is a great Tax attorney, she is always up to date with new tax laws, she is always willing to answer questions and make time to meet with you, she is a great professor and I recommend taking her class. I advise you to always participate and ask questions!
If there's anyone you want to learn tax under, it's Professor Chen. She was a tax attorney at the IRS for over a decade and has masterful knowledge about taxation. She breaks down her lectures and makes sure students understand before going forward, and will make time outside class for extra help. I now have a career in corp tax thanks to her class
Professor Chen is an amazing professor. She is very kind, professional, and knowledgeable. I have taken both 123A and 123C with her. I would say that these two classes are the most practical and helpful classes for me as an accounting student. You just study the power point for the lecture. The homework is not very relevant.
Professor Chen is an amazing professor who cares about her students. This course is challenging since Tax is not an easy subject. Professor Chen makes sure that her students understand the subject by answering questions the students have. Professor Chen is very knowledgeable and makes tax interesting. Professor Chen also has funny stories.
Worst experience w/ a prof. ever (36). Hostile to student Qs, takes as a challenge. Gives thoughtless answers. Has JD, but teaches acct'g, & math concepts confuse her, so she misunderstands basic concepts/teaches them wrong. Won't admit mistakes, even if direct contra. evidence (hostile). Good reviews were before tenure. Doesn't und. how T/F works!
Hostile attitude, poor wording on exam q's that are clearly recycled! Zero understanding of a topic she was teaching and needed to be set straight by a student. Extremely slow grading turnaround. She even falsely accused student of cheating. Avoid if you can.
Professor Chen is a great teacher, she is confident and knows what she is talking about. Taxes are difficult, but Professor Chen explains it very well so that we can better understand the material. I would definitely take her again. Also, Professor Chen is willing to help you and easy to contact her, do not be afraid to ask her for help!
She is a good professor, but her class is so hard. She gives good lectures and powerpoints for exams. Exams are open note, but not easy. There's 5 exams in total and drops 1. Tax project is long and annoying. Homework and assignments are easy points though.
In an hour, she taught over 30 slides or more. Exams are hard and not enough time. 36 Qs in 70 min. Exams are test for fail. Midterm answers are never posted. Only during her office hours, she will explain but not provide a copy of the exam answers. There are 13 forms to fill out for the tax project. She forgets we are inexperience students.
Prof. Chen has the knowledge and works experience to teach students how effectively to learn taxation. She cares about students and is willing to help them to find a job. I do not recommend ppl if not accounting/tax majors. You gonna use what you learned in real work, and the real work is much more difficult than the course. Please be prepared.
You can tell Professor Chen knows the class material extremely well, but a lot of students can't follow along with the lectures due to how fast it is. I wish Professor Chen could have given more examples during class time instead of dismissing us 10-20 mins early. Take her if you are good at teaching yourself the material.
Did a few HW assignments,1 tax return project (get a good group/ask questions/start early), 4 "midterm" exams (drops lowest score, open book/note), 1 final exam (open book/note). She covers the lecture slides and a few examples in-class (she goes pretty fast). Slides (with examples/answers) are all available in canvas. Best tax professor at SJSU.
Professor Chen is awesome!! She has the talent to explain the complex international tax law in a simple English language. She's very kind and supportive. She provides good feedback to students who are willing to learn. She has a busy schedule, but she's available to students outside class hours. I definitely recommend her to others!
Professor Chen is great at explaining the complex international tax in a simple matter. She has deep understanding of the tax law. She's supportive to students. I love her class and I learn so much from her.
Professor Chen's lecture is amazing, she gave the real example and explained to us. You have one "big" group project through whole semester, which related to what your learned. Exams are open boon, but not easy. HW are pretty easy. She is a great professor, but the course is hard. Will take her again.
doesn't care if anyone understands the concepts Read 200 slides in 1.5 hours belittles student questions Gets defensive when asked a complex question Lacks ability to write a T/F question correctly Test questions had multiple errors 75% of class miss question on test, Says that it is a reflection on us and not her poor teaching ability.
This class overall is a difficult class but not because of the professor but just the topics in general. Exam are open notes but you do need to study if you want to pass. Professor Chen makes time for you after class and during class if you need the extra assistance. Exam are based kinda like the examples that are presented in class.
Three (difficult) quizzes, one exam, one tax project within 2.5 weeks. Most of the time she just read off her slides without detailed explanation. Get ready to teach yourself after every lecture. No feedback on homework before quizzes. No feedback and instruction on tax project.
Her class is extremely difficult and she does not give much guidance on the group project. She is not very helpful when it comes to answering questions and goes way too fast. Her slides are very thorough and you will be okay if you are good at teaching yourself.
Professor Chen is a very nice/caring professor! She wants to see her students succeed and is always willing to help her students. For midterms, understand the in class examples in the lectures, know the rules/how to apply them instead of flipping through your notes. Choose a good responsible group for the project as the project is not easy.
Professor Chen is an amazing professor. Tax overall is a difficult subject to understand initially, but Chen's way of teaching the course to her students makes it clear and bearable. Highly recommend to take Professor Chen as your 123A / 123C professor.
Professor Chen is one of the best professors at SJSU! I really enjoyed her lectures in class as she was able to make difficult tax concepts a lot more easier to understand while applying the concepts to real world applications and examples! There are a few in-class assignments, a group project, midterms after every few chapters, and a final.
Professor Chen was a great professor! Tax is an intensive and difficult class with so many different procedures, but Professor Chen makes it as easy as it can be. Her lectures are informative and easy to follow along with. She is also a fair grader and the exams are not too difficult as you can bring notes with you.
Professor Chen is a great professor and made her lectures enjoyable. Her lectures were very helpful so definitely recommend going to class. Exams are open note and book. Print out the slides before class and take notes during her lecture and you will be good. Tax is a difficult subject, but professor Chen does a great job at explaining the topics.
Professor Chen's class is one of my favorite classes. I learned a lot from her lectures as she made difficult tax concepts a lot easier to understand and apply. She is a great professor, and I recommend taking her class.
Professor Chen's class is one of my most favorite. Tax can be a hard subject to learn. However her lectures and passion for tax made learning fun & interesting. Gives lecture problem examples and in-class hw to help understand topics, and are good to study for exams. She is always open to helping students during office hours & is easy to contact.
After taking Professor Chen's classes (123A & 123C), tax has become my favorite subject. Prof Chen was always willing to help students and made the subject much easier to grasp. Before midterms, make sure to thoroughly review the slides and examples. Also, be aware of the wording of the questions. Start the group project as early as possible!

I have taken Professor Chen three times at San Jose State University as an undergraduate and graduate student. She is a very knowledgable professor who has a strong passion for what she teaches and helping her students. She is accessible by email and office hours outside of class. I would take her again and highly recommend.

Professor Chen is a great professor. Make sure to attend the classes, pay attention, and take good notes. Her exams are open book, and open notes which is very helpful, but does not mean that you should not study. She has a review session for the final which is super beneficial, make sure to attend and take notes. I highly recommend her classes.

Great professor and fairly easy. Weekly homework is easy, in-class assignments can be difficult. 4 exams but are open note and strictly based on lectures so just show up to class and take good notes and it's easy. Lowest exam is also dropped if you take all 4 exams.1 group project at the end so get a good group. Final is cumulative but open note.
good professor, hard class. 4 exams + 1 on lockdown, open note. READ EVERY WORD OF exam questions because they can be very confusing and wordy. questions are from slides, class, and in class assignment examples. for in-class assignments explain things like shes 5. she grades it very strictly and gives no feedback on what you did wrong.
I genuinely feel more intelligent taking Professor Chen's course. It is very difficult material, but she does a great job at helping you understand it. Pay close attention to the examples and make sure you create an organized cheat sheet!
Her exams are very hard but participation and office hours are a lot of help. If she see's you are putting in effort she will be very considerate and try to help. Go to class if you want to pass (but it's not required, she gives important exam details in class)! GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Generally just a hard class but great professor!
Go to her office hours after each exam or whenever you have questions!! She makes sure you understand material even if she has to explain multiple times. She really cares about her students success. She is really straight forward about your grades in order to help you understand what you still need to learn. She's a good professor!
Great teacher!
Amazing professor to take! Definitely go over the examples within the slides and in-class assignments as the exams will be heavily based on it. Cumulative final, make sure to go to the announced review date. Know how the concept works and how to apply it, that'll help you a lot. Make friends the first day, that group project get it done ASAP.
I usually don't write reviews, but Professor Chen is not only an incredible professor at SJSU, but she also invites many tax organizations so students can network and potentially find a job. Her lectures are always engaging and she overall makes the concepts of tax easier to digest. Be sure to study a lot and read the book before class!
GO TO CLASS. she goes over calculations on the whiteboard. for in class assignments, be very detailed and explain each step one by one. 3 midterms on lockdown browser and unlimited notes but none are dropped. 1 written short answer final. start tax-aid and tax return project EARLY. overall she's very proficient in what she does.
I took Professor Chen for 123A & 123C and she is an incredible professor. She makes tax very digestible. Her class has fairly difficult open note exams, but you will do absolutely fine if your notes are organized and have studied the examples on the slides. I highly recommend her for 123C especially if you want hands-on experience preparing 1040s.
I took both Corporate Tax and Individual Tax with Professor Chen, and her teaching style is what inspired me to pursue a career in tax. She has a true gift for making complex topics understandable and is always accessible outside of class to answer questions, explain concepts, and offer advice. Take her if you want real life tax experience!
Professor Chen is one of the best professors at SJSU! She makes hard concepts easier to understand and will help walk you through step by step until you know how to do the work. She was always quick to reply to emails and really cares about her students and what she does. You will gain a lot of hands on experience taking this class.
123A is a hard class regardless, but Professor Chen does a great job at teaching it. She also brings in guest speakers, as long as you don't miss class and do a bit of studying you should be fine.
Professor Chen is a fantastic lecturer who makes complex international tax laws much easier to understand and interesting. In addition to the great lectures, she also shares internship and full time position in tax opportunities. It is incredibly helpful.
Professor Chen is amazing at giving lectures and very supportive. She's very enthusiastic and always available for questions. There's a tax return project in 123C which simulates real-life tax work really well (source: im a tax associate). Exams are open-book so tab your printed slides for easy navigation. Overall 10/10 professor!
Professor Chen is very caring for her students. If you still do not understand the topics, PLEASE go to her office hours. Her office hours definitely help with understanding the class better. It is definitely possible to get a good grade in her class, she is a great professor!
This is the type of class where you get out of it what you put in. Coursework and exams may be hard, but if you actually work through them and read her feedback, you will learn enough to work at corporate level. Professor Chen can and will answer any question about the subject matter that you throw at her. In class discussions were my favorite.
Lectures are well structured. Prof. Chen is good at explaining complex tax subjects and providing clear guidelines. She shares her knowledge in a very systematic way and she gives insightful observations given her extensive working experience in both of the legal and taxation worlds.
