Carrie is a great teacher! She is very clear and helpful. She is a little tough on marking papers, but she is fair. Not sure if she is teaching in the Spring...
I found she was not very clear in what she wanted in her essays, like there was no specific topic to write on. She is also a very tough marker.

She is fine~ She gives interesting materials to read in class, and helps to improve writing skills and grammar. BUT she is tough marker and a little bit picky~
She is a great teacher, teach you how to analyze short stories, has a vast knowledge in Literature. But tough marker
SUPER hard marker. Wasn't very nice or helpful. Very unapproachable. She seems nice on the outside, but she flips out when people come in just a bit late. I could understand why she's so angry though, English makes all the teachers bitter...

A lot of discussions in small groups.

Caroline harvey is a very intellectual, free and logical person, and that reflects on the class disccussions she has in class. She tries to get her students to think beyond class and to be more critical and expressive. tough marker, but good :) take her
Caroline is a realy good English teacher. she appriciates new ideas and hard working, but she is not an easy teacher. You will learn a lot in her classes, but you should work hard for getting a high mark.
Moody, difficult instructor with weird quirks such as attendance: miss more than one class and lose 1% per day off final mark. If you like getting a low grade regardless of your hard work and having to work in groups every class then register with her.
Can't read any of her writing on the board. Teaches how to do the mid-term , after you do the mid-term.
too hard

Caroline is a great teacher who is very helpful and her class was SOO great for fine-tuning my essay writing. She appreciates her students' opinions and encourages critical thinking. Just show up for class and put SOME effort in and there will be no problems.
she is a great teacher! all who say she isn't, they're wrong. she's friendly and always willing to help
she's very approachable and friendly
She's awesome. I learned so much with her! Actually, her teaching has made a huge difference in my everyday writing and general expression. Plus, she makes you THINK instead of learning like a parrot. She's not "easy", but she is fair. And nice too!
I didn't like her class at all! Worst teacher ever!
Fair. I got what I deserved. If you only want a good mark, take the easy way out and take an easy prof. If you want to learn something, try her class.

Harvey is one of the best teachers that i've had so far. I took 3 eng courses that she taught so i should know. Her marking is a little hard, but that's what motivates ppl to work harder. She's always there to help u when u ask for it, and she gives students lots of room to express their opinion in classes. Take her for u'rself and u'll see.
Good teacher
very Moody and not clear.
Not very clear with want she wants. She changes her expectations all the time. She will tell you to aim low,but then she will mark high,so that is how you can be attacked.
Boring
depressing. very boring. hates to teach reseach essay and she will make you hate it. blahblah

repeating things
Says one thing today and the other next. This makes it hard for you to focus on your writing

amazing, really got me intrested in litature, wonderful teacher!
she is the best teacher that I have ever had. she is really helpful. she spend time on your essays as much as she can. if you are ESL you have to work hard, but she helps you. she is really nice.
Veery boring teacher
very moody
I think Caroline really made this class interesting to me, i was dreading taking it because of its high failure rate. she really makes you think and get into it. i think she is the best teacher for this course
not a good teacher.
Her class is a borefest. Readings are intresting. This class was too slow, it had little momentum. Overall, she seems to be bias. She needs to stop babysitting the class and teach!
you are so right. She baby talks.
shes a great teacher, but its still a hard class
moody, and seems to take that on to the class. really really unclear on her expectations. not a helpful teacher at all.
she's a very good professor!! her teaching style is easy to understand.
If you want to learn good academic writing but not to get good grades, you could take her class. If you found peer editing helpless, you might need to find a tutor instead. Even grad school students need editors, so it's not a shame to have one. Besides, you have to keep your essays as simple and clear as possible to pass the class.
if you like to sit in class and discuss want her insight on the story is and the student getting lost and harvey doesnt really care take her. By the way she expects everyone of her students to be brilliant. SHe picks favorits and if your not one of them youll get no help and in turn youll get a bad grade. Thanks harvey for no help this semester.
Haha. She is such a bad teacher. she really has favoures. If you are not one of them, too bad, she will Fail you. She is also very lazy, does not foucus on teaching. she should be fired. too bored with teaching perphas. People just don't like her class. she is so negative.
I cannnnnnnnn't believe that they let her teach. she is so lazzzzy
She's a very good instructor. She really prepares the class for 1127 and tells us the things that we are about to learn. Her class is not easy, though. You need to work to get high marks. She choose good essays to discuss; I like them. My essay writing is way better because of her. It's a shame she'll not be around until Spring 2007. Recommended.
Very nice and helpful. I don't know what the other posts are talking about, I guess they were just lazy. If you show up to class, do the readings and come to the draft tutorials you will do great in this course. One other thing will help as well: work hard. She's a smart gal and will help you if you need it.
i loved her. she is a good teacher, she tells you what she wants and helps you produce that. you have to go to class, but its an english class you have to go to any english class. the material she picks is interesting for everyone and her class discussiongs are good
Her teaching is so bad.
Great teacher, knows her students, and their names. Actually cares, and gives great advice.
Caroline is a fantastic teacher! I couldn't of asked for a better introduction to post-secondary. She is passionate about the material as well as her students! Her 'workshops' for essays are very helpful as she goes through your drafts with you. I would love to take another class with her! Her passion is contagious.
She was an awesome teacher! Her classes were interesting, she knew the students and she gave great feedback. She was also understanding and quite the character every class :) Her class was the most beneficial of any I've had
Very hard teacher but has brilliant teaching skills and is willing to help achieve your grade =)
great prof... very helpful and intelligent! if u read the material before hand you wont have much problem in class discussions and in class assignment!!!!! GREAT PROF!!! highly recommended
Caroline is the best teacher I have yet to have! She has made my first semester at Langara a welcoming one. Some may say she is hard, I wont deny that - but if you work hard and show her you try, she will reward you! Also, she is very helpful during office hours - I got a B+ and was very happy with her - HIGLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Awful and offensive. She loves to make an example of people, and calls out students continuously. She is inconsiderate and uses scare tactics to embarrass you into doing things that she wants you to do. The curriculum is one sided, and she favors students who have similar views to her own.
Great teacher!!! as long as you don't miss a class and take good notes, there won't a problem on getting at least a B on the "ridiculously hard" Eng 1127. Her workshops on essay writing are really helpful too and she'll help you a lot on her office hours...totally recommended!!!
she is a great teacher, jokes a lot and trying to make feel her students comfortable in her class. She spent a lot of time with her problem students (just like ,myself) and explained me everything. Oh yeah, sometimes she brought candies so every pupil for the right answer got a candy =)
She is a good professor if you are willing to attend class and take good notes. She wants everyone to pass and works hard at teaching everyone how to write a good essay. If you are someone who skips class and hands in work late I would not recommend taking this class as Caroline is very tough on these things. Otherwise I would highly recommend!
She's a helpful prof;but I can't say she's a GOOD prof.In my opinion, she did seem to have 'faves' in my class. She marks kinda hard, but she explains her stuff clearly. She does marking examples in class, which is helpful. Her classes are quite interesting. If you attend your classes,be active in class, and find her in office hrs,you would be able to pass
One of the best profs i have ever had. I learned so much in 1121, so with that knowledge i got a B+ in 1127 , even though i didnt actually learn anything in 1127. You need to be very diligent with the essay book then you'll do well. I think she's really nice and she works hard to help you.
Horrible teacher! This is more like a sociology class more than an english class. She does not teach well and is no help at all for anyone who wants help. Do not take her class! . She is a very bad teacher!
Best teacher ever. She is so obviously enthused by what she's teaching, and has the most wonderful dead pan humour. She's very very very helpful, in and out of class, extremely dedicated, and very understanding for in-class essays, she also gives great notes. I wish she was teaching every English class at Langara! AND she's so darn cute! MY FAV!!!
Absolutely incredible. I learned so much from this brilliant prof. Carolyn is so helpful when you go to her for extra help. She incorporates a lot of useful societal issues into lectures. She is a tough marker, but as long as you follow direction, you're good. Come to class, on time, prepared, and she'll love you. Such a cutie, too.
I wouldn't say her class is difficult or easy. She marks against an English standard that's transferable to universities like Columbia so..She will teach you how to think critically. She is clear and very helpful with assignments;you just need to put in the effort. She's very encouraging. If you go for help your mark WILL improve.
omgthisclasswasharddude. Every class there was a prettybig assignment so if ur not ready 4 a reallyheavy course dont take it. Id had her for1121 and loved her teaching. This course was sodifferent..shes a pretty hard marker.I learned so much in this course even tho everything was so complicated. Shes given me a set of new eyes to see the world
I LOVED this teacher. Fantastic humor, great explanation, and just all around fun. Easily distracted, but in a way that remains educational. I would take all of her classes.
Very good. She injects humour into her teacher which helps to keep the material interesting, doesnt to do same thing every day, is knowledgeable and passionate about English. She seems like a bit of a hard marker, but willing to help and is very approachable. Expects alot from her students.
Caroline really opened my eyes to the world and resurrected my passion for writing. She is so incredibly inspiring, and anyone willing to come to class prepared will greatly benefit from her lectures. Furiously take notes and engage yourself in the content and you will survive her tough (though necessary) marking. This woman is a higher being.
Caroline is amazing. The class is hard but this is a University level course. What do you expect? Attend, take notes, engage in class discussions. This woman is the Liz Lemon of english teachers, dry humor and all. Don't eat fish & chips in her class. Also don't bring your cell phone to class.
Hard, but fair. Extremely helpful and very hands on.
Attendance is extremely important to her and she uses a traditional approach to teaching. Essays are marked harshly. I felt as though I was in high school with her adding assignments for participation marks and excessive group work. She is intimidating, rigid, and unsympathetic, she'll teach you something alright.
She's a very hard marker. It is impossible to get an A in her class. 1 person got an A- on her midterm and the rest of the people got a C.
Really good at teaching the basics. There were things she taught that confused me my entire life, and it took her 20 minutes. It can be difficult, but you'll learn a lot and it can all be applied to any subject. She's got some vendetta against technology, so she won't let you use your laptop. Highly recommended!
Attendance is an absolute must - but absolutely worth it. She is a fantastic lecturer, if you take notes and participate, you will do well. She is a hard marker but it's not ego or malice - you will honestly be a better writer for going through her class. She really engages with the material AND the students. Seriously worth every penny of tuition.
TAKE HER CLASS, PERIOD. Caroline is an amazing prof, she is funny, helpful and cute. Her marking is definitely not the easiest, but I learned so much in her class. She takes her time to help you and she is very detailed in telling you what to improve on. Overall, the best English teacher you will ever have.
Caroline is tough, but I assure you that taking her class will prepare you for any English writing course you will ever take! She's an amazing instructor, keeps you interested the whole class and is never boring. Dont ever skip you'll wish you hadn't, always hand in your essays on time, you'll be golden! Highly recommended
Caroline is a good teacher, however a very tough marker. She definitely helped me to create a stronger essay, and gave very clear handouts and instructions on how to do so. The whole class was pretty much based around how to write a powerful and clear thesis to support the rest of the essay. Highly recommend if you could use some help with essays.
she was absolutely amazing, she made sure that your essay was peer reviewed and edited by her before you submitted a final copy. Many of my original drafts were not very well written, but my final copies were C+/B material
She is very helpful, her lectures are interesting and she has a great sense of humour. She does so much to ensure that students improve. She knows students names, and builds relationships that further better her lectures.
I took this course my very first semester, Jan 2010. As I am about to finish my undergrad, I just wanted to comment and thank this woman for everything she did to improve my writing. She is not easy, but my writing went from the C+/B- range to the A range. Thank you.
I went into this class with a 4/6 on the LPI. My essay writing skills have improved significantly. She's very passionate and helpful. If you follow her instructions and listen in class, you'll do well. Most English teachers in post-sec are hard markers, she is one of them. However, she's a fair marker.
If you value your GPA, avoid her at all costs. I had to take this course in order to transfer and I went from getting A+s on papers in second-year English courses to Cs in this introductory one. She can also be rude when you try to challenge your mark. Very arbitrary and disorganized. Now thanks to her I'm worried about my chances for transferring.
Caroline is passionate about her craft and it shows, she really wants her students to prosper;has her class do mini class writing assignments & lots of H-W,She is witty and understanding, however,is a tough marker but, hey, it's college, it's not supposed to be easy. See her in the writing center if you are struggling in her class,Thanks Caroline.
Caroline is one of the best English instructors at Langara. Her passion and enthusiasm in class are truly inspiring. She has a great sense of humour and is very approachable; it is clear that she loves literary analysis. Her philosophy involves honing your writing skills through helpful workshops and peer feedback. Thanks, Caroline! Onwards!
She's a really good teacher, EXPECTS higher level writing than what you usually write in highschool. Had a tough time writing a good paper but she helped alot when you wanted good feedback. Not an easy marker but her class is very enjoyable. :)
Very nice, approachable, and insightful person. Super smart. She has a good sense of humor. Is strict about attendance and being on time to class, so do not be late! She doesn't make sure that you're on track, her assignments are "optional" but taken in for grades so it's a good idea to do all of them. She is a very fair grader!
Mixed feelings about Caroline. She has a sarcastic sense of humour, which is very engaging. The course organized, and we stuck to the schedule. Goes very in depth into the discussions, which isn't a negative point. But the grading is pretty rough. Not very forgiving in grading the essays. She certainly lifts your level of writing.
teaching has method it is not like just sharing info or knowledge
I think Caroline is a very good teacher. She is passionate about english and the material we covered in 1127. She is funny and engaging but quite strict about lateness, attendance, and cell phones other technology . She will make you work for your grade, nobody got an A on our first paper, but I find her quite fair.
Wasn't an "easy A" class, but Caroline is extremely intelligent and I feel as though my writing has vastly improved! She makes you think, & teaches you exactly how to format your writing + dig deep. I love how she gave us "step by step" booklets with tipstricks before every single assignment. Very clear, friendly, and through provoking.
Caroline is amazing! She gives English a structure, which I find is hard to come by, She is extremely hard at marking which is great as English shouldn't be an easy A. My writing has improved because of her class.
Caroline is super nice and funny that gives good feedback and help whenever you need it. She was very clear with the course outline and grading criteria. On the other hand, she's quite strict with attendence, tardiness, and cellphones. She is also a tough marker, so you've got to actually work, but it's good if you want your english to improve!
I took Caroline because I've always been good at English and was up for the challenge, however, I found that she was as much a difficult grader as a subjective grader. She failed me on 2 separate papers for going off topic. This was after I got help from the English help centre. I found her help was misguided and unhelpful.
Carol is a fair marker and her instructions are clear. You have to put an effort to get a high mark; this makes sense, considering that English is not an easy course. Moreover, you will learn a lot of techniques on how to write a good essay in her class. This sem, her story and essay themes are mostly about Feminism gender/family roles and Racism.
Caroline focuses on the craft of writing so this is not a class to show off your zesty-wordiness (opps). We received as many as 6 writing packages this semester, which are all extremely handy for this class and my other classes where writing is involved. This class is worth taking if you want to improve your writing skills. Shes a fair teacher.
Caroline is a good teacher that sticks to her schedule. She is very organized and helpful. She hands out many writing packages that improve writing. However, she is a very tough marker. She rarely gives out As and there was only 1 B in our whole class. She is also very strict about attendance and lates.
Caroline Harvey is a kind lady who really teaches you about the proper format of writing essays, sentence structure, analyzing passages, discusses themes related to gender-stereotypes/feminism... Can be interesting but extremely hard marker. Rarely gives A's, very few B's and many C's and D's. C+ for her is a VERY GOOD mark. Nice prof but nah.
Professor Harvey is a passionate English teacher. Her lectures are amazing and engaging. Her essay packages are extremely important and you must read it carefully in order to do well in the essay assignment. She is willing to give you writing advise if you ask and I found it very helpful. Final exam is tough, be sure to read all the novella once.
Caroline is one of the best Profs I've ever had; however, she is a very tough marker. She has helped me improve my English and the writing packages that she gives out are very helpful. Assignments are mostly essays and you must analyze the story critically to get a good mark. She gives very good feedback when she hands back assignments.
Caroline is AMAZING. Great lectures about very interesting themes. Will at times go on funny tangents that will make you laugh. As the semester progresses and she starts to understand your writing style she begins to give far more feedback specific to how you write. Don't expect an easy A, although she does her best to mark as fairly as possible.
AMAZING! She is a great professor, her lectures are informative and entertaining at the same time. She gives great feedback, and ACTUALLY teaches you how to write a college level essay. Lecture notes and packages are very helpful, she also give out bonus assignment for those who need a few extra marks. An awesome teacher. WOULD RECOMMEND!! :-)
Very nice person, she knows how to teach and has her sense of humor. However, she never reply emails and she would tell u in person that she had read it lol. She will be your perfect instructor if you want to learn something. If you want to get credits and have a good score don't choose her class unless you make sure you work hard enough
C. taught me to become a critical reader, to write a 1st-yr. literary essay, and to see an analysis from a description. I grew more confident, enough to want to enter 2nd-yr. English. She is a fair grader and calls out students who *feel* they deserve better (one-on-one, of course). Tip: just read the syllabus and the handouts (the books, too).
Great teacher. You have to work hard to achieve the desired grade.
I LOVE Caroline! I was sad after the term was over. She will teach you how to actually write an essay. You have to work hard and good grades dont come easy, but she will give you best advice and a long and detailed FEEDBACK for every paper! Lectures were entertaining and I learned so many interesting things that are applicable to other courses.
Tough marker but her criteria is clear. Start writing your essays ahead of time and ALWAYS go to her conferences cause she's super helpful and gives great feedback. The stories we read were interesting and didn't make me fall asleep during my 8:30am class. Don't skip her class as it counts for marks. Helped me improve my english a lot.
Caroline is everything you could hope for in a first year English instructor. She genuinely cares about her students and doing her job well and it shows. She provides tons of super helpful material and gives you all that she can to prepare you for assignments. Great choices for readings. Old school in all the best ways.
She is a very experienced and passionate prof. But, work hard on your essays and start ahead of time. Go to the writing centre for extra help and feedback before submission. she held conference before essay submission which are a great opportunity to get feedback. MAKE SURE TO READ THE QUESTION AND ANSWER WHAT IS ASKED. She is very caring.
I dont know how I get my first F in my life. You work hard on an Essay for 10 days by continuously visiting office hours and helping centre, you dont expect an F. Her topics are too old and she dont keep the pace with modern world. Most of her lectures are vague.
good luck probably should avoid at all costs
Think twice. There many more good instructors as well. She is kind of judgemental and gives you D/F for your hard work.
Awful
You cant understand her lectures properly.
Her expectations are extremely high however it is possible to achieve a decent grade if this is the only class you are taking. If you don't have 3 months to edit your essay pass
Had her for my first semester and she is very nice and caring. However, she is a very difficult marker. I usually scored around a B+/A- in high school and found even getting a C+ in her class hard. I took English with another prof in my other semester and got an A! My writinG is the same but Caroline is extremely hard to please and marks weirdly.
Caroline is a skilled teacher, provides a lot of useful material and takes her role seriously. I appreciated the conferences to discuss papers and the time she puts into marking and giving feedback. If you are lazy or make excuses for missing work or class, this isn't the class for you. This prof has standards. I left feeling prepared.
-she gives you pointers for your essay before the due date -bonus marks for participation -improve your writing skills -no quizzes (journals replace quizzes *doesn't mark your grammar, just reads your input) -2 literary essays, group presentation, 1 in-class essay (midterm), and 1 essay and 2 paragraphs based on the books you read (finals)
She is elegant and humorous. She gives great feedback and is willing to help. All good but the scoring. I am not sure but she seems to have pretty high expectations for our essays. My friend's English isn't better than mine but she did get a much higher grade with other profs. I did learn a lot but I wish I could get a better grade.
-gives prizes for the best last line or best essay title -gives good feedback and teaches you how to write well bc she wants you to succeed in the future -attend every lecture because that's what helps you write your paper -1 in class essay, 1 group presentation, 1 take home essay, and a final assignment (2 paragraphs) no final b/c of COVID 19
I took Professor Harvey's English 1100 class during my first semester at Langara this past spring; the final exam was cancelled due to COVID-19. She's tough but fair and gave helpful feedback during the essay conferences and on the marked essays themselves. Overall, I personally enjoyed having her as my instructor for this course.
Caroline was a fantastic teacher. She managed the difficulty with online learning due to Covid exceptionally. Group Office Hours were efficient and helped with loss if in person class. Her course content was clear, enjoyable, and easy to follow. Although she is a tough marker, she returns all grades and critiques quickly-helps with improvement!
Absolutely does not care, will not help with revision on your essays further because "at that point she might as well give you the A". I was at an 84.5 and she promised a bonus mark for doing an assignment and she never gave it and told me I wasn't "an A writer"
if you are taking this course as a nursing prerequisite, I would advise you not to take it with Caroline if English is not your greatest subject. She is an extremely smart woman and her slides are thoughtful and interesting but she is a very tough marker. Regardless of the amount of effort I put in, it felt impossible to get an A.
You do have to put in effort to do well but she really cares about her students and seems like she wants you to do well. Have to get work done on time its rare she gives extensions
Amazing teacher. Was hesitant to take but she taught me so much this semester. She is humorous and fair. She provides strong feedback and her workload is very light. Quality over quantity. Very clear about what she wants with regards to essays. Would totally take a class with her again,.
Her handwriting on the feedbacks are really hard to read. She doesnt care how much hard work you put into your assignment she will give you a D or F if its not up to her extremely high standards for a college course.
Harvey is passionate about English, and she's a hard marker. Attendance isn't mandatory but HW is due at beginning of in-person classes. She gives written feedback in pencil which is almost impossible to read. Class focus was on gender stereotypes, which I wasn't expecting. Good overall but I don't feel like my writing skills have improved at all.
She makes lectures interesting, can be a lot of talking but allows a 10 minute break in the middle. Grading is fair in my opinion, the amount of effort you put in is how your grade turns out. Gives detailed feedback on any writing submitted and walks students through the structure of assignments well. Taking her course again next semester :)
Masks really make it hard to hear her sometimes which made sitting in the back or even the middle of the classroom difficult. She marks fairly but her feedback is always scrawled in pencil so it's impossible to read. Also no electronics allowed in class so if you rely on a laptop or iPad for notes you might want to take another class.
If you are doing nursing prerequisites, I recommend another professor. Although she is nice, her grading is hard as her percentages correlating with letter grades are different than Langara's. No matter how hard I worked it seemed impossible to get an A-, class averages were always at a B or B-. Spare yourself the stress, enroll with another prof.
The class was difficult but overall I learned a lot and I think I benefitted a lot from taking this class. Caroline is good prof if you are interested in improving your writing abilities.
Harvey is very passionate about teaching, and she is very picky for grammar errors. Beware if you are taking this course for nursing pre-requisites, then consider other profs.
Prof was very knowledgeable and would occasionally share some funny anecdotes Lectures were interesting and pretty chill most of the time Workload was manageable. Only downside (or upside, depending on you take it) is there were many group discussions. Not great for those wanting to work independently, but a great opportunity to make some friends.
The only pro was that the workload was manageable. I learned more about gender roles than english. Most of her slides are even just fully based on that topic. On top of that fact she's a very tough grader, she treats your paper exceeding university level. Also don't waste your money on the textbook because it was not used.
She's a very tough marker and her feedback is nonexistent as it is often illegible, she also focuses too much on gender roles rather than actual english. Don't ask her for help on citations because she'll tell you that she is not open to helping you with it (which defeats the purpose of being a teacher?) because she wants prize who does it the best
She only focuses and teaches on gender stereotypes and roles. after a couple weeks it got REALLY old. Shes kind of funny, but just not the vibe. Bought a book we didnt touch once. every story and every lecture is about males, females, dominance, and everything stereotype. no regular read a book and write an essay. I would try to find a diff class
I took both English 1100 & 1123 with this prof. Her courses are more heavily focused on gender theory but she does assign some interesting reading. Grading is mostly based on your essays but she does have some other assignments that are straightforward if you pay attention. She gives great feedback and will help you with essays before its due.
Caroline is old school but great. There was no focus on gender roles in my 1123 class as other reviews mention. If you read the material and think and write critically, you'll do well. She goes over all material and offered multiple assignments for bonus marks.
Really kind, but be prepared to read books since she'll quiz you on them. Very helpful and insightful with feedback.
She is a very nice and fun teacher. The assignments are too difficult but you do need to work on them quite a bit to get a good grade. Her feedback is sometimes very good and sometimes not, my one complaint is that in your writing she pushes her own narrative so you have to follow whatever she talks about in terms of books and not what you think.
Harv is a very kind and interesting spirit unfortunately, I found her very unpleasant as a teacher. She was bad at grades/feedbacks and very lecture boring. She did not allow anyone to go to the bathroom unless it was break, and if you tried she would stop her lesson and shut you down. She also kept stating that she was the best prof in langara
never take class with her tough marker and picky
Don't take this course with her unless you want to experience a nightmare These are the sentences you will hear hundreds of times in her class "It is not my duty to tell you what to do.If I tell you, it means that it is my work, not your work.I can't explain follow the instructions. The funniest part is that her instructions are not clear.
Caroline was a bit of a tough marker, but she would give us days to book an appointment to show our essay drafts while giving tips. There are reading quizzes on the books, so study the assigned pages. She taught us theories and terms that must be studied from each book as it would apply to the group presentations and the final exam.
Professor Harvey has a particular teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be rewarding. Attend lectures, read the material, and use resources like unstuck AI for study prep. The workload is manageable if you put in the effort.
Caroline has very political views and will voice this. Her choice in readings will reflect this. To get a good grade you just need to be a relatively good writer, and take note of what her stance is as she essentially tells you what to write on. If you are religious, you wont enjoy this class as she seems to very much dislike the christian church.
Incredibly hard grader
she doesn't help her students as much as she should
She presents the lessons in a very engaging way and will help you throughout your writing journey with guidelines and tips. Even if you did not fully read the material, she highlights the important stuff throughout the class. Overall, I really like her 1123 class and would recommend it for people who prefer a mentor-type figure for an instructor.
she is kind, helpful and has reasonable expectations. I learned a lot about how to read academic articles. we only read one short book and the writings where pretty sociological (relating to consumerism and postmodernism) if that is interesting to you. She gave everyone a one-on-one for the final paper, it was helpful. You have to put the work in.
Horrible experience. Very hard marker. Do not take her class if you want to maintain a high GPA
Caroline is one of the best professors:DD She's considerate, insightful, and hilarious! Although she might seem difficult, she actually cares about her students and gives us many opportunities to earn grades. Her lectures require lots of reading and group discussion, but don't worry—they're all interesting!
Prof Harvey definitely cares about her students however, she is very wary of AI use and will accuse students of using it even if you didn't. She does give an opportunity to prove your work is original but the whole process was extremely stressful. She also is very against computers or phones so be sure to bring pen and paper for notes.
You are not allowed to use computers and GOODLUCK because she loves to talk about a ton of politics!
Caroline is not that bad of a prof tbh. However she likes things done in a particular way. Shes very old school and will get very angry at the sight of any sort of technology in class. Pen and paper is the only way to take notes, doesnt post slides so you better write fast and attend class. Ive heard other teachers are easier.
I can see why a lot of students wouldn't like her, but Caroline seems to really care about her students who try. She is anti technology so bring paper and pencils. If you put the effort in and listen during lectures, you'll do well. She can be a bit pretentious sometimes (lol) but I think she's a pretty good professor.
