i took her chick lit UW class and it was hard but my favorite. The class was interesting and fun and she was adorable and always joking. She wants everyone to do well and will have meetings outside of class a lot. I got a C on my first paper but ended up with an A in the class. FAVORITE professor! take this class!
Great Professor! She's very helpful, Though UW20 is a whole lot of writing and hard work it's pays off in the end with your grade. I highly would recommend her!!
She is a very good teacher but a strict grader. She will not sugarcoat things on your papers! There were only four big papers throughout the semester but you really worked thoroughly on them. Even though it was challenging, I learned a lot! And she's really cool too.
This was the best class of the semester. Although we had a few papers to write Dr. Smith made them fun and interesting. If you ever take UW20 please take it with Smith. Although a tough grader she is always helpful and will give you what you need in order to pass the class with a good grade. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
First time she's taught "Fight Club" as her UW subject. Don't be misleaded though, she is one of the hardest/most demanding prof's you'll ever have here. Assaults you with negative comments on your papers and constantly gives tons of busy work that distracts you from focusing solely on your papers. Be cautious about having her as a professor.
Take this class! It is very challenging but very clear and extremely helpful. Even if you are not fond of writing, don’t worry, you will learn a lot and this class will get you ready writing college papers. Also, don’t worry about the topic so much. You’ll be surprised to see how flexible the topic is. The class was very fun!
Takes points off for absences, readings are boring, she does teach useful things, DO NOT GET ON HER BAD SIDE. take another professor if you can.
She's really nice but a super strict grader. four big essays in this class.
Amazing professor that actually teaches on the college level. There are four big papers but they are scaled in a very favorable manner. Is a lovely person and tries to help as much as she can to improve you writing. Her grading might not be the most lenient but by the end of the semester you have definitely become a better writer.
Not a particularly good teacher. She is an incredibly harsh grader and will take no pity on you if you come in for help. She has no problem handing out bad grades and no matter how nice she may seem in class, her grading proves otherwise. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER!
Very very very harsh grader. Not only were the grades too harsh, but they were given based on things i felt were superfluous. Very nice person though.
Very nice person, and you will definitely learn in this class, the only thing to watch out for is her harsh grading, the class is worth it though
Excellent teacher! Though it is not easy to get high marks, this class will improve your writing. If you are wary of her I comments on future essays your grades will go up anyway (mine were C, B-, B+, A). Extremely fair and will give help.
I love her. Great professor, harsh grader, but you learn a LOT. My writing improved a lot as well. I was close to an A- last semester. Make sure you pay attention to her comments on your papers - they're helpful and making improvements on your papers will definitely help your grade. Take her class!
She's really fun and nice. The class itself is great, she's just a tough grader. If you want to improve your writing and not just waste time in a random UW class, take hers. She makes the subject and writing interesting. She's funny and obviously really cares about her students. Highly recommend her.
Great Professor! As an international student without English as my first language, the course is challenge for me at first. But Dr Smith is so kind and willing to help me! I took advantage of the office hour and her comments. Finally, I got A (A-,A-,A, A)Unbelievable! Highly recommend!
Dr.Smith is THE BEST writing professor! she is helpful, focused and extremely kind. She is also really funny! Tough grader, but she will teach you the essence of writing! Loved each and every one of her classes! Highly recommend ... I was in the Personal is Political: Women's Autobiographies class
I LOVE Dr. Smith. She is a difficult grader, but she also one of those teachers that is more likely to help you if you show you are really trying to improve. I got a C on my first paper, but an overall A- in the class because she helped to improve my writing so much. I can't stress enough what a good teacher she is.
She's nice and fun and I enjoyed going to her class. That being said, she did not TEACH anything and is a Horrible grader. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA. Take it if you like good conversation though - Also she's always on about feminism which gets annoying after a while [But makes sense coz she usually teaches WLP classes]
Smith's nice and a good teacher, but an unduly harsh grader. On the final paper, she surprised a lot of people by giving them C's when they were expecting grades in the B+ range.
Mad Men is an interesting topic for UW20, but it is extremely difficult to conduct research upon, since it is non-traditional close reading, and there are very limited scholarly research to refer. Dr. Smith is a very nice and willing-to-help professor. However, she is also a harsh grader. Do remember that she gives a 2% final grade bonus for prefec
Dr. Smith is extremely helpful and kind. She truly cares about her students, and she sincerely takes time to read everyone's work. Our Mad Men UW was fun, original, and thought-provoking. Take this class with her!
Dr. Smith is both a wonderful professor and person. I took her Politics of the Kitchen class, and loved it. Go to her office hours! Great class discussion, and great spot to meet fellow foodies!! Please note- she IS a tough grader. I ended up with a B+ and consider myself a pretty decent writer. Still, I'd take it again. Best UW professor out ther
She can be a truly great professor to her favorites. If you somehow get on her bad side she is unforgiving and will treat you terribly for the rest of the semester. She can be very unfair and has some ridiculous rules that make it stressful to go to class.
Amazing teacher. I'm obsessed with her and we talk all the time. If you make the effort she will make the effort to help you. She's great and I wish I could take more classes with her.
Amazing teacher. I'm a regular college dude and her "Feminist Filmmakers" class was still extremely interesting and probably the best class I had freshman year. But yes, she does grade hard, but not unfairly. If you read her feedback you will agree with all of it. I'd rather get a hard fought b+ than an undeserved A+.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. She is always willing to meet with you and discuss your papers! I found that when I met with her, I scored at the average or above. She is great to talk to and ALWAYS gives helpful feedback. If you want to do well, you have to do the work but I found it enjoyable. DO NOT BE LATE OR SKIP, she will call you out.
I took the Mad Men UW with Smith and I don't regret it at all- I had significantly more work than my friends in other UWs but I feel like my writing dramatically improved through this class. If you're nice to her and do the work she'll be happy to help you with your work. If you haven't seen any of Mad Men the class will be a bit harder for you.
A tough grader, but willing to work with you if you take advantage of office hours. Really enjoyed the class. If you don't go to class regularly you probably won't do very well.
I love Professor Smith. I took her class on Romantic Comedies, which I am not interested in at all, but she made them extremely interesting. She's extremely engaging and doesn't pressure anyone to participate. I loved this class, but make sure you read her grading criteria well before you submit anything!
Dr. Smith is the best professor I've had at GWU. She is incredibly intelligent and makes UW extremely beneficial. She helped improve my writing tremendously. With all of that said, she is a tough grader and expects a lot from her students. Totally worth it though. She is nice, funny and gives great feedback.
In terms of UWs it's not that much work, 3 short 2 page assignment and then 1 10-12 page research essay at the end. She is a very tough grader, especially on the short assignments. However, if you go to her she will give specific feedback, which will boost your grade a lot. Also, go to class! She gives extra credit if you have perfect attendance.
Make sure you go to her office hours! She will read through your paper and give good advice since often grading criteria is unclear or not specific. Also helps because she's a tough grader. Good class though, I really enjoyed it and worked my ass off for a good grade
She was the best professor I've ever had; however, she does expect you to match her level and does not lower her expectations. She is super helpful in her office hours and will tell you what to do to get the grade you want. She's very passionate about her work and will do whatever for you to succeed. I loved her and the class.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor, and someone that I respect immensely. She is a tough grader, but fair, and easy to access in office hours. She makes her expectations very clear and will hold you to them, but if you put in the work, you can succeed in her class. She is very knowledgeable about her subject matter, and cares about her students!
Tough Tough Tough Grader!! Although she is nice and the class material is interesting, I still won't take her class again. I didn't learn anything about writing, but I did learn something about film. Prepare to receive an undesired grade even you contributed a lot!! If you are a GPA minded student, avoid her class.
Dr Smith is by far one o the best teachers I've ever had. She is FUNNY and made going to UW fun rather than painful. She is always willing to help and gives great feedback. The work in her class is spread out and trust me, it helps you manage it more effectively rather than doing it all the night before. Makes life easier. TAKE HER!!
Great experience! Dr. Smith is a tough grader but she makes herself very available to students. Going to her before an assignment is due almost guarantees a good grade if you follow her suggestions. Though she can be tough, there really isn't that much work and she is a really funny, genuine professor. If you put in the work, you WILL do well!
Gives a lot of work but it is all manageable and extremely clear. She cares about her students and likes to see them do well; she is always available outside of class and always answers emails. Assignments are purposeful and fair. She is a tough grader and expects a lot from her students but I would recommend taking her classes, I learned a lot!
Dr. Smith is so cool. Very passionate about what she teaches. She is a strict grader but her requirements are made clear on the rubric so be sure to read that. Not an easy A UW but worth it in my opinion. She gives great feedback on essays and makes herself and the UW resources very accessible. She genuinely listens to students and is very open.
I love Dr. Smith. She gives great feedback and is willing to meet with you outside of class to look at your work. She is kind and very passionate about her work. I would highly recommend this class!
MOST AMAZING PROF. She is super organized so you know exactly what to expect and will give you detailed feedback if you ask. And her classes are super interesting. Took RomCom class and part of hwk was watching movies. You do a lot of work but its an amazing class and shes an amazing teacher. Highly recommend
Probably my favorite professor right now (as a freshman). She really takes the time to critique your work and grade them truthfully with a lot of nuance and comments. She's also such a charismatic teacher and time will definitely fly by in this class. I 100% recommend her if you have to take a UW class.
Dr. Smith is super kind and an overall great professor. I would take her again if I could. I took Happily Ever After? Writing About Rom-Coms and throughly enjoyed it. Other than quizzes on movies and readings, there are four big assignments in the class including the research paper. She also allows for a re-write at the end of the semester.
She is the best!!! Please take her if you can. She is funny, passionate, personable, smart, and makes everyone comfortable and welcome in her class. Wish I could take all of her courses.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher. She is considerate and has great insight. She is, however, a notorious, self-proclaimed ridiculously tough grader. She gives great feedback, and directions are usually pretty clear, but if you miss directions your grade will definitely feel it. It is a great class, just know you won't get an A.
Dr. Smith is an amazing, caring, and well-respected professor. Her classes are always fun to be in and thought-provoking. With that being said, she is a VERY tough grader and doesn't just hand out A's. You will have to work to do well, but it is not hard to do so with such an amazing professor and class.
She's so kind, funny, and caring! She really takes time to help students and is always willing to help with papers outside of class. Grading can be tough, but she does this to make you work harder. Her feminist filmmakers class was so interesting and is something she knows a lot about. Feedback on papers is extremely detailed. Go to office hours!!!
Very cool and caring but harsh grader w/ specific details so go to office hours (more than once if you want an A). Overall, class was fun w/ cool ppl & if you're interested in the subject def take her. If not, it's not an easy A, participate & attend all the group meetings bc it will count.
Dr. Smith is one of the best professors at GW. She is funny, cares about her students, and is hip to pop culture (and loves to talk about it in class!). She expects a lot from her students but gives clear guidelines for assignments. As long as you meet with her outside of class and put in an honest effort you should do just fine. Take her class!
Dr. Smith is truly an AMAZING professor. The assignments you do throughout the semester are used as part of your final research paper. If you participate in class and go to office hours you can really learn a lot. She cares about her students a lot and keeps class super engaging even though it's online. I would recommend this class to any freshman!
LOVED Dr. Smith! She made my first semester of college (especially online) so much better. Her rom-com class is so fun and interesting so I didn't mind all our writing assignments. She gives great feedback and really helps you understand what you need to work on. She's a bit of a tough grader but as long as she sees you're working hard she'll help!
An amazing professor teaching an amazing class. My only qualm is she's a tough grader. If you don't go to OH weekly, you'll have trouble getting an A. Smith is sweet, understanding, and class is fun. There are three assignments that build up to a research project and a Friday assignment. Genuinely my fav teacher at GW so far. Take this UW!!
Such a delight having her! She is very fair and understanding. Although she is critical, she provides great feedback and is regularly available for meeting outside of class. Class is structured in a way to build up to the final 10 page research project but she offers much revision time. She is very passionate about rom coms which make sit enjoyable
I love Dr. Smith, her class was so fun and interesting, and she's a really caring professor, who is always there to help you succeed. If you need to take a UW and love romcoms, definitely take her class
Dr. Smith is undoubtedly the best UW professor at GW. It's not an easy A, but if you take your time to sit down with her and understand how to improve your writing, she will prepare you like no other professor can. She is very understanding with deadlines and personal struggles as well. Great course content (romcoms) and amazing class environment.
Provides clear rubrics and the readings/movies given are interesting. Is a tough grader though and doesn't give out As easily; make sure you go to office hours and read feedback to do well. I just don't think it's worth taking her for UW since other classes are way less work, especially when u have other work to focus on. Take an easier UW.
I really enjoyed having Dr Smith as a professor. She was clearly so passionate about the subject matter and you could tell she was really knowledgeable as a scholar in her field. I don't know what else to say except that I really enjoyed this class and think that Dr Smith will be one of the best professors I will ever have. xoxo
This class was AMAZING, not an esay A but worth it. Dr. Smith is so caring and understanding towards her students. There are 4 writing assignments throughout the semester, an abstract, lens application, lit review, and a 10-page paper. This class helped me develop my writing so much. You are also watching movies and writing about them Great Class!
Dr. Smith is fantastic. Not an easy A, but she weights the assignments in a way that doing poorly on early ones won't tank your grade. She also allows you to rewrite one at the end of the semester. She's always willing to help you outside of class, cares about each of her students as a person, and wants everyone to do well. Take this UW!
Absolutely love her. Amazing professor who really cares about her students. She's funny and makes engagement in class easy. She's also very quick to reply to emails and willing to move deadlines for assignments. This class was hard though. The main assignments were very specific and she grades hard. But overall great class, amazing professor.
If you enjoy romantic comedies and are looking for a UW class, I can't recommend Dr. Smith enough. It was honestly probably the most engaging class I had this semester. While it isn't an easy A, and you will have to dedicate some time to it outside of class, Dr. Smith will be there to help every step of the way.
SHE IS THE BEST. Take her rom-com class. Its a really fun topic but you will have to put in effort for your grade. She is a tough grader and you will have assignments pretty much every week but it is all worth it. She gives great feedback, is really understanding, and makes class enjoyable.Everything she teaches, you will be using in other classes!
Dr. Smith was an incredible professor. Her grading was pretty strict, but she gave amazing feedback that genuinely made my writing better. The class is designed to build up to the final research paper, which was very helpful. Lectures are very engaging and interesting. Def not the easiest UW due to grading and amount of readings, but worth it.
Dr. Smith was the best professor I have had at GW so far. Although I was dreading taking UW, she made it actually enjoyable. She is super knowledgeable about movies and pop culture. She is so understanding of personal issues and always made me feel cared for as an individual. She is funny and also gives great writing feedback. Take her class!!!
Dr. Smith is so kind and funny, and she really cares about her students. You have to work hard outside of class, but it's not very difficult to get a good grade if you put in effort. Participating in class is also very important, and Dr. Smith makes class discussions enjoyable and easy to partake in.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. She is passionate about the material and goes out of her way to help students. There is a good amount of homework that includes readings with questions along with projects it is manageable. She is always willing to meet and sends emails with lots of feedback. She makes her class so close and comfortable, the best!
Dr. Smit is INCREDIBLE! This is the best class that I've ever taken and I can't recommend it enough. There is a lot of work outside of class but it is all worthwhile and Dr. Smith makes class very fun. Expectations are very clear for all assignments and if you put the work in you can get a good grade. She is super caring and gives amazing feedback!
I would 100% take Dr. Smith's uw1020 course again. She is so incredibly kind and truly cares about the successes of her students. She makes the 10-12 research project so manageable and provides amazing feedback along the way.
Dr. Smith was great. Highly recommend
Funny and engaging during lectures, commonly sharing insight about her life and trying to make students engaged in class. Requires a 10-12 page research paper, but she checks in with you about it many times, and the free range we were given in choosing a topic allowed my experience writing the paper to be somewhat enjoyable.
STEM major here. Although I don't love reading and writing for school, Dr.Smith was so incredibly sweet that I had to come here and write a good review. This woman literally made herself flashcards to remember each student's name and some personal details. She gives very good feedback and I feel like a better writer after taking her.
10/10 recommend Professors Smith's UW 1020 on Communicating Feminism!! She really peaked my interest in feminism and had such an open and welcoming classroom energy. Final paper was long but she gave lots of time and feedback to have our turn in date before finals started. Really felt like she wanted to get to know her students individually.
Dr. Smith is genuinely one of the kindest teachers I have ever had, and it is clear how much she cares about this course, the content, and her students. I took this specific UW class just because it fit into my schedule, but I have enjoyed this class so much more than I expected. Light workload, fun classes, and helpful grading. Highly recommend!
Dr. Smith is an amazing teacher. Very understanding and caring. I great way to be introduced to gw. Participation in class in some aspect in necessary however she understands that not everyone is as chatty as other. A very fun person to have a class with
Genuinely the most flexible and caring professor I've had my whole freshman year. Her classes are very human and collaborative and exceptionally easy to do well in as long as you work hard and apply her feedback. I made such a good choice taking her class, I'd recommend her 100x over and will likely try to take another class from her in the future.
I would recommend anyone take her for UW. She brings joy back into learning and is very human and just generally phenomenal. A chili pepper for Dr. Smith!!
omg best professor EVER. The best to ever do it - if u need to take a UW take her and matter of fact if she has any course offerings take her. Take her by all means necessary
Dr. Smith is the best! She is so kind and caring, and makes an effort to connect with her students. She made UW so much fun. She has fair grading criteria and the workload is not bad.
Dr. Smith is absolutely the best! She's so caring and truly respects all her students. I definitely recommend her to everyone—her classes are always engaging
Dr. Caroline Smith is owed, genuinely, the highest regard. She structures her class clearly and thoughtfully, and is more than willing to accommodate to student needs. Honestly, I have prided myself on writing skills for years, but her course thoroughly taught me how to truly write well for college (and beyond). She also is so caring and kind!
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. She is extremely helpful, engaging, and genuinely cares about her students success. Her teaching is clear, and she knows exactly how to guide students when they need extra support. She is always available for one-on-one help. I learned a lot and my writing improved significantly! Highly recommend taking her class!
I love her. Nothing else to say besides the fact that she's hilarious, super understanding, and genuinely cares about u as a person.
Dr. Smith has been one of my most charismatic and funniest professors this semester! Loved going to her class!! Attendance is mandatory but if you miss a class she usually designates a classmate to fill you in so don't worry if you're not feeling well and need to miss. I loved how comfortable everyone felt to share their perspective.
She is literally so sweet and amazing! The only thing I'd have to say is that sometimes her instructions can be a little unclear, and the timing for assignments in the class can be a little difficult. Other than that, she is a super thorough, funny, caring professor.
Dr. Smith was so kind and a great professor to have first semester. She was genuinely caring towards all her students and took an interest in our lives outside of class. The only issue I would have is the timeline she had for her projects, but as long as you manage your time well and take the extension when needed, you'll absolutely be fine.
One of my favorite professors, I highly recommend this class! Instructions for assignments were sometimes unclear, but she is extremely approachable after class and is open to scheduling out-of-class meetings to give feedback on the writing assignments.
The assignment instructions were unclear, and the course lacked structure and organization. Lectures often went off topic, and I rarely felt like I learned much. She is a kind person, but the teaching style didn't work for me. In hindsight, I wish I had switched to Professor Donovan's class.
LOVE her she is very understanding and is a pop culture queen. Her doctorate is in chick lit and she's published in a lot of pop culture/fun things so can def talk to her about it!
Dr. Smith truly wants her students to succeed. She is very understanding and easy to approach. She values those who come to her classes prepared so as long as you keep ahead on the readings and participate in the discussions you will be fine.
