i was terrified of this class prior to taking it, but she makes it as un-stressful as it can be. the longest speech is 5-7 minutes, so its not that bad. also: dont sweat the impromptu speech, the topics are things like "shoes", "your fave ice cream", "a vacation", and "best/worst date youve ever been on".

I really don't enjoy public speaking. However, Prof. Babcock taught me a lot and made it really easy for me to get an A in the class without being good at speaking. It's really impertinent that you attend as many classes as possible, though. You lose a lot of participation points if you miss class.

Dr. Babcock makes it totally clear what she expects from you. It is hard to mess up the speeches because there are so many drills and activities to prepare you fro them. Very strict and precise in what she wants, but she knows what she is talking about. When you have to give a speech later it won't help you if your speech teacher was too easy. I thought that Prof. Babcock was condescending, maybe even rude. Some didn't want to participate in class because she would make you feel like an idiot. Prof Babcock gets along with most students. However, you have to know what topics interest her, she's crazy biased. The only person who got an A in my class did all their speeches about Macs, bikes, and vegans. She's also really confusing when she grades. If you are respectful towards her, do the work, show up to class, and raise your hand once in a while, you will do well in the class. The only way you could have trouble in this class, is if you do what she explicitly tells you not to do at the beginning of the semester. 1. Don't walk into the middle of the class while someone is giving a speech 2. Print out your stuff ahead of time. If you show up, do your work, and go to extra help sessions it's ok. My main issue with Dr. Babcock is that she thinks her class (Media Literacy Theory) is your most important course of the quarter. It's not. There are quizzes every day and even a doctor's note wont get you out of a 0 if you miss class. A 0 on a quiz is a big deal. She also refuses to correspond via email in 2015. Avoid her if possible.
