Very interesting class, assdignments not difficult even though some take time (It is web design, of course). Forum easy, no tests, only forum and assignments, prompt reply to questions. Very helpful. Easy class, fair grading.
This is a fun class, and she is a very good teacher. The guy who does the audio part is really good, too. If you are just getting started, this is a perfect class.
I took both of these classes - online. Both classes were challenging, yet a pleasure to take. I found them to be artistically very satisfying and insightful. You learn from these courses. Carolyn is an excellent instructor and uses the online venue for instruction very well. Excellent well taught courses.
I liked this class a lot - I wasn't sure about taking this online, but it worked out really well. She's a very good teacher!
I took the online class. Instructor was ok. She has alot of knowlege. I didn't learn as much as I hoped though with Photoshop, InDesign, & Illustrator. Sadly, I felt I gained very little from this class. I feel only slighly more capable than when I started. I think the online class is pretty new though, so maybe the material will mature.
I took Carolyn's in person Intro to Graphic Design class. We had a lot of guest speakers, which was awesome. She's a great teacher. Once a week we all did presenations on our homework, which felt dry to me. She moves fast and you will learn a lot about CS2 - she's good at teaching technical skills.
Always interesting projects. Learned a lot from teacher and classmates. The textbook was interesting. Quizzes, no test. Brown was available for chat with students in online course --very cool. Knowledgeable and up-to-date. Let students turn things in late; they were phantom classmates, adding nothing to the learning experience (only complaint).
I took her online class. Easy to fall behind assignment-wise, & you don't learn much beyond the basics, but it was interesting to learn new parts of design. I didn't always agree with what she thought design-wise, but it was still a very good learning process. The tutorials are a major plus for learning a few new techniques. Glad I took this class.
She is very available, gives great feedback on student work, and the course is organized and easy to follow.
Good intro class but boring! She doesn't teach or give guidance during her in-class sessions she mostly just tries to get guest speakers to come. She seems knowledgeable but her class would be better as a online class.
This class was great! The teacher brought in lots of guest speakers that told us about their careers and had useful job tips for the students. The projects were fun too, and the teacher answered all my questions.
took an online web design class, her tutorials, for the most part, are very easy to learn from. sometimes she does forget steps and the class will get confused, but she is pretty prompt to respond to questions and asks for feedback for her videos. great class, easy, and i learned a lot! i will continue to use her videos til i memorize the steps :)
Carolyn Brown is a gifted, on-line instructor at Foothill College who can teach anything and teach it well. I have taken Graphic Design, Web Design and Typography from her. She is a thoughtful, tough & brilliant instructor who crafts meaningful exercises using the most current tech. She only teaches on-line and is clearly at the top of the heap.
Teacher was very helpful for an online course. She respected that I was enrolled at my univ and let me work on my thesis in her class in conjunction with her assignments. always there to help and answer questions. submitting on YT helps a lot
Carolyn's classes are rare gems in online world. Very clear, well structured, you will learn tons. Unbelievably responsive and present for class. Really helpful and holds you to real world standards - will not sugar coat. Wants you to succeed. Highly ecommended.
I did kind of enjoy this class. She gives helpful links as resources, but thats all her teaching is a bunch of links. She can also leave passive aggressive comments, one which I was really taken aback by, and was just out right rude. I work my best, while working five days a week. She makes assumptions that are not true, and doesn't good feedback.
I have never used these programs prior to this class. She delayed grading a project until I gave her my file (though we only had to post a screenshot), I assume because she thought I cheated (never said). Learned a lot, but the videos used are attached to previous intro assignments. You need to look back to recall? You can't. Had to Google lots.
Makes the class (Graphic Design Studio 1) very interesting. Well structured tutorials and great ways to involve the newly learned techniques into assignments.
Lots of assignments online. Each one has an EXTREMELY clear tutorial to follow along with. Wish instructor comments were more evolved (comments are formulated wminimal extra feedback), but you'll definitely learn. No tests - everything is work-centered & video commentsassignments in addition to design HW. Wish I could have saved the lectures.
46 assignments (4 per week on average), each 5 points. No tests! Easy A if you just sit down and do the work. It's a skills assessment - no judgment on your creativity. I learned a ton and found it manageable while working full time. The teacher is super helpful if any questions come up and she is very clear. Would take any class from her again.
Professor Brown is really nice and helpful, she made the material look easy and interesting.
This was just my third online class and it turned out great. Even though most of what I was learning would take place using the computer, juggling the different areas where assignments were stored was sometimes challenging. Overall, Ms. Brown's tutorials were clear and instructive and she was there for all questions.
Great experience.
She really took the time to explain every step. Just make sure you follow the directions. I'm really glad I took her class.
This is the first online class I have been enjoying. Working and mother of two little kids, I really appreciated the structure and the clarity of the course map. I knew what to expected each week; no pop up assignments from a day to another which was the case with another instructor. Lectures are just perfect; she spent a lot of time to make them
Highly recommend this teacher. Carolyn divides the class work into small sections, so you have around 4 days to finish the assignments and this way you actually learn! Because you work a little everyday. She is always available if any questions arise. There is a little button "Click to talk to your teacher" and she replies instantly. A++++
Carolyn Brown is very helpful and will give notice if you are not doing something quite right allowing some reposting of big projects with corrections when the first submission is turned in early. I find her lectures and tutorials to be very precise and extremely useful. She was even willing to email me about the class even before I started it!
She's generally online, so you can ask her questions whenever. There is a decent amount of time for you to analyze and finish assignments each week, and each is relatively easy if you can get a grasp on the program. Her videos are a bit quiet, though, so be prepared to turn the volume up a bit.
I took two of her online classes: Graphic Design Studio I and Careers in the Visual Arts, I simply loved all the assignments, she is always so clear and creative I learned a lot.
This is my third class taught by Ms. Brown and I have to say that she has a really great handle on online coursework. She is always online for questions and if f
She has created one of the most clear syllabi I have ever seen. The learning curve is predictable, yet still challenging. Even though I still have a lot to learn about graphic design, I feel like she has set up a really strong foundation. She also cares. Great class for someone on a working schedule. Would recommend to my friends.
Carolyn is very helpful and is quick to respond to questions, which is vital in the online environment. I've taken several courses from her, and they've all been great.
Her digital painting 1 class was awesome. As long as you did the work and submitted everything on time and did it to the best of the ability you would get full credit or almost full credit. She was always very fast at responding to emails. I really enjoyed the digital painting class.
The instructor has good materials and thoughtful presentation. She is available for questions most of the time. The downside - the materials are for no more than 2-3 weeks, not an entire quarter. You will learn some but not a whole lot.
You have to study everyday from Mon-Thursday but each assignment and discussion is cool and fun! I love it! And I learnt a lot! Caroly is cool! She give you a chance to skip till 6 assignments and still get an A+
Awesome class. If you want a basic and fun way to learn how to Graphic Design. Take this class
She responds quickly to emails, very helpful, encouraging, makes you want to learn more. I would definitely keep taking classes from her. I had four classes this semester and she was my fave out of all the professors.
There wasn't much about graphic design in this class; mostly about how to use Adobe apps. Tutorials for the apps were pretty good, though at times very basic. You don't need to be shown how to open a file 100 times. Nothing you can't learn from online videos on your own. Feedback was minimal - canned responses. Not very useful. Wouldn't take again.
I was looking for an online class related to Indesign and took this one due to these reviews. I was a total novice to design, online classes and these programs, and without Carolyn's ongoing support, I wouldn't have done very well. Course expectations are clear, and she's very responsive. This was a really well presented class, and I learned a lot.
I took almost all the graphic design classes she teaches. She give you a bundle of knowledge and many different options to explore. Always online and give very quick reply. Very nice assignments and lecture. I highly recommend to take her classes.
Amazing teacher. She is always there for you. She is online most of the time to answer your questions. I love how the class is very interactive even tho it is online. Her assignments are easy and straightforward, but VERY time-consuming. I wish all her assignments are due the last day of the week (Friday) instead of every day from Mon to Thurs.
Great professor! Very understanding. Fun class. Learned a lot.
She was an A1 professor, took her time to respond to any concerns and questions I had in regards to the class. I appreciated her quick responses. I would recommend taking a class with her because she puts a lot of time and effort in her responses. Overall she was extremely helpful and the class was beneficial in learning about Graphic Design.
This was my first online class and I was very pleased with it and I have recommended it to friends. The online lectures are great! I can listen to them at a convenient time and I can listen as often as I want. Carolyn was very helpful at all hours of the day or night
Excellent teacher, very accessible and very helpful in bringing the student through a great online learning program. As to grading, I don't think an 'easy A' is a good metric for any class. Every class should require work to succeed and learn.
There are a lot to cover in a short time and a lot of assignments but it is through practice that the learning happens.
I learnt a lot about Adobe CC tools in this class. Carolyn has been very helpful . The course material and assignment were interesting and practical. I would recommend this class.
Prof. Brown was very helpful. She responds VERY quick if you need help. This was the clearest online class I've taken! Videos were to the point and applicable+easy quiz at the end. Her tutorials are very clear & informational. Expect to submit video recorded homework every week. She sends HW reminders the day they're due. Awesome class! I Loved it!
Carolyn is very helpful, friendly and often available instantly. She is very clear, and her assignments are clear, too. She is very courteous and professional.
She is dedicated but not flexible. She is inspirational and teaches with a lot of fun applications. Sometimes they are very didactic, sometimes not so much. Overall I like her and I think she does a good job as a teacher.
Great professor! I really enjoyed taking her class.
great teacher and very easy if you do the assuagement and participate
All instructions are very clear which encourage students to continue learning. Very well-planned lectures. Very quick response to students whenever students need help, even at 11pm.
This is my third online class with Ms. Brown. I've grown to like her style of teaching and I like that she is very responsive when I have a question or an issue. Assignment instructions are clear and she used a diverse range of teaching applications that made learning about careers in visual arts very interesting.
Ms. Brown is a very dedicated and helpful teacher. She responds within 30 seconds to most of my questions even thoughts it is online and often very late. The class overall is VERY easy and fun. You learn a lot about Adobe tools!
She is really a good teacher, I recommend her class.
Carolyn was very responsive and helpful whenever I chat with her. Her short tutorial videos are easy to follow and make the weekly workload more manageable.
The assignments can get annoying with all the start/stop click here tutorials and half of the assignments are pretty long. But the class is extremely easy. Nice teacher.
One of the best instructors I've ever taken. She's very knowledgeable and gives really good feedback. She gives step-by-step instructions for each assignment, so it's near to impossible to mess up anything. I definitely recommend her class to anyone that is interested in working with Adobe programs.
It was an online class though you were in a real one. She helped a lot to solve problems and she was available mostly all the time.
I didn't know practically about web designing and in this class, I learnt a lot. Now I am designing my portfolio website and it was because of this fantastic class, I had.
Ms. Carolyn is a pro with an online class. Assignments and deadlines are clear. If you always do the work on time, you will get a good grade. You will learn a lot about Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. The course is essentially learning the programs and learning to pay attention to details, two good designer skills. The workload is reasonable.
Ms. Carolyn is a pro at online classes. Everything is organized, and you know what you have to do and when you have to do it. The class is designed for two things - learning Indesign, Illustrator, an Photoshop, and learning to notice details. Great designer skills. Do your work on time and with a reasonable amount of effort , and you will do well.
Ms. Brown was accessible each time I had a question, even at odd hours, and she was well organized. We received lots of Adobe practice Being new to Adobe CC, the class took a lot of time. I wouldn't recommend it to someone balancing a ft job. Adobe products were covered more than design principles. Not bad, but heads up. I appreciated the class.
Carolyn Brown is one of the best teachers that I've ever had. When you have a question online she will answer it right away unless shes offline then she will respond after you leave her a question. She has a clear grading method if you don't turn it in by the day it's due then you fail that assignment.
She is a great teacher, I always found the answers whenever I questioned her in less time. The videos she kept were good
Very attentive
I loved the videos for the assignments and the tutorials were very clear. I seldom had to ask questions, and when I did, I received helpful feedback.
I have taken other online classes before but I didn't have a good experienced so I was kind of nervous to take another one, but I'm so happy that I did because Ms. Carolyn Brown gives amazing lectures what I love the most about this class was that she was always there to help, she explain everything in great detail, and she is very understandable.
I appreciated that she gave detailed lectures on each Adobe program we used. It was very helpful to look back on.
Mrs. Brown was a pretty good teacher in which she was very good at making the tutorials for all the assignments although she could redo those tutorials on the latest versions of the Adobe apps. She also gives very easy quizzes with the answers inside the videos so pay attention. Other than that and some other minor issues I would recommend her.
Very easy modules that walk you through the different adobe programs. Each week has a webcam activity, and at two-three design projects. If you follow directions they are pretty easy and fun. Carolyn is a great teacher and she utilizes various tools pretty well.
Fun and informative class to take. I feel that I have a good grasp of the basics of the adobe programs that you learn in this class. For an online class, it's very interactive and you participate in weekly video activities with the class. The projects start of very easy in the beginning and become a little more time-consuming as you go.
She is very clear in all directions for projects and grades fairly. She is always there to respond to emails and is easy to get along with. I really liked all of her projects and I learned a lot while being in her class. It was a great time!
Clear lecture
Such a great online course! This professor really knows what she is doing and her online course is very clear and linear.
I've taken several online class, and professor Carolyn Brown is by far the best online teacher I've had, her lectures are clear, organized, and very interesting. I'm so used to classes where we have countless useless assignments, each and every assignment in Carolyn's classes are extremely useful, I've learned so much in her classes!
Excellent mix of graphic design concepts and applied use in Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. The video tutorials (this was an online class) were clear and instructive. Highly recommended.
She was so helpful and one of the most attentive professors I've ever had. She's almost always available if you need help and she's very kind and supportive! I took this class because it both filled a requirement and I was really interested in it. But don't think it's an easy A! She grades based on your effort because she's passionate about art.
This is the second time I had this teacher. She is very helpful and gives you great feedback.
I've had some instruction on InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator before. Her teaching method was the best -- by far. In her online class, the videos are awesome. They go thru things step-by-step. If you don't see the desired result -- back up the video and try again. Be prepared to work -- she gives 5 assignments per week. Some take a long time.
Very fun class. Assignment due everyday but they help you practice and improve. Easy to follow online tutorials. No exams or papers. Would recommend for graphic designers.
If you follow her instructions and homework correctly, it would be easy to get a high grade
A good balance of theory and practice. The concepts were clear & easy to understand and videos were interesting to watch. The assignment instructions were clear. Carolyn should have talked to me first before accusing me of something I didn't do but the issue got resolved and I gained valuable insight from her feedback. Overall a really good course!
Great class. had previous understanding of some of the concepts and assignments. made it easy. good tutorials and projects to learn.
Really great teacher. Very good at being there to help you when you need it. Is very quick to responding to messages. Gives a decent amount of homework. Overall great class :)
80% of the time you are learing from watching instructional videos you can find on the internet yourself. The you take what you learned from those videos/articles and apply them to an assignment. It just feels a lot like something I can do on my own time. Easy A, but tedious if you know art, and/or want to learn.
If you want to get into digital painting, this is how to do it. If you put a little work into it, you will learn an amazing amount, but if you just want to just play with it a little, it is an easy A. Have no fear whatsoever if you have no drawing/painting skills. I was sorry the class was over, so I signed up for Digital Painting II next quarter.
Enjoyed it. Got some skills. Extra credit keeps GPA up high. No prerequisites, start at basics. Take the class. Assignments are even a little exciting sometime. And is so organized. Everything is clear. Her videos choice keeps being right on. Such a pleasant teacher.
I liked how the class was balanced between learning graphic design principles and learning InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator skills. The videos were clear and it was great to be able to redo the videos if something didn't click the first time. Ms. Brown is very fast with grading so you always know where you stand. Be prepared to spend time!
Highly recommend. The class was enjoyable and I learned a lot.
Kind, caring, and always helpful. Great Professor! Taking more classes with her. Highly recommended! Learned a lot and enjoyed doing the work.
I learned to use the tools in this class, but that's the extent of it. You're given a criteria for techniques shown in the tutorials and you apply it to your assignments. This is one of those classes where you learn as much as you really want to.
This class was awesome! The teacher lets you choose what you want to do and how you want to do it. You get a lot of time to complete your assignments and you can make many graphic designs for your portfolio. The teacher always grades quickly and answers questions right away, very helpful.
She took all design classes, f2f classes are very rare at FH. First of all instead of midterm and final, you will have to write a review about class, and she will grade it. No artwork, no creativity! You won't learn anything from the class because simply she does not teach anything. All her classes are equally a disaster! I feel sorry about my time
I absolutely love this class. The professor is attentive. She noticed I was falling behind and struggling and offered to help me instead of giving me a zero. The structure of the assignments makes it easy to understand. The best part is the step-by-step videos she takes the time to make. I recommend this class as I have successfully learned design.
Carolyn is a great professor. I took her online Graphic Design I class and although the class was purely online, she was always available to help me out whenever I needed it. The lesson plans are easy to follow and she provides constructive criticism on all assignments, which is very helpful.
Loved her class, excellent teacher!
She helps a lot trying to explain if something is not quite understandable for you. I don't speak English perfectly as a native speaker will do. I have to spend more time when something is not very clear to me. she is always ready to help and answer questions. She answers right away. It's the first time I'm excited to do homework for a class.
Professor Brown is a lovely teacher who really cares for her students. She has been very helpful in light of financial issues, the current pandemic, and other situations that have arose. She taught this class very well and I feel like I learned a lot. I hope people choose to take her classes, because shes a knowledgeable, creative teacher!
I took this class with no graphic design background. It was a great introduction to UI/UX design as a whole. Each week we got to choose a different project and then critique our peers. I liked the structure of the class and the professor was so easy to speak to if we had questions. She answered my question even late at night!
Prof. Brown is an amazing online teacher. I never thought I could succeed outside the traditional the classroom, but she was with me every step of the way. I never had such a caring instructor. She will always give you an extensions and sometimes excuse and assignments when you are dealing with real-life issues like pandemics and stress..
I really enjoy this class. My teacher supports my personal authentic creativity. There are so many options I can choose activities for my creative journey. The feedback comments are encouraging and if you put some time to be creative it's easy to get an A.
She is an awesome proffesor! I like the way she teaches.
She is a very kind teacher and always very helpful. You can easily contact her at any time and she will respond as soon as possible. She also made the class very fun to take!
Carolyn is so cool! Very clear instructions, a little video-heavy but they're usually short and to the point, and she uses goofy filters which makes them a little more fun. Really easy to get in touch with and an easy grader.
good for uiux beginners, but if you've already seen a tutorial or two you won't learn much more or improve. there's no lecture, she just reposts youtube videos that were already free. She also has everyone peer grade each other, sometimes fun but you can't move on until someone else gives you feedback. should've just self-learned for free
I really like this class. I never expected I would be able to learned how to build professional prototypes with buttons and animations that worked like a real app on my phone. It was fun to use my classmates creative ideas tp take my prototypes to the next level. Ms. Brown was really patient and always available to reach out when I needed support.
Professor Brown was very accessible for office hours, and easy to contact.
I enjoyed taking the online GD class with Professor Brown.
I was having maybe the roughest quarter due to MAD work and school and of course covid. I was behind and the professor TEXTED ME to make sure I would pass. I do feel bad that I wasnt able to be there as much as I could but this class and the professor SUPER awesome. I looked forward to taking another class with them!
It's a great class to be introduced to the world of UX/UI. One suggestion I would make to improve the class is more time should be spent on user research in order to gather user feedback to justify the designs that are made to the prototypes so that if one chooses to create a portfolio it is easier to articulate your design process and case study.
Teacher Brown was phenomenal! I learned so much in this class, and I felt supported throughout the class!
Professor Brown = INCREDIBLY AMAZING! I enjoyed the UI/UX course. Professor Brown was SO understanding & truly cares about student improvement & success. The feedback was excellent, & I learned a ton about user research & design! The lessons were super engaging & useful. I would highly recommend this Professor to anyone interested in UI/UX Design.
if you aren't planning on entering graphic design on a professional level, she's fine introductory! aspiring designers: take the De Anza class!!!! none of her homework is adobe based (outside express), even the digital assignments which is troubling because it's a given in the field. (rating based on what i got out of the class)
This instructor is amazing! Modules were fun & challenging & I love the way she offered many different ways to complete the assignments. Whether you chose to use manual drawing tools, phone apps, or pro apps like Adobe, you're guaranteed to get a good grade as long as you participated. She is so sweet and caring & really wants you to succeed! A+!
Took two classes with her last quarter (Typography and Graphic Design) and they were a breeze to pass through with her recommended practise and timely submissions. Projects covered a variety of topics with minimal homework weekly. Gives good feedback, responsive and the classes are easy for beginners too. Highly recommend :))
Carolyn is a flexible and caring teacher, and is almost always available to answer questions or provide guidance. Her courses are good as an introduction to the topic, but most of the teaching is done through YouTube videos and the assignments are somewhat repetitive.
I took a summer course which was short but I was able to learn basic ui/ux skills. One thing I wished she did was give detailed and personalized feedback for the assignments. She does give feedback but they're very vague and generalized. I would recommend to specifically ask for detailed feedback/critiques. Overall amazing professor, 100% recommend
