1st time taught course.Sum ses.No curve or EC.Read slides verbatim.Used previous profs questions for exams.Very tricky and detailed;some on mtrial not taught.Unfair way of grading(just TOOK OUT "flawed" questions; werent imo, said I was lucky I got them RIGHT even tho I showed my work)No oppor to discuss grade at end.Left country. My attendance~100%
I suggest taking this course in the Fall or Spr. This prof., although she knew so much about the subject matter, was difficult. There was NO curve. She only gave a midterm and final, which put so much pressure in terms of passing the course. She DID NOT make her own exams, and there4 possibly used Prof. Hart's difficult test Qs 4 both exams.
Needs to go back to school to learn how to grade and teach for that matter. First impressions can be deceiving(she looks and sounds nice but...) One word can sum up this professor...LAZY! Here's a novel idea; try making your own exams. Said during first class that she didn't believe in testing on material she didn't teach...maybe she has amnesia.
Difficult exams but very good at explaining the material at office hours. she seems really nice but don't be fooled.
She does not teach you the material that is on the test. Lectures are dry and rarely actually explains the material. Nothing from her lecture is on the exam. Best just to read the book and go to a T.A. or outside tutoring session for help.
I got an A. Know the slides first but read the book.
tough teacher covers everything in the book. you need to know everything and she doesn't curve well at all. emphasizes everything equally so you can't tell what is important which makes it so much harder. however, if you ask her to explain something in office hour she very helpful
very annoying. went so fast that its impossible to understand the concepts. u cant listen to her and take notes at the same cuz she goes way too fast. dont take her!
The fact that D'Arville is the only person who put up a Sakai site for the entire general biology class shows that she actually cares about her students. She's not the greatest lecturer, but tries to encourage students to come to class. She's pretty good. Make sure you read the book very carefully and follow her outline.
D'arvil reiterates the book during class. Class is not useful, she basically just reads out of the textbook. Exam questions are directly from the book. Just memorize the books.
darvil reads from the book during class. class not mandatory. to get an A in the class---read the book INTENSELY and every day little bits, also do the outlines detailed. d'arvil's exams are easier than martins--martins are more conceptual d'arvil straight up memorization
By far, I HATE D'arville more than any professor. Going to lecture is a complete waste of time (PROOF: in 101 I failed the 1st exam, stopping going to lecture and got a C for the course). In 102 I never went to lecture and am doing better than 101. She is arrogant and expects you to know way too much. These classes are hard, she makes it worse.
Her lectures are useless, nothing from them is on the exam, to do well on the exam you have to memorize every little detail in the book which can be hard when your taking other classes. Tests are ridiculously hard but the curve is huge. Overall she's a bad professor, and if you have her for bio good luck
Her PPT slides use size 12 font frequently to fit all her material up and on top of that, she goes pretty fast. A laptop is a must to keep up with taking notes in this class. The tests are straight from her notes, I got an A (in 101 and 102) from just studying my notes from lecture...
Horrible professor, the lectures are really dull and most of the slides take information and pictures verbatim from the book...i recommend going and watching your favorite tv show on your laptop to pass the time...for the exams, just know the book in and out and youll be good...i went to class 5 times during the year (for bio 2 as well)andgot an A
attended lecture about 4 times.. shes cool.. but really all you gotta do is read the book. read the book again. and read it again until you wanna burn it. read it until your eyes bleed. smoke some blunt and then read it again. lecture was pointless, managed to get a high A by straight up memorizing the entire book.. both volumes of it.
Oh god she's goes too fast. Dont bother going to lecture at all basically memorize the book cause her exams are straight from the book and they're really detailed know the book inside out. She does have a cook births accent she teaches the plant part of bio 101 on busch her exams are extremely hard don't recommend this professor at all.
her lectures put me to sleep
She is very nice and really wants students to understand the material. However...her lectures are a bit boring but she shows very cool videos related to the material that help a lot. Basically she is very nice and extremely helpful but the text book will be your bible!
horrible horrible horrible. she goes so fast. each slide is covered with writing and is almost impossible to take all of the notes by hand. you have to type them. i recommend not even going to lecture and just reading the book bc her notes come straight from the book and exam questions come straight from the book.
She's by far the best bio lecturer at Rutgers for Gen Bio! She super friendly and approachable and will give great individual attention if you schedule it. shes friendly and makes the most boring part of bio bearable (plant, fungi protists ugh). She does go fast but will stay on the slide or go back if you request for as long as is needed and will
I thought she was a fair lecturer, but she was amazing at her review session. She went over everything that she was going to place on the exam and answered all questions asked. Her exams are an easy B provided you read the book. Strictly speaking, going to lecture isn't necessary to get a good grade on the exam.
If you're usually an A student in biology, she's great to have.Otherwise be careful taking her.She covers everything in great detail and expects you to know it all which can be difficult. But, she is extremely nice and helpful to students, especially during office hours.Just the exams are tough because of the depth of material but she's a nice lady.
She's such a sweetheart. You almost feel bad asking her for help. In my section, she taught the evolution/plant stuff, which are the annoying sections regardless who's teaching. I could not focus in lecture because material was so confusing. Use the text and her lecture notes. Exams are significantly easier and more straight-forward than Martin's.
AVOID AT ALL, NEED I REPEAT ALL COSTS!!! I attended every lecture, sat in the front and still only managed to qet a B on the exam. She is completely book based so if you like reading 200+ pages of bioloqy for fun then you might enjoy her. I definitely recommend taking lectures with Harry Janes and Doreen Glodowski. I got an A on both of their exams
All the people that are saying negative things about this poor women. SHe is soo HELPFUL and NICE if you go talk to her. Biology is a hard subject at Rutgers and its not about how she teaches it, its about how much time your willing to put into it to study. She is so enthusiastic about helping students and is very empathetic. I recommend her!
She is an awesome teacher. She has an outline of her slides on sakai so tht u can print them out & write all important/missing stuff.if u read the book & understand the concepts, then u should be fine for the exam. she always incorporates videos in her ppt, 2 make it intresting/easier. just go to class, understand the chapter & ask 4help if needed.
Just because she is nice doesn't make her a good professor. She's so hard to understand, breaks up her sentences with "um" ten times, and you want to fall asleep. The material is too in depth, and her exams are really hard, even if you study. Unless you memorize the book or spend 2 weeks studying, good luck getting a B on an exam.
If you go to her review, she practically gives you the ecam. I've gotten all A's on her exams. It takes alot of effort, but its gen bio and it is geared towards weeding out pre-meds. She will help you if you want to be helped. Go to her reviews, the last ten minutes will prep you for the exam because she will practically outline the thing for you!
D'Arville is a nice lady but a bad teacher. Going to her lecture is wasting to your time. The only people I know who do well in Gen. Bio are the people who intensely memorize the book almost daily. Her lectures have nothing to do with the exams since Martin makes them so don't go and read the book. I got my A both semesters that way.
Professor D'arville really is the nicest person at Rutgers. She is a good lecturer, but more importantly she is extremely nice and helpful outside of class. Bio is a lot of material and the course at Rutgers is tough, but she makes it fun and enjoyable. I can't recommend her highly enough!
Worst-Worst professor. Avoid her if you can. She likes to waist time talking about anything but Bio. Office hours a waist too.
Firstly her test are too specific from the book its just a waste attending lecture...she basically goes over the slides. AVOID!!! she is a bit helpful outside of class but in class majority of her work is going out of the subject area...if you take her as a lecturer its best to just skip her and go study the book
She's very nice and loves the topics that she covers in class, BUT, anything she talks about is written exactly in the book. DO NOT ATTEND LECTURE, JUST READ. That's what I do. So far I have a B or B+ WITHOUT the bonus points of the curve.
Rutgers gen bio is too hard. It's not necessary. I doubt law accept it. There is a strong likelihood of failure.
Shes a nice lady, i rec. attending her office hrs they are helpful, but she needs to teach better she goes off topic very very often!
nice lady with a British tone, needs to learn to make her exams less confusing and focus on subject area in class
But She needs to make Bio more interesting, it becomes sooo bored!
She's nice and provides much info, if you question her but the problem is her lectures are dry and wont benefit her students. Also, her reliance on ppt makes her lectures dry and makes the students less engaged. My suggestion is study urself you'll benefit much out of that! Her tests are ok i wont say they are that easy tbh
She's a nice lady. I love the fact she cares of her students and gives him practice questions to ponder for the exam. Her problem is the ppt she teaches are ok...and she wards off too much from the subject area. Her exams may be a bit tricky as well so gl. If i had to retake BIo again i would recommend taking at Busch the lecturer are awesome!!!!!!
If you can get past the british accent, good luck not falling asleep when she spends 30 minutes per slide when at most 5 minutes is needed. Then she expects you to know everything she didnt cover because her lecture was about nothing but 3 slides. Acts like she helps but her tests are hard as hell. Still pulled an A
She's not the greatest lecturer but if you are attentive and study the notes you'll be fine. and if theres something that you don't understand just read the section of the textbook that corresponds to it. That's what i did and i got an 84, 80, and 72 on the exams, and i got an A for the semester. but make sure you do well in lab too, its important.
d'Arville is nice but sloppy. Her powerpoints are extremely cluttered and she will ramble on about things not on the slide that's up, constantly getting sidetracked. It's impossible to split your attention between both, and thus hard to fully understand either. Bio is extremely difficult and she doesn't help.
The good thing about this professor is her general interest in the material. However, she spends too much time rambling about irrelevant topics, then reads straight off the powerpoint slides (not good slides), then speeds through important slides. Make sure you read your textbook because her tests include such material, despite what she says.
She knows A LOT about biology. Her notes have a little "too much" material. It's hard to keep focus because she will TALK on and on and usually end up on a totally irrelevant subject. She know's her stuff, but her methods are not my favorite. I didn't like how she'd run out of time from her endless chatter and then speed up at the end of class...
Great, good teacher, notes are informative and the curve is huge
The bio department at rutgers works to screw you over. The class is reallllly hard regardless of who you have. Getting a C is easy but anything else you have to work for, and work hard. Good luck getting an A its damn near impossible
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Way too hard for an introductory level course. Definitely take it with another teacher. Shes a great professor but unless you want to study cancer every second of your day, dont take it.
Class material is ok but do not even think of getting a good grade with her as she sticks with her grading scheme even there is 50% of people get C+ or below and still no curve applies. (median for this year is 75.25 and this is just a C+)
Pretty difficult class. Not a good lecturer. Still pulled out a B+.
Seriously, if you have this professor, its either because you are on douglass and you have no choice or you just have her. Make sure you read all the textbook notes like ALL of it. Her exams are literally the textbook. so memorize the textbook. her slides are basically her notes at the end when she posts "notes" for the exams
ITC is not an intro class. You will be bombarded with information to memorize. If you are a rote memorizer this is the class for you.
God bless your soul if you're stuck with her. She's such a nice lady, but she might as well just stand in front of the whole class and stare at us and teach us telepathically, cus that's about how much I've learned from her. Really, really, really boring, hard to focus, but she gives you material to work with at home. You have to teach yourself.
She's probably one of the best professors I've had. You need to know your material for bio and cancer cause she goes in depth but that's the great thing. I don't think anyone in Rutgers is as qualified to teach the cancer course as she is. She isn't the easiest teacher but if you have a genuine interest in the course she's the best person to have.
nice lady but her lectures are pointless.. she posts diagrams from the book and reads the captions. not the best lecturer
Intro to cancer is def not a 200 level class. The class does require some time but the professor is very helpful and will do her best to explain anything that is unclear through emails and office hours. Interesting class take it!
Not the easiest.. getting a B is fairly easy, getting an A requires you to actually pay attention in class (very difficult) and memorize the slides. Don't even bother getting the "recommended" textbook. Overall she is helpful and accommodating, but very easy to zone out in class
Made lectures difficult to be in due to explanations and teaching methods that were not easily understood.
Overall not a bad teacher. She can sometimes go off on tangents, but her presentations cover basically only the most important concepts. I know other teachers bog down their lectures with a lot of extra information, she just gives you the really important stuff. Just pay attention and take notes.
Thank God for Wikipedia. She is super nice and very qualified. Terrible professor. Her lectures are extremely disjointed; no cohesion; no organization. You really must teach yourself. But she gives you many opportunities to score well with all the quizzes/case studies/exams. No one grade will make or break you.But you have to be in class.
The lectures themselves are less about presenting facts and more about understanding processes - she's big on flow charts and diagrams, less enamored with bullet points. She gives essential exam reviews. I actually did better in her section than the other - supplement with a very brief skimming of the bold stuff in the textbook and you'll do great.
She's a great person, but don't be fooled by that. Her exams were hard, had to know basically everything on her slides, and I took it over the summer with Fund. of Neuro with Uzwiak (did better in his class). Try and take it with another professor if you can. Even though she's a really nice person, your grades will suffer unnecessarily.
got an A in this class and never showed up to class and purely read the book. she means well but her exam reviews aren't useful. she wants the majority of the class to do well and shes very approachable.
Had her as my lecturer for both Bio 101 & 102. She's very sweet and wants everyone to do well, but she just can't explain things clearly. She'll also get into what she's saying and get carried away talking about unrelated things. The only way to really do good is to read and master the material from the book.
RU bio is the worst dept at RU they want you to fail. Both lecturers have PP presentations online and redact large portions of info (just to mess with you). Read the textbook. I got an A just reading. Prof. d'Arville is a sweet lady but she goes way to slow in lecture and will put you to sleep faster than lunesta. ZZZzzz Read the book!!
This is one of my hardest classes this semester even though the material isn't even that complicated. D'arville makes everything 10x harder and confusing than it is. You don't really need to go to class to get the material so long as you sit with wiki and clarify her powerpoints. Not that difficult of a class. Tests are half mc and half T/F.
By far my favorite science class that i've taken at rutgers! Dr. d'arville explains everything clearly and everything you need to know is online. A lot of memorizing is required, but if you are interested in the subject, it's not bad at all! Got a B+.
Highly recommend this class! Dr d'Arville is so great and I learned so much! I wasn't so interested in cancer before this class but this course really makes it interesting and teaches you a LOT. and if you study you'll do fine on the exams
Interesting class, but a LOT of information. D'Arville doesn't do a great job speaking well or clearly at all. Class is mandatory only for the extra info not on the powerpoints, but lectures are VERY hard to follow (minimal structure. she just seems to be rambling on most of the time). Lots of self studying required. Nice, but a very poor lecturer
Professor D'arville is generally a really good and informative professor. She is also extremely helpful and considerate. To get an A, just memorize the lecture slides like a madman after lecture and when the final comes, just review and you'll be ready. Has case studies for which notes are given in class on which the quiz will be based on.
She was friendly and adorable. But her lectures did absolutely nothing for me. I could barely understand her, slightly because of her british accent, but mostly because she liked to ramble on about useless stuff. I couldn't learn through her, I had to read the entire book.
Although a seemingly nice person, she is a terrible lecturer. Extremely boring and barely willing to help even in office hours, I don't recommend her or this class to anyone.
Dr. D'Arville ranged anywhere from a great professor to a completely unfocused rambler from class to class. Some classes she would tell us exactly what we needed to know in an effective manner. Other times she would go on for 10 minutes about nothing and you'd get lost in the word flood. Her review sessions were helpful because she rambled less.
Such a pleasant woman! This class was pretty difficult because of all the information but she had almost everything you needed to study accessible through sakai. I did not prepare for the exams or attend class as much as a should have but still managed to pull of a B.
Lectures are boring, unhelpful and relatively confusing. I would skip lecture read the textbook and go to workshop
Shes a sweet lady and shows enthusiasm for what she teaches. The only problem is sometimes she goes above and beyond the material we need to learn and talks about her own stories so her sections are usually a bit behind. But she is extremely helpful and kind if you approach her. If you copy her notes and skim the textbooks the class is a breeze.
Wonderful lady, terrible lecturer. She tends to go on multiple endless tangents. A lot of material to memorize. Lectures can be very boring. Total of 10 case study quizzes. Attending lectures are only necessary for case study info days otherwise this class is entirely self taught. Memorize all her ppts. Highly unrecommended professor.
SHE NEEDS TO SLOW DOWN
Dr. D'Arville isn't a bad lecturer of professor, but I do recommend making your own notes and highlighting everything she covers. You actually understand what she's talking about because you've read it before. Not to mention you won't be rushing like your fellow classmates. This is what I started doing this semester for Bio 2.
Awful professor. She is like lunesta in a person. She is so boring and expects her students to already have a background on biology. She'll go on crazy tangents about upper level bio in an intro class. She made bio so boring. It's an awful class, but the curve was generous.
She means well but is dry and confusing in her delivery. Slides are well organized. It felt like she was just reading them to us though. Helpful during questions and office hours, she knows her stuff. Outline the "skim" sections thoroughly, then check off what was talked about during class and you'll be good for the exams. Book is awesome.
Amazingly kind woman and wonderful professor. She provides incredible resources and gives fantastic lectures. Very exciting and interesting course. BUT, you must prepare for each exam. You need to be diligent, but not excessively so. Put in the time, look up words you don't understand, & GO TO/take notes in class. It will be smooth sailing.
Professor d'Arville is extremely helpful and a very good teacher. If any of the information is unclear, she will take the time to explain it to you so that you do not have any doubts going into an exam. She definitely takes the time out of her schedule to help any students if they need it. She is very nice and patient when it comes to the course.
Wonderful professor! Her class was extremely interesting, and lectures were quite engaging. She is very knowledgable in this field, and its a great interactive course! Exams are not difficult, just read her power points & memorize.
Professor d'Arville is very nice and down to earth. The class is pretty interesting and if you actually have questions she will help you out. Exams based a lot of lecture notes which she gives out and she makes study guides along with practice sample tests w/ answers. Honestly such a cool professor too if you are interested in the material.
She is a very cute, sweet lady, but her British accent makes it difficult to understand sometimes. She had a lot of information to give, but sometimes they were really not relevant. Overall, didn't enjoy her as a lecturer, but I've heard that her office hours are very helpful. Oh and her study reviews are a must-go.
Professor Darville is such a nice lady, but she's horrendous when it comes to teaching. She will take too long on a slide then when she realizes she has no time, she moves so quickly. Her review sessions are kinda helpful. The tests are too hard, almost impossible. You have to read the whole textbook, because the notes don't do help at all.
She's really a nice woman, but the lectures are PACKED with specific detail that you need to know for the exams, and BORING! There's so much information to remember for each exam, the class is like Bio on steroids. You also have to go to class for case studies that add up to 100600 points of your grade. She's a sweet lady but the class is HARD.
Pay attention, and it's not bad. But it's awfully easy to fall asleep in the warm and dim ARC 105. And when you lose her once, you lose her for the rest of the lecture, since all the information leads to another. If you're awake enough to write down all the notes though, it's fairly easy to teach yourself before an exam.
Lectures are packed with information; either spend time listening trying to understand or just typewrite notes and learn material on your own at a later date. Professor D'Arville is a very nice lady, but sometimes the end of lecture is rushed because she runs out of time. Definitely attend review sessions to try to pass the difficult exams!
Memorizing the slides will get you a B, memorizing & understanding will probably get you an A. GO TO CLASS! Some slides aren't included in the pdf she puts on Sakai & there are exam questions from them. In class open-ended case study quizzes, info is given during the previous lecture. Exams are very specific, all multiple choice. Not an easy A.
Whoever says that Dr D'Arville's lectures are boring is either not interested in the subject or has no idea what the professor is talking about due to lack of reading and studying. Dr D'Arville makes the lectures very interesting by presenting case studies which have real life applications. She explains concepts very well & is extremely helpful.
She puts way to much information into her lectures and basically reads the textbook at you plus more information you'll never need. I stopped going to class after the first exam and actually did much better using just the textbook and youtube over her notes.
Dr D'Arville presents the material in a very unique way by incorporating medical case studies in her lectures to highlight certain pathologies. In addition, she is extremely helpful & goes the extra mile for anybody who is interested in learning. It's a high quality course & gives a deeper understanding of human endocrinology. Grade must be earned!
Bio, Society, and BioMed Issues is supposed to be a class for non-science majors, however, d'Arville takes this class waaaaayy too seriously and gives the students useless information. Her lectures are long and boring, I would suggest reading the textbook yourself because you get better info from there than her. Don't take this class, save yourself
She's honestly great. Make a study group, that's what I did! Tests were a bit tricky. Open ended is hard, but she's lenient. Case Studies were fun and informative, clinical assessment at the end was long, almost ran out of time! Take her if you have a good fundamental understanding of cell biology. (especially if you took CBN 270 and 245).
She's not exactly the best lecturer, she generally reads off the slides. But she's a nice person to talk to, and helpful if you go to her office hours and ask questions. You can definitely tell she is passionate about the topic of cancerExams are a little tricky, especially with T/F questions with how specific the wording is.
D'Arville is a very nice person to talk to and explains so well in office hours. Lectures can get long though. I wouldn't say Intro to Cancer is an easy A. She makes you work for the A. Exams are tough because of true/false qs. One word makes "a big difference." You have to know every detail from the lecture notes for exams. Don't need the book.
Class isn't too difficult if you memorize the notes. However, she can put you to sleep in lecture and goes off in tangents.
Dr. D'Arville is a very kind and inspirational professor. Although I did well in the class without really paying solid attention in lecture, I definitely regret not talking to her more -- she has some very inspirational and interesting stories to tell about why she ended up in the cancer field. Class overall isn't too difficult.
Professor D'Arville is really sweet. She teaches by PP and will ramble sometimes but for the exams you'll just wind up memorizing the slides- so taking notes isn't necessary. Ask questions when you have them, study for case studies, and memorize PP's using her exam outlines as a guide. Do this and you'll get an A. Super interesting material, too!
her class is usually long and she basically read of the power point and wont answer your questions and rather ignore you. she doesn't email back and she gives out no curves whats so ever.
Prof is clearly knowledgable about the material, but lectures can be boring and drag on. Mostly reads off PP slides. Case studies are interesting, make sure to study beforehand for them because they are a grade booster if you do well. Exams are tricky. All MC/TF. TF very specific, the matter of one word difference can lead you to the wrong answer.
Awful. She has no idea how to get her message across. She'll be talking for hours, while not really saying anything. She also has absolutely no concept of time: class runs at least 15 min late every time, and gets mad when people try to leave. She's always behind on her syllabus, and then rushes through like 3 lecture notes in one lecture period.
Arguably the worst lecturer I've encountered at Rutgers, and that includes those who have a tenous grasp of the English language. Her lecture style is utterly pedantic; she'll talk about a specific slide for 10 + minutes, and not add anything meaningful to what is written on the slide. Class isn't difficult, but man, she does NOT know how to teach.
She is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY HORRENDOUS. Please do yourself a favor and find a different class or professor. You dont need this kind of negativity in your life. She doesnt curve, she does not even talk about the average of the class. Her lectures drag on till there is no more will power in you to stay up. her power points arent even the same.
First of all, DO NOT TAKE INTRO TO CANCER. IT IS NOT A 200 LEVEL ELECTIVE AT ALL. if you have not taken genetics, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. D'Arville is absolutely brutal, goes over 15 minutes every class, and is the typical rude Brit. She understands everyone struggles but does nothing to change the material, and she's a horrible lecturer.
One time, class was OVER and she said "would anyone mind if I showed a few videos now?" people started to leave, and she took attendance AFTER people left BECAUSE CLASS WAS OVER!! this is what you will go through if you take D'arville, she thinks her class is the most important thing in your life. this class is horrible and such a mistake to take.
As I write this, Dr. D'arville has yet to make clear what will be included on the final assessment of Integrative Endocrinology (there are two days until I take it). She's one of the worst professors I've had at Rutgers, certainly the most disorganized. She's nice, but she rambles, and discusses things that are completely unrelated to lecture.
Although the prof tends to ramble on about the topic, I found her to be very fair in her exams and grading. As long as you show up to lecture and pay attention you should be guaranteed a B. I had her for intro to cancer and I like the way she also incorporated case studies with the topic. Made the topics make more sense. Overall a great prof.
