Dr. Day is a professor that will not make you learn anything about her subject. Her classes are interesting but if you start thinking about what you have learned in the quarter, you might say you have not learned anything at all. Her tests are really easy if you payed attention to classes and if you read the lectures.
Loved her!! Her accent was super interesting and actually made me want to pay attention. You have to get one book (Enrique's Journey-easy read) and you do have to read some other stuff online but most of it's really interesting and opens your eyes up to the real world. She offers so much help and is always there when you need to know something.
I loved her! You only need to get one book which is easy to read and then read some other stuff online, but most of it is really interesting stuff. She's there when you need to ask any questions. She's almost too helpful. Her accent was awesome and actually made me want to listen. I wish I could take her again for another class I need... lol
The real downside is that her grading was erratic. Her speech criteria often differed between what she put on the rubric and what she actually ended up grading you on. She'd find ways to take off points even when you did meet the criteria, suddenly getting specific on how you worded something or how you stood, and you'd lose five points instantly
Dr. Day helped me become confident as a public speaker. I came in dreading the class but I actually learned a lot. We discussed ethics and persuasion in the media and it was very eye opening. There are 4 speeches total, however her midterm and final exams are short but tend to be a little difficult.
Dr. Day is a new teacher. She just started Fall of 2014. Originally from New Zealand. Here's the thing, she's super sweet, but very passive aggressive. I don't think her topic of "Ethics in the Corporate World" was very appropriate for the course, and our speeches were very boring. The class is perfect for feminists honestly.
I was excited for public speaking before going into this class. I thought that my speeches and assignments were much better than the way I was graded. My grade in this class should be better than it actually is. If you have a strong work ethic, and get along well with fairly passive professors, you'll do fine.
Dr. Day was extremely passive aggressive and had very biased opinions. The thing I found frustrating was that we could "express our opinion" but she would pass over it if she didn't exactly agree. We talked a lot about topics that should not have been in the Speech course. Felt like I was taking a political science class instead.
I was really excited about this class particularly Dr. Day. Yet as time went on, my grades continually fell despite doing all the work well. Her grading is not consistent which likely stems from her taking rough notes during your speeches and basing grades of of those later. I feel more frustrated with public speaking than confident now.
I really loved the public speaking teacher I had in high school so I was excited for this class but I quickly started to dislike her class. She can be a nice person but she gives conflicting feedback and isn't very clear with speech topics. She is a great public speaker herself but she assumes people already knows things and then grades against it
This class can be tough. You'll REALLY need to put effort in it. Willing to learn and you'll improve. To get great score on one speech you need to practice A LOT. Don't just stand there and read your paper. Topic can be unclear but if you email her, she'll respond quite quickly. Can be passive aggressive but she's a human like us. It's normal.
She seems to be tough but she is a great teacher, she really does try to help you improve at public speaking. Her topics are interesting and the class discussions are great. I loved this class, definitely do the readings for the tests, without reading you won't pass the tests.
It was really hard for me to understand what exactly she wanted. Instead of her discussing topics students had 2 blog about the topic. It was my 1st online class but her deadline outline was hard to understand (do day 4 of week 3) Harsh grader, she demanded atleast 3 replies per topic and then give u a B or a C without telling u what u did wrong
She can seem full of herself at first, but she's super nice and funny too. She grades tough, but put effort into your speeches and do all the assignments and you'll be fine. If you mess up, she always offers really simple extra cred. I learned more in this class than just speaking, and I would totally go back and do it all over again.
This professor was by and large the worst instructor I've ever had in my life. I got a C in her class -- I've never made below a B in any class of my college career -- because I got a collection of Ds and Fs on discussion boards. When I asked for help, I got some vague answer and when I made corrections I still made horrific grades.
Absolutely under no circumstance should you take this teacher. I have never had a teacher who is so stubborn and unwilling to cooperate with me in my life. She offhandedly called my fellow classmate a B student, and has talked down to me on several occasions. I do not feel like I am respected here. I am a good A student and I dislike her.
Good prof all around, I think she gets a bad rap. The subject of the class is money so if you don't like to learn about how to manage it, steer clear. Has good advice and tips but can be a little harsh sometimes. the longest speech you'll have to do is 7 minutes and the atmosphere is not intimidating. good for a required course.
She's a really tough grader and Isn't 100% clear about what she wants from you. She's doesnt accept late work, and if you miss a class on the day of the quiz, she'll fail you for that class. This might be the only class that will teach you about personal finance at SCAD, but that's all you might learn from the course. over all a very boring class.
She was really hard to talk to especially around the second and third project. Gives confusing feedback that I tried to talk to her about. Not clear with what she wants. If you read an essay that's what she wants from my understanding. She's anal about what she wants and doesn't tell you what you could've worked on.
At first, I thought she was really sweet. Come Week 5 and she really changed up. She is a very harsh grader and expects a lot from us. However, it is a speech class and we don't practice in class. Her criticisms are anything but constructive and she's not afraid to comment rudely, in front of the class, directly or indirectly about you.
I think she gets a bad rep. Shes very sweet and down to earth and genuinely cares. She might be a little rough around the edges but really all you have to do is show her you care about her class and are willing to put in the effort. She will call you out for your BS, so dont half ass things cause she's smart will call you out when you deserve it
Professor Day is the most fickle professor I've had while at SCAD. The class content is great, but there is little teaching involved. Her personality changed half way through the course. She was all over the board with her grading. If you have a problem at any point in the course, she will point out your flaws and make you feel like the problem.
I do not know why all of her reviews are so nasty. She's a really nice woman, very supportive. She clearly states what your weaknesses are so you can work on them and grades fairly liberally. And the quizzes are open note.
Dr. Day seemed relatively nice at first, maybe even fun, but suddenly she switches halfway through the quarter into this unreasonable tough-grader who makes you feel horrible about yourself. The ONE time I asked for help, it was on a speech idea, and she gave me a disgusted face, told me the idea wasn't good, and walked away.
Dr. Day is great. Easy class, even if you aren't the best at public speaking. She never makes students feel bad about themselves, even when they're anxious about speaking. She gives plenty of constructive, helpful feedback. Very little homework, open-note tests, and straight-forward speeches. I've never spent more than 1 hour a week on homework.
Dr. Day gives a lot of grading opportunities as well as extra credit. While she will assign homework it's normally posting on a discussion board and read cliff notes. While there are quizzes they are completely based off the cliff notes so if you read them an A is definitely possible. She's also very considerate of student who have anxiety.
She's very focused on building community in the classroom and it really helps get you more comfortable for speeches. She gives good feedback and usually keeps thing interesting. She can be kind of a hard grader but if you follow the requirements and try your best she'll usually not go too hard on.
Prof Day is the worst teacher I've had at SCAD. She seems chill at the beginning of the quarter, but she completely flips about halfway through and fails students without any basis from the rubric. She can be very demeaning, often in front of the whole class. She gave an absence to a student who stepped outside to take his medication and came back.
I was nervous about taking this class but I honestly think Dr. Day is a pretty good professor. While making speeches about money the whole quarter wasn't the most interesting topic I definitely learned a lot. She's very considerate towards students with anxiety. Gives good feedback and gives so many opportunities to make friends in the class.
This class was pretty all over the place in terms of grading and directions so if you're easily confused I highly caution you on taking this class although Ms. Day will answer questions promptly. If you don't care about this class requirement and are already confident in your public speaking skills and are fine with a C then this is your class
Overall, Dr. Day I don't think was the prof. for me. She gives you some hard honest feedback about speaking that might sting - make sure you have some THICK skin because she is picky. I can tell she wants her students leave with a good understanding. I just personally wouldn't want to recommend her. If you get stuck with her - good luck.
Material is cool, but she is not!! The first 5 weeks class is laid back and fun, but almost immediately after week 5 she does a complete personality and course change. If youre ok with a C and possibly being embarrassed/shamed in front of the class then this class is for you. If given the chance again I would not have taken her course.
She was the hardest professor I've ever taken. The class topic was not enticing and she grades very harshly. I found it hard to deliver what she expected and she didn't exactly tell me how to improve. I would not take her again if my life depended on it.
Shes nice at first, then she gets worse and worse.
As of now, Dr. Day is the worst professor I've ever had at SCAD. She flunks students on speeches with little to no basis from the rubric, and is unnecessarily rude and demeaning towards her students. She's made the most confident students cry due to her "feedback." Ironically enough, she's also a horrible communicator. Take literally anyone else.
She is a nice professor and gives several in-class breaks. She is also very understanding. However, you will have to try in this class to get the grade you want. I also didn't enjoy the topic of this communication class: money. I learned about finances, but it was almost as depressing as it was boring.
Day is fantastic. After nearly 7 hours of class time prior to even coming into class, I would look forward to 2.5 hours of lecture. She's funny, charismatic, and orchestrates the classroom in an intellectually stimulating manner.
Awesome teacher. Tends to be a little lecture heavy. Really forces you to get to know your classmates. Great class for someone who has anxiety for meeting new people as well as public speaking. She really helps you out with helpful pointers for the anxious. Totally would take her again also she has a cat Instagram.
Strict and tough grader but explains why she gives us the grade we deserve. Funny when she gives examples and analogies about a topic. Very inspirational and gives good advice on speaking up.
Professor Day s course was very well designed. Step-by-step tutorials helps one understand the fundamentals of public speaking; and provides an affirming environment within to practice the skills she teaches. My understanding of this valuable tool has been greatly enhanced.
I had her for freshman year and she was so amazing. There aren't that many speeches you have to give, which helps you make each one really good. It's not a stressful class at all.
Although this was one of the hardest classes I have taken at SCAD so far, Professor Day is very specific with her expectations & gives clear instructions for every speech. If you want to get out of your comfort zone & learn everything about public speaking you should take this class, but if you are looking for an easy grade I'd recommend you no to.
I wish I could give Prof. Day a 5 but I can't. I loved her as a teacher and a person. She's funny and charismatic. I found the class material to be interesting. However I wouldn't take her class again because of the huge downside. She's an extremely tough grade and is extremely particular. There is few assignments so one bad grade will ruin you.
I don't think I could ever bear taking this professor again. She's very passive aggressive, claims to be lenient when she's the toughest grader I've ever had, and doesn't strive to help you improve speaking whatsoever. She's made even the class's best speakers feel incompetent. Do NOT take this woman.
Even though I did well in her class, I did not enjoy it at all. She starts off the quarter as a very understanding person, but halfway through the quarter she grades your first speech brutally. Feedback is not at all constructive with comments like, "Try to be more confident." She is not a good communicator and doesn't follow her own rules/advice.
She asked us all to give her a good RMP on the 1st day, and I think that says enough. She teaches a speech class, one that we are all REQUIRED to take, and seems to have no sympathy that some people are not going to be passionate enough to jump at the chance to do improv in front of the class, or ask profound questions every day. This is a no go.
DO NOT TAKE HER. I'm a straight A student and this is my only B, it was almost a C. She purposefully lowered my grades that were already posted because I told her I was worried about it. Hand everything in on time or she'll give you a 0. She is a very strict grader. Hated this class so much, and I don't even mind public speaking. Topic of finance
Day isnt the BEST teacher you could have for COMM at SCAD but shes definitely not the worst either. Her grading is a little strict but she makes it really comfortable to speak and does prepare you for the speeches. Theres barely any work, only 3 in person speeches and 1 recorded speech. She offers a LOT of extra credit so just do that and your good
Worst class ever. You would receive good comments on your speech only to find that your grade is a 60 or below. Do not recommend this class. If you're okay with potentially having a D or a C then go for it. The topic of the class is money. She's a nice person tho, its just the class is really bad and the grading criteria is awful
She is very nice but can be very passive aggressive. She makes an effort to make the class feel comfortable speaking in front of each other. I found some criteria unclear until after receiving the feedback. She uses blackboard a lot which is helpful. I didn't enjoy the subjects of the speeches we had to do but I understand that they will benefit me
Y'all are so mean to Day but she really isn't that bad. She tries really hard to help people with anxiety and she's a good person. Sometimes her grading can be iffy but if you literally just ask her about it she'll tell you why she did what she did. Also, if you're in this class, take advantage of extra credit, it's real easy/
as the quarter goes on she grades harsher without giving specific reasons as to where she took points off. The peer evaluations are ridiculous because you get graded on if you agree with the same things she does. She does give extra credit but I feel it doesn't do anything.
Professor Day has made public speaking an easier experience for me! The class isn't too difficult but you do have to make sure you turn in all of your work on time. If you are serious about this class and you want to improve she will give you great feedback. She will even add up your grade to make sure youre on the right track. Great class!
I won't say shes horrible but she wasn't my favorite. She was fine until about halfway through the class and then suddenly she became harsh. Her feedback is vague and it becomes harder and harder to tell what she wants from you.
Forced to take this class /the best thing that happed this Q. Shes serious & reasonable. It was 1/2down to business & 1/2games that forced awkwardness out of speech class. I literally made more long lasting friendships in this class than orientation. Shes tough about being late but ultra clear about the hw & almost no weekend hw 1/2 half of Q!
So far I have had Prof. Day for a couple of weeks but I noticed that many ratings say she is a tough grader later in her class. As it stands, she is creative with how she explains Do's and Don'ts when speaking publicly and her explanations are relatable and hilarious. I will update this rating after the quarter if my experience changes.
I loved Dr. Day. She was very straight forward about what she expected from students, especially in such a nerve-racking class like public speaking. You won't do well if you miss class, because everything she teaches applies towards your tests. She gives a variety of different assignment types to make you more comfortable speaking. She's incredible
Probably my least favorite professor I've had at SCAD. When asking questions she gives rather vague answers. I wore the same thing for two speech days and she gave me full credit for my attire on one, and marked me down on another. Grading criteria doesn't make sense and is incredibly harsh. I regret taking her.
She's an okay professor. She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Her grading criteria were always laid out clearly, but she always varied greatly when actually grading. She can be really picky about minuscule things. Overall not the worst, the class was fine for a public speaking class.
I loved this class. Super engaging for an 8 am, and always woke me up. She's very clear about her grading, and gives you plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Only issue I ever had with her was knocking one of my smaller grades to a C without giving us a clear outline on peer review just because she disagreed. Overall, she's great though.
She is respected in her field, but if you miss a single assignment it will ruin your grade and its hard to get it back up. Shes a really tough grader and a bit harsh when it comes to feed back. There are a lot of speeches that you have to do and the topics werent interesting. If you have anxiety Days class will be very difficult.
Look if you're nervous about speech and want an easy professor to walk you through it, she's a great choice, she doesn't grade harshly, and she's nice enough. I wish speech topics were better, and I wish she would've helped the better speakers in the class to improve more.
At first it seemed like this was gonna be an easy online speech class but as the term went on she graded harder and didnt give a clear reason why. For example, on one discussion board I would get a 100 and then the next time I would get an 80 when I did the exact same thing. She is also very strict of APA style when doing bibliography.
By the end, Dr. Day was giving us quizzes where the answers were solely based on her opinions and giving us bad grades with no proper explanation. The class argued with her a lot, and she also wouldn't answer your questions in class (expecting you to ONLY ask her things during her office hours)
No exceptions for late work. Don't miss class, you'll be called out. She only talks about her cats. Understanding about anxiety until midterms. If you're not perfect after that, prepare to get an F. Your physical presentation matters more than your actual speech. Wing it bc she hates when you just read a speech. EYE CONTACT OR YOU GET AN F. AVOID!!
Easy grader at first, but after midterms she grades harshly. Her tests are difficult because of poorly written trick questions that dont accurately assess ones understanding of the relatively minimal and simple material. No exceptions for late work. Vindictive about absences. She will set a timer to see if youre a second over 15min late.
Super nice professor. She's very cleare about what's expected of you and provides a rubric for every speech. Super lenient about time limits and gives multiple warnings once you've gone over. A few online in-class quizzes, but they're all open notes. As long as you show up for class and participate you should pass.
I took Professor Day, over the summer 2019 but then I withdrew because of personal reasons, Then when Fall 2019 quarter came I signed back up for her class I love her so much shes a amazing and so funny. She talks about her cats a lot, she has a great heart, but dont try to pull a fast one on her because she is with it. YOU DONT WANT SMOKE....
She's a good professor and really encouraged us to not be too nervous about public speaking. However, she seemed kind of cold. I felt uncomfortable around her which I feel bad about because everyone liked her; I worked hard in the class, too, so it wasn't like I was failing or anything. I do admire her love for cats, however.
I was afraid of public speaking until I took Professor Days class! She created such a strong community in the class and was easily my favorite professor of the quarter. Shes comical and caring and gives feedback in no time!
I was at a very high A and then dropped a whole letter grade after midterms. She gave me an F on my participation even though I was trying very hard. She just didn't see me because I was in the back. She also suddenly started to grade way tougher. No one was making As anymore. She disregarded my anxiety and took away my coping mechanisms.
Dr. Day is nice lady who knows her stuff. If you actually TRY, you will do good in that class. The workload isn't that much, but you should practice your speech because it really helps and if you go to her to tell her your problems, she will understand, but she might come off as passive-aggressive, but that's just her personality. Overall, great.
Dr. Day grades so bluntly and harshly that it can actually be hurtful to read her feedback at times. She takes little care for those who have genuine anxiety problems and will often take off 20+ points from final speech grades with reckless abandon. Her feedback and grades come quickly, but you'll wish they didn't. She's also a bit pretentious...
COMM 105 is not a pre-requisite to anything so just wait till junior or senior year when you can take the good Professor. If you want to pass make sure you do every speech draft all 100 of them and site all your facts! Even if it sounds fake. IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS. She Will not help if she cant understand you.
She was nice enough when confronted, but she grades ridiculously hard and (my course was online so this may differ) refuses to take late grades. Tanked my grade because i tried to turn in an assignment at 12:02. would NOT take this professor again, hurting my GPA.
Carolyn Day grades harshly and has no idea how to run an online class. She expects you to do things on the assignments without being told. It's pretty annoying because I feel like this elective is going to hurt my GPA
She is a tough grader, which would be okay if she gave you more feedback on how you could improve. Her grading criteria is vague, and you will have to decipher what she wants. She told us that virtual classes were optional, but she was upset with anyone that didn't attend and it showed in our grades. Don't take her if you can help it.
Honestly, I don't know why she has such a low rating. She was really nice, she was understanding of anxiety and stage fright, and her assignments weren't too dificult. I'd say that as long as you keep up with the work, are respectful in class and comunicate if there's an issue, Carolyn Day is an amazing choice. Plus she shows pictures of her cats!
Taking this dreaded course with this professor was a nightmare. She is often harsh and shares too much about her personal life to justify her temper and lack of organization. Her rubrics lack clarity. I didn't learn much about how to give a better speech.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She targeted certain girls in the class that she didnt like and gave us really poor grades with no explanation. Also there isnt enough discussions to keep up participation so you HAVE to openly speak in EVERY class for any participation. If you miss ANY assignment, your grade is doomed. Students beware.
I was unhappy with Dr. Day as a professor. She has NO sympathy for late work, even if it's because you had technical difficulties. As the quarter goes on, she grades a lot tougher. She isn't very empathetic and kind of passive aggressive. Her cats are cute, but this class made me anxious. Although she gives good feedback she never ansers my emails.
Take her class and you will remember her for life. She is an absolute gem and I wish I could take her class again. She is a fantastic professor, an intelligent and caring person. She grades fair and understandably and appreciates participation and effort, the work she requires is reasonable and will positively affect your career and confidence!
Her grading is HARSH, and she wants you to fail. I read every course reading she gave out, on time, and still barely passed the class. She will end class over an hour early. I got very unreasonable grades considering the work I put in. Reaching out is pointless, she has no empathy. No late work but extra credit barely does anything.
I was told she was an amazing teacher when it came to kids with accommodations, she is NOT. She is one of the coldest people I've met who tries to play it off as professionalism. Her rubrics are NEVER provided. Straight A students receive D's in her class FOR NO REASON. Quiz's consist of random stuff she said in class to see if you were watching.
Dr. Day has no care for her students, it doesn't matter what they're going through. She's such a harsh grader and never justifies why she gave you that grade. Also- the extra points opportunity for when you're two points from failing the class are eternal. Do not, I repeat DO NOT take Carolyn Day unless you want your GPA to be at it's lowest.
Tried to make class engaging but at 8 am, most times fell flat. Not too much reading for homework but for a slow reader with attention problems, it was kinda brutal. Grading was pretty rough as well unless you specifically went to Day for specific feedback. Even then, there was a large room for error.
Do not take her. I am an A student and received horrible grades in her class, that should have been an easy A. She makes absolutely no sense and is rude.
Professor Day is spiteful and a complete unprofessional. She will give you bad grades if she disagrees with you politically, or if you ask her any questions that she doesn't want to answer regarding grading or rubrics. She once made a student openly weep and leave class, then had the rest of us watch that student's recorded speech and critique it.
Prof Day is super sweet and I'm so glad I took her for my comm class because she's sweet, understanding, and her expectations are clear and easy to fulfill. Do be careful of due dates because her late work policy is harsh; however, there are no shortage of extra credit opportunities to make up your grade in the event that you do miss a due date.
Professor Day was by far the best Professor Ive had while at SCAD. She really understands what its like to be a student scared of speaking in front of your peers. Shes really fun and offers great help if youre struggling with something.
Professor Day has been the toughest grader yet and had no clear guidelines at all. I've never been so let down by a teacher. Her "feedback" is only good for the first two projects and after that, she'll give you nothing/ bare minimum. Take another professor. This class on top of other fundamental classes? Way too much work and time wasted.
A fun professor who's engaging in class. Assignments can be a little unclear, though, and grading is a bit unpredictable. Quizzes feature obscure parts of long homework readings that were never gone over in class.
This class is lecture heavy for sure. She talks a lot about english and speaking in front of a crowd. The information can be helpful if you pay attention and use the information she gives you but you don't speak about topics you are actually passionate about like art or your major sadly. Her verbal comments also don't reflect the grade she gives u.
I'm not sure why she has so many negative reviews. I know we were her favorite class because we were very active in discussion, and sometimes debates, but I don't see that making a huge difference. She was very engaging, and she utilized all of the advice she gave us during her lectures, so it wasn't just a matter of "do as I say, not as I do."
Dr. Day is a very special person. She cares deeply about making sure students are comfortable. Her class will build your self-confidence and give you the tools you need to be a better speaker. Her grading criteria are clear and very forgiving. She will really work with you. Don't hesitate to take her class.
Probably the best professor ive ever had. She is nice when you do your work, and she interacts with the students very well.
Professor Day is so funny and caring. She really motivated her students to do their best without pressuring them. many of my classmates were on the shyer side and she was always accommodating towards them. She's also a passionate cat lover and activist so it does not get any better than that. Take her class!!
Great professor, no idea why she has such a low rating. Great feedback, lot's of extra credit, & easy assignments. She provides all the reading so you don't need to buy any textbooks. If you're scared of public speaking she lets you record speeches, which I never did but appreciated anyways. Only one group project, & tons of freedom on assignments!
Dr. Day is becoming one of my favorite professors. Her dry humor and focus on personal growth and less on tradition views of public speaking form such a good learning experience and community in the class. Course load isn't bad either, and I'm always excited walking into the class. Don't let other reviews fool you, she's great!
Professor Day does not deserve a low rating at all. She is absolutely incredible. She is kind and caring. She has a great sense of humor. She fosters such a comfortable judge-free environment. She grades very nicely. I want to take her class over and over again.
Friendly & professional. Lectures are essentially watching her edit powerpoints real-time; fine if you can keep track of the changes but it makes the quizzes harder than they should be (she is a big fan of trick questions--be forewarned) and they cover material that is barely covered in the lectures or only briefly mentioned in passing.
Dr. Day is a great professor, who facilitates a very positive and engaging learning environment. As someone who struggles with public speaking, I always felt that she genuinely cared about my improvement in the course. As long as you try in this class, it is extremely hard to fail and this was definitely my favorite class of the quarter.
She overall was so great, I really don't know why her rating is so low. Yes, the quizzes are super hard but besides that it is so easy to pass her class with flying colors. She is also so nice and so fun and always makes sure you get a break, unlike other professors I have had.
Easy grader and I got As all the time throughout the quarter, my only issue was at the end of the quarter there was a weekend I couldn't do work due to medical reasons when I tried to then use my accommodations she ignored them and said that her syllabus rules went against my accommodations. Easy A for some, others not so much...
I genuinely loved Prof Day, I am taking another one of her classes this coming quarter. Truly as long as you try you will pass. Even though she does not tolerate late work, She gives you so much time to complete speeches and prepare. As long as you communicate ask questions and participate. You will be fine. I had a great class!
I took professor Day my freshman year of SCAD as my first class ever. I am now a senior and this is still the ONLY class I have received a C in. I am a straight A student but Day is a very tough grader. In the middle of student presentations, she would call people out. She is very disrespectful and I would not have taken her but I was forced.
She is great. Honestly, as long as you try and submit it on time you should get an A. The only reason I don’t is I forgot to do discussion posts. Our class had a great environment where everyone felt comfortable to present, and it was very fun. I hope I can take her again.
I took Dr. Day my first quarter, and couldn't help that she was an 8am. I know I would have enjoyed her class way more otherwise, but as it were I couldn't keep up and all study material had nothing to do with the quiz questions we were given. Harsh grader- but very sweet and lively. Wish I could've taken her later in the day.
She is a super sweet lady, but was not always clear on her expectations. I received a C on a speech that I was proud of and when I asked why, she struggled to give me a reason. Not horrible for an online public speaking class but was not fantastic.
I loved Prof day. She always gives really informative lectures on public speaking. She really helped shape my techniques for public speaking.
I came into Dr. Day's class very nervous expecting it to be a mess because of her RMP score, but it ended up being a great, but very hard class. She grades harshly, but its for the work itself, if your nervous with public speaking it wont affect your grade as long as at least make an attempt
Carolyn is awesome. She is so funny and her class is SO fun. She lets you play games most days and creates a great classroom community. Follow her instructions and participate and you will do well. Her speeches are not expected to be memorized and she is super understanding. She hardly lectures and makes all graded work easy. LOVE HER!
Grading criteria was not clear, hard grader. Did not give feedback on assignments.
I really enjoyed Dr. Day's class. As long as you follow the rubric and guidelines for speeches, you should get good grades. Quizzes were sometimes challenging. She did a good job at engaging the class, and we did lots of team building games/exercises to get more comfortable with each other to make presenting in class more comfortable.
I LOVE prof Day!! I had her this quarter for Interpersonal Comms 110 and I really enjoyed the class. We learned how to have healthy communication with people in a relationship, at work, and with peers. It was a mix of her lecturing and us having group conversations but she made it entertaining with fun examples of her life or a show. super easy.
Carolyn was a good teacher. Projects (presentations) were fun. The lectures were not repetitive. I would say I furthered my confidence in public speaking and met some great people in the class. The late work penalty is steep and there isn't much wiggle room for late assignments, it was only an issue for one project but definitely hurt my grade.
I came into Professor Day's class really nervous about public speaking but by the end of the quarter felt so much more confident in my public speaking skills. She fosters a supportive and fun learning environment, letting us play icebreakers for the majority of classes. Super sweet woman and a great professor to take if you struggle with anxiety!
Good professor. I found her style of teaching was not my speed and found myself even more nervous to give speeches after her class. While she creates a really friendly environment to ease anxieties I found it not very effective.
This class consisted of two discussion boards, four speeches, a group current events speech, a midterm quiz, a final quiz, and a final reflection paper. The peer evaluation grade is based on attendance and responding to classmates' speeches. Even without prior experience, I felt this class prepared me to succeed in public speaking in the future!
started out fine, but as the quarter progressed & projects got more detailed, her strictness became more of a problem. her lectures have a meandering quality that makes it hard to latch onto what's important, and this also applies to when she talks about project criteria, so its difficult to know exactly what she wants. didnt learn much.
She's nice and isn't judgemental of nervous speakers, but her speech advice kind of makes speeches longer and less interesting, and trips up speakers with all these speech rules. Her advice made me and others more nervous during speeches
in the beginning she seemed easy but after the first speech she becomes way more strict and isn't really clear on what she wants. it was kinda noticeable is she doesn't like you and when trying to talk to her or clarify something she would kind of shrug you off and be feel condescending.
Sometimes I had a hard time reading her tone or tell when she's joking or not. Really understanding about assignments, sometimes unclear about instructions. My entire class got low grades on one of the speeches because she failed to explain an aspect of the grading criteria.
I would not advise taking this class unless you are already very knowledgeable about public speaking. As someone who is not, I've gained nothing from her class and I'm no better at public speaking than I was before. She's very dry, and her lectures are rambly and difficult to retain. Also, your grade is punished for using your absences.
This class started outeasy going but at about half way through the quarter the grading got way harder. For the first 2 speeches everyone got very high grades but by the end a lot of us were struggling. On my final speech I did exactly what was on the rubric and received a 77 with little feedback. I like public speaking but this class wasn't helpful
I strongly would not recommend taking this course with this professor. She is VERY strict within her rubric, yet does not communicate this to the class. I consider myself a good student and I was definitely bending over backwards for each grade. But never received higher than an 80% after the first assignment.
Though her teaching style (and sense of humor) isn't for everyone, I certainly enjoyed her class when I took her this past spring. She can be a nitpicky grader; it's best to practice and prepare for your speeches ahead of time and take her advice. She fostered a wonderful class and community: just be prepared to work hard, and you'll do just fine!
Her class was very enjoyable, and she gave very clear criteria and feedback after each of our speeches. She has been very nice and understanding to students who get nervous, and she helped foster a very safe environment in class. Good professor!
After the first speech, she will grade very harshly and without a clear communication of expectations. You will also lose points for missing four classes. Her speaking style is very dry and rambly. If you miss class, you will have a hard time catching up due to lack of posted material. If possible take this class with another professor.
While she was a harsh grader, as long as you applied everything she said a speech needed and her past feedback you'll be great. She gives out great feedback and is excited to help with anything regarding the projects. She creates a safe space which I think is very important for that class.
Didn't like taking this class with professor day. She was inconsistent in her heading and criteria which was super frustrating. I would never take her class again honestly stay away!!!
seemed chill at the beginning of the semester, called it the "easy class" and said we could even work on outside homework during class, then turned into an extremely harsh grader with unclear assignment briefs. was aggravating that she was unclear about her expectations at the beginning. it's almost impossible to get full points for assignments
Professor Day's class started easy but quickly became challenging. She grades speeches harshly, so be prepared to put in extra work. The material can be dry, but using resources like Unstuckstudy helps. Overall, a tough yet rewarding class if you engage with it.
She started off being very nice but then everything changed just like the other reviews said. If you don't go to class, she isn't understanding and will deduct all of the points if there was an assignment due that class time. Do not take her. I did not learn a single thing and she only talks about her cats.
I did not gain anything from this class. It was constantly anxiety inducing for me. Her grading standards were incredibly unclear and constantly changing. She also often came across as disinterested in the class and would appear passive aggressive. Take someone else if you have the option.
Dr. Day was one of my favorite professors ever because she was very funny, gave us extra long breaks, and really understood anxiety when it came to public speaking. Not too hard of a grader if you are used to harder grading. She fostered a really fun and comfortable learning environment and I wouldn't have picked anyone else. This class was SO FUN!
Overall, Professor Day is not the best option for COMM-105. She's quite rude to her students and kind of gets cocky at points. I didn't get that many bad grades, literally just one, but still I saw others struggle. Overall, didn't really like her as a person.. Just try to follow the rubric as much as possible
She seems super chill at the beginning but after the first speech it becomes almost impossible to get an A. Very high expectations and standards that are not conveyed in class so check rubric THOROUGHLY Pick group speech members wisely she does not budge on group grades. Look at her A LOT and specific students A LOT to get points for eye contact.
One of the best professors I have had. She always made class very fun and inspirational. I hate public speaking but this class helped me brake past those fears.
Awfully harsh with grading with little to no understanding of international students and how their accents come into play when speaking. Her criteria is incredibly vague and barely ever makes sense, as she applies it however she sees fit. Not understanding at all of absences, even if emergencies. Does not communicate deadlines nor expectations.
I took her a few years ago, and now I'm a senior. I took this class as a freshman, and it was the worst grade I've ever received in a class (C). She's a harsh grader. You won't mind her if you're a really great student who always goes above and beyond, but if you're just a good student, it won't be enough for this class.
I had read other ratings and I can tell you they are not lying. Everything worsened after the first speech: either super unhelpful feedback or no feedback at all. She also became cocky and wouldn't care about students' accommodations when it was speech day. TERRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
She fronts as a nice person who understands anxiety and cares for students but the minute you do even the slightest thing to bother her in some way she immediately becomes a nightmare to deal with. I had straight As all quarter and missing one speech day and making it up dropped my grade to a B. She also is passive aggressive when emailed.
this class gave me so much anxiety.
This class just creeped me
this class just gave me axiety
Extremely tough grader BUT DONT GIVE ANY COMMENTS OR FEEDBACK on what i need to work on. What's even the point of improving at thus point
Terrible and does not give feedbacks at all
Rubric was always clear. If you hate public speaking, you'll struggle in this class no matter who you have. Dr. Day was always kind. Class was easy to get a B or higher in, as long as you practiced and tried your best. Ample opportunity given to remediate any bad grades received during the quarter. Overall, great professor!
She gave everyone good scores for the first speech but the more the class went on, the lower the speech grades got, and her feedback was same every time. When I asked why my score dropped and wanted real feedback, she just said “a lot of issues” and then told me not to worry because my overall grade was still an A. She was the worst professor..
