Best philosophy teacher I ever had--she is the reason I minored in PHIL. Gives great assignments and quizzes are reasonable. Gold stars! I loved her approach to the material, and she is always very, very helpful when you have questions.
i hated this chick, i'm a friggin hippy and this chick was out there...way out there
Simple in style, yet very intelligent. Difficult to comprehend material, but with her assistance things lighten up. Make sure to study for tests, make biggest impact on grade!
Prof. Hartz gives you a Workbook of the semester assignments instead of a text book and expects you to learn concepts off her VERY cloudy and confusing lectures. If you're looking for a "self-study" course, this is it!
The work came easy to me. She seems to explain the material well enough for everyone to learn, but some people still don't get it. If you already have some reasoning skills, you should excel.
Her lectures are useless. Pretty much as mentioned: "Self-Study"...something Philosophy should not be!
The teacher did not teach this class very well. No text book. Just a workbook.
no book, **** class
It's nice having a class that all you need is a workbook, but her explainations of things are confusing. This is alomost a complet self study course. She tries to give some explaination but the rest you have to figure out on your own.
You only have to get the work book and she spends at least 2 days on everything. She'll meet with you anytime to help out more. People just don't understand and you can't teach phil through a text book.
This is very much a self taught class because her teaching style is very off the wall. She doesn't explain concepts very clearly. Though I must say that she is willing to help students out of the classrooom.
It was a very boring class
Very caring and understanding. If you ask her to explain something...she actually does it.
kind of hard to listen to, doesn't have a lot of variety.
If she offers extra study sessions before tests make sure to go, they help out a lot! Otherwise try taking Phil 194 with someone else if you want a good grade.
If you want to do well on her unannounced quizzes, you better expect to do a lot of reading. Her lectures don't coincide with the quizzes, but are helpful when taking exams and writing papers
Really stimulated my interest in philosophy. Tests weren't too bad (essay, as I recall).
She's super boring but her class was super easy. No studying at all if you show up to class.
There is no text book. She covers material far too fast to digest. Also you’re graded significantly based on how you group does on in class assignments. Essentially you go home, attempt the homework do it completely wrong and then instead of teaching you the correct way she puts the answers up and
kind of goes through things fast, very boring..grades are only based on group quizzes and tests. You pretty much have to teach yourself
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. I feel dumber from being taught by her.
I hate this teacher. She is the worst professor i have ever had. DO NOT TAKE this class, especially if your interest within the classroom greatly affected by the teacher. I hated going to this class. I rock philosophy and only came out with a b that i struggled for. One plus-no book
Very unsatisfying teacher. She elaborates well at times but when clarification is needed she might snap. Seems to grade on a 'favorable' scale.

This is the prof that is the prof you never want to have. She is absolutely horrible. She is redundant yet manages to say nothin in the time that you sit in her class. The homework given doesn't even help, and when you have questions, she doesn't even answer them!! Do not take this class with this woman!!
She is the most confusing Profe ever! No book for the class ^.^. She talks a lot but does not say anything
Very difficult class. She is a very nice person i just wonder if being the president for the legalization of Marijunna has gotten to her. You have to teach yourself and it is very frustrating. Think talking about nothing over and over. DONT TAKE!
;.; So bad. She talks, talks, and talks and does not say a word! Not helpful... should be fired for being bad professor.
Very difficult class. But I saw the teacher to get help, shes willing to help. But the class makes no sense and its very different from what other PHIL 194 classes do. Good curve but not easy got a B
She isn't that bad. She's very nice and well the class is hard but she was very nice about helping people. I hardly went to class...no homework unless you want to do the worksheets. Just study for 20 minutes before the test and you'll do fine.
terrible teacher. she is hard to follow and doesn't explain things very well. her class is boring and you don't have to do anything.
The class was very very easy. I went to every class but never did the homework or studied for tests and I got an easy A. She does talk a lot, but she just tries to make everything as clear as possible. Loves questions and is very nice to her students.
I had her at the College of Wooster in fall of 1988. Did not like her. She picked favorites and made the material a lot more difficult than necessary. Also did not like the books she chose which seemed to be geared toward a political agenda. Would not take again or recommend. I still remember her almost 20 years later she was so bad!
crazy!!
if you actually try and listen to her in class the material is not hard, tests are straightforward, right from the material, plus she is very very very helpful if you ever want to ask her outside of class for more explanations!
she is kinda boring, but the material is interesting, the textbook is great (it's actually a novel)....you MUST go to class, there is daily homework....shes ok, class if good
Confusing prof. Mumbles when talking and does not give you a clear idea to what is on the test
Very hard I failed it! Took it with a new prof and it was much easier!!
She is an ok professor. She tends to repeat her self often. The material is easy if you pay atteniton in class and do the daily homework.
Totally impossible to understand. I had to drop the class after a week just so I could survive the semester
Hartz is an okay teacher. She can get a little crazy at times but the material is really interesting--it's pretty much a history of philosophy overview. Tests are straight from the class material, no trick questions, and the tests are all multiple choice. She's really picky about papers but as long as you pay attention in class you'll be fine.
Extremely helpful outside of class. Test material is straight forward. If you go to class, you'll be fine. Is very understanding.
Horrible, Horrible I tell you!
I really like Professor Hartz. She was really helpful when I didn't understand the content. The stuff is a bit difficult to understand, but if you actually listen in class and do the homework, it's a lot easier than you'd think.
Useless. Your textbook is a middle school level children's book. She is very narrow minded, if you don't write your essays to match her opinion your grade will be low. Tests are right out of the study guide though. Easy, but boring and useless.
She is one the worst profs ive had and ive been pretty lucky as far as profs go. She is really mono tone and real striaght lined. If you pay attention things are easier but really boring Take SWANK hes the bomb.
She gives you a paper packet that has all of the homework/notes in it which is really nice. You don't have to do any homework, the tests are fairly easy and you get a lot of extra credit every test for simply doing the sudoko on back. Occasionally you get into groups for group work, which is easy. Easy material, no homework, take her for PHIL 194
HORRIBLE! Have to go to class for group work, very boring to listen too. She is not interesting to listen too. Recomend taking another teacher.
She is really annoying to listen to and it is a pretty boring class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she assigns random group work and if your not there then you miss the points and those tend to add up pretty quickly. If you go to class and pay attention you will do fine because it is not hard.
Her voice drives me completely nuts.
the book is a novel, kinda boring book but you dont have to read it, she makes it seem like you do but she only tests and quizes on the notes she gives you in class so if you attend every class and take notes you will get an A easily. But pop quizes so study your notes for like 5 min before each class just in case
I couldn't stand this class its impossible to pay attention and stay awake you won't want to go to class the test are fairly hard but if you dont try you can probably get a C in the class I recommend taking someone who is easier to understand.
Awful teacher. The class is really boring and useless. It's hard to go to class and when you do go it's hard to stay awake. She dresses like a hobo. Don't take her!
Brilliant philosopher!
Very easy common sense stuff.. Extremely boring too, but what do you expect from Philosophy? She's good at explaining, a little too good. I felt like she was talking to us like seventh grades, maybe fifth. But if you need a class to pass, pick this one.
I was quite interested in learning about Philosophy coming into the class. But she completely turned me away. She was very boring and let her personal opinions sway the way the material should be taught. Also no one could take her serious with the way she dresses.
really hard to pay attention. makes me want to fall asleep or just not come to class. you have to pay close attention to what she is talking about because she likes to ramble off subject.. tests are fairly hard just make sure you pay close attention to her. if you can take someone else... do it!
Class is pretty easy if you go and pay attention. You have to complete an online quiz every day, but you're only graded on if you completed it or not. No textbook. Hartz explains things really well, but she's hard to take seriously with the way she dresses. She looks like a slob and wears Legos in her hair. Not the most interesting class, but easy.
No text, homework on D2L. Points for doing homework, not how well you do it. Go to class and print D2L notes daily, she covers things thoroughly. Extra credit is sudoku so practice...4 points each test X 5 tests. Some portions harder than others but fairly easy grade. In class work for points...you miss and can't make it up.
Do not take her. I came into the class wanting to learn about this subject and excited, and now I dread going. She is not helpful doesn't post grades daily quizzes, not a good class
This class is easy if you pay attention and accually try. Homework is all on D2L and it is only graded on completion. Her voice drove me absolutely nuts. So much to the point where I wouldnt come to class. tests were hard, but maybe thats because I rarely came to class...
Super easy class IF you go and pay attention if you dont it will be really hard. No text just D2L quizzes that take from 5 to 10 minutes and are only graded on completion. Sudokus for A LOT of extra credit.
Best professor I've had. She clearly knows what she is talking about and teaches very neutrally about her subject. She is willing to work with students. You will have to put some effort into the class if you want a good grade, but it is a rewarding experience.
Really good proffesor and very helpful. A little weird but in a good way. I recommend her. As long as you go to class you will do very well. Only tests and quizes that you are just given points for doing.
Back in fall 2009 i had her and i think she was a great teacher. Very knowledgable and could help you with your problems you might have. Everything was in the packet she used and her examples in class were great as well. I think all you need to do is put some study effort into the class and good chance you'll get a good grade.
A good professor when it comes to explaining the subject in class. Goes thoroughly into it. Mumbled a lot. Take advantage of sodukos even if you're not so good at it. Exams are easy if you get the material.
I am confused why everyone says she is so great? I barley passed with a D. She is horribly tough, and does not clarify at all. I had to do alot of outside researching to understand this class, I literally taught myself. No textbook required though.
She is very helpful and makes things that don't make sense seem better and clearer.
Class was so easy as long as you read the very short assigned chapter you should understand the homework. Boring but easy.
Any questions you had she answered very promptly. She made things very clear! I highly recommend her!
Very easy class if you read the section assigned and show up to class. If you are confused, just ask her and she will explain to you. Try not to miss class because it's easy to get lost if you get behind. Tests are easy, barely studied.
VERY BORING! Professor lectures throughout the class basically. You write papers every week and she is really strict on grammar. Quizzes due every week along with response paper. Exams are hard, they are short answers and essays only! Rating from 1-10, I give this professor a 4. She can be helpful if you ask but she is poor at teaching the concepts
Met one day a week. Before class had to have read the chapter and turn in your chapter response to discussion question and completed the quiz. These were easy but the midterm she was unclear on what to study. Midterm was on all chapters up to then and Final was chapters from after midterm to the end. Short answer and essay Q on those. +8 page paper
The class seems 10x as long when you have Hartz as a professor. She compares you to 5th graders every day. She rarely uses D2L to post help for the material learned in class. She is helpful if you are confused on anything but she is condescending towards you. I would recommend having another professor for this class.
Hartz lectures a lot, but she also makes sure her students are engaged. If the class is listless, she has us do some agree/disagree, where we move around and debate various topics. She is easy to talk to and is willing to help out her students, you just have to ask. She likes to talk about her work with children (which is usually funny).
I really enjoyed this class and this professor! She made it easy to understand and I look forward to taking more courses with her next fall.
Carolyn is a good teacher, she gets a lot of heat because the course content can be difficult to understand. If you understand REAL logic, this class should be pretty straight forward. You will need to think differently and be okay with changing the way you think to do well in this class. Its a get it or you dont get it class. I enjoyed it though.
Tests were short answer and in class essay. However, she teaches so fabulously that you really don't need to study much for these tests to get good grades. There's a lot of participation possible, which I HIGHLY recommend you take part in as much as possible. This will help you a lot in remembering the ideas in the class.
Lectured and then did an in-class group assignment, was difficult if you didn't understand what you were doing right away. Nice Professor.
This class was difficult and the hot, sweaty, packed room of CH100 did not help the situation. Prof Hartz lectures are just OK and besides a couple exams there is not much opportunity for points. Group assignments are tough because group projects sucks (thats college for ya). A couple bad scores on those and suddenly you are struggling for that B-
No textbook. This class is a breeze. Lectures are interesting and there's plenty of opportunity to practice concepts. Will talk students through issues they're having. Graded group work in class and online quizzes are main source of points besides exams. I'd love to take another class with Hartz.
Dr. Hartz was a good professor. She actually taught "critical thinking" and logical arguments. I learned a lot about philosophy even though I am not a philosophy major. She did not require a book which was really nice. Also there was no homework for this class. She was flexible and caring.
Carolyn is a really good professor to have when you just start at SCSU. She has a peer mentor within the class to help guide you through transition as well as helps you if you need to find a place. In regards to the class, make sure to go to the write place to fix any grammatical errors + ask for advice regarding your paper before submission.
Quizzes everyday in class and everyday after class. You are better off sleeping through lectures and teaching yourself through the in class practice assignments. Her lectures often conflict with each other
Video Games and Philosophy, not what I expected. Barely talk about video games, more about just dry philosophy. The book that you need is dry, and online quizzes can be too difficult for a low level class. Exams are harder than you expect, impossible to remember anything without some form of homework. Attendance is big part of your grade.
It was an open book class which was helpful. She struggles to speak clearly, a lot of "uhh's" and "uhm's", also a lot of concepts were explained in a confusing way. She's very nice, will help in the zoom breakout rooms but I hated how much a group hurt your grade, if you had a bunch of ppl who didn't pay attention, you were basically on your own.
Awesome professor. Gives a lot of quizzes and to be done in groups, that's the only bummer. But very available if you need her. Gives very good advise as well.
Overall a great professor. The tests are difficult. She did an amazing job transitioning the course to online learning. Attendance is crucial, reading ahead and paying attention is the key to success in this course.
Only homework is 5 point quiz before each class, and 5 point quiz at the end of each class done with classmates. Quizzes are pretty hard along with the tests. She's a very nice professor overall and doesn't give a lot of homework. Book is needed for the class as well!
I took this class last semester it was THE most boring class I've ever taken. The teacher was boring her examples were not relatable at all. the textbook is mandatory and is very hard to understand I think she might have wrote it too. she didn't do a good job explaining the book since it was difficult. There are quizzes each week which are very.
Just don't put yourself through this class. Horrible.
Professor Hartz is one of the most helpful professors I've ever had. She only made us do the reading outside of class because she wanted us to work on the homework in class so she could help. The book made no sense but she explained it in a way that everyone in the class could understand. 10/10 professor 8/10 course (Phil 223)
I am absolutely NOT a math/logic person, and I was DREADING taking a class to fulfill this goal area. Dr. Hartz teaches formal and symbolic logic in a way that is incredibly accessible and is happy to give you the tools you need to succeed. She is kind, engaging, and is clearly passionate about what she does. Take this class to meet goal 5!
Pretty good lectures, and knows what she's talking about. Can be a bit boring, but you will learn from her. Got a great understanding on logic from this class, so i don't regret it at all.
