Teaches Biol 41 - Microbiology, Biol 45 - Nutrition, and Biol 40 Lab - Anatomy & Physiology. She is an excellent teacher, tests are sometimes difficult but if you work hard you should do well. Great class website too that is beneficial.
Great instructur. Very clear and to the point. Classes are fun and interesting.
ms. holcroft is super sweet! :) she makes the class intersting and fun...never boring! unlike you know who!
cool professor!!!!!! smart one believe me!
I took her for Nutrition during the summer and I got my first A of the program. She teaches you a ton and is so organized that it just comes easy to you. I liked her so much that I took her for Micro. She is great. Take her!!!
Great teacher, very clear and organized. Lots of extra credit. I thought I'd hate microbiology, but she made it fun.
Great lectures, smart lady! However I had to work 3 times as hard as usual to get an A. She wants you to be well-read and assigns a TON of reading, and you never know what she will get nit-picky on for tests. Work hard & keep up!
She is one of the best teachers I ever had!!! Took Micro and Nutrition with her.
Prof. Holcroft knows her subject matter well. She's an extremely intelligent lady, and great role model. She is also fair and her tests are straightforward. However, the class should be worth 10 units not 5. I don't believe this is her fault. I think the department sets these standards.
she is not a helpful teacher
Super smart, organized, grades fast. She makes lectures fun, and she's such a cute lady! Just study and you'll do fine.
The class average for the first exam was a 78%, the class average for the 2nd midterm was a 75%, she assigns lots of reading, skims through the material in class, make sure your willing to put in the extraaaa effort to stay on top of all your work, lots of material~!!!!! She's an alright teacher....
Class should be at least 7 units instead of 5, maybe even 10 units. The upside is that she is an excellent prof. Very organized, very fast grader, and she makes the class fun and has a sense of humor. But you better be willing to put in lots of time in this class. Her tests are straigt forward.
She is perfect teacher, very smart. Be sure to get in her lab class too.
Lots of reading. Don't fall behind and you'll do fine. Very interesting subject. Learned a lot of useful information that can be applied personally. Do as much extra credit as you can.
Lack of carity in her lecture and exam questions.
Her nutrition class should be 5-6 units, not 4.The double work comes from external readings beyond the course text as well as her very hard and demanding exams-multiple choice with identification. She doesn't curve despite of a very low average/mean of student scores=72.I had to drop to keep my good GPA and I've never dropped a course before this.
Holcraft is a tough teacher! Her lectures are entertaining and she does know her material. Her exams are multiple choice and are NOT EASY! You really need to KNOW the material inside out. Regurgitate the material 300 different ways before taking her tests. Was a straight 4.0 student- ended up with a B- shy of 8 correct answers on my final!
Professor is well organized and tests are fair - I agree with the previous students ... you MUST study and work outside of class. I felt the class was easy and slacked and ended up just shy of an A == really if you make a moderate effort she does the rest of the work, I lost my A fair and square - class time goes by fast.
I dreaded taking Micro, but she was the best professor I have EVER had and it ended up being the favorite class that I have ever taken! She is so organized, clear on what is required, and her use of the Etudes website incredibly helpful. It's not an easy class, but don't slack, study the review notes (on the website), and you will do fine.
Professor Holcroft is an excelent teacher. Her lecture are interesting as well as her lab. She makes a microbiology, a difficult subject, intersting with her animated lectures. She is also a very attractive woman so paying attention is not difficult
This teacher is unnecessarily difficult. She attempts to teach a semester level class in 10.5 weeks, NOT 12 weeks. Lab closes week 11 and Lecture final is the first day of the final week. ALWAYS get your tests back and make sure they haven't been mis-graded.
Awesome teacher just makes you want to come to class and learn.
B is not the word to describe her...The class was hard as hell and she makes it even more harder. The worst teacher i ever had.. Old lady needs to get a life.....
It is a very difficult subject and a lot of information in a short time but let's be fair, the teacher is ok.
She has a knack in making learning fun! Yeah, you have to do a lot of research on your own, but it's very rewarding in the end. She is also very nice and approachable.
Her online greensheet is unorganized and confusing; be careful or you may miss an assignment. She assigns way too much online reading at multiple sites, which is a majority of her tests, but she does not lecture on those readings, so you need to really study the material. I felt she rushed at end of quarter.
She's one of the best and nicest professor i have ever had. She's very clear and precise. Her lectures are actually fun and she's very animated, you wont get bored listening to her. Micro is just a tough class, dumb people hate her because they are dumb. Just study what she tells you and you are fine. By the way she's very cute, super hot
I would bet money that Holcroft herself wrote that last post! Why, I took her class and found her to ; makes simple topics uneccesarily difficult, yes lectures were fun, but she in no way covers material in depth that you will be tested on, ditto for lab, lastly, she by no stretch of the imagination would be refered to,as "Hot". Also I am not dumb
Actually she is teaching Chemistry instead of focusing on Nutrition! and asking for toooooooooo much work!Heyyyyyy, we are just college student.
Regret forever to be her student. She never wants to help you…. Crazy women! Unfair treatment. Don’t take her class.
I enjoyed her classes and learned a lot from them. She is very knowledgeable, and if one is really interested in learning the subjects rather than focusing on the grade, take her classes. Definitely have to put in A LOT of work, but she also puts in a lot of effort to prepare the course and teach the subjects! Exams and assignments are not easy!
I think it's hysterical that Holcroft keeps writing positively glowing posts about herself. This is the real truth; she is a controll freak. She loads up the course with exhausting rules and too much material. Because she wants students to "Work for their grade", she omits much info in lecture, leading to confusion and many gaps in comprehension.
Control Freak; Don't askany questions unless you want to feel stupid.
Too much works! She was ok, but she never thoughts that we did have another classes which student were taking in the same time. No matter her class how important is ! If you want to get A, It is not easy.
I took microbiology with her she was the best bio teacher in all my nursing classes, Very smart. she knows more than most professors i've met in community colleges. Tough, but you learn so much in her class, it's good for you. Especially nursing major students... if u are gonna be a nurse u better know this stuff!!! dont be a dumb nurse! she is h
Don't be fooled by her sweetness! Carolyn gives the hardest tests I've encountered. Make sure you study the objective questions IN DETAIL or you will never make it. This is for your own good. Also, take some time to explore the class website because it's pretty disorganized and you'll need to find important papers later on.
Currently taking her for both Bio 41 & 45. Let me say this, NOT EASY! I've been a straight A student at Foothill this whole year. I love her courses but she is tough! So all I can say is study and know your stuff. Don't get behind in the reading for Nutrition and really comprehend the material.
She is a good instructor: interesting, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. She doesn't cover everything you need to know for the tests in depth, so be prepared to spend a lot of time studyng and researching on your own. There is a ton of work, so much that you barely have time to absorb everything unless you study several hours a day.
I took her nutrition class online and it was horrible. The only way to study for the midterms was through her review questions and they usually were completely different on the actual tests. It is mostly memorizing thousands of terms. And she is no help at all. She will just make you feel stupid.
SHE GIVES A LOT OF HW AND QUIZZES. AND WHEN I SAY A LOT. IT REALLY MEANS A LOTTTTTTTTTTTT. ACCORDING TO THE SCHUDULE, WE HAVE SO MUCH WORK TO DO EVERY SINGLE WEEK. I DROP HER CLASS AFTER THE FIRST WEEK DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF WORK BECAUSE I KNOW I WON'T HAVE TIME FOR MY OTHER CLASSES. PS THERE IS A LOT TO DO IN HW ASSIGNMENT AND ITS NOT EASY.
Very nice, but very tough. Not an easy class at all.
Carol is a very helpful and clear teacher, who is trying to fit a rediculous amount of information into a single quarter class. The test schedule did get rediculous near the end of the quarter, but it is by no means impossible. This is a weeder course: it's hard, and if you can't do well here, you won't do well further down the medical path.
I think she's a great teacher! She knows the material so well and is wonderful at teaching those of us that haven never encountered it before.
She is very helpful. Her lectures are good and well organized. I think the material itself is hard. I learned a lot in her class. I think everbody should take this class for good health, hygiene, and prevention from diseases.
Class has the worst structure imaginable. I was a 4.0 student and I felt lost most of the class. The website is terrible. Don't challenge her on anything, she'll stick it to you in the written portion. Should have listened to the other reviews.
Very good teacher. Lectures at breakneck speed!
Her tests are extrmely unfair. i deopped b4 getting a W. i highly recommend taking someone else.
She is the worst teacher ever. She will never help you, just pretend to be nice to you but when you ask her questions. She will not help. Bad bad teacher. Don't take her class. I am serious. She is bad
Don't take her class. She is the worst
People said that she tries to write her own rating... Don't take her class
I am trying to study for her final right now and all I can think is "OHHH MY GOSH...WAY TOOOO MUCH FREAKIN WORK....ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!" Seriously she is a great teacher but the amount of work she puts online (10-12 articles + study questions to go with them) is outragious! Understand that she is a great teacher she just gives WAY TOO MUCH WORK!
I took Human Nutrition from her and studied hard for an A. Her class is A LOT of work. She throws a ton of information at you online and in lecture. Each test is like a final, takes each student about 2 hours to finish, and if the bulk of the final grade. I didn't find her very approachable, so you're left to figure it all out yourself.
She could be an excellent teacher by not giving to open ended questions in tests because she cannot tell you exactly how detailed she wants your answers. Does not use multiple choices like other teachers. If you do not have an excellent memory, don't take her class.
I took Dr. Burn's class this past Spring and though it was a lot of work (A LOT to cover in one quarter), I was amazed on how much I learned. She gives ample extra credit points and I did have to study quite a bit to earn the "B" I got in the class. Dr. Burns was approachable and very willing to help her students.
She is not that bad. Yes, a lot of work, but you do learn. She is good at reducing big concepts into digestible morsels. She is not stingy in giving out praises and is quite responsive both in class & online. And she is one of the younger, and more energetic professors among her profession.
Nice lady but very unorganized. She not only 'forgot' to add certain things to the exam, then later said she would give us hw to make up for it, then later decides to put it on the next exam, geeze make up your mind! There is ALOT of info to memorize and it's frustrating when she doesn't follow her own syllabus! At least post changes online!!
Despite what others say, Burns is very organized. Her class does include a tremendous amount of info, however she breaks it down, and the students can definately take away what is important and useful in future careers. kudos to her background in nursing.....a huge asset!
I think the extra work helps you with your grade. Gives almost 40 extra credit points if you pay attention. She gives topics for review for tests and everything, so I don't see why people are complaining. Great teacher to have.
Loved, Loved, Loved this class. Took her for Nutrition and learned so much. Yes there is a lot work but you end up coming out ahead if you just suck it up and do it. Just study her notes and pay attention in class and you should do fine. Assignments were pretty simple and interesting. Exams were multiple choice and short answer.
she is the worst ever. Don't take her class if not you will hate BIO forever
Avoid taking this class. You will start hating nutrition by taking it. Too much work and reading. Try to take this class with another teacher or maybe in another college
The worst way to take a Lab/Lec course is to have two teachers teaching each section. They don't synch very well and the other is annoyed w/ the other's teaching style. Holcroft is nice but her lec. are useless - too general in lecture and often goes off tangents while her tests are super specific. lectures are completely useless. take someone else
Worst teacher ever! I am sure all the nice notes on this website were written by her. Too much material, we get lost on a ocean of information. We never know how to prepare for her tests. In class she cant focus on subject. I am a A student, and messed up my GPA with her class.
SHE ACTS LIKE THIS IS YOUR ONLY CLASS. PACKS 2 QUARTERS WORTH OF TALKING INTO ONE. SHOULD BE 10 UNIT CLASS. DONT TAKE HER. EXAMS ARE LIKE A COMPREHENSIVE FINAL. EXAMS ARE NOT CLEAR. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR LOOK FOR SOMEONE ELSE. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE HER PREPARE TO WORK YOU BUTT OFF FOR A LOW GRADE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!
Dedicated and interesting professor. Don't take her classes if you are lazy. If you are genuinely interested in learning the material, she will go out of her way to make sure you learn the material. Her tests are hard, but if she gives you a very generous amount of extra credit opportunities and many assignments that are easy to get high marks on.
Dr. Holcroft's nutrition class was tough, but rewarding. I learned stuff directly applicable to my life and had fun. This was the best of the five bio classes I've had at Foothill but I have to admit that earning a good grade took a heck of a lot of work. You get four units but it feels more like six units of work. There's a lot to absorb.
DO YOUR STUDY QUESTIONS! Tests/quizzes are directly from those packets. In the online course you could retake the quizzes as many times til you got it perfect! There is a lot of info, but it's important stuff that you MUST know in a medical field so suck it up. There's a lot of "class participation"(online), but hw is easy and lectures are clear.
Her lectures ARE pretty general but she requires you to know things more in depth on tests. Textbook is a must. My only complaint is that things would be on tests that she mentioned VERY briefly. Review Q's-very helpful, practice test tests are nice as well. Only thing is I think she has a thing against us guys...
One of the sweetest and nicest ladies ive ever had the pleasure of interacting with. She loves class participants and making lessons fun, so talk whenever you can and be nice! I never once saw her be mean or even too strict on a student, no matter how they acted towards her. Very calm lady A+ to her
This woman is very unfair. Moody. very moody. some days laughing like a mad cow and easy other days so mean and strick. She thinks that her class is everything in the world. Please don't take her classes. Take with other teachers or De Anza. if not you will regret forever
This online class is hard and time consuming. There is a lot of detailed info. You have to know EVERYTHING for the exams and the there is a lot of HW. Advice: Take only if this is your only class and do all the study guides. Do not fall behind on doing discussions or HWs. Overall, info is very relevant for allied health majors.
Wow. This is is just a horrible class. We should buy the book and take a test from it. But the lectures are a waste of time and Professor Holcroft never has her office hours because of all her personal commitments. Geez. You're a teacher. Be one for once! So many great Biology professors and she misses the mark big time.
I took this class online and it was very informative. You just have to stay on top of the text. It's not too difficult because it has to do with daily health and nutrition, so you encounter it anyway. She assigns a couple group projects which are fairly easy. She gives out weekly quizzes, but you have unlimited time. It's impossible to do poorly.
I agree with the other comment that her lecture is way too general. She leaves out details either cos she's disorganized or withholds them on purpose. Those are things appear on the test. She's very subjective when grading. Can't stand her acting cutesy. When u ask questions after class, she'd give quick answer & move on to next person. TIP: kis'up
I don't know about these negative ratings, but I took her for the recent fall quarter, and she's a really good professor. You have 3 tests (including a final) and you get to retake the 2nd part of the test in lab with your lab partner. The lab professor (Gosavi) is a lenient grader. All I did was go to class and study and I got an A in the class.
I'm in shock that anyone would rate this instructor anything, but poor quality. She is the most scattered, disorganized, & lazy lecturer I've EVER had! Microbio is a complex subject that I was excited to learn. I feel ripped off. Yeah, I have a B, but didn't learn anything. I scrambled to catch pts & it wasn't easy. Smart person. Bad instructor.
She will tell you to focus on the "big picture" but will ask details on the exams! her tests are really hard to study for because you never know what she wants you to know and reading the book won't help at all. If you can, don't take this professor!! the final caught me off gaurd, super hard and half of it was written response!
Tough teacher, hardest earned B I ever had. A lot of work, you need to commit a lot of your time to this class because there are multiple assignments due every week.online quizzes are unlimited so thats a plus.
Very meticulous and knowledgeable instructor. In my experience with her for both BIO 41 and 45, she is not nearly as hard as people here are making her out to be. In fact, for my BIO45 class (spring '11), there were 18 either A+s,As or A-s out of the 40 students that finished the course. Also muy caliente.....
Took the class online. There was a lot of work but none of it was difficult. If you can express yourself well in writing and put in the time you will do fine. I really liked her online "lectures." They broke down complex topics very well and were easy to read. Instructor gets behind on grading frequently. Overall good class.
Microbio is going to be difficult, no matter who teaches it. Carolyn did a good job, she made things pretty clear and her expectations of students where plain (although still not easy). I went to med school after taking her class, her teaching did help me there.
Online Nutrition - A lot of work for an online class. However, you can take unlimited quizzes and there are 2 tries for the online midterms. You don't really need the book (just the Nutrition Calc Registration code) since she mostly quizzes from her online lectures. It's a lot of work, but she keeps it interesting.
All I can say is: RUN! She does NOT give out A's, I did all assignments perfectly and still got a B. She literally takes off points for no reason. If English is not your first language, you are screwed because she expects a perfect grammar essay on nutrition EVERY week. She seems to enjoy ruining lives. She is the WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!!!!!!!
Took her for lab. Big mistake, she was all over the place. Did not cover material well at all. Most of the learning I did on my own. She seems smart and well informed however, maybe should practice how to teach a class.
pleasant person, but bad teacher - i get that she wants to be the interactive type but she really, really just needs to get through the material and lecture sometimes. you can do the reading but you'll never know what you thought was wrong because she just doesn't cover all the material in a consistent manner if at all, then boom, it's on the test
I took her online nutrition class. Really easy! Every exam and quiz has no time limit and you can take each exam twice. If you have a question though, don't expect too much help. She often refers back to notes or asks you to google it. Rarely had any questions though. Course was very easy. Make sure your grammar and spelling is correct though!!
Dr. Holcroft is super nice, great at lecture, and very helpful! Even kind of foxy for her age haha! Her class does take a fair bit of studying though. Take her if you want to learn and be around a great person. Don't take her if you just wanna BS your way through Biology cuz that's not gonna happen.
She likes the whole new-agey interactive teach each other type of style. The rare times she lectured she was wonderful (VERY charismatic) but it's mostly group work. Lots of test questions end up hinging on technicalities or her interpretation but don't panic. PARTICIPATE and demonstrate you know what you're talking about and grades will follow.
I took her on line nutrition class and it was a lot of work but not terribly difficult. A lot of writing. She did a great job of keeping us engaged and motivated and involved which is tough on line. She writes a lot of the reading herself and it's very easy to understand. HIGHLY recommend her. She's funny and knows her stuff. I learned a lot.
Carolyn is amazing. She is extremely nice and welcoming to her class. Just come to class and do all the essays, quizzes, homework, and classwork and even if you do poorly you can get at least a B-. She also remembered me when I ran into her which I feel a lot of teachers can't do. I would recommend taking her class, it's fun and you still learn.
My previous review was deleted, but I still stand by my opinion that she is unclear with directions. I got an A, but her rambling instructions were frustrating. Also we didn't have the benefit of receiving graded work before submitting another report. Still, you can rack up pts on quizzes + exams, so at least that was objective.
She's crystal clear of what she wants. A lot of writing but they are fairly easy---6 discussions + 11 analyses (your grade depends on these) and 3 exams + 11 quizzes.
Holcroft is an incredible teacher! She's funny and helpful. If you want to actually learn about Nutrition, take this class! You have to work for your A. Each week you do an extensive analysis of one part of your diet (carbs, protein, vitamins). Weekly quizzes that you can retake unlimited number of times. No final. Some discussion assignments.
Took a fascinating honors seminar with her. Super helpful and cares about her students understanding the information. Best science teacher I've had at Foothill
I did every homework, spent so much time on this class, followed her rules and never got an A. I don't recommend her
Being a nutrition major, I thought I was going to enjoy this "easy" class; boy was I wrong. This is a 4 unit class (in a qtr system) and takes more than double the time of my other 2 five unit classes combined(no exaggeration). If you like harsh grading, non-stop hw, and really hard quizestests for only 4 units(qtr system), this is ur teacher!
this is one heck of a 4 unit class. no txtbook but she will make u work ur butt off for hrs just to get a bad grade on assignments. weekly u write long analyses of ur dietary intake, long discussion posts & take fill-in quizzes. if ur not too knowledgeable on nutrition i recommend taking it at de anza with another teacher. this is a tough class.
Wow for a 4 unit class she sure was a tough grader! ALOT of writing in the class, there is no getting away with writing something quickly-- grammar and thought is necessary to get high marks on analysis. There is a lot of work to do in this class, so if your not prepared to budget time there is no chance in doing well.
Professor Holcroft's online Human Nutrition class was fun and interesting. Her lectures were provided via websites that she put together with pretty straight-forward reading material. Weekly dietary analyses are very time consuming but they really help you learn. Expect putting in about 8-10 hours a week for an A grade.
Dr. Holcroft cares so much about her students and is highly approachable. She will send you reminders if you havent take a quiz. She will allow you to stay after class if you want to keep working on the in-class assignments; however, she needs to upgrade the online quizzes and some links that she provides, since we don't use any books.
Don't take class with her. She was the worst professor that I had at foothill college.
She assigns a ton of work. She is a nice person, but the comments that she leaves on your papers are pretty rude. She can come off as condensing. There are so many papers and they must be incredibly detailed. She is a ridiculously hard grader. Like she grades you on participation (only professor I know that does that) I suggest avoiding her.
