Awesome professor. Highly recommend her! Carolyn is super nice and understanding and her course is very fair. Do your work/homework, and come to class and participate and make sure to study the material and you'll do great.
Probably the best prof I have ever had! The lectures were a little dry but she tried her best to keep content engaging. Assignments took a fair amount of time but she was always available for office hours and answered emails quickly for questions. Participate and come to class and she'll give some bonus marks!
She is an awesome prof!! Definitely made first year communication course very enjoyable! She cares about her students and if you put in the work it is easy to get good marks with her! Would take one of her courses again.
She's super sweet and cute! She's very easy going and even though the lectures can be very long, there are breaks given and projects are spaced out well so you don't feel overwhelmed with a lot of work. Readings are optional for this class! Visit her during her office hours, she cares for her students!
This was one of the most interesting classes I've taken at Ryerson. The lectures and assignments I found to be very cool and creative. There is a lot of group work though. Carolyn is very fair in marking and gives great feedback on assignments. I would definitely take another one of her classes.
She's great! Incredibly easy marker (although maybe that was her TA). Her knowledge is impressive. The class itself is a bit weird and abstract, I barely took notes. The course revolved around a semester-long group project.
Loved her! Her class is very practical and includes many fun group assignments! Be sure to follow along in the tech demos-- they become useful in the end!
Her assignments were a lot of fun but be prepared for a lot of group work.
She's amazing. I had the greatest time with her. She knows so much about art. She applies it perfectly to her classes. She grades well. My entire group loved her. She's super HOTT. 10/10 would take again!!!!!!!!
Literally the most chill Prof I've ever had. She's so fun to listen to and super knowledgeable. She grades really generously and is fast when responding to emails. Would 100% take her again.
I've had Carolyn for two classes now and have also enjoyed the courses. There was no textbook for the course and the lectures were supplementary to the group projects. There is no test in the course and all group projects. Be sure to speak with her beforehand about your ideas for each project to ensure you are on the right track!
Carolyn is a great prof and genuinely makes class fun. She marks assignments fairly and always makes sure you understand the assignment before handing it in. She's not the most accessible outside of class, but she provides more than enough opportunities to discuss anything with her in class.
If she doesn't like your idea, no matter how good your project is, you'll get a bad grade. However, she IS a good prof and I enjoyed her lectures.
She was a nice teacher and a good marker, but does not give good feedback and marks hard for final assignment. participation is mandatory cause you can miss a lot of info... overall pretty good. lectures are kinda boring tho.
If your class is online, avoid this prof. The outline for the course is 2 assignments (45% and 55%) everyone has different due dates, so some people have lots of time others are rushed. The description for the assignments are so vague, she does not answer questions clearly or nicely. Avoid
2 projects only which she gave very little direction on. Not allowed to ask any content or assignment related questions (or anything that you might be able to find on the syllabus) over email or you get marks deducted. "Taught" photoshop solely by linking us to the free adobe tutorials. There's more but I don't have enough characters to finish
Seems like she is against the students. Doesn't want to communicate with students, eliminates question asking avenues, cancels office hours. She also does not know how to use Zoom, which makes things very difficult. I'm sure she's much better in person, and she does know what she is talking about, she seems nice but online school is not for her.
Is not accommodating to the circumstances, especially during the pandemic. The course is made unnecessarily hard by making things difficult that don't need to be. We aren't allowed to contact her by email unless its an emergency, asynchronous lectures are taken down, chat is disabled in zoom call, and a few other things.
Prof. Kane is one of those odd profs, very difficult to understand and very poor social skills. She does not answer questions, and cuts you off, actually forbidding it. She does not allow being emailed, and her assignments have very little direction, she will put u down nonchalantly. She said she rarely gives out As, that said do not recommend
She was the worst professor I have ever had and if you get into her class you should switch out immediately... You aren't allowed to ask questions and she makes sure to be as unaccommodating as possible- do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.
no just no... im losing braincells over this course. Basically just get a bunch of useless videos and readings thrown at you in which you are expected to write a giant essay about which is worth 50%. Also shes very rude, unaccommodating, and unorganized.
took her because of the good ratings but my experience was very different. she seems disinterested in the class. there are just two assignments but they're worth 55% and 45%. on top of this there's almost zero description as to what is expected from us in the assignment. this class is extremely stressful for multiple students.
worst prof ever. Very rude, unaccommodating, I think she hates her job and takes it out on her students. Only two assignments, and takes marks off for "unprofessionalism" if you email her. Don't know how shes a teacher, if you get her switch out- your mental health will thank you
Dont take this prof, every assignment is subjective. Theres only 2 assignments and there's no rubrics, I learned nothing. waste of money and time.
Do not take this class. Switch profs if you have her. Carolyn doesn't care about the well-being of her students. I know zero nothing new about communication with colour. Waste of time.
Not a bad prof, just wouldn't take a class of her's again.
She's not mean or anything, I just didn't learn a thing. We had two assignments (we had to make a portrait on photoshop, and then the final was a 2500 word essay + 2 minute presentation). I listened to the lectures like they were podcasts + I didn't read a thing; I still finished with an A.
She was not as bad as these reviews make her seem tbh, I kinda liked how we were able to direct ourselves because everything was open ended. I was able to do projects based on topics that actually interested me. Do not take this course to learn something, you won't. But take it for an easy A. The whole losing marks for emailing her is STUPID tho Xx
meh, don't take it to learn something
She is a terrible professor in terms of teaching, I learnt nothing. There are 2 assignments the first is a portrait and has gives no guidelines for it and gives you a mark based on if she likes your art, not based on criteria. The second is a 2500 word essay and 2 min presentation. SWITCH PROFS IF YOU CAN SHE IS A HORRID PROFESSOR NOT EVEN A DR.
I had Carolyn in first year and she wasn't too bad. Having her a second time for CMN310 was BRUTAL!! Refuses to meet with you, doesn't let you email her (you have to email the TA), and her assignment instructions were way too broad. She criticizes your work publicly and often comes off as arrogant. Would not take again, esp in remote setting.
ruined my mental health to the point of scary. don't take this class if you have the choice. honestly just read the latest reviews, they're all right in the sense that she doesn't care, you won't learn anything, and she will deduct marks if you even try to email her. horrible class especially during a pandemic and remote. TA is the best tho
One of the worst profs at Ryerson. She had a rule where if anyone in the class emailed her, then the entire class would lose 1% per email. Our entire class got a total of 10% deducted from our grades at the end. Also would scrutinize peoples work in front of the entire class and say it was bad. I have a disability and she made fun of my disability.
Multiple students have reported her for her behaviour. She bullies students, looks down on them, and takes her anger out on them. She also talks in class about how 'America is so much better than Canada' and would require our assignments to be in Chicago style because "everything American is better". If you don't know Chicago style, don't take her
Your mark is made up of 2 assignments both worth 40%, then the last 20% is presenting the project. The instructions are extremely vague, basically up to the student to do whatever they want but it's clear that Kane has a vision of want she wants to see. She expects you to read her mind and know exactly what she wants. Can't believe I paid for this.
Did not learn much as two assignments each worth 50% relate more to learning to use Adobe photoshop rather than course content. Kane was somewhat pleasant but became passive aggressive towards students at times while giving what should have been private critiques and negative feedback to certain students in front of classmates.
Professor is very unaccommodating, to put it nicely. The grading criteria were extremely ambiguous, and the professor was unwilling to be helpful or explain anything, basically reluctant to teach. She is unprofessional and will not answer questions. I learned nothing that I didn't teach myself.
This class was by far the worst experience I have had yet during my time at TMU. The class material is useless as the slides consist of only visuals that do not even end up being posted on D2L. There are only two waited projects for the WHOLE semester which are both very broad. Prof is extremely rude and inconsiderate. Change classes while you can!
Online midterms and finals, two response papers which compared to other classes is way easier
Her classes are online, but she marks SUPER hard on the assignments and doesn't give clear criteria on the grading rubric. **TRUST ME**, you'll go into it thinking this course is supposed to be easy, but she gives horrible grades on assignments to balance out the students scoring A's on the online tests. If you can, take any other professor.
Worst professor ever. Save yourself the hassle and take another class. Not accessible at all through e-mail and doesn't make slides available after the week a topic is taught. She puts stuff on the tests that aren't even taught in the lectures unless you analyze every single word of the 3+ textbooks of this class
save yourself the headache. supposed to be a semi-easy course but she has genuine enjoyment in making students lives miserable in all facets.
Just don't take her. I e-mailed her about my situation regarding a serious illness that prevented me from completing work for about 5 weeks, and she never responded. I had to communicate through her TA's and was denied an extension despite valid doctor notes and concrete proof of illness. She will make your mental health terrible!
flat out awful. her behavior towards students not only leads me to the conclusion that she's a bad prof, but that shes a bad human as well. she makes no effort to respond to emails, post lecture slides, or update her outdated assignments. she will mark u harder than any other english-related teacher you've ever had. would never take again.
Carolyn Kane is more washed than Celtics shaq. Mind u all of her "good" ratings on this page are from years ago. Ever since the pandemic happened, she started teaching online and became a miserable professor.
Dont take her unless u want ur tuition money to go to waste.
Never again. Her teaching style isn't helpful at all and she has tough graders as her TA's. She's also the only CMN279 prof that taught a different curriculum.
The 2 stars rating she has on this website is very misleading. Horrible prof and I'd genuinely give her a 0/5 if I could. I got a decent mark in her class and still hate her as a teacher so i think u can take my word for it.
I seriously can't believe she's employed by an academic institution. Yes I passed her class with a good mark, but it was way harder than it should've been and I didn't learn anything of value. You're basically dumping your money down the drain by taking a horrible professor like Carolyn Kane. She isn't good as a person or teacher.
Her recorded lectures are hilarious. She yaps on and on about meaningless stuff that doesn't help you on the exams, and takes 5+ minutes of your time by playing a useless Youtube video about cartoons. I WISH I WAS JOKING. On top of all that, she doesn't post the lectures on D2L. All I'm gonna say is take any other professor at all costs.
Avoid at all costs. CMN279 in general is a course on the easier side but she'll make sure to make your life hell with the grading schemes. BTW I don't know how she is getting paid for doing "asynchronous" teaching when all shes doing is posting old videos from 4+ years ago. Infinite money glitch
It's very rare that I dislike a professor, but Carolyn Kane is by far the worst one I've encountered throughout my academic career. She is hard to reach, teaches outdated stuff, doesn't post slides, and just hands you 50+ pages to read and submit, only to get marked under rigorous observation. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER.
lectures are incredibly difficult to understand using a different form of the English language, she over complicates everything using terminology you'll have to look up. She loves to articulate and take all your time up explains irrelevant topics. 75 mc in 38 minutes on the exam is disgusting, taking the time to think is cheating now I guess.
She's so funny for giving 30 seconds per question for an exam. This course was great at the start but then she put time constraints on the lecture videos, provides no slides, and sets you up to fail on the exam. I agree with the other post that the exam time limit is laughable and she has changed the syllabus 3 times. I like asynch classes, not her
So this professor decides to implement lockdown browser and monitor this far into the semester. Idek if changing the course outline in the middle of the semester is within the school policies. TMU should definitely look into the stuff she's doing.
This prof is not transparent at all, and does not respond to any email. This prof will change the course outline in the middle of the semester and after the drop out time essentially trapping you in a course where you have final exam with 75 mcq IN 38 MINUTES how????
Don't take this course, but for her behaviour with changing her exam MID SEMESTER to a closed book, lockdown browser, 75 MCQ in 38 minutes is horrifyingly stupid. She deserves a 0/5 across all boards.
I had Carolyn for CMN279, and she's the worst teacher I've had throughout my entire life. She reuses outdated "lecture videos" that barely teach you anything, and doesn't keep them uploaded after the week is done. You are expected to read pages upon pages of the textbooks, and then write some assignments only to receive a lower mark than expected.
Don't take this, professor. At the last minute, she changed our midterm without warning from a semi-open book exam to a closed book 75-question multiple choice exam with a lockdown browser. If you were going to do that, you should have determined that in the beginning, not the middle.
Avoid her at all costs!!
!!!!!DO NOT USE THIS PROF!!!!! To everyone considering using this prof, I promise you you WILL reget it.
This professor changed the final exam mid-sem to 77 questions in 38 minutes, if you want to pretend to be a UoFT student and get a severe mental illness, Welcome to the club.
L prof, changed the course outline last minute and is making us do 75 mq in 38 minutes under lockdown browser AND restricts each weeks content. She's a joke idk why she's even employed. Probably mad every takes com classes as easy liberals.
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
just don't do it
Please don't take this lady so she can have low enrolment and get kicked out. Worst of tmu
Really difficult to follow along- lectures don't not have slides with notes (just pictures), especially considering she quotes from readings A LOT, without adequately defining terms and explaining it in a way that is actually comprehensible to students. Professors are supposed to make things clear; there's no need to make things more complex.
She is the most unprofessional professor I have had to deal with with in all my years in post-secondary, mind you, she is a professional communications professor, but is far from professional and cannot communicate whatsoever, we must communicate to the TA's and they do not have control over how the course is ran. She doesn't even do her job right.
Changed the final from 77 mcqs in 60 mins openbook to 75 mcqs in 38 mins closed book, a month before the final. Very difficult to study considering she has no slides, just post pictures and talks, and blocks our access to the videos at the end of each week. The videos are old and we cannot communicate with her. She is inconsiderate of students.
She wants you to fail. Avoid this class if she is teaching it. If you care about your GPA, do not take this class. Changed the final format at the last minute, made it unnecessarily complicated and no explanation with regards to why she made these changes. This class is no longer testing your knowledge with all the restrictions she has placed.
She should not be making changes to the exam format and syllabus so late in the semester. These unpredictable changes throughout the semester do not allow students to prepare themselves well to do well on any graded material. Do not take any CMN courses with her.
She does not want you to succeed. Do not take her class!!
Changed the exam format to 75 mcqs in 38 minutes!! That's not a teacher that is concerned about educating her students but one who is more concerned about policing the course. She doesn't even know how to communicate and she is a professional communications professor?? Does not answer email or allow you to email her. Do not take her class!!
Not worth it, she makes last minute changes to the syllabus and exam to make things unreasonably difficult for students. It is understandable to make a course challenging, however continually making changes to the syllabus to complicate assessments for students is unreasonable. Make these changes at the beginning of the semester not near the end.
She changed our final exam to 'closed book 75 mcq in 38 minutes' a MONTH before our finals, and after the drop date. Her lectures are open only during mon-fri, which means no work can be done during the weekend, when students actually have time. She will not provide notes either, just a video. If I could give her 0 stars, I would happily do so.
She wrote the mandatory textbook needed for this class.... but doesn't supply the only 20 pages we needed from it, the textbook is 110 dollars from the campus store. Thank you to whoever uploaded the free PDF version online.
Worst professor in all of TMU. she doesnt know how to teach and is finessing the institution into paying her a 100k+ salary for posting terrible prerecorded lectures from COVID lmao. Her videos basically are her going over simple concepts and playing a 10 minute youtube clip. Horrible, absolutely do not reccommend.
Shes the only professor who teaches this course. She writes the expensive textbook that is required reading. The course is asynchronous, which is great.... except she doesn't allow you to view the lectures on the weekend? Why? Nobody knows. She swapped our final exam from being open book to being close book and proctored after the course drop date.
CMN279 with carolyn is an online class with no lectures posted. How does that work out? Its honestly laughable how bad of a teacher she is
Makes the class harder than it needs to be. Requires her overpriced textbook but barely uses it. Constant last-minute changes, unclear videos, and no communication. For an online class, this was a mess. Avoid if you can
She "teaches" CMN279 fully online, but doesn't mark or interact with her students. I wish I was lying because this doesn't sound believable, but I'm convinced she's doing a legal robbery on TMU for salary. All she does is post pre-recorded videos that dont teach anything, and then has her TA's mark and respond to emails for her. LMAO
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!!! This was supposed to be an easy credit but half of the class ended up being accused of plagiarism. I had to do a whole court session and all of the 'evidence' I had was deemed irrelevant (literally my google doc history and the physical notes I took from her prerecorded lecture). She's mean, rude and racist!! STAY AWAY!!!
She doesn't teach, just posts stuff. TAs mark and answer questions. Can't look over the exam before turning it in because answers become locked in the lockdown browser. Taking up space.
