Very nice and funny and the class can be easy if you just stay awake and use the internet readings.
Hard grader. Tests are hand written and if you forget to write in every detail she takes off a bunch of points. She's nice though, good speaker, and she's available to talk to.
Good and bad at the same time. Grades hard as crap, but speaks clear. lecture's are interesting, but you don't need to attend it b/c all the info is on BlackBoard.
She is an extremely good speaker; talks the entire 50 mins from her brain (she doesn't read anything). All major notes are on BlackBoard, so no need for lecture if you can handle it. On the tests you must give every detail about everything. easy though.
I definitely recommend this professor if you want to learn rather than just "get through" a class. I learned a great deal of interesting information in a short amount of time. She is very clear, open-minded, and non-judgmental in discussions.
Dr.Lawes was my absolute favorite professor this semester. She made learning American History very fun. She is an excellent speaker and her lectures are always very interesting. She is also very accessible to reach and always willing to give help if needed. I definitely recommend her lecture course!
Absolutely amazing lecture, grabbed and kept my attention every day. I highly reccomend her if you are prepared to work for it. Very easy to get help from, very clear during lectures.
Hard class. Not alot of work, but very broad and expansive, you'll be studying alot in order to succeed. Nice teacher, though, which makes the environment decent. Good luck if you take it.
If you're willing to put in some work to take detailed notes and study them, you're gonna do great in this class. I didn't open the book once, so this class is good if you don't wanna read a lot of material. She is very clear and speaks totally from memory. TAKE THIS CLASS, SHE'S AWESOME!

Great teacher!!! Doesn't put you to sleep. You have to pay attention and study to get a good grade but she doesn't make it rediculously difficult to suceed. The first paper is kinda hard, but the 2nd is MUCH easier.
Really awesome!!! Lectures are interesting, notes are easy to follow, as long as you study you will do good. She is always willing to help you so go to her office hours.
Awesome lecturer. Actually makes U.S. History interesting. Make sure you go to class and study your notes.
I would suggest to anyone who has to take US History to avoid Dr.Lawes at all cost. Reason being, she has no sympathy for her students. I received a C+ in her class, and that's after putting heart and soul into it. She tries to make her midterm and final difficult by tricking students with weird questions and her term paper makes no sense. Avoid!!!
Dr. Lawes is THE BEST history professor I have ever had. Until her class, I hated history with a PASSION. I had her class at 8 a.m. and attendance was not required. I think I missed ONE class due to unavoidable circumstances. This was because I actually enjoyed her lectures. She is an awesome teacher! Highly recommended!
I have to disagree with most of the other comments. I found the tests very hard and there was alot of information to cover in one test. The lecture was very boring and she did not make me eager to learn about the topic
I do not know why anyone would have anything bad to say about Dr. Lawes. She was beyond nice and taught history like a children's book! This is a general education history class...if you thought this was hard, good luck with the rest of your degree!
Took her online course. Wasn't not very difficult. Tested directly from her powerpoint lectures. Good Teacher.
Her classes are very interesting and clear cut. She uses power point that you can print out online and follow along with. she does assign a couple essays which are not too hard. she adds extra info in the lectures to make it more interesting. you don't need a book if you take good notes.
Dr. Lawes is a great professor. She teaches using a PowerPoint presentation, the book is not mandatory as the tests/essays are derived from the notes and lecture.
She's a good teacher...at the beginning of the year she warns everyone that if you don't go to the lecture, you will fail the class. So go to class. By the way she tests off of the powerpoint so you don't really need the book.
She is a great lecturer, but your grade will only be a midterm, a final, a paper, and a discussion/participation grade. It is now 2 weeks before the end of the semester and the only grade I know of is my midterm grade- which was a 78. You MUST study for the tests and do well on your paper. Overall, She is a good teacher and is willing to help you.
She was absent a lot. I really didn't appreciate that. She gives powerpoint notes and well she talks to us like we are dumb or something. When you ask her a question you don't really get a clear cut answer. When she grades your essay you don't get a clear reason why you got points taken off.
Amazing!
She'll make you work hard, but you'll learn a lot.
She's very clear and describes history very well. Make sure you attend her lectures though.
Not Easy.
I had her class at 8 in the morning and although I didn't attend at times because of how early it was, I was engaged in her lectures. She makes them pretty interesting and I learned a good amount from her. The discussion section that she included was very helpful towards my grade because her tests were pretty hard but overall, not SO bad.
Took her class online. Very nice and helpful professor. Be sure to adhere to due dates because there are absolutely NO exceptions. Tough grader, and there was no rubric to figure out what she was looking for. Ask lots of questions before its due!
Those who complain about her difficulty level have never had a legitimately hard professor. Expectations were clear. Nice to have a no-nonsense professor. Attend lectures and have moderate retention skills and passing the class is easy.
Be prepared to work for nothing. Extremely hard grader, and there is no rubric! She also doesn't really give a real reason as to why she took off so many points. The ONLY nice part is that it was online and it is a work at your own pace- everything is due at a given date, do it now or later your choice. Also slow at getting your grades back.
Worst professor in the world. She is so mean and strict. If you are even a second late, she will shut the door on your face in front of hundreds of kids. Be prepared to fail.
BORING. I have an A in the class. But its not easy. The book is pointless because her tests are straight from her notes. SO SHOW UP. she might say by the book, DONT. WASTE OF MONEY. Her questions on the tests are HARD... and arent very clear. you have to MASTER the material. pick someone else. and the TA's SUCK
BORING. I have an A in the class. But its not easy. The book is pointless because her tests are straight from her notes. SO SHOW UP. she might say by the book, DONT. WASTE OF MONEY. Her questions on the tests are HARD... and arent very clear. you have to MASTER the material. pick someone else.
Tells everybody that attendanceis not manditory but if you dont go you will fail because the tests are based on her notes not the book. extremely hard grader on essay, and test seemed like all the answers given could be right. Show up to class
Midterm & Final are the only tests. They're extremely HARD !!! And one paper that seems hard, but it really isn't that hard. The Discussion portion will boost your grade, along with the paper. If possible, do NOT take this class.
Dr. Lawes is an extremely interesting lecturer. I loved waking up and listening to her lecture and hearing her passion. The only downfall of this class is the midterm and final. Both are difficult and over half of my class failed her midterm. Make sure you go to the lectures, take really good notes, and study and you will pass.
she really likes what she teaches and shes really nice, but her tests were extremely hard and she doesnt give curves because she thinks theyre fair. 120 ppl in the class, 67 failed the midterm and only 1 person got an A and it was a 90. the TA didnt even get an A... if you go to class and study, its not that bad though. i got a B for the semester
I dont know how she is if yout take this class in person but online this class was a nightmare. the work load is not hard at all but assignments are incredibly vague with absolutely no guidlines as to what she expects. got a B in HIST 480W but barely passed an intro history class and not because i didnt do the work. dont take this class
I took an online class. The class was extremely demanding. The expectations were unreasonable. Each exam consisted of an essay of 1500 words with very little completion time allotted. You are expected to post in the discussion board on a daily bases with a large amount of questions per week. She is not very helpful or understanding either.
DO NOT take her online courses. She assigned lengthy essays with little to no guidance on content. Daily postings were required. If you work/have a family and think you want to take an online course because its asynchronous...think again. This woman demands a lot from you. It should be a four credit course!
This teacher knows her stuff but honestly the biggest work load i have ever seen in a college class. The work load is beyond unrealistic for anyone taking more than 2 classes or with a family/job.I am not lazy and no stranger to hard work but I decided to drop this class after midterms because it was taking away from my other 3 classes. DO NOT TAKE
please be aware, this is not your ordinary history class. This professor expects you to be a history buff, or historian. She gives weekly quizzes, discussions, and the clarity on the papers are unbelievable. This is the worst History I have ever taken ever!!!!!!
OMG THEE hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. You hear stories but everything you hear about her courses is true! Extremely too much workload for a class so fast paced. I can understand being a no nonsense professor but my gosh. This course is RIDICULOUS. Don't take it unless you are single, no job, no social life and no children.
The work load for this class was ridiculous. I waited until my Jr/Sr. year to take this class and I had more work and reading in this class than my 300/400 level classes. I don't think this instructor takes into consideration that her students have other classes.6 chapters of reading and about 300+ slides for each module.
Loved the class. Syllabus was clear. Lecture ppts detailed. Didn't really need the textbook. New module every other week. Requires discussion participation. Must read 2 books during class for REQUIRED book club - The Jungle & The Narrative. Make sure you know your material - midterm & final are untimed essays.
I switched majors and had to take an extra history class. I was expecting it to be easy but.... yea. The class required a lot of reading and the midterm and finals were 1300-1800 word papers. They were defiantly a little changeling (mostly compare and contrast). The quizzes though were easy and the teacher seems nice.
Dr. Lawes has constructed a course which builds on each part. If one reads the material, participates in the discussions and refers back to her presentations, success is assured. I love how she really made the material interesting and relevant. Highly recommend this professor. Be prepared to do the work - it's not easy, but it's worthwhile.
She is a good teacher but her requirements are extremely high for a 100 level class. If you prefer to get a B or worse and not going to class , take her .
This professor is brilliant and her course is challenging. Read the stuff, make the posts, write your papers well and ask if you don't understand. She'll help.
She seems like a very nice professor but her expectations are very high! I feel like she gave the class more work to do then someone would need to do for their major courses which should be more work then a general ed course. A LOT of reading and writing to keep up with, I always take history online and this is the first time I felt overloaded.
Yikes. I thought 100 level courses were meant to be challenging, but still entry-level courses. If you're only taking history to fulfill your gen Ed, then pick a different professor. It doesn't help that Ms. Lawes gives you almost no assistance.
Professor Lawes has to have a second job as a comedian! And she's so dedicated to History. The modules are a little long. She's a tough grader on the couple papers that are required, but I think she's very fair and very helpful. If you follow the directions, you'll pass with flying colors. There's a lot of reading involved but it's easy. Loved it!!
Dr. Lawes is very knowledgeable on history. Pretty tough grader. Has high expectations but if you participate and thoroughly read the syllabus you should pass.
I took this class in the summer so I knew the course material would be accelerated. This class would not be considered "easy" and I credit my success to reading the book. You will be graded heavily on the midterm, final, and history paper. You will also need to create and post on multiple forum threads for participation points. Best of luck!
Get ready to read, read, and read some more. If you don't read ALL the assigned material, you won't do well. Each week is mult. ch. in text, articles, excerpts, videos, etc. Focuses more on word length, peer responses, and amt. of days worked on assignments. Don't recommend taking in summer with other class bc of workload and shorter semester.
Her class was my first one that I took online, and she made the experience really easy. If you do the work that she asks you to do, you shouldn't have any problem passing the class. She is very quick with responding to emails, and lectures are easy to understand
I took the online class and was failing the first month. Definitely a lot of reading and writing, but once you get used to her learning style it is easier. Midterm and Final are 5 page papers.
Very unfair and strict, little to no budging on late assignments or extra credit. very strick.
Awesome prof. & sets you up for success! Lectures can be long, sometimes 150+ slides. Weekly quizzes, DB posts & classmate responses 3x per week. Drops lowest quiz grade. Midterm & final are essays and a paper in between, but are easy and fun to write. Put in a little effort and you'll be fine. Definitely recommend if you love history!
Keep up with the work on time to survive. No late work accepted AT ALL. Discussion Forum consist of responses to 6 questions 100words each before you can respond to others. Must have 5 comments (initial post counts as 1) and they MUST stretch over a 3day period, No last min all turn in all work in one day. Quiz every week, 3 major assignments.
There is a lot of work, but it is an easy A if you put the work in.
This class was so difficult for no reason.. The way she makes you write 5 comments over a 3 day period is so inconvenient and you can't comment until you have submitted your own DB post first.. meaning you have to do the assignment at least 3 days before due date to receive full credit. Ridiculous.
I took this class online as my first online class ever and it was a very good choice to have her as a professor. The grading is very clear and assignments are self explanatory you don't really need the book because the powerpoints on BB are enough.
Be prepared to read & write, discussion boards are basically small essays, 700-800 words after your post & responses to classmates which have to be done over the course of 5 days to get full points. Midterm & final are essays, plus a 1200-1800 word writing assignment & 2 book clubs that she treats like DB as well. Hard grader, no book.
Her method of teaching is not productive in my opinion. I wasted an entire semester in this course to satisfy my general education requirement just to have my 3.7 GPA tank because NONE of my writings were up to par and I did not often have time to dedicate to the 5 posts across 3 days discussion structure.
This professor is very rude when it comes to emails. I had one issue and it was something that I did not quite understand and she talked to me like I was an absolute idiot through email, all over something that was vaguely explained on the syllabus. Make sure you ask many questions from the get go. I do love the material that is covered in class.
Dr. Lawes is a great teacher! She's detailed and she has excellent lectures! I greatly enjoy her! Get ready to work though, she requires a good amount of your time because her classes are online. She needs to see that you read her lectures and articles. Make sure you answer the questions in their entirety and PARTICIPATE!
Dr. Lawes lays out everything you need to know for the whole course in her syllabus. The workload was heavy, but not necessarily difficult. She tells you exactly what she wants out of each assignment, and as long as you follow it you'll be fine. Very entertaining power points! Would definitely recommend!
Great class, not so great teacher. Very rude when she responds via email. I requested clarification on a subject and it seemed as though she was talking down to me. This class is NOT a good selection for those who work full time while also being a full time student. Unreasonable grading and attitude.
The work load is heavy but not necessarily difficult. Her power points are entertaining and very informational (and all the quiz answers are in them). You have to write 3 papers and she is a TOUGH grader. Her feedback can be a bit condescending so if you are a weaker writer - have your papers checked by a writing center etc.
Very tough grader. I took this class online and it's an easy subject, but like I said very tough grader. You have three essay's and no multiple choice tests/short answers. The lectures are interesting and the quizzes are easy. You will have discussion boards and those are easy too. Make sure you know what you're writing about.
History is not my major, but she helped me understand this topic and was very thorough in explaining what was expected of us for every assignment. Each assignment helps for the quizzes, the paper, and the essay styled midterm and final. Take her!
I tried to give her a 0 but it wouldn't let me. Do NOT take this professor. Her grading criteria for all assignments are beyond harsh, they're ridiculous. There are 3 papers and she grades them strictly but hardly gives any explanation for why she took so many points off. On top of that, she is straight up rude when she responds to emails.
Love this professor!! She is a tough graders, but she clearly tells you what she expects from you with every assignment, so as long as you follow her guidelines you'll be fine. Her midterm and final are papers. All the quiz answers are in the power points.
This course should be designated as a Writing Intensive Course. Midterm and Final are essays, there is a paper, and each week she expects a 500 word initial discussion question response along with 4 other "substantive" responses. I wrote more for this course than I did for my capstone. If you total up the minimum all the writing it comes to 9Kwds
Honestly I was skeptical about taking this class because of previous peoples ratings. But I can say that this class was the most interesting online class I've had. You do have to read her lectures to understand what she wants from you. Three essays throughout the semester. I was upset the class was over because I learned a lot!
I took this class to save myself time with my extremely busy work and school schedule but its only made my semester worse. The grading is so strict its ridiculous. Unless you can basically read her mind its difficult to know exactly what she wants on the the essays she assigns.
DO NOT take this class. I'm straight A student and I dropped the class because I would rather have a W on my transcripts than a C. I took this class hoping for an easy A in online history but I was wrong. She's the hardest grader I have ever had and honestly really rude with her feedback. Just save yourself the trouble and take a different prof
This was supposed to be a way to save myself time but its only made everything harder. Grading is ridiculous, she grades her papers harder than my English teacher. Shes extremely rude in emails and not flexible at all. Save yourself the trouble and find a different prof to teach you this course.
There are three papers to write throughout the semester that take a little time to do. I was a little uncertain of the grading criteria and didn't necessarily receive meaningful feedback on the papers. I found her PowerPoint lectures to be entertaining and informative. This class was a little more difficult than I had expected, but manageable.
Dr. Lawes is very knowledgeable & her personal lectures were great! Plan on spending a ton of time reading & watching videos. I took 2 other courses & did more homework for this course than the other 2 combined. She doesn't open the material until last minute so you can't work ahead or at your own pace. I did learn a lot though& enjoyed this course
After reading reviews about professor Lawes I was a bit unsure and intimidated to take her class. Her lectures were very informative and interesting about the American History. I am not at best at history or at writing, and in this class you will write a lot. . However, she states all her directions very clearly. If you follow them you will pass!
I really enjoyed the class. The quizzes come straight from the power points. The discussion questions are lengthy but not difficult to answer. Her power points are thorough and entertaining, and I like that you don't need to buy a textbook to pass the class. She's a tough grader, but all of her instructions are clear. Just follow her directions.
Prof Lawes is very genuine! She literally just wants you to pass. Her dbs, quizzes, and papers has a clear grading rubric. She replies back to emails very fast and is very understanding. I recommend 10/10! I HATE history, but I can say that I genuinely enjoyed this class and learned a lot from an online class. The films are also very interesting!
Let me put a warning out on this lady. If you have accomodations through the accessibility office, don't take her. She must've been hurt in the past because everything I do is treated with mistrust and distain. If your insecure or sensitive, go elsewhere. Don't ruin your semester looking over your back. You worked too hard to get to this level.
DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU LOVE UNGODLY AMOUNTS OF WORK. I attempted to take over summer and withdrew because there is simply too much reading and the discussion requirements are excessive and honestly annoying. She attempts to warn you in the syllabus but it does not even begin to describe how writing and reading intensive this class is.
Professor Lawes clearly states what her expectations are and has a well organized approach. She also has a good sense of humor! The weekly/bi-weekly discussion posts require you to read responses from 5 of your peers and comment. Your own post is also about 500 words but the questions are easy to answer if you've read the lecture and extra material
I actually enjoyed women's history because of Professor Lawes. She's organized and states her expectations clearly. No exams but research papers instead. Discussion boards are heavy participation and quizzes are 10 questions in 10 minutes. I never used the textbook but she provides lots of reading to do for DBs. One extra credit assignment.
I took this course over the summer and it was great. 5 quizzes, 5 discussions, and 2 tests (for 6 week course). Lowest quiz and discussion dropped. Discussions were lengthy, but easy to get a 10/10 if you followed the guidelines. I didn't even read the textbook and got an A. Class seems tough at first but if you follow the syllabus you're golden.
On the quizzes and midterm she only give you one minute per question to answer. She assign a lot of reading and but only 10 questions per quiz. The discussion boards aren't that hard but you have to read.
The discussions were the easiest thing in the class. She only assigns one minute per question on test and quizzes. Be prepared to read
The class was straightforward and there were no video lectures, only Powerpoints to click through. I did not study and still got an A- because most of the information is stuff we learned in high school. Professor was easy to contact and gave feedback on all discussion boards and papers. Overall, I would recommend taking Professor Lawes.
Let me make one thing clear, if you have test anxiety, do not take her class. Her emails are passive aggressive and she only allowed 1 minute per question on tests and exams. By the time you read the question you only have 45ish seconds remaining. Doesn’t really care to accommodate to anyone.
When I say DO NOT take this professor. I truly mean it. Professor has unreasonably high and unfair expectations. This professor does not allow the use of GroupMe in the class and she will send it to conduct for thinking someone has cheated. For accommodations she will not meet them unless she truly has and which means having them involved.
I was so disappointed in how I felt when I told this teacher that I was having serious medical problems and asked her to work with me, her response was, "I don't know what you want me to do for you." If you can take a different class to meet your requirements, DO IT! THIS IS A FRIENDLY WARNING.
Dr. Lawes is great! 1 research project, 7 discussions, 5 quizzes and 2 exams that are all multiple choice. You only get 10 minutes on the 10-question quizzes, but this is plenty of time if you've studied. As long as you follow all the directions and don't wait until last minute to do assignments, you will be set.
Do NOT take this class. She seems very uncaring about your grade. The workload was ridiculous and too much. I put a lot of effort into this class and could never get above a C. She won't let you work ahead, and she doesn't abide by accommodations set by OEA. I regret taking her. She's quick to report students for plagiarism.
Over 500 pages to read in the first week, with a quiz and assignment already due the second week, I was behind already and I read daily.
If you can handle asynchronous classes, you'll love Dr. Lawes. The structure & expectations of the class are very clear. The lectures are VERY heavy, over 100 slides at times, but interesting. She's very specific about what she wants in your writing. Participate, read the prompts carefully and fully, and submit everything on time; you'll get an A.
I just took Professor Lawes for a Maymester class and she was good! Granted you were not able to work ahead and did spend a bit of time working on assignments, but the class was not bad. If you follow her directions on what she wants, how she wants it and put in some effort, you will be good. She is not as bad as the other reviews states.
Take her if you don't have any other class at all.
i HATED this online course. Give mandatory discussion boards where you only have 2 days to participate, and so fun so fun, its fridays and saturdays. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS IT IS THE ONLY OPTION.
As long as you are ready to do the homework, its not too bad. The only downside is her quizzes dont make too much sense and it is a heavy heavy workload so only take her classes if you dont have any other option. She will also not work with you if you are sick etc.
Professor Lawes' class is a mixed bag. It can be challenging due to tight deadlines and quick quizzes, but engaging with the material and using study tools like unstuckstudy can help you succeed. The discussions are manageable if you stay on top of the work.
She has close to no communication skills, and will not work with students for any issues they are experiencing (technological, personal, etc.). All of the coursework includes reading 4-5 30+ paged historical journals every week. Her rules are very meticulous, a slight misunderstanding, and you WILL receive a 0 for the assignment.
Avoid this professor at all cost. I spent about 8-10 hours each week completing this professor's assignments each week... for a 100 level class. The exams are insanely difficult unless you have a masters in US History. Her teaching style is lazy and not even relevant to the exam material in some cases. ODU should find a new History professor.
this course is ok. It starts off graded harshly but eases up later. There aren't many assignments, which can be good or bad. Discussion posts are due every other week and require two days of participation—if you wait until the last minute, expect to work on Saturday and Sunday. the assignments had a lot of requirments to obtain an A.
She is very strict and meticulous in her rules and guidelines for every assignment big and small. She gave my roommate a 0 for a small mistake on citations when he was only taking the class to boost his gpa before graduating.
This class was definitely a lot of reading but all worth it. Most work is through lengthy discussion boards but they are very thought provoking. Dr. Lawes gives good feedback and makes sure you understand the time period you are studying. If you put in the work you will learn a lot in her class.
Only 24hrs for the final essay, released the prompt at the same time the exam opened. Work wasn't necessarily difficult; it was the workload that was hard to keep up with. Every module had at least 3 lectures, with over 100 slides each. The DBs had to be done over the course of 2 days, and required you to look at all slides and documentaries.
